camping trips and access to historic areas of the park like Hazel Creek and Eagle Creek, as well as the option to rent a pontoon boat from one of our local marinas. The Fingerlake Day Use Area is open during the summer months and includes a small park with picnic tables, public restrooms and a primitive swimming area. At 480 feet, the Fontana Dam impounds Fontana Lake and produces hydroelectric power. This engineering marvel has historical significance to the residents of Swain County. In response to an urgent need for electric power during World War II; many residents gave up their private land to the Federal Government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam, where visitors can walk or drive across the dam or stop by the visitor center from May through October. 23

Here, people of all ages can enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking, zip lining, fishing, biking, jeep tours, horseback riding, hiking and gem mining. The 200,000 paddlers who come every year make the Nantahala River one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the Southeast. With mostly Class I and II rapids, it is a great place for family fun; rafters as young as 6 years of age (or 60 pounds) can raft on the Nantahala River. A drive on U.S. 19 through the Gorge is worthwhile for scenic views, restaurants, picnic areas, and pull-offs to watch the rafters on the rushing waters. ExploreBrysonCity.com

xperience the thrill of riding a tube down the crystalclear waters of two mountain streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Deep Creek, just outside of Bryson City and the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee are two of the purest rivers in the Smoky Mountains where you can enjoy a tube ride that’s part rushing rapids, and part lazy ripples and swimming holes. Tubing companies generally operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day; however, Deep Creek tubing can begin earlier in May and continue after Labor Day if the weather is warm.
DEEP CREEK Tube rental companies are located on West Deep Creek Road, just outside of Bryson City, near the National Park entrance. Light-weight inflatables with seats can be rented for the day. From the parking lot at the Deep Creek trailhead, carry your tube upstream on the Deep Creek trail and look for put-ins along the creek.
OCONALUFTEE RIVER Only 20 minutes from Bryson City, the Oconaluftee River originates in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and flows through downtown Cherokee. Tube rental companies in Cherokee transport you and your tube to a put-in spot and pick you up at the end of your ride. 28

Rich Appalachian
History While our mountains are ancient, Swain County is also rich in cultural, environmental and social history. One of our most famed stories surrounds the Road to Nowhere. In the 1930s and 1940s, Swain County gave up the majority of its private land to the federal government for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Fontana Lake, which is a reservoir for Fontana Dam. Fontana Dam was built during World War II by the Tennessee Valley Authority to produce electricity for the ALCOA aluminum plants in Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Manhattan Project. This combination of events forced hundreds of people to leave the small Smoky Mountain communities they’d called home for generations. Additionally, the old Highway 288 was submerged deep beneath the waters of Fontana Lake. The government ensured the folks that they would build a new road along the north shore of Fontana Lake, from Bryson City to Fontana Dam. But environmental concerns and budget issues left the road only partly built. Swain County citizens have coined the unfinished Lakeview Drive as the “Road to Nowhere.” During summertime weekends, the Park Service ferries groups of Swain residents across Fontana Lake to visit the old family cemeteries for Decoration Days and family reunions. Other historical highlights of Swain County include the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, Heritage Museum, Fly Fishing Museum and the Appalachian Rivers Aquarium. 44
