2019 New Student Orientation Guide

Welcome, new Bryan Lions!

Hello and welcome to Bryan College! We have been praying for you and eagerly anticipating your arrival. I hope that your time at Bryan will be a time of excellent growth for you. It is our desire to see you grow spiritually, in your walk with Jesus Christ, and also to grow intellectually, socially, and in your physical well being.

We have planned what should prove to be an excellent next few days for you.

Some of the activities and events are directly aimed at helping you to get to know some of the people who have arrived with you. Some other activities and events are aimed at helping you to get acclimated to Bryan College and the surrounding area. Some are designed to help you understand what the Bryan community is all about. Still other events and activities are scheduled in order to prepare you to get started well with the academic year.

This booklet contains a schedule for the Orientation Week as well as some information about many of the events that are scheduled. Please check it to make sure that you are where you should be during the week.

We are excited that you are here. May God richly bless you as you seek after Him during this coming year.

9:05 AM This Is Bryan* Rudd Auditorium This session explores what Bryan College is about today! What does it look like to live in this community? What are the cultural expectations at Bryan College? These questions and more will be answered by continuing members of the Bryan community, both live and via recorded images.

10:45 – 11:15 AM Information Technology at Bryan* Rudd Auditorium This orientation will highlight what you need to know about our campus network, MyBryan portal, Wi-Fi access, and much more.

11:30 AM – 1:30 Lunch Dining Hall

12:30 – 3:30 PM Serving Starts Now* Around Dayton (All new students: gather at patio outside Dining Hall) Join your classmates for an afternoon introduction to our local community and our mission statement. The heart of being a Bryan Lion is being a servant of Christ. That doesn’t start once you graduate...it starts now! Come dressed in your Serving Starts Now t-shirt; tennis shoes are recommended.

10:07 – 10:37 AM Financial Services Session* Rudd Auditorium Mr. David Haggard, Director of Financial Aid This session is required of all new freshmen and transfer students and will provide an orientation to financial aid. There are things that you must do each year in order to remain eligible for financial aid and it is important to know what they are so you can be prepared.

7 – 7:45 PM Prime Time with the President* Rudd Auditorium Dr. Stephen Livesay, President Bryan College This time is set aside during Orientation Week for the incoming new students to hear directly from the President. Dr. Livesay will share principles of success that will help new students make the most of their time at Bryan.

8:30 – 9 AM Departmental Advisee Group Meetings* See your MyBryan account for advisor information. Meeting locations are listed on page 9.

All incoming new students (both transfer and freshmen) will meet with their respective academic departments in order to get an overview of what is expected of a major in that particular department, have an opportunity to interact with faculty in the department, meet other new students planning on the same major, and have the opportunity to ask general questions.

9 AM – Noon Advisors Open Offices Faculty Offices Following the group meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet individually with your academic advisor if you need to discuss specific issues or need to make changes to your fall schedule of classes. You will need to attend the prior Advisee Group Meeting in order to sign up for an appointment time.

These meetings will be held in individual faculty offices.

General information will also be provided with regard to developing your class schedule, making changes to your class schedule, and how to contact your academic advisor. If you need to speak with your advisor individually you will be able to set up an appointment with him/her at this time.

10 – 10:45 AM New Student Athletes* Main Gym (Required of all new intercollegiate student athletes, Varsity and JV)

These auditions are for the purpose of determining membership and scheduling in this year’s music groups, for piano skills placement, and for music lesson scheduling.

If you are interested in one of the official music department music ensembles (Chorale, Chamber Singers, Opera, Orchestra, Piano Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble), you must audition at the specified times. Results will be posted Friday evening by 5 p.m. and you can adjust your schedule on Monday as needed.

Classes begin Monday, so anyone wishing to be in a music performing group must audition as per the schedule. It is not necessary to prepare anything for auditions. Music lockers are available for your musical instruments and should be secured during audition times.

(Piano Skills Placement Test required for all incoming Music Majors/Minors, Worship Arts Majors and those desiring piano lessons for elective credit. Sign up in advance of your time at Rudd 302)

11:30 – 1:30 Lunch Dining Hall 1:30 – 3:30 PM Library Lemonade Launch Library The library is destined to be an integral part of your college career. Not only will it be a place of study for you, it will also be the source of your research for all the college papers you’ll write! Catch a glimpse of what the library has to offer you.

Stop by for a refreshing cup of lemonade, meet the library staff, and compete for prizes in an interactive life-size game of Library Trivial Pursuit.

3:30 – 5 PM Auditions for Fall Hilltop Players Brock Hall The Hilltop Players will hold auditions for their fall production on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m in Brock Hall. Call backs are scheduled for Monday 4–6 p.m.

We have a great season planned and would like to encourage everyone interested in this excellent opportunity to develop your acting (or backstage) skills.

Sarah Cheatham Junior Major: Psychology Hometown: Tazewell, TN Advice: “My advice would be to be vulnerable. Starting college can be overwhelming, but everyone at Bryan—the staff and the students—are so welcoming and want to get to know you, so don’t be afraid to try new things & meet new people!”

Evvie Hunter Senior Major: Health Science (Nursing) Hometown: Middleton, TN Advice: “College is full of fun and such wonderful times; however, it’s also full of several challenges. Take the challenges as a time for you to grow as a person and grow in your walk with the Lord.”

Savannah Bitterling, Senior Major: Theatre Hometown: Nashville, TN Advice: “One thing that I would like to stress to new students is to try things. Go to group information meetings, serve with PCI, take a late night Sonic run with friends, audit a class, audition for a show, or go to a sports game. There are so many things that college has to offer, and there is only a short time to participate in everything! So jump in and take advantage of it!”
