Emily Socha ’16

A self-proclaimed “supply chain nerd,” Socha made Bryant her first choice after a conversation with Associate Professor of Marketing Michael Gravier at an Open House event on campus.

After 12 years as an Air Force logistics officer, Gravier earned his Ph. D. in a top logistics program and now teaches supply chain and marketing.

Socha was looking for an internship at an organization that had a complex supply chain, and the aerospace industry was just the right fit. When she interviewed for an internship at United Technologies Aerospace Systems, her GSCM major set her apart from other candidates.

“Supply chain management is a growing and extremely important function in all companies, and they are looking for talent,” she says. “My two majors, Applied Analytics and GSCM, went hand-in-hand.”

“In our data-driven world, companies want people who can understand, manipulate, and draw conclusions from large data.

Having the data is important, but knowing what to do with it is key.”

As a Bryant senior, Socha was one of the few college students in the country to earn the prestigious 2015 R. Gene Richter Scholarship award, granted by the Institute for Supply Chain Management to only eight undergraduates from thousands who applied.

“Education is learning from experience, leading teams, working with companies, networking with professionals, and teaching yourself something new. My dream job is to help a company’s supply chain become more sustainable, eco-friendly, and beneficial to all of the communities that the supply chain touches,” she says.

“Educational systems put so much emphasis on exam performance to tell us how smart or successful we are,” notes Logan, a published author and self-professed multimedia fanatic.

“The content we learn is important, but it’s the way we learn the content that is starting to change. Post-secondary institutions should focus more on hands-on experience rather than test-taking – and that is exactly what Bryant is doing.”

As a student, Logan’s courses moved away from written exams and focused on team projects, case studies, and real-world experiences. He further developed his skill set through many student leadership opportunities, including his role as lead editor for The Archway, Bryant’s student newspaper, and as video producer for Bryant’s international study abroad program, among many others.

During Logan’s sophomore year, he took advantage of a Sophomore International Experience (SIE) trip to Rome and – as proof of the broadening effects of study abroad – decided that his dream job was to travel the world and produce promotional videos.

After graduation, he accepted a position with the New England Patriots, creating digital content.

“I’m taking pictures of the players, interviewing them, and posting content to Patriots.com.

One of the main reasons they hired me is because they loved my entrepreneurial background and the hands-on learning curriculum, such as the IDEA program. During my interview we talked about the Academic Innovation Center and I told them about my experiences at Bryant – they loved all of it!”

Bailey Cornell ’15

For six consecutive years, Fortune magazine has recognized Google as the nation’s the top organization to work for. More than two million people apply for positions at the company each year, and Cornell earned one of those coveted positions.

At Google, strong academic and work performance are simply expected, says Cornell. It was her volunteer work, international experiences such as study abroad, and extracurricular activities in the Bryant Outdoor Adventure Club and the Media Production Club that set her apart and helped her gain leadership skills.

“Being well-rounded and having experiences outside of the classroom are key to standing out,” says the Communication major, who interned at a local television station.

“Bryant also gives students plenty of opportunities to get involved and become leaders. These experiences and skills can help you stand out and make a difference in whatever you are passionate about.”

What helped interviewers get to know Cornell as a person was her Honors Capstone Project, a study about money and happiness based on disparate age groups. “Completing the capstone was a lot of work,

but it really did set me apart in the interview process,” she says.

“The project came up time and time again, especially because I am so passionate about the topic.”

Cornell works with businesses who advertise with Google on the Web. “What I do is similar to a marketing consultant, so I work on different types of campaigns and strategies to effectively advertise clients’ products or services across Google’s many channels,” she says.

At Bryant, all liberal arts majors minor in business, while business majors minor in liberal arts. “Having a background in business is great no matter what field you are interested in,” says Cornell. “My business minor helps immensely since I work with every kind of business model on marketing strategy. In my position, I am constantly using what I learned.”

“The University is really great at preparing students for the ‘real world’ with a focus on group projects and presentations, which help you gain necessary experience for what’s it’s really like to work with a team on a common goal,” says Cornell.

Emmanuel Balandi ’16

From Nepal to Burkina Faso, Chad to Mauritania, Balandi has lived in several unique places but found his Bryant experience expanded his global perspective even more.

During his first week at Bryant, Balandi participated in 4Mile, a cultural and leadership program designed for first-year international and domestic multicultural students. “It was a great experience where I was able to meet people who were going through the same thing that I was and we learned from one another,” he says.

His first and favorite class was Global Foundations of Business.

He landed his first internship at the University’s Chafee Center for International Business, and loved it because he had opportunities to help real companies with their expansion abroad.

“Through the Archway Investment Fund, I learned about valuation of stocks and companies,” he says. “I worked with Cyberay, a startup firm, to develop a roadmap for the commercialization of their new product. I also worked with Alex and Ani to help them bring their packaging operations in-house.”

As a student, Balandi was involved in many organizations; he started a Model United Nations Club to broaden students’ global acumen through discussions about current events, international issues, politics, foreign policies, and law.

He also served on the Student Senate and Senior Advisory Council, was a Student Ambassador, and was active with Omicron Delta Kappa- the National Honors Leadership Council.

“The best thing about Bryant is that if there is something you want to see get done on campus, you have the resources available to accomplish it,” he says.
