Jessica Fleet ‘17: Fearless on and off the field Major: Politics and Law Minor: Management Hometown: Londonderry, NH Path: Criminal Defense Attorney

When Jessica Fleet started her college search, she looked at schools where she could major in politics and law. After taking a Bryant tour with a future field hockey teammate, she got that “feeling” that everyone talks about. “I loved the idea of pairing my politics and law concentration with a business minor. But the primary reason I chose Bryant is because of its small, tight-knit community. I knew I would be able to stand out academically and make a difference on campus.”

Fleet, an Honors Program member, thrives on challenge, so she picked management as her business minor. “I saw the direct correlation between the skills and information I would learn in management classes and my politics and law classes,” she says. She plans to add a second minor, psychology, which she would have studied had she attended a college that offered strictly liberal arts.

One of Fleet’s most memorable experiences occurred in her freshman year during the first Division I Field Hockey game of the season - when she saw her name in the starting lineup. “I ran out of the locker room, called my mom, and told her I had to quit because I couldn’t and shouldn’t start,” she says. “I got my very first goal in that game and helped my team win its season opener.”

Among her many co-curricular activities at Bryant, she is a student Ambassador and serves as the Advocacy Chair for Relay for Life and for Colleges Against Cancer.

Bryant Builds

An Evening with Jack and suzy Suzy and Jack Welch spoke at Bryant as part of the President’s Trustee Speaker Series. The conversation with Jack and Suzy Welch touched on globalization, leadership, and adaptation. Former General Electric CEO and Chairman Jack Welch and his wife, best-selling author Suzy Welch, joined Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley Monday afternoon for a wideranging conversation about the keys to success.

Bryant Builds is the largest and most transformative facilities initiative in Bryant history, adding more than 250,000 square feet both at the Smithfield campus and in Zhuhai, China.

The dramatic new facilities for the next generation of innovative leaders are made possible by more than $15 million in leadership gifts to Bryant’s capital campaign, Expanding the World of Opportunity: The Campaign for Bryant’s Bold Future. Bryant has already raised more than $46 million toward the $75-million campaign goal, the largest fundraising effort in the University’s history.

During his 20-year tenure as CEO of GE, Welch re-imagined the company, making decisions that transformed industries from financial services to broadcast media to defense, quintupling revenues, and increasing market capitalization from $14 billion to $410 billion. When he retired from GE in 2001, he had positioned the organization as the most valuable company in the world. Welch, introduced by Machtley as one of the great leaders when it come to business,” praised GE’s recent announcement that it would sell off the majority of its finance and real-estate assets. “Growth is going to be tough to come by in these businesses,” he said. “GE is the only company that remains from the original Dow Jones. The reason it’s there is because of how good it is adapting to change.”

Welch and Suzy Welch, a former editor of the Harvard Business Review, have written a number of books together. Their appearance at Bryant came on the eve of the release of the newest, The Real-Life MBA, a copy of which every student in the audience received.

A chapter in the Welches’ book touches on globalization, and Jack Welch took time during the discussion to laud Bryant’s recently-announced partnership with the Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai to collaboratively educate students on Bryant’s Smithfield campus and in Zhuhai, China.

Under the leadership of President Machtley, the historic Bryant Builds initiative includes: A new entrance, integrated landscape, and point of arrival; A 50,000-square-foot Academic Innovation Center (see rendering at top) to open in fall 2016; A Bulldog Strength and Conditioning Center scheduled to be completed in summer 2015; A 78,000-square-foot Indoor Practice Facility featuring a state-of-the-art indoor turf field with a full 100 yards of turf;  Enhancements to the Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Wellness and Athletic Center, including a Sports Medicine and Training Center;  Bryant University Zhuhai, a joint venture with Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai campus. Bryant’s Chinese partners have invested 100% of the capital for this project.    
