ear alumni and friends,

As we look forward to the upcoming academic year and reflect on this past year, it has certainly been a fascinating and tremendously historical year. From the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting challenges to race riots and a heated presidential election, this past year has been referred to as “unprecedented” by many. Yet, this year hasn’t been quite as unique as some may think. The year 1968 presented many similar challenges—President Richard Nixon narrowly won a politically-charged presidential election, riots erupted across the country following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the Hong Kong flu pandemic spread quickly across the globe, targeting the elderly and killing between 1 and 4 million people. As Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes, “there is nothing new under the sun” (ESV Ecc. 1:9). Earth is a fallen place, and we’ll continue to face the same challenges until God makes all things new.

Times of crisis cause each of us to ask questions.

As I complete my first year as president of Bryan College, I’ve found myself asking what I value most in life and what drives me as a leader. As I reflect, I’m humbled by the tension that develops between what I desire in my heart and what God desires. Selfishly, I want the circumstances of the world to be back to “normal,” whatever that might be. I want the financial resources to build academic programs and extend the opportunity of a great education to as many students as possible, without worrying about funding. While these are not bad desires, when they come from my own selfish motivation and desires rather than a reliance on God’s provision, there is a problem. When my values spring from a desire to know God and make Him known, I can step out in faith and allow God to use me as He sees fit here at Bryan College.

We have amazing alumni across the nation and around the world who are making a difference in their families, communities, and vocations. It has truly been a joy for Susi and me to connect with many of you and answer questions through our Roast & Roar Zoom calls. Events such as Homecoming and the Golden Grad celebration have provided us the opportunity to meet many of you face to face. One of the reasons I returned to Bryan was the opportunity to again be with students. It has been a special privilege to connect with students in the halls, cafeteria, Triangle, and at the President’s house. Engaging students with the knowledge, values, and skills they will need to be successful is the reason I do what I do. We also have an amazingly gifted team here on Bryan Hill. Covid prevented us from gathering together as a team, but since November, I’ve made it a priority to meet with faculty and staff on a monthly basis in order to celebrate achievements and to provide updates on what is happening around campus.

“ ” I value the transformative power of education. It’s an incredible opportunity to lead an organization that equips students with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world. I recently had the chance to sit down with many of our 2021 seniors at the Senior BBQ and discuss what they are planning to do after graduation. I’m continually amazed by the creativity and courage of our students to work hard and tackle problems facing today’s world.

Most importantly, I value the transformative power of the Gospel. When I was a student from 1988 to 1992, I continually saw our motto of Christ Above All emphasized and lived out by faculty, staff, and my peers. Today, I continue to see that motto lived out across campus. I never get tired of hearing students tell stories of how God brought them to Bryan and then changed their lives through the work of faculty and staff. At a Presidential Briefing at the beginning of the semester, senior Anna Owens thanked faculty and staff for creating a safe place for students where she could grow, sometimes through failure, spiritually and academically. At the Bryan Opportunity Scholarship Program dinner in April, junior Carlos Portillo shared how he has fallen in love with Scriptures and found who he is in Christ while at Bryan. Stories like these do not happen simply because of our hard work and good intentions. The Gospel of Christ transforms lives.

Bryan exists at this intersection between the transformative power of Christ and the transformative power of education. For more than 90 years, Bryan College has sought to provide students with an education that is grounded in scripture and promotes a life given to Christ Above All. Our verse of the past year has been 1 Peter 4:10: “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (ESV). My prayer for myself and for Bryan College is that we will use the skills we have been given to serve one another in order to bring glory to Christ Above All. I ask you to join me in this prayer.

C

ommunity has long been a buzzword on campus. Students can often be seen studying together in the library, hanging out in the Triangle, playing against each other in the Lion’s Den game room, or squeezing as many chairs around a table as possible in the cafeteria. Our Office of Student Life continually fosters community through events and outreach opportunities. Community is also seen in the relationships between students and professors. From discussions in the classroom to greetings in the hall to playing chess in the cafeteria, our professors strive to develop deep connections with students.

But sixteen months ago, the way we do community at Br yan College was radically changed. We began the spring 2020 semester with a great deal of optimism.

Plans had been made for several Break for Change trips, a chorale tour, games on the road and at home, and a myriad of other activities, not to mention regular classroom meetings. We were busy. The pandemic began spreading in the United States as students left for spring break, and we had to transition to remote learning for the rest of the semester. Connections and impromptu conversations in hallways, the cafeteria, or residence halls were no longer possible. Our Student Life team did an amazing job reaching out and connecting with students, but there is something about togetherness that cannot be replicated through virtual means.

We came back to campus in the fall with excitement at being together again, but we were met with the necessity of significant campus changes to minimize the spread of Covid-19. Buildings that were once dorms and offices were quickly transformed to create quarantine housing and isolation PAGE 4 | BRYAN LIFE

units. Cafeteria seating was reduced, and tables were labeled with the maximum number of people who could sit there.

Chapel took place outside in front of the gym, and a jumbotron was used for both chapel and to view games happening inside.

Glass dividers were hung in reception areas and classrooms, and hand sanitizing stations were placed all over campus. Air filtration was added to popular areas on campus, and cameras were installed in classrooms so that those in quarantine could watch recordings.

These changes made community challenging.

Senior Randi Hazelwood expressed how these challenges affected campus life: “ We all sit farther away from each other. We don’t join random people at lunch tables in case they are uncomfortable with coming into contact with people outside of their cohort. It is, of course, a positive thing to see that the Bryan community is willing to pull together even when it is uncomfortable just to make sure we are able to stay on the hill. But many other students and I are really missing that community feeling that drew us to Bryan in the first place.”

The distance caused by the pandemic has made this year difficult, but it has also produced a deeper appreciation of community. Faculty, staff, and students had to be creative and intentional about building connections with each other.

Tents and fire pits were added to outside areas for students to spend time together at safe proximities in fresh air. Events such as movie nights, virtual concerts, a banquet, and Homecoming were all held outside. Technology such as video calling and texting became even more prevalent, especially to remain connected to those in

quarantine or isolation. Throughout the year, the Bryan community held a posture of grace and service to one another. It was amazing to see people continually step up and put in hard work in order to foster community while remaining safe. According to Associate Professor of Communication Studies Michael Palmer, “It has been good to see visible proof in students and staff and faculty of adaptability, resilience, and creativity.”

In April, we were able to lift our mask mandate. How wonderful it was to see the faces of those around us! We were able to celebrate the end of the semester and the

graduation of our seniors in person with big smiles. As we look forward to the next school year, we are excited to continue returning to a sense of normalcy but with a better appreciation of the community we have at Bryan and a continued focus on serving one another well. Alumni, students, faculty, and staff all have stories about the great community and the lifelong friends they found here at Bryan. As we welcome students back to campus and gather again in classrooms, the cafeteria, chapel, and elsewhere, may we not take for granted that ability and cherish the connections we are able to make.

s Selah led us to the throne of God at the April 15th Bryan Opportunity Scholarship Program (BOP) dinner, my soul was refreshed and my spirit quieted. It was the healing balm I needed after so many months of uncertainty, ever-changing plans, and loss of loved ones. I was reminded that “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me,” and though times are turbulent, “it is well with my soul.”

At 228, the audience was less than half of the prior BOP dinner’s attendance, but what a blessing to finally be in the same room with over 200 people. The excitement of being together was clearly written on so many faces. When the dinner and program had ended, folks continued to mingle and talk for a couple of hours. We were clearly in need of interaction with the body of Christ.

Even though I had heard student Carlos Portillo tell his story in his interview with me and again in a practice run with our departmental staff, I was once again moved to tears when he shared about his life at the dinner. To hear how Carlos was redeemed from a cult when he came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Savior was soul-stirring. To learn that his decision to abandon the cult cost him a place to live with his dad was heartbreaking. To realize he was willing to walk away from home so he could continue growing in his newfound faith was inspiring.

Carlos was one of 50 students qualifying for the Bryan Opportunity Scholarship this year.

The average gross income of these families is $22,250. BOP is a guarantee that academicallyqualifying Tennessee students with a family income of $36,000 or less can come to Bryan completely tuition-free. A private-school, Christian-worldview, liberal-arts education would not be possible for these students without a program such as BOP. As I write this article, we’ve raised more than $179,000 of our $250,000 BOP goal. While this is 28% short of our goal, it isn’t anything to sneeze at during a pandemic. Thank you, thank you, thank you to those of you who’ve given to this scholarship program or prayed for our BOP students. You’ve made an eternal investment.

MEET DON REED Don Reed was born into a poverty-level dairy farm family in western New York State. When he graduated from high school at age 16, he did not have money for college and was too young to go into the military. Don began working for a bank and attending classes at the American Institute of Banking. At age 19, he felt God was leading him to pursue Christian higher education. Don enrolled in Bryan College and went on to graduate in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts in Greek. He later earned Master of Christian Education, Master of Theology, and Doctor of Ministry degrees. After serving as a church planter, senior pastor, and regional overseer of a family of 75 churches located on the West Coast, Don took training in Major Donor Development and Estate Design. The training further prepared him for weekly classes he now teaches at his home church in NW Arkansas, as well as for the volunteer work he does for Bryan College.

Like so many others, Don met his bride at Bryan College. Rachel (Paulson) Reed also graduated in 1963. Don and Rachel feel that volunteering for Bryan College is one way they can repay in part what others did for them to allow them to attend Bryan. Don and Rachel both come from families who could not afford to help with college expenses.

s we looked toward the 2020/2021 school year last spring, we were met with a great deal of uncertainty.

Our normal operation had been disrupted significantly, and we did not know if we would be able to remain on campus or hold in-person classes. All we could do was take steps that made sense based on current knowledge and trust that God would guide our path.

In order to continue serving our students well, we deemed it necessary to equip our classrooms with quality video equipment to allow for increased flexibility. We were able to purchase and install this equipment through a $25,000 grant from the Hugh & Charlotte Maclellan Charitable Trust.

The video equipment has enabled us to remain adaptable through uncertain circumstances and has proven to be essential this school year. Students in quarantine or isolation have been able to stay connected with their classes and not miss important learning opportunities during extended absences. Though it has not been necessary, the video equipment allowed us to be better prepared in case of a sudden switch to online learning. Since August, recorded lectures from this video equipment have been viewed over 7,200 times.

The benefit of video-ready classrooms extends beyond the pandemic. Nearly 50% of Bryan College’s student body is composed of student-athletes, who must routinely miss class periods throughout the term due to games. We have many students who may have to miss class due to circumstances outside their control.

Quality recordings of classroom-based learning experiences are a tremendous asset to all students when missing class is necessary.

Our desire is to provide a quality education to our students so that they are equipped to make a difference through the skills the Lord has given them. The pandemic has made this challenging in a number of ways, but we are thankful to have partners like the Hugh & Charlotte Maclellan Charitable Trust supporting us.

Because of their gift, we have been able to serve our students well through a challenging time.

R

udd Memorial Chapel holds a special place at the heart of student and community life in Dayton, TN. Constructed in the late 1970s, she remains the only 800 seat venue in the immediate area with private dressing rooms, entertainment space, offices, and classrooms. She has played host to many events throughout the years from performing arts and corporate worship to the community ballet and December commencement.

Over time, she has seen renovations come and go as needs arose—new paint, fresh carpet, and redesigns for classrooms.

Creativity breathes fresh life into everything it touches, and Rudd is no different. 10 years ago, several pieces of audio technology were donated to the chapel. With it came new sounds and new possibilities. As the auditorium continued to acquire new technology, professional artists performed for our students. The Hilltop Players explored innovative expressions of theater, and audiences experienced the imagination of the College.

In the winter of 2019 it became apparent that a stage lighting overhaul was long overdue.

Through the efforts of Jim Kinser and Janice Pendergrass, we raised funds, removed old technology, implemented structural upgrades, and contracted Chattanooga Pro Audio, an audio/video company centered in North Georgia.

Installation began in February of this year.

Every outdated incandescent stage light has been replaced with a 360 degree, full motion LED from Chauvet Lighting. 22 new fixtures hang from the stage, casting full light and color anywhere and at any time. The Hilltop Players will use these to create scenes, moods, and special effects during their productions. Additionally, 4 oversized, full motion spot-lights now hang from the ceiling. These are especially beautiful during recitals, ensembles, and Chorale or Chamber Singer performances. A new 4k projector casts a brilliant image to the screen, allowing Worship Arts to create beautiful presentations for our corporate gatherings. Finally, everything is controlled by a touchscreen computer mounted in the balcony, creating complete flexibility for any performance.

The inaugural Rudd event after the installation was the piano ensemble’s murder mystery show, and students were able to make use of the new lighting in several other fine arts performances. For the last few weeks of the semester, we were finally able to hold chapel in Rudd again, and the new lighting system and projector accentuated the excitement of gathering together. Following the semester, Dayton Christian Ballet and Distinguished Women of Rhea County were able to use the new lighting.

At Bryan College, we seek to encourage creativity, and we are excited to better highlight everything that happens on the Rudd stage. This new installation is a beautiful extension of what Rudd Memorial Chapel has always been: a special blessing that Bryan College leverages for the Gospel of Jesus.

ine years! The best way I can describe this journey as Alumni Director is meeting up close and personal giants in the faith. I don’t mean famous people. Most of our alumni are just ordinary people, but they are extraordinary in their faith, in their giving, and in their love for others. Our alumni include extraordinary missionaries, pastors, teachers, doctors and nurses, business people, technicians, and mothers and fathers.

Our alumni and their love first for Christ and then for Bryan College keeps me energized and going. Seeing what an impact BC has had on thousands of lives makes me love Bryan College even more.

During this Covid year, one way we have maintained connections with alumni is through our Roast & Roar events. The Roast & Roar is essentially a ZOOM class reunion. During these initial calls, we have been introducing alumni to our new President, Dr. Doug Mann ’92. They have an opportunity not only to catch up with each other but to also ask questions about what is happening at Bryan and what we have planned for the future.

Staying connected with our alumni this year has been a unique challenge, but through the Roast & Roar ZOOMS we have been able to reach alumni who would otherwise not be able to come to an in-person event. We have ZOOMED with alumni in Peru, Columbia, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and many other places! Feedback from Roast & Roar has been 100% positive, so next time you see one scheduled for your class, be sure to hop on!

Bryan College is alive and well, and God is doing a GREAT work here. We were given the green light to unmask about a month before the semester ended, and it was so great to see the full faces of all our awesome students!

There have been smiles, laughter, and a new sense of vulnerability since we do not have a piece of cloth to hide behind.

Pastor Tyler Ford is a 1996 graduate of Bryan College. He has been involved in church planting in Florida for 16 years and is currently the pastor of Christian Center Church of Marianna, FL, where he has served the past 7 years. He is married to Dr. Kristy (George) Ford ’94, and together they have two sons. Zack is a junior engineering major at Florida State University, and Jake is a senior at Marianna High School. In his free time, Tyler enjoys golf and family trips to the beach.

I

arrived in Dayton to begin working as the Reference Librarian and later as the Acting Director at Bryan College on a hot summer day in 1987. This Michigan gal had no AC in her car and had never driven around so many curves and over hills in her entire life.

My first introduction to southern hospitality and Bryan College was a delicious meal from Mrs. Van (cataloging librarian) and two hard working professors, Dr. Jack Traylor and Dr. Marty Hartzell, who helped unload my belongings, carrying them up to my second floor apartment.

Since the Lord never gave children to my husband and me, I have always said, “I have five-hundred children and send them home in the summer.”

What a joy and blessing it has been to have poured my life into Bryan College students for thirty-four years by mentoring, listening, praying, teaching, or just letting them hang out in our home for a quiet afternoon.

We have also had international students live with us during the summer.

This northern gal has grown to love the south and has even gotten used to being called Ma’am.

Although Michigan will always have my heart, I will be retiring and continuing to live in Dayton with my husband Paul who I met here.

f you ever have an opportunity to visit Jerusalem, a real treasure is to be found at Ali Baba Souvenir Shop at 14 Christian Quarter Road. Muslim proprietor Shaban Amer allowed Jim Anderson ’75, son of Dr. John Anderson, to put up a red & gold Bryan College pennant inside his shop where it is hanging with many other banners from American schools. Shaban sells T-shirts, jewelry, and a variety of unique souvenirs. He is known for his honesty and generosity in exchanging American money into shekels and other forms of currency.

Jim got to know Shaban while he was studying Biblical History and Geography at Jerusalem University College in 2002-2004. During their time in Jerusalem, Jim and his family exchanged money at Shaban’s Ali Baba Souvenir Shop weekly for groceries and school field trips. If you ever happen to visit, take a selfie of yourself with the Bryan College pennant or looking at something in the shop with Shaban, and you could win a $50 prize from the Bryan Book Store during Homecoming 2021 or 2022.

rett ’88 and Becky (Naff ) ’90 Roes met at Bryan College and were married in 1988. Over the course of their life together, faith and family relationships have been their primary focus and a great source of joy.

During the early years, Becky served the family primarily as a homemaker and then later as the co-founder of their business. Brett has had an extensive career in business with both private, corporate, and ministry organizations including Roes Rigging, Kraft Foods, Bryan College, The Chick-fil-a WinShape Foundation, and The Church at Northside. Today, Brett and Becky are the owners of Eagle Christian Tours, a motorcoach company that specializes in custom transportation for the education, tourism, and entertainment industry.

Brett and Becky have been happily married for 33 years. They currently reside in Rome, GA and are the proud parents of five children and six grandchildren.

Justin ’11 and Laura (Newport) ’07 Smith grew up within a few miles of each other in Spring City and Grandview, TN

respectively. Both graduated from Rhea County High School before attending Bryan College. While at Bryan, both Justin and Laura stayed heavily involved in local youth ministries and their churches. Justin had the opportunity to attend Focus Leadership Institute for a semester in Colorado Springs through Focus on the Family. The two were married in May of 2010.

Laura graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and taught at Spring City Elementary for 6 years. After their first child was born, she began her career as a stay-at-home mom. Justin graduated from Bryan with a degree in Exercise and Health Science with a K-12 teaching licensure and a minor in Bible. He went on to earn his Master of Education from Bethel University.

Justin has taught in the Rhea County School system for 10 years. He leads the soccer program at Rhea County High School as head coach of the men’s team and as an assistant for the women’s team. Justin and Laura have been able to use teaching and coaching to help develop students into men and women of character. Through the avenue of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), they are able to share explicitly about the hope they have found in Christ. Justin was recently awarded the Jim Sattler Leadership Award for the 2020-21 school year, the top award for coaches in the Chattanooga FCA region.

The Smiths are thankful to God for the work he has done in their lives and will continue to do. They are currently involved in foster care and serve at New Union Baptist Church in multiple roles. More than anything, they hope for God’s glory to be known in Rhea County and the world. The Smiths currently reside in Dayton, TN with their children: Macy Rae (8), Asher (6), Kaden (4), and foster son, Matthew (1).

im Margene ’70 comes from a family who is heavily invested in both preaching and teaching.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Bryan College and played as a starter for four years on the basketball team. He was part of the leadership that helped the Bryan Lions take their first serious steps into playoff recognition in a trip to the NCCAA. In his four years at Bryan, Margene scored 2,075 points. But success on the court was not his only area of influence. He was jokingly called “Mother” among his friends due to his efforts to point out the better choices along life’s path.

The role has stuck with him.

In 1970, Tim married fellow Bryan graduate (and head cheerleader) Vickie Rowsey. He took a job teaching History and Bible at Miami Christian School, where his ex-Bryan College Coach Jack Wells was involved. He was also able to assistant coach football and head coach basketball. In 1982, Tim expanded his ministry to students by taking groups on 2-3 week backpacking trips to the Sierras. Many of these kids had never seen the beauty of mountains before, and the trips have been continued by his teacher/coach sons.

From Miami, Tim and Vickie moved to Christian schools in Florida and Alabama. Between 1970 and 2017, Tim taught over 7,000 students and coached over a thousand athletes in basketball and cross country. By then, he was often called Papa. He also taught 11th grade Bible using a modified version of Dr. Jensen’s inductive method.

Nowadays, Tim is Grandpa to 6 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. He is still in contact with many former students who have become coaches, teachers, and even grandparents themselves. And last spring, four years after retiring, Tim was at the state track meet, leaning over the fence, encouraging the hurdlers, sprinters, distance runner, and pole vaulter. That last one was his oldest grandchild.

It’s family tradition—to teach, to lead, to train up.

r. David Gerard ’69 earned his Bachelor of Science in Natural Science from Bryan College and played basketball all four years he attended. Coach Wayne Dixon ’64 said of David Gerard, “I do not know of another athlete who is more deserving of being in the Hall of Fame.”

In 1969, he anchored the basketball championship against Lee University. He also led the team to the national finals against Azusa Pacific University. During his four years at Bryan, David scored double figures in every game. His fellow teammates described him as, “having a built-in intimidation factor, set high standards for himself, was known for his strength and control, best rebounder they ever saw, great defensive player, unselfish passer, and a scoring machine.”

In 1968, David married Ruth Sheppard ’71. Following graduation, David taught at Spring City High School for two years. He then served in the military and attended graduate school at University of Tennessee (UT) - Knoxville. He graduated in 1975 with his Master of Science and in 1980 with his Doctorate of Biology.

From 1980 on, David worked at UT - Knoxville in a variety of roles conducting research and mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. He was named Professor Emeritus of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in fall 2019 and passed away peacefully in August 2020.

ack ’93H and Karin (de Rosset) ’64 Traylor began serving Bryan athletics in 1987 when the head women’s basketball coach, Carolyn Mair, asked Jack to lead the team devotions before each game.

Soon after beginning this, Jack began announcing and Karin began taking court-side stats. The following year, they began volunteering for the Volleyball team as well, and the year after that, they added team travel to their duties under the leadership of Coach LaDonna (Robinson) Olson ’90.

Over the course of 10 seasons for Volleyball and 25 for Women’s basketball, serving as volunteer assistants for both teams became a major part of their lives. Jack planned trips at the beginning of each season and was soon asked to do the same for Men’s basketball. Karin did team laundry on overnight trips, and she soon became famous for providing fresh baked sweet rolls before each game and road trip. They had the honor of accompanying the women’s basketball team to the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa for 4 consecutive years from 2004 to 2007. In 2002, newly hired head baseball coach Preston Douglas asked Jack to become his assistant coach, an offer Jack gladly accepted and enjoyed doing for 6 seasons. Upon conclusion of their service to the teams in 2012, the Traylors estimated that they had accumulated at least 120,000 miles of Bryan College athletic travel over the years.

aylor (Fink) Goines ’15 came to Bryan College as a setter for the Volleyball team. During her tenure, she was named to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) All-Freshman team (2011), the AAC All-Conference first team (2012, 2013, 2014), the AAC All-Tournament team (all four years), and the AAC All-Academic team (2013, 2014). She was also recognized as an NAIA All-American (2012, 2013, 2014), AAC setter of the year (2012, 2013), and AAC player of the year (2014). Taylor helped her team to three regular season championships and two conference tournament championships. In 2013, Taylor was named to the AVCA NAIA All-Northwest region team and was recognized by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association as player of the week. She finished her career with 4,906 assists and 1,352 takes. She currently holds the record for most assists in Bryan College history.

Taylor graduated from Bryan with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Health Science with K-12 licensure. After graduation, she went on to coach at the University of Virginia at Wise, serving as assistant coach for 2 seasons from 2015 through 2017. In 2018, Taylor joined Providence Academy in Johnson City, where she currently serves as the administrative assistant for athletics, physical education instructor, and head varsity volleyball coach. She resides in Johnson City with her husband, Ryan.

Jennie and Alan married in Guatemala in 2010, and they now have 3 daughters (Bonnie, Amelia, & Emma). Rev. Daniel Hirschy ’41 was born in Berne, Indiana in 1918. He and his three older siblings grew up in Evans City, Pennsylvania, where Dan enjoyed playing football and basketball and running track and cross-country. He graduated from high school in 1936 and worked for a local farmer at $0.25 an hour to earn enough money to attend college. Dan’s parents, Pastor Norman and Esther Hirschy, were missionary-minded and ardent promoters of Bryan College. Through them and the evangelistic speakers who came to hold tent meetings in his home area, Dan was influenced toward foreign missionary service. He began his studies at Bryan College in 1937.

Funds were limited during Dan’s college experience. He worked waiting tables at the college, helping in the print shop, and firing the furnace. When his only pair of well-worn pants needed repair, he took cover in the furnace room where he worked, and carefully handed them out to his sister, Joyce, who was also at Bryan, to be mended. Dan learned by experience that God provides for the needs of those who follow His leading.

Over the course of his time at Bryan, Dan gained experience in Christian service by speaking at street meetings, holding services in country school houses, and preaching in chapels. He was a member of Bryan’s Foreign Missions Fellowship, from which students were called to serve the Lord in foreign missions.

During the last two years at Bryan, Dan began dating Eleanor Timpano, the girl who became his wife of sixty years. He met her during tent meetings, and they corresponded during his time at Bryan and dated during his summers at home. Having no car, he hitch-hiked the fifteen miles to her home in Frisco, PA. They were married

there on September 8, 1941. Dan and Eleanor knew God had called them to serve in Africa. Following their marriage, they spent a year at Fort Wayne Bible College receiving training. For two years, they worked in a mill in Eleanor’s hometown.

Dan did pulpit supply, and later they served together in mission work in Jenny’s Creek, WV. They were accepted for service in French Equatorial Africa (today the Chad Republic) in 1945, and following a year of deputation, they and their young daughter left New York City in May 1946.

Dan and Eleanor actively served the Lord a total of thirty-nine years, which included seven terms in Koumra. Three more daughters were added to their family during this time. In the spring of 1973, Dan and Eleanor left all four girls in the States and returned to Africa for what would be their final term. Four years turned out to be only four months. Placed under house arrest, they were given twenty-four hours to pack for eviction from Chad. They were detained in Ft. Archambault and loaded at midnight onto a truck for a 400-mile trip over unpaved road to the capitol. There, they and several other missionaries were accused of being subversives. They were flown to Paris and then home. Later, they learned that some of the national church leaders had been arrested, and, refusing to go back to their old ways, were shot and buried in a mass grave.

Following their return to the States, Dan and Eleanor accepted God’s call to work in Waterville, ME, where Dan and his two youngest daughters live now. Dan celebrated his 103rd birthday on April 21, 2021. He is currently the oldest living Bryan alumnus.

ather, I’m coming to you today with a heart of gratitude. Thank you for sustaining our school during what we pray was the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your watch care over our students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Father, we know that you oftentimes use difficulties to grow our faith and sharpen our resolve.

COVID reminded us that our trust must be in You alone. It reminded us of the importance to be still and know You are God. This season has taught us to be flexible as our plans often changed. The reduction in activity afforded the opportunity to reflect on the clutter we’ve created. Father, give us wisdom to discern between the meaningful and the ineffectual activities that consume our time.

As in Ephesians 1:18 where Paul was praying for the saints in Ephesus, I pray for each faculty, staff, and student body member that the eyes of our understanding will be enlightened; that we may know what is the hope of Your calling.

Father, you know that many of us have lost loved ones to this dreadful virus. Lord, I ask that you would lift our eyes and hearts to heaven that we might be reminded of and comforted by the promise of an eternity with You and all believers. Please strengthen those who are weary with grief.

Show us how to minister to our Bryan brothers and sisters in Christ who are hurting.

Father, we know of some in our Bryan community who are recovering from COVID. I ask for their continued healing and strength. For those currently in the heat of battle with the virus, I pray for strength for each day and for a full and soon recovery.

Finally, Father, I ask for your continued protection for Bryan College. May we use the abilities you have blessed us with to serve each other and bring glory to You alone. May we thrive, and may our influence spread for as long as we continue to put Christ Above All. To you, Lord, be all glory, honor and praise. Amen.
