At an early stage in the planning of this Exhibition, a question arose as to the desirability of making it a public one. The arguments in favour were many and cogent: parents, it was felt, should have the opportunity of seeing the results of their children's work; other students would surely benefit from viewing their schoolmates' achievements and might be inspired to follow their example, while even those members of the general public who possessed little or no knowledge of Science would at least be interested in the novelty of a display of this kind.

There was, however, one consideration that made us hesitate: what if the response were poor and the total number of entries too small to be worth the presentation? This enterprise was the first of its kind in Ireland and there was no certainty that, even if students were sufficiently interested in submitting entries, the pursuit of other studies might leave them sufficient time for extra-curricular activity.

I am very glad to admit that we underestimated the enthusiasm and the industry of our young people. Indeed, of late, our problem has been to devise a means of accommodating entries more numerous than we anticipated even in our most optimistic moments. Need I say that this problem was one that we were only too pleased to encounter.

When announcing the Young Scientists' Exhibition last April, we published simultaneously a booklet which, besides giving general information about the scope of the Exhibition, also set out our reasons for sponsoring it. I feel that it is appropriate to quote the following extract from this publication: The changes that have taken place in our own time are too obvious and too numerous to mention. The effects of these changes are obvious also: Irish people now enjoy a standard of living that would have been unthinkable half a century ago. This truly remarkable improvement has been due to the great and rapid advance made in all fields of science and to man's genius for adapting them to his own use.

If we in Ireland want to share the advantages that further scientific advances can bestow, we must first come to understand the nature of the times in which we live. This is the Age of Science and, despite the radical changes that have already taken place, we are standing merely on the threshold of new wonders. If we ignore this fact, we will inevitably fall behind those other countries which seize eagerly on each technological advance and exploit it to the best social and industrial advantage.

In another and very urgent sense , Ireland's

future lies with its young people. How they will shape that future depends largely on the equipment that we of this generation place in their hands. Undoubtedly, the most valuable, single tool we can bequeath to them is the type of education that will enable them not only to meet the exacting demands of modern life, but that will also imbue them with a lively desire to experiment, invent and innovate.

We believe that this desire can best be created by encouraging students, girls as well as boys, to take a keener interest in science-in the broadest sense of that word.

For, it is only by commencing the study, both physical and mental, of their environment that young people can assess and ultimately harness its potentialities in the service of their country.

The future growth of Aer Lingus will depend In great measure on its technical staff. This Is equally true of other native undertakings as of the national airline. The Company accepts, therefore, that It has a general as well as a particular responsibility to co-operate with those who are concerned with raising the level of scientific knowledge In this country."

The variety, Ingenuity and patient attention to detail so apparent In the projects on view In this, our first Young Scientists' Exhibition, leave little doubt In my mind that , If Ireland's future lies with the younger generation, It rests In safe and capable hands.

I am glad to acknowledge our Indobtodness for the valuable advice and co-operation that was given in the planning of this Exhibition, by officials of the Secondary and Technical Instruction Branches of the Department of Education, Vocational Teachers' Association, Association of Secondary Teachers (Ireland), Irish Science Teachers' Association, Macra na Feirme and by individual educationalists . Last, and by no means least, must thank our panel of judges who have given their time so generously and discharged a difficult task so excellently.
