Reluctant euphoria Het is met gemengde gevoelens dat we u de nieuwe BRUZZ Select voorstellen. Fier zijn we zeker. Opgelucht ook, want we hebben de publicatie ervan verschillende keren uitgesteld, wachtend tot de deuren van de cultuurhuizen opengingen. Nu het zover is, zouden we het willen uitschreeuwen, euforisch bijna. Alleen durven we nog niet goed, verkrampt als we zijn door het aanhoudende gejojo dat de cultuursector de afgelopen maanden in zijn greep hield. Noem het een vorm van ingehouden culturele knaldrang. Kampt u ook met dat gevoel? Dan komt deze BRUZZ Select net op tijd. U hebt een overzicht in handen van meer dan 100 theaterstukken, concerten, tentoonstellingen en films, waarvan onze cultuurredactie me op het hart drukte dat het stuk voor stuk aanraders zijn. Kortom: de Brusselse cultuursector is klaar voor de lente, en dank zij deze BRUZZ Select u nu ook. Geniet ervan. NL

C’est avec des sentiments mitigés que nous vous présentons ce nouveau BRUZZ Select. On peut dire que nous sommes fiers. Et un peu soulagés aussi, car nous avons reporté sa publication plusieurs fois, en attendant le lever de rideau sur la scène culturelle. Maintenant que c’est fait, nous aimerions le crier haut et fort. C’est quasi l’euphorie. Seulement, nous n’osons pas encore, les nerfs tendus suite au yoyo sans fin des mesures anti-covid imposées ces derniers mois au secteur culturel. On pourrait parler d’une envie irrépressible de se défouler culturellement. Vous partagez ce sentiment ? Alors ce nouveau BRUZZ Select arrive à point nommé. Il offre un aperçu de plus de 100 pièces de théâtre, concerts, expositions et films, qui sont tous des incontournables selon notre rédaction culturelle. It is with mixed feelings that we present this new edition of BRUZZ Select. We are certainly very proud of it, and somewhat relieved too, as we have had to postpone the publication several times whilst waiting for the doors of our cultural centres to reopen. Now that the time has finally come, we would like to shout it out, almost euphorically. But we do not yet dare to, on account of the persistent set-backs over Covid that over the last few months have befallen the cultural sector. Maybe it is due to a reluctant urge for culture. If you feel the same, this new edition of BRUZZ Select comes perfectly on time. It offers an extensive overview of more than 100 stage plays and performances, concerts, exhibitions and films, all of which come highly recommended by our team. In short: the Brussels cultural sector is ready for spring, and thanks to this new BRUZZ Select, so are you. Enjoy it.

L’isolement forcé signifie misère pour certains, ressourcement pour d’autres. Damon Albarn s’est rendu en Islande, où il a un pied-à-terre. Na een oorverdovende stilte van twaalf jaar nam het Noorse tweeverbond tussen Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe in 2021 zijn vinger eindelijk van de pauzeknop met het album Peace or love, een zachte pleister voor een gehavende wereld. ‘Je veux faire partie de la beauté et non du problème’ FR/ Apparu en 2014 du côté de Chicago, l’emblème International Anthem est le port d’attache des meilleures productions de la planète jazz. Repaire de disques signés Angel Bat Dawid, Irreversible Entanglements ou Ben Lamar Gay, le label est aussi, et surtout, la maison-mère de la trompettiste jaimie branch, figure de proue d’un free-jazz retrouvé, moderne et casse-cou à souhait. Héritière d’Ornette Coleman ou Don Cherry, l’Américaine s’est révélée à la faveur d’une série baptisée Fly or Die (déjà deux volumes et un live). « Au-delà des albums, il s’agit surtout d’un groupe formé à New York par quatre personnes venues de Chicago », explique jaimie branch. « Le bassiste Jason Ajemian, le violoncelliste Tomeka Reid et le batteur Chad Taylor m’accompagnent dans cette aventure. » Dans le second volet de Fly or Die, la trompettiste retient son souffle pour mieux élever la voix. Véritable diatribe à l’encontre des discours racistes et des dérapages policiers, le morceau ‘Prayer for Amerikkka’ déglingue les piliers vacillants d’une société rompue au capitalisme. « Je suis une personne vivante, consciente. J’aime mes semblables. Observer l’injustice et rester sans voix, c’est une forme d’acceptation de la violence. Je veux mettre des faits en lumière, faire partie de la beauté et non du problème. » Avant son passage à l’AB dans le cadre du festival BRDCST, jaimie branch a enregistré quelques compos en compagnie de Yonatan Gat et des Medicine Singers. « Ce sont des musiciens incroyables, qui représentent une voix unique, essentielle, dans l’Amérique contemporaine. Ce sont des Amérindiens, de dignes héritiers d’un peuple et d’une culture, que les blancs ont tenté d’éradiquer il y a tant d’années. C’est une musique importante. Il faut donc tendre l’oreille et rester à l’écoute. Car notre collaboration devrait donner jour à de nouveaux sons. » Toujours plus libres, assurément. Enregistrées sur l’album APHEXionS, les versions proposées par Doriant Dumont entretiennent des liaisons avec Chopin et Satie. De quoi transformer une rave party en science des rêves. BRANFORD MARSALIS EN/ MUSICAL SPLITS... Branford Marsalis, perhaps best known for his lyrical soprano sax in Sting’s “Englishman in New York”, once founded the funk group Buckshot LeFonque and led Jay Leno’s house band, but in the past decades, he has spontaneously returned to his first loves: jazz and classical music. ...IN ONE WEEKEND. During his residency in Bozar, Marsalis does both solos and play with his jazz quartet, but it is the world première of “Cassandra”, an arrangement of one of his own jazz songs by Vince Mendoza and which he will perform with the Belgian National Orchestra, that we are particularly looking forward to. De Canadese singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman maakt al meer dan tien jaar muziek als The Weather Station, maar pas vorig jaar brak ze door met Ignorance, een plaat waarop ze klimaatrouw verbindt met de wijsheid van Joni Mitchell en de panache van Fleetwood Mac. STERRENKIJKER. De sessies voor Ignorance, een plaat die hoog in de eindejaarslijstjes eindigde, waren zo vruchtbaar dat Lindeman er een

Na twee seizoenen zonder livepubliek palmt het Klarafestival opnieuw de hoofdstad in. Met zinnenprikkelende klassieke muziek in zowat elke concertzaal die Brussel rijk is, en uiteraard in zijn beproefde scheepscontainers voor intieme een-op-eenconcerten. — JASPER CROONEN Het coronavirus en al zijn varianten hielden het Klarafestival stevig in de greep. Telkens weer viel het muziekfeest samen met een nieuwe besmettingspiek. Na een afgelaste en een virtuele editie is saamhorigheid nu het welverdiende devies: Let’s Stick Together. En ook wij kunnen niet wachten om opnieuw te blijven plakken. De aanslepende muziekhonger maakt dat het festivalprogramma een dik belegde boterham is, met supersterren op het podium en achter de pupiter. Piano-icoon Maurizio Pollini streelt de toetsen met Schumann en Beethoven, Vladimir Jurowski wuift zijn baton voor het legendarische Bayerisches Staatsorchester in een Frans-Brits programma. Een jonge generatie muzikanten staat te trappelen in het laureatenconcert van kamermuziekwedstrijd Supernova. Eregast van het festival is thuiszanger Reinoud Van Mechelen (foto), die zijn kristallijne tenorstem twee keer laat weergalmen: in een avond orkestliederen, en in Charpentiers Te Deum, dat veel meer te bieden heeft dan de generiek voor het Eurovisiesongfestival. Naast deze crème de la crème karnt het Klarafestival weer de boter van nieuw repertoire.

Het accent ligt daarbij steeds duidelijker op visuele voorstellingen en modern muziektheater. Josse De Pauw en Frederik Neyrinck schreven met Rhapsody een ode aan het denken, gebaseerd op het filosofische VPRO-programma Van de schoonheid en de troost; de jonge theatermaker Mien Bogaert schept een indrukwekkende video-installatie met pantoffelhelden in neon ondergoed en een papiergekroonde Peer Gynt; en het avant-gardegitaarkwartet Zwerm werkt samen met Walpurgis-huisregisseur Stef Depover aan een muzikaal verhaaltje voor het slapengaan. Maar zelfs met zo onnoemelijk veel muziek in zo onnoemelijk veel Brusselse speelplekken, breekt het Klarafestival naar aloude traditie ook uit de steriliteit van de concertzaal. Zijn pop-upbox reist opnieuw door het gewest voor intieme muziek belevingen, en met het musikaa-project wil het festival zich meer dan ooit verankeren in de hoofdstad. Een jaar na haar debuutsingle is Olivia Rodrigo een van de meest beluisterde popartiesten van de planeet. In Vorst Nationaal mag ze haar troon opeisen als America’s next pop queen. — TOM ZONDERMAN 43 miljoen luisteraars, and counting. 1,3 miljard streams voor haar hit ‘Drivers license’. Spotify en andere streamingdiensten liegen er niet om: Olivia Rodrigo is een van de grootste namen in het even etherische als verslavende spectrum van de popmuziek. Ondanks die duizelingwekkende cijfers is de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter en actrice misschien nog geen household name, ze is dan ook nog maar achttien. Rodrigo pikte de aandacht op nadat ze op haar dertiende was beginnen te acteren in de Disney-series Bizaardvark en High school musical: the musical: the series. Thuis in Californië groeide ze op terwijl Green Day, Pearl Jam en No Doubt door de ouderlijke huiskamer schalden. Dankzij countrymuziek en Taylor Swift begon ze zelf songs te schrijven. Het was haar debuutsingle ‘Drivers licence’ die haar een jaar geleden vol in de spotlights plaatste. Die break-upsong is even klef als clever. Rodrigo vertelt hoe ze net haar rijbewijs haalde en door de suburbs tuft, iets waar ze altijd van droomde met haar ex – volgens speurneuzen met te veel tijd is dat Joshua Bassett, haar love interest in

High school musical. Ze vraagt zich af of hij ooit écht om haar heeft gegeven en wat hij ziet in die blondine. “How can I ever love someone else?” zucht haar gebroken tienerhart. Muzikaal zit Rodrigo op de wip tussen glimmende pop en indierock, in de slipstream van Lorde, Alanis Morissette en Taylor Swift. Net als die laatste zouden we Rodrigo graag eens zien samenwerken met Aaron Dessner van The National. Het liedje prijkt intussen op Rodrigo’s debuutalbum Sour. ‘It was love at first conversation’ EN/ Meet the musical tandem Charlotte Adigéry and Boris Zeebroek, alias Bolis Pupul. Their Topical Dancer is an album for body and soul. The dance floor never sounded more alive. Bolis Pupul: “We met on the set of Felix van Groeningen’s film Belgica, we were both in a fictional band. Stephen and David Dewaele of Soulwax composed the soundtrack and were so impressed by Charlotte that they invited her to their studio, where I regularly did work. They paired us up. They certainly know people because it clicked immediately and after a few days we already had a handful of songs ready.” It was love at first conversation, Charlotte Adigéry adds: “But platonic. Boris gives me energy. Suddenly, the musical soulmate I had been looking for was there.” On Topical Dancer, the pair does something not many have done: they bring current themes such as racism and sexual harassment to a place where escapism reigns supreme. Adigéry: “We wanted to describe our world more than we had done on our first EP Zandoli. Topical Dancer is the result of hours of often profound conversations between Boris and I in the studio about the most diverse, but often sensitive topics. We first thought it was a cool play on words, it was only later that we realised that this balance between the cerebral and the instinctive was quite applicable. A journalist from the newspaper De Morgen told me that she was dancing along to “Blenda” in the kitchen, but got a little uncomfortable when she suddenly heard me sing: ‘Go back to your country where you belong.’ I thought that was a nice compliment.” The icing on the cake: everything is spiced up with a dose of humour. “We can’t chat even for an hour without making a joke,” Pupul laughs. “The heavier the issue, the more we feel the need to make light of it. It would help if we all took ourselves a little less seriously, in particular in times of polarisation when everything is super-sensitive.” Adigéry: “We do avoid ridiculing or simply laughing things off. ‘It’s as if you observe the scenes from outer space’

EN/ Like a day at the beach that never ends. There are parasols, deckchairs, beach towels. Some people sunbathe, while others do yoga, read a book or build sandcastles. Somewhere between an installation and an opera, Sun & Sea (Marina) represented Lithuania at the 2019 Venice Biennale, won the public’s votes and was awarded the Golden Lion. One of the unique aspects of the piece is that the spectators look down on the stage from a gallery, making it seem like an inaccessible dream. “It seemed to us the best way to show bodies that were lying down from the front without the view being distorted by perspective. The distance also makes it feel like you are viewing the performance through a frame. And it is as if these people, absorbed in very mundane tasks, belong to another place that we are observing from outer space,” explains Rugilé Barzdziukaité, the director. The different monologues that are sung are woven from individual stories and reflections and are tinged with a dull fear of the approaching environmental disaster. “There is a paradox between the music, which is light and poppy, the highly colourful sets, and the libretto, which is dark and ironic, resulting in a work that is neither joyful nor sad, in which melancholy is undoubtedly the connecting thread,” says Vaiva Grainyté, the author of the libretto. The cast includes professional singers and locally recruited performers. “We want to include a variety of physical builds, ages, and backgrounds. They add an element of documentary and bring their own characteristics and mannerisms that can sometimes translate into unpredictable behaviour.” Completed before the pandemic and the recent environmental disasters, the work resonates even more profoundly now. “You get the impression that some parts of the text spoke of a future that is now the present, but people have not really changed that much and are in a hurry to return to their old ways,” observes the composer Lina Lapelyté. In Flemish primitives van Action Zoo Humain en Chokri Ben Chikha krijgt de Vlaamse excellentiezucht de vorm van een talentenjacht, waarin acht jonge Vlamingen een ratrace lopen. — MICHAËL BELLON Acteur, danser, choreograaf en regisseur Chokri Ben Chikha is artistiek leider van het Gentse gezelschap Action Zoo Humain, dat voorstellingen maakt met tekst, dans, muziek, een politieke en soms ook documentaire insteek. Dat deze compagnie niet bang is voor enige controverse bewijzen bewerkingen van Michel Houellebecq als Platform en Onderworpen, en het beladen Métisse, over koloniale dubbelbloedkinderen. Als historicus en als lid van ‘de enige familie met Noord-Afrikaanse roots in Blankenberge’ is Ben Chikha ook geïnteresseerd in de Vlaamse geschiedenis en in kwesties als identiteit en migratie. In 2001 trok hij al de aandacht met Bruine suiker, zijn bewerking van Hugo Claus’ sociaal bewogen toneeltekst Suiker over Vlaamse arbeidersmigratie. In Brussel kennen we hem ook nog goed van bij de KVS in de jaren 2000, toen nog met het gezelschap Union Suspecte, waar ook zijn broer Zouzou Ben Chikha, Ruud Gielens, Mourade Zeguendi en Haider Al Timimi deel van uitmaakten. Met de trilogie De Leeuw van Vlaande-

ren, Onze Lieve Vrouw van Vlaanderen, en Broeders van liefde joegen ze toen Vlaams Belang op de kast. Ook recenter raakte Action Zoo Humain de Vlaamse volksaard, en nu neemt het gezelschap in Flemish primitives de Vlaamse excellentiezucht onder de loep. In 2021 vaardigde België voor de wereldtentoonstelling in Dubai een groep jonge artiesten af voor een project rond ‘Vlaams meesterschap’. In het spoor van Jan van Eyck en Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, van Brueghel en Rubens tot Alain Platel en Dries Van Noten toonden ze hoe het beeld van Vlamingen als ploeterende plantrekkers in de modder kan worden bijgesteld. In het verlengde organiseert Flemish primitives nu een soort talentenjacht waarin acht jonge Vlamingen, die alleen hun drang naar succes en hun migratieachtergrond delen, deelnemen aan de ratrace naar succes. Que veut dire être flamand aujourd’hui ? Le chorégraphe Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, né à Anvers de père marocain, répond en s’entourant du plasticien Hans Op de Beeck et du musicien Floris De Rycker dans un spectacle intitulé Vlaemsch. — GILLES BECHET À une époque de crispation nationaliste et de fermeture des frontières, l’artiste qui s’est produit de Paris à Séoul ou de Barcelone à Sydney avec l’étiquette de flamand, a senti le besoin d’affirmer sa vision fluide de l’identité. Pour ce spectacle, il a rassemblé autour de lui le plasticien Hans Op de Beeck et le musicien Floris De Rycker. Ensemble, ils ont regardé vers le XVe siècle, âge d’or culturel et économique de la Flandre, où des « fiamminghi » parcouraient l’Europe pour répondre aux demandes de leurs commanditaires laïques et religieux éblouis par leur peinture ou leur musique polyphonique. Des artistes qui, à l’époque déjà, ne craignaient pas l’expérimentation, travaillaient de manière internationale et étaient ouverts aux influences étrangères. L’identité assimilée pour certains à l’origine géographique est pour Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui indissociable de ces influences et enrichissements divers. « Certains peintres ont en effet travaillé en Flandre, mais peut-être avaient-ils

presque tout appris en Italie, en Espagne ou aux Pays-Bas ? Bien qu’il ait existé de très nombreuses connexions artistiques en Europe, s’étendant souvent très loin, certains en Flandre ressentent néanmoins le besoin de prétendre : ‘Non, non, cela vient bien d’ici.’ Il faut que cela ait pris racine dans la glaise flamande. Tandis que toute notre culture a subi de si fortes influences de l’étranger. » Paradoxalement aussi, quand l’identité est mise en doute parce qu’on ne porte pas un nom suffisamment flamand, ou manipulée par ceux qui voudraient la rigidifier, il peut être salutaire de regarder vers le passé, un passé, bien plus fluide dans toute sa richesse et sa complexité que ce qui émerge des souvenirs rances des uns et des pages jaunies des livres d’Histoire des autres.

Championne du Monde de krump (inspiration spirituelle du hip-hop) dans la catégorie « krump vs X » et ambassadrice de la discipline en Belgique, la danseuse originaire de Verviers s’est fait un nom aussi bien sur la scène urbaine que contemporaine à travers des collaborations avec l’artiste visuel français Clément Cogitore ou encore l’autrice et slameuse bruxelloise Joëlle Sambi (avec qui elle partage le titre d’artiste associée au Théâtre National depuis la nomination de Pierre Thys en mai 2021 comme directeur). Multipliant les projets en Belgique et à l’étranger, Hendrickx navigue avec puissance entre le freestyle (elle est la fondatrice de son propre collectif, la fam Drickx Konzi) et la création artistique. « On s’exprime autrement à travers un battle qu’à travers une création», dit la krumpeuse. « La création permet d’amener un vrai propos sur scène. » Après To Be A Slave, mettant en scène huit krumpers internationaux et trois musiciens live, Hendrickx mettra à nouveau le feu au Festival Lezarts Danses Urbaines avec une toute nouvelle création. Dans Blind, elle s’interroge sur notre liberté de mouvement et de pensée dans une société toujours plus avide de contrôle. « Ces questions me travaillaient déjà avant le confinement, la pandémie a confirmé le semblant de liberté dans lequel nous évoluons.» Associée au danseur libérien Dexter Pierre Belleka, les deux chorégraphes confrontent leurs visions de la société avec quatre autres danseurs krump en provenance de Belgique, d’Espagne et de France. « Le krump se marie à toutes les thématiques mais il est vrai que sa puissance libératrice et émotionnelle permettait d’exprimer parfaitement notre propos, qui est la volonté d’échapper à un système quel qu’il soit. » Et parce que la culture krump ne peut s’envisager sans musique, trois musiciens belges et un beatmaker de Paris assurent la composition de Blind. Kenneth Branagh (61) was knighted ten years ago, and with good reason. In the 1980s, he took the British theatre world by storm with adaptations of Shakespeare plays. In the 1990s, he did exactly the same with the film world. Henry V and Hamlet earned him several Oscar nominations. In Much Ado About Nothing, he directed not only himself but also his then-wife Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton and Keanu Reeves. After his divorce from Emma Thompson and bad reviews for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, his phenomenal triumphs came to an end. But the multi-talented man never had to go without a job. As an actor, he appeared in the Will Smith-vehicle Wild Wild West and in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, four seasons of the British detective series Wallander as well as in Dunkirk and Tenet, the last two by Christopher Nolan. His role as acting legend Laurence Olivier in My Week with Marilyn earned him an Oscar nomination. A new chapter began when he completed the superhero film Thor for Marvel. From then on, Hollywood could hire him for large, impersonal

productions such as a live-action version of Cinderella. After the success of Murder on the Orient Express, he was asked to stick on another majestic moustache and once more portray Hercule Poirot in a murder mystery by Agatha Christie and filmed by himself. The pandemic delayed the release of Death on the Nile and the film only came out last month. That the press finds the film beautiful but corny and empty is of little concern to Branagh, who reinvented himself during the pandemic. He poured his childhood memories into a screenplay that he filmed, to music by Van Morrison, with Judi Dench and a heap of young talent. The exceptionally compelling Belfast lets you experience, in black and white, a ten-yearold living through the Troubles, the excessive Northern Irish violence between Protestants and Catholics. But meanwhile, girls have to be seduced, grandparents visited and films re-enacted. Branagh has a claim for the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

ANIMALS NL/ BEROEMD. Nabil Ben Yadir, wereldberoemd in Brussel sinds het succes van Les barons, kan ook ernstig uit de hoek komen, en wel met een film die oproept tot respect voor het leven en voor alle mensen, ongeacht hun geaardheid. BEESTIG. Animals is gebaseerd op de waargebeurde, gruwelijke haatmoord op de jonge gay moslim Ihsane Jarfi. Homohaat is tien jaar na het drama nog alomtegenwoordig en dat maakt Yadirs film urgent, maar zijn compromisloze aanpak kan gevoelige zielen afschrikken. Vogt était à son tour dans la chaise du réalisateur pendant le tournage de The Innocents. LES ENFANTS, INNOCENTS ? Tous les parents le savent bien, mais dans ce film, les enfants ont des pouvoirs, obscurs de surcroît, qu’ils n’utilisent pas seulement pour faire des bêtises. IMPOSANTE IMAX. Met Notre-Dame brûle waagt Annaud zich aan een peperdure IMAX-productie die moet helpen om het trauma van 15 april 2019 te verwerken. De film focust op een ploeg reddingswerkers die op die dramatische dag de strijd

Nobody has to know est un drame romantique émouvant sur l’identité et le désir, qui se déroule sur une île écossaise isolée. Phil est un Belge qui souffre d’amnésie suite à une attaque cérébrale. La fille de son patron s’occupe de lui, mais lui ment aussi en lui disant qu’ils étaient amants, ce qui « ravive » la flamme. En fait, c’est un film qui appelle au silence. INFOS. 23/3 -ACTION-

‘Je veux trouver ma propre voie’ FR/ Est-ce l’année de la révélation pour la jeune actrice bruxelloise Mara Taquin (24 ans), qui est née et a grandi à Saint-Gilles ? Cette année, on la verra jouer aux côtés de l’actrice française Adèle Exarchopoulos dans la production franco-belge Rien à foutre d’Emmanuel Marre et Julie Lecoustre, et interpréter l’une des protagonistes de La Ruche, le premier long-métrage du réalisateur belge Christophe Hermans. Elle joue également dans le western érotique de science-fiction After Blue du cinéaste expérimental Bertrand Mandico. « Je ne sais pas si c’est l’année de la révélation », dit Mara Taquin. « C’est l’année où je me sens plus légitime en tant qu’actrice et où j’ai aussi l’impression de pouvoir faire des choix artistiques plus clairs. Mais je veux continuer à placer la barre toujours plus haut. » Les choses vont bon train pour Taquin, dont la carrière d’actrice a commencé par hasard, lorsqu’elle a été repérée dans son école secondaire par la réalisatrice bruxelloise Camille Mol. Au lieu de faire des études de théâtre, Taquin décide de commencer directement à travailler et de se perfectionner sur les plateaux de tournage. Elle dit qu’elle apprend beaucoup en observant les autres acteurs expérimentés tels que Vincent Cassel et, plus récemment, Adèle Exarchopoulos – dont elle incarne la jeune sœur dans Rien à foutre. Non pas qu’elle considère ces stars comme des exemples à suivre aveuglément. « Je les admire, mais je veux trouver ma propre voie. » Dans La Ruche, elle tient pour la première fois un rôle principal dans un long-métrage, celui d’une des trois sœurs devant vivre avec le trouble bipolaire de leur mère célibataire. « C’est la première fois que j’ai pu approfondir autant un personnage, je connaissais si bien le rôle que je pouvais montrer toute la palette d’émotions. In this action-comedy, he plays (an exaggerated version of) himself, who accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan, but is then recruited by the CIA. LAUGHERS GONNA LAUGH. Many film buffs love to make fun of Cage, but perhaps he has the last laugh by expertly mocking his own reputation here. VORTEX FR/ DIVISÉ. La démence n’est pas vraiment un sujet joyeux. Mais tout comme Florian Zeller avec The Father, Gaspar Noé réussit à refléter l’état de confusion dans lequel sombre la personne démente. Une expérience obsédante et inoubliable, en partie due à un split screen (ou écran divisé) inventif. FÊTÉ. Le réalisateur de films cultes et provocateurs comme Irréversible, Enter the Void et Climax surprend avec ce rappel discret et poignant de la fugacité de la vie. NATURAL LIGHT NL/ GEEN KNUFFELBEER. Wanneer keek je voor het laatst een Hongaarse film, laat staan een Hongaarse oorlogsfilm? Deze werd op het Filmfestival van Berlijn gelauwerd met de Zilveren Beer voor beste regie. BOERENPSALM. Natural light speelt zich af aan het Oostfront tijdens Wereldoorlog II en ligt in de lijn van eightiesklassieker Come and see en het recente The painted bird. Maar debutant Dénes Nagy legt eigen accenten in zijn authentieke reconstructie van het Hongaarse plattelandsleven, en in zijn aandacht voor de schoonheid van flora en fauna als stille getuigen van de oorlogsgruwel. DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS EN/ REMEMBER DOCTOR STRANGE? Not Dr Strangelove, but Doctor Strange, the main character in the eponymous movie from 2016. You might also have seen him in the recent Spider-Man: No Way Home. The good doctor is back and ready for another adventure, together with his loyal friend Wong. REALLY, ANOTHER SUPERHERO MOVIE? Okay, I hear you, this is indeed the 28th (!) film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But another dive in this world of Marvel can be a good way to leave the madness of reality behind for a while. Straks kraakt ze zielen in The Northman, een veelbelovende vikingsage van Robert Eggers. — NIELS RUËLL De ene dag ben je een onbezorgde zestienjarige die de hond uitlaat en voorbij het Londense winkelwalhalla Harrods wandelt. De volgende ben je een filmster. Zo sprookjesachtig verging het Anya Taylor-Joy. Haar leven zit in een stroomversnelling sinds ze vlak bij Harrods werd aangeklampt door Sarah Doukas, de modellenagent die Cara Delevingne ontdekte en Kate Moss van straat plukte. Tijdens haar derde fotoshoot brengt een acteur uit Downton Abbey haar in contact met zijn agent. Die helpt haar aan een hoofdrol in The witch, een Amerikaanse horrorfilm over een puriteinse familie die in de zeventiende eeuw wordt verbannen naar een bos met een heks. Amper achttien is ze wanneer ze de oceaan overvliegt om in een bos op zes uur rijden van de beschaving te doen alsof ze de rebelse dochter van een godsdienstwaanzinnige is en met bokken kan praten. “En ik was niet eens bang. Ik voelde me daar perfect op mijn plaats,” zo vertelde Taylor-Joy me twee jaar geleden. De horrorfilm in kwestie was geen wegwerpproduct, maar het sfeervolle en krachtige regiedebuut van Robert Eggers, de stilist die vervolgens Robert Pattinson en Willem Dafoe liet zuipen en

George Miller ziet in haar de geknipte kandidate voor de hoofdrol in een spin-off rond Furiosa, de sensatie uit zijn laatste Mad Max-film. Op Furiosa is het nog twee jaar wachten, maar er kan wel al afgeteld worden naar haar tweede samenwerking met Robert Eggers. The Northman is een vikingsage met Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman en Björk. Het scenario werd bedacht door Sjón, de IJslandse dichter die nog met Björk in The Sugarcubes heeft gespeeld. The Cannes Festival awarded his leading role in the paedophilia drama Jagten. James Bond fans saw him cry blood as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale and binge-watchers loved his erudite cannibal in the Hannibal series. As he has just excelled in two Danish blockbusters, Thomas Vinterberg’s haunting Druk and Anders Thomas Jensen’s sardonic Riders of Justice, we know what is to come: Hollywood stuff. The Dane trained in dance is acting in Indiana Jones 5 and is replacing Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. “I enjoy being part of these Hollywood productions. I grew up with that. No matter how good the Danish film industry is at the moment, we will never have the means for those big spectacles. Secondly, Denmark is a small country. If I shoot one film there a year, even that would be too much. ‘We don’t want to see that Mikkelsen’s face again,’ they would say. I can complain about that as much as I want, that’s what we are like. That is why I am happy for the opportunity to go to Hollywood or abroad on a regular basis. Then, when I return with pleasure, everyone is happy to see my mug again. It works perfectly for me.” Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third episode in a Harry Potter spin-off centred around Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). Apparus au début du XIXe siècle, ces théâtres miniatures sont restés longtemps très populaires. SILENCE EN COULISSES. L’exposition nous montre des planches d’origine, non découpées, ainsi que les différents éléments qui comprenaient les personnages, le décor, l’avant-scène, les coulisses et aussi des livrets avec les textes des succès de la scène. ‘Les gens ont envie de révéler des choses’ FR/ C’est avec la conviction que la poésie peut aider à parler des événements traumatiques et contribuer à guérir ensemble qu’est né le projet Rise Up: Poetic Memorial, un an après les attentats de Bruxelles. Année après année, se construit un mémorial de mots, fragiles et puissants à la fois. Des mots forgés, assemblés et tissés au cours d’ateliers avec des publics différents, souvent étrangers à l’écriture. Cette année, c’est Marie Darah qui encadrera ces ateliers du KVS avec les associations et organisations participantes. Premier.e champion.ne non binaire de Belgique et d’Europe de slam, iel a choisi comme thème d’écriture « Tabous ». « Les gens ont envie de révéler des choses. Je trouve ça important, mais ce n’est pas obligé d’être personnel. » En 2020, iel a publié Depuis que tu n’as pas tiré, un fiévreux flash-back dans l’instant suspendu d’un braquage, un flow de mots et de pensées qui suivent une déambulation dans un Bruxelles transfiguré et halluciné. Quand iel ne slame et n’écrit pas, Marie pratique des ateliers d’écriture, que ce soit avec Vie Féminine, Pianofabriek ou dans les écoles. L’écriture c’est comme la natation, il faut se lancer. « Pour aider les gens à plonger dans le bain, je donne un exercice très cadré avec beaucoup de contraintes. Souvent les filles s’en sortent mieux, parce qu’elles sont plus structurées, elles ont déjà plus réfléchi en raison de l’oppression qu’elles subissent. » L’écriture ouvre des portes. Marie s’en est rendu compte après des performances de slam. « Les gens m’écrivent pour me dire que c’est libérateur, qu’ils se sentent moins seuls. » Et l’échange se fait dans les deux sens. With To Paradise, American author Hanya Yanagihara has a successor to her bestseller A Little Life ready and she is coming straight to Flagey to talk about it. — MICHAËL BELLON Hanya Yanagihara was born in Los Angeles and now lives in New York where she, despite her status as an established writer, remains active as editor-in-chief of the lifestyle magazine of The New York Times. Yanagihara started out as a travel writer for magazines and in 2013 made her debut with the well-received novel The People in the Trees, in part inspired by the true story of Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, a revered American physicist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine who abused children. In 2015, Hanya Yanagihara made her international breakthrough with the Man Booker Prize-nominated novel A Little Life: a hard-hitting, tragic 700-page story starring Jude St. Francis and three New York friends, all with different backgrounds and life destinations. In 2018, Ivo van Hove and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam successfully adapted the novel about friendship, but above all about power, abuse, loneliness and self-destruction for the stage. Seven years later, millions of people worldwide

have read A Little Life and can start on the next seven hundred pages of its eagerly anticipated successor: To Paradise, a novel published in January. To Paradise seems to be just as thick and easy to read, but even more ambitious. In three parts, Hanya Yanagihara builds bridges between the New York of 1893, 1993 and 2093. These three separate stories are, of course, linked together with certain details but also with thematic lines to form a retro-futuristic epic about, once again, a whole host of major themes such as power, wealth and poverty, family ties and nation-building, utopian thinking, totalitarianism, resistance and love. A book that is automatically topical, if only because it also contains a persistent virus. Thanks to Passa Porta, Hanya Yanagihara will be exploring all this during a talk in Brussels. L’histoire de Vivian Maier offre matière à réflexion aux amateurs de photographie, aux romantiques et à ceux qui sont les deux. Bozar montre le visage de cette photographe mystérieuse dont l’œuvre fut longtemps inconnue. — MICHAËL BELLON Avant sa mort, presque personne n’avait entendu parler de Vivian Maier (New York, 1926 - Chicago, 2009). Elle a passé sa vie dans l’anonymat, une femme célibataire intellectuelle qui travaillait principalement comme nounou. Juste avant qu’elle ne s’éteigne en 2007, John Maloof achète des cartons contenant des rouleaux de pellicule et des négatifs ayant appartenu à Maier lors d’une vente aux enchères. Il commence à publier les photos sur Internet, et on connaît la suite. Les photographies prises par Maier avec son Rolleiflex ou son Leica n’étaient pas seulement de grande qualité. Elle en a pris plus de 100 000 au cours de sa vie – des instantanés de la vie quotidienne, mais aussi des images plus stylisées, en noir et blanc et en couleur. Maloof est parti à la recherche du reste de son œuvre, qui avait été dispersée lors de la vente aux enchères, il a développé des rouleaux de pellicule que Maier n’avait pas développés elle-même en raison d’un manque d’argent, et il a également réalisé le documentaire Finding

Vivian Maier, nommé aux Oscars. L’œuvre de Maier offre évidemment un large aperçu de la vie de la rue surtout, à Chicago, New York et Los Angeles, dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Mais l’exposition Vivian Maier: Autoportraits à Bozar a choisi de présenter plus de quatre-vingts autoportraits de Maier, une partie importante de son œuvre. Ainsi, l’exposition zoome sur la personnalité mystérieuse d’une photographe qui joue avec les reflets, les ombres, les perspectives et les doubles, nous montrant à maintes reprises cette femme extérieurement impassible, déterminée, mais concentrée et précise, avec son chapeau, sa coupe de cheveux courte, ses habits simples et son appareil photo autour du cou. ‘Centraal staan de muziek en het kenmerkende, zo herkenbare geluid van Toots’

NL/ Op 29 april 2022 zou Toots Thielemans 100 jaar zijn geworden. Een tentoonstelling die de nalatenschap van de wereldberoemde Brusselse jazzmuzikant organiseert, samen met de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KBR) en het Muziekinstrumentenmuseum (MIM), is een van de hoogtepunten van het feestjaar. Initiatiefnemer van het Tootsjaar 2022 is de vzw The Legacy of Toots Thielemans, die samen met de Private Stichting Toots Thielemans, en in samenspraak met Toots’ weduwe Huguette de nalatenschap van Toots beheert. “Aan dit feestjaar werken we al drie jaar,” zegt Veerle Van de Poel, die sinds 1996 manager was van Toots en nu bezieler is van de vzw en de stichting. “Toots en Huguette wilden dat na zijn overlijden alles zou samenblijven. Daarom werd zijn persoonlijke archief – bestaande uit platen, persoonlijke briefwisseling, partituren en nooit eerder gepubliceerd muziek- en beeldmateriaal – aan de KBR geschonken, terwijl zijn instrumenten een nieuwe thuis kregen in het MIM.” Voor Toots 100. The sound of a Belgian legend komt een selectie terug samen om voor het eerst aan het publiek te worden getoond in wat een belevingsexpo zou moeten worden in het prestigieuze kader van het Paleis van Karel van Lotharingen aan het Museumplein. Van de Poel: “Er zal een overzicht zijn van Toots’ leven en werk, maar centraal staat de muziek en het kenmerkende geluid van Toots, en waarom dat zo herkenbaar is. En natuurlijk gaan we in op zijn instrumenten: de harmonica’s waarop hij speelde en die Huguette verzamelde. En zijn gitaren zoals de Gibson waarmee hij vooral speelde. Daar kleeft nog een stickertje op van Dunderklumpen!, de Zweedse animatiefilm uit 1974 waarvoor hij de muziek maakte.” Aandacht is er ook voor de jazzgenres die Toots Thielemans speelde, en voor zijn samenwerkingen met wereldsterren uit andere genres zoals Quincy Jones, Peggy Lee en Sting.
