Room + Street Tasked with crafting a 17-room hotel in downtown Blacksburg, VA for a semester-long project, the architectural promenade from the street to the room was central, marked by a series of chimneys that are interacted with at different scales. These chimneys connect guests from the street, guiding them through the lobby, hallways, and to the room.

A thin 36’x126’ maximum building footprint with program requirements like a bar, parlor, specific bedroom types, and rooftop pool led to explorations of different structural systems and material implications.

The project is laid out from the street and works towards the room.

Main Street Elevation An operable wood shutter allows for guests to control privacy, while defining each floor level and bringing a scale to the building that echoes those around it

At street level, a patio anchored by a fireplace opens up to the sidewalk, creating an inviting spot for all to sit and enjoy

Fourth floor rooms are setback with a rooftop pool and bar to reduce the appearance on Main Street

Bike Hub The task of the week-long Third Year Competition was crafting an architectural position in the form of a bike hub situated on the hill behind Cowgill Hall.

It was to include a bike storage and repair shop, lockers and restrooms, and a cafe. Additionally, it should serve as a link for future developments on the campus of Virginia Tech.

A pathway meanders through the bicycle storage, carving a promenade through the heavy concrete structure. This creates an atrium and continues up to campus. A delicate timber framing system sits atop the walls, heightening the ceilings, and providing warm light in the shaded site as the roof mimics the sloping topography. Large, pistoned powered windows connect the spaces with dominant axes as well as the mechanics of the bicycle.

Corridor Located in the Downtown Mall of Charlottesville, VA the weekend-long AIA Virginia Prize competition delved into the live/work social dynamics emerging from the digitization of professions. This artist residency, workspace, and gallery was to accommodate a range of art manifestations, workshops, and events for the community and include living spaces for two artists with a kitchen, a bathroom, storage, and sleeping areas.

A perforated brick facade reveals galleries on Main Street, connecting to a courtyard on the 3rd Street facade. A meandering corridor guides visitors through galleries, workshops, and educational spaces. Varying building heights and the corridor allow for natural ventilation and diverse lighting.

Second-story balconies, rooftops, and catwalks provide unique perspectives, while mechanical shutters and perforated brick control privacy and daylighting. Both interior and exterior exhibits boast large walls and movable displays for versatile viewing.

Received Honorable Mention at school-wide judging with entries ranging from third-year to graduate

1/2” = 1’ scale model The similar color of the Baltic Birch plywood and Basswood sticks enables a focus on trusses and the room’s form rather than materials. Sunlight on the trusses cast shadows on the council room floor, offering a glimpse of what Säynätsalo Town Hall may have looked like for a brief moment during construction

Säynätsalo Town Hall Research Grant Together with Lilly Church, Kasey Harrill, and Nick Giggenbach architectural research was conducted on Alvar Aalto’s butterfly trusses in the Säynätsalo Town Hall council chamber. The project involved hands-on fabrication to visualize the truss structure, with prior research determining size, composition, and structural properties. A large dataset of original drawings and sketches was collected and analyzed to reveal unknown elements along with a reevaluation of structural demands and assembly processes. The fabrication process served as an opportunity to learn new skills and employ unique construction methods. The trusses in Säynätsalo Town Hall are able to support the roof structure through the angled struts that fan out from either side of the central beams.

Domestic Mannerism Based in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, the semester abroad focused on contemporary architecture across Europe, sparking a studio exploration of a polemical idea through iterative plans. The final iteration led to a villa developed prioritizing the form over the function, challenging conventions of traditional single-family homes in America. This final iteration delved into using accessible materials and methods in unconventional ways. Traditional interior decoration became pivotal in expressing room usage, resulting in ornate detailing. The hyperfragmentaton of the cubes produces a folded, crumpled wall which is created with wood stud framing and covered in shelves, wainscoting, beadboard, picture frames, and mirrors.

Titled “Domestic Mannerism,” the villa consists of two units formed by overlapping cubes, resulting in a string of fragmented domestic rooms.

Room + Garden Creating interaction between students and nature through a connecting line moving one from a path, along the reflecting pool, through the room, and down to the creek.

Tasked with creating a room to hold only two chairs and a table, an extended reflecting pool draws one to the entrance where they can either enter the room or continue down to the creek.

Once entering the room, warm light fills the space from the separation of the walls and roof. A large piston-powered door frames the creek and allows one to reconnect with the surrounding sounds when opened.

Sketches + Photography During a semester based in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, 120+ buildings across nine countries were visited. Contemporary architecture was particularly highlighted including the work of OMA, SANAA, De Vylder Vinck Taillieu, Office KDGVS, Lacaton and Vassal, MVRDV, Zaha Hadid, Caruso St John, Peter Zumthor, Valerio Olgiati, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Flores and Prates, Enric Miralles / EMBT, and Herzog and de Meuron.
