President’s Letter There is little doubt that 2020 will be talked about for decades as a pivotal time in the history of the world, our country, our state, and our school. Within a four-month period, we have experienced the onset of a pandemic, economic volatility, and demands for racial justice. Amid all the uncertainty, 217 Red Knights graduated into a world that needs their creativity, faith in action, humility, perseverance, and hope more than ever. In March, the landscape changed as COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges to our families and school. The fundamental elements of social interaction shifted, and at BSM, faculty, staff, students, and parents worked tirelessly to find creative new ways to stay true to our mission. The demands were exceptional; however, together we were able to pivot and recreate our entire educational system.

In May and June, social injustice in our community shed light on painful realities of systemic racism that must be acknowledged and addressed. Our Catholic values, rooted in our Benedictine, LaSallian, and Sisters of St. Joseph heritage, profess a community of true belonging, yet that value has not been a reality for all of our families. We have accelerated our work with faculty, staff, and families to address these challenges at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. We know we must honor the dignity of each individual and realize that God’s presence in our world guides each of us toward humility, patience, and generosity. This issue of the Crown & Shield arrives at a unique time in our history, and it recognizes some of the important accomplishments at BSM this past year: • A transformation from face-to-face to virtual learning and connections for 1,168 students. • Emergency financial assistance for families navigating economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic. • Construction on our newest campus addition, The Cube, designed to promote curiosity, creativity, and collaborative learning. • Innovative RED strand courses launched, focused on design thinking across the curriculum. • Virtual networking with scores of alumni, as the Class of 2020 began mapping their futures and building lifelong relationships across the BSM community.

The success of our students clearly depends on many in the BSM community. Together, students, parents, and educators rose to meet the challenges of these uncertain times. Alumni were there at every opportunity to offer their expertise and time. Volunteers put their hearts, heads, and hands into new projects to support our families. And financial benefactors invested in immediate needs and the future because they believe in the Red Knight mission. Jesus relied on humility in serving others, and this spirit defines the BSM community. Pandemic Shapes End of the Year The Class of 2020, and their fellow Red Knights, walked out of school on March 12 anticipating two weeks of online school and spring break. All would be well on April 6 when they returned to the classroom and their spring sports and activities. Online school was not foreign to them. Minnesota weather (snowy and/or cold days) had already provided them with that experience. Of course, what no one realized then was that the end of the school year would be very different. Online school evolved into Extended Online School (EOS), spring sports and activities were eventually cancelled, and familiar end-ofyear events were carried out virtually. Administration, faculty, and staff worked overtime to provide an exceptional learning experience and meaningful events and ceremonies.

For the seniors, this was their final hurrah. There would be no prom, final banquets, or goodbye hugs and good wishes. However, “reimagine” became the buzzword, and many scheduled events had a new look. The May 1 alumni/senior breakfast was held with out-oftown alums via Zoom and Google Meet. Student Recognition and the annual Awards Ceremony were viewed on Flip Grid, and the Easter and closing school Mass were streamed live on YouTube.

Baccalaureate and graduation were the two remaining question marks. Seniors and their parents were not to be denied these special events. Fr. Tim Wozniak ‘66 celebrated Baccalaureate Mass on a raised stage near BSM’s first base dugout with huge screens to the east and west for all to view from the parking lot. The seniors and their parents arrived in cars, tuned into Mass on the radio, and celebrated as a family. Yes, alums, Mike Jeremiah was there to sing “Forever Young,” and the two elected senior leaders, Hope Wang and Joe Marinaro, ended the program with words of wisdom for their classmates. July 25 was the day the seniors had been awaiting. With a class smaller than the 250 limit for gatherings, the graduating Red Knights were ready to proudly walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. The ceremony, originally planned to take place on the stadium turf, was moved to the Great Hall after threats of rain and a summer storm dotted the radar. Parents viewed the entire ceremony on big screens in the BSM parking lot. 2020 - a graduation, a class, and a year to remember. 4

Sarah took many challenging classes, including a variety of AP and honors courses, impressive considering she is a full grade ahead in terms of her age. “It’s rewarding because obviously we all put a lot of time into school, so it’s the culmination of all of our efforts,” Sarah stated. Sarah is excited to play volleyball at Emory University and is considering applied mathematics or biophysics on the premed track.

Elizabeth considers being a valedictorian a great honor and the culmination of four years of diligent schoolwork. “I feel accomplished and am happy to have received this honor because it represents the hard work I’ve put in for the past four years,” Elizabeth said. She participated in a variety of activities at BSM, and his headed to the Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota.

“This means a lot to me, and I am very glad I was able to get it done,” Joe shared of the honor of being a valedictorian. He is also a National Merit Finalist, captain of the football team, captain of Math League, and senior class president. Joe is headed to Boston College to play football and study finance and economics.

Maggie is a salutatorian for the Class of 2020. “I always wanted to get good grades; I don’t know if being salutatorian was necessarily my goal. It was more just getting the best grades that I possibly could.” Maggie is headed to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she plans on majoring in communication sciences and disorders.

After years of hard work, Ronan Brew can say it has paid off. “I don’t think I would’ve had the experience and success that I did if it weren’t for BSM. I can’t think of a better place to grow and learn, and I’m always grateful for the BSM community that allowed me to succeed the way I did during my time.” Ronan remarked. He plans to further his education at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, with a dual major in public policy analysis and economics.

Kiara is a salutatorian, managing to earn all As and only two A-s at BSM. Kiara’s favorite class was also her hardest. “I really enjoy math and science, but my favorite class is AP Calculus BC—even though it is one of my hardest and most time-consuming classes. I never mind doing the work because I enjoy it.” Next year, Kiarra will attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville to study medicine.

William Valley “My primary motivation for maintaining my grades was my future. I wanted to give myself the best chance to get into the college I wanted to go to,” William stated. He also participated in a wide range of sports and activities for a well-rounded BSM experience. The University of Minnesota Honors Program, College of Science and Engineering is his next stop.

Dominic Vogel Dominic excelled in his classes throughout high school, especially math where he was “...meticulous, super neat, and very thorough,” according to his BSM math teacher. Dominic also participated in baseball where he was a crafty left-handed pitcher and a solid first baseman. Dominic plans to continue his education at the University of Minnesota studying economics.

Margaret McCaffrey Margaret was a new student to BSM at the start of senior year. Her military family has lived all over the world and recently relocated from Virginia Beach to Minnesota. The family chose BSM for its extensive AP programs. She will be attending Catholic University in Washington D.C. next fall where she will be in the honors program studying physics.

Abigail Swanson During her time at BSM, Abigail served as captain for three sports, girls’ cross country, alpine skiing, and track. She was also a member of NHS and the National World Language Honor Society. Her true passion for science led her down a successful biomedical track at BSM and she will continue her studies at the University of Minnesota next year.

President’s Award Winners Shine

Our President’s Award recipients contribute to the BSM story in so many ways. They are without question academically accomplished and widely involved in BSM life outside of the classroom, and have demonstrated faith and strength of character. These students were carefully selected by a group of BSM educators as “true leaders.”

All of these young men and women push themselves to learn knowing the inherent value of education. Their academic endeavors are reflected in biomedical research, robot designs, economic models, original stories, artistic and musical creations, multilingual mastery, and AP scholarship. These recipients are softball, football, baseball, basketball, and soccer players. They are mentors, attorneys in training, mathematicians, and skiers. In the end, what unites them is their commitment to serving others, shining brightly as they made their mark as Red Knights.

Al Reger Winners Model

Strong Leadership Breah Banks Since arriving in seventh grade, Breah Banks has continuously exemplified what it means to be academically focused, collaborative, and emotionally attuned to her peers. Breah is an AP student and a member of the National Honor Society, the National Language Honor Society, and the National History Honor Society. In addition to her scholarly achievements, Breah excels in co-curricular activities. She ably represented BSM at both the state and national speech qualifier tournaments, earning sixth place and fourth place respectively, and served as captain in her senior year. Building on her public speaking experience, Breah also served as captain of the Mock Trial team and earned fourth place at the state tournament. With her plans to study law, Breah also participated as an extern with the Juvenile Justice Court and the United States District Court of Minnesota. This year, during what has become one of the most transformational periods in our national history, Breah applied her astuteness, sensitivity, and commitment to equity in her work as a student facilitator for the students of color affinity group. She co-founded the Female Affinity Meeting, a group for young female minority students in our community. Throughout her time at BSM, and on multiple fronts, she has helped bridge crucial dialogue between students and administrators. Furthermore, Breah pursued her commitment to equity outside of the classroom through her involvement with the Minneapolis chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc, serving as both vice president and president.

Breah was the recipient of the Patti Healy Weber Scholarship award this year and will begin the next phase of her education at Spelman College. She plans to study political science and psychology, with post-graduate plans to attend law school. Her journey is sure to be marked by excellence and thoughtfulness.

The BSM community is very proud of the 2020 Al Reger Award winners. Thank you Joe and Breah for your effectiveness as team captains and for your leadership and service within the Benilde-St. Margaret’s community. You have served as incredible role models by embodying the spirit of what it truly means to be a Red Knight.

Joe Marinaro In his Baccalaureate remarks, Senior Class President Joe Marinaro likened the high school journey of his class to the evolution of a seedling. Freshman year they were planted, they sprouted as sophomores, they were growing as juniors, and in full bloom as seniors. For Al Reger Award winner Joe, each stage revealed more of his passion, commitment, leadership, and concern for others. Joe was a proven leader in the classroom, in student council, on the football field, and in many other areas of student life. A two-year class president, two-time football captain, and Math League captain, Joe was also the recipient of the Lynch Leadership Award. The seed of academic rigor was planted on very fertile soil. Joe was one of the valedictorians of the Class of 2020 and he was also a National Merit Finalist. Math teacher Mary Seppala noted that, “When Joe combines passion and motivation with his academic abilities, he’s going to accomplish some pretty amazing things. He can do anything he sets his mind to.” Self described as a “hard worker who makes tough situations work for me,” Joe tested that description during his football career. Two potentially careerending injuries during sophomore and junior year put Joe on the sidelines, confirming the phrase that “every flower must grow through dirt.” According to Coach Jon Hanks, “His strong faith pulled him through. He is not a quitter and will not take ‘no’ for an answer.” Joe’s football career blossomed his senior year, and according to Coach Hanks, “He is one of the brightest and most dynamic football players on both sides of the ball. He is a leader in every aspect.”

The Al Reger Award is given each year to two students, one male and one female, chosen by the BSM faculty and staff, for “outstanding dedication and zeal to the service of God and school.”

Joe was recognized as a strong role model who was always encouraging to others. Mike Jeremiah worked with Joe as the prayer leader for the football team and notes that, “In spite of all he accomplished, Joe remained a very humble kid who always put others first. He truly lived out this year’s Scripture theme: ‘Let us then pursue what leads to peace and to building up one another.’” Joe is ready to move on and begin a new growth cycle. He is excited to make the most of his academic and athletic experience in Boston and play football for the Boston College Eagles. He leaves very grateful for his Red Knight journey and “every minute spent as a student at BSM.”

Athena Winner Sets

High Standards By Margaret Anderson ‘20

Following in the footsteps of her older sister Anna ‘17 and playing on a team for her dad, Sarah Luong made the BSM varsity volleyball team as a freshman. She went on to become a captain for both her junior and senior years and has been awarded the 2020 Athena Award. “During my freshman varsity season, I had a really unique situation. My sister was on the team, and my dad was the coach. It was definitely weird at first.” Being on a team with two family members has its upsides and downsides, but Luong was grateful for the experience. “As any coach’s kid could tell you, it is so rewarding, but it also can present many challenges. Because of him, I work harder, and I have improved immensely, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that this

sometimes put a strain on our family dynamic. Over the years, we have certainly gotten better at keeping the gym at the gym and home at home. In the end, I’m very grateful to have had him as my coach; I wouldn’t be half of the player, or person, that I am without him,” Luong said. Luong’s father, and coach, Phong Luong, shared an opinion similar to Sarah. “Like many father/daughter coaching situations, it has probably been more difficult on Sarah just because I have definitely gone out of my way to be harder and place higher expectations on her more than the other players. The time I’ve gotten to spend with her over the years at BSM volleyball has been immeasurable, and I’ll always cherish the memories we’ve made on and off the court,” Mr. Luong said.

If anyone has encountered Sarah Luong, they know that she is not only a killer athlete, but she also works just as hard in the classroom 2020 Athena Award as she does on the court. Despite playing honoree Sarah Luong was a volleyball year-round, being a Link four-year varsity volleyball Crew commissioner, captain of Math player, Math league captain, League, medical club member, Red Red Knight volunteer, and Knight Volunteer Corps member, and a Caribou Coffee employee, Sarah valedictorian. She will managed to keep a 4.0 GPA throughout attend Emory University all four years of her high school career. as a scholar-athlete. “Time management has certainly been a struggle sometimes, especially during my junior and senior years. For me, the number one priority has always been school. I need to be on top of my schoolwork before trying to do anything else. It has also been very important to me to recognize that playing volleyball, or sports or activities in general, is a true privilege. If I keep this in mind, I find it easier to time manage because I’m more motivated to get my schoolwork done,” Sarah said. Throughout it all, Luong has learned a lot through her BSM volleyball career, and she carries those lessons learned to her life outside of volleyball. “The biggest lesson I have learned through BSM volleyball has been accountability in many different regards. This has meant always being on time, working hard at every practice, supporting my teammates, and taking responsibility for my decisions. Most simply, I’ve learned that choices have consequences, either good or bad, and I am responsible for each choice I make,” Luong said. Next year, Luong will be taking on another ambitious adventure, both athletically and academically at college. She will be playing volleyball at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and she plans on majoring in mathematics or biophysics on the pre-medicine track. 10

Two-sport Athlete

Lands on Top By Morgan Anderson ‘20

Nick Peterson came to Benilde-St. Margaret’s his sophomore year because of the outstanding academics, and left as an honor graduate and an outstanding BSM athlete. As captain of both varsity basketball and football, Peterson’s leadership is evident. “Nick is a top character guy. He is a diligent worker and passionate about everything he does whether it’s about football or basketball. He is a natural leader,” football coach Jon Hanks said. It’s no surprise that Peterson was named this year’s Al Blasing Award recipient. Pre-game rituals were an essential for Peterson. Whether it was spicy chips before a basketball game, or a 360° chest bump with his teammate, Joe Marinaro, before every football game, it did the trick for Peterson to come ready to play. During his tenure on the football team, Peterson recalls the team’s section run during the 2018 season. Placed as the sixth seed, the Red Knights upset the second and third seeded teams, and came close to winning against SMB, the first seed. Beating Holy Angels at their home field in a close game and upsetting Providence in an overtime comeback win were unforgettable to Peterson. “We had a lot of hardship that season and the run was so fun. The memories that I made in that short couple of weeks will last me a long time,” Peterson said. Peterson’s dedication to his coaches and teammates spoke volumes to his character. “When he broke his hand this past year, most kids would have hung it up because it would be very difficult to play QB. It was very difficult, and I’m sure it was very painful, but it just shows he had a lot of courage. He was the best guy we had and he wasn’t going to be on the shelf,” Hanks said. The courage to battle through a broken arm displays his selfmotivation. “It’s all about what you can do on your own without others telling you,” Peterson said. With many people to look up to, there has always been a special bond between Peterson and his dad. “My role model is my dad. He’s always kept me accountable and pushed me to be the best version of me. He’s been a dad, coach, fan, and many other roles in my life and I’ve always looked up to him for that,” Peterson said. Having so much to be proud of, from participating in NHS to being named captain of two varsity sports, Peterson is humbled by this award. “This award means a lot to me. It’s the biggest honor a Benilde-St. Margaret’s athlete could ever achieve. I’m always thankful for my coaches and teammates who have supported me the last three years. They have everything to do with this award, as well. Without

them, I wouldn’t have had the success I had these past few years,” Peterson said.

Saint John’s University is gaining an outstanding teammate, player, leader, and friend next year, as Peterson continues his journey playing football for the Johnnies for the next four years.

Retirees Leave a Legacy

For these Red Knight moms, working at BSM was more than a job. It became a vocation for which we are forever grateful. We will miss English teacher Maura Brew and Assistant to the President Debbie Martinson, but we wish them all the best in retirement.

Maura Brew In the middle of winter 1997, Maura and Peter Brew moved their then family of six from sunny California to Minnesota for a job transfer. Having taught in community college, university, and private high school settings for years, Maura swore her teaching days were over. Luckily for BSM, that hiatus did not last long.

When asked what she will miss the most, Maura paused. “To be honest, it has not quite sunk in yet that I will not be coming back next year. Reflecting on my time at this special place, it is hard for me to recall only one or two poignant memories. Both in and out of the classroom, my experience has been truly rewarding and something I will carry with me forever.” In May, Maura was awarded Faculty of the Year for the second time in her BSM career. Maura brings out the best in those around her. One colleague remarked, “She has been a positive, uplifting, amazing role model to all of us. Students learn so much from her, and what they learn sticks with them for life.” As Maura looks forward to spending more time with her family, preparing for the arrival of a new grandbaby, and reading for fun, we cannot thank her enough for all that she has given to the Red Knight community.

Debbie Martinson From the front desk to development to admissions to executive assistant, Debbie Martinson has seemingly done it all. Since 1988, she has called BSM her home away from home, and she has made her mark as an exceedingly kind and reliable “Jill of all trades.” For the last decade or so, she has been the calming presence behind BSM’s president, but the time has come for her next adventure.

Roughly a year and a half later, and with a few days of subbing at BSM under her belt, Maura was ready to sign on as a parttime French teacher. However, overnight, a position in the English department opened, and the next day Maura was back to teaching full-time. “I was immediately struck by the overwhelming sense of respect permeating the school. It drew me in, and over the course of my career, I have been continually reminded why Benilde-St. Margaret’s is such a special place.” The Red Knight community has been blessed with Maura’s intense passion for and dedication to teaching that stretched beyond the classroom. Her time, talents, and dedication extended to years as an outstanding speech coach and one-act play director. Now, more than two decades as a BSM teacher and parent (Matt ’04, Greg ’06, Sylvie ’08, Liam ’10, and Ronan ’20), Maura is ready for her next adventure. Though it will be difficult to find someone as irreplaceable as her, retirement is more than well-deserved.

Following her friend Mary Seiwert Periolat ‘67 to BSM in the late 80s, Debbie began her career as one of the receptionists at the front desk. As time passed, Debbie took on positions in different departments, always finding ways to add value to the school. Eventually, her three children (Kathleen ‘96, Andrew ‘99, and Susan ‘02) became Red Knights, and the employee/parent combo has kept Debbie at BSM ever since. Initially connected to BSM through her friend Mary, Debbie has continued making lifelong friends with her coworkers and others in the Red Knight community. In her mind, “I never felt like I was just coming to work. I have gotten to do something I enjoy with my friends while practicing my faith, so it has always been more than a job.” So, although she will no longer be hanging out with her friends at BSM, Debbie knows she will still see them on a regular basis.

As she looks forward to spending more time with her family (including a fourth grandchild born earlier this summer) and picking up some old hobbies, Debbie knows the school is in good hands. “While I never thought I would be here for so long, I am so very grateful I was. There is nothing I would trade about my experience, and I know BSM continues striving for success,” she reflected. “Debbie is one of the most genuine and positive individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with in my career. She will be missed, and I thank her immensely. Congratulations, Debbie, your retirement is well-deserved,” shared BSM President Dr. Adam Ehrmantraut. The entire Red Knight community echoes his sentiments. Thank you, Debbie!

Faculty and Staff Honored

Red Knight faculty and staff are at the heart of everything Benilde-St. Margaret’s offers. Each year, several awards are presented to honor outstanding faculty and staff at BSM.

Evonne Zahedi - BSM Parents’ Choice Award Mrs. Zahedi just completed 20 years at Benilde-St. Margaret’s Junior High, and her ability to teach science with energy and passion is as brilliant as ever. The reality of Extended Online School this spring allowed some Red Knight parents a unique glimpse into her virtual classroom that left them extremely impressed. According to one parent, “Mrs. Zahedi is passionate about science and holds the kids accountable to their highest potential. Even I enjoy catching portions of her online class and video instruction. I learn (or relearn) something every time! Kids are always engaged in her class.” From the array of nominations Mrs. Zahedi received, it is evident her compassion for her students and her work has developed a love for science in many students. One parent nomination spoke for many, “She is excellent, excellent, excellent!”

John Groess - Apple Polisher Award Demonstrating outstanding service and dedication to students is what Mr. Groess does. Though he may be known for his humor and passion for ultimate frisbee, Mr. Groess’s ability to teach math effectively and help students learn in an enjoyable environment does not go unnoticed. In the words of a student, ”[Mr. Groess] is a teacher who pushes you in the best way, even when it’s online. He is very easy to approach, and is great at helping those who struggle. He always brings the right amount of energy to the classroom.”

Steve Pohlen - Staff of the Year Director of Learning & Technology Dr. Steve Pohlen ‘86 had his work cut out for him this year. He rose beyond expectations to create exceptional positive influences across the school and worked tirelessly to make everyone else’s job easier during Extended Online School. His adaptability, constant learning, and unique perspective offered in support of coworkers, students, and families have been particularly valuable. His colleagues are incredibly thankful for his talent and character. According to one colleague, “BSM is a known leader in the Twin Cities for educating students for the future. Steve has helped us to shine brighter than ever before during these unprecedented challenges of distant teaching and learning.”

Connect Across the Country

The alumni/senior breakfast on May 1, 2020, looked very different this year. The annual event was not held in the Great Hall as it has been since its onset in 2014. Instead, the event was hosted in a series of virtual meetings as alums from all over the country spoke with small groups of seniors to answer questions about their college experience and give advice for a smooth transition. Forty-five alums from 20 different states were asked to participate in small group discussions with the Class of 2020. Each group had a senior “captain” who organized the virtual call and helped facilitate discussions about college, internships, and career choices. While BSM would never have imagined having to host this event in a virtual capacity, it was a nice opportunity for alums who live outside the Twin Cities to engage with the Class of 2020. It was also a great chance for all seniors to feel connected (to each other) and to the larger alumni community. Many students also displayed their school choice by wearing their college T-shirt for the May 1 virtual event as is the tradition when the event is held at school.

Big sister Charlotte (almost 2 at the time) waited in the car to be rescued by her Zeman grandparents. The healthy family is at home in Chanhassen.

2 016 Michigan Tech’s Amanda Kautzer was the recipient of 8 the Elite 90 award for the 2020 NCAA Skiing Championships. This award, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among her peers, The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAAs. Sam Rocheford and Charlie Wolfe graduated from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. Sam graduated summa cum laude and Charlie magna cum laude.
