PRESIDENT'S LETTER Summer Greetings Benilde-St. Margaret's Families and Friends: On Sunday, May 19, two hundred and twelve seniors, the Benilde-St. Margaret's Class of 2019, joined their parents at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Minneapolis to celebrate their baccalaureate Mass and brunch, a truly beautiful tradition.

During Mass that morning, Father Tim Wozniak '66, provided his perspective on this year's graduates, "the Class of 2019 is a group that makes things new again." Each graduating class has an identity developed over time based on the individuals and their experiences at BSM. That identity often reflects the story of the school. Father Tim's observation succinctly reflected our students' journeys and the tenor within the walls of BSM over the past year.

The Crown & Shield cover story highlights a truly distinctive experience for our alumni and students, blending those groups together in new relationships. Alumni from St. Margaret's Academy, Benilde High School, and Benilde-St. Margaret's enjoyed breakfast and a short program together drawing decades of professional experience and a shared love for the school. Relationships like these continue to drive a vibrant Red Knight community.

Beginning last summer and throughout the course of the year, a great range of BSM stakeholders were involved in a broad-based strategic planning process designed to aggressively define our school's path into the future. A new plan was thoughtfully constructed. Rich History. Radiant Future. shapes a new vision forward focused on truly exceptional learning for our students and an intense investment in the vibrancy of the Red Knight community.

Our significant and new changes to the building were broken in by the Class of 2019 beginning in the winter. Based on the early successes of the current Imagine, Innovate, and Inspire capital campaign, three new modern science laboratories became the home for new strands of Advanced Placement science curricula. Additionally, a strikingly contemporary atrium with a small performance space has become the place to be for our students. In that same spirit of new and as a part of our capital campaign, we have begun designing a novel space to develop innovative and creative thinking.

That morning at baccalaureate Mass, it was clear how interconnected the Red Knight community is as alumni parents stood throughout the room while being acknowledged.

It was a wonderful reminder that the success of our students over the long-term depends on the whole of our community. Once again our educators, benefactors, and volunteers created opportunities "to make things new again" at Benilde-St. Margaret's...thank you!

at Annual Breakfast

Ninety-five alums returned to BSM and filled the halls

on May 1, 2019, to join the BSM seniors for the annual AlumniSenior Breakfast. The breakfast is a special event for graduating seniors, started in 2015, to connect seniors with Red Knight graduates. It is an opportunity for the alums to tell their college and career story and to give the soon-to-be graduates advice about heading out into the world. The event is held annually on May 1, National College Decision Day, which marks the deadline for seniors nationwide to declare the college they will attend. It is an exciting day for seniors and marks the end of a long and sometimes difficult decision-making process. The seniors are seated at breakfast in small groups with three alums per table and the conversation revolves around college advice and tips for a smooth transition.

Alexandra Campion Young '04 gave the keynote speech during the breakfast program. A lawyer by education, Alex is the founder and executive director for the Center for Girls' Leadership and works as a staff engagement manager at WSB, a civil engineering firm. Alex's message was perfect for this group of seniors who are ready to leave the safety of BSM and head in a new direction.

It is amazing how many people I run into who have a connection to BSM." Thomas Forby '19 (son of alumnus Tim Forby '86) enjoyed networking with alums and recognized the importance of the Red Knight connection at this event, "It was very cool to see all of the alumni back and to interact with them. It truly showed me how important this place and its people are." Estelle Beutz '19 (daughter of Chris Beutz '86) also recognized the impact that alumni leadership plays within our community, "It was memorable how happy the alums were to come back to BSM to share their legacy with the senior class."

The alums and the seniors share a Red Knight experience that is deeply rooted in the BSM community. The community has nurtured them through formidable teenage years and given them the tools and knowledge to embark on the next leg of their journey. The Red Knight experience has shaped who they are, given them confidence, and pushed them to believe in themselves and their abilities.

my experience of changing paths over my college career by transferring schools as well as changing my major. I think letting the seniors know they don't have to know everything about their futures now is reassuring." Senior Lauren Winston found Molly McClurg's advice to be very personal to her. "The advice resonated with me, because I have dreamed of attending medical school and becoming a doctor. However, within the last school year I started to reconsider this.

I now have interests in career fields besides medicine, such as business and marketing. I am confident that because of my Benilde-St. Margaret's education, I am prepared for success in college."

Instead of rushing through the moments I told them to make sure they have closure with this chapter of their lives. The BSM community stretches far and wide and the reality is that the impression you leave in these final days can have a lasting effect."

2019 valedictorians show off their new school colors

The top scholars in the Class of 2019 will be heading east to pursue their educational dreams. Three graduates will go a short distance east, to the University of Minnesota, and the other four will keep traveling, to Notre Dame, Georgetown, Clemson, and William and Mary. These seven students have been involved in a wide variety of academic and athletic co-curricular activities. Their schedules seem overwhelming and make their academic accomplishments amazing. Sara Ben is choosing to stay in Minnesota and pursue a degree in business at the Carlson School of Management.

The business and marketing classes at BSM steered Sara in that direction. "Business was never my thing, but it became my thing when I came to [BSM]," Sara said. Sara is fluent in French and Arabic, and she feels that speaking multiple languages will definitely help her in the business world.

The Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame will welcome Estelle Beutz. Although she is not certain what area of business she will pursue, she is excited to head to South Bend. "I selected Notre Dame because it is a great school that has connections all over the country.

It also has a very strong community feel and is rooted in its Catholic faith."

Unsure of a major but confident she has "found my people," Sally Calengor heads to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. A busy student-athlete at BSM, Sally will hang up her hockey skates and check out the lacrosse team and the many club and intramural sports. "I've been involved in sports since before I can remember so I know that no matter what happens, next year will definitely be different."

Sydney Johnson's interest in finance, accounting, and management information systems led her to Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. Following her nine siblings to BSM gave Sydney an advantage when it came to advice on classes, teachers and time management. However, she did mention that she felt the need to work extra hard to prove herself if one of her siblings was not necessarily the "ideal student" in a particular class.

Medical school and a career as a surgeon are the longterm goals for Grace Knoer. Her science classes at BSM solidified her initial interest in medicine and Georgetown seemed the perfect spot to continue her education. The academic rigor at Georgetown and the area were most appealing. "There are countless opportunities for internships and modern programs in a city like DC and I'm fully prepared to take advantage of that fact."

Maddie Marusich hasn't decided what type of engineering she'll pursue but she's thinking mechanical, aerospace, or chemical. Her classes at the University of Minnesota will hopefully make all of that clear in the next four years. Maddie

was chosen as the speaker at the commencement ceremony on May 31. Not surprising, with engineering in her future, Maddie's message of growth and words of inspiration were presented in a very measurable and analytical manner.

Clemson University, in the heart of South Carolina, will be home to Walker Mullin for the next four years. "I was really drawn to Clemson as a totally different experience. They have a great new business school, a beautiful campus and an amazing sailing team I am excited to be a part of." The lone male valedictorian, Walker credits his work ethic and "grind first, have fun later" motto with his success.

Three of the valedictorians are second generation Red Knights. Estelle is the daughter of Chris Beutz '86. Todd Johnson '77 is the father of Sydney, and Grace Knoer's mom is Gigi LaBore '88.

SALUTATORIAN HEADS TO MINNESOTA Sarah Kinney had Salutatory status all to herself.

Ranking second in a class of 212 is a major accomplishment, one undiminished by a single A-. According to Sarah, the answer to achieving success is very simple – work hard. She will take that work ethic to the University of Minnesota where she plans to major in engineering. She also plans to add a twist to the engineering with a philosophy or marine biology minor. Sarah's hard work theory will definitely be put to the test, and will no doubt continue to be effective.

It's every school's dream to have a student in attendance who truly understands and appreciates the value of learning, growth, and community – someone who is driven not by the desire to excel, but by the desire to improve themselves and the lives of those around them. For the last four years, 2019 Al Reger Award winner Sally Calengor has been exactly that person at BSM.

Singing is a beautiful way to share your faith, love, and joy with a community. For many, it's a nerve-wracking, anxiety-inducing experience, but for 2019 Al Reger Award winner Matthew Hansberry, it was one of the many wonderful ways he was able to give back to the BSM community. Whether it was on stage in a musical, in the rafters of a choir concert, or in the Great Hall during countless school Masses and pep fests, Hansberry could always be seen excitedly sharing his talent.

Calengor began her freshman year with the intention of getting involved immediately, and in as many things as possible. She understood BSM to be an "equal investment type of environment," and she wanted to get as much out of her time at school as she could. She joined multiple clubs such as Student Council, Red Knight Volunteer Corps, and many others. "The more activities I joined and the more I stepped outside of my comfort zone, the better my experience became," Calengor said.

One trait all Al Reger Award winners must exhibit is an outstanding dedication to BSM. Calengor exemplified this behavior in her steady and far-reaching leadership. By the time she was a senior, Calengor had been chosen to be a captain of both the girls' hockey and lacrosse teams, vice president of her class, as well as a Link Crew leader to help guide incoming BSM students. Calengor understood that leading puts you on a platform, and she made the conscious effort to use that platform to encourage the next leaders at BSM. "Most importantly, I wanted to make sure that I was a role model to the underclassmen I was surrounded by," Calengor said.

While her leadership at BSM undoubtedly made the school a better place, possibly even more admirable was Calengor's dedication to service. From working events with the Red Knight Volunteer Corps to jumping in to host the 2018 Homecoming pep fest, Calengor could always be seen going the extra mile to make her community a happier, more loving one. She would doubtless have been just as involved no matter where she attended school, but to Calengor, the wonderful, faith-filled community of BSM made the call to give her time, effort, and dedication that much harder to ignore.

As Calengor looks forward to the next adventures her future holds, the lessons she's learned and the invaluable wisdom she's gained at BSM are not lost on her. "Do I look back on the person I was freshman year and think 'yes, I want to be her again'? Absolutely not. But I know that I needed to have that learning curve-academically, athletically, and socially--in order to become the person I am today. I am proud of myself and what it has taken to get to this point, including the mistakes," she said.

Calengor is gearing up to leave Minnesota behind for her next chapter in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she'll be attending the College of William and Mary. But while a change of this magnitude would make many nervous, Calengor isn't afraid. "I know that I will always have a home at BSM, which makes this huge jump just a little less scary."

Hansberry began singing right away at BSM. His favorite memory of BSM took place his freshman year when he was able to get up in front of the whole school and sing an original song. He then continued singing throughout high school: first joining the school choir, then the school's newly formed acapella group, and then finally the school's theater department. Hansberry credits much of his growth at BSM to these experiences as well as to the choir teachers Adam Petroski and Nancy Stockhaus. "They taught me resilience and how to do what I love," Hansberry said.

His involvement didn't end with singing and the arts, however.

Hansberry was very involved in athletics as well, playing baseball, basketball, and football throughout his time at BSM. He found he grew a lot through the seasons. "They taught me how to be a team player and how to work hard at everything I do," Hansberry said.

Inside the school building, Hansberry enjoyed being a constant positive and reaffirming presence. The Al Reger Award is given to those who found a way to make a difference in their time walking the halls, and Hansberry believes it was this joy he brought to school every day that helped make it a better place. "I believe I've made a difference by being happy, positive, and friendly all the time," he said.

Hansberry also has a very strong faith, one he feels grew stronger at BSM. He tried to incorporate his faith into everything he did--from his singing to his athletics, from his schoolwork to his friendships--he found faith in all of it. "Faith has been the backbone of everything. From going up to the plate and drawing a cross to just going to church; it has all helped me become the man I am today," Hansberry said. For him, the community at BSM was able to help encourage and guide him into finding this integrity in his spirituality. "BSM taught me how to keep my faith strong through all times," he said.

In the coming months, Hansberry will begin at his new school, the University of St. Thomas, where he plans on studying finance and economics. He is both excited and scared to be leaving BSM behind for this next chapter, but he hopes to find as strong and loving a community at UST as the one he is leaving behind.

Hansberry has left a wonderful impact on the lives of many, and he hopes to do the same in the following years: "I will continue to share what I believe along with using my gifts to help others."

UNIQUE RED KNIGHT BATTERY EARNS TOP

Athletic Awards

Co-ed baseball/softball is not a Minnesota State High School League sport, but if it was, BSM would be ready. Dylan Drees, a pitcher for the Red Knights, and Isabel (Izzy) Fleming, the softball catcher, were named the top athletes in the Class of 2019. Both Dylan and Izzy also excelled on the basketball court, and Izzy started the school year with the cross country team.

The 6'9" Drees definitely used height to his advantage on the basketball court. However, it was his 3-point expertise that often surprised opponents and thrilled the crowd. And, a dunk here and there was another crowd pleaser. Captain of this year's team that notched two decisive wins over the always-powerful Cooper Hawks, Dylan was an All-Conference selection and the team's MVP. Varsity coach John Moore '74 noted, "Dylan has great communication skills and he has the ability to balance his competitiveness and his enjoyment of the game. As the team captain, he was able to keep us loose, but at the same time he was

able to elevate his game and our team to achieve our best. His unique perspective made him a privilege to coach."

In the Drees tradition, Dylan was an imposing figure on the mound.

Dad Tom and brother Derek '17 both made their mark as pitchers.

With a fastball and breaking balls that kept batters guessing, Dylan earned All-Conference honors and the Coach's Award. A team captain, Dylan received praise from Coach Andy Judkins. "He is a great leader and consistent performer on the mound. He leads by example between the lines and competes when he has the ball in his hand." Dylan's free spirit was evident in baseball as well.

Judkins added, "His personality is what makes him fun to be around and is what draws people to him."

Three-sport athletes are somewhat of a rarity these days, but Izzy Fleming made the three-sport commitment look easy. Cross

country coach Casey Hanson had high praise for Izzy. "She was a tremendous leader for the team. Her work ethic pushed teammates to be the best. I often referred to her as the lumberjack because she worked so hard to improve – she just kept 'chopping the wood pile.'"

Humor was part of Izzy's charm as well. According to Hanson, "she would often lighten the mood of a hard workout or race by keeping everyone laughing."

In the winter, Izzy headed to the gym and her favorite sport. Her leadership ability and basketball skills were definitely on display in the gym. Three varsity letters and three All-Conference honors were well-earned. According to Coach Bob Lyons, "Izzy was a special player because she played all five positions on the floor. Whether it was playing the point or guarding the opponent's post players, Izzy did so effectively and willingly. There haven't been many players like Izzy over the years."

Softball was the one sport that provided Izzy with a ticket to a state tournament. The 2016 team was the first softball team to make a state tournament appearance and the Red Knights placed fourth.

And, in 2018 and 2019 the team made a return trip to the state tourney. Although enthusiastic chatter is a hallmark of softball teams, Coach Adrian Wagner pointed out that "Izzy is a quiet leader who provides a calming influence for our team. She doesn't get too high or too low and is ready for whatever is asked of her. Izzy's versatility and focus have meant a lot to our softball program these past four seasons." On occasion she has shed her catcher's gear and headed to the outfield to help the Red Knights.

This unique battery did not limit their contributions to the diamond.

Strong student-athletes, Dylan and Izzy gave their best to all of their sports and brought their teammates with them. With hard work, a good-natured approach, and a touch of humor they shed their defensive gear and hit a home run for Red Knight athletics.

Each year, BSM honors outstanding faculty and staff by presenting several awards: Faculty of the Year, Staff of the Year, Apple Polisher Award, and Parents' Choice Award.

John Groess - Faculty of the Year

In the great scheme of things, two years does not seem like a long time. However, just two short years have provided enough time for math teacher John Groess to make his mark on the BSM community, an achievement acknowledged in his receiving the Faculty of the Year award.

Having been teaching at the American School of Madrid, Spain, for a few years, Groess felt it was time to come home to Minnesota. Then, when a position opened up at BSM, he decided to apply. Math Department Chair Mary Seppala vividly remembers John's Skype interview: "You could tell right away that he'd be dynamic, energetic, and passionate about teaching math."

In presenting him with the award, Dr. Susan Skinner noted these same traits: "He has high energy, is always positive, and has a unique ability to make math fun for his students."

BSM counselor Fran Roby feels that Groess's ability to connect with students is not only limited to math: "He connects with kids in a way that shows he really cares about them." And then there's the singing! John's students know that he is liable 14

to burst into song at a moment's notice; it's just another way this math teacher keeps his classroom upbeat and engaging.

Groess continues to be thankful that he made the decision to come to BSM; he says it's easy to be happy and smiling in an environment that fosters acceptance and respect on every level of the community "from Dr. Ehrmantraut all the way down." In his self-deprecating way, he feels it "isn't normal to be a guy who's crazy about math, frisbee, and singing," but says he's delighted to be "in a place that supports and encourages that even more than simply accepts it."

Whether it's encouraging them to read by displaying his current book of choice on his classroom door, recruiting them to join his Ultimate (frisbee) team, or helping them understand math concepts, Groess goes out of his way to motivate students to live life with passion and curiosity.

We are so lucky that John Groess has found his way to BSM, and look forward to many more years of his making a mark on our community, with a smile on his face and a song in his heart!

Megan Peterson - Staff of the Year Stories. Where would we be without them? They tell us about our past, they inform our present, they influence our future. Benilde-St. Margaret's story is rich and everchanging, so it requires a skilled storyteller to share it with the world. Megan Peterson is an expert storyteller whose creativity and vision have been deservedly recognized in the Staff of the Year award.

Peterson joined the BSM community with an impressive resumĂŠ of experience in marketing and communication ranging from the TV news industry to positions with Gillette Children's Hospital and the South Washington County

School District. Peterson said she has always had a passion for telling stories about students. Not only was she excited to further that passion at a school "so highly regarded," but Benilde-St. Margaret's offered something even more important to Peterson: "I have a strong faith and being able to celebrate that every day at work made the position seem like not only the perfect fit, but a dream job."

According to Peterson, joining the BSM community in July 2018 "has been a life-changing experience. The school spirit, the welcoming environment, and the excitement students, faculty, and staff bring to our hallways every day is truly inspiring." She was immediately eager to use every means at her disposal to broadcast the BSM story to the world.

Her gifts of inspiring students to discover themselves and their values has earned Calli Olson the Apple Polisher Award this year, a special honor chosen by students to recognize an exceptional person who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to students.

Within her first year, Peterson has worked passionately to show off our school in creative and inspiring ways, but perhaps her most innovative project has been the first ever BSM Lip Dub music video! With her charismatic energy, enthusiasm, and focus, Peterson pulled the project together in record time so that it could be rolled out for this year's Day of Giving on May 16. This impressive feat was only surpassed by the financial success it helped to garner with a record number of donations on the day.

Ever humble, Peterson credits all the successful results of the Lip Dub "to our students, faculty, and staff." However, as Dr. Ehrmantraut noted in presenting her with this year's staff award, it is Peterson who is primarily responsible for this and so many other projects, all of which have a direct impact on our community: "Her commitment, creativity, and positivity touch every aspect of our school in some way and it is apparent the impact has been tremendous."

According to a Native American proverb, it takes a thousand voices to tell one story; we are so fortunate to have one very gifted and special storyteller in our community to tell ours. Thank you, Megan Peterson, for your passion and your dedication to our school; we can't wait for all the stories you have yet to tell!

Ms. Calli Olson has had the gift of time, moving up from the junior high to high school with her students. She has walked with them through adolescence, now teaching them again as sophomores and juniors. She knows her students and knows what inspires them quite well.

For Ms. Olson, an English teacher, teaching is about relationships first – establishing a safe and open culture in her classroom to discuss challenging topics that are of interest to students.

Often discussions are based on current events or stories running across their social media feed. Do they know the issue? Do they know their own point of view? High school is a place to learn to think critically about all the information that forms our values. Ms. Olson provides a space for that reflection to happen. She has a gift for facilitating deep and open conversations that allow every voice in the room to be heard and respected. It's a space of openness. And it is in the challenge of critical thinking that they grow to understand themselves and their point of view.

For Ms. Olson, one of her favorite units addresses willful blindness. How in the face of contradictory evidence do individuals sustain their deeply held beliefs? The students scour media reports for stories that challenge their idea of truth. Then, she invites them to pick a topic, AND study it deeply and write a paper or do a presentation that will persuade. She meets individually with every student to discuss their thesis, their

sources and how they will set aside their own biases in pursuit of truth. It's the one-on-one connection that allows students to talk about things that are meaningful to them. It's a time for student voice and choice that enables Ms. Olson to bring out the best in each student.

Olson is also a JV soccer coach and has had the opportunity to coach many of the women that are now in her class. "It's another level of deep connection," she shares. Working with both JV and varsity athletes, she experiences their joys, their frustrations, their motivations, and their competitive spirit.

Spending time with students in and out of the classroom; it builds a relationship that inspires.

Like many teachers at Benilde-St. Margaret's, Ms. Olson knows that relationships come first, and learning will follow.

Her gift of time allows her to know her students, hold them to a higher level and challenges them to go further. With the Apple Polisher Award, our students have shown appreciation for a teacher who challenges them to grow.

Erin Siats - Parents' Choice Award "She is an amazing teacher! She sees the very best in every student, celebrates successes (small or large) and truly cares for the well-being of her students."

The gratitude of parents expressed in the nominations for this year's Parents' Choice award winner came from the heart.

They were parents who witnessed a reluctant reader pick up a book outside of school and show an interest in reading.

They saw student confidence grow, which in turn improved academic performance in other classes. They were parents who saw first-hand the impact one teacher can make in the life of a student when a trusting relationship is a precursor to the curriculum.

Erin Siats, who teaches English, joined our Red Knight family only two years ago. For students who used to dread classes that required a lot of reading, this teacher has made all the difference.

In Ms. Siats' class, every day starts with ten minutes of choice reading. "My students struggle to read," she said. "When they get choice in what they read, they are more motivated to read, and becoming better readers takes practice." She knows that when students aren't interested in the material, they

are less likely to tackle a difficult text. And building any skill requires regular practice. When students practice daily, their fluency, rate and stamina improve.

Siats can push her students beyond their expectations, because they trust her and because she gets to know each student well. "I get to know students through the books they choose and through conversations about the text they are reading," she added. "Building a positive relationship is crucial."

When a student is not excited about school or reading, coming into high school is hard. Relationships and listening are critical to the connection. "I listen to what is hard for them, where they struggle." Then she draws on activities and resources to teach strategies that will help them practice and achieve. "We set realistic expectations and goals. Not every day is easy. We hit walls," she admits, "and we practice overcoming them."

The impact goes beyond her classes.

Many of Siats' students have found success in their religion and history courses — the classes where they are asked to read challenging materials. "They draw on the strategies they have learned from me and find ways to access the content: reread, annotate, have the materials read aloud, and talk about what they are reading." Building fluency, comprehension and stamina opens a world of opportunities only possible because a relationship provided the key to unlocking the mind.

How will this Parents' Choice Award-winning teacher be remembered? She hopes her students will say, "that I cared.

I cared enough to see them when they struggle and support them so they could gain confidence and find success."

The parents see that as well. "She provides a personalized and caring style of teaching. Quality of work and instruction over quantity. She builds a student's confidence and enjoyment!"

After many years of dedicated service to Benilde-St. Margaret's School, four employees are moving on to the next adventure. Each of these individuals has made a lasting impression on the Red Knight community, and we wish them well in their retirement.

Fran Roby started at BSM in 1989 and served as a guidance & college counselor as well as a video journalism teacher. He and his wife, Maura, have two daughters who graduated as Red Knights, Katie '03 and Bridget '06. Fran has thoroughly enjoyed watching BSM evolve over the last thirty years. He will miss the professional teachers, wonderfully supportive parent community, and talented, and kind-hearted students.

Anne Moen joined the BSM family in 1991.

She started in the kitchen, filling in, and when a job in maintenance became available, she was hired. Anne and her husband, Dave, have five children who graduated from BSM; Mary '92, Chris '94, Stephanie '96, Mike '97 and Suzy '00. Anne plans to spend time with her grandchildren and has a Disney cruise already booked for her retirement.

Over the years, Anne has enjoyed being involved with many BSM events and has developed great relationships with staff and parents along the way.

Sharon Ingalls's Red Knight career began with a position working for Taher while daughter Emily '06 and son Jake '08 were

in school at BSM. She left for a brief time to pursue another position but says she was "lucky enough to return" in August 2012 as the BSM health aide/school nurse. Above all, Sharon has enjoyed the wonderful community, students, staff, and faculty who "made coming back to BSM feel like coming home."

Bob Spotts has worked in the maintenance department for six years (three years parttime and three years full-time). A dedicated and hardworking master of all trades, Bob was seen painting, hauling, fixing, or hanging items all over the school. In his retirement, Bob plans to spend more time with his special trade, cabinet making.

In 2004, Little Knights opened as an onsite daycare for children of BSM faculty and staff; under the loving direction of Miss Veronica and Miss Lindsay, these three classmates played, napped, and sang songs about colors, letters, and baby Jesus. Miss Veronica, lead teacher, recalls "Having three independent 4- yearold girls in the classroom brought its fair share of drama. But it also brought countless opportunities for the girls to learn many skills such as conflict resolution, patience, and compromise. I am so proud of the strong young women they have become, and am truly blessed to have been able to have been their first teacher at BSM." Going separate ways for elementary school, they reunited as

"sevvies," endured eighth grade speeches and Wolf Ridge, and walked together again at junior high graduation in 2015. Bonnie O'Connor recently received the Minnesota Independent School Forum Community Champion Award.

The award celebrates the work of an individual or group that has benefited a school and the community in which the school is located. Bonnie is chair of the Board of Directors at Risen Christ Catholic School in Minneapolis and has been involved at the school for over a decade. Her work has been extremely beneficial to the school.

Michael Walsten has written a novel, Separated at the Border, that was recently published. It is a suspenseful story of a young freelance journalist who teams up with her former journalism professor - an ex-Army Ranger - to fight human trafficking and abuse in the Florida Everglades. Paul Hazuka has been selected as the new principal for Cathedral High School in New Ulm.

Dolly Steichen Lowery and a team of specialists have developed a software program for children with autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. The program, "Brainy Act," is an interactive video game that helps strengthen weak connections in the brains of children with developmental delays, helping the children better handle tasks like reading and writing. Dolly is the CEO of Kinuu, located in Minnetonka.

Lisa Hendrickson Shaughnessy is the new chief advancement officer at Benilde-St. Margaret's School. Lisa is a proven leader whose 30-year career has focused on advancement, program development and management, communications and volunteer coordination for non-profits, Fortune 500 companies and educational institutions.

Stephanie Bisson Belseth is a pediatric nurse practitioner and founder of the Newbridge Health & Wellness Clinic in Edina. It is a holistic pediatric/family/adult wellness center focusing on healing complex chronic mental and physical conditions. Stephanie attended the College of St. Catherine for her bachelor's and master's degrees, and has previous experience with Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Minnesota Public Schools, Minnesota Department of Health, Children's Hospital Oakland, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

SHINEBOX, a Minneapolis agency specializing in creating disruptor brands, has named Tina Jansen White its first CEO. She joins the agency from BBDO where she was vice president of operations. She also serves as an adviser to the board for MPLS Madwomen, and she previously worked for Carlson Companies, Target, FWRD and Martin/Williams.

Gina Wright Tupper is head softball coach at Concordia Academy in Roseville. Concordia Academy's Taylor Brunn broke the all-time hit record in Minnesota high school softball this year. The record was held by BSM's own Maddie Houlihan '15. Maddie congratulated Brunn on the new record and Coach Tupper was grateful for the support and encouragement from her alma mater.

Augsburg University men's basketball alumnus Devean George, a multiple NCAA Division III All-American player for Augsburg University who became an 11-year NBA veteran and three-time NBA champion, was honored by the NCAA during the Division I Final Four. He was recognized as one of seven 2019 "Living Legends" for his community service in the Twin Cities and for fostering inclusion in athletics.

Patrick Bottiger was recently granted tenure at Kenyon College where he is a professor in the history department. He specializes in early American history and Indigenous histories.

Mike and Becky Jacobson are pleased to announce the birth of Ellen Grace on May 30. Ellen's big sister, Emma, is 3. Mike is an account manager at Great Northern Company and Becky is a science teacher and tech coordinator at Hopkins West Junior High. The Jacobsons live in Minnetonka.

Tracy Johnson was recently named the fourth head women's hockey coach at St. Olaf College. Previously she spent six seasons as the head women's hockey coach at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland. Tracy is a 2010 graduate of Boston College with a degree in marketing. She played in 125 games for the Eagles and captained the team as a junior and senior.

Kaia Preus was selected as the recipient of the 2019 Author Fellowship through Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing (MVICW). She will continue to work on her novel this summer. MVICW is committed to providing financial support to writers through their fellowship programs.

Greta Wiessner was named a 2019 winner of the Edwin R. Keedy Cup, Penn Law's internal moot court competition. In addition, Greta was named Best Oralist. She graduated from Boston College with a bachelor's degree in international politics and communications.

Greta is a senior editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and is a Toll Public Interest Fellow. After graduation, Greta will clerk for the Honorable Theodore McKee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Honorable Wendy Beetlestone of the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Will Dunn has been hired as the Minnesota Lynx's video coordinator. Will joins head coach Cheryl Reeve's staff after spending the 2018-2019 NBA G League season with the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Mad Ants, serving as the team's basketball operations intern. Prior to his time in Fort Wayne, he served as a basketball coach at Benilde-St. Margaret's and he played collegiately at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul where he was a member of the 2016 NCAA Division III championship team. In his role with the Lynx, Dunn will provide video edits on opposing teams and statistical and analytical data on Lynx and opposition play calls. Additionally, he will assist the coaching staff in creating scout game plans for each opponent.

Andrew Birkeland completed his Masters in Accounting at Creighton University. He will be working at KPMG's Minneapolis office starting in the summer months as their internal adult and enterprise risk function.

Allie Kohler was published in the Journal of Mammalogy in the discovery of UV-fluorescent flying squirrels. Flying squirrels shine bright pink when exposed to UV light. Allie is a graduate student in the Texas A&M University wildlife and fisheries department in College Station.

McKenzie Swenson is the tournament and volunteer coordinator for Sanford International Golf Tournament.

The tournament enlists over 1,000 volunteers and runs September 16-22, 2019, at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Leni and Sam Merriam recently graduated from USC. Leni earned a B.S. in business administration from the Marshall School of Business. She will be moving to New York and working for J.P. Morgan in middle markets. Sam earned his B.S. in economics/ mathematics with a minor in business finance. He will be staying in Los Angeles and consulting with KPMG. Ben Newhouse was named to the U.S. Men's National University Hockey Team that competed in the 2019 Winter World University Games from March 1-9 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. He is a junior redshirt at Northern Michigan.

PHOTO 13 Maddie Houlihan, a right fielder for the Gopher softball team, has started all but one game in her four-year career at Minnesota. She missed the one game because of a family funeral. She has been a very important part of the team's success and their first-ever trip to the NCAA Women's College World Series. Maddie has collected numerous softball awards along the way and graduated with a degree in business and marketing with a minor in sports marketing. Eli Cave, a student athlete at St. Mary's University of Minnesota, was named to the 2019 MIAC Men's Basketball Second Team All-Conference. Eli led his team in scoring with a 19.2 ppg average and was second in scoring in the MIAC.

Will Whitmore writes for an online sports website called "Breakdown From the Bench" and is also a part of a sports podcast called "Beyond the Badgers" at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is primarily focused on the NBA and College Basketball. Whitmore is applying to the school of journalism in hopes of pursuing his sports journalism career.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced the winners of its 2019 Gold Circle Awards on Thursday, January 31, for the work of the 2017-2018 Knight Errant staff. The entire staff won first place in Editorial Writing. In addition, Carolyn Mason placed first in Single Feature Photography and Michael Koch placed first in Photo Illustration.

Riley Miller, a guard on the men's basketball team at the University of St. Thomas, was named to the MIAC All-First-Year Team.

What must we do in the future to sustain the level of excellence for which we are known today?

OUR 2025 STRATEGIC PLAN Benilde-St. Margaret's enjoys a reputation of excellence in education as a Catholic college preparatory school with a rigorous and holistic approach. And in a rapidly changing world, we cannot afford to become complacent. We must take time to reflect and plan for a dynamic future. To that end, a representative group of stakeholders assembled as a strategic planning team over the last 18 months, charged with envisioning the future of our school.

That vision came to fruition on Feb. 20, 2019 when the BSM Board of Directors formally adopted the school's new strategic plan, Rich History. Radiant Future., that will guide our work through the year 2025 and beyond.

Our learning community embraces its role as part of a Catholic community accompanying students and developing their personal faith while actively leading them to live and serve according to their values. In an increasingly complex world, incredible challenges are presented every day. We hope to inspire in our students an understanding of the powerful role faith can have in their lives. Faith can offer moments of deep introspection and call one outside of oneself, to make meaningful change. True faith, rooted in our Catholic tradition requires action. First, we will strengthen Catholic identity to enrich spiritual experiences for students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. This will call for increased collaboration with local parishes and pastors to strengthen Catholic youth experiences. It also includes enhancing employee orientation with deep learning of our Catholic mission, charisms, and religious heritage, along with each employee's responsibility for living and witnessing that tradition. We will then solidify the connection between service experiences and Catholic social teaching, and enrich the theology curriculum focusing on student engagement.

We will be shifting from a oneyear planning model to a five-year ongoing cycle aligned with our strategic plan. We will build development revenue through the endowment, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, and capital campaigns.

And we will enhance board governance and school leadership continuity, ensuring there is a process for committees and succession plans for the future.

Benilde-St. Margaret's embarks on our strategic plan from a position of strength and stability. In the last year, we acquired from the archdiocese the land on which the school sits; this will bring long-term security and financial savings. Over the past two years, enrollment trends have been encouraging, despite the challenges that many Catholic schools in the Twin Cities are facing; in fact, the demand for a Benilde-St. Margaret's education has exceeded our capacity.

Building on our reputation of excellence as a college preparatory school, we will bring forth innovative and meaningful learning experiences, so that each student can find his or her place in the world. Our collective experiences will provide the preparation, confidence, and ethical foundation required to thrive beyond the walls of BSM. With the constant presence and support of our alumni, Benilde-St. Margaret's will be poised to deliver its mission for generations to come.

Lacrosse defender Sally Calengor '19 was named to the All-Metro first team and the All-State second team. She was also named an All-American and was an All-Academic selection. Grace Juckniess '19 was also an All-Academic selection. Piper Ehlen '21, a midfielder, received All-State Honorable Mention recognition.

Seamus Foley '20, a defender, was All-Metro and All-State first team. Long-stick midfielder Tucker Turrittin '19 was all All-Metro and All-State first team. Jack VanOverbeke '20 and Jack Budniewski '20 were named to the All-State first team and the All-Metro second team.
