FOREWORD-YSE PROGRAMME The eighth time round-and Aer Lingus is proud once again to have the opportunity to demonstrate its interest in Irish education and in youth. The size, the scope and the interest of the public in this annual exhibition bear testimony to the fact that the communityowned national airline has a social conscience to which it gives expression largely in the interests of youth. We have this year more competitors than ever before. Regarding this success, we appreciate that the airline can only provide the platform, as it were; it is Irish youth, their teachers, and the judges who make this great annual event possible. This year marks the extension of the Young Scientists Exhibition to embrace students from Northern Ireland. We extend a warm and sincere welcome to them and we wish them success on their merits. We can only hope that the heavy problems relating to the North of Ireland will speedily be resolved, and that future years will see the Young Scientists Exhibition with a greater number of Northern entrants. To our panel of judges, all eminent scientists -and by now almost old friends-we again extend warmestthanks, on our own behalf and on behalf of all the competitiors. Without their great talents and their continuing interest, nothing on the scale of the Young Scientists Exhibition of 1972 would be possible. Our prize list is extensive, but of course many competitors will not feature in it. Perhaps they-and their dedicated teachers-will be disappointed, even discouraged. Regrettably, this is unavoidable, for the Young Scientists Exhibition continues to be a genuine competition; and from competition, irrespective of the result, there is always reward. There are really no losers. To all our competitiors we wish to record our thanks for their part in making the Young Scientists Exhibition what it is-a happy augury for Ireland's continuing steady advance in science and technology.
