CITY
CURLING CLUB
First started in 1987, the Kansas City Curling Club was founded by a small group of curling enthusiasts from the greater Kansas City area. From its start on the outdoor rink in Crown Center, to Pepsi Ice in Overland Park, to The Line Creek Community Arena, and now in the Kansas City Curling Club dedicated facility in Blue Springs, MO, the club has grown and fostered development of the sport of curling. The Kansas City Curling Club is a non-profit organization run 100% by volunteers.
After a ten year search for a building suitable for curling in the greater Kansas City, committee members met with the owner of the Blue Springs building site. The synergy and enthusiasm of the building committee and the owner led to a plan to construct the club at the current location in Blue Springs. Curling is played on ice between two four-member teams who use stones with different colored handles. Each game consists of eight ends that are similar to innings in baseball. During an end, each team member alternates throwing two stones toward a circular target area (eight total stones per team), called the house, the center of which is approximately 93 feet away. Only one team scores points per end. The team with their stones closest to the center of the target area, called the button, gets one point for each stone between the button and the opposing teams
nearest stone. What makes curling a team sport is sweeping as all four players work together to achieve the desired strategy. This sweeping reduces the friction of the ice, causing the stone to travel further and straighter. After each end is completed, play switches to the house at the other end of the sheet. But curling is more that a sport. It is a 500-year-old tradition of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Before each game team members shake hands. After the game, winners clean the ice and buy the losing team members a refreshment.
The mission of the Kansas City Curling Club is to grow the Olympic sport of curling in the greater Kansas City Area by providing a dedicated facility for open and league play from October through April. The facility is also user friendly for handicapped curlers and dedicated to developing and providing a youth program for future Olympians. Our dedicated curling center provides first class conditions for league competitions, tournament events, community/educational events for all ages and most importantly membership growth. Our center with ice dedicated to curling is
the only facility like it within a 380 miles radius of Kansas City. The club is interested in teaching the game of curling to anyone from about eight years of age to eighty. We offer learn to curl sessions, primarily on Saturdays, and welcome businesses to use our sport for team building exercises. The warm room can be also rented to meet a variety of needs whenever curling is not going on.
To learn more about how to get involved, go to KCCurling.com and find a learn to curl session. The cost is $30 per session, where you will learn the basics of curling, safe practices, how to deliver a stone, sweep a stone, strategies, scoring, and the sportsmanship of curling.
The club will be hosting our annual Kansas City Barbeque Bonspiel from October 7th through October 9th. Twenty four teams from around the country (and some form across the pond) will be competing in tournament format. We will even have an Olympic silver medalist participating in the event. We will host several more bonspiels throughout our season, attracting visitors to Blue Springs for the events.
