President's Letter Dear BSM Families and Friends, Every Catholic school has their own unique personality and culture, shaped over time by the religious leaders, educators, students, coaches, families, and partners who support them. Since 1907, when the Sisters of St. Joseph opened St. Margaret’s Academy, excellence has been at the foundation of BSM’s school culture and has emerged as one of our defining principles. This edition of the Crown and Shield, featuring the biomedical science program along with the annual report, illustrates our commitment to this important value.

Over the years, Red Knights have had opportunities to learn in innovative and meaningful ways alongside talented and committed educators. The evolution of the biomedical science program where the real-world curriculum, modern technology, and recently-redesigned facilities have catapulted Red Knights into national prominence is an example of how we strive to bring excellence to life at BSM. Other examples, such as student-led trials in social studies courses, flight design optimization in mathematics, opportunities for challenging discussions with church leaders, and numerous state tournament appearances in athletics and activities, also provide an important window into how we strive to make excellence part of the everyday experience at BSM. The extraordinary dedication of our alum community is another mark of distinction. We are grateful to the outstanding St. Margaret’s Academy, Benilde, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s alums who continue to contribute and serve the school in important ways. Alums fill half of our board of directors and board committee positions. Fourteen percent of our current faculty/staff are alums. Twelve percent of the student body have alum parents. Two alums - Dr. Michael Nemanich ‘85 and Dr. Anne Ford Moore ‘81 - serve as sideline physicians at BSM football games. BSM students have benefitted from mentorships and real-world work experience provided by the alum community through our EPIC (Explore, Partner, Inspire, Connect) and RED (Research, Entrepreneurship, and Design) programs. Alums also continue to invest in BSM, representing the greatest percentage of overall donors. The examples of support are endless. An exceptional student experience couldn’t happen without partners who believe in our mission as a Catholic school. These partners – faculty and staff, alums, volunteers, benefactors – show up year after year, selflessly supporting students in whatever way they’re able. I am truly grateful for the unique talents and gifts these individuals share with Red Knights as we work to continually celebrate and refine excellence together. As Thanksgiving approaches, may we all feel the grace of God and be reminded of the many blessings that fill our lives.

New Biomed Program Pushes

Red Knights to Excel

Since Benilde-St. Margaret’s opened its doors decades ago, course offerings have continued to shift as the world evolves. One of the most recent additions is a biomedical track that was developed to boost students who are looking to pursue careers in the field of medicine after graduation.

What started as a club at BSM less than 10 years ago is now a full-blown program consisting of three courses designed to help students reimagine excellence: Biomed I, Biomed II: AP Seminar, and Biomed III: AP Research. Adding to the growth of the program was the completion of new state-of-the-art science classrooms which opened in 2019 with the completion of phase I of the Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. capital campaign. Now, students have access to science and medical equipment that allows them to engage in realworld research and experimentation — all things that give Red Knights an edge upon graduation.

Senior high teachers Mark Peterson and Jennifer Roushar have been integral in the advancement of the program. Roushar has been teaching Red Knights for 22 years and currently instructs students in Honors Biology and Biomed I. In her class, students get hands-on experience through dissections, suturing, and running experiments. “The outcome of Biomed I is for students to start thinking like doctors and understand that the human body is all tied together,” Roushar said.

Peterson’s favorite part about his role as instructor is learning alongside his students and watching them dig into their curiosities. Biomed III, which Peterson teaches, focuses on gaps in knowledge and going through the research procedure – working with the institutional review board (IRB), collaborating with experts, analyzing data, coming to a conclusion, then presenting – just as biomedical scientists would outside the walls of BSM. Aidan Traverse ’22 has made his way through Biomed I and II and is currently enrolled in Biomed III. He enjoyed carrying out the dissections on a pig brain and cat in Ms. Roushar’s class, but he also appreciated the emphasis on critical thinking and the ability to conduct his own research in Biomed II and III with Mr. Peterson. “I’d love to pursue a career in medicine, and I feel that biomed has more than prepared me for that career path. Learning how to conduct research, implement problem solving skills, and understand human anatomy will be extremely helpful when applying to, and working my way through, medical school,” Traverse shared. This has been proven by BSM’s most recent graduating class which had multiple Red Knights who completed the biomedical track and were subsequently admitted to prestigious medical programs. This fall, Sophie Coleman ‘21 joined two other BSM alums in the highly selective seven-year B.A. to M.D. program at the University of Minnesota, where she is studying human physiology. Only 10 students in the nation were selected for this program. When asked how BSM’s program helped prepare her for this important step, Sophie replied, “BSM’s biomed program helped unlock my passion for medicine. Those classes gave me opportunities to think outside of the box and explore subjects in which I had a personal interest. Not only did I gain technical skills, but I have an expanded idea of the field that will allow me to navigate my courses and future profession better. As I start my classes at the U of M, the foundational knowledge and support I received will help me along my journey to become a doctor.”

Lindsey Layton ‘22 aspires to work for the FBI, yet she has found that biomedical classes have enriched her education in terms of collaborating with colleagues and asking important questions. Whether it’s studying foundational theories, conducting new research, or being encouraged to engage with realworld issues, the biomed track at BSM allows students the opportunity to explore the field of medicine and hone critical, transferable skills. Interest in these courses continues to grow each year. More than 70 students signed up for Biomed I this fall, the largest group to date. As Red Knights continue to raise the bar and engage in the biomedical science field, BSM continues to push for educational opportunities that open doors for students to explore their passions and reach their full potential.

50 Years of Service with Golden Jubilee This summer, BSM’s faithful friend and teacher Sister Jeanne Marie Vanderlinde joyfully celebrated her golden jubilee - or 50 years - as a consecrated Benedictine sister. “We are truly blessed to have such an incredible person in our community,” said Campus Minister Mike Jeremiah. “It is an honor to celebrate alongside her as she reaches such a meaningful milestone.” 6

The 8th BSM Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on Oct. 1. The pandemic forced a one-year celebration postponement for the honorees who were selected in 2020 and enabled another honoree to be eligible for induction. The goal is to recognize those from St. Margaret’s Academy, Benilde High School, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s whose athletic accomplishments or contributions have enhanced the school’s legacy. Alumni are eligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame once ten years have passed since graduating from high school.

Athletic Hall of Fame

Honoring outstanding athletic accomplishments and contributions of athletes from St. Margaret’s Academy, Benilde High School, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s The first athletes honored were Bruce Reinhart and his daughter, Amy Jo Reinhart Hyde. They made BSM history as the first father/daughter inductees.

Bruce Reinhart 1961 The son of legendary DeLaSalle coach Dick Reinhart, Bruce came to Benilde to chart his own course. He followed his dad’s assistant coach, Mike Karbo, to the new school on the west side of town. Bruce was the quarterback of the Central Catholic Conference co-champs in 1960. An All-Conference selection his senior year, Bruce quarterbacked his team to an overall mark of 7-0-1, and the first conference title in school history. Bruce continued his football career at St. Thomas College and enjoyed a brief stint in semi-pro football in West Virginia.

Amy Jo Reinhart Hyde 1989 Amy Jo was a four-year All-Conference selection in soccer and a two-time All-State honoree. The team MVP her senior year, she served as team captain both junior and senior seasons, and her team scored the three-peat with conference championships. Amy Jo is still the assist record holder. On the track, Amy Jo was a sprinter and represented the Red Knights at the state tournament in the 100 meters. 8

Amy Jo continued with soccer and track at Grinnell College. She was Freshman Athlete of the Year and earned four AllConference awards. The team MVP in soccer and track, she also earned the soccer Senior Award.

Jeff Sweetser 1973 Jeff participated in five different sports as a Red Knight and lettered in four. He gave wrestling a try as a freshman but found basketball to be a more suitable winter endeavor. Jeff lettered in tennis as a freshman and was the only four-year letterwinner in his class. As a senior, he was the number one singles player and advanced to the state tournament. Cross county, soccer, and basketball rounded out his athletic letters. His All-Conference awards were in soccer and tennis. Jeff moved on to the University of California, San Diego, the perfect setting for continuing his sports of soccer and tennis.

Mike Hook 1991 Mike was a three-sport standout, excelling in football, hockey, and track. A true leader, he was the captain of each of those sports both his junior and senior year. He also earned All-Metro and All-State recognition for his efforts on the gridiron.

The BSM hockey team won the Missota Conference title. Mike earned All-Conference honors and was named the Best Defenseman. Twice Mike represented the Red Knights at the state track meet. His name is still on the track and field record board at BSM for the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle relays. As a senior, Mike received the Al Blasing Award as the outstanding male athlete in his class.

Ryan Dolan 1998 Ryan was the state’s leading soccer scorer with 32 goals and 22 assists, and that 32nd goal secured the first team state championship in BSM history. Ryan still holds the BSM record for most points. He was also an All-State and All-Metro selection. In the winter, Ryan’s basketball team won the conference championship, and he earned All-Conference recognition. Ryan also was named the winner of the Al Blasing Award for the Class of 1998. At the University of St. Thomas, Ryan was a four-year starter on the soccer team. Twice he was the leading scorer on the team, and he earned All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Conference honors as a Tommie.

Elsa Perushek 2007 Elsa joined with Shannon Cooney Tyllia to win 2nd place in the state tennis tournament as a sophomore. As a junior, she and Shannon won the doubles title, a first for BSM. Elsa was a member of the girls’ hockey team that won the state title in 2004 and earned 3rd place in 2007. Elsa was All-Conference in both sports for multiple years. Union College hockey was next for Elsa. She was the Rookie of the Year in 2007-2008 and earned All-Conference Academic honors in the D1 Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Nick Tourville 2010 Nick was BSM’s first state champion wrestler. The three-time captain finished his Red Knight career with a 163-17 record. He began as a 112-pound freshman and earned his state championship at 152 lbs. His state tourney path to the championship included a fall and two shutouts. The championship match was a nail biter that ended in a 3-2 decision over a wrestler from Simley. Nick earned All-American honors as a senior. Nick moved on to Boston University on a wrestling scholarship and continued his success. He was a four-year starter, team captain, and ranked in the top 25 nationally.

Trevor Yedoni 2011

Shannon definitely made her mark in BSM tennis history. A four-year letter winner and team captain, Shannon represented the Red Knights at state in both her junior and senior year. As a junior, Shannon and her doubles partner, Elsa Perushek, won the section title and were state runners-up, losing to Rochester Mayo in the finals.

Trevor literally jumped into Red Knight sports history. He earned four letters in cross country and track and field where he was a three-time MVP and three-year captain. In 2010, Trevor earned his first state championship in the high jump, clearing 6’10”. As a senior, he repeated that feat and added a 23’ long jump at the state meet to earn that championship.

As a senior, Shannon and her partner were runners-up in the section but won the doubles title. That was the first state tennis championship for BSM. Shannon continued her educational and tennis career at St. Mary’s University.

As a Minnesota Gopher, he was named Big 10 Freshman of the Year. But injury, surgery, rehab, and patience were next for Trevor. He managed all his challenges and in 2014, he was the Big 10 champion in the long jump – a great way to finish.

Class of 1971 Reunites - A class reunion was held Oct. 1-3. Classmates enjoyed weekend festivities including golf at Meadowbrook, happy hour at Park Tavern, and a 50th class reunion at the Doubletree Park Place in St. Louis Park. 1972

Dan Delmore was recently honored with a 2021 Leading with Faith award. Since 2002, the Catholic Spirit has chosen to honor men and women who practice their faith in the marketplace with an awards program called Leading with Faith. Dan was one of seven honored with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Bernard Hebda followed by a program and ice cream social outside on the Cathedral grounds. Dan is the funeral director and owner of Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapels.

Senior Class President Joe Rabatin and Vice President Ricci Graziano planned a Mass, school tour, and luncheon for their 40-year reunion. Kevin Phillips is the author of a new book, Driving While Black: A Memoir of Profiling. The book is now available on Amazon.

Mike Mahler and writing partner Alan Schmuckler wrote a song for the opening of the LEGO Flagship Store on Fifth Avenue in NYC. They turned it into an epic commercial starring Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica from Hamilton) among others. The commercial shares the story of a young girl who joins a cast of real-life Broadway stage actors, front line workers, and a collection of fan-favorite LEGO minifigures on a full-day adventure of building, creativity, and reveling in the spirit of New York City. You can see the commercial on Youtube entitled LEGO Store: The Musical.

Dannah Shinder has joined Berlanti Productions as executive vice president, television. Dannah was the former senior vice president at Brownstone Productions where she developed projects including Over My Dead Body at HBO Max, Red Queen, and The Six at Peacock, and Bedrock at Fox, among others. Prior to Brownstone, Shinder oversaw the development and sale of several broadcast and cable projects as vice president of Television at The Jackal Group and served as manager of creative affairs at Sony Pictures Television.

HJ Shea completed his Doctorate in Theology at Oxford University, UK. He is currently an assistant professor at Boston College.

Brashad Johnson and Melissa Mitchell were married in 2018 in Miami, Florida. Melissa attended Stetson University and Brashad played baseball at Bethune Cookman University. The happy couple is expecting their first child in the spring of 2022.

Claire Shea finished her doctorate in education at the University of St. Thomas. She is currently serving as the deputy superintendent at American Creativity Academy in Kuwait leading a school of 6,000 students.

Anna Hickey Fotis and husband Mike welcomed baby William Prine. Will was born on Sept. 21.

2010

Molly Monson and Ian Murphy were married Aug. 20 at Camp Foley. Molly teaches first grade and coaches volleyball at St. Therese School in Deephaven. This upcoming hockey season will be her sixth season on the BSM girls’ hockey coaching staff. Ian is the boys’ varsity lacrosse coach and the JV boys’ hockey coach at Armstrong High School. Both Molly and Ian love coaching at their alma maters.

Jessie Shannon and Vlad Popescu were married on Aug. 21 in Rochester. It was their second wedding together due to the constraints of COVID for their 2020 nuptials.

Adam Chorley and Megan Sarahan were married on Sept. 10. They are pictured with their dog Ferguson. The Chorleys live in New Hope.

Vince Beacom and Kate Struthers were married July 25 at St. Victoria Church. The two Twin Cities natives met at Marquette University. Vince is a patent agent at a law firm and Kate is a senior account executive for a marketing agency. The Beacoms live and work in Washington, DC. Natalie Perrine and Andy Wagener were married on June 26 at Our Lady of Grace in Edina followed by a gathering of family and friends at Interlachen Country Club.

Jack Tift married Ali Roth on June 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Jack is currently a lean innovation superintendent at Mortenson Company and Ali is a pediatric registered nurse. Jack and Ali live in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Nick Austin played four years in the ECAC with Colgate University, playing 110 games for the Raiders. Austin scored a combined nine goals and 37 assists for 46 points and was named a four-time ECAC Hockey All American Team honoree. He was also named to the 2017-18 ECAC Hockey Rookie Team. Nick will continue his education and hockey career by playing for UMass Lowell.

Glynnis Forsberg and Edward Devine finally got married on Loving Day, June 12, 2021, after postponing their wedding in July 2020. They were married at Windows on Minnesota in Minneapolis, surrounded by family and close friends. Edward is one of the proud co-owners of a local brick and mortar restaurant and food truck called It’s 7am Somewhere. The Devine-Forsbergs live in Golden Valley.

Kennedy Harris passed the Red Knight baton to her sister Kasey ‘27. Kennedy is a student at Hampton University in Hamptom, VA. It’s impressive that Kennedy still has her shirt that she received as a new BSM student.

Louie Hyde got the Tommies off to a great start in D1 football. He kicked a 39-yard field goal in the closing minute to secure a win over Michigan Tech.

Grant Besse was recently inducted into the CCX Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding career as a high school and college hockey player. Grant continued his education and hockey career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently playing for the Tӧlzer Lӧwen hockey team in Bavaria.

Carter Burn graduated from the United States Naval Academy and left Annapolis for the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated in one year with a master’s degree in computer science. He then moved to Augusta, Georgia, to complete Cyber Security training. Carter is now stationed at the Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command center located in Fort Meade, Maryland.

Carson Limesand was named Divisional Star of the Week by The North American Hockey League for the week ending Sept. 12, 2021. The Northeast Generals rookie netminder made 43 saves in his NAHL debut in a 3-1 win and completed the mid-week road sweep of the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks., stopping 95 of 98 shots in a pair of wins. Aviation Alums - Tom Wooden ’84 (left) and John Johnson ’03 (right) are both pilots for Delta Air Lines on the Boeing 737. They discovered their Red Knight roots during a four-day trip from JFK airport to Bozeman, Montana, and had a great time reminiscing about their BSM days.

Red Knight Racers - Betsy Van Cleve Stiegler ’06 and Teague Jackson ’24 were both racing at the Pre-Fat mountain bike race in Cable, Wisconsin. Teague placed 2nd in the men’s 17-mile race and Betsy finished 2nd in the women’s 11-mile race. Teague races for BSM’s B3 cycling team.

Letter from Board Chair When we embarked on the 2020-21 school year, we knew it would be a year unlike any other, filled with significant challenges. But thanks to the dedication of our faculty and staff, and a strong partnership between students, parents, and alums, 2020-21 turned out to be one of the best years in Benilde-St. Margaret’s history.

Though the pandemic created unprecedented hurdles, the BSM community demonstrated incredible ingenuity and resolve in overcoming them. Long-standing traditions were honored in creative ways, alums offered support from near and far, parents worked with teachers to develop strategies to keep students in touch with one another, and new programs and routines were born. Beyond the challenges of the pandemic, 2020-21 was also an opportunity for BSM to reestablish our commitment to the values that make us who we are. Guided by student, parent, and alum feedback, we created important avenues to foster belonging and inclusion in our student body. We also continued building on cutting-edge programs designed to encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, all while fostering faith and inspiring a spirit of service in Red Knights.

None of these things would have been possible without your generous financial support. Together, our community gave over $3 million to support tuition assistance, academic programs, and facility enhancements in 2020-21. We also completed our five-year capital campaign, which culminated in the opening of the Cube, an innovative learning center designed to promote curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. And we experienced the most successful Day of Giving in BSM’s history, raising more funds than ever before, bolstered by a record number of individual contributions.
