Strength in Community

CROWN & SHIELD Spring 2022 | Volume 48, Number 2

President's Letter Dear BSM Families and Friends, Each year, families from across the Twin Cities attend open houses at Benilde-St. Margaret’s as they consider the next step in their child’s education. While I have the opportunity to regularly see our Red Knights creating their paths, it is also rewarding to meet new families who are exploring the BSM experience for their children. One of the concepts I always highlight is the value of becoming part of our Red Knight community, creating relationships that endure over lifetimes. My own experience as a faculty member, coach, adviser, dean, principal, and president have reinforced my appreciation for the special nature of this Catholic educational community. This issue of the Crown and Shield brings the lasting effects of community at BSM to life. A Catholic, college preparatory school, grades 7-12 2501 Highway 100 S. We talk about community constantly at BSM - why is it important? There is a wonderful power embedded in the relationships among Red Knights. Rooted in faith, the shared identities forged in the classrooms, on the fields, during performances, and at dances bring our students and families together. These are powerful connections, shaping meaningful experiences, aligning expectations, and molding lives in influential ways – sometimes at the most unexpected times. These networks have and will impact the world firmly rooted in our shared identity as members of the BSM community. The alumni who grace the cover of this edition of the Crown and Shield demonstrate the values at the core of the BSM community. They are priests, coaches, volunteers, educators, parents, and business leaders bringing to life the values Benilde-St. Margaret’s holds dear. They are answering God’s call based on their own unique gifts building upon the foundation established during their journey as students here. As you can see, those experiences have helped them shape the world as people of integrity and as Red Knights. The strength of our BSM community is evident time and again as I see how our alumni collectively live their lives, and our students follow in their footsteps in their own unique ways. I am constantly grateful to the faculty, staff, parents, alumni, students, and friends who build this community. The impact of being part of the Red Knight community is immeasurable. May the Spirit of Easter fill your families with hope, joy, and peace this season.

ALUMNI

Stay Connected with BSM

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight – it’s the rally cry of the Benilde-St. Margaret’s community. Though hardly a unique slogan for a school, the statement holds a deeper meaning for our students and alumni, making the phrase distinctive and personal to the BSM community. It is what enables a graduate from the 1960s to relate with one from the 2000s. It is what ties a new 7th grader to the towering senior they pass in the hallway.

| Spring 2022

A shared experience, a sense of identity, a lifelong connection. When combining the legacy of St. Margaret’s Academy with that of Benilde High School and Benilde-St. Margaret’s School, our community is a network and support system spanning decades.

The strength in the BSM community comes from the relationships formed between students, teachers, coaches, parents, mentors, alumni, and friends of BSM that extend beyond the walls of a building. What makes our community truly special is the intersection of these roles.

been teaching French in the junior and senior high since 2007. “BSM is my home away from home,” Hyde said, “I can honestly say that I love coming to ‘work’ everyday!” After spending a significant duration of time at school as both a student and now as a teacher, she has experienced firsthand the progression of BSM becoming what it is today. “The physical campus has changed a lot since the 1980s, but the Red Knight spirit is the same,” Hyde remarked.

Joe Peterson ’95, Alyssa Bajwa Pankratz ’95, and Johnny Grant ’95 served as the Masters and Mistress of Ceremonies at the 1994 Homecoming Coronation.

For Johnny Grant ‘95, BSM alumnus and a new current parent, staying connected to the community has been important for many reasons. “BSM gave me a strong foundation to build on and a network of lifelong friends who have been incredibly supportive personally and professionally over the years.” Grant has played a valued role in this network by attending the end-ofyear Senior Breakfast event where graduating seniors share their college decisions and gain insight from alumni as they prepare to take their next step in life. Now, Grant is enjoying another aspect of the community when attending his daughter’s soccer and basketball games and getting to know other current student families.

Current parent Mary Tompkins ‘89 shared similar sentiments about the enhancements made at BSM. “The school has been transformed into a major campus now. I love the buzz of activity when I walk through the doors at BSM.” It was this energy that drew Tompkins to volunteer in the Spirit Shop, making it possible for her to interact with current students and get to know other community members at the same Amy Jo Reinhart Hyde ‘89 time. Additionally, (far right) celebrated her the variety of graduation with friends Courtney Burns ‘89, Lori Slicker Sharp, co-curriculars for Anne Hingeley Meier ‘89, and Mollie Sieve Olsen ‘89.

Alumna Amy Jo Reinhart Hyde ‘89 is one of those current families. A parent of two Red Knights, Hyde has

students impacted her decision to enroll her own children at BSM. “Everyone has an opportunity to join a club or to participate in after-school activities. It gives the students a real sense of community and belonging not only with students in their own class but other grades as well,” Tompkins said.

Mary Tompkins ‘89 posed for a graduation photo with her friend Jahnelle Harrigan Reed ‘89.

For alumna Betsy Van Cleve Stiegler ‘06, returning to BSM as a coach and staff member has been her way of giving back to the school. Sports and activities made her student experience a positive one as she balanced soccer, student council, and Red Knight Volunteer Corps to name a few. As student manager of the girls’ basketball team in 2006, sprinting across the Target Center floor to celebrate the team’s state championship win remains one of her favorite memories. Van Cleve shared that it was through these co-curriculars that she learned hard work, accountability, and goal setting. “Great coaches and mentors make all of the difference,” Van Cleve said, “My hope is that by giving my time back to Red Knights today, they will in turn inspire student-athletes and club participants when they are adults down the road.”

Betsy Van Cleve Stiegler ‘06 was a member of the homecoming court her senior year.

Father Tim Wozniak ‘66, Benilde High School alumnus, has served as BSM’s chaplain since 2008. His own connection to the school’s heritage has been a true blessing when sharing the Gospel message with Red Knights during Mass and other events on campus. From anecdotes about his Red Knight letterman’s jacket to remaining friends with his football teammates, to now chatting with his niece, a current BSM student, Father Tim’s 6

experience is like many others in the BSM community. And he is impressed with how the school has advanced while staying true to its mission. “BSM has gone from an all-male school taught by the Christian Brothers when I was attending, to a co-ed school with diversity in the student body and in the faculty. What has remained the Fr. Tim Wozniak ‘66, same is a faith-based BSM chaplain, was a very school with prayer involved Red Knight as part of each day,” in the 60s. noted Father Tim. Belonging to a faith-filled community is meaningful for alumni and current families alike. “Red Knights have been part of so many of the milestones in my life,” said John Vonhof ‘86, “From high school to college, grad school, work, marriage, raising kids, sports, vacations, and even at the end of life at funerals. Literally the whole cycle of life.” Vonhof is a current parent and has served in a variety of roles on BSM’s Board of Directors through the years. As an active alumni, he has prioritized involvement through multiple avenues at BSM. From organizing and participating in class reunions to attending plays, science events, and state tournament

games, Vonhof has stayed connected with classmates and the BSM community at large. The classes of 1985, 1986, and 1987 are so tightly connected, that for Vonhof, their grad years have blended together. “I learned a lot of important lessons from my days at BSM,” Vonhof reflected, adding, “One in particular being the importance of sharing your gifts – time, treasure, and talent.” It is this culture of giving back which inspires and motivates our community forward. Alumni are the backbone of the BSM community – blazing a trail for future Red Knights, serving as inspiration and mentors, and helping them succeed as previous generations did for them. Red Knights are part of a strong tradition that carries the spirit and dreams of those who came before and welcomes the next generation into the family. These relationships and that connection make the BSM community something truly special.

Classmates from 1986 celebrated at an end-of-year event: Armando Mojica, Mark Scherer, Steve Pohlen, Tom Tompkins, John Vonhof, Joe Beck, and Matt Keeler.

BSM

Hall of

HONOR The Hall of Honor publicly honors our BSM heritage, salutes the dedication and service of volunteers, and recognizes the professional longevity of employees. Our 2022 honorees have made a significant contribution to the lives of many in the Benilde-St. Margaret’s and greater community.

Red Knight Leadership Award Tom and Stephanie Drees For the past decade, Tom and Stephanie Drees have been constants at BSM as highly involved parents. Derek ’17 and Dylan ’19 were heavily involved in athletics at BSM, and current senior Sydney ’22 has carried on that commitment. Being a parent in a highly competitive BSM athletic program is one thing, being a parent of a team captain brings on another level of responsibility. Tom and Stephanie served as the parents of a captain for boys’ basketball and baseball several times and also for girls’ soccer. Furthermore, Tom found time to coach baseball, imparting some of his major league expertise to Red Knights, and he served as the game announcer. In addition to athletic involvement, Stephanie served as the co-chair of the Benilde-St. Margaret’s gala, along with Wendy Jacobsen-Gretsch, for three years straight.

The chair and their spouse are heavily involved in event planning, recruitment, securing auction items, and providing financial support. There has never been a job too big or too small for Tom and Stephanie. Stephanie has been an incredible powerhouse, leading some of the most successful galas in our school’s history. Stephanie's involvement ensures the popular Red Knight duffel bags are available and personalized for students. Tom and Stephanie Drees have been selfless leaders in the BSM community for many years. They have been consummate cheerleaders, active volunteers, school ambassadors, parent partners, event planners, and financial supporters in ways that have enriched the experience for students and parents. The impact of their leadership will carry on beyond Sydney’s graduation this spring. Thank you, Tom and Stephanie!

Mark and Heather Scherer Mark ’86 and Heather Scherer have been recognizable leaders in the school since the mid-2000s as parents. As an alumnus, Mark was always engaged at BSM, and their four children – Jackie ’13, Andrew ’16, Frannie ’19, and Claudia ’21 - drew them further into Red Knight life as parents. Throughout their experiences, they always seem to figure out ways to not only help, but lead. For many years, Heather was a driving force in the Spirit Shop, keeping fresh ideas, products, and marketing moving forward in a tireless way. She was also an incredible dance team supporter, doing everything with unbeatable spirit to support the dancers and connect the parents. As a dance captain’s mother, she helped keep the dance families together. Mark has always focused on ways to help BSM move forward. An engaged alumnus, he understands the

8

| Spring 2022

good that comes with a BSM education. Mark has been involved philanthropically at BSM for just under 30 years, most of that time with Heather by his side. He continues to be a leader among the Class of 1986 by generating financial support among his classmates and friends to shape the current students’ experience. Mark served on the board of directors for six years leading the school during an important time of strategic planning, leadership changes, and capital campaigns. He always brought an honest, thoughtful perspective connected deeply to the history of this school. Mark and Heather’s positive footprints on the path of Benilde-St. Margaret’s have been in the works since the 1980s, through many ups and downs. They have been leaders among BSM alumni, parents, students; among co-curricular programs, philanthropic efforts, and school governance. Their legacy at Benilde-St. Margaret’s uniquely connects the school’s history with its brilliant future, leaving a lasting impact on BSM students. Thank you, Mark and Heather!

Shay and Brenda Wyley Shay and Brenda Wyley have been a part of the BSM community for nearly two decades. The four Wyley children - Sean ’06, Oisin ’09, Michelle ’18, and Ronan ’21 - were busy Red Knights, which meant Shay and Brenda were as well. Since the beginning, Brenda has always selflessly offered to help with just about anything around school whether it is participating in an open house, providing an alternate perspective on a topic, congratulating a faculty member, or putting together a celebration. She was also a mainstay in the Spirit Shop. Shay has had one of the most unique experiences as a parent at BSM. Soon after the Wyleys became Red Knights, Shay joined a committee that advised

the school’s board of directors. A short time later, Shay became a member of the board of directors during times that required great governance and leadership. He was intimately involved in financial affairs, capital campaigns, strategic planning, and leadership transitions. What makes the story even more interesting, a few weeks after Shay retired from General Mills, he was tapped to serve as BSM’s interim president in 2016-2017. His retirement plans had to be put on hold. Following his interim experience, he became the chair of the BSM board of directors. Together, Shay and Brenda, have been a beacon of positivity at BSM for close to 20 years. They have become trusted confidantes. Their impact in terms of philanthropic support, school engagement, and leadership into the future has played a crucial role in the Benilde-St. Margaret’s story. Thank you, Shay and Brenda!

Distinguished Alumni Award Michael Allen Michael Allen ’99 had a charismatic personality that drew others to him and made him a popular and well-liked classmate at BSM. After his Red Knight graduation, Michael left for Denver, Colorado, to attend Regis University, a Jesuit school. Armed with a background in business administration, Michael began working in social services by helping local homeless families get an education, food, stable housing, and a bed in which to sleep. Through his work, he recognized that many children in transitional living situations did not have a bed or separate sleeping space. They often slept on floors, air mattresses, or a couch. Many children also had to share the space with a parent or sibling. For several years, Michael operated Boom Boom’s Beds, a charitable organization named in honor of his dad, Benilde High School alum Mike Allen ‘66, who was affectionately known by his grandchildren as “Boom Boom.”

Tricia Huntley Tricia Huntley ‘89 proved from a young age she had style, grace, and leadership abilities. She was nominated to the Homecoming court and served two years as captain of the Knightettes dance team. She was also named captain of the track team and was a state participant in the 100m hurdles. After graduating from BSM, she earned a bachelor’s degree in photography and art history from Arizona State University. She then took her talent and curiosity to Washington D.C. for graduate school at George Washington University. With career aspirations in interior design, she earned a Master’s Degree and set out to learn as much as possible from professionals in the fast-paced D.C. market. Tricia worked for ten years in the hospitality industry and for a private

In 2014, Michael decided to quit his full-time job and jump into the nonprofit world. He founded the organization My Very Own Bed to continue doing the work that Boom Boom’s Beds had started. The organization had one goal in mind: provide new beds for children whose families had just secured stable housing. To date, My Very Own Bed has delivered 4,000 beds and Dream Kit linen sets to children in the Twin Cities. The increased need for children is real, and Michael and his dream team hope to deliver 1,400 beds and linens to children in 2022. One thing is very clear, Michael Allen exemplifies the true spirit of BSM and the Jesuit Order as he carries out God’s work with a kind heart, an open mind, and a strong purpose. The Jesuit educational motto encourages students to think beyond themselves and work toward a more just world. By rising above expectations and striving for “more,” Michael truly serves as a lasting part of something greater than himself. Congratulations Michael!

design firm. Her experience early in her career set the stage for understanding how to carefully plan and execute large-scale interior design projects in an extremely dynamic environment. In 2006, she launched Huntley & Co. Interior Design in Washington D.C., and for the past 15 years, Huntley & Co. has flourished. Tricia’s expertise has landed her design projects in ten states and four countries. Her custom lighting designs are carried by Urban Electric Co. and Ironware International. One product, appropriately named the Huntley, is a bestseller. Over the years, Tricia’s work has received much recognition including DC Magazine’s “Best of the City Award,” Washington Design Center’s “Ones to Watch,” Home & Design “Designer’s Choice Award,” and Luxe Magazine’s “Gold List Award Winner.” Congratulations Tricia!

Distinguished Alumni Award (continued) council, math league, and Eucharistic ministry. However, it was his love for drama that cast him in leading roles in many BSM productions which further deepened his interest in performing, singing, and writing music. Born into a house full of actors – mom Merilee, brother Jake ’03, sister Laura ’02, and brother Zach ’09 – Michael and his family were all involved in BSM productions during their time as Red Knights. Over the years, Michael has stayed engaged with the BSM drama department, finding ways to connect with students through personal visits and Skype calls to inspire and lead the next generation of actors. The drama department has also performed several musicals that Michael has written.

Michael Mahler Michael Mahler ’00 excelled in the drama department and exemplified the true Red Knight experience during his time at BSM as a member of many clubs and activities including student

During his high school years, Michael began publishing liturgical songs for Catholic churches. You might even recognize songs like “Give Us Your Peace” or “Let Your Light” which are published in Catholic missals today and available all over the world.

After his time as a Red Knight, he headed for Chicago where he attended Northwestern University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Theater. During college, he wrote nearly 50 songs for Northwestern’s annual Waa-Mu Show. As his career progressed, Michael’s list of accomplishments has grown exponentially. He has collaborated on lyrics and writing for many movies, musicals, and digital productions including; “An American Tail,” “Night at the Museum,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “My Little Pony: A New Generation,” “Lego Store: the Musical,” and recently “The Monster,” which was commissioned and developed at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and named winner of the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre. Michael’s talents have earned him prestigious honors as an award-winning actor, musician, composer, and lyricist recognized as an important emerging voice in American musical theater today. Congratulations Michael!

Volunteer Service Award Linda Bauer Linda Bauer stepped into the Spirit Shop when her daughter Grace ’21 was a freshman. She arrived with accounting expertise at the perfect time. The execution of Spirit Shop accounting duties is challenging enough in “normal” times. COVID times changed that exponentially. Over 50 volunteers keep the Spirit Shop in operation, and many of them have very specific duties. Linda’s position involved managing all of the financial matters and establishing procedures for daily activity. With the advent of COVID-19, Linda was the only Spirit Shop volunteer able to be in the building during the 2020-2021 school year. That resulted

Dan Cooley Dan Cooley ’96 was a very involved Red Knight as a student, and that involvement continued after graduation. As a college student and football manager, he enhanced alumni events at Notre Dame, and he was helpful with alumni events hosted in Chicago post-graduation. His serious involvement at BSM began when he returned to the Twin Cities and joined the BSM Board of Directors in 2010. Known for his logical thinking and analytical expertise, he often played the valuable role of devil’s advocate.

10

| Spring 2022

in her assuming most other duties during the school year and throughout the summer. She continued her accounting duties and also took orders, delivered items, managed the inventory, and much more. Additionally, Linda played a key role in the annual BSM auction, specifically on the day of the event. Maps and diagrams of the gala items made set-up with efficient and appealing displays much easier for volunteer activity. She also was involved in planning and acquisitions. Thankfully, Linda stayed involved after Grace’s graduation and was ready to help with the auction and guide the new financial volunteer in the Spirit Shop. Thank you, Linda!

As a board member, he served on the nominating committee. Dan remained on that committee after completing his board tenure and only last year managed to “retire” from that duty. His contributions to that group were invaluable. He orchestrated the creation and use of appropriate systems for evaluating prospective board members. Aside from all official volunteer duties, Dan has consistently mobilized his class to contribute to their alma mater. He has also generously supported the annual auction, generating valuable income for the school. BSM is grateful that this class president for the Class of 1996 has continued to exercise his leadership skills. Thank you, Dan!

Joe Peterson Joe Peterson found his first volunteer opportunities through the activities of his son Nick ’20. Nick was a talented student athlete with strong leadership abilities, and that presented leadership opportunities for Joe as well. As the head of the football booster club, Joe guided the parents in producing a media guide while working with coaches, vendors, and parents on many other topics. In the winter, Nick captained the basketball team. That situation presented another set of responsibilities and challenges. Joe’s demeanor was perfect to keep everyone calm and on track.

He was a great listener and willing sounding board. He handled all groups with grace. After Nick’s graduation, Joe became a valuable and willing resource for the athletic department. With coaching experience of his own and years of experience with Nick’s coaches, he brought a new and different perspective to interviewing and evaluating candidates vying for coaching positions at BSM. It does take a village to accomplish so many things, and Joe was a very valuable contributor as part of the BSM village. Thank you, Joe!

Jenifer Williams Jenifer Williams got her volunteer start with the BSM girls’ swimming and diving team. Both Williams girls, Morgan ’18 and Taylor ’21, were swimmers. Swim meets are run by parent volunteers, and the activity in the “control room” is complicated and challenging. For years, Jen was a big part of that operation which required expertise, flexibility, and patience. Being a captain’s parent, twice, presented additional opportunities, and helping with team apparel was high on the list of duties. Conveniently, Jen was a Spirit Shop volunteer and one of her responsibilities was working with

Twenty-Year Club INDUCTEES

teams and activities on special orders. In that role, she worked with students, coaches, and parents. In all cases, she diligently guarded BSM brand standards and school colors. As BSM’s COVID-19 coordinator during the 2020-2021 school year, Jen spent many additional hours on the job outside of work. She was devoted to helping anyone who wanted protection to get it in a timely manner. Jen’s ability to approach every assignment, project, or mission with heart and unfaltering determination has been a wonderful gift to BSM. Thank you, Jen!

The Twenty-Year club is a proud and loyal group of Red Knight faculty and staff members. There were three new inductees honored in 2022. Last year’s inductees were also celebrated at the 2022 Hall of Honor event.

Reunions

Spring 202 2

If your graduation year ends in a 2 or a 7, 2022 is your reunion year.

2or7

BSM is partnering with classes celebrating their 5-year, 25-year, and 50-year anniversaries. If you are in the Class of 2017, Class of 1997, or Class of 1972 (SMA and Benilde) and would like to be on a reunion committee, please contact Rachel Kuzma Olson ’93 at rkuzmaolson@BSMschool.org to help plan an event for your class this year. 2022 BSM Day of Giving Goal

500,000

$

FROM OVER 1,000 DONORS! Generous donors are stepping up to inspire the community to be “in” for BSM’s Day of Giving by providing challenge match funds to help the school achieve or exceed the $500,000 goal.

Mary Fran O’Keefe challenges alumni to honor the Class of 2022.

A meaningful match honors Mr. J’s 73rd Birthday on May 11.

Her donation will be added to the Day of Giving toal after we receive 236 (number of seniors) alumni gifts.

Several BSM alumni families will donate $100 for every gift ending in $73. Think $73, $173, $273, $573, $1,073, $10,073, etc.

Mary Fran (Miss O) has fostered a strong spirit within the BSM community during her 45 years of service. In addition to her alumni and event work, she attends more student, parent, and sporting events than anyone! Miss O has also raised money for scholarships and special programs opening doors of opportunity for Red Knights.

Mike Jeremiah (Mr. J) has modeled love and kindness for the BSM community for 47 years. Mr. J has devoted more than half his life to serving our students. He connects the community to God and teaches us to bring love to one another. Let’s come together and honor Mr. J’s remarkable service to BSM by making a birthday gift to support Benilde-St. Margaret’s on May 11.

Watch for more details on matches to encourage First Time Donors, Classes of the 70s and before, Classes of the 80s, Classes of the 90s, Classes of the 2000s, and more! Spring 2022 |
