Carve is a project demonstrating how bringing natural light into previously enclosed spaces can benefit the building and its users in many ways. By using corridor shaped thresholds to inject the light deeper into the building, the user feels less enveloped and has more of a visual connection to outside. These interventions, forms, and wayfinding throughout the building allows the user to want to spend extended periods of time in the space and give a sense of the passing of time.

DAAP is known to be a very confusing building. Therefore I want there to be a more visual connection between indoors and outdoors so that you do not feel as trapped inside when navigating the building. The sun passing through the openings in the building throughout the day allow for the user to not only perceive time passing, but can create a more relaxing and pleasant environment. The nature and carved out elements of the building could also serve as landmarks throughout DAAP for easier wayfinding. Being exposed to daylighting and natural elements can also reduce stress, create a more positive working environment, and improve concentration.

A series of sketch models were made to show different lighting conditions and techniques that could potentially be implemented throughout DAAP. These conditions were derived from a verb list as follows:

grandstair Using corridor shaped thresholds to carve into the building, this allows for light to penetrate deeper into the space through a highly circulated pin up space, the grandstair. Due to this space being such a focal point of the DAAP building, the impact of carving open this portion of the building will have a ripple effect and impact multiple other points throughout the building as well. This will not make the grand stair more of a pleasureable experience, but it also will allow for more pin up and work spaces for students to occupy and get to be exposed to natural light while doing so. These extra spaces not only allow for extensions off of the grand stair, but do not interrupt the flow of circulation as it gets very congested currently when there is a large critique.

Atlier Alter Architects Yingliang Stone Natural History Museum Located in Xiamen China, this natural hisory museum represents a crystalline structure and holds numerous fossils. One of the biggest challenges in this space was the direct sunlight coming into the atrium space. There are three initial crystalloids in the strium spaces that carry thr language throughout the rest of the building. The simplicity allows for the spatial, dimensional, and daylighting experience to speak for itself.

The lighting effect is supposed to give it a cave-like quality and create an appropriate environment to exhibit archaic fossils.

Pool Leber Architekten & Bleckmann Krys Architekten Kult Located in the town of Vreden, Germany, this museum extends the small scale surrounding housing which creates the towns edge. The exterior is clad in local bricks that blend in with the neutral surroundings and slightly vary in shade. The inside however, reveals a more raw concrete and timber texture with added yellow accents throughout the building. The atrium space allows for a lot of lighting to pour in and diffuse throughout the museum. With large openings along the perimeter of the building which highlights specific views to the medieval port, the towns teo churches, and the rest of the Vreden skyline.

Sverre Fehn Nordic Pavilion in Venice The Nordic Pavilion inverts the depiction of Nordic architectural traditions using slender concrete instead of heavy timber beams. Rather than creating a closed space to shut the elements out, the architect opted for a complete removal of two of the four boundary walls. Fehn designed the roof to be open to the sky above and control exactly how much rain would fall into the space. The space was ochestrated to that of the context surrounding it and therefore creating a new environment in relation to the topography of the site.

Steven Holl CIFI Headquarters Located in Bejing, this building uses carved out geometries of the building to allow in varying qualities of light into the space. The north light provides a soft dilluted light to the interior and upper floors. On the south facade, the cuts in the facade bring light into the offices and retail spaces below. The exterior is a concrete structure that doesn’t distract from the light pouring in.
