In the four Young Scientists' Exhibitions that have been held annually since 1965, more than 1,100 projects were entered by pupils of our post-primary schools, If this figure is impressive in itself, the nature and variety of those projects were hardly less so: not only were the principal branches of the natural sciences fully represented, but it was twice necessary to refine categories by introducing new classifications. Including the "Young Scientist of the Year" awards, which were made on each of four previous occasions, upwards of 150 prizes were won by other competitors. Mere relative merit, however, was not enough to win them: the fact that projects were adjudged to be first in their own categories did not necessarily mean that they deserved prizes. From the outset, our distinguished panel of judges rightly insisted that a minimum standard must beset and reached. This standard has been maintained ever since and awards have been withheld in not a few instances where the best projects in particular classifications failed to attain the required level of excellence. Thus, the prizes won by our young competitors have had the double distinction of competitive superiority and inherent merit; and those that have been awarded at the present Exhibition are likewise distinguished. Countries that were outside the main stream of the Industrial Revolution were ill-equipped to contribute to, or even keep abreast of, the advancements in science that characterised the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. This is understandable: rapid industrialisation is a well-known forcing-bed for human skills and knowledge. Ireland has been no exception: the course of history was not conducive to our development in this regard. Given the opportunity, however, Irish men and women have shown that they are capable of meeting the demands of this increasingly technological age. The formation and growth of Aer Lingus is one example of this capacity. The achievements of our young scientists provide many more and encouraging examples.
