The college is alive with new projects this summer that will enhance the Bryan experience for our students. The library is being renovated to include more study rooms and enhancements to the Academic Success Center. Summer’s Gymnasium will have a new plaza constructed in front of the building, and the tennis courts will be refurbished with a rubberized surface to accommodate additional recreational activities on the courts.

H

erein lies the formula for success for you as alumni and for us as a college. If we are going to see God’s blessing, everything we undertake must be committed to the LORD and align with our mission.

I am so thankful that Bryan’s latest endeavor, a school of engineering, is that which focuses on missional engineering – using the disciplines of engineering as a means to introduce people around the globe to the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Tom Marshall, dean of the Vogel School of Engineering, will oversee two programs within our engineering school, mechanical and civil; and both programs are set to begin this fall with an anticipated class of 20-25 students. Work will begin this summer on constructing engineering facilities on Mercer Hall third floor and in the practice gymnasium.

We are so thankful for Gen. George ’58 and Doris Vogel who have graciously donated funds for beginning the engineering school, and we are delighted that it will be known as the Vogel School of Engineering.

Showers and locker rooms are being added to the Latimer Student Center’s third floor fitness center, and the Education Department will have a new home in the Anderson Annex beginning this fall. Later this year we will begin construction of the Stophel Center, a welcome center for all prospective students, alumni, and visitors, that is named for long-time friends of the college, Glenn and Jackie Stophel.

I hope you will enjoy reading about Drs. Jeff Bruehl and Clark Rose; two special students, Kate Westrick and Stephanie Chavez; and our featured alumni and studentathletes. We also remember two of our most beloved and promising students, Christopher Nitzband and Jon Stone, who died this semester. And we express appreciation to two exceptional and godly faculty members who retired in May, Dr. Beth Impson and Mr. Bernie Belisle.

Thank you for your constant support as you enable us to commit all our ways to the LORD and see God’s gracious hand helping Bryan students succeed.

DR. ADINA SCRUGGS TAKES ON ROLE AS NEW AGS DEAN Over the summer of 2017, Dr. Adina Scruggs was named the new dean of Bryan College’s School of Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS). Dr. Scruggs graduated in 1991 from Bryan with a degree in business administration. She began her teaching career at Bryan in 2008 and has held several leadership positions, including director of the MBA program, business department chair, and Assistant Dean of AGS.

FISHING TEAM WINS 2017 CABELA’S SCHOOL OF THE YEAR For many clubs the Cabela’s School of the Year title is already known to be the most respected title in college fishing because of the work teams and members have to put in. Consistency has been key to the Lions’ success, and it has truly been a team effort with individuals continually stepping up in each tournament.

BRYAN COLLEGE ANGLERS CROWNED BASSMASTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONS The Bryan College fishing team recently added one more accolade to their historic season’s resume: National Champions. “We don’t depend on any single individual, but in each tournament there is a boat that steps up to the plate and delivers,” said Coach Mike Keen. In just the third year of the program’s existence, the Bryan Lions Fishing Program recorded School of the Year and National Championship titles, establishing themselves as a collegiate fishing powerhouse.

BRYAN HOSTS SOLAR ECLIPSE VIEWING EVENT

2017

Hundreds gathered on Bryan College’s campus to view the solar eclipse that featured more than two minutes of totality on Aug. 21, 2017. Guests came from as far away as Virginia and Florida to witness this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dr. Jud Davis and Dr. Lyle Smith gave presentations to guests regarding some of the science behind solar eclipses and what the Bible says about God’s design for the universe. To help further celebrate the momentous day, the college handed out Moon Pies and set up a solar telescope viewing station to view the sun as it was eclipsed by the moon. According to NASA this was the first solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. since 1918.

Well over 300 alumni and friends flooded onto campus for a time of celebration and reminiscence during Bryan College’s Homecoming 2017. During the 2017 Red and Gold Gala several notable alumni were honored, including Alumni of the Year Jake ’59 and Sandy (Schmickl) ’72 Matthes; Young Alumni of the Year R.J. and Lesley (Artois) Smith ’07; and Honorary Alumni of the Year Pat Kinney ’17, Judy Shetter ’17, and Coach John Reeser ’17. In addition, this year the 1975 NCCAA Cross Country Champions and the 1977 NCCAA Soccer Champions were officially inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Recently Bryan alumnus Dr. Don Reed ’63 has officially assumed the role of generosity advisor for the college. Bryan College’s admissions department has officially announced the winner of the Great Commoner Essay Competition: Laurel McLaughlin. The Great Commoner Essay Competition is held as part of the invitationonly Bryan College Scholarship Weekend.

According to the admissions webpage, “Students participating in this competition will receive an essay prompt developed by Bryan College faculty and have two hours to develop and complete their essay response.”

The essay topic is kept secret until writing time comes, making this a true test of skill and clear thinking. And the prize? A fulltuition scholarship to Bryan College.

BRYAN COLLEGE ANNOUNCES VISION TO REALITY 2018-2020 PLANS

JANUARY

On Friday, Dec. 15, new graduates of the School of Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS) and the School of Arts and Sciences celebrated as Bryan College conferred 100 degrees. There were 12 candidates for the Master of Business Administration degree; 2 for the Master of Arts degree; 8 for the Master of Education degree; 76 for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Business Administration degrees; and 2 for the Associate of Science degree.

In addition, 18 August graduates walked that night.

To kick off the new year, the Engage Conference encouraged students to consider the role of the church in today’s increasingly post-Christian society. These sessions were hosted by keynote speaker Greg Darley. Darley spoke about how “in a post-Christian society, our job is still the same” and encouraged students to deeply and practically consider their role in influencing culture for Christ. The method he proposed was not for listeners to view uncertain futures through “mecentered” lenses, but rather through the lens of asking God what He is currently doing in the world and how one can help further those causes: preaching the Gospel, compassion, justice, love, charity, generosity, and so on.

Visitors to Bryan College’s campus will soon be greeted with the sounds of construction and signs for upcoming projects that will showcase the College’s “2018 Making a Difference: Vision to Reality” initiative that will provide new opportunities and benefits for students. These include new softball field lights, new roofing to facilitate energy efficient upgrades, new solar panels, an upgrade of the energy management system, the remodeling of the practice g ym, and construction on Mercer’s third f loor to provide additional classrooms and faculty offices. This also includes construction of the new Stophel Center, renovation of the tennis courts, and a new athletic field house.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM SEES QUICK GROWTH Among several fields of study seeing exciting changes and growth lately, the criminal justice program at Bryan College is growing by leaps and bounds. According to Associate Professor of Criminal Justice John Sterling, the program’s purpose is “promoting realistic and relevant training that will accomplish the mission of the college to train leaders for Christ, and also making available to the law enforcement community people who are well trained, people of character, people with integrity.”

11TH ANNUAL BRYAN OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM DINNER FEATURES LARNELLE HARRIS On April 19 more than 540 alumni and friends of Bryan College attended the eleventh annual Bryan Opportunity Scholarship Program Dinner at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The dinner was hosted by the college and Host Co-Chairs Bob and Nan Coddington and Leighton and Jan LeBoeuf, to raise funds for scholarships for low-income Tennessee students. The donors at this year’s dinner raised an estimated $235,5322, making Bryan College possible for students in the upcoming academic year.

The Bryan College Debate Team brought home the coveted first place award in early April from East Tennessee State University’s Parliamentary Debate Tournament. ETSU’s tournament hosted teams from seven other schools including the University of Virginia and Tennessee Tech.

A recent study found that the economic impact of Bryan College and all related operations totalled $28.6 million for the 20162017 academic year. Bryan College generates annual economic impact from ongoing operations and by capital investments.

“We are fortunate to be a part of such a strong community,” said Bryan College President Stephen Livesay. “This report shows that investment in Bryan College’s success coincides with the success of our area. Bryan continues to grow and develop so that we can help make all facets of our community stronger.”

BRYAN GRADUATES 132 IN COMMENCEMENT 2018 CEREMONIES On May 5, a mild and overcast morning, the Class of 2018 proudly turned their tassels as Bryan College conferred upon them their well-earned degrees.

The morning ceremonies featured Abigail Brown as the senior class commencement speaker. Miss Brown spoke with poise and wit and reflected on the class of 2018’s time at Bryan College.

Also speaking was Dr. Kenneth Hanna, former Bryan College president, who reflected on his time at Bryan College and encouraged the graduates to finish strong.

The Bryan College Enactus team competed at the Enactus United States National Exposition on May 22. The team was awarded second place in its league in the first round of competition, the school’s first time on the podium at the national exposition.

The Bryan College team presented a live multi-media summary of its Global Entrepreneurship Initiative, which focuses on job creation and product innovation in Haiti. Working closely with the college’s Haiti Break for Change Team, Enactus members focused on improving and expanding an existing for-profit business, Haiti Made.

MEET THE PROVOST! Dr. Doug Mann Announced as Bryan College’s New Provost and Vice President of Academics

ryan College has proudly announced the addition of Dr. Douglas Mann ’92 as Provost and Vice President of Academics.

A Bryan College alumnus, Dr. Douglas Mann – who holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia, an M.A. in Christian Thought, Emphases in History and Theology from Trinity International University, and a B.A. in History and Bible from Bryan College – has a long history with Bryan College and looks forward to bringing his extensive experience to his alma mater.

With a career in higher education spanning over two decades, Dr. Mann most recently held the position of Administrative Dean for Graduate Programs, Vice Provost for Graduate Education, and Dean of the Graduate School at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

I am excited to serve the students, faculty, and administration at Bryan as we all seek to further the mission of ‘Educating students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world.’

Additionally, Dr. Mann has extensive experience both in teaching and administrative roles and holds years of senior leadership and planning experience, including key decision-making for academic programs, academic relations, academic budgets and facilities planning, and policy.

“Bryan College has been an important part of both my personal and professional life. My parents met at Bryan. I met my wife, Susi, while a student at Bryan. My own views on the value and place for Christian Higher Education were shaped as a student at Bryan as the faculty and administration poured their lives into my education,” said Dr. Mann. “I am excited to serve the students, faculty, and administration at Bryan as we all seek to further the mission of ‘Educating students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world.’”

As Provost and Vice President of Academics at Bryan College, Dr. Mann will provide leadership and direction for students, faculty, and staff as well as assist with many of the upcoming efforts included in the College’s “2018 Making a Difference: Vision to Reality” initiative.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Mann back to his alma mater as our new Provost and Vice President of Academic here at Bryan,” remarked President Stephen D. Livesay.

“Dr. Mann has significant professional experience in higher education both in teaching and in administration. He knows Bryan well and will be able to quickly adjust to his new role in leading our academic team. But more than all of his qualifications and experience is our shared mission of placing ‘Christ above All.’”

all 2018 hails as a remarkable signpost of God’s faithfulness in Bryan College’s nearlynine-decade history, for this semester the all-new and eagerly anticipated Vogel School of Engineering opens its doors, empowering the college to reach a new breed of Bryan Lion.

The new program bears a distinctively Christ-centered focus, perfectly mirroring the mission of the college in educating students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world. This emphasis is the passion of Dr. Thomas Marshall, M.Div., Ph.D., P.E. – the dean of the new school as well as a professor within it. Having spent much of his career as a registered professional engineer specializing in engineering management of large treatment works operations, Dr. Marshall has served as a municipal utilities director, managed a multi-state engineering firm as its C.O.O., and served as the global technical director for water resources and energy for a large multinational engineering corporation. Dr. Marshall is also a pastor.

And he sees a great opportunity in this field to show the Gospel and make God known through engineering.

“Engineers fulfill God’s call to serve others and to manage the environment,” explains the home page for the school. “They improve living conditions around the globe through the design, construction, and use of machines as well as the design, construction, and operation of water supply and waste treatment systems, roads, and bridges. Our engineering professors not only prepare students to develop sustainable

infrastructures for various industries, but also emphasize missional possibilities in underdeveloped countries.”

Classroom Renderings

Students enrolling in the Vogel School of Engineering are free to choose one of two options, mechanical engineering or civil engineering. Throughout the course of their undergraduate education they will have ample opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience with the local manufacturing industry.

Bryan College president Dr. Stephen D. Livesay considered, “The engineering program is a wonderful opportunity for Bryan College to enable students the chance to live out our mission statement. This will enable them to work both in industries here in the United States, as well as in countries around the world.

Doors are open in virtually any country to engineers who can assist with infrastructure needs and sanitation and clean water projects while sharing the gospel.”

More About the Donors:

George B. & Doris Vogel The Vogel School of Engineering is named for alumnus Brigadier General George B. Vogel ’58, who – along with his wife, Doris – provided a substantial gift for the new school. This fascinating couple’s lives have been characterized by lifelong service to God and country. Here is your chance to learn more about the donors who did so much to make the Vogel School of Engineering a reality.

eorge B. and Doris Vogel have been married for over 60 years. Gen. Vogel originally hailed from Philadelphia, Penn., and attended the Philadelphia Bible Institute (now known as Cairn University) before transferring to Bryan College for his last year. Doris was a star basketball player in the high school they both attended growing up, and they officially began dating while both attending Philadelphia Bible Institute, where Doris is in the Cairn Highlanders Hall of Honors for her achievements on the basketball team. They married in 1957, and Doris was by her husband’s side when he transferred to Bryan for his final undergraduate year. (They drove down to Dayton, Tenn., on their honeymoon, camping along the way!)

Thinking back on his time as a Bryan Lion, Gen. Vogel remarks, “I was impressed with the interest that the faculty and administration had for me as an individual.”

He graduated from Bryan in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible, and moved west to earn his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from the Talbot School of Theology in California – the state where he and Doris have lived ever since. He says he has gained “a deeper understanding of the Scriptures, as well as a deeper respect for people” through earning his degrees, as well as working with people from all varieties of geoeconomic classes and backgrounds.

During seminary he took a class in military chaplaincy, which sparked his interest in the field into which God would soon lead him. Gen. Vogel remembers God’s divine planning when reflecting on his career history: “I started in the National Guard when I was a pastor, went on active duty for five years, and stayed in the National Guard Reserves with almost 36 total years of service. I was a pastor of a congregational church in Los Angeles, then I was an army chaplain, then I went to work for the V.A. [the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs] in 1987. I’ve been working as a chaplain for the V.A. ever since.”

Gen. Vogel explains that during this time Doris “graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital as an RN, followed by Philadelphia Bible Institute, and eventually received a bachelor’s degree when the school became accredited. She worked in a hospital setting while I went to seminary. During my time in the pastorate she worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, teaching licensed vocational nurses at night. After I left the active military, Doris worked 15 years as a nurse in alcoholic rehabilitation. When she retired from nursing, she was the owner/manager of a party goods store in Mission Viejo, Calif.” She also volunteered for several years at the V.A. hospital – a great support to her husband throughout their lives with her compassionate heart and business sense.

Gen. Vogel’s current position as chief of chaplain service at the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center “is about bringing a spiritual dimension to the lives of the patients in the V.A. Hospital and to their families,” he explains. This includes short- and long-term patients of all kinds, including those in hospice care and in the large spinal cord injury ward (the largest of its kind in the 155 hospitals in the V.A.). Vogel was named the 2015 recipient of the Department of Veterans Affairs Under Secretary for Health’s Award for Excellence in Chaplaincy, The Lifetime Achievement Award. In May of 2015 he was honored with the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Bryan College in recognition of his lifetime of ministry and service to his God and his country. “I feel really fortunate that at my age and time of life I am still healthy enough to do the work and my mind is relatively active, and I’m just blessed. That’s why I’m able to do these things,” he says.

hillside chat › dr. jeff bruehl During the spring break of his sophomore year at another college, a young man passed through Dayton, Tenn., with a friend who wanted to take a look at the small college in town. It would have been hard to imagine that that one visit would turn into a decadeslong relationship with Bryan College: he transferred the next year and became a Bryan Lion – Class of 1976!

This is how Dr. Jeff Bruehl ’76, current professor of business, first heard of and came to Bryan. After graduating with his Bachelor of Science in business administration from Bryan, he earned his M.B.A. from Illinois State University (1987) and his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (1996). Dr. Bruehl has now been teaching business at Bryan for 27 years, a calling he considers especially rewarding because of the opportunity to teach both undergraduate and adult students how to relate their new business knowledge to their Christian worldview.

To Dr. Bruehl the link between the world of business and the world of faith is a natural one.

He explains, “So much of Scripture deals with relational and financial issues in very practical terms. I believe that our Lord is honored as we deal

fairly and appropriately with all so-called ‘stakeholders’ in the modern business community.

Living out a Christian worldview solves many – if not all – of the questions of equality, fairness, legality, social responsibility and conduct, and other current personal and organizational issues.”

His philosophy of teaching has been greatly influenced by that of his own former Bryan professor Dr. John Anderson, who was well known by his students for preferring the Socratic approach. He prefers “interactive team- and discussion-based learning” to invest in the minds of his students and encourage them to be “students for life.”

Taylor Hasty ’06 perhaps said it best: “Jeff Bruehl has been one of the most consistent and faithful members of our Bryan community. I am thankful for his ministry in the lives of so many. He is truly a blessing to us all.”

hillside chat › dr. clark rose To say Dr. Clark Rose is a valuable asset to Bryan College is a huge understatement. Though a busy tenured professor and the chair of the psychology department, Dr. Rose is always offering others his time and gifts. Whether by teaching in the classroom or through his unscheduled lunches with students, Dr. Rose daily demonstrates his surrendered life to the Lord through his service to the Bryan community.

Serving diligently and selflessly, Dr. Rose has been a significant influence to the Bryan College community for over 20 years – 17 of these years as a tenured professor. With a M.S. in community counseling from The University of Tennessee Knoxville and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Georgia, Dr. Rose is also a licensed professional counselor and mental health service provider with the state of Tennessee. Before moving to higher education, he counseled in the mental health field for several years, working specifically with juvenile delinquents and male sex offenders.

One substantial contribution Dr. Rose made was in 2010 when Bryan’s psychology department hosted the five authors of Psychology & Christianity: Five Views, which reviews the spectrum of the integration of Christianity and psychology.

Thoughtful integration is a passion close to Dr. Rose’s heart, and one he constantly refines.

My own experience with Dr. Rose is a unique and treasured one. After sitting under his teaching four years and graduating with a degree in psychology, I now have the privilege to glean from him as my clinical supervisor as I pursue my licensure with the State of Tennessee. As I have journeyed alongside of Dr. Rose, I have experienced firsthand a man who is Spirit-led and prayerful in his care for the hurting. As a young professional in the field, there are many days when I am overwhelmed with gratitude for his supervision, mentorship, and guidance in the development of the Bryan College Counseling Services.

Fellow alumnus and friend James Baird ’12 recently shared about the impact Dr. Rose made on him in a way that best sums up this impactful professor’s influence on his students over the years: “Dr. Rose lives out a core concept of psychology: congruency. Dr. Rose models what he teaches, that our lives belong to God, and holistic love of Him is the healthiest and most joyful way to live.”

STUDENT PROFILE “ STEPHANIE CHAVEZ, SENIOR MATHEMATICS, SECONDARY EDUCATION LICENSURE

D

on’t be afraid to just try it.” That is the advice that senior mathematics education major Stephanie Chavez gives to prospective students who have an interest in teaching. Hailing from Albuquerque, N.M., Stephanie has always wanted to be a teacher. “My goal is to teach in public schools, and I was raised in public schools,” she notes, “but I wanted to get intentional instruction on how to teach from a Christian perspective, even when I can’t share my faith in the classroom.”

Stephanie has begun her first round of student teaching this semester at Dayton City School in Rhea County, Tenn.; her second student teaching period will be back in her hometown of Albuquerque – with the very high school teacher who inspired her to teach higher mathematics.

During her time at Bryan she has been very involved in campus life, especially the Break for Change (Detroit), the Acts Project (Zambia), and the tutoring program for the community. She became one of the tutoring program’s student leaders in her freshman year, a position she only recently stepped down from to student teach.

Having just earned her TESOL, she feels that the Lord is calling her back to serve students in her hometown.

“My current goal is to go back to Albequerque after graduation and teach in a public school with a significant refugee population,” she says. And of one thing there can be no doubt: wherever she goes, she will show the love of Christ, the ultimate Good Teacher.

A

fter observing the small student body size and the faculty interactions, Kate Westrick ’18 knew Bryan was the place for her. Over the course of three years Kate served on the worship arts team and SGA, and just last year she started up a club called the American Enterprise Institute Executive Council, which encourages discussion about topics like welfare policies and education with the goal “to see Bryan more engaged and involved in really important policy discussions.”

Having just finished the last of her undergraduate requirements over the summer, Kate has officially earned her Bryan College degree in three years instead of the typical four-year plan. Now she is one of only eight young women and men to be chosen for the highly competitive

John Jay Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pa. Alongside her other fellows, Kate will spend the next several months in intensive intellectual development, daily reading about 150 pages of material and participating in several hours of mindsharpening Socratic discussion, along with growing in Christian community.

And afterward? “My heart is for nonprofits,” mused Kate. “I would love to garner some skill and acumen in communications and administration in the corporate world and then be able to bring those to non-profits in order to help them strengthen their missions and mobilize them in a more effective and more sustainable way.”

Mr. Bernie Belisle RETIRED THEATRE PROFESSOR | 1993-2018

In your 25 years at Bryan, which classes were your favorite to teach?

Directing for the Stage would be one of my favorites.

I saw a lot of “Ah ha!” lights go on in that one. And I certainly enjoyed teaching the Introduction to Theatre class, which was an opportunity for me to get to know students outside the theatre major.

What have your years as director for the Hilltop Players meant to you?

It was a great opportunity to work with such talented young people, to see them grow in the craft as well as their spiritual and emotional lives, becoming young adults. And the great thing about working in Hilltop Players is that you get to see the end product!

What is your favorite theatrical genre, and what have been your favorite plays at Bryan?

I’ve done so many diverse things, it’s hard to focus on one. I love suspense mystery – that’s always fun to do! And I also love serious plays and comedies as well. Of course, musicals are all part of that.

My favorite play would be The Spitfire Grill. It has such a redemptive story, and the music is just wonderful. I’ve also enjoyed doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare and Into the Woods.

What does it take to achieve excellence as a director, producer, actor, or actress?

One of the advantages to working at a small Christian college is that your relationship with Christ is a really important aspect of developing your craft. You have to realize that it’s bigger than yourself. If you’re really focused on just yourself, then you’re not finding the full intensity and development that you could. You also have to be well-rounded.

Why does theatre matter?

Theatre is a composite of life. It shows in very succinct moments how people deal with conflict and relationships.

It’s a great way to understand people who are not like you, because you are developing characters who are not like you. It also helps you develop a sense of community. Even those who are not theatre majors who are involved in plays and production go on to enrich their communities in the art scene – one of the primary indicators of a healthy community.

What do you consider the most important lesson you taught your theatre students?

To love God and to do all for his glory. The Hilltop Players’ motto is Excellence for His Glory. One of the most important things I want my students to take away from our program is to go out there and make an impact for Christ where they are.

Many of my students are doing just that.

Will you be back on campus to attend future fine arts events?

Of course!

beauty of human nature, and righteousness. He has also written about the human condition, including despair, in such a way that he always clings to the hope of God and trust in God, and can therefore draw you back toward that truth.

Do you have a single favorite poem?

How could I choose one as my very favorite? Of Hopkins’ poetry, my favorite will always be “As Kingfishers Catch Fire” because it talks about as our identity as individuals in Christ and exhorts us to see Christ in the eyes of all other people and to treat them that way.

In the grand scheme of life, why should writing well be a priority?

What class did you find most rewarding to teach?

Writing is ubiquitous: we don’t live in an oral culture.

Therefore, we should want to communicate clearly with others, to write truthfully and therefore clearly. The whole purpose of communication is to serve others, so we should want to do it the very best we can in order to be clear and persuasive.

The Creative Nonfiction class brings students to a place where they look at experiences in a universal context of searching for the truth in it. It is a form of writing that asks you to engage in a self-analysis for the purpose of learning about yourself and how your experiences connects to the rest of the world, and how God has worked in your life.

Why does literature matter?

I once had a business student in Intro to Literature who approached me around mid-term and said, “I took this class because I had to; but I’ve realized that reading these stories and poems has made me understand human nature in a way that nothing else can.” Literature embodies Truth in a way that makes us know and practice it in our lives. And literature brings beauty: Your biology text may give you wonderful truths, but it won’t give you the beauty of the natural world in the same way that a story or a piece of art will.

Who is your favorite poet?

I would have to say Gerard Manley Hopkins, for his sense of beauty: the beauty of nature, the beauty of God, the

What one lesson do you hope your students gleaned from your courses?

The way they use language matters to God and to their neighbor, because through language they can better serve God and love their neighbor.

Do you plan to do any writing in retirement?

Yes, I hope to do the writing I’ve wanted to do for years.

I want to focus in on certain things that are important to me, writing about literature not as an academic critic but writing about literature because I love it!

W

e recently celebrated Bryan College commencement with over 130 young graduates and 24 Golden Grads from the Class of 1968 celebrating their 50 th reunion. I wish you could have seen it. It was a warm spring day with storms on the horizon. Our Golden Grads sat in the Triangle looking so regal in their black robes, bright gold tassels, and satin stoles; and then the march began. Along with our president and faculty, our students walked proudly in. There was such pride in that moment, such accomplishment. From my vantage point on the stage facing the crowd I could see our Golden Grads sitting directly behind our new graduates – and its symbolism struck me.

The wisdom and grace of advanced years, mingled with the anticipation and elation of youth is truly beautiful.

As I talked with our Golden Grads, God’s enduring faithfulness was a recurring and resonant theme. Their lives are not only intersected by God’s grace and mercy, but also changed and made beautiful this side of heaven.

I loved observing them fellowship with each other, which for some was the first time in 50 years for some! The commonality of Lions and the pride we share as alumni are precious.

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone, And our children sift through all we’ve left behind, May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find.

I found these Golden Grads faithful, and I pray our newly graduated students will be found faithful as well. Life rarely turns out the way we imagine; in any case, God’s commands and promises are always true: “Be holy, for I am Holy.” I pray I am found faithful and the footprints I leave are not in worldly treasure and spoils, but rather living a life that honors God. What will our footprints tell about us when we are gone?

The heritage and legacy of our predecessors are rich.

Thank you, Lions who have gone before. I pray many will come behind and find us faithful.

They have three children, Christian ’20, Rebecca ’21, and Julianna. Matt earned his M.Div. at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in 1996. He has served in fulltime ministry as a youth pastor and associate pastor from 1995-2006. Then he transitioned to the position of lead pastor of The Grove Church in Greenbrier, Tenn. Matt loves all kinds of literature, especially theology. He enjoys sports (coaching soccer for nine years) and music. Featuring Michael Smith ’92 Michael Smith ’92 graduated from Bryan with a degree in music and also met his beautiful wife, Whitney Lee ’92 there. While at Bryan he played the lead role in The Music Man. The truth of God’s Word and grace lived out in many of the faculty at Bryan was key in his decision to follow Christ.

Michael is also the proud uncle of Michael Moore ’13 who graduated from Bryan with a degree in guitar performance and who also will be performing some amazing finger-style guitar at this event. Michael Smith currently serves as worship leader at North Shore Fellowship in Chattanooga.

He is a resident of Signal Mountain and the director of information technology at Unum. Michael is the lead singer for Uptown Big Band, a 20-piece swing band out of Chattanooga. Michael and Whitney have two children, Michael, Jr., (16) and Summer (13).

Alumni of the Year: Jim ’89 and Susan (Klaus) ’88 Woychuk Jesus calls us to be perfect, “as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matt. 5:48). Rather than a hopelessly high standard, Christian perfection means maturity, completeness, and a heart that has all the parts it was designed to have. A life that fires on all cylinders! And the essence of Christian maturity is a capacity to love people the way God loves them. At Bryan College we saw so much of that Christian ideal of love in our teachers, in the staff, in our fellow students! And the horizon of what it meant to love God’s Word and His world grew so large. God got bigger … through the all-encompassing Christian humanism of Ruth Kantzer. The indefatigable wit and insight of Richard Cornelius. The musical genius of David Friberg. The literary wisdom of Betty Brynoff. The gladness of Alan Winkler. The integrated vision of Malcolm Fary. The green of Pocket Wilderness. The light of God’s Word and the music of praise in innumerable chapels. Laughter in the Lion’s Den. The chance to plant seeds in public school Bible classes. There are so many more.

In the 26 years since we left Bryan, we have had the privilege of serving nine years at a rescue mission, seven years at an inner-city church, twelve years at a small town church, and five years in the promotion of Scripture memorizing with Scripture Memory Fellowship. God gave us that along with three precious children: Faith (16), Jonathan (14), and Mary (7). In all these works we find ourselves so thankful for the truth, the people, and the Lord Himself, Whom we came to know better through the love and labor of the teachers and staff of Bryan. There we saw that growing in Christ is a process that continues for a lifetime! “I will run the course of Your commandments, for You shall enlarge my heart” (Psa. 119:32).

Young Alumni of the Year: Taylor and Julie (Thompson) Hasty ’06 Taylor arrived at Bryan as a student in the fall of 2002 to play baseball and study history, as well as business and Bible. He served as a team captain for three years, and in his senior season he earned the Bryan College Athletic Department’s highest honor, the Lion of Valor award. Julie arrived at the same time and studied communications and Bible, and she also was a varsity cheerleader and was very involved in PCI ministries as a student. They both graduated in 2006 and were married soon after.

Taylor went on to receive his master’s degree from the United States Sports Academy in 2010 and in the summer of 2008 was promoted to the head baseball coaching position at Bryan. He moved into a dual role position as both the head coach and athletic director in August of 2013.

Taylor recently accepted a position as Athletic Director at Silverdale Baptist Academy. Taylor and Julie, along with their three children Maddux, Jackson, and Lyla, will be residing in Chattanooga.

Honorary Alumni of the Year: Doug Schott (1947-2018) After coming on campus in 2003, Doug Schott served Bryan College for many years in several capacities: as the director of physical plant, college safety and security officer, and admissions liaison (Nashville area). Prior to joining the Bryan family, Doug had several worldwide military installations with the U.S. Airforce, including four tours of combat duty in southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He also directed disaster response and recovery operations for the 60,000-person evacuation following the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. After this time he continued to invest many years into careers related to security and operations, including two years as the president of Contingency Assessment Services in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and three years with Security Consultants Group.

Doug and his wife, Dottie, have been dear friends of Bryan College. During production of this magazine Doug passed away after battling cancer, and he will be greatly missed.

Sports Hall of Fame: Brittany (Swanson) Dalton ’07 Brittany (Swanson) Dalton graduated from Bryan with a degree in communications in 2007.

Brittany lettered four years in basketball under the coaching of Matt Bollant and Corey Mullins. As a Lady Lion she competed in four NAIA-DII National tournaments and was part of winning one AAC tournament championship and three regular season championships.

Brittany’s greatest individual honors include two-time AAC Player of the Year and NAIA-DII 1st and 2nd team All-American. After graduation she married Will Dalton, and together they are raising two beautiful boys, Jax Henry (7) and Lane Walker (4). Brittany will forever be grateful for the lessons learned and memories made at Bryan College.

fter graduating high school at 16, Don Reed ’63 was introduced to the field of banking. His employer invited him to take advantage of resources provided by the American Institute of Banking to earn college credits, starting with night courses at the University of Buffalo.

After he had spent a year and a half at the bank, developing his customer service and financial skills at a teller’s window, the bank promoted him to the position of junior loan officer by age 18.

Reed had planned on attending a Bible school in New York, but through several conversations he was introduced to Bryan

Following his graduation from Bryan with a B.A. in Greek in 1963, Reed kept pursuing higher learning to answer God’s call on his life toward ministry.

This included a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, a Master of Christian Education from North American Baptist Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Bethel Theological Seminary. During that time the Lord called him to embark on a 43-year career in local church ministry. Here he experienced church staff ministry, church planting, senior pastorate, and regional oversight of 75 churches in northern California.

Having finished that fulltime ministry work, Dr. Reed

and his wife, Rae (also from the class of ’63), are deeply involved with volunteer work: a road that has led back to Bryan College! Dr. Reed voluntarily serves as a generosity advisor for Bryan. With his extensive background in ministry, banking and estate design, he is uniquely qualified to offer financial consulting services to the Bryan College family.

Don notes, “This service is one way in which we can repay in part what others did for us to allow us to attend Bryan.”

Taylor Hasty ’06 ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, SILVERDALE BAPTIST ACADEMY

Not long after graduating, Taylor joined Bryan’s staff as an assistant baseball coach and admissions counselor.

He went on to receive his master’s degree from the United States Sports Academy in 2010. In the summer of 2008, following the head coach’s retirement, he was promoted to the head coaching position for the Bryan baseball team. Only five years later, the Lord led him to a position of investing even more into the athletes at Bryan as not only the head baseball coach but also the athletic director.

aylor Hasty arrived at Bryan as a student in the fall of 2002 to play baseball and study history, as well as business and Bible. Starting from his freshman year, he played a major role in helping restart Bryan’s baseball program, which had been on a 16-year hiatus. After serving as a baseball team

captain for three years, in his senior season he earned the Bryan College Athletic Department’s highest honor, the Lion of Valor award, given annually to the outstanding Christian athlete who has excelled both on and off the field. Taylor graduated in 2006 and married Julie (Thompson) ’06 soon thereafter.

And the Lord has continued to lead Taylor to new ways of influencing the next generation of athletes for Christ, teaching them to do their best and honor God in the process. He recently accepted a position as the athletic director at Silverdale Baptist Academy in Chattanooga. Taylor and Julie, along with their three beautiful children – Maddux, Jackson, and Lyla – are soon moving to Chattanooga to follow this calling.

Speaking of their time at Bryan College, Taylor said, “Thank you for your prayers, your kindness, and your friendship. Most importantly, thank you for loving me and our family – I will be forever grateful for our time at Bryan. God is moving us on from this special place, but Bryan College will forever be close to our hearts, and we will always be Lions!”

In Loving Memory C HRISTOPHER N ITZBAND 1994 – 2018

have heard many discuss how Christopher Nitzband was a philosopher and scholar, he was an avid writer/ reader, he wore bow ties everywhere, and he consumed large amounts of coffee. But what truly stood out to me was Christopher’s heart. While he loved his studies and bowties, his love for his friends and family was what truly set him apart from the crowd. It never mattered how busy he got: he would always make sure he was there for those he cared for most. He was the most self less and kindhearted person I have ever known, and will likely ever know, as he wore his heart on his sleeve.

My time at Bryan was short and ever-changing, but the one thing I always knew I had was that friendship. I first met Christopher during my freshman year at Bryan, and despite my sarcastic nature he became my dearest friend. What I didn’t know at the time was the fact that some of the staff thought we were siblings, an idea I never denied.

Christopher was a gentleman through and through – not for how he dressed, but for his loving and compassionate nature. He would never hesitate to offer his jacket on a cold day. He would be willing to walk miles around campus to help any heartbroken friend and drop everything to make sure his friends were happy. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t have the life I have had it not been for that scholar. I will never be able to look at a sunset or a bowtie, or walk through the Bryan library without remembering Christopher. He was and will be forever my best friend; and although he was not my blood, he was loved like a brother. My life and the lives of the many people he touched will never be the same. Carpe Diem.

FACULTY & STAFF NOTES Dr. Zeb Balentine has accepted the position of assistant professor of Christian ministries and worship arts and is also the new director of campus worship.

Dr. Kevin Clauson attended the Christian Engineering Conference at Cedarville University in Ohio on June 28-30, 2017, to promote Bryan’s new engineering program. In September 2017 he moderated the “Legacy of Reformation: Liberty” panel at the Reformation 500 conference at Liberty University.

Dr. Lorraine Doran ’00 successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at The University of the Cumberlands. Her dissertation is titled “A Quantitative Examination of Principals’ Leadership Styles and Adult Learning Orientation in K-12 Settings in Tennessee.”

Dr. Neal Doran was named Bryan’s Scholar of the Year for the 20172018 academic year. He has pursued much scholarship over the past year, including submitting articles on human baraminology, dinosaurs, and fossils in creationism to the Journal of

Creation Theology and Science (Series B), the International Conference on Creationism, and Answers in Genesis’ Answers Magazine. He is scheduled to two presentations at the International STAFF Conference on Creationism in Pittsburgh, Pa., both of which were co-authored by current Bryan students.

Dr. Nicole Doran performed her new composition “In Six Days” at the International Conference on Creationism in Pittsburgh, Pa., in July 2018.

Dr. Olivia Ellis attended the Tennessee Music Teachers Association annual conference on June 3-6, 2017, where she presented a session on “Teaching Students with Special Needs.” She also adjudicated for the statewide elementary piano competitions and continues as treasurer for the organization. Dr. Ellis led two guest discussions at Belmont University in October 2017: “Important Elements of Piano Lessons” and “Incorporating Improvisation & Creativity into Group Piano.” Her review of new piano teaching materials was published in the American Music Teacher magazine.

Dr. Benton Jones ’07 took a group of Enactus students to the Team Summit at Kennesaw State University in Austin, Texas, on October 28, 2017, at which time a grant of over $1,300 from Enactus U.S. was awarded to fly the students to the Career Summit.

Dr. Scott Jones presented at the October 2017 SPCE (The Society of Professors in Christian Education) Annual Conference on “Sola Scriptura and Cultural Intelligence: Necessary Components of the Disciple Making Process.”

Dr. Tom Marshall has signed on as Bryan’s new Dean of Engineering; he will lead the new engineering program with specializations in mechanical and civil engineering starting Fall 2018. Dr. Marshall has helped two other schools (California Baptist University and Mt. Vernon Nazarene University) to start up engineering programs, and he has a great passion for missional engineering.

Bruce Morgan ’82 attended a meeting of CHASCo (Coalition for Healthy And Safe Campus Communities) on Sept. 29, 2017, at Pellissippi State Community College. He also attended several webinars regarding addressing current events, the prevention of sexual violence and alcohol/drug abuse, and strategic prevention. In April 2018 he attended the Title IX Summit in Knoxville, Tenn.

Dr. Jonathan Newman joined the faculty as an assistant professor of economics and finance. Dr. Newman earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Auburn University. He had a book chapter (“Contemporary Debates on Opportunity Cost Theory and Pedagogy”) published by Routelage in a book entitled The Economic Theory of Costs: Foundations and New Directions; this article also placed in two Top 10 lists on the Social Science Research Network. In February 2018 his article “After Years of Easy Money, We Needed This Stock Market Correction” was published in Newsweek Magazine and even in Newsweek Japan.

Dr. Dwight Page, who is the editorin-chief of the Swiss American Historical Review, addressed the annual meeting of the Messer Family Genealogical Association of North

Carolina on Oct. 7, 2017. The topic of his address was “The Family of Captain Robert Messer of Revolutionary War Fame: from Canton Bern to North Carolina and Tennessee.”

by Cambridge Scholars Publishing to serve on their Editorial Advisory Board.

Dr. Clark Rose and his wife, Yvonne Rose, travelled to Austria in the summer of 2017 to visit a student in one of Bryan’s international internships at Pro Mente Mental Health Hospital and toured their additional facilities throughout Austria. They also explored the possibilities and development of a travel abroad class in Europe called The Foundations and History of Modern Psychology. Dr. Rose has begun serving as the faculty athletic representative at Bryan. In October 2017 he was on a panel called “Coffee and Conversation – Giving a Voice to the Voiceless” with Dr. Christopher Yuan. The panel

addressed how Christians can best minister to and understand people dealing with lesbian, gay, and samesex attraction issues and was attended by over 100 students. He also gave an address titled “Psychology Through the Lens of a Christian Worldview” at several Evening with Bryan fundraising events in 2018.

Dr. Adina Scruggs ’91 was elected Vice President of the Southern Region of IACBE. She represented Bryan College’s business education at the annual conference in New Orleans, La., on Apr. 17-20, 2018. In May 2018 she traveled with the Bryan College Enactus team to compete at the National Expo in Kansas City, Mo., where the team placed 2nd in their league in the competition’s opening round. She also attended the TICUA Advancing Leaders Summit in Hendersonville, Tenn., in July 2018.

Dr. John Sterling was honored by News Channel 9 on Aug. 22, 2017, for its “Pay It Forward” segment.

He was nominated for the volunteer work he’s done to help restore a truck for the Blazing Hope Ranch.

Dr. Sterling gave a short TED talk at Baylor on learning problemsolving skills by working on old cars and trucks.

Dr. Kristi Strode and Lee University’s Dr. La-Juan Bradford presented “Serving Students with Disabilities with Excellence” for the 2017 Appalachian College Association (ACA) Summit in Kingsport, Tenn., on Sept. 30,

2017. They also hosted a free training and collaborative event at the ACA headquarters in Richmond, Ky., in April 2018 to discuss current issues and trends in ADA. In addition, Dr. Strode attended the ACA’s first meeting of the Disability Providers Consortium.

Dr. Jamie Summerville has joined the faculty as professor of mathematics and pre-engineering.

Kevin Woodruff was interviewed by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal about the Scopes Trial, William Jennings Bryan, Clarence Darrow, and the trial’s connection to Bryan College.

He also gave a talk to the Four Seasons Garden Club on James Audubon.

Dr. Sam Youngs successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at The Kings

College of the University of London in 2017. He was named Bryan’s Teacher of the Year for the 2017-2018 academic year.
