History of Blue Springs

Named for the springs that took on the blue color in certain lights, the community of Blue Springs was organized as part of Jackson County in 1827. The Jackson County Court granted incorporation of Blue Springs on September 7. 1880, making the city the fourth settlement in the county, predating Kansas City, Missouri. Today, Blue Springs is a progressive, businessfriendly community and a great place to grow your ideas and your business. We are well known for our favorable housing market, award-winning schools, and our designation as preferred place to live, work, and play.

Blue Springs City Government Mayor Carson Ross cross@bluespringsgov.com (816) 228-0110 The Mayor is elected at-large for a four-year term. The responsibilities of the Mayor include serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the city, attending, voting, and presiding over City Council meetings and appointing members of various Boards and Commissions.

Carson Ross, a Blue Springs resident for 44 years, was initially elected as Mayor in April of 2008. Prior to his election as Mayor, Ross served a total of 14 years in the Missouri House of Representatives. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Rockhurst University in 1977 and worked for Hallmark Cards, the company from which he retired.

The Blue Springs City Council meets at 6:00pm on the first and third Mondays of each month for official Council Meetings for actions on legislation, at the Howard L. Brown Public Safety Building. All Blue Springs City Council meetings are televised live on CTV 7 and on the City’s website at www.bluespringsgov.com.

Blue Springs Emergency Services Central Jackson County Fire Protection District (CJCFPD) provides fire, EMS, public education, hazardous materials response, heavy rescue response and EMS Education to Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Lake Tapawingo and surrounding areas.

CJCFPD also operates a training facility that provides classrooms and an auditorium for fire and EMS educational services. EMS classes and fire academy are open to the public for registration. The district employs a staff of 131 people and provides coverage through 5 strategically located stations.

The CJCFPD is one of only 222 departments across the nation that is accredited with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

Prairie Township Fire Protection District (PTFPD) provides fire service to residents in the southern portion of the city, including Lake Village, Southgate and Chapman Farms developments. For more information visit www.ptfp.us or call (816) 525-4200 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): Educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our area.

Blue Springs Police Department provides police protection in the city. There are currently 100 sworn officers, 43 civilian employees, and 50 volunteers with the department. The Police Department provides the highest quality service by promoting a safe environment through police and resident interaction with emphasis on integrity, fairness, and professionalism.

In August, our community helped our district move forward on bond and levy fund transfer measures. Two questions were posed to the community and approved, and much needed project additions and renovations are already underway. Education and Rehabilitation: In 1977, the Rainbow Center opened its doors, offering assistance to children with developmental disabilities in our community. In July 1996, Rainbow Center expanded their program to include adults with disabilities too severe to function within a supported employment or sheltered workshop setting. Continuing Education: Metropolitan Community College-Blue River, (816) 604-1000, is part of the Metropolitan Community College and offers a full schedule of college courses and Associate Degree programs. Blue Springs is within 40 miles of several college campuses including the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Rockhurst, Avila, University of Central Missouri, William Jewel College and Columbia College. BUY BLUE SPRINGS/ VISITORS’ TASK FORCE

FALL FESTIVAL COMMITTEE

The Buy Blue Springs program is an education and outreach marketing plan designed to encourage residents to consider Blue Springs first when making purchases. The Discover Blue Springs program leads efforts in promoting Blue Springs as a visitor destination.

The goal is to include visitors to Discover Blue Springs and to shop, dine, stay and play in Blue Springs.

This committee plans and promotes a successful Blue Springs Fall FunFestival on September 13, 14 and 15, 2019, for the Chamber of Commerce and community.

This committee reviews the Chamber’s finances monthly and report to the Board of Directors. This is a sub-committee of the Board and is by appointment only.

genbluesprings is for professionals 40 years and under, whose company is a member. Goals include helping young professionals build a community of peers through social networking, career building and networking opportunities.

Leadership Blue Springs is aimed at developing a leadership pool for the present and future of our community. Leadership participants develop skills and knowledge of the community through nine full day sessions concerning such topics as government, youth, economic development, law enforcement and quality of life.

CONNECTORS COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Business of the Year Committee is to recognize and celebrate excellence in business. This is implemented through strict guidelines and a Selection Committee.

GOLF COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Connectors Committee is to enumerate the advantages of Chamber membership, lead efforts in retaining members and encourage members who are not current in dues payments to retain their membership with the Chamber.

This committee plans and promotes a successful annual golf tournament that encourages interaction within the business community. The 2019 tournament is May 10, at Blue Springs Golf Club.

GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Governmental Relations Committee is to represent the Blue Springs Chamber on a local, state and national level in legislative matters affecting the business community.

The purpose of the Power Hour Committee is to establish a series of educational/learning seminars for Blue Springs Chamber members that will encourage business development, personal growth and community knowledge.
