FONTANA LAKE AND DAM

Fontana Lake has been called the best-kept secret in the North Carolina Mountains. The 29-mile long, 11,700-acre lake has more than 240 miles of shoreline, and more than 90% of the land around the lake is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or the US Forest Service. This abundance of public land and unspoiled wilderness ensures pristine lake and mountain views for generations to come.

There are plenty of access points to explore Fontana Lake. Several public boat ramps are available for launching your own boat, paddleboard, or kayak, or you can reach out to a local outfitter and rent the equipment. For a full-service experience, visitors can utilize one of our knowledgeable guides who will arrange the entire

trip for you including sunset cruises, fishing trips, camping trips and access to historic areas of the park like Hazel Creek and Eagle Creek, as well as the option to rent a pontoon boat from one of our local marinas. The Fingerlake Day Use Area is open during the summer months and includes a small park with picnic tables, public restrooms and a primitive swimming area. At 480 feet, the Fontana Dam impounds Fontana Lake and produces hydroelectric power. This engineering marvel has historical significance to the residents of Swain County. In response to an urgent need for electric power during World War II; many residents gave up their private land to the Federal Government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam, where visitors can walk or drive across the dam or stop by the visitor center from May through October.

All Good Things are Wild & Free

THE NANTAHALA GORGE

The Gorge is the epicenter of outdoor adventure. Here, people of all ages can enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking, zip lining, fishing, biking, jeep tours, horseback riding, hiking and gem mining. The 200,000 paddlers who come every year make the Nantahala River one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the Southeast. With mostly Class I and II rapids, it is a great place for family fun; rafters as young as 6 years of age (or 60 pounds) can raft on the Nantahala River. A drive on U.S. 19 through the Gorge is worthwhile for scenic views, restaurants, picnic areas, and pull-offs to watch the rafters on the rushing waters.

28 EXPLOREBRYSONCITY.COM

The Nantahala River is also a popular fishing spot, especially when it comes to fly fishing. Trout Unlimited named the river one of 100 best trout streams in America. The Upper Nantahala is stocked and designated as a delayed harvest trout stream. Although the Lower Nantahala is supported by a delayed harvest stream, it’s not designated as delayed harvest, meaning folks do not need to follow delayed harvest fishing rules when fishing the Lower Nantahala and can use whatever lures or baits one likes.

Hiking in the Nantahala Gorge and surrounding Nantahala National Forest offers terrific trails and varied challenge levels. The best part? All trails welcome dogs, unlike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where pets are not allowed, so bring along your furry companion! Favorite insider hiking trails include:

• Appalachian Trail

• Bartram Trail

• Findley Falls

• Flint Ridge Trail

• Nantahala Bikeway

• Wesser Creek Trail

• Wesser Bald Fire Tower

Float Along and Breathe Deep

Experience the thrill of riding a tube down the crystal-clear waters in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Deep Creek, just outside of Bryson City and the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee are two of the purest rivers in the Smoky Mountains where you can enjoy a tube ride that’s part rushing rapids, and part lazy ripples and swimming holes.

DEEP CREEK

Tubing companies generally operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day; however, Deep Creek tubing can begin earlier in May and continue after Labor Day if the weather is warm. Rental companies are located on West Deep Creek Road, just outside of Bryson City, near the park entrance. Light-weight inflatables with seats can be rented for the day. From the parking lot at the Deep Creek trailhead, carry your tube upstream on the Deep Creek trail and look for put-ins.

OCONALUFTEE

Only 20 minutes from Bryson City, the Oconaluftee River originates in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and flows through downtown Cherokee. Tube rental companies in Cherokee transport you and your tube to a put-in spot and pick you up at the end of your ride.

Life is a Highway…

Enjoy a drive along the area’s many roads and byways. After a relaxing ride, get out of your car or off your motorcycle and experience some adventure! Adventure rental companies offer motorcycles, Slingshots, Razors, and other motorized vehicles for rent.

ROAD TO NOWHERE

Labeled Lakeview Drive on a map, this scenic ride will take you six miles into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to a dead-end road and the infamous “Road to Nowhere Tunnel”. You can park here and walk through the tunnel which adjoins many hiking trails within the Park. Lakeview Drive is easily accessible by motor vehicle or enjoy it via bike.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

It is no wonder the Smokies is the most visited national park in the country. Starting in Cherokee, you can drive the 35 miles to Gatlinburg along U.S. 441 and stop along the way for numerous trailheads and scenic overlooks. Cades Cove is also accessible via Little River Road near the Sugarlands Visitor Center.

TAIL OF THE DRAGON

US 129 is known worldwide among motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, especially the 11-mile section with 318 continuous curves. The tight curves come one after another, so take caution.

68 EXPLOREBRYSONCITY.COM

HELLBENDER 28

Also popular with motorcyclists, the Hellbender 28 winds from Stecoah to Deals Gap. It’s a beautiful byway that travels alongside Fontana Lake. At about the midway point, you will come to the Historic Fontana Village and the breathtaking Fontana Dam.

NANTAHALA GORGE

Traveling US 19 through the Nantahala Gorge is a stunning drive that follows the Nantahala River and offers numerous pull-offs, picnic spots and river access points. At the western end of the gorge, turn onto Wayah Road and follow the river up Nantahala Mountain to view spectacular cascades

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

America’s Favorite Drive is perhaps the most well-known scenic byway in the country. Swain County is lucky to have several entrances within an easy drive. Explore the curvy roads or park your vehicle and enjoy a picnic, hike or bike ride.

CHEROHALA SKYWAY

This breathtaking 51-mile stretch of road stretches from Hwy 143 in Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN, traveling the Cherokee and Nantahala National forests. This byway offers sweeping mountain views and dramatic elevation changes.

WATERFALL LOOP

If you’re on the hunt for waterfalls, this is the loop for you. Travel from Bryson City to the Deep Creek area to Cherokee, Franklin, Cashiers and Highlands. Be sure to save an entire day or two for this excursion. There are many cascades and falls to view along the way.
