Our clients had a great year in 2012. Some were recognized by national news outlets for delivering exemplary healthcare services, others for providing unparalleled learning opportunities to students, and still others for their groundbreaking medical discoveries that improve the lives of people all over the world.

But why am I using this space to talk about our clients’ successes rather than our own? Because at BSA LifeStructures, we know our growth is linked to the triumphs of our clients and our long-term success will come from helping clients like you achieve their goals. As such, we take a certain pride in your accomplishments.

The value of this philosophy has been supported by our 2012 growth. Over the past year, we not only added 27 employees, we also opened our fourth office location, in Austin, Texas. Austin gives us an ideal base from which to serve new clients in Texas and throughout the Southwest. We look forward to developing new relationships and having the opportunity to apply LifeStructures metrics and our trademarked evidence-based design to helping even more clients have measurable outcomes in hospitals, learning environments and research facilities.

While some of our recent work is highlighted in this publication, it only tells part of a larger story that revolves around creating inspired solutions that improve lives. And that larger story is built on the belief that great opportunities and great projects come from working with great clients. As such, we know our success is directly related to the valued partnerships we have forged over 36 years and the relationships that help us create value through innovative design.

Innovation that redefines healing The Good Samaritan Regional Health Center brings updated and comprehensive medical care to the Mt. Vernon, Illinois, community. The 134-bed acute care facility has reduced the distance of the patient beds to the bathrooms, added lifts to most patient rooms and equipped the caregiver stations with advanced call systems for efficient communication. These innovative features improve patient safety and increase caregiver response time.

Projects in 2012

Alliance influences collaboration on life enhancing oncology practices The Siteman Cancer Center at South County features the combined cancer-related programs of Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The medical oncology facility includes 28 treatment bays with space for family and visitors.

The design incorporates elements that improve patient comfort and introduces a calming atmosphere that is conducive to healing.

BSA LifeStructures’ first Chicago high-rise project provides much needed physician office space for Swedish Covenant Hospital with a new eight-story medical office building. The outpatient building houses up to 30 new doctors’ offices, a surgery center, a pharmacy and first floor retail space. The building is designed to achieve LEED Certification.

Filtered fume hoods create an energy efficient and cost effective solution

At forty years old, the chemistry labs in Gallahue Hall needed a renovation to modernize the learning environment, improve indoor air quality and reduce operating costs. The labs offered extremely limited space for HVAC expansion and the project had to be finished before students

Overall, the fume hoods achieved four main outcomes:

returned for the fall semester. The use of filtered fume hoods cut construction time by three months and offered a $51,220 reduction in yearly operating costs versus traditional hoods.

FEMA Best Practice Flood Design Protects Hospital and Patients

How LifeStructures are Improving Lives Projects in 2012

BSA LifeStructures designed a passive flood gate system that removes the need for power or human interaction to raise the flood gate. The wall is composed of a series of flood gates that line each pedestrian and vehicular entrance point into the hospital. The water’s buoyancy will trigger the flood gates to protect the hospital. The new flood wall system was designed to protect the hospital from future flood events similar to the 2008 flood that shut the hospital down for four months and resulted in $171 million in damages to the hospital.

Promoting an interprofessional learning environment The Health and Human Sciences facility combines all programs of the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences with other clinical facilities associated with the College of Health and Human Sciences and the Indiana University School of Medicine – Lafayette. The collaborative and interdisciplinary design of the building creates a learning environment that replicates trends in the healthcare industry. The building features at least a dozen examples of cross-pollination amongst students, patients, researchers and faculty.
