FOREWORD Science as a school subject has come a long way from the dull repetition of physical experiments or the production of noxious gases. A glance through any of the exhibition brochures of past years will reveal that today's students have not been slow to grasp the new opportunities opened to them by the broadening of the scientific curriculum. The range and nature of the projects undertaken reflect a growing awareness of the increasingly important part that science is playing in Irish life. A good deal of the credit for this encouraging situation must go to our educational authorities, and to many distinguished and gifted teachers. In a field where re-evaluation is a continuous process, the young scientist needs informed and sympathetic guidance. The number, quality and range of entries for the Young Scientists' Exhibition over the years afford evidence of the high degree of cooperation and sympathy that exists between student and teacher. Prize money amounting to ÂŁ1,730 will be available to forty-five competitors in this year's exhibition. It is a pity that in an exhibition such as this, not everyone can win prizes. The line that separates the prizewinner from the runner-up is often very fine, and while it is only human to feel disappointment, participation alone can be its own reward-in terms of ideas exchanged with visitors and fellow exhibitors, and new projects suggested which may prove the prize-winner of future exhibitions. Participation in the Young Scientists' Exhibition is education in its fullest sense-allied to the knowledge that each and every competitor, winner or not, is contributing to the success of an exciting and very important event in the calendar of Irish students. In conclusion, I wish again to thank the judges, without whose difficult and painstaking work the exhibition could not have achieved its acknowledged success and value. We all continue in their debt.

FEATURE DISPLAY Computing in Schools This is an exhibition of some of the ways in which various computers are used for training at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, and at other schools in Ireland. The exhibition will include demonstrations of Portora's teletype terminal and a terminal borrowed from University College Dublin, on line to the UCD computer at Belfield, as well as demonstrations of other computing equipment. During the exhibition the pupils from Portora Royal School and the Vocational School, Wicklow, will demonstrate interactive working of computers in Ireland and Britain. They will analyse various aspects of the entries and the results of previous Young Scientists Exhibitions and they will undertake to solve a range of other problems as may be suggested by the visiting public.
