Tuesday, August 18 8:30 - 10:00 AM Chamber Office + Virtual REGISTER HERE Presented by Michael Stoker, MA, Certified Executive Coach. Management by coaching can move an organization from surviving to thriving. Especially in servicebased industries like healthcare, management by coaching outperforms management by pedagogy (i.e., teaching). Advances in technology and medicine have introduced many complex, detailed solutions to many complicated problems in healthcare. The challenge for leaders has become the consistent application of detailed processes due to the sheer number of potential points of failure and a distracted workforce. Ironically, a pre-modern approach of apprenticeship and coaching can lead healthcare organizations toward a culture of consistent outcomes. Organizations that consistently coach deliver results consistently.

MEET A BOARD MEMBER Chad Smith I am the owner of Chad Smith Insurance Agency, Inc. As the owner of a small business I obviously wear many hats, but the most important roles I have are hiring, training, and mentoring my team members and my role on the team is helping customers save and invest money for their future. This is my 4th year on the board. The Chamber has contributed to my business first, by growing me as a leader and making me a better business owner, and second, by introducing me to so many people that have led to clients, business contacts, and growth for many of my employees as well. The people I’ve met through the Chamber, and the relationships that have branched out from there, have been an integral part of our success. I enjoy playing basketball (when I can again). I love sports, watching and playing and playing games with my family. I teach 4th & 5th grade Sunday school at my church and enjoy all teaching and coaching. I have been married to Carla for 23 years. We met in college and got married after graduation. We have a daughter (Liberty) who will graduate in August from Belmont University, a son (Chason) who will be a senior at South this year, and a daughter (Chloe) who will be a freshman at South this year. We moved to Blue Springs in 2005 when I opened my business and have absolutely loved this community ever since! Chad serves as the Secretary/Treasurer for the 2020 Board of the Blue Springs Chamber.

Jackson County Mask Order Q&A The Chamber had an opportunity to meet with representatives from the Jackson County Health Department and the Jackson County Environmental Health Office to answer some of the questions our members have regarding the Mask Order from the Jackson County Health Director Bridgette Shaffer. What happens if a complaint is made regarding the mask guidelines at a restaurant, bar, lodging or pool? First Offense – A Health inspector will pay a visit to the establishment and issue a warning. Second Offense - An inspector will visit again and hand deliver a letter stating the establishment needs to be compliant. Third Offense – The Inspector will visit the establishment again; the establishment will be closed for a deep clean for 24 hours. The health inspector will then reopen the business. In all 3 cases, the health inspector MUST witness the infraction for any action to be taken. What happens if a complaint is made regarding the mask guidelines for a non-food establishment? First Offense - A Health Inspector will contact the business to let them know about the complaint. Second Offense – A written letter will be mailed saying this is the 2nd complaint and the establishment needs to comply. Third Offense - A Health inspector will visit the establishment and must witness the infraction for any action to be taken. If an infraction is witnessed, the establishment will be closed for 24 hours for deep cleaning. The health inspector will then reopen the business. How should businesses handle a customer with a medical exemption from wearing a mask? The Health Department reported the Medical Exception does not mean that those with a medical condition can come into your establishment without a mask. They said it means businesses are required to have an alternative method of service to accommodate those that can’t wear a mask. This includes, but is not limited to, online ordering & curbside delivery. They report that this is due to the EEOC declaring that the COVID-19 pandemic meets the direct threat standard, based on guidance from the CDC and public health authorities regarding the risk of community spread and institution of restrictions. The Chamber continues to advocate for local businesses during this confusing time. If you receive a visit from a health inspector, be sure to request to see their ID, and consider recording your interaction with them. Unfortunately, there is always a chance that someone can impersonate a health inspector, make false claims/threats, or attempt to collect fraudulent fines. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Chamber with any questions or concerns. (816) 229-8558.

Blue Springs Fall UN-Festival is Coming to 7 Highway! Plans for the Blue Springs Fall UN-Festival to be held on September 18 and 19 have evolved to become a combined food and vendors tour with Blue Springs businesses included. Starting July 1, phase 2.5 of the Eastern Jackson County Recovery Plan includes a 100-person maximum for large gatherings and special events. “We’ll end up having several “mini events” along 7-highway. We’ll be able to follow all social distancing guidelines.” , said Vermillion. “We know this will look completely different than the Main Street event in previous years, but we are embracing the necessary changes to make it happen.” The 2020 Fall UN-Festival will include a variety of vendor booths, food trucks & booths, Cornhole tournament, contests & giveaways, free games, and more! Our goal in moving forward with the Fall UN-Festival is to help our business partners, non-profits and local vendors recover some of the revenue they’ve lost due to cancelled events, while also drawing potential customers to our Chamber members. But the Chamber can’t do it alone! We need our members to participate and help promote the event throughout our community. There are several ways to help: - Be a Vendor Host ($50) and allow 2-3 vendors to setup in your businesses’ parking lot. This includes promotion on the Fall UN-Festival map, newspaper, social media, flyers and more. You may also setup your own booth and/or put up flyers draw foot traffic into your business. - Be an UN-Fest Sponsor. Sponsorship options include advertising on the Un-Festival map showing vendor locations, logo placement on the official UN-Festival T-shirts, Friends of Fall UN-Festival banners, and more. For more information about sponsorship opportunities or to sign up to be a Vendor Host, please contact the Chamber at (816) 229-8558 or email Jeri Willingham at jwillingham@bluespringschamber.com .
