many programs, one home The Health and Human Sciences Building at Purdue University combines six different educational departments in the health sciences with clinics, labs and the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The diverse number of users in the building opens the door for the various departments to collaborate. It reflects the team-based approach to wellness that is found in the hospitals, clinics and medical centers where these students will one day work.

An interprofessional learning environment better prepares students for their future. It is also an operationally efficient facility solution for the university.

interprofessional education This trend in education brings two or more areas of study together so students can learn from and about each other. The objective is to achieve a collaborative practice that benefits students by replicating real world scenarios.

The design of interprofessional buildings, like Purdue’s Health and Human Sciences Building, emphasizes multi-departmental collaboration. This allows the departments, previously spread across Purdue’s campus, to have the opportunity to come together to maximize existing synergies and create new opportunities for collaboration.

DEFINITION Interprofessional education is the active engagement of students from various healthcare disciplines to improve academic collaboration and the quality of care.

GOAL The most common goals of interprofessional healthcare education programs are: improved patient outcomes, increased appreciation for clinical peers and better preparation for the healthcare workplace.

the new College of Health and Human Sciences, while the collaborative and interdisciplinary design produces operational efficiencies for the university.

Prior to the creation of the new HHS Building, Purdue’s allied health programs were scattered across different facilities on campus.

identifying synergies To create spaces that intentionally encourage collaboration, it is important to understand how users interact. The design team looked closely at common areas of study, research and practice. It wasn’t surprising to find synergies among the department’s programs, but it was enlightening to discover the amount of collaboration already happening. Bringing these programs together sets up even more opportunities for discovery.

The building’s design evolved as the project team gained a better understanding of the users needs and goals. For example, the initial layout linked audiology research with the audiology clinic and speech research with the speech clinic.

After reviewing with the users and to better enable an interprofessional approach, it was determined that the most efficient layout was to link research disciplines with other research areas and clinic space with other clinic space.

A

Interprofessional synergies are divided into three major areas: Research, Academic and Clinical. Collaborative research is happening in the labs and through interdisciplinary research centers. Clinical programs feature patient exam rooms with support space for treatment and diagnosis. Academic synergies are based on opportunities for shared curriculum for multiple programs. Taking all areas into account, the Purdue and BSA LifeStructures team discovered at least a dozen examples of cross-collaboration amongst students, patients, researchers and faculty.

The second floor balances clinics in the speech, language and hearing sciences with clinics for psychological sciences and audiology. This floor also features a mix of instructional and research space and is home to the IU School of Medicine at Lafayette.
