Eager to get the game started, Belton High School baseball team runs onto Al Hamra Field, hoping to add another game to their win column. Senior Jackson Russell takes the mound to pitch in a game of his last season ever. He loves his teammates and always wants them to succeed. Next to him on the field is first baseball Josh Mittlestadt. he is a junior and has been on varsity since his freshman year. He looked up to the seniors in a big way and will miss all of them. “I am probably just gonna miss having the seniors around to hang out with outside of practice and just having that leadership and having somebody to look up to.” Even though he is leaving some of his past behind, he is still looking up for the future. “I am looking forward to being a senior next year and trying to make a bug jump and compete in districts,” he says.

Junior Cole Murphy takes his stride before hitting the ball.

As soon as the Belton girls soccer team stepped onto the turf again after falling short in districts last season, they knew they wanted to work hard to achieve their unfinished goals. Going into the season with a new head coach and new team captains the girls never lost sight of their season goals. Junior team captain Nora Dunlap said,” To be a good team leader to the girls that look up to me I act with good sportsmanship on and off the field. I give respect to towards every girl on the team because we are family.” Senior captain Takara Lesch states,” My role was to bring the team together support one another, and uplift the team as a whole.” Junior Rane Rynard’s favorite thing about high school soccer is being able to play with some of her closest childhood friends that she doesn't get to compete with during club season. The underclassmen already have goals set that they are working towards in their offseason and going into next soccer season. Junior Brooklyn Tavenero said,” My goal is to improve my technical skills and win conference.” Kennedy Holloway’s goal is to win conference and to beat William Chrisman going into her senior year. As the girls finish out this years soccer season they look to continue improving and putting in hard work to compete at their highest level for the next time they step onto the turf.

Golf is a very technical sport, as well as a very individual sport despite the fact that players are part of a team. The athletes need to be at one with themselves and sure of their skills when they play golf. Senior Jeffrey Jones says, “This sport is more geared toward those in a better mental state, you need to know what to do and when to do it to succeed.” When joining the team one needs to forget practically everything known about the sport, it's completely different when actually playing. It's also harder than it looks, as time goes on its almost muscle memory as the team members swing their way to victory. “It changed the environment for me on how I look at people and to be more outgoing. Just knowing that you’re loved. Also meeting new people makes me feel better and makes everyone else around me feel better,” Austin Smith says when asked how golf impacted his academic life.

After six years of the Pirates nothere winning any of their Byline goes seasons, the boys pulled through with a 7-4 winning record. We talked to coaches Gregory Martin, Daniel Ogle, and Sophomore Carson Dent about this year's season. We asked Martin the head coach for the Pirates for the past twenty-one years what his favorite memory was this season. Martin says, “There is no specific moment that can be my favorite. This was a good group of guys to be around. The real satisfaction as a coach is watching the individual growth of each player in the 2 months of the season that they are playing/practicing every day.” We also talked to Assistant coach Ogle about how he thought the season went as a whole. He says, “As for this season, we've been the most successful we've been in the boys season since I joined the team. We typically tout a .500 record but this season we were well above our typical record.” Lastly, we talked to sophomore Carson Dent, Carson has been playing for two years and plans on doing so again in the upcoming season. He tells us that “As of right now I only play tennis but I want to do something else, I don't know if I want to do it in college or professionally.”

As he wraps his second season as track and field head coach, Coach Fogel discusses why he enjoys coaching the sport. “I think the relationships and the people you get to meet, the daily conversations, and the interactions, somebody starting one place and finishing in the other, seeing the belief cycle improve, maybe starting off with less belief and finishing with a lot more belief in themselves and their abilities, just the daily interactions with the staff and with the athletes are my favorites,” he said. Fogel said that he has seen improvements in his student athletes when comparing the past two seasons. He said, “We’re chugging along, we’re getting better, we have small issues like getting along and cohesion and such, as all teams usually do, but I anticipate us finishing with a lot of PR’s, and hopefully progressing a couple people through their goals as we get into the post-season meets.” Freshman Amaya Crowder is a star athlete, and shares about why she chose to join the track team. “The environment, and the people and the coaches,” she said. She said that throughout her season, Coach Fogel continued to encourage her to stick with the sport. “It was Coach Fogel, and he told me how fun it’s going to be, and how short the season is going to be, and how it’ll take my mind off of other things like basketball, because basketball is a longer season compared to track. That’s what he told me and I actually love track now.”

Students hop off their party buses and into Arrowhead Stadium as they ready themselves for a night on the dance floor. For many students, this is the first prom they attended because of the COVID-19 pandemic."This year‘s prom was a lot better because we all got to interact with each other more and be closer and not have a mask on during the whole dance. Last year‘s prom was very dull and we didn’t get to interact with each other as much because we had a sit at different tables that we were assigned, so a lot of people just felt like they couldn’t talk to their other friends” says senior Georgia Meakins. Students said they enjoyed prom because they felt a sense of normalcy again. “Going into prom, I was looking forward to seeing everyone, danging, and having fun,” senior Alyssa Shoemaker said.
