Introducing: data science

The Social Corner SMITHFIELD, RI - Zaryah Guyton ‘17 celebrates receiving her diploma at Bryant’s 154th Commencement in May with 872 of her classmates, family, friends and the entire Bryant Community in which CEO of GE, Jeffrey Immelt delivered the keynote address.

In response to the growing demand for data scientists, this fall Bryant University will launch a Bachelor of Science in Data Science (B.S.D.S) – a program that will prepare students to become highly skilled analysts.

Bryant’s culture of mentoring is a key aspect of the University’s student experience, and an important element of preparing for postgraduate success. Take a look at some of the ways students gain guidance and perspective through the University’s corporate partnerships, world-class faculty and extensive alumni network.

Finding answers

The CVS Women’s Success Network Mentoring Program matches 34 CVS Health leaders with 36 Bryant students in a program open to undergraduates, graduate students, and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies students. Corporate partnerships, matches with faculty, alumni network offer unique advantages.

Three group meetings, held throughout the semester, cover topics that include resume writing, interviewing, and career paths. The heart of the program is the individual relationships students develop with their CVS mentors. Each pairing tailors meetings and discussion topics to meet the student’s needs. “When I think about the great mentors I’ve had over the years, they listen, they give advice, but they never tell you what to do,” says Laurie Hubble-Brown '04 MBA, a Strategic Human Resources Business Partner at CVS Health Corporation. This past spring she mentored Meaghan Mahoney ’19, a Business Administration major concentrating in Human Resources. Mahoney appreciates Hubble-Brown’s experience and her unique understanding of her industry. “Laurie’s definitely helped me explore my options and what will work best for me,” she says. “She’s helping me understand what’s worked for her and what didn’t work and what that means for me going forward.”

The College of Arts and Sciences Mentor Match program connects students and faculty who have common interests and experiences. The program provides an opportunity for students in the liberal arts and sciences to learn from faculty mentors who have expertise in one of three interdisciplinary areas: education, health care, or environmental studies. “The Mentor Match Program is one of the unique advantages that Bryant’s students have access to,” says Professor of Applied Psychology Joseph Trunzo, Ph.D., co-chair of the health care section of the program. “It gives them a greater breadth of knowledge and experience through meeting with faculty from a wide range of departments, not just the ones from their major course of study.”

Bryant’s Alumnifire network also provides an easy path for students to find professional mentors among the University’s accomplished alumni. A grassroots networking community, Alumnifire highlights the LinkedIn profiles of Bryant alumni who are eager to engage and network with students and other alumni. More than 600 alumni have signed up for the service and have been matched with more than 100 current students. “Alumnifire helps open Bryant’s alumni network to students and aids them in finding the career guidance they need to become industry-leading professionals,” says Robin Warde P’17, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement.

“Our alums are always eager to help students find their path. Alumnifire offers them another way to make that possible.”

Introducing: Bryant's first Fulbright scholar!

Tiffany Venmahavong ’17, the daughter of Laotian immigrants and the first member of her family to go to college, has been named a Fulbright Scholar. Awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Scholarship, Venmahavong will have the opportunity to teach children in her parents’ home country of Laos and begin a multi-lingual media club that would promote language immersion and media literacy.

“Through the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Scholarship I believe I can make an important contribution to the development of Southeast Asian communities,” Venmahavong, an International Business major from Woonsocket, RI, says. Her motivation to pursue the Fulbright stems from a visit to her parents’ homeland at the age of 12, where she witnessed the hardships faced by children her own age.

At Bryant, Venmahavong has been a member of the Senior Advisory Council, the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, the Phi Sigma Iota Language Honors Society, and the University’s Multicultural Student Organization. In 2015, she studied abroad at East China Normal University in Shanghai.

“Tiffany is an example of the incredible students at Bryant,” says Bryant Provost Glenn M. Sulmasy. “We are all quite proud of her achievements and know that she will serve as an example for future Fulbright scholars." Throughout the Fulbright selection process Venmahavong was supported by the Bryant Scholars program, which provides guidance for undergraduates and recent graduates applying for fellowships. Congratulations Tiffany!
