We are delighted to unveil a curated collection that embodies the ingenuity and dedication of our exceptional students. This compilation features the outstanding examination work of those enrolled in both A level and GCSE courses encompassing Food Preparation and Nutrition, as well as Design Technology in the realms of Fashion and Textiles or Product Design.

Every year, the examination board presents GCSE students with a diverse array of contextual challenges to explore and conquer. In response, these students undertake a expressive journey of designing, crafting, or preparing products that resonate with their chosen context. Encouraged to engage with clients or target markets, our students channel their problem-solving skills to address real-world issues through their creative expressions.

Within these pages, you will find visual representations of the meticulously crafted items our students have produced. Each creation is accompanied by a succinct yet illuminating description that offers insight into the rationale behind their design choices and the hurdles they overcame. It is important to acknowledge that the process of creation demanded countless hours of work.

This amalgamation of perseverance and enthusiasm underscores the commitment of both our diligent students and dedicated staff members.

Regrettably, the confines of this publication prevent us from showcasing the full breadth of the exceptional design and preparatory efforts that accompany this creative journey. Each DT student meticulously records their evolution through an immersive 20 to 50-slide presentation, encapsulating the depth of their dedication.

Whilst Food and Nutrition students complete an NEA report, and skill trails, creating and cooking 3-4 dishes under exam conditions that they modify and take forward for their final menu of 3 dishes, to be cooked within a 3-hour exam period.

Additionally, it’s important to note that a comprehensive examination paper awaits all students at the culmination of this process.

One of the most significant hurdles I faced was achieving a harmonious balance between functionality and visual appeal in my design.

ABBY I developed a product specifically designed to offer dogs shade and relief from the scorching summer sun and heat.

Designing a mechanism that could efficiently clamp around and perfectly fit an umbrella pole posed a significant challenge during the development process.

AHU My task was to meticulously plan, prepare, cook, and present three dishes promoting good bone health by incorporating a rich source of calcium.

In the process, I had to apply a range of techniques, including fish filleting, chicken portioning, gelatine use, advanced knife skills, breading and shallow frying, and the art of marinading and tenderising.

My greatest challenge was maintaining a brisk pace while ensuring precision and excellence throughout the cooking process.

AIDANA In my quest to create dishes that bolster bone health with calcium-rich ingredients, I had to tackle tasks like chicken portioning, pasta dough creation, prawn deshelling, cinnamon roll dough preparation, ricotta cheese setting, raspberry coulis crafting, and the art of making a rich gravy sauce.

Not without its challenges, the assignment also needed me to attempt dense duchess potato piping, rescuing a near-calamity with a dash of milk, averting a caramel sauce crisis, and deftly handling a cinnamon roll dough overflow, swiftly avoiding any mess.

Throughout the development process, I tackled various challenges by employing a wide array of innovative techniques to construct this creation.

Monkey sightings in Vale do Paraíso have been decreasing due to an overall decrease in population. The product will have attracting monkeys into the area as the priority and aim.

ARVI My objective was to develop a product that could assist individuals in conquering their messiness.

This distinctive item was meticulously tailored to suit the specific needs of the client.

My client wanted me to design a product that is safe for monkeys and the environment that provides entertainment in the form of toys as well as food and water.

It was challenging to research existing products as there is not much out there that currently provides a solution to this problem.

However, the most significant hurdle I encountered during the creation process revolved around crafting the intricate joints that were vital to the product's functionality and uniqueness.

The inspiration for my product and design came from my grandad's need for additional nesting space for his pigeons.

While the concept may not be entirely unique, it offers remarkable functionality and fulfils its purpose effectively.

The task of marking out the wood accurately proved to be quite time-consuming.

The most challenging aspect of the entire process was maintaining my focus and sanity while ensuring precise measurements down to the millimetre.

CEM My objective was to create a convenient and versatile tool for dog owners, aiming to simplify their lives.

What sets my idea apart is the incorporation of multiple components within the dog leash, including a built-in flashlight.

Additionally, I ensured the leash could fold, making it highly portable.

The most significant challenge I faced was designing a compact product that would be easily portable and user-friendly. Through careful consideration and innovative design, I successfully overcame this hurdle.

While time management posed a challenge towards the end of the practical, my determination prevailed, culminating in dishes I was proud to serve.

I undertook the task of creating a distinctive Australian souvenir, with the unique feature of offering Australia maps in various formats for sale.

ELSPETH The objective was to design a prototype addressing the mobility and stability issues of our 79-year-old client, who faced challenges due to a Trendelenburg gait (muscle weakness) and arthritis.

My innovative concept allows customers to choose between a framed wall-hanging version and a refrigerator magnet design.

The design was inspired by a shopping trolley, and special attention was given to the size of handles and movable parts to accommodate her arthritis-affected hands.

The product aimed to assist her in carrying groceries while walking and provide a comfortable seating option.

My primary hurdle during this endeavour was mastering the intricacies of laser cutting and engraving settings to achieve a top-notch, high-quality finish.

The major challenge was to create a functional yet lightweight product that could support her weight during both pushing and sitting activities.

GIANG SON My task was to create a souvenir for tourists that serves a practical purpose. I embarked on extensive research, aiming to offer a unique approach since souvenirs are traditionally decorative rather than functional.

To ensure the longevity of my product, I selected a durable wood variant but was prone to cracking.

Handling this material requires great care and precision to deliver a highquality end product

To enhance usability, I integrated innovative features like a smart cable management system and laptop cooling.

The desk features a sleek tempered glass surface on a minimalistic welded steel frame, providing stability without taking up much space.

Below, there are carefully dimensioned drawers for easy access and storage of work essentials.

The desk also includes thoughtfully integrated RGB lighting for a pleasant workspace ambiance.

Safety was a priority, with softclosing hinges and slides to prevent accidents.

The desk's modular design allows for easy assembly and disassembly, and a dismantling system enables effortless transportation. Despite the challenge of a smaller footprint, I am confident that my creation achieves a perfect balance of functionality, aesthetics, and ergonomics, offering a stylish and practical workspace for those with limited home office space.

By infusing both functionality and aesthetic appeal into my souvenir design, I aimed to provide tourists with a meaningful and useful memento of their travels.

The task was to develop a versatile product suitable for both studying and working from home, with a focus on everyday usability.

HARRY I was tasked with creating a wine/spirit storage unit for my parents that would strike the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Careful attention to detail resulted in a product that provides practicality and convenience for home-based learners and professionals, contributing to a productive and comfortable environment.

The main challenge was ensuring precise measurements and seamless integration of components.

As with many projects, managing time effectively proved to be the most significant challenge throughout the process.

The design of the leotard takes into account factors like periods, sweat, and other challenges older gymnasts may encounter during training.

The primary challenge I faced was in the actual construction of the leotard.

I encountered difficulty while crafting certain aspects and rectifying any mistakes in this process proved to be particularly demanding.

Recognising the scarcity of comfortable leotard options, I set out to create an inclusive and innovative solution.

The most significant hurdle during the development process revolved around crafting a solution that would empower clients to easily adjust the resistance of the exercise bike to match their unique physical capabilities.

The distinguishing characteristic of this piece lies in its capacity to enable users to exercise seamlessly while sitting at their study desk.

The inspiration for my design sprang from the dearth of quality souvenirs in Iceland. Determined to create something truly special, I conceptualised a unique stool that embodies the essence of that country.

The design and production processes flowed smoothly, but the primary hurdle I encountered was the initial ideation phase.

Generating the innovative concept that would capture the spirit of Iceland in a practical and artistic way proved to be the main challenge.

The development of the folding arms presented a formidable challenge. I invested considerable effort in devising various approaches to ensure smooth and flawless folding functionality.

Despite my best efforts, the final prototype did not achieve complete closure for the arms. Nevertheless, this experience is an integral part of the design process, allowing me to engage in constructive Design Thinking (DT) practices. I can now reassess the situation, tackle new challenges, and refine my product further.

To overcome this challenge, I made a very detailed time plan, and I chose skills that I would feel comfortable carrying out. I tried to stay organised during the process and I also memorised most of the time plan to save time.

OSCAR The primary objective behind creating this piece was to prevent dog hair from clogging the drain.

What sets this piece apart is its innovative two-layer filtration system, which significantly enhances its ability to effectively trap dog hairs.

Additionally, its ease of mobility adds to its convenience

Throughout the development process, my primary hurdle entailed striking the perfect balance between minimalistic design and utmost user-friendliness.

However, during the development process, I encountered a major challenge when the product was on the verge of completion it would break unexpectedly.

This setback compelled me to start the design from scratch to ensure a robust and reliable final product.

POLINA Given the brief to create dishes that promote strong bones through calcium-rich ingredients, I presented three courses.

I needed to make use of multiple pieces of equipment, master knife techniques, dough making, and the efficient use of raising agents.

I had to employ presentation skills, pasta making, portioning a chicken, and sauce making.

Managing time constraints was my main challenge but a well-crafted schedule helped overcome this, along with seamlessly dovetailing tasks throughout the three-hour practical.

Amidst the challenges of our practical exam, I had to redo the mayo three times because I had the wrong mustard and used the wrong method. In the end, it was finally perfect.
