President’s Letter Hello from Benilde-St. Margaret’s!

It is so wonderful to have everyone – students, faculty, and staff – back together again on campus. Whenever I ask people what makes BSM special, they’ll say something like, “You can just feel it when you walk through the doors.” And indeed: when you walk through our doors and see this community in action, you can’t help but feel the magic.

I can only imagine how it felt for those who opened the doors on the newly co-educational Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in the fall of 1974. If I had to guess, I would presume it was a bigger version of how we feel at the start of each school year: a little nervous, a little excited, and yet steadfast in their commitment to providing the exceptional educational experience that was the hallmark of a St. Margaret’s Academy education and a Benilde High School education. Fifty years later, we carry forward their mission and vision, bringing it to life each day at BSM.

These alums are the BSM mission come to life: educated, empowered and inspired leaders contributing meaningfully to their communities and beyond. Today’s students are walking in their footsteps, challenged to be innovative, inspired, and known for their passion, drive, and service to others.

Rewind

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Benilde-St. Margaret’s, meet five Red Knights who experienced life during each of the first five decades of BSM as members of the Classes of 1979, 1985, 1999, 2014, and 2020. Sharing their unique experiences while students, these alums reveal how BSM played - and continues to play - an important role in shaping who they are and their futures.

Chris Koch '79 Please recount a meaningful experience you had while a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s: It’s hard to pick just one, there are so many. I recall cross-country hill workouts; Ron Kretsch brought glazed doughnuts to those who made it. In all my years, I missed only one of those workouts. It was a chance to have a low-pressure task to focus on. And the glazed doughnuts were simply awesome.

How did your participation in co-curricular activities and athletics and the school community shape your experience at BSM? I was able to meet people, I had the opportunities to work on projects that had some meaning and to learn new skills which turned out to be lifelong interests. The support I got from everyone was so formative. It’s all about being able to contribute with what you have; in cross-country, it was cheering everyone on, and in my races, running as fast as I could (and trying not to be dead last!), but also showing others that it's important to show up and give it your all.

Who made a meaningful impact on you while at BSM? It’s a long list: Sister Saint Kevin, Sister Mary Lang, Father Louie, Ron Kretsch, Ms. Schroepfer, and Mr. Wander. They showed a vested interest in the students as people as we grew from kids to adults. And they did so with respect. They set examples and expectations. They provided opportunities to earn, not give; as when you earn something, you carry its value with you for a long time.

What inspires you to remain an active member of the BSM community today?

I’m inspired to give back to the very community that gave me a lot; and to help maintain the core values that make BSM a great community. Times change, but the basic values of Catholic faith, strong academics, and a place for co-curricular activities help forge a sense of belonging. I’m also inspired by how many are engaged within the BSM community. When I come to a basketball game, the parking lot is packed, and oftentimes it is because there are two or three other events at the same time on the campus. How can you not be inspired?

What makes you proud to be a Red Knight?

The school is such a positive influence on many areas outside our community. BSM creates part of the foundation that makes so many other things happen. BSM graduates become positive forces in our metro, state, and country. Being a Red Knight means you can cheer on record-setting astronauts and Olympic gold medal athletes. Red Knights have made their way into many walks of life as coaches, teachers, business owners, BSM presidents, doctors, lawyers, priests, nuns, and just good citizens. I’m proud to be part of that community.

Tom Lynch '85 Please recount a meaningful experience you had while a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

How did your participation in co-curricular activities and athletics and the school community shape your experience at BSM? I played soccer and participated in track & field, student council, band, knowledge bowl, and the yearbook. Through these activities, I met my best friends. While class was important, it was the time with friends that was the most memorable.

Who made a meaningful impact on you while at BSM? The teachers. They consistently went above and beyond to ensure that we were not only prepared academically, but also ready to be contributing positively to our community. Mr. Joranger and Mr. Sundrum are memorable because they challenged me to think about our world differently. Mr. J showed me the power of kindness.

Please describe your current connection to BSM. I am an alum and parent; our three sons graduated from BSM and our daughter is a junior. Also, I currently serve on the board of directors.

What inspires you to remain an active member of the BSM community today?

The mission of BSM. The school continues to inspire its students to achieve great things. It is amazing to hear the unique stories of former students and how they continue to serve through the world.

How has BSM changed since your time as a student? How has BSM stayed the same?

The facilities have changed; we have a Haben Center, a new chapel, a second hallway, a junior high, and turf fields to name a few. Also, BSM students are looking beyond the midwest for college and our community stretches to all corners of the world. Yet, the spirit of the school remains the same. We are still committed to serving our communities wherever they may be.

How has a faith-based community like BSM shaped your perspective on community and life in general?

Being a part of a faith-based community provided a foundation for thinking about life from a spiritual perspective, which was reinforced by the shared experience among my classmates. After I left BSM and joined more secular communities, the foundation helped me understand myself and others better.

In 1985, Tom was a member of the BSM Quiz Bowl team, and well known for his ability to play Trivial Pursuit.

Catie Scherer Brackin '99 Please recount a meaningful experience you had while a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s: I look back on the time I spent on retreat weekends while I was at BSM and remember those weekends as being a meaningful time of reflection and growth. They truly helped shape me during my teenage years and those lessons have continued into my adult years.

Who made a meaningful impact on you while at BSM? Although I look back fondly on many of my teachers at BSM, two people stick out in my mind who made a meaningful impact on me: James Cave, my soccer coach, and Mary Fran O’Keefe (aka Miss O,) my student council advisor.

How has your BSM education been impactful in your life?

My BSM education prepared me to thrive academically at the College of St. Benedict, but more importantly, it prepared me to be a global citizen and positive contributor to society.

Catie Scherer Brackin '99 continued Please describe your current connection to BSM. I recently made a career change and have joined the BSM staff as the Alumni Relations and Community Events Specialist. Miss O. made such a meaningful impact on me during my time at BSM that I’m now back here and working with her!

What inspires you to remain an active member of the BSM community today?

As a mother of three, I want to give my children the same opportunities I had during my junior high and high school years. Staying connected to BSM provides them a connection to BSM so that they can come here and hopefully have the wonderful high school experience that both my husband and I had.

Why does BSM remain important for you?

Whether I went to school with the person or met them later in adulthood, I find that everyone I meet who was a Red Knight, no matter their graduation year, is someone I enjoy and want to spend time with. BSM just has a way of being connected to good people!

What is your aspiration for future generations of Red Knights at Benilde-St. Margaret’s?

I hope future generations of Red Knights feel the pride I felt, and still feel today, to be a part of the BSM community. Go out into the world, be kind, and do good.

Allie Kohler '14 Please recount a meaningful experience you had while a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s: During my time as a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, I had the privilege of participating in a profoundly meaningful class that has had a lasting impact on my life: Mr. Porisch’s ecology class. It was there that I learned to observe and appreciate the natural world and to become an active participant in its preservation. That was the catalyst that led me to study ornithology for my master’s at Texas A&M University and pursue a Ph.D. in ecology at Colorado State University. My passion shone through in these endeavors, leading to my current job position as a wildlife research biologist at the National Wildlife Research Center in Colorado. My journey from Benilde-St. Margaret’s to the world’s leading wildlife research facility is a testament to the enduring influence of passionate educators and the profound impact of a meaningful educational experience.

Who made a meaningful impact on you while at BSM? During my time at BSM, several individuals left a lasting impression on me. Among them, my science teachers, including Mr. Porisch, Mr. Lyons, and Mr. Lex, played a significant role in shaping my passion for science and guiding my life's direction. They eagerly engaged in discussions beyond class time, were flexible in adapting the course content to accommodate my learning needs, and their genuine enthusiasm for teaching was evident in every lesson.

How has your BSM education been impactful in your life?

The ability to establish meaningful connections with my teachers, and nurture my interests both within and beyond the classroom, played a pivotal role in shaping the course of my life.

Additionally, the college preparatory education I received equipped me with the academic confidence to distinguish myself among my peers and walk straight into my dream job upon completion of my Ph.D. Why does BSM remain important for you?

BSM remains important to me because I want to always remember my roots and the influential individuals who shaped my path. My experiences at BSM were pivotal in getting me to where I am today, and I frequently reflect on those times with deep fondness.

What is your aspiration for future generations of Red Knights at Benilde-St. Margaret’s?

I aspire to see future Red Knights wholeheartedly seize their opportunities at this exceptional institution, embracing the freedom to learn from their mistakes, forging new friendships, exploring their passions, and establishing lasting connections that last a lifetime.

Breah Banks '20 Please recount a meaningful experience you had while a student at Benilde-St. Margaret’s: A meaningful experience I can recount was the opportunity to speak in front of my class for Black History Month during my junior and senior years. The ability to share with my peers and friends genuinely meant a lot to me, and to do so during such a meaningful month heightened the experience. Another meaningful experience was the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural student internship program started by Dr. Steve Pohlen '86. I was provided with an immersive business and marketing internship opportunity with the Twin Cities Film Fest, which helped kickstart my passion for business and marketing.

What clubs, activities, or sports were you involved in as a student: I was involved in several clubs, activities, and sports as a student at BSM: I served as a speech club participant and captain, a mock trial club participant and captain, a Red Knight Volunteer Corps volunteer, a track and field athlete, a cheer athlete, a business management intern and founder of the Female Affinity Meeting (FAM). I remained academically involved in the National Honor Society, the National Language Honor Society, and the National History Honor Society.

How did your participation in co-curricular activities and athletics and the school community shape your experience at BSM? My participation in these aforementioned co-curricular activities and athletics at BSM shaped my experience by allowing me to find my voice and amplified my journey of learning more about myself.

Why does BSM remain important for you?

In 2020, Breah Banks was named most likely to be president, in 2023, as president of the SGA at Spelman College, Breah met with Vice President Kamala Harris (above)

Benilde-Saint Margaret’s remains important to me because of the clear impact it had on my middle school and high school journey. I am grateful for the resources and most importantly, for the teachers I had during my time at BSM. Teachers who would encourage me to challenge myself, teachers who would go the extra mile to offer office hours, and teachers who would open up their office space as an after-school area. Mr. J would always welcome everyone with a smiling face. It is clear that BSM has an impact and truly prepares you for college.

What makes you proud to be a Red Knight?

I am proud to be a Red Knight because of the legacy I came from, the legacy I left, and the legacy that I know I will continue. I am proud to have graduated from BSM after my brother, Brandon Banks ‘16. I am grateful for the legacy left by my younger brother Brian Banks ‘23. And I remain excited and look forward to the legacy ahead to give back to this institution and to provide resources for those like me.

CHEERS TO CELEBRATING

BSM's

Hundreds of alumni, families, and friends returned to the halls of BSM for a golden celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of Benilde-St. Margaret’s School on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023.

Welcoming back alumni, families, and faculty and staff from decades ago says so much about this school and its lasting impact. In every room and around every corner, Red Knight pride was on full display -Catie Scherer Brackin ‘99, alumni relations & community events specialist Familiar faces filled the halls for a night of nostalgia and celebration through the decades, complete with food stations featuring Taher’s famous school lunch favorites and a signature beverage - the Red Knight Razzle - generously donated by Tom Fournier ‘88. While perusing throwback memorabilia including trophies, letterman jackets, yearbooks, and photo boards arranged by decade, partygoers enjoyed live music courtesy of Levy Metal, a local rock band featuring two BSM alums, Lee-Jay Lira ‘90 and Chris Kern ‘91, and a BSM parent, Andrew Teitscheid, in its lineup.

Catie Scherer Brackin '99 noted the event celebrated 50 years of excellence in education and especially those who have helped strengthen the Red Knight community since 1974.

BSM president Danielle Hermanny ‘03 offered a toast during the gathering honoring all of those who made and continue to make BSM a community of academic integrity and Catholic identity. “To our past: St. Margaret’s Academy led by the Sisters of St. Joseph and Benilde High School led by the Christian Brothers and Benedictines who breathed life into this community. To our present: The men and women who work tirelessly in service to their students and each other. And to our future: The students we have yet to teach and the families we have yet to meet.”

The celebration is the first anniversary event being held at BSM with other events being planned. Special alumni recognition moments will be featured during athletic and activity events and throughout the school year to welcome alums back to campus. Hermanny is excited about the anniversary and what it means for the BSM community, “Here’s to Benilde-St. Margaret’s: where we have been, where we are, and all that is to come.”

There’s always something going on at BSM - here are some of the latest headlines. Be sure to visit www.bsmschool.org for the latest news and events of life at BSM. Creating Memories at Grandparents' Day 2023 Written by marketing and communications EPIC Intern, Sophia Wessling ‘25 Grandparents' Day at BSM is an annual tradition, bringing generations together for a morning of prayer, community, and memories. Over 600 grandparents joined their favorite Red Knights for Mass on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, followed by a continental breakfast on campus.

Students gave mini tours to their grandparents, showing them classrooms and their lockers, and for some grandparents, the event was an opportunity to show their graduation photo from among the decades of photos from St. Margaret's Academy, Benilde High School, and Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Presidential Installation On Thursday, Sept. 28, Danielle Hermanny ‘03 was installed as president of Benilde-St. Margaret’s School. The special prayers and installation ceremony were part of this year’s all-school 50th anniversary Homecoming Mass.

Bishop Michael Izen presided at the Mass and installation ceremony. In his remarks, he noted, “Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, sees our Catholic schools as opportunities for evangelization through an encounter with Jesus Christ in the classroom. Providing for this possibility of an encounter with Christ is directly related to what we are here to do this very day in the installation and inauguration of Danielle Hermanny, as President of Benilde-Saint Margaret’s School. In assuming leadership of Benilde-Saint Margaret’s, Danielle Hermanny affirms her commitment to the fundamentals of the Catholic faith that serve as the foundation of the school’s mission and purpose.”

For Rick DesLauriers, this was his first Grandparents' Day, and he was excited to celebrate with his first Red Knight grandchild, who is following in the footsteps of Rick’s three children. “As grandparents we know the difference a Catholic education makes for our families,” DesLauriers said, “We have a special role – we can encourage our grandchildren with our prayers and attendance at events like this.”

Mass was celebrated by BSM’s chaplain, Father Tim Wozniak ’66 and accompanied by members of the BSM choir and orchestra. As members of the BSM community the grandparents received a special blessing from Fr Tim at the conclusion of Mass while the choir sang a hymn for them. The students stood by their side offering their own prayers for their grandparents in a special moment shared by all in attendance.

Events like Grandparents' Day remind everyone of the strong bonds of community which exist at BSM.

At the conclusion of the Mass, Hermanny spoke about the significance of the event taking place during Homecoming week.

“It feels appropriate to me that my installation occurs during the Homecoming mass, since these first months as president have truly been an opportunity for me to come home to BSM,” Hermanny said, noting, “Know of my gratitude for this opportunity to come home to all of you: to be a part of your BSM journey, to have you as part of mine, and to be here to welcome you home when you move on from this place. You, and our entire BSM community, remain in my prayers. Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight.”

BSM Athletic Hall of Fame

Members of the 2023 BSM Athletic Hall of Fame include (l to r): John Moore ‘74, Jarred Oftedahl ‘13, Grant Besse ‘13, Angie Colley Hanson ‘00, Maddie Jobe ‘10, Lindsay Oman Ring ‘03, Shannon Reilly Daugherty ‘07, and Sanjay Lumpkin ‘12.

The BSM Athletic Hall of Fame was started in 2013 as a way to recognize and honor those alums who have made significant contributions.

Since then, 74 alums have been inducted. The following eight alums joined this prestigious group on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023.

If you would like to nominate a BSM alum to our Athletic Hall of Fame, you can do so at this website: www.bsmschool.org/community/alumni/ athletic-hall-of-fame John Moore ‘74 John Moore might be better known to most of you as Coach Moore. However, before he was a coach here at BSM, he was a student three-sport athlete, being named All-Conference in both football and basketball.

He was the starting pitcher for the baseball team which played in the State semifinal game. In basketball he was team captain, team MVP, WCCO Player of the Week, and second all-time single season scorer - only to be passed by alum Devean George '95 21 years later. In 1974 he was named to the top 20 scorers of the Central Catholic Conference, finishing in 5th place with a 15 points per game average. In his senior year, John was named the Al Blasing Award recipient. John also was in glee club and the school musical, Annie Get Your Gun! As a high school basketball head coach, John was a member of the prestigious Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association 300 and 400 win clubs. With 408 career wins, he is the winningest boys basketball coach in school history. John led teams to nine conference championships and three section championships with three State Tournament appearances, winning the State title in 2008. John was named Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year four times. Congratulations, Coach!

Angie Colley Hanson ‘00 Angie participated in soccer and track and field at BSM. She attended the University of St. Thomas, and was the MIAC conference long jump champion, and also No. 2 all-time in conference history at the time. She won UST’s 50th individual NCAA title, and placed 4th at the NCAA indoor meet in the long jump for her first career All-American honor. As a 3-time NCAA championships qualifier, Angie also competed at nationals in the 4x100 relay and triple jump. We are lucky to have Angie on our faculty at BSM, teaching religion and coaching track and field.

Lindsay Oman Ring ‘03 Lindsay played soccer and was an important contributor to both the girls basketball and track and field teams during her years at BSM. Lindsay was named the track team MVP, and broke the school record in the 100m High Hurdles, 300m Low Hurdles, 3x100 High Hurdles, and 3x300 Low Hurdles. She was the Conference champion in the 100m HH, 300m LH, and high jump, breaking the Metro Alliance Conference record in the 100m HH and high jump. She was Section champion in the 100m HH and 300m LH. After graduating from BSM, Lindsay walked on to the USC track and field team and competed in the PAC-10 Multi-Events Championships in 2007 and 2008, placing 13th and 10th respectively, and was on the top-ten all-time list at USC for the heptathlon with a personal record of 5,025 points from Texas Relays Track Competition in Spring 2008.

Shannon Reilly Daugherty ‘07 Shannon was a 4-year letter winner on the varsity hockey team from 20032007, and a member of the 2004 Minnesota Class A State Tournament champions.

Shannon was a captain, All-Conference, All-Metro, AllState, and the Hobby Baker Character Award winner. She went on to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes, was named as one of the WCHA All-Stars, and was a 4-year letter winner at The Ohio State University playing in 141 games. She recorded 21 goals and 56 assists, ending her Ohio State career with 77 points, and top-10 in Ohio State record book for defensemen scoring. After college, Shannon spent a couple of years playing professionally for Ladies Team Lugano in Switzerland. She now works in healthcare marketing and lives in Chicago with her husband Kevin.

Maddie Jobe ‘10 Maddie was a three sport athlete at BSM, participating in varsity soccer, hockey, and lacrosse. She was a four-year letterwinner who was named Minnesota Ms. Soccer in 2009. Maddie went on to play soccer for the Iowa State Cyclones. She finished as Iowa State all-time leader in goalkeeper wins (29) and shutouts (21), and was second all-time in the Cyclone record book with 319 saves. She finished her senior season with 91 saves, good enough for second best in the Big 12, and finished with a 0.784 save percentage. She recorded 7 shutouts her senior year. Congratulations Maddie!

Sanjay Lumpkin ‘12 Sanjay was an All Conference basketball player, team captain, and league coMVP. He was one of five finalists for 2011-2012 Mr. Basketball Minnesota. Sanjay went on to play basketball for Northwestern University.

At the end of his career at Northwestern, Sanjay ranked second in school history with

137 games played and fourth with 126 starts. He went on to play two seasons in the G-League, one for the Erie BayHawks, and another for the College Park Skyhawks. Sanjay has now found his way onto the bench as a coach, spending time as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, and this upcoming season for the Atlanta Hawks. Congratulations Sanjay!

Grant Besse ‘13 Grant was a 4 year varsity hockey player. He had so many points during his high school hockey career you would need a calculator to add them all up.

He is probably best known in MN for his performance in the 2012 state hockey tournament where he set a record when he scored five goals, including three short-handed, in the Minnesota State boys hockey championship game. He was named the 2013 Minnesota Mr. Hockey, and the Associated Press Player of the Year for Minnesota high school hockey. Grant continued his hockey journey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where in his four years there he posted 37 goals and 97 points in 138 games.

After college he played for a few years in the ECHL and AHL. Congratulations Grant!

Jarred Oftedahl ‘13 Jarred is three-time MSHSL state place winner, 5 time Junior National All-American, 3 time Fargo Junior National All-American in freestyle and greco-roman wrestling, and National Champion in greco and folkstyle. Jarred posted a 155-16 record as a high school wrestler at BSM. He went on to wrestle at St. Cloud State University.

He was a 2017 NCAA DII championship qualifier, All NSIC First Team Selection, and given the Iron Man of the Year award for the Huskies. Congratulations Jarred!

2023 2008 Dr. Molly Dillon McMahon just opened a boutique orthodontic practice, Anchored Orthodontics, in Minnetonka!

1968 John Lamb, at the finish line of San Diego’s Rock N Roll St. Jude Half Marathon, June 4, 2023. Running as a St. Jude Hero, John was their leading fundraiser with over $22,000 raised - much of which came from BSM alums!

1987 Sloane Struse graduated from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. He completed the 10-month resident program and earned a master's in strategic studies as part of his two-year Defense Senior Leadership Development Program (DSLDP). Sloane reports for his second year of training this fall to the Pentagon to work as a strategic planner with headquarters, Department of the Army, G-3/5/7 Army Initiatives Group.

2002 Carrie McConville Henningsgaard and husband Andrew welcomed triplets on July 28. Connor, Aubrey, and Camille have a big sister Britta who is 2. The very busy family lives in Plymouth.

Abbigail Christensen Novotny married Charles Novotny at St Bartholomew Catholic Church on October 15, 2022. Abbi attends Iowa State University in the veterinary medicine department and Charles works for Prairie Restoration in Watertown, MN.

2012 Spencer Williams married Emily Zangla on July 15 at St. Bartholomew in Wayzata.

Spencer is a corporate accountant at Cargill, and Emily is a pediatric nephrologist at the University of Minnesota hospital.

2020 Sophie Ludwig graduated from University of St Thomas, magna cum laude in the spring of 2023 with a degree in business management and a minor in theology. She graduated a whole year early thanks to the college prep work that BSM provided!

2013 Claire Larson Musech and Luke Musech were married on May 5, 2023, at Mont La Salle chapel in Napa, CA. The couple lives in San Francisco where Claire leads Operations at a startup, and Luke manages an e-commerce company.

2015 Jake Cassens and Leah Johnson were married on June 17. Jake is pursuing his Ph.D. in environmental health at the University of Minnesota and Leah is an intake and emergency assistance coordinator for Enriched Living.

2016 Ryan Lawyer married Katie King on June 10 at the top of Buttermilk Mountain, in Aspen, Colorado. Katie and Ryan met at Lafayette College and now live in Chicago.

Jasper Matz spent seven months abroad living in Madrid, Spain, and traveling to 16 countries during his time overseas. At the end of his semester he was offered an internship at a bond brokerage with Tradition España and returned in July. Jasper will be a senior at Case Western and is majoring in economics and business management.

Abby Dryer married Michael Marzec on June 10, 2023, in Boulder, Colorado. Abby is a nurse at Children's Hospital of Colorado and is working toward her doctorate in nursing as a family nurse practitioner. Michael works for OverJet in the analytics department.

Tommy Beutz won the CSCOE golf tournament at Dellwood Country Club on July 31.

FALL 2023 Play Ball! Minnesota’s Mr. Baseball Easton Breyfogle ‘23 was named 2023 Play Ball! Minnesota Mr. Baseball presented by the Minnesota Twins.

Guatemala Mission Trip A group of Red Knight students and teachers traveled to Guatemala over the summer for the annual Mission Trip, serving with The God’s Child Project (GCP) to build homes for families in need.

Jake Anderson Goaltender Award Brooke Nelson ‘23 won the 2023 Jake Anderson Goaltender Award for best senior goaltender in the state after guiding BSM girls’ lacrosse to a state championship title in the spring.

BSM Activities Fair Each year, more than 93% of students participate in at least one of the 26 athletic sports or 45 co-curricular activities available at BSM. To encourage participation, Benilde-St. Margaret’s hosts an annual Activities Fair in early September, when students can interact with the captains and student leaders in each co-curricular, asking questions and learning how they can get involved.

Christian Brothers Visit BSM Brother Larry and Brother Juan Manuel of the Christian Brothers visited BSM in late September. Meeting with students, they discussed the virtues of a Lasallian education and gave a sneak peak of the discernment retreat held in early November at St. Mary’s University. The brothers also shared insights about St. John Baptist De la Salle and Catholic education.

RoboCup Makes History in Bordeaux, France BSM’s RoboCup team competed in the 2023 International RoboCup competition in Bordeaux, France, achieving the highest competition score in BSM history. As the only high school in the world competing at the international collegiate event, BSM’s RoboCup team outperformed and outscored five college teams, missing the semi-finals by just one placement.

This is an exciting time for Benilde-St. Margaret’s. We’re in the midst of celebrating our 50th year and the many notable events over the past year are reminders of why it’s a great time to be part of the BSM community.

Most recently, we welcomed alum Danielle Hermanny ‘03 back to BSM as our new president. Danielle comes to us with a wealth of experience and an inspiring vision that ensures BSM will remain the premiere college preparatory school in the Upper Midwest for years to come. We are blessed to have Danielle return and lead us.

In the past year, we also established an Alum Board to nurture the connections between our thousands of alums from St. Margaret’s Academy, Benilde High School and BSM and also with our current Red Knights. As alums, each of you represents what our faculty and staff strive to provide for every current and future student - a thirst for learning, a passion for excellence, and a commitment to contribute in meaningful ways to society.

We live in a fast changing and ever more digital world which doesn’t always value personal connections. Yet, BSM remains firmly committed to providing students with a broad array of innovative classroom and co-curricular activities and athletic experiences that connect them with teachers and classmates in meaningful ways.

As Astronaut Mark Vande Hei ‘85 said during his visit to BSM in September 2022, “I was really reminded today that I’m part of a community - one with a legacy of having really enthusiastic students with a lot of potential.” This sense of community and innovation are part of the DNA at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, and the expansion of the EPIC internship program this year is another of our success stories.

These authentic learning experiences place students in real world situations where they contribute to projects that other students are only able to experience in college. BSM students are encouraged to be curious and passionate, and to use critical thinking in their efforts. All of this is possible because our students are known and welcomed for who they are and what excites them. This personalized approach sets BSM apart as a school, and is a major contributor to what families want for the development and enrichment of their children.

The financial commitments made in fiscal year 2023 are among the best in the history of our school.

Thank you for ensuring we can bridge the gap between our tuition revenue and the cost of our programs, and continue to offer the high-quality, holistic education we’re known for. Knight for All Seasons Supporters Our annual A Knight for All Seasons gala plays a vital role in fostering the sense of community and reinforcing ties among fellow parents, alums, faculty and staff, and friends of BSM. Additionally, this event provides vital funds to the school’s operating budget each year.
