1.1 How the education system works?

There are four countries in the United Kingdom: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The school system works in a fundamentally similar way across all regions, though there are some differences.

Here, we describe the main features of the English school system.

5 stages of the UK education system Early Years Primary Secondary Further Education (FE) Higher Education (HE)

Early Years, Primary & Secondary The first 3 of these stages are compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) and 16 (School leaving age).

The Early Years stage (also known as the Foundation Stage) of education is for children aged 3-5 years.

After this, children progress into the Primary and Secondary stages. During these stages, local-authoritymaintained schools teach a set of subjects known as the National Curriculum. Other types of schools do not have to follow the national curriculum.

The National Curriculum is organised into blocks of years called 'Key Stages' (KS). At the end of each Key Stage, the teacher will formally assess the pupil’s performance using Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) for KS1 & KS2. GCSE for KS4.

Further Education (FE) The education level of FE is between Secondary and HE. This is a path for students to continue on higher academic study or to get employment in some specific technical sector. Courses range varies normally from RQF Level 2 to Level 3. Some courses are designed for students aged between 16 and 19.

Higher education (HE) This is the highest stage of the system. Courses at this level and above are usually provided by the university and some colleges. Qualifications such as undergraduate degree, master’s degree and a doctorate from RQF level 6 to level 8(highest level).

1.3 What is Ofsted?

Ofsted, is a non-ministerial department of the UK government, is responsible for monitoring and evaluating educational and skills learning providers in England. In contrast, inspection bodies are appointed by Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

For individuals seeking to make informed decisions regarding school selection in England, Ofsted ratings can serve as a significant factor. These ratings serve as indicators of a school's adherence to quality standards, making an understanding of Ofsted inspection, reporting, and rating processes essential for making informed decisions regarding school applications.

The following will provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of Ofsted inspection, reporting, and rating.

WHAT DOES OFSTED STAND FOR? The term Ofsted derives from Office for Standards In Education, Children Services Skills, and was introduced back in 1992 and it is part of the Department for Education (DfE). Ever since its introduction, Ofsted has been concerned with the inspection and regulation of services for children and young adults, known as Ofsted inspection.

WHAT ARE OFSTED’S CORE RESPONSIBILITIES? In a few words, Ofsted’s role is to ensure that all the organisations across England that provide education, care services maintain a high standard for children and students. This is achieved by carrying out inspections and regulatory visits every week. Ofsted inspections are usually published online and can be accessed by everybody.

As reported on the government page, Ofsted’s main responsibilities follow in the below core areas: Ofsted Inspections: • Maintained schools and academies, some independent schools, and many other educational institutions and programmes outside of higher education.

• Childcare, adoption and fostering agencies and initial teacher training.

Ofsted Regulations: • A range of early years and children’s social care services, making sure they’re suitable for children and potentially vulnerable young people.

Ofsted reports: • Publishing reports of the findings so they can be used to improve the overall quality of education and training.

• Informing policymakers about the effectiveness of these services.

1.4 Regulated Qualifications Framework In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there are 9 qualification levels indicating the difficulty of the qualifications. Starting from “Entry Level” to the most difficult “Level 8”. Below are some ideas of the most common exams and their level.

1.6 General qualification GCSEs - General Certificate of Secondary Education (RQF - Level 1 or Level 2) Usually taken by pupils aged 14-16 in secondary education, GCSEs take 2 years to complete. They are available in a wide range of subjects, some of which are academic, while others are more practical and hands-on. As well as providing valuable knowledge and skills to students themselves, GCSEs are an important step towards employment, as many employers and colleges ask for candidates to have at least five GCSEs.

English Baccalaureate (EBacc) Introduced in 2010, the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is not a qualification in itself. Instead, it is a measure of a student’s success in 6 core academic subjects (English, mathematics, history or geography, the sciences and a language). Although universities do not base their decisions on students’ EBacc performance, when offering places, they do see a value in the EBacc, as it demonstrates that the student has studied a broad range of core subjects.

A-Level (Advanced Level qualification) (RQF level 3) Pupils who are thinking to go to university usually taken A-Level after they completed GCSE. Schools normally require at least 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for any pupils to take A-Level. Pupils have to have at least grade B in GCSE for some specific subject(s).

Diplomas Designed as a qualification for 14 to 19 yearolds, diplomas offer students a more practical (less academic) way of gaining the essential skills required by employers and universities. Involving exposure to hands-on experience as well as classroom learning, they are a way of encouraging students to relevant work-related skills, as well as their abilities in English, maths and ICT. Diplomas usually take 2 years to complete.

International Baccalaureate (RQF Level 3) The IB is an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, recognised by universities across the world. They are generally studies by 16-to-19-year-olds and take 2 years to complete.

1.6 General qualification Work-related courses These are aimed at students who want to learn more about a particular area of work and can be taken in conjunction with GCSEs and A-levels. Two common forms of work-related courses are:

BTEC This is a course developed and examined by the Business and Technology Education Council. These vocational qualifications that are based on practical rather than academic study. BTEC students want to gain skills and knowledge in their subject area, then use those skills in real-life scenarios.

OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations) OCR provide GCSEs and A-Levels in over 40 subjects and over 450 vocational qualifications, designed to teach practical workplace skills to students aged up to 19.

Dipecialist industry-led qualifications A wide range of full-time, technically-oriented courses is provided by University Technical Colleges (government-funded schools with a focus on science and technology). These courses are designed for students aged 14 to 19 and deliver industry-led accreditation (qualifications based on content that has been approved by a professional body).

Courses usually include a strong practical element, often in the workplace.

IHNC (Higher National Certificate) (RQF Level 4) The HNC is a practical-based qualification, designed to help people specialise in a certain career or gain entry to a university at a second- or third-year level. It typically takes a year to complete an HNC course but can be studied parttime.

HND (Higher National Diploma) (RQF Level 5) The HND is a step up from a Higher National Certificate, as they require study to a deeper level, and generally takes two years to complete (unless studied part-time).

Foundation Degrees (RQF Level 5) A foundation degree typically takes 2 years to complete. Courses focus on providing knowledge and skills for market needs, and at the same time allowing the student a chance to be able to move on to complete a full honours degree after completing a foundation degree.

1.7 National curriculum The National Curriculum is defined by the British Government Department for Education (DfE). It aims to ensure a shared approach to education by local-authority-maintained schools in England and Wales so that all pupils have the same opportunities. Although academies and private schools are not required to follow the National Curriculum precisely, they must teach to a broad and balanced curriculum that includes the core subjects of English, maths and science. In addition, all maintained (government-funded) schools are also required to teach religious education, while secondary schools must also provide sex and relationship education.

1.7 National curriculum Primary Level (KS 1 & KS 2) Subjects The subjects which must be taught in KS1 and KS2 are as shown in the table. Religious Education is also required in all maintained (government-funded) schools, but parents can withdraw their children from all or part of the Religious Education lessons if they require it. Although it is non-statutory (not legally required), schools are also expected to teach “Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)”.

Assessments At the end of KS1 (Year 2), and again at the end of KS2 (Year 6), each pupil is assessed in all subjects.

Although these will be teacher assessments in most subjects, all children sit tests in English and mathematics. These tests, commonly called Standard Assessment Tests (SATs), cannot be failed, and are designed to help identify the progress of individual children, and their needs as they move into key stage 2. The tests can be taken at any time during May.

Secondary Level (KS 3, KS 4 & KS 5) KS 3 The subjects are the same as KS2 with 2 additional subjects, “Citizenship” and “Sex and relationship education”.

KS 4 During KS 4 (Years 10 and 11) most pupils study for national qualifications - usually General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). While there are many options for GCSE subjects, core subjects (Maths, English, Science) are considered so important that they are mandatory. Some ‘Foundation’ subjects are also required, though these are not studied in the same depth as core subjects.

Students typically take around 9 GCSEs and are encouraged to make a balanced choice, to keep their options open for KS5.

KS 5 At the end of Year 11 (age 16), students can choose to leave school, if they prefer (though they must remain in education or another form of learning environment until they are 18 in England – see "How the School System Works"). However, many students choose to remain at school to prepare for university. This requires them to choose (usually 3 or 4) A (Advanced) level subjects which are studied in greater depth than GCSE. A-level exams are taken at the end of Year 13, though they may also take AS (Advanced Subsidiary) exams at the end of Year 12.

2.1 School’s name and curriculum covered

2.2 Common Types of school The more common types of school are:

Local authority maintained schools The majority of schools in England and wales are maintained schools. These are funded and controlled by the LA (Local Authority) and follow the national curriculum.

Grammar schools These schools can be run by the local authority, a foundation body or academy trust. These schools have a strong focus on academic achievement and select pupils on the basis of ability. To obtain a place, pupils must usually sit an examination at age 11 ( known as the 11-plus). To filter out this type of school on our platform, it could be found inside the “Admissions Policy” filer and choose “Selective”.

Academies Schools This type of schools operated by academy trust and they receive funding directly from government rather than through their Local Authority. Academies schools have more freedom on the daily operation, for example, they do not have to follow the national curriculum on teaching.

Independent schools (or called Private School) These schools charge fees for attendance and are not required to follow the national curriculum.

They have their own admission policy. All independent schools must be registered with the UK government and are inspected regularly by Ofsted, ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate), or School Inspection Service.

Faith Schools Although Faith Schools are required to follow the national curriculum, they can choose what they teach in religious studies. They also have their own admissions criteria but is open for all pupil to apply.

2.3 What is a Grammar School In the past, pupils attending grammar schools were allowed to learn classical languages such as ancient Greek and Latin.

Nowadays, grammar schools have become secondary schools, which are rather selective state schools with a strong focus on academic achievement and offer admission to pupils based on their 11 plus exam. There are plenty of 11-plus free resources that allow pupils to prepare for this exam such as 11-plus mock exams and past papers but more on this later!

In a nutshell, grammar schools are driven by a mixture of academic excellence, traditional teaching methods and the adoption of strict disciplines. Although the rigid selection process, grammar schools are funded by the government. The difference between a grammar school and a state school lies within the weight given to certain subjects. Whilst state schools focus more on vocational subjects, grammar schools focus more on academic subjects with the assumption that most of the pupils will pursue higher education.

Additionally, a relatively large number of grammar schools boast an academy status, which means an enriched and more flexible curriculum allowing pupils to undertake some GCSEs in Year 9 and 10, instead of taking them all on Year 11.

Currently, there are 163 grammar schools in England and 69 in Northern Ireland. Although some schools in Scotland and Wales have retained the name of “grammar school”, they are not the same school type.

2.4 Pros and cons of the Grammar School When considering whether your child could be a great fit for grammar schools, you should also evaluate the pros and cons.

That being said, the major benefits of attending schools are as follows: High Achievers: pupils attending grammar schools are surrounded by other like-minded students, who strive for academic excellence. This usually implies great GCSE results and equally impressive results during their A-levels. Also, children will be less likely to be bullied for working harder and excelling at school.

Quality of teaching: generally, grammar schools offer a high level of quality when it comes to teaching as they tend to encapsulate all the subjects, whereas comprehensive schools will focus more on providing good English, maths and sciences grades.

Facilities and academic environment: excellent facilities could be a key decision for parents to enrol their child at a grammar school. They usually offer more opportunities to children with a gift for subjects such as music and sport. They also have a stronger connection with top universities in the UK, therefore, more support will be provided when it comes to applying to these universities.

As with everything else, below are some of the cons when it comes to grammar school.

Higher costs: tutoring children can be quite expensive, so children from wealthier families MAY stand a better chance to get being admitted into grammar schools as parents can afford to tutor.

The difficulty level of the 11-Plus exam: by the end of primary school, many children have not yet developed the necessary cognitive skills to take the exam. Therefore, failed attempts may resort to phycological issues in children, who may see themselves as “failures”.

REMEMBER, It is also important to remember that the academic nature of grammar schools rather than vocational. So, if your child is not showing academic signs by the end of their primary education, you may want to consider other options, perhaps secondary schools that offer more vocational courses.

2.5 How do Grammar schools select their pupils?

As previously mentioned, the selection process is based upon pupils’ 11-Plus Exam. This exam is usually taken in the last year of primary school. Pupils are usually tested based on the following:

• Numerical reasoning; • Verbal reasoning; • English comprehensive, grammar and punctuation; • Non-verbal reasoning; • Creative writing.

Despite these are the core criteria upon which pupils are selected, grammar schools selection process can vary. some schools admit successful students solely based on the ranking order results, skimming out the best pupils off the top of the list. Though, some other schools will consider other criteria such as living distance from the school or whether they have siblings there along with the ranking order.

2.6 Preparing for the 11 Plus Exam As previously mentioned, grammar schools are selective institutions that require pupils to demonstrate a variety of skills during the 11-plus exam. Preparing for this examination can be an intimidating task. However, there are numerous free resources available to aid in the process. In order to maximize preparedness, it is recommended that students engage with past 11-plus papers and mock exams.

The exam consists of four papers that cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematics, and English. While seeking the assistance of a tutor may prove beneficial, it is not always necessary.

2.7 Where in the UK has Grammar School ?

South East has 58 Grammar Schools which is the most. Follow by South West with 20 Grammar Schools.

North West and London both have 19 Grammar Schools. North East has no Grammar School.

If to look deeper at the number of Grammar School by the local authority, Kent has the most with 32 Grammar Schools.

Follow by Lincolnshire with 15 Grammar Schools and Buckinghamshire with 13 Grammar Schools.

2.9 Special education needs support (SEN) in the UK Special Educational Needs (SEN) affect a child’s behaviour, understanding, physical abilities and reading and writing skills. It is essential children with SEN needs to get the support to grow and develop just like any other child, so they can enjoy their education just as much as anyone else. If your child does have special educational needs, you will be entitled to get support whether it would be from a teacher, an assistant or a professional doctor.

Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan The Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan are for pupils aged up to 25 who require extra support than normal SEN support.

An EHC assessment is required to conduct by your LOCAL COUNCIL, which requirement can be made by people who think is necessary, for example, a doctor, school teacher, health visitors, parents and a family member. A young person themselves can request this assessment if their age is between 16 and 25.

4. A report about you and your family will be sent to the child’s family who is looking for this service, asking if they are happy to choose you as their home to stay in the UK. 5. If you and the child’s parents are happy to proceed, the guardianship company will arrange for the child to come and may have a trial stay with you. 5.3 Free school meal FREE SCHOOL MEAL: IS YOUR CHILD ELIGIBLE? Were you aware that certain families are eligible to receive supplementary assistance in the form of complimentary meals and uniforms for their children at school? WHAT’S THE FREE SCHOOL MEAL VOUCHER? The free school meal voucher scheme is a nationwide program administered by Edenred. Between March and August of last year, voucher codes worth £380 were redeemed as supermarket gift cards.

Each voucher is valued at £15 per child per week and may be obtained by families via email or provided as a gift card through post, collection, or delivery for those without internet access.

Many schools, particularly primary schools, are located on narrow roads within densely populated residential areas where even homeowners struggle to find sufficient space to park their cars.

If you are a newcomer to the UK, and you are a parent sending your child to school, you may be unfamiliar with the intricacies of school parking and the associated challenges. This blog aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the requirements, enforcements and regulations surrounding school parking. Parking restrictions and rules near schools Illegally parked vehicles around schools have become a growing concern as they pose a threat to the safety of children and other pedestrians. Parking on zig-zag lines or pedestrian crossings can hinder the visibility of drivers and pedestrians alike, while obstructing access to emergency services, bus stops, or private properties. HOW THE SCHOOL STREET SCHEME IS ENFORCED: All of the schemes are enforced using CCTV cameras positioned at the entry and exit points of the zone. Entering a school street zone during the times of prohibition is an offence under the Traffic Management Act 2004 and may incur a Penalty Charge Notice.

A penalty charge will of is £130 discounted to £65 if paid within 14 days.

Residents living within the zones are exempt from the prohibition and can apply for a virtual permit denoted by ‘S’ permit holders on the entry signs.

Parking tickets: Parking tickets, or commonly known as Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) is a fine penalty, which is issued based on disobeying parking or traffic rules.

For instance, you are likely to get Penalty Charge Notices for parking where you don’t have a licence or over double yellow lines or occupying space over a yellow box, which is usually for bus stops. Refer to the parking rules indicated above to avoid Penalty Charge Notice.

REMEMBER IfAs the registered owner of a vehicle, you remain accountable for any Penalty Charge Notice, regardless of whether another driver was responsible for the infraction. It is possible to remit the full amount of the fine online using a valid payment card and a ten-digit reference number beginning with the letters HG. Those who have been made redundant or are receiving benefits may be eligible for an installment plan. If payment is made within two weeks of the PCN issue date, the fee will be reduced. Please consult the information on the notice for the precise amount. To avoid incurring supplementary fees, payment must be submitted within 28 days of the PCN issue date.

6.3 Quick guide on applying for a UK student visa STUDY ENGLISH IN THE UK (SHORT TERM STUDENT VISA) THIS IS A SHORT-TERM STUDENT VISA ONLY FOR THOSE WHO COME FOR AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE. THE LENGTH OF THE COURSE WOULD BE BETWEEN 6 AND 11 MONTHS. The application fee is £ 200 plus a Healthcare surcharge.

For courses length from 12 months, the type of student visa would be different depending on the pupil’s age: CHILD STUDENT VISA For pupils who are aged between 4 & 17 and planning to study at an independent school.

6.5 What are the fees for the Guardian Service?

Before we move along how guardians charge for their services, it is worth remembering that a guardian will take legal responsibility for your child, provide a place to live during holidays/half-terms and act as 24h emergency contact in case of an emergency.

Guardianship providers usual provide different levels of services that meet your needs. The more comprehensive it is the higher the price would be. However, some basic fees that guardians would charge for their services will be as follows: REGISTRATION FEES This may cover initial visits and communications between the school, parents and students. This is usually a one-off charge.

GUARDIANSHIP TERMLY FEE Gives access to all the services offered by the guardian. This can be paid per term or annually (a total of 3 terms per year).

HOMESTAY DEPOSIT This is the fee to book your child the accommodation for their half-term or term break if they are not going back home.
