MANUFACTURING DAY 2019
Approximately 70 juniors & seniors from Fort Osage Career & Tech Center celebrated Manufacturing (MFG) Day in Blue Springs on Tuesday, October 1. MFG Day was developed in 2012 by the National Association of Manufacturers Manufacturing Institute as an opportunity for manufacturers to show their communities what they do, highlight the economic importance of manufacturing, and inspire the next generation of manufacturers by introducing amazing career potentials. In Blue Springs, the Chamber encouraged a Career Exploration Day for Manufacturing, Warehouse and Distribution opportunities. Students toured Fike, Kohl’s Distribution Center, and Faurecia. When students applied to participate in MFG Day, they were asked what they were interested in doing after they graduated and how this field trip would help them with their future career goals. Students’ comments were: •“It will help me see what it is actually like in the work environment. What they do on a day to day basis and maybe help me set some goals.” •“I’m hoping to go to Missouri S&T for 4-8 years. I’m kind of interested in both Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. Afterwards I’m hoping for something like internships and job-shadowing.” •“This trip will help me by showing me how manufacturing/warehouse plants actually work. I have always been curious to see what goes on inside these plants. It will show me what skills I need to be a successful worker.” Thanks to Fike, Kohl’s and Faurecia for providing tours. Thanks to Evergy, Community America Credit Union, Petland Blue Springs, Blue Ridge Bank & Trust and St. Mary’s Medical Center for sponsoring lunch. Thanks to Side Pockets for providing lunch and Sonic for providing drinks. #MFGDAY19

Meet Mike Mike Leathers, a 1981 graduate of Blue Springs High School, joined Zucca Roofing a month ago for business development to help increase their amount of commercial jobs. Mike joined the Navy in 1982 where he spent 10 1/2 years. Upon getting out of the US Navy in 1993 he got into the construction industry. Mike chose to go back to school at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where he met his bride from Lee’s Summit, Amber Horner. Mike’s been in construction or construction sales since getting out of the Navy. Roofing sales has been a major portion of his sales experience, with the last three years exclusively in commercial roofing sales and installation. Mike and Zucca roofing are excited to say they are expanding their commercial roofing and look forward to helping their awesome customers with great commercial roofing products.
