Letter from Board Chair Dear BSM Families and Friends, Graduation at Benilde-St. Margaret’s is always an exciting time of year. As a parent and member of the BSM Board of Directors, I love seeing graduates full of enthusiasm and ready to take on the world. BSM has prepared our sons and daughters for their next steps in life by instilling a thirst for knowledge, inspiring a limitless curiosity, and offering wisdom in guiding them as people of faith.

The BSM guidance and college counseling staff play a vital role in this process by bridging the academic and social experiences for each student. Listening, asking thoughtful questions, and offering ideas, the counselors help students chart a path based on their unique hopes and dreams. I have seen this firsthand and appreciate how my own children discovered new opportunities in conversation with BSM counselors. This issue of the Crown & Shield highlights this labor of love for every student. As we conclude another school year, we say thank you to retiring faculty and staff. They have given many years of their life to BSM, and we will be forever grateful for their sacrifice and service. Thank you for all that you’ve done for the school and the students, and know you’ll always be a Red Knight with us. I also want to take a moment to thank Dr. Adam Ehrmantraut for his dedicated service leading the BSM community. The board has great respect for Adam and the positive impact his contributions had on our students and BSM. Thanks to his stewardship, BSM is well positioned to continue to thrive as the premiere Catholic school in the Upper Midwest. While Dr. Ehrmantraut will be a hard person to follow, the Presidential Search Committee is excited to have Meghan Lind DesLauriers ‘99 join as interim president, ensuring stability for the 2022-2023 school year. Meghan will guide us as we identify the right person to be the next president in the coming months.

Counselors Enjoy Front Row Seat to

Launching Red Knights

Success. It’s what every institution and every student strives to achieve. But how is it defined? How is it measured? As a college preparatory school, Benilde-St. Margaret’s aims to instill a sense of readiness in each student, so when they toss their cap on graduation day, they have the skill sets and the confidence to realize their goals in the world.

An integral department in making this a reality is BSM’s guidance and college counseling team. At BSM, each counselor supports around 180 students, which allows us to make closer connections,” counselor Vicky Haas shared. The strength of the department comes through these connections and is a driving force for why BSM counselors do the work they do despite the challenges of working in a helping profession. “I appreciate that at BSM, we do social, emotional, academic, and college counseling because it’s fulfilling to see students in all different aspects of their high school lives,” Kate stated. Red Knight Omar Lara-Mendez ‘22 has built relationships with the guidance and college counselors during his four years at BSM. “They’re all wonderful people who have helped me throughout my high school journey, especially Mrs. Wessman,” Omar said. “I was given good direction, emotional support, and motivation whenever I was distracted by other matters. I felt as if I was being carefully taken care of.” Omar credits his classes and connections for helping him find his passion for psychology and caring for others. Now, Omar is planning to attend the University of St. Thomas

and one day become a therapist himself. The counselors’ position allows them to truly follow students through the ups and downs of high school. Over the past two years, Red Knights, like many students across the globe, have experienced increased stress and hardships. “We try to help students see that they can meet challenges head on and work through the issues they’re experiencing,” counselor Heidi Wessman said. Whether it’s a difficult paper or learning to cope with a significant family change, students have a support system at BSM helping them navigate, confront, and overcome challenges in their lives. And when things are good, the counselors are there to celebrate too. Students’ interests grow exponentially during their time at BSM. “I think it’s really neat to see our Red Knights become passionate. I’ll meet with them senior year and see that they’ve created their own business or that they’re doing all these unique things within their communities,” Amanda said. However, it’s the growth in their character that is most rewarding: confidence, self-advocacy, maturity, and leadership. Growth was evident in Student Council President Emani Labon ‘22 who

sought out opportunities to get involved in the community and give back by doing service work with Link Crew and Red Knight Volunteer Corps. “I always felt supported by Mrs. Wessman; she always believed in me and was there for me in my time of need,” said Emani, who will be attending Spelman College in the fall. “It really is an honor to help students grow in their academics and as individuals, to support them during emotional periods of their lives, and I get to dream with them about their future,” Vicky shared.

Of course, graduation day is the ultimate occasion for the BSM guidance and college counseling department to rejoice. Amy admitted, “I get teary-eyed each year as I see students checking in before graduation, wearing their caps and gowns, and interacting with each other as they share such a monumental moment.” As the team hands out diplomas, the glances exchanged between student and counselor carry the memories of how far they’ve come. Pride from both parties is evident. “It feels good witnessing them taking those last steps at BSM and cheering for them as they go on their way,” Amanda said. Walking alongside students during their formative years is a true blessing. If success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, our Red Knights are well on their way to achievement thanks to the thoughtful work of the guidance and college counseling team and community of support at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Hats off to the Valedictorians:

Marquette University in Wisconsin will welcome Lauren Alinder, who has been accepted into the nursing program. Throughout her time at BSM, Lauren was active in multiple co-curricular activities including volleyball, medical club, science club, and Red Knight Volunteer Corps, though she never allowed them to interfere with her academic accomplishments. “For me, this academic recognition just shows how far I’ve come as a student,” Lauren said. Nicole Doering devoted her time to playing club softball, captaining the math league, co-founding BSM’s first Spanish club, and was an active member in Red Knight Volunteer Corps and National Honor Society. She excelled in her AP and honors classes while unearthing a passion for the engineering field. “I will be attending MIT and playing softball there, and I plan to major in chemical engineering,” Nicole shared. Cate Duffey is choosing to attend the College of St. Benedict in the fall of the year. Counselor Kate Berry said, "Cate lives every day with immense integrity. She has an intense drive to succeed academically but not at the cost of sacrificing her personal values or ethics. She has a strong moral compass that has guided her decision-making in really wonderful ways over the past four years.”

Knowledge Bowl team and engineering department. “He’s been a leader on our programming team – including being an integral part of developing BSM’s all-time-best-performing rescue robot,” engineering instructor Anne Dougherty said of Charlie. Sarah Portz will begin studying neurobiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall on her path to become a doctor. As a Red Knight, Sarah found a balance between school and fun by participating first and foremost in ultimate frisbee as well as Red Knight Volunteer Corps, National Honor Society, BSM’s EPIC marketing & communications internship program, and volleyball.

Salutatorians:

Elena Latterell has learned many lessons throughout her high school career, though she states “being accountable and following through with the commitments that you make” has been one of her biggest takeaways. Elena was involved with ultimate frisbee, Red Knight Volunteer Corps, National Honor Society, and Spanish club at BSM. The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is Elena’s next stop where she plans to major in dental hygiene and continue playing ultimate frisbee.

Ryan Long’s philosophy is that quality is better than quantity, and he’s implemented that mindset when approaching academic work. Ryan has been involved in a variety of BSM activities including the boys’ swim team, boys’ tennis team, Link Crew, and National Honor Society. University of Southern California is Ryan’s next step, and he plans to major in computer science.

Self-motivated and a go-getter, Ava Montpetit demonstrated her academic excellence and tenacity as captain of the alpine ski team, member of the lacrosse and volleyball teams, and involvement with Business Professionals of America, medical club, and Red Knight Volunteer Corps. Ava even started a non-profit organization for single mothers in the Twin Cities called Nurture Newborns. Ava will attend Boston College to double major in finance and psychology.

Academic success was just a piece of Teddy Madden’s BSM experience. He thanks his siblings Sofie ‘15, Billy ‘17, and Harry ‘20, for helping him choose which classes to take and setting a high standard of work during their time at BSM. Teddy captained the cross country, robotics, trap shooting, and ping pong teams. He created the chess and Chinese clubs at BSM and was the president of the National Honor Society. His next steps will take him to the University of Notre Dame to pursue either engineering or business.

Two of Patrick Mullin’s cousins were valedictorians at BSM, inspiring him to continue their legacy. Patrick made his own way at BSM as captain of the cross country and track teams, manager for the boys’ varsity basketball team, and president of the National History Honors Society. He also volunteered through Link Crew and Red Knight Volunteer Corps. Patrick plans to double major in economics and finance at the University of Wisconsin–Madison starting in the fall.

President’s Award Winners

In May, Dr. Adam Ehrmantraut presented the President’s Award to five notable members of the Class of 2022. These students share an identity as “true leaders” who have made their mark at BSM and beyond while offering their individual talents in many areas of the community.

Their academic endeavors reflect AP scholarship, mathematical analysis, engineering design, financial literacy, economic understanding, journalism, and multilingual mastery. Beyond the classroom, their involvement has stretched from the stage to the pool, field, and court. They have served their neighbors through

mission trips, National Honor Society, student council, and Eucharistic ministry. Thanks to their drive to excel and lead in their own unique ways, each of these Red Knights has helped define the school and make the most of every day.

Remarkable Red Knights Earn

Al Reger Awards

Who knew, 18 years ago, that childhood playmates would be the recipients of the prestigious 2022 Al Reger Award? The parents of Emily Zagaros ‘22 and Jeff Raymond ‘22 were high school friends, and their toddlers began their journeys in common surroundings. Now, at BSM, the two seniors were honored by the faculty and staff for “outstanding dedication and zeal to the service of God and school.” Jeff can best be described as a prominent young man filled with faith and conviction. He is genuinely respected by his peers because of the authentic way he interacts with everyone in his path. He has the gift of making others feel like they are the most important person in the world. He is hard working and outgoing and has positively conquered challenges along the way. Football, hockey, and volunteerism played a significant role in his Red Knight years. Jeff never fails to take the initiative to make his class, team, or school a better place. His classmates and teachers see him as a true leader, always standing up for the important principles in life that guide his actions. His Catholic faith is a deeply important part of who he is, and he shows this by how much he cares for his fellow students. Drake University in Des Moines will be his next academic stop to study actuarial sciences.

She has tackled the most challenging academics while being committed to athletics along with other co-curricular experiences. Regardless of the venue, Emily’s leadership is constantly on display. She demonstrates the power of grace and humility. Her humor, leadership, and dedication, in so many ways accentuate her special nature. Whether she is cheerleading in support of the Day of Giving, conducting challenging biomedical research, being honored as the Homecoming Queen, or shining on the dance floor, her presence is always noted. She will begin her collegiate experience focusing on medical nursing in Omaha, Nebraska at Creighton University in the fall. Partners in crime as 2-year-olds, Emily and Jeff certainly made their presence known at BSM. Their positive impact on the community is a testament to their strong faith and character.

Red Knight Athletes Mary Zavoral ‘22 and Brady Yakesh ‘22 definitely kept Red Knight sports fans busy and entertained during the 2021-2022 school year. In the fall, Mary was a defender for the BSM girls’ soccer team that finished 2nd in State. Winter found both student-athletes playing critical roles for their respective hockey teams. Fast forward to spring where Brady was on the baseball diamond and Mary was a short distance away on the lacrosse field.

Earn Top Honors Her awards are numerous and include three all-conference honors, a team MVP, and among the top-five goal scorers for BSM’s girls’ hockey. She lists playing in the MSHSL State Tournament at the US Bank Stadium as one of her favorite sports memories. However, that trip to the State Tournament was not her only experience at that level. Last season, her lacrosse team earned 4th place in the State Tournament held in Stillwater.

Yet, her accomplishments were not limited to athletics. A member of the National Honor Society and the National Language Honor Society, Mary was an outstanding student-athlete. She was also a Link Crew member and part of the Red Knight Volunteer Corps. Mary will head across town to study and play hockey in St. Paul, at the University of St. Thomas in the fall.

Brady Yakesh was named the winner of the Al Blasing Award, an honor given to the senior male athlete who “best exemplifies the ideals of a Red Knight.” The selection process mirrors that of the Athena Award with the varsity coaches of boys’ sports making the decision.

Even a 2nd place medal couldn’t spoil the fun of a 3-hour rain delay and an ice cream adventure with his best friend Jonny Woodford ’21 (last year’s Al Blasing winner).

The Athena Award is given annually to the top female athlete in the class. The winner is chosen from nominees submitted by the varsity coaches of all girls’ sports. Mary excelled in soccer, hockey, and lacrosse, earning 11 varsity letters while at BSM. Her commitment as a three-sport athlete is somewhat of a rarity in high school these days.

The hockey team’s best defenseman and assist leader, Brady had several all-conference awards. This winter, he was named to the Star Tribune All-Metro team and the All-State Second Team. Dan Bowler by Brooke Stanley ‘16 Dan Bowler retired from teaching in January 2022 at the end of the first semester. On Saturday, May 21, 2022, he passed away leaving behind many to cherish his memory. May he rest in Christ’s love. Mr. Bowler was so much more than a math teacher. He was a dedicated mentor, coach, and friend to his students during his tenure at BSM. He brought energy and passion to his students every day — especially his Mathletes, with the math pun shirts and donuts. He encouraged leadership, built confidence, and wrote countless recommendation letters for his students for their continued growth. As a friend, students could always count on Mr. Bowler to recite the results from all the athletic co-curriculars and talk shop about numerous sports. While he was not known for easy math courses, he was known for having a door always open, being the score keeper at basketball games, and being able to explain the meaning of a derivative countless times for over three decades. One of the more infamous Mr. Bowler memories for those lucky enough to have him as a teacher was the end-of-year calculus scavenger hunt. There aren’t many teachers who can get students running around for hours on a quest to continue finding more calculus problems to solve. Mr. Bowler worked tirelessly to instill confidence in his students, in their math abilities, and also outside of the classroom and BSM. He encouraged questions, learning, and growth, and if a student was willing to put in the work, he would support them in achieving their goals.

You know that person who does everything perfectly and makes it seem easy? The one you want to be when you grow up? That’s Kathy Hawkinson.

A positive presence in academics and athletics, Dave Herbst spent 14 years guiding Red Knights in the classroom with noteworthy stints as a hockey coach and golf coach.

Kathy and Scott Hawkinson first came to BSM as parents when their daughters Katie ‘05, followed by Ellie ‘07 and Martha ‘10, enrolled in the junior high. In January of 2001, Kathy began work as the junior high administrative assistant, a job which grew in its demands over the years. She quickly became the face of the junior high. Parents stayed to chat when they came to the office, teachers trusted and respected her, and more than once a student rushing in for assistance called her “Mom.” Kathy has many enviable qualities. She is kind, patient, responsible, organized, and competent. She is equally adept at multitasking office demands as at wielding a wastebasket to rescue sick kids or have them spit out their gum. She is a dynamite proofreader and flawless writer. She became a whiz at corralling teachers to sign awards and submit grades on time and was even able to forgive her boss for spilling coffee on those meticulously prepared awards. When the Hawkinson family lost Scott to cancer in 2014, Kathy’s steady grace and strength were unparalleled in the face of such great sadness. Dave Platt recalls how she knew all the students by name and worked hard for them every day. He remembers her stories of the lake, especially of the eagle that built its nest right over the cabin, and her mostly unsuccessful efforts to convince us that kombucha not only is good for you but also tastes good. The BSM Junior High is blessed to have had Kathy Hawkinson as our administrative assistant extraordinaire, and we wish her well in retirement.

Dave’s mission in the classroom was to help students build the academic skills necessary for success. His patience and good communication skills enabled him to establish strong relationships with his students and move them forward on their educational journeys. A talented hockey player himself with roots on The Range and success as a Badger, Dave coached some of the most accomplished BSM girls’ hockey teams. His 2014 team was the State Runner-Up and included a future Olympic gold medalist. His love for sports moved to the links in the spring. Coaching the Red Knight golf team enabled him to share that passion. Dave’s ready smile, willingness to help, and positive encouragement will definitely be missed by students and athletes alike. Enjoy your retirement Dave!

Lisa Lenhart-Murphy ‘86 by Becca Meagher Lisa Lenhart-Murphy has been a vital member of the Benilde-St. Margaret’s community for 23 years. Not only has she created programming that truly enhances the student experience, she has also worked to create a just and fair working environment. She exemplifies what Frederick Buechner said when he talked about vocation, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

Lasting Impact Lisa is a graduate of Benilde-St. Margaret’s and the granddaughter of a St. Margaret’s Academy alum. She is married to a fellow Red Knight and is the daughter-in-law of a St. Margaret’s alum. She is also the mother to two fine young men, the youngest of whom will graduate from BSM about 100 years after his grandmothers did. This should instill hope that the legacy of Lisa Lenhart-Murphy and her family will continue to be felt in the hallways of BenildeSt. Margaret’s beyond her departure. Lisa has created many programs at BSM that have become integral to who we are as a school community. These programs will live long after her departure because of her thoughtful planning and her ability to keep in mind what is best for our students. Red Knight Volunteer Corps, Common Basket, Little Knights, and our service learning curriculum are her most notable contributions. She also dedicated much of her time over the last few years to our Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives. Truly dedicated to the mission of the school, Lisa and her passion for Benilde-St. Margaret’s will be missed. The entire community offers Lisa best wishes in her retirement!

Paul Keefe ‘75 by Eric Wilson ‘17 In What is Success?, Ralph Waldo Emerson defines success in meaningful, non-monetary terms. He reminds us “to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – this is to have succeeded.” When I learned Mr. Keefe was retiring, I thought about what a positive impact he has made on my life – and so many lives – in the band room, on the stage, and in the gym. I registered for

band in 8th grade, uncertain my saxophone would be good enough and skeptical I would pursue band when co-curriculars would compete with scheduling. But my time with Mr. Keefe was some of the best. A skilled musician, he was also a teacher and parent who understood kids. Afterall, he was a father of four Red Knights: Erin ‘01, Robert ‘05, Megan ’13, and Matthew ‘16. Always smiling – and very aware of what we were up to – he created a welcoming environment while maintaining high musical standards. He empowered and encouraged us to develop our musical talent without fear of retribution when some more difficult-to-reach notes were not quite hit. I joined band because the school required me to, but stayed on, practicing daily (even before school with the jazz band) because of Mr. Keefe. In Emerson’s words, he taught us “to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one’s self.” Congratulations on an accomplished career, Mr. Keefe. I hope you enjoy your next venture, that your alpacas enjoy more time with you, and you know that you truly succeeded at BSM.

Tom Klein by Ken Pauly Benilde-St. Margaret’s School will serve as the last stop for Tom Klein as he recently announced his retirement from a high school teaching career that spans nearly four decades. Tom “TK” Klein taught the last five years in BSM’s social studies department. TK will also bid a fond farewell to the boys’ hockey program where he was an assistant coach for 18 seasons. TK brought to his classroom a depth of knowledge in history, a quirky sense of humor, and a deep commitment to his Christian faith. His ability to integrate the Lordship of Christ within the context of his teaching served as a model for those around him. TK served in multiple capacities with the boys’ hockey program, and it was evident that Tom’s only desire was to serve at BSM. He was the heart and soul of much of what we do within our team. He’ll be missed. Best wishes in your retirement, TK!

Sister Jeanne Marie Vanderlinde by Ken Pauly Sister Jeanne Marie Vanderlinde came to Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in 1985, and for 37 years, she has been a pillar of BSM’s social studies department. While most of her career was spent teaching social studies, Sister Jeanne also served as a dean, a judge for BSM’s debate team, a mock trial advisor, and a teacher in the junior high theology department. BSM has been her calling, passion, and labor of love. Over the years, students have called her “Attila the Nun” and “The Un-Nun.” Both were always said affectionately. The nicknames reflect how tough and challenging she could be in the classroom while inspiring her students by demanding their very best and setting high standards. Sister Jeanne’s students worked hard, and they knew that they were better prepared for their future because of it. Her outgoing personality and quick wit was a joy to be near. Long time friend and retired BSM English teacher Tom Backen stated, “Jeanne Marie could find humor in any situation, and all who know her have been blessed by her craziness.” Her colleagues respected her commitment to teaching and enjoyed her multi-faceted personality. There is a belief that we are all replaceable. Sister Jeanne is proof that the sentiment could not be further from the truth. Sister Jeanne was successfully able to combine a deep knowledge of history and teaching along with her profound relationship with God. Her devotion served as a model for the entire BSM community as she assisted her junior high students with faith formation, regularly led faculty and staff prayer services, and prayed for our BSM staff at morning devotionals. The Nun is irreplaceable. Sister Jeanne’s retirement from BSM will be felt deeply. While the void will be nearly impossible to fill, her contributions to the Benilde-St. Margaret’s community will long endure.

BSM’s Parents’ Choice Award The enthusiasm Mr. Groess has for his roles as a math teacher and girls’ ultimate frisbee coach makes him a favorite among students and parents alike. His teaching style and encouragement inspires Red Knights to be their best in their own unique ways. Leadership, confidence, and positivity are attributes Mr. Groess exemplifies and instills in those around him, making him a special presence at BSM. A current parent shared, “Mr. Groess has made a lasting impact on every member of our family. He loves what he does, and it most genuinely shows.”

Main Office Receptionist Kathleen Huyck is the first face most Red Knights meet when they step foot on BSM’s campus. Her positive aura and warm nature provide a sense of welcome into the community for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Colleagues describe her as “disarming, friendly, and joyful on a daily basis. [She is] always brightening my day, and I know this person does the same for many others.” Her ability to build relationships and communicate across departments makes her the administrative glue that helps to keep BSM together. “It’s a great day to be a Red Knight!” is Mr. Porisch’s catchphrase, one that demonstrates his commitment to his students and their experience at BSM. An overall great science teacher, person, and coach, Mr. Porisch is known for his love and passion for the outdoors which he incorporates into his ecology lessons. Mr. Porsich has a knack for engaging students in class while also making an effort to acknowledge Red Knights throughout the school with a smile and hello in the hallway or at sporting events. He is a true asset to the BSM community!

Mr. Werdon goes above and beyond in his role as a vocal music teacher. He can be found conducting the Red Knotes a cappella group, spearheading BSM’s environmental club, and contributing to liturgy plans and theater performances. He willingly works with students before and after school to help them in many aspects of life and truly cares about their well-being. Engaging and enthusiastic within the classroom, Mr. Werdon is known to pitch in whenever he can offer his talents outside of the classroom. His dedication to this community truly makes BSM a better place.

Website Redesign Enhances Community Communication

The BSM marketing and communications team is pleased to announce the launch of an expanded and enhanced website for our school community to be implemented for the 2022-2023 school year. The new site provides families, faculty and staff, alumni, and students with a more engaging source of information and resources. “Life is busy for everyone these days, so the new BSM website is designed to provide efficient access to the resources students and their families need,” said David Lucs, director of marketing and communications. A key feature of the new site includes dedicated hub landing pages for BSM constituencies. “Parents, alumni, faculty & staff, and even students have their own hub to see the latest BSM news and information, along with quick links to reunions, community events, parent association opportunities, Schoology, and other resources,” Lucs explained. The hub for each group can be accessed from the top right of the BSM website.

Boys’ Baseball The boys’ baseball team won their first ever State Championship Title at Target Field on June 17.

Easter Mass BSM welcomed Archbishop Bernard Hebda to celebrate Mass with the Red Knights on April 27.

Boys’ & Girls’ Golf Jimmy Mendel ‘23, Charlie Moen ‘24, and Carter Callan ‘25 represented boys’ golf, and Clara Halverson ‘22 and Emma Hoen ‘22 represented girls’ golf at their respective MSHSL Class AAA State Golf Tournaments.

Boys’ Lacrosse The boys’ lacrosse team won their second consecutive MSHSL State Championship Title on June 18 to finish a perfect 19-0 season.

Knight Errant The Knight Errant, BSM’s student news publication, earned a Scholastic Silver Hybrid News Crown Award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an award presented to the top student publications from across the country.

Girls’ Track & Field Vivienne Larson ‘23 represented BSM at the Class AA State Track and Field Meet in both the 1600m and 3200m races. 18

Theater The senior high drama department presented Disney’s Freaky Friday: A New Musical in the Hamburge Theater, April 28-May 1 and was awarded an Outstanding performance by the Hennepin Theatre Trust, for which they presented a medley from the show on June 13 at the historic State Theatre in Minneapolis.

Girls’ Lacrosse The girls’ lacrosse team took third place at the MSHSL State Tournament on June 18 to cap off an incredible season.

Girls’ Softball The girls’ softball team wrapped up a great season with a section championship title and trip to the State Tournament.

Girls’ Basketball BSM girls’ basketball capped off an impressive season with a 23-8 record that included a trip to the MSHSL State Tournament.

Military Signing Aiden Wahlstrom ‘22 and Brady Wine ‘22 were both appointed to the United States Naval Academy at BSM’s Military Signing Ceremony on May 20.

Junior High Awards Eleanor Porisch ‘26 and Riley Shannon ‘26 received the BSM junior high Red Knight Achiever Award for their demonstration of leadership within their class and their embodiment of what it truly means to be a Red Knight.

Most recently, he served as coordinator of Maryknoll’s China Educators and Formation Project. That program, started in 1991, brought Chinese patients and Sisters to the United States to earn advanced degrees at Catholic universities. Since the program began, over 150 Chinese Church leaders have earned degrees.

Nicole Kivo married Jordan Nady on Sept. 11, 2021, at Madden’s Resort. The maids of honor included classmates Kellie Hartmann Gerhauser, Natalie Guggenberger, and Kelsey Daley Smitt. Bridget Kelly Mord and Sydney Speltz enjoyed catching up and visiting with senior Red Knights at the Alumni/Senior Breakfast on May 3. Bridget is an account supervisor at Carmichael Lynch for CPG Brands, and Sydney is a financial reporting manager at Northern Oil and Gas. They both live in the Twin Cities area.

Greg and Maddy Moore Zeman welcomed Harper Sloane into the world on May 11.

Mary and Roger Bertossi are pleased to announce the birth of Graham Ellingsen on April 20. Graham’s big brother Yale is 4 years old. Mary is a pediatric endocrinology nurse practitioner, and Roger is a 5th grade teacher. The Bertossi family lives in Smyrna, Georgia.

Brian Graupner and wife Julia welcomed baby Ella Victoria on Feb. 2.

Matt Qualen and Amanda Johnson were married on June 26, 2021, in Cushing, Minnesota.

2014

Kasi Petersen is the assistant women’s hockey coach at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona. McKenzie Swenson is the tournament operations coordinator for the PGA Tour and director of logistics for Augusta Corporate Events, LLC.

2015

Ben Newhouse graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Masters of Science. He is headed to Brunico, Italy to play hockey this fall with HC Pustertal.

2016

The Alumni/Senior Breakfast reunited classmates Brooke Stanley, Maddie Etienne, and Sisay Shannon-Tamrat. Brooke (graduate of Rochester Institute for Technology) works as a mechanical engineer to develop a treatment for prostate cancer at Francis Medical. Maddie (graduate of St. Olaf College) works at Girl Scouts River Valleys as a community organizer to develop outreach plans and build stronger relationships with schools, families, and volunteers. Sisay (graduate of Brandeis University) provides public services for clients through her work with Community Mediation and Restorative Services while attending graduate school at the University of Minnesota for Human Rights.

2017

Annie Griebie won the Minnesota Psychological Association’s 2021 Donald G. Paterson Undergraduate Award in Psychology. Griebie is the third CSB student to win the award in the 60-year history of this honor, bestowed to “the outstanding college senior planning a career in psychology.”

will be spending the summer on a fishing boat off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska. With a degree in psychology and a minor in Spanish, Sami will move on to Regis University in Denver to pursue her doctorate in physical therapy. Clyde earned an economics degree from the Tippy School of Business.

Jerome Newhouse graduated magna cum laude from St. John’s University. He earned a B.A. with a double major in computer science and finance. He is pictured with Ben ‘15 and parents Margrette and John Newhouse.

Matthew Kocourek and Bridget Yazvec completed 16 years of Catholic education together when they celebrated their graduation from Creighton University in May. Matthew graduated from the Heider College of Business with a degree in financial analysis and consumer analytics. He will be working at City Ventures in Omaha as a financial analyst. Bridget graduated from the College of Nursing and will be working as a registered nurse in the medicalsurgical unit at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank. Michael Hunter graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in accounting, a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance, and a minor in communications. He will be working for PwC in Cincinnati.

Henry Wolfe, Sami Tarnowski, and Clyde Sellke graduated from the University of Iowa. Henry earned a degree in enterprise leadership with a minor in rhetoric and persuasion. He
