PRESIDENT'S LETTER Greetings Benilde-St. Margaret's Families and Friends: Every organization, every school, pursues progress on its own terms understanding that it is a necessary condition for long-term health. The past few months at Benilde-St. Margaret's have included several significant demonstrations of progress. First, as the second semester began, we celebrated the completion of our notable renovations. Since then, students have flocked to the natural light and unique design offered by those spaces. Second, BSM's next strategic plan was formally adopted by the Board of Directors outlining our path toward the future.

Three years ago, the plans to significantly renovate learning spaces took center stage in support of our unique academic programs and flexible use needs. Those early ideas were shaped over time into specific plans involving our faculty and staff members, creative architects, keen designers, expert builders, and financial investment from our benefactors. In June of 2018, construction began and throughout the summer, fall, and early winter the plans began to materialize. On January 22, BSM students, faculty, and staff were welcomed into the new Atrium, which houses a tiered classroom and performance space. Three modern science labs were also unveiled supporting our biomedical science and chemistry programs. This substantial project is truly a blessing blending purpose and design for our Red Knights. Alongside the building project, a representative group of stakeholders have also been involved in the creation of BSM's next strategic plan over the past eight months. An audit and professional assessment conducted by Meitler Group engaged students, faculty, staff, alumni, religious and business leaders, along with others from our community. Through those channels, we built an understanding of the current educational environment, identified our strengths, and articulated our opportunities for the future. The vision forward for Benilde-St. Margaret's is built upon four core pillars - Exceptional Academics, Being Catholic in the World, Vibrant Community, and Investing in the Future. The plan embraces Saint John Paul II's notion that we must, "Remember the past with gratitude. Live the present with enthusiasm. Look forward to the future with confidence." As our school evolves, we will remain connected to our history, rooted in a holistic educational approach, and committed to our community. At Benilde-St. Margaret's, we have experienced many of God's blessings over the past several months. As we prepare for Easter, my hope is that you also share in these blessings while keeping Jesus in your hearts.

A SPACE TO

IMAGINE. INNOVATE. INSPIRE. By Megan Peterson, Director of Marketing and Communications

Just over two years ago, a facility study was completed and two of the top priorities that emerged were BSM's science facilities and the need for more collaborative space for students.

4

| Spring 2019

Seven months after breaking ground on the school's $8 million Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. capital campaign in June of 2018, BSM was able to address those priorities with three state-of-the art science classrooms, flexible college-style seating areas and a tiered amphitheater performance and collaboration space christened The Atrium. The new spaces opened up to Red Knight faculty, staff and students ahead of schedule and just in time for the first day of the second semester. These areas are already becoming an integral part of the BSM community, with a stream of Red Knights filling the new classrooms, Atrium, and flexible seating areas every chance they get.

September 2018

State-of-the-Art Science Classrooms The new science classrooms are giving students access to science and medical equipment along with the resources necessary to engage in real-world research and experimentation that can grow and expand over time. Chemistry, including BSM's new AP Chemistry class, along with the Biomedical Science classes have already begun using the new classrooms. Students in Biomedical Science 1: Investigations, taught by Jen Roushar, are learning how the systems of the body work together to maintain health with the use of Vernier technology and professional medical equipment. Students will be conducting research on diseases of the body and then acting as doctors to diagnose and treat fictitious patients. In an adjacent classroom, AP Biomedical Seminar Teacher Mark Peterson's students are studying current areas of effectiveness of stem cell therapies, studying the impact of skin damage from sunlight using digital UV imaging and proposing claims and arguments related to various medications. "The new science classrooms provide students with the space and resources they need to conduct their own research using leadingedge medical equipment and tools. I love seeing the students working and collaborating!" said Dr. Susan Skinner, senior high principal. Additionally, inspiring scripture creatively incorporated with periodic and atomic chemical elements are making a splash on the classroom walls, reminding BSM faculty, staff and students of the school's greater purpose and Catholic mission.

The Atrium The Atrium is already serving BSM in a variety of ways, enhancing the exceptional education and opportunities the school provides students. The tiered design allows for more than one class to gather together, allowing for deeper discussions and multi-grade collaboration. A few days after the space's grand opening, Theology teachers Ms. Becca Meagher and Mr. Jeremy Cramer reserved the space for their 7th and 9th Grade Theology classes, where more than 50 students met to explore topics around spiritual growth. During the class, seventh graders in Ms. Meagher's Religion 7 Seminar class interviewed freshmen in Mr. Cramer's Christology class about how their relationships have changed with others from junior high to senior high. Central to the discussion was the role their faith journey has played in their relationships as part of the unit, "Relationships with Others." "The Atrium allows us to have enough space so that our classes can collaborate but is intimate enough that the students and teachers can easily interact," said Ms. Meagher.

6

| Spring 2019

In addition to serving as a space for collaborative academic learning, the space is supporting students by providing an engaging and comfortable place to study individually, in small groups or the chance to simply take a brain break. "I love the tiered style seating. This area lets me work on homework alone or with the input of my friends," said Taylor Williams, a BSM sophomore. The Atrium will also provide much needed space for student activities and athletics meetings, parent meetings, college rep visits and guest speaker events. Additionally, BSM is looking forward to hosting special events and small theater and choir performances in the new space. Faculty and staff experienced one of the first performances in the space by the BSM Red Knotes, which many say was a special moment for the Red Knight community. "The new space provided an amazing backdrop to our students' performance, which gave me goosebumps! It was an inspiring experience to see our students shine in such an exciting way," said Ms. Anne Dougherty, an engineering teacher at BSM. "I feel so proud to be a Red Knight and part of this community."

Flexible College-Style Seating Areas The new space also offers several new flexible seating configurations, providing additional areas for student study and group project work. It's rare to find one of these spaces without students engaging in conversation and collaboration.

Remembering our Catholic Roots The school's Catholic mission continues to remain at the forefront at BSM with the installation of a cross affixed to the outside of the tiered classroom space, funded through the campaign. On November 20, 2018, all BSM students, faculty and staff gathered for a special blessing and cross raising ceremony. Father Tim Wozniak and Mr. Mike Jeremiah led the group in a prayer of gratitude and a blessing for the new space.

The Design The new space offers a contemporary look and a large, striped sound enhancing wall, featuring BSM's school colors. One of the most important design features includes the large windows, natural light and modern light fixtures, giving students the chance to study in a bright yet calming environment.

Curricular Enhancements and Tuition Assistance Phase one of the campaign has also included support for curricular enhancements, including the addition of several Advanced Placement science courses. Committed to providing an exceptional Catholic education to those who demonstrate a desire to attend BSM with a passion to get involved, the campaign also includes an increase in tuition assistance resources through endowment funding. 8

Additionally, a large Red Knight logo hangs over the hallway entryway, emphasizing the community's Red Knight pride. Led by Opus Construction under the direction of President Adam Ehrmantraut, Ed.D and CFO Natalie Ramier, the space was designed by Miller Dunwiddie Architecture and InUnison Design in conjunction with the science department. "It has been one of the most rewarding parts of my job to have been a part of this process to provide our students and faculty with new learning environments. I've loved every minute of it," said CFO Natalie Ramier.

A Special Thank You and Next Steps Thank you to BSM's generous community of parents, alumni, and friends who helped make phase one of the campaign a reality. Your generosity truly matters and will influence the lives of both current students and thousands of Red Knights in the years to come. Right now, BSM is in the process of securing an additional $2M to complete phase two of the campaign, which will include an innovative learning and support center. Â If you'd like to get involved or would like more information, contact BSM President Adam Ehrmantraut, Ed.D. Thank you to the BSM community for helping build a bright future for every Red Knight! RED KNIGHT LEADERSHIP AWARD Penny Meier

Randy and Gail Ross

Parents often get pulled into Benilde-St. Margaret's gradually, generally connected to the experiences of their sons or daughters. Penny Meier lived that experience when her daughter Paige '16 began as a student in 2012.

Randy and Gail Ross joined the BSM community when their daughters, Mary Pat '15 and Josie '17, became Red Knights. The girls were very involved in drama and speech which meant Randy and Gail were immediately building props, running errands, feeding performers, serving as judges, being timekeepers, and doing anything else that was needed. They instilled that very same spirit in their girls.

Penny quickly got involved working as a member of the Benilde-St. Margaret's Board of Directors. She worked most closely with the school's development efforts. During Penny's time on the Board, she was the chair of the Advancement Committee and a critical supporter of the current capital campaign. In some of the most challenging circumstances, BSM realized some of the best fundraising results in the school's history. Without question, that progress was connected to Penny's insights and efforts. Penny's contributions went beyond the world of development. She constantly brought a "glass half full" perspective to any important conversation. She understood how to encourage others and the impact that had on the individual and the school. She also took a special interest in helping BSM staff members on an individual basis. Penny is finishing her final year as a member of the Board of Directors so recognizing her as the recipient of the Red Knight Leadership Award is especially fitting.

BSM

Randy also served on the Benilde-St. Margaret's Board of Directors for six years bringing a skilled human resources and leadership perspective to the group. He was absolutely instrumental in the shaping of effective processes and recruitment related to school board service. The nominating committee was one of the groups benefiting from his expertise. While juggling his multitude of obligations, Randy always found time to serve as a mentor to young professionals. Combined, Randy and Gail are a force of positivity that moves in the same direction, promoting generosity, humility, hospitality, Hall of intelligence, and laughter. They are gracious to a fault, helping build real community at BSM.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Colonel Steven Whitney '88

Meghan Lind DesLauriers '99

Colonel Steven Whitney graduated from Benilde-St. Margaret's in the Class of 1988. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and simultaneously completed the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program as a distinguished graduate to earn his commission as an officer in the Air Force. Through the years, Colonel Whitney has served in a wide variety of space system acquisition and operations leadership positions within the Air Force, the Joint Staff, and the National Reconnaissance Office.

Meghan Lind DesLauriers is a graduate from the Benilde-St. Margaret's Class of 1999. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Boston College and continued her education at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. After passing the bar exam, Meghan accepted a position as an associate at the law firm of Dorsey & Whitney in 2008.

In 2015, Colonel Whitney was named as the director of the Global Positioning Systems Directorate. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was launched by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1974 and became fully operational in 1995. It provides critical positioning capabilities for our military as well as commercial users around the world and is maintained by the United States Air Force. In his role as the director of GPS, he leads a team of more than 1,000 military and civilian members to develop, buy, launch and sustain the Global Positioning System. This includes the satellites, the ground command and control system, and the military user equipment. He also sets the standards and specifications for civil GPS use, enabling our ability to get from place to place. The $38 billion GPS program has an annual budget of over $1 billion and is the largest satellite constellation in the Department of Defense. Colonel Whitney was recently selected for promotion to brigadier general and will be assuming that rank later this year. He is married to Dr. Lynnette BSM Whitney and they have three children.

As a first-year associate, Meghan worked on many cases for the Mayo Clinic. Her extraordinary skills as a trial lawyer were evident early on in her career and she has been described as "prepared, poised, well-spoken, and persuasive." As her experience grew, so did her client base. Today, she represents clients in a broad array of general business lawsuits with an emphasis on healthcare litigation. Her focus includes medical malpractice defense, counseling for professional associations, and representing physicians before the Board of Medical Practice. Meghan was named an MSBA North Star Lawyer from 2012-2014 and has been designated as a Rising Star by Minnesota Super Lawyers. In 2016, she became a partner at Dorsey & Whitney and has successfully assisted corporations and non-profits on all sides of legal disputes. She also has significant experience addressing international legal issues. In addition to her corporate life, Meghan is active in the bar associations and serves as the secretary of the board and chair of the governance committee at Benilde-St. Margaret's. Her track record of giving back does not end there, however. She also represents domestic abuse survivors and underserved populations in pro bono cases. Good news for the BSM community, Meghan is married to another Red Knight, Mike DesLauriers '05. With two Red Knights in the family we can only hope that both Hall of of their daughters, Jane (3) and Kate (12 weeks), will follow in their parents' footsteps.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD Tim and Stacey Nichols

Mark Whitmore

From sequins to softball, Stacey and Tim Nichols have covered many miles in their Red Knight journey – both figuratively and literally. It all started with Abby '16 and dance team but Stacey quickly added the Spirit Shop and the Parent Association to her schedule. She got her PA feet wet with the Just for Parents series but definitely found her groove as the Parent Association treasurer. Filling the role of treasurer on the Parent Association Board is not an easy task, but Stacey was a perfect fit and a big contributor. She streamlined many of the procedures, kept the event chairs on budget and finances in check – no small accomplishment.

Little did Mark Whitmore know when daughter Maddie '14 came to BSM, what opportunities the activities of Will '17 and John '19 would offer him. Three consecutive years of very successful football coupled with junior varsity and varsity basketball kept this dedicated dad very busy.

Hannah's '18 basketball games occupied winter nights but softball was ever present. Tim coached BSM's off-season dome team for two seasons and, in what really shows commitment, he continues to coach the team this winter even after Hannah's graduation. Tim and Stacey were always on hand at games to do the virtual scorebook program on an iPad. This included time after games as well checking the accuracy of each play and finalizing every game. Tim might have a new career in maintenance or a stint as a long-haul truck driver. He shoveled snow off the field in an effort to get a few days jump on outside practice, cleaned the concession/storage shed from top to bottom, and organized and put equipment away. He served as equipment chauffeur to Wabasso, Mankato, and other points west. Concession items also needed moving when the team hosted tournaments or games at other parks. Coach Adrian Wagner summed it up best, "If there was a need for help in any way relating to BSM softball, Tim and Stacey were there to help." Rumor has it that this might also be the case going forward. They definitely believed the phrase "once a Red Knight, always a BSM Red Knight."

Being a captain's dad for football is a daunting task. The bar was set very high by Mark's predecessors and he lived up to all expectations. Mark ran the football booster club for two years and coordinating all of the groups that make up the booster club is a monstrous job. That also means overseeing the media guide that ultimately provides many of the things needed for the program. According to Coach Hanks, "Without Mark's hard work and dedication, the program would be a shell of what it is today. I know that he spent every waking moment working on booster club tasks. I am forever grateful to him and his family." Communication is key for captains and their parents and the Whitmores earned an A+ in that category. Keeping everyone "in the loop" is not easy. Feeding information to adults is one thing, but feeding teams of growing boys is a whole different story. "We started out with this amount of food and quickly had to send out for reinforcements" is a common phrase for parents hosting team gatherings. It makes sense that the Whitmore kitchen needed an update this year after all of the Red Knight events in Plymouth. Athletes often send requests to parents in the stands. Sometimes the needs are shouted, sometimes told quietly at the fence, sometimes demonstrated. This past fall, at John's request, Mark dutifully headed to the car for the pickle juice to help one of the players! Who knew it was a remedy for cramping? Mark's trip to the car was a perfect example of his dedication. Whatever was needed for any Red Hall of Knight, Mark Whitmore was there to help.

g n i l a e r H o f n o i s s a P BSM ALUMNI DISCOVER

Written by Hannah Palm, Marketing and Communication Specialist

Anne Ford Moore, M.D. '81

Medical school alone is a big undertaking and BSM graduate Anne Ford Moore took on the challenge all while raising two very young children with her husband Terry and her third child on the way. Yet, this was just the beginning for the '81 alumna. Moore, a 2015 Volunteer Service Award Hall of Honor recipient, credits Benilde-St. Margaret's for helping her thrive, despite her busy schedule, "BSM helped me develop my study and organizational skills. BSM stressed the importance of being self-motivated and gave me the self-confidence to push through setbacks. It also contributed to my faith, which I've relied heavily upon during my career and life." Medicine has been an interest of Moore's since she was a young girl, and she thanks her dad for helping her pursue her passion, "Although I developed an interest in medicine in my early teen years, my dad strongly encouraged me to pursue medicine," Moore said. Moore currently works at TRIA Orthopedics Center as a physician in sports medicine and primary care orthopedics. On a daily basis, Moore sees patients, peds-elderly, with various orthopedic concerns, you name it, she's seen it - from head to toe. The best part of doing it all? Moore says it is simply the fact that she gets to help people, "Helping people transition from pain/injury to healing/function is very rewarding. The fact that people entrust their orthopedic care to me is also rewarding," she said.

& HELPING OTHERS

Valley Health Center for children and adolescents with a focus on mental health, as well as working as a counselor at the University of Minnesota in the HIV clinic. No two days at work have ever been the same for Moore. Her career has taken her down many paths, and she is grateful for the people she gets to meet every day, "Developing relationships with new people every day is an added bonus. I love the fact that no two days at work are the same - unique patients each with their own history and exam findings require every patient's plan to be a bit different and it keeps me thinking every day." On top of her full-time job, Moore's busy and challenging lifestyle includes a variety of callings, all of which she's extremely passionate about. Moore works as a team physician for Benilde-St. Margaret's, the Minnesota Magicians (NAHL) and the Minnesota Whitecaps (NWHL) hockey teams. She also serves on multiple committees at TRIA and is a proud member of the Jack Jablonski '14 Believe in Miracles Foundation. Moore attributes many of the relationships in her life to her time spent here at BSM, not to mention, all three of Moore's children are BSM graduates: Madeline '11 recently engaged to Greg Zeman '11 and working at Target headquarters, TJ '13 playing professional hockey in Denmark and Auggie '16 currently playing junior hockey in New York. She is grateful for the BSM community where she has had the opportunity to meet, "many wonderful people" and develop countless "friendships over the years." In fact, a memorable moment in her career ties back to BSM, "It was 2012 at the MN state high school hockey tournament. Jack Jablonski '14 was recently injured and there were many highs and lows with several players on the team that week. I was involved with a lot of behind the scene activities trying to keep athletes healthy and in games. Then the team won the championship! We had the post-celebration at my house with many members of the BSM community." And this is why we say, "Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!"

Moore attended undergrad at Marquette University majoring in Psychology, then went on to get her MC in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University and received her MD from the University of Minnesota. She's had an extensive and wide variety of career focuses. Some of Moore's previous work includes being a counselor at Golden

At BSM, it is our mission to provide opportunities, coupled with a quality education that allows students to find their passion and reach their highest potential. It is the reason why our alumni go out into the world prepared for whatever lies ahead. In the story below, two alumni share their stories on how BSM empowered them to do just that, and find their passions for healing and helping others.

Mike Nemanich, M.D. '85 As a junior in high school, most students are worried about their ACT scores or college placement, but for BSM alumnus Mike Nemanich, it was in his junior year of high school that he decided what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. With the advice of a classmate and influence of his father's job as a surgeon, Nemanich decided early on that he was going to be a doctor. "My dad [now a retired surgeon] was a big influence on thinking about my career but it was not until my junior year when a classmate of mine at BSM said, 'You know, Mike, you would make a really good doctor!' It was funny because sort of at that point is when I really kind of committed myself to a future in medicine," he said. This marked one of many ways BSM helped spark his love for his vocation. Another one of his very first memories of his love and interest in science was in Mr. Wander's physics class. "He showcased all of these really neat physics experiments and it was really cool. You could tell the teachers were really excited about what they were teaching, their subject matter and they wanted us to succeed. I think it exemplifies what great teachers we really had, and memories like those make me very grateful for my time at BSM," he said. After graduating from BSM in 1985, Nemanich went on to attend St. John's University for undergrad and then attended Mayo Medical School for pre-med. He spent a total of nine years in Rochester as he completed his Orthopedic residency at Mayo Clinic. Having a love for the Twin Cities, Nemanich made the move back in 1998 to begin his private practice in general orthopedic surgery. Around the same time, Benilde-St. Margaret's was in need of a doctor to help support the trainers and BSM's athletes. With a strong interest in sports medicine and a strong athletic background playing all three seasons every year at BSM, he happily accepted the job.

In 2006, Nemanich's brother Joe '93, an orthopedic surgeon and one of his three siblings to graduate from BSM (George '83 and Mary Nemanich Ruff '87), joined his practice. With a family full of doctors, it is only fitting that the most memorable moment in his career was when, all three of them, Nemanich, his dad and his brother, Joe, were in surgery at the same time at the same hospital. "The neat part about being in medicine in general, whether you're a doctor, nurse or therapist, every day you have an opportunity to make a positive impact on people's lives. It really has been the most rewarding thing being a doctor and I love coming from a family of them." Nemanich credits much of his success to BSM and the opportunities he had attending a smaller school, "It really allowed me to be involved in a lot of different things. I was not only involved in sports, but also involved in student council and other various clubs. I had the opportunity to make a lot of mistakes along the way and I learned more from those than I did successes. The smaller school was a big part of what made me ready for success in my future in medicine." Over time, Nemanich's practice has evolved from more general orthopedics to a very specialized (l-r) Mike's brother Joe '93, father, George Sr., Mike '85 focus on joint replacement. Being after performing surgery at the in practice for more than 20 same time and same hospital. years now with 1,000+ surgeries under his belt, it is no wonder why Nemanich was voted 2018 "Best Doctor" in Minnesota Monthly. He also was honored by BSM as a 2005 Hall of Honor Volunteer Service Award recipient. His advice to current Red Knights thinking about and contemplating their future career paths is to do something that you enjoy. "If you are somebody that likes working with people, if you want to have a positive impact on people's lives, and you like science and math, then medicine might be a very good fit for you. It is a bit of a long road and you have to commit to it, but it's well worth it in the end." Countless Benilde, St. Margaret's Academy and Benilde-St. Margaret's graduates have done great things for our world by serving others. We are grateful for the doctors, nurses, therapists and all of those in the field of medicine working to help others heal mentally, physically and emotionally. Thank you from your Red Knight family!

"Dancing at the state tournament is an unexplainable feeling that I have been so fortunate to experience these past five years. My best memories of high school have been made year after year on this special weekend," said Knighette senior Caroline Pauly '19. This year's state tournament was emotional for many senior Knightette parents as well. "We have always watched Caroline dance on the state floor with a fluctuating mix of excitement, nerves, and pride," said Knightette parent Anne Marie Dominguez. "I have truly enjoyed being a part of this dance team family. I am so grateful for all of the memories!" said Knightette parent Heather Scherer.

"Our winning state program was a Paula Abdul remix, which even back in 1999 was a real throwback. That song will always remind me of our team and bring a smile to my face," said Katie Oberstar Ugarte, another '99er. "I have to say my most cherished memories are those behind the scenes," said Katie Segner '14. "The love and passion you and your teammates have for each other and for dance is what truly makes an everlasting impact." Many dance team alumnae had the chance to wish the team luck at a special gathering where they caught a glimpse of the Knightettes' routine on Feb. 6. "Go get 'em girls! Enjoy the ride, be each others' greatest supporters, and, most of all, have a blast!" said Catie Scherer Brackin '99.

This year's state competition also marked a special moment for many BSM dance team alumnae.

From the entire Red Knight community, congratulations to the Knightette family on your tremendous accomplishment and the long-standing legacy that will live on for years to come!
