Des femmes et des rues Mercredi dernier, le conseil communal de Schaerbeek approuvait le changement de nom de la section de la rue d’Aerschot, entre l’avenue de la Reine et la rue des Palais. Les habitants de ce tronçon de la sulfureuse artère ne diront donc plus « J’habite rue d’Aerschot » mais bien « J’habite rue de Cologne ». Un détail ? Pour vous peut-être… mais pour eux cela veut dire beaucoup. En effet, les intéressés vivaient mal l’assimilation à une géolocalisation devenue synonyme de prostitution, alors que le segment urbain qu’ils occupent n’offre pas de droit de cité au plus vieux métier du monde. Faut-il comprendre « Cologne » comme « eau de Cologne », ce FR

parfum destiné à recouvrir les mauvaises odeurs corporelles ? Non, même si on peut sourire à l’évocation d’une sorte de nettoyage de surface, de morale des apparences. En réalité, « rue de Cologne » a été choisi car c’était le nom de la rue avant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il a été remplacé par « rue d’Aerschot » au sortir du conflit pour que tout un chacun se souvienne des bombardements allemands qui avaient ravagé la petite ville du Brabant flamand. Je pense qu’il y a quelque chose de dommage dans cet effacement, contraire au devoir de mémoire. Si vraiment, il faut opérer un changement, pourquoi ne pas en profiter alors pour donner un nom de femme ? On sait que le sujet

est d’actualité, à l’instar de la collective Noms Peut-Être! qui se bat pour la féminisation des rues de la capitale. Pour rappel, moins de 4% % d’entre elles promeuvent le féminin.

Malgré de timides avancées, dont la rue Malibran à laquelle on a rendu son prénom (Maria) en 2018 ou la création de l’artère Isala Van Diest, le combat est plus que jamais d’actualité. C’est d’autant plus dommage qu’il ne manque pas de candidates. Mes favorites ?

Electric Circus CREATIEF MET KARTON De Nederlanders Fred Abels en Mirjam Langemeijer vormen samen het straattheatergezelschap Electric Circus. De hele zomer reizen ze door Europa, en ergens aan het begin van hun reis passeren ze ook op het straattheaterfestival van Sint-Agatha-Berchem. Tijdens de vijftiende editie van dat Visueel Festival Visuel is van Electric Circus doorlopend de geanimeerde straattheaterinstallatie Headspace te zien, waarin de vaardigheden van de technisch aangelegde sculpturenmaker Fred en de artistiek begaafde poppenspeler en -maakster Mirjam samenkomen.

Headspace bestaat uit drie grote kartonnen hoofden waar telkens evenveel toeschouwers hun eigen hoofd in kunnen steken, voor een minispektakel van twee minuten. “Het is moeilijk om te zeggen wat er binnen in de hoofden allemaal gebeurt, want het is juist fijn dat mensen er verschillende verhalen over vertellen als ze er weer uit komen,” zegt Fred Abels. “Het is vooral een visuele ervaring, maar we vinden het heel belangrijk om te benadrukken dat er geen filmpje getoond wordt daarbinnen. Soms moeten we zelfs mensen die het gezien hebben daarvan overtuigen, omdat ze zich tegenwoordig blijkbaar niet meer kunnen voorstellen dat ergens geen beeldschermen met filmpjes aan te pas komen.”

Wat je als toeschouwer dan wel ziet, is de robottechnologie die Fred zelf in elkaar stak én programmeerde met zijn kompaan Rolf Meesters. “Een kleine microcomputer stuurt een universum van animatronics aan. Animatronics zijn systemen met servomotortjes, die door Jim Henson van The Muppet show werden bedacht om zijn poppen te laten “MET DEZE VOORSTELbewegen, en die later LING ZETTEN WE ONS ook in de filmindusAF TEGEN DE trie werden gebruikt om bijvoorbeeld SCHERMCULTUUR” dinosaurussen te animeren. Maar bij ons komt er dus geen film bij te pas, want we zetten ons een beetje af tegen de schermcultuur. De hoofden zijn zo ontworpen dat je je telefoon niet mee naar binnen kan nemen en in alle rust van je privévoorstelling kan genieten.”

Ondertussen worden ook de omstanders heel nieuwsgierig van het aparte zicht op die drie kartonnen hoofden, en vormt zich soms een lange rij. “Ook hen proberen we bezig te houden door nog andere sculpturen op te stellen op straat, waarover ze zich kunnen verwonderen en met ons praten.” — MICHAËL BELLON

The next generation

De populaire guinguette Bar Eliza gaat haar laatste seizoen in. Toch in haar huidige, geïmproviseerde vorm, met het sympathieke interieur van Wing Nuts Decor. In het najaar beginnen de renovatiewerken aan het paviljoen, waarbij de begane grond omgeturnd wordt tot een polyvalente ruimte met bar en een bovenverdieping wordt toegevoegd voor de parkwachters. Na Plazey (30/8 > 1/9) gaan de slingerlampen uit, maar tot dan kan u er behalve uw dorst lessen, ook workshops yoga en knutselen volgen, luisteren naar Radio Eliza en concerten bijwonen van onder meer Nonkel Tony (aka Hans Van Cauwenberghe) en Whocat. During Kunstenfestivaldesarts, the students of the P.A.R.T.S. dance school could be seen racing around the woods at Gaasbeek Castle in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s production Somnia. All 44 young choreographers and dancers of the twelfth generation of students have now put together a twelve-day festival to complete their programme. In total, the programme of GXII Festival features more than sixty (!) works – their own creations, but also pieces from De Keersmaeker’s repertoire, and new creations by Alain Franco, Ivana Müller, and Cristian Duarte. Don’t bother trying to find a common theme, just dive into the rich diversity. (MB)

En dan is er nog zijn heetste peper: Niveau4, dat dit jaar met Luie Louis en Miss Angel een vette slice ’t Stad naar de hoofdstad brengt.

‘Brussel toont gewoon heel veel liefde’

H

et is lang geleden dat ik nog zóóóveel adrenaline heb gevoeld,” hijgt Luie Louis op het plein voor concertzaal Het Depot in Leuven. “Wat. Een. Band!” Het rapgeweld van Niveau4 heeft twee dagen warmdraaien net besloten met een try-outshow die bewijst dat het tijdelijke ensemble een week voor Couleur Café vraiment chaud is.

Niveau4, het gelegenheidsproject van Couleur Café dat het urban talent van morgen verenigt wars van taal- en gemeenschapsgrenzen, is aan zijn vierde editie toe. Deze keer trekt het een XXL-jasje aan, voor het eerst kleuren twee livebands mee de set: Commander Spoon en Echt!, onbevreesde Brusselse jazzavonturiers die hun stuff kruiden met

Afrikaanse grooves, scheve hiphopbeats en funky elektronische gekte.

De try-outshow in Leuven toont meteen hun meerwaarde. Als een stel gebundelde armspieren – twee drummers! twee bassisten! twee toetsenisten! een (elektronische) saxofonist! – zien we de superband de prettig gestoorde urban pop van Juicy, de zwoele r&b van Eleven’ en de lakse dan wel loeiende rhymes van Jay MNG en zijn confraters Venlo, Luie Louis en Miss Angel een paar echelons hoger duwen. Vooral in de finale levert dat explosief spul op, met een publiek dat wild in het rond springt op dikke grooves, oosterse frullen en de stroomstoten van saxofonist Pierre Spataro. “It was amaaaazing,” kirt Miss Angel

terwijl ze na het concert langzaam afdaalt van cloud nine. “Nog veel beter dan tijdens de repetities de voorbije dagen.”

KROKANT Miss Angel en Luie Louis zijn twee namen die de komende jaren ongetwijfeld onze ether zullen kleuren. Samen zorgen ze voor een portie Antwerpse flavour in Niveau4.

De voorbije twee jaar lonkte Brussel enkele keren verleidelijk naar de Stad aan de Stroom. Blu Samu liet haar zonder blikken of blozen achter en ging bij de jongens van Le 77 hokken in Laken. Rapper Dvtch Norris waagde nog niet zo lang geleden ook de sprong.

“Brussel toont gewoon heel veel liefde,” zegt Angela Agyei aka Miss Angel wanneer we haar en Louis Wouters alias Luie Louis opzoeken in Bibliotheek Permeke, een paar straatlengtes van het Antwerpse Centraal Station. Ze wonen er beiden om de hoek, op de rand van de Seefhoek, maar kenden elkaar voor hun samenwerking in Niveau4 “vooral van zien.”

Luie Louis nestelt zich hier de komende weken tussen de boeken met zijn label Flatgebouw, en serveert daarbij optredens, spoken word en exposities. “Niet dat ik per se een boekenverslinder ben,” lacht hij terwijl hij zijn shirt van XXXTentacion in de plooi legt, “maar ik had als kind wel een gedichtenclub. Met Vanessa. Waarom ik

gedichten schreef ? Dat weet ik eigenlijk niet, ik was gewoon altijd shit aan het maken.”

Het is uit die shit, ook wel eens weloverwogen bundelingen van gedachten genoemd, dat zijn liefde voor rappen gegroeid is. “Ik ben al superlang bezig,” legt hij uit. “Op mijn dertiende heb ik hiphop ontdekt en merkte ik dat ik de gedichten die ik schreef ook op muziek kon zetten.

Vanaf mijn zestiende ben ik zelf dingen beginnen te producen, omdat er niemand was in België die goeie beats maakte. Of voor mij wilde maken. (Lacht) Misschien was ik gewoon te brak.”

Vijf jaar geleden, op zijn 22e, bracht Luie Louis zijn eerste album uit, met zijn toenmalige band Netwerk.

Ondertussen debuteerde hij solo met Love life Louis, met daarop een feature van de onvermijdelijke Brusselse rapkeizer Zwangere Guy, en vormde hij Roedel. “Mijn supergroep, zeg maar, met onder meer Mitxelena en Brakka Briesje, die ook al meededen op mijn soloplaat.” In het huis waar ze samenhokken, bedenken ze “zieke beats”. “We zijn daar een jaar geleden gaan wonen, puur om muziek te kunnen maken. Het huis is nog altijd kaal as fuck. (Lacht) We hebben twee ‘studio’s’. Voor de rest zitten we gewoon krokant te wezen.”

Euh... krokant?

LUIE LOUIS: (Lacht) Gewoon, the crusty life. Broke. Blut. Als artiest

Kamasi Washington! Lauryn Hill! Zwangere Guy! Couleur Café n’a pas besoin de canicule pour organiser un festival chaud bouillant. Son arme secrète reste Niveau 4 qui injecte cette année une dose anversoise à Bruxelles dans un format XXL. FR

overleven is niet eenvoudig. Daarom moet ik er hier en daar wat jobs bij nemen, zoals de streetwearwinkel die ik dadelijk moet gaan openen. Ik ben hier geld aan het verspillen!

(Lacht) Je leidt als muzikant een dubbelleven. Je weekends, de optredens en alles wat bij de muziek komt kijken, is super nice. Maar je komt constant weer in de realiteit.

En daar ben je nog altijd even blut.

MISS ANGEL: Exactly that! Ik heb de voorbije jaren op de meest uiteenlopende plekken gewerkt, van Kruidvat tot Urban Outfitters. Maar anderhalve maand geleden ben ik daarmee gestopt. Voorlopig toch. Ik heb geen zin om depressief te worden voor een job die helemaal mijn leven niet gaat worden.

We waren niet van de rijksten, maar ook niet straatarm. Ze is trots op mij, ik heb mij moeten bewijzen, maar nu ziet ze dat het serieus is.

‘Ghetto supahstar’ ging over de uitdaging die ik aanging met muziekmaken, een beetje teasend.

‘Money making mami’ is een song over women’s empowerment. Die clip heb ik gedraaid met (de van Mechelen naar Brussel verhuisde actrice en zangeres) Martha Da’ro en (de Brusselse fotografe en videoclipmaakster) Yaqine Hamzaoui in Griekenland. Wij zijn de drie musketiers. (Lacht) Dat was wel een statement: wij hoeven van niemand afhankelijk te zijn.

Wanneer wist je dat je muziek wilde maken?

MISS ANGEL: Eén jaar geleden. Ik

schreef wel al een tijdje teksten, verses, zonder hook. Af en toe deed ik wat open mics. Ik heb een tijd deel uitgemaakt van Female Takeover, een vrouwelijk collectief van danseressen, muzikanten, slam poets, artiesten enzovoort. Eerst als danseres, maar ik heb er ook mijn eerste stappen gezet als zangeres.

Terwijl het helemaal mijn plan niet was om rapper te worden. (Lacht) Ik was wel allang fan van vrouwelijke mc’s uit de nineties, zoals Lil’ Kim en Missy Elliott, of Queen Latifah en Erykah Badu, en Lauryn Hill natuurlijk, waarmee ik nu de affiche deel op Couleur Café. Zot.

“Every nigga’s a star”, rap je in ‘Squendo’. Is dat een missionstatement?

MISS ANGEL: Eigenlijk verwijs ik naar

dat nummer van Boris Gardiner, dat ook gesampeld is door Kendrick Lamar. De muziekscene is mijn safe space. Daarbuiten word ik vaak raar aangekeken. Elke dag, ja. Ook in de supermarkt, wanneer ik betaal, en zo van die kleine dingen. Ik was niet verrast door de verkiezingen, maar het is wel schokkend. De maskers zijn aan het afvallen en ze gaan ze niet meer opzetten. Maar ik probeer aan racisme weinig aandacht te schenken, dat is te vermoeiend.

Je singles ‘Ghetto supahstar’ en ‘Money making mami’ doen verstaan dat je hebt moeten knokken.

MISS ANGEL: Mijn moeder heeft altijd

MISS ANGEL:

Je bent ook bevriend met Blu Samu.

Waarom ben je al die creatievelingen nog niet naar Brussel gevolgd?

MISS ANGEL: Iederéén vraagt dat.

(Lacht) Ik weet het niet. Het is een grote stap. Mijn moeder, broers en zussen wonen in Antwerpen, mijn manager ook. Maar mijn grootste fans zitten wel in Brussel, weet ik ondertussen. Dat zie ik zelfs aan mijn Spotify-statistieken. Dus vroeg of laat vertrek ik hier...

LUIE LOUIS: Dat idee spookt ook wel door mijn hoofd. Antwerpen is een technokoekenstad, er is geen hol te beleven. Ik vind in Brussel ook meer gelijkgezinde mensen dan hier.

Zoals Zwangere Guy. Ik heb hem op een cypher leren kennen, zo’n event waar rappers om de beurt bars spitten. Het klikte meteen.

Zwangere Guy lijkt de Grote Katalysator van de Belgische rap.

LUIE LOUIS: Die gast is gewoon deuren aan het openstampen.

MISS ANGEL: Zelfs voor mij, terwijl ik

LUIE LOUIS: Zoals het mollenspel: elke keer als je bovenkomt, kloppen ze je weer naar beneden. Bam.

KIEZEN IS ZEGEVIEREN Elke festivalfanaat krijgt het op zijn brood: je wilt je favoriete artiest op ginds podium graag nog een tigste keer aan het werk zien, maar je wilt ook die geheimtip checken die je muziekminnende hartsvriend je had aangeraden. Een kleine roffel door de dilemmatrommel.

Een vos die het moet opnemen tegen een mamba? Dan moet hij al héél sluw zijn. Maar dat is deze viervoeter ook, het alias van Nederlander Robert Vosmeijer, die zijn superstrakke beats al mocht verstrooien over Pukkelpop, Glastonbury en in de Fuse.

StuBru-dj- en -presentator Black Mamba, de alias van de Gentse Noonah Eze, zal meer dan een Bacardi moeten mixen om je te verleiden om naar haar nest af te zakken. Maar dat kan ze uiteraard, met haar hoektandscherpe slices hiphop, zwoele r&b en knetterende beats. Pas op, eenmaal ze je gebeten heeft, laat ze je niet meer los! Maar we geven ons graag over. Sorry, vos.

Luie Louis rapt in het Nederlands, Miss Angel in het Engels. “Thuis sprak ik Engels. Mijn mama is van Kenia, mijn vader van Ghana,” vertelt ze. Ze woonde een tijd in Deurne, maar groeide op op Linkeroever.

Luie Louis komt uit Merksem.

“Nederlands was voor mij de logische keuze, omdat mijn Engels zo hillbilly as fuck is. (Lacht) Ik vind in het Engels schrijven wel dope, het klinkt minder silly dan Nederlands.

‘I’m sad’ voelt heel anders dan ‘Ik ben droevig’, toch? Dat is gewoon fucking whack.” Luie Louis werd als jonge kid getriggerd door Nederlandse rappers als Opgezwolle.

Die verleiding van het Engels wordt wat tastbaarder tijdens de try-out in Leuven, waarin talen door elkaar vloeien als kwakjes waterverf op een schilderspalet. Zo is er ‘Wild horses’, waarmee Luie Louis samen met Brakka Briesje de zaal vlotjes omverblaast. Met Brakka Briesje heeft Luie Louis een ep klaar liggen, net als met Peet van Le 77. “Maar eerst ga ik op kamp in de Ardennen met Roedel. We hebben superveel nieuwe songs geschreven, nu gaan we het album samenstellen. Dit jaar zie ik als mijn opstapjaar.”

Luie Louis heeft deze zomer nog de Lokerse Feesten en Fire Is Gold op zijn programma staan. Ook de zomer van Miss Angel ziet er, voor iemand die nog maar net komt kijken, behoorlijk indrukwekkend uit: buiten de Green Stage op Couleur Café, beklimt ze straks de podia van Rock Werchter, Dour, de Lokerse Feesten, Pukkelpop en Fire Is Gold. “Ik voel wel wat druk,” lacht ze, terwijl ze met haar roze gelakte nagels door haar lange vlechten gaat. “Mensen nemen me nog maar sinds kort serieus, voor hen was ik nog altijd ‘die danseres’. Maar ik ga die shows echt killen.”

Als je djonko’s uit zijn gerold bij Zwangere Guy en zijn broeders van de hiphop, is er nog altijd de bedwelmende ganja van de reggae.

Die van de Britse Hollie Cook bijvoorbeeld – dochter van Sex Pistols-drummer Paul Cook en een paar jaar terug even lid van de legendarische vrouwenpunkband The Slits – die vorig jaar uitblonk met de ode aan donzige seventiesreggae Vessel of love. Nog dikker zullen ze tegelijkertijd de joints rollen in het Dub Forest met Brusselaar Ichman en The Roots Corner Soundsystem. Good vibrations, en vooral vette riddims verzekerd. Maar wij zullen onze smaakpapillen uiteindelijk toch maar toevertrouwen aan de heilige kok.

Niet te verwarren met Kokoroko, de kosmopolitische Londense afrojazzband met Nigeriaanse roots die vrijdag de meest groovy kant van de jazz zal laten horen. Kokoko! ontstond in de straten van Kinshasa waar onstuitbare artiesten met zelfgemaakte instrumenten opzwepende block parties hielden. Dat feest van Afrikaanse ritmes kleuren ze intussen bij met weirde elektronica. Totaal aan de andere kant van het spectrum zit Glauque, een kille, meedogenloze mix van raps en dwarse elektronica uit Namen. Kokoko! betekent ‘tok tok’ in het Lingala, glauque is Frans voor ‘grijsgroen’. Of somber. Het wordt hoe dan ook een donkere nacht, maar met een Afrikaanse tint.

Après une chaude journée d’été, direction les salles fraîches de la Cinematek et son programme rafraîchissant autour de la piscine. Beaucoup de grands réalisateurs ont saisi le potentiel visuel qu’offrent des scènes dans et autour de l’eau. Le brillant Sunset Boulevard (Boulevard du crépuscule) de Billy Wilder s’ouvre sur le cadavre flottant d’une star de cinéma oubliée.

Paolo Sorrentino rend Michael Caine et Harvey Keitel perplexes devant une jeune femme nue qui entre dans leur bain dans Youth. Un Burt Lancaster fort comme un ours plonge, dans l’étrange satire The Swimmer (Le Plongeon), dans des piscines privées.

Le cinéma coréen a cent ans et cela a inspiré le Cinéma Galeries qui a mis Séoul à l’honneur pour son festival annuel L’Heure d’Été. C’est une bonne nouvelle, car le cinéma coréen atteint depuis des années des sommets dans tous les genres: de l’horreur stylisée de Park Chan-wook (Old Boy) aux perles cinéphiles de Lee Chang-dong en passant par les mélanges de genres du génie Bong Joon-ho. Pour les initiés, il n’est pas surprenant que Bong ait remporté la Palme d’or pour Parasite au dernier Festival de Cannes. Pour les projections en plein air, vous devrez vous rendre place Poelaert du jeudi au samedi.

Tous les mercredis de juillet et août, Wolubilis organise une projection en plein air. Ce n’est pas votre situation financière qui vous empêchera de vous rendre au centre culturel de Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.

L’événement est gratuit. Il n’y a pas de films d’art et d’essai pointus au programme, mais le meilleur des films grand public.

Si l’on fait abstraction de la biographie de Queen Bohemian Rhapsody et Johnny English contre-attaque, et que l’on se concentre plutôt sur le film d’amour Call Me By Your Name, The Mule, de et avec Clint Eastwood, ou Welcome to Marwen de Robert ‘Forrest Gump’ Zemeckis.

Mai est un mois frustrant pour les cinéphiles. Les médias parlent avec passion des films qui font le beau temps à Cannes, mais cela peut prendre des mois avant que ces films ne sortent en salles en Belgique. S’ils sortent un jour.

En guise de consolation, Flagey et la Cinematek reprennent chaque année au début des vacances d’été une grande partie du prestigieux festival parallèle qu’est La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. Les cinéphiles ne doivent pas rater l’occasion de voir Ang Hupa sur grand écran. Il s’agit d’un film de SF de Lav Diaz, spécialiste philippin du slow cinéma. Pour les fans de l’horreur corporelle à la David Cronenberg, il y a Wounds de l’irano-britannique Babak Anvari.

ministre de la culture Lee Chang-dong n’est pas un cinéaste très productif, mais quand il prend place derrière la caméra, il fait des merveilles.

Burning fut l’un des films les plus forts de 2018. L’Heure d’Été s’ouvre sur le tout aussi subtil Poésie (2000) et y associe un concert.

C. Reilly et Steve Coogan incarnent les deux clowns légendaires Stan Laurel et Oliver Hardy alias « le Gros et le Petit ». Ne vous attendez pas à une imitation de leurs meilleures bouffonneries, mais à une ode douce et légèrement mélancolique à leur amitié et à leur amour du métier.

malencontreuse avec la vague de films de gangsters britanniques ironiques des années 2000, beaucoup de gens n’ont pas saisi à quel point Sexy Beast était exceptionnel.

« Rien n’est tel que de rechercher la fraîcheur d’un cinéma par une journée ensoleillée. Et il n’y a rien d’aussi bon que le sentiment de retrouver l’air chaud de l’été après un bon film », écrit la réalisatrice Fien Troch dans l’édito de Sun Screens. Sun Screens est le nom que le Cinéma Palace a donné à son programme estival. Soit un mélange de films inédits comme le singulier L’heure de la sortie, des classiques restaurés comme le film culte Easy Rider et une sélection de films d’Agnès Varda. Fin mars, cette grande dame, qui a empêché que la Nouvelle Vague ne soit seulement masculine, est décédée et a été nommée, à l’âge de 89 ans, aux Oscars pour Visages Villages.

Pas de PleinOPENair cette année mais ne vous lamentez pas, le Cinéma Nova vous offre de la nourriture réconfortante. Summer Stoemp est le nom de trois week-ends sur le thème de l’alimentation.

Le menu comprend des concerts, des performances, des ateliers et une exposition.

Bien sûr, il y a aussi une grande portion de films. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (Le Cuisinier, le voleur, sa femme et son amant) de Peter Greenaway est une tragédie de vengeance scabreuse où les obscénités physiques culminent jusqu’au cannibalisme. Si vous préférez associer la nourriture au plaisir, optez pour Tampopo de Jûzô Itami.

La critique française a peut-être inventé le terme « film noir », il s’agit essentiellement d’un genre cinématographique américain. Mais cela ne signifie pas pour autant que la France n’a pas compté de réalisateurs avec un faible pour les films de crime stylisés avec des anti-héros, des femmes dangereuses, des dialogues de durs à cuire et une bonne dose de fatalisme romantique. Au cours de l’été, Flagey projettera six films noirs français. Razzia sur la chnouf explique pourquoi nos grands-parents aimaient tant Jean Gabin et Lino Ventura.

Eaux Profondes est une adaptation d’un classique de Patricia Highsmith avec Isabelle Huppert.

Tour & Taxis souhaite devenir un hotspot et organise donc le festival Summer Edition. Ce point chaud abrite des restaurants pop-up, des soirées afterwork, des ateliers de jardinage écologique, des initiatives sportives et toute une série de concerts et de DJ sets. Tous les vendredi et samedi soir, le site sera transformé en cinéma en plein air. Le programme est joliment éclectique avec des films belges (Paris pieds nus, Parasol) ainsi que des films très anciens (Sunrise ou L’Aurore), anciens (Thelma et Louise, The Shining) et des classiques récents (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

Matti Verbanck admits that two years ago, she was still a shopaholic and that she would go to Zara almost every day. She studied Fashion at school in Aalst and enrolled in Graphic Design partly because she was looking for a broader programme but also because the fashion world seemed too cutthroat. “My first idea for my master’s project was to do something about the polluting meat industry, but one of my teachers, who knew that I was interested in ecology, suggested that I start looking into the sustainability of the fashion industry. That research was a genuine eye-opener. Everyone knows that Primark clothing is made by children, but did you know that the Aral Sea dried up due to cotton production, that thousands of farmers in India committed suicide under the pressure of their killer contracts with Monsanto, and that half of all clothing is thrown away?” Verbanck was shocked and that literally becomes clear in her master’s collection, for which she used recycled clothes to highlight data about the fast fashion industry. About the what? “People often just talk about slow fashion, but that sounds so naïve and well-meaning. I am campaigning for a change. Using the computer programme Photosounder, I transformed the wailing of an angora rabbit into images that I then lasered onto my collection. The skin of angora rabbits is not carefully shaved, it is usually just ripped off their bodies, skin and all.” Verbanck now only buys sustainable clothing and she hasn’t been to Zara for a year and a half. In July, she will release a joint collection with her brother Loan, who runs the activist fashion line Kérosène. While she works on her own new collection, she is also starting an Erasmus internship at a graphic design company in France.

“In the future, I hope to combine a job as a graphic designer with activist fashion collections so that I can keep designing with a message and I don’t have to adapt to the demands of ‘the consumer’.”

“When I arrived in Brussels, I was 23 but still a baby. I have grown so much,” Ugo Woatzi tells us. He grew up as Hugo Fraysse in the countryside in the south of France, where he found the traditional gender roles to be too restrictive. Since he quit his master’s in Political Science and settled here, he has felt liberated. “Perhaps that is because I didn’t know anybody, so I no longer had to hide, but mostly it’s because the local (LGBT) community was so welcoming. After studying photography in Johannesburg, where he has since also exhibited, he decided to continue developing his skills at Sint-Lukas. “My very thematic work around queer identity occasionally clashed with the school’s more conceptual approach, but this place taught me to be open, including to criticism, and to take what I need and leave what I don’t.” His master’s project is about masculinities and how space can affect identity and gender. “It is a mix of text, images, and video. The portraits are of my friends in my communities in Brussels and Johannesburg. The title Chameleon is metaphorical. I used to have to change colour a lot depending on my location. I wanted to reflect that in my work, especially because I am not the only person who wrestles with it.

The personal thus becomes universal. It is really nice when people tell you that they understand what you are doing, and don’t just think it is pretty. We are a transitional generation and we want to change things in a world where everything goes incredibly fast.” His work – he calls it visual activism – has been shown in group exhibitions at Bozar, Recyclart, and DOK. Because he also wants to see the art world from the other side, he will start a six-month job at the Pi Artworks gallery at the Istanbul Biennial in September. “I can’t do the same thing every day, I have to be able to experience new places, but I will certainly return to Brussels, my new home.”

Janne Janssens 21, Zoersel, Audio-visual Arts – Animation

Having completed the general secondary school programme in Latin and Languages, Sint-Lukas was not the obvious choice for Janne Janssens. “I had never been taught fine arts so I had never developed my own style, but I have always been a passionate reader and writer.” She discovered the Animated Film programme at a higher education fair, and she realized that she could also express the stories in her head through imagery. “Despite my initial aversion to it, stop-motion has really become my thing because it allows me to work with my hands. I have loved that since I was a child and my favourite part of the process is still working on my sets and my dolls.” This traditional approach has become her trademark and it is catching on. Her endearing bachelor’s film My Label has been picked up by no fewer than 24 film festivals.

“Due to financing and because stop-motion is very time-consuming, it was impossible for us to go everywhere, but it definitely boosted my confidence.” Expectations for her master’s project are thus very high, even though the script for Ada & Odile was rewritten countless times.

“At first I was somewhat intimidated by the feedback I received. It was only when I started daring to listen to myself that everything fell into place,” she says, describing her learning curve. The theme of her graduation film remained unchanged throughout the process, however, and centres on the communications breakdown between a painter with a creative block and his wife, who gradually becomes literally invisible to him. “This enabled me to take something physically invisible and make it tangible, and to use the stop-motion technique to its full potential.” She is convinced that there will be more job opportunities if she takes a one-year Syntra programme in 3D, so for the time being she is staying a student, but interested animation studios are always welcome to contact her about the job of her dreams. jannejanssens29.wixsite.com/jannejanssens

Sarah Lauwers 22, Brussels, Free Arts

Sarah Lauwers started studying free arts because she needed some free space to think after getting her secondary school diploma in Leuven. “I was also immensely attracted by the buzz of living in Brussels. It is just like being on holiday, which for me is all the more reason to really be myself. During the first year I felt somewhat lost in the wilderness because I had never studied fine arts before. It took time to explore all the different disciplines. Nobody tells you what to do here, so you are forced to wrestle with that freedom until you find your own language.”

Lauwers eventually found hers: video. She was especially intrigued by the possibilities of cutting and pasting footage and of exploring digital space. She is now graduating with two films. “The first is a 17-minute single screen projection for which I made a series of illustrations and collected a lot of footage during a residency with an artist friend of mine in Iceland. The second is an installation with two 12-minute projections.” The link is that they keep one another in balance, and share the same composer. “The first video is about our relationship with outdoor landscapes and how we mark it to make it a controllable place where people can perform. For the second film, which I shot in the studio, I created an interior landscape with characters who each magnified an aspect of our mood. The aesthetic is much more tinkered compared to the raw Icelandic landscapes of the first film. By asking the same composer to work on both films, I realised that I like to exchange ideas with people who are in my vibe. This programme has thus not only made me more independent, but I have also learned to collaborate with people.”

Lauwers intends to enrol in the new education-based master’s programme next year. That will give her enough time to find a studio, and perhaps even to do a residency and to submit her master’s project to some festivals.

Colm Mac Athlaoich 38, Brussels, Free Arts

Because he always wanted to do a master’s but life kept getting in the way, the Irishman Colm Mac Athlaoich only enrolled when he was 35.

“I would recommend it to anyone,” he says on the eve of his defence.

“It’s interesting to live in the real world for a few years before studying something new. I’ve done many things: I ran a gallery and a studio back in Dublin, where I was also a teacher, and I had my own painting studio in Madrid, where I exhibited as well. Being in Brussels enabled me to bring my theoretical game up to scratch and to expand beyond painting.

I was certainly never made to feel old here.” (Smiles) His master’s project is called Index and Origins, and it focuses on systems and methodologies that can regenerate work. It consists of eight works, many paintings, and a small sculpture. Most of them turn audio recordings that describe a work of art into a new piece of art. “The result may or may not look like the original work. It often gets lost in translation. I also collaborated with the archivist of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp and I created a new piece based on a description of looted art from the Nazi era that I found online. I’m interested in the idea that I can tap into resources that will constantly generate new work for me.

It’s the first time that I worked outside of my own comfort zone, involving other people’s participation, but it challenged me in a good way.” As a result, Mac Athlaoich now wants to invite other artists to make works based on descriptions and “maybe see what happens when different people work from the same text.” There will be a show in Dublin in February 2020, and maybe a new collaboration with the Plantin-Moretus Museum, since they will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of Christophe Plantin next year. “One thing is for sure: I will be based in Brussels for a little longer, entering the vivid community of artists. The city is still a hidden gem with a very vibrant scene.” www.macathlaoich.com

Musiq3 abat toutes les frontières

Cette année, le Festival Musiq3 a choisi le thème de la diversité, la mascotte de cette édition est un zèbre affublé de lunettes aux couleurs arc-en-ciel. Ce thème n’est pas uniquement une trouvaille de la direction pour jouer d’une tendance, mais en creusant un peu, on découvre une vraie diversité au sein du programme. De la musique classique en mode rock ’n’ roll.

KATIA GUERREIRO On ne le dirait pas de prime abord, mais la Sud-Africaine Katia Guerreiro est probablement l’artiste qui représente le mieux le thème du festival. Elle est née à Vanderbijlpark, à plus ou moins 70 kilomètres au sud de Johannesburg, mais ses parents portugais ont rapidement quitté l’Afrique du Sud et se sont installés dans les Açores. Voilà qui est déjà plus logique. À l’inverse de la plupart de ses collègues, Guerreiro n’a pas signé de gros contrat avec une maison de disques. La chanteuse travaille même régulièrement à Lisbonne en tant qu’urgentiste, malgré le fait qu’elle soit pourtant considérée comme une des voix les plus importantes de sa génération.

Ses albums sont très appréciés et Guerreiro a même reçu plusieurs décorations honorifiques, tant au Portugal qu’en France.

Cela, elle le doit avant tout à son respect historique du genre. Ses concerts sont épurés, elle est uniquement accompagnée par deux guitares et une basse, et comme les plus grands artistes de fado, Guerreiro est quasiment immobile sur scène, les mains dans le dos, les yeux fermés, prête à « guérir l’âme du public » avec son chant. C’est elle qui le dit, mais nous la croyons sans aucune hésitation.

MARIE-ANGE NGUCI Dans son acception la plus classique, Marie-Ange Nguci correspond parfaitement au thème du festival. Originaire d’Albanie, elle a quitté le pays de l’aigle à deux têtes pour venir étudier au conservatoire de Paris. Âgée d’à peine seize ans, elle y a terminé ses études avec grande distinction. À vingt ans, elle travaille à son doctorat en musicologie. Autre petit détail: elle parle sept langues, et ne joue pas uniquement le piano mais maîtrise également le violoncelle, l’orgue et les ondes Martenot, le prédécesseur du synthétiseur. À Flagey, Nguci se limitera au piano, mais son programme part, littéralement, dans tous les sens. La toute jeune pianiste vous emmène pour un voyage musical à travers le monde. Elle met en musique l’automne inclément de Varsovie dans une étude de György Ligeti, récite le Journal indien de Ferruccio Busoni et vous embarque sur les sinuosités mélodiques de Ravel. Après un bref passage en Russie avec la Cinquième Sonate au piano de Scriabine, elle vous emmènera également par Londres et Paris grâce aux œuvres de Johann Jakob Froberger.

Difficile à croire qu’une telle voyageuse ne soit encore jamais passée par Bruxelles. Il s’agit pourtant du premier concert de festival de Marie-Ange Nguci en Belgique. Après avoir joué au Royal Albert Hall à Londres et au Musikmesse à Francfort, elle est donc enfin de passage à Flagey.

Une fois de plus, lors du dernier concours Reine Elisabeth, force est de constater que les asiatiques dominent les concours de musique classique. Après leur victoire à l’importante compétition Wigmore Hall International String Quarter, les génies coréens d’Esmé Quarter sont donc plutôt la règle qu’une exception.

Peut-on dans ce cas véritablement les définir comme étant divers ? Certainement, car la diversité au sein de leurs concerts provient avant tout du clash entre leur origine d’Asie de l’Est et leur répertoire allemand hyperromantique. Un travail instrumental parfait dans un programme musical ancré dans le pathos. Le nom de leur quartet a beau venir de l’ancien français esmer – devenu par la suite « aimer » – leur prédilection pour l’œuvre prussienne n’est pas tout à fait inattendue : le quartet coréen a été formé à la maîtrise des cordes à la Hochschule für Musik à Cologne et ils sont depuis restés chez nos voisins teutons.

Depuis l’Allemagne, un voyage vers la capitale belge est certes moins une expédition que vers la lointaine ville de Séoul. L’Esmé Quarter était déjà de passage l’année passée, lorsqu’ils ont joué au Studio 1 pour un programme axé autour de Debussy. Cette fois-ci, ils s’osent, avec une reprise de La Jeune Fille et la Mort, le 14e Quatuor à Cordes de Franz Schubert, à une des grandes œuvres de la musique de chambre.

Difficile de ne pas les esmer donc.

L’intention de Vassiléna Serafimova et de Chloé Thévenin est sans aucun doute diverse. Il est plutôt rare de voir collaborer une percussionniste bulgare avec une DJ électro française lors d’un festival de musique classique. Et il est peut-être encore plus surprenant d’apprendre que le duo a joué le même concert au festival populaire néerlandais Eurosonic. Un genre difficile à classer donc.

Le duo n’en est pas à son coup d’essai. En 2018, la joueuse de marimba et la tourneuse de platines avaient déjà collaboré. Résultat : un mélange unique de percussion et de synthétiseur. Lors d’une session live, elles avaient essayé de trouver un point commun entre le minimalisme de la moitié du siècle précédent et celui de la musique électro. Cette session live unique avait d’ailleurs été gravée sur vinyle dix pouces pour les collectionneurs.

Malgré l’excellente réputation des enregistrements à Flagey, il n’y aura toutefois pas de nouveau vinyle pendant cette édition du Festival Musiq3. Mais cela n’empêche pas Serafimova et Thévenin de continuer à explorer le répertoire classique moderne. Leur concert, Sequenza Live, a beau avoir reçu le nom du magnum opus de Luciano Berio, le père fondateur de la musique électronique expérimentale, ce sont avant tout les œuvres de l’Américain Steve Reich qui sont à la base de leur exploration de la minimal music.

COLLAPSED LUNGS Vandenberghe started looking for specialists. “A stuntwoman told me that nobody in stunts ever falls on concrete and that rather than wearing protection, they would just fall on a mattress,” he says. “Nonetheless, I found a project developer and started researching the right materials for the suit.

The company that collaborated on making the suit made me sign a contract that they are not responsible for any accidents that may occur. It was also very difficult to find somebody to insure this project. A traumatologist told me that the chances of having a collapsed lung would be much too high if I fell forwards, so I had to turn the

whole thing around to fall backwards. I am afraid of heights, so I also had to consult a hypnotherapist. A circus artist taught me how to fall from five metres high, but ultimately we decided that I would fall from precisely 4.22 metres. As you can tell, it was a challenging project in various ways.

In the whole detailed search, it immediately became apparent that the dreams you have as an artist are either literally smashed to pieces or objectified by specialists that you never would have expected to be involved in a project like this.”

In the end, all that research resulted in a three-part project. “The Story is an important part, in which I tell the story of the project in a 45-minute lecture with papers in my hands,” Vandenberghe says.

“I not only discuss the technical but also the metaphorical and personal aspects. I also talk about something that happened in my life that caused a terrible crisis. My intention is to say something beautiful about the power of vulnerability. We often fool ourselves into thinking that we are very courageous when actually that might not really be the case.”

It is also important to remember that a calculated risk is still a risk, Vandenberghe tells us. “The modern man who conquered his freedom wants to jump, but without God it is very difficult to determine your own coordinates.”

“In addition to The Story there is also The Installation, a kind of workshop that presents all the material from the research process, as well as an eight-minute short film,” Vandenberghe continues. “The third part is called The Ritual. The Belgian author and poet Peter Verhelst wrote a text especially and it consists of fourteen stations. It is a kind of mantra with a lot of repetition that I need to accompany me while I climb the stairs and then, around midnight, to fall into the night.”

asper Vandenberghe has a background with the theatre companies Het Zuidelijk Toneel and Ontroerend Goed, and Troubleyn, Jan Fabre’s performing arts company where he still teaches. Two years ago, he collaborated with business manager Wouter Vermeylen and dramatist Matthias Velle to establish MOVEDBYMATTER. Last year, they presented Panic Fear of Standing Still at the Theater Aan Zee theatre festival and will stage it again during the Gentse Feesten this year. Calculated Risk, which was initially supposed to be a simple solo, became a complex triptych: The Ritual, The Installation, and The Story.

“I wanted to jump off buildings,” explains Kasper Vandenberghe. “I wanted to take risks, but without having to be in pain. For the performance artists of the 1970s and ’80s – Marina Abramovic, Chris Burden, Jan Fabre – it was real action, but also real pain. So I started thinking about how I could fall but without actually hurting myself. In the beginning, in my naïve phase, I made a suit of bubble wrap with a costumier, but I discovered that one metre was already too far to fall because my lungs would start hurting.”

The Horror Garden is an “investigative workshop” about the relationship between people and plants, based on a number of horror films in which plants terrify people instead of the other way around. In passing, Gosie Vervloessem also teaches us some lessons about colonization.

In 2018, the Belgian transdisciplinary artist and actress Kim Snauwaert and the young Russian-Belgian artist Anyuta Wiazemsky got married. It was not a marriage for love but a sham wedding that became an artwork to debate the ins and outs and sense and nonsense of marriage migration policies. An exhibition and a conversation reveal the interaction between bureaucratic norms and artistic freedom.

Het klinkt als een doffe dienstmededeling maar het is – dat weet u ook – goed nieuws en een groot compliment: Toy Story 4 volgt Toy Story, Toy Story 2 en Toy Story 3 waardig op. — NIELS RUËLL

Toy Story 2 is een van de mooiste bewijzen dat sequels fantastisch kunnen zijn. Omdat Toy Story 3 zo mooi en emotioneel een trilogie leek af te ronden, was het een roekeloze zet om sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear en de rest van het pratende speelgoed een vierde keer te filmen terwijl ze achter de rug van de mensen wilde avonturen beleven. Waarom het nalatenschap in gevaar brengen? Die achterdocht verdient achterdocht. Ook Toy Story 4 wervelt, ontroert, betovert en verwarmt. Sheriff Woody is zijn status als favoriete stuk speelgoed kwijt nu de bende is overgedragen van de groot geworden Andy naar kersverse kleuter Bonnie. De ontroerend loyale, nobele held (een rariteit) werpt zich dan maar op als de beschermer van de onwaarschijnlijke Forky. Forky is het mannetje dat Bonnie op de eerste dag van de kleuterklas in elkaar flanste met een plastic lepelvork en wat weggesmeten knutselgerief. Hij waant zich afval en snapt niets van zijn bestaan. Tijdens een knotsgekke kampeertrip botst Woody dan weer op een oude vlam – de triomfantelijke terugkeer van de porseleinen herderin Bo Peep – en zij confronteert hem met een ruwer, maar aantrekkelijk en zinvol bestaan waar hij niet mee vertrouwd is. Het kan hem helpen om zichzelf opnieuw uit te vinden.

Ook het vierde avontuur is er één met alles erop en eraan: spectaculaire actiescènes, enge passages in de antiekwinkel, ontmoetingen met rare snuiters (kermispluche), dappere beslissingen, edelmoedigheid en hartverwarmende solidariteit. Die existenti-

ële zoektocht is slechts een van de vele, maar hij getuigt van Pixars ambitie om een verhaal te vertellen dat jaren meegaat. De computeranimatie is zo gedetailleerd, gestileerd, kleurrijk, dynamisch, geloofwaardig, mooi en expressief dat een diepe buiging op zijn plaats is. Maar ze staat ten dienste van dat nog steeds aangrijpende verhaal van het speelgoed dat ons begeleidt in het trotseren van de wereld. Of we nu 7, 37, 67 of 97 jaar oud zijn.

Toy Story 3 semblait compléter parfaitement la trilogie, mais cette quatrième aventure des jouets parlants tourbillonne, émeut, enchante et réchauffe le cœur. L’animation digitale est si détaillée, stylisée, colorée, dynamique, crédible, belle et expressive qu’elle mérite qu’on s’incline. Pixar fait, une fois de plus, preuve d’ambition en racontant une histoire intemporelle de jouets qui nous guident pour affronter le monde. Que nous ayons 7, 37, 67 ou 97 ans.

Toy Story 3 seemed to be the perfect conclusion to a trilogy, but the fourth instalment of the series about talking toys is likewise exhilarating, moving, enchanting, and warm. Sheriff Woody rushes to the defence of Forky, a little guy made out of a plastic spork and some leftover bits and pieces. He thinks he is trash and does not understand anything about his existence. The computer animation is so detailed, stylized, colourful, dynamic, credible, beautiful, and expressive that this film deserves great respect. Pixar again demonstrates its ambition to tell a timeless story about toys that stick right by us as we take on the world, whether we’re 7, 37, 67, or 97.

Suite à un accident de la route, un piètre auteur-compositeur-interprète de Suffolk se retrouve soudainement le seul au monde à se souvenir des chansons des Beatles. Ainsi, il peut jouer Yesterday, Penny Lane et Here Comes The Sun et faire croire que ce sont ses chansons. Avec l’aide d’un Ed Sheeran jaloux (Ed Sheeran), Jack (Himesh Patel) fait sensation dans l’industrie de la musique, mais la renommée et le succès l’éloignent de son ancienne prof-roadie-manager (Lily James). On ne vous en voudra pas de critiquer ce film du réalisateur Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) et du scénariste Richard Curtis (Notting Hill, Love Actually). Le pitch farfelu n’est pas assez exploité et on finit par retomber dans une de ces histoires d’amour à l’eau de rose de Curtis sur de jeunes hommes tremblants, aveugles au bonheur qui se trouve juste devant leurs yeux. Mais ne râlons pas trop tout de même car c’est l’été et les films réconfortants sont trop souvent critiqués. C’est l’occasion d’écouter avec une attention renouvelée les perles des Beatles et c’est assez comique qu’Ed Sheeran conseille à Jack de changer Hey Jude en Hey Dude. (NR)

They just have to pick up their diploma and Molly and Amy will finish high school. They were model students but hardly went to any parties, so they hatch the wild plan to redress the imbalance in the last 24 hours they have left. Or at least to create the impression that they work hard but also party hard. With the enthusiasm, self-deprecation, and militancy of contemporary teenagers, they go completely nuts. The thin plot does not lead to false-sounding life lessons that are not learned anyway. There is no moralizing to spoil the fun. The secondary characters are the stereotypes that populate every American teen film, but Amy and Molly themselves have great personalities. That’s why it’s a pleasure to watch them as they go from one attempt at excess to the next. This film would have fallen completely flat if it were not for the excellent performances by Kaitlyn Dever (Amy) and Beanie Feldstein (Molly) from Lady Bird. In her directorial debut, Olivia Wilde (House M.D., Tron) finds a balance between tempo, humour, exaggeration, fantasy, and genuine feelings and unconditional friendship. Booksmart is being called Superbad with girls, but that doesn’t do it justice. From now on, Superbad is Booksmart with boys. (NR)

Na een verkeersongeluk is een sjofele singer-songwriter uit Suffolk de enige ter wereld die zich de liedjes van The Beatles herinnert. Met de hulp van een stikjaloerse Ed Sheeran wordt Jack een muzieksensatie, maar het succes verwijdert hem van zijn ex-manager/roadie/lerares. Danny Boyle en Richard Curtis vangen niet veel aan met de van de pot gerukte premisse en ja, Yesterday is het zoveelste voorspelbare, zoete liefdesverhaal, maar The Beatles blijven zalig en Ed Sheeran (‘Hey dude’) is best grappig.

Dever en Feldstein zetten uitstekende vertolkingen neer, en Olivia Wilde vindt in haar regiedebuut een evenwicht tussen tempo, humor, overdrijving en oprechte gevoelens. Booksmart wordt Superbad met meisjes genoemd. Zeg gerust: Superbad is Booksmart met jongens.

With the help of a desperately jealous Ed Sheeran, Jack becomes a music sensation, but all his success estranges him from his ex-manager/roadie/teacher. Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis don’t do very much with the insane premise of this film and yes, Yesterday is yet another saccharine love story, but The Beatles are still brilliant and Ed Sheeran (“Hey Dude”) is really quite funny.

L’école secondaire est presque terminée pour Molly et Amy. Elles ont étudié de façon exemplaire, mais n’ont guère fait la fête et veulent remédier à cette situation au cours des prochaines 24 heures. Avec l’enthousiasme et l’autodérision des ados d’aujourd’hui, elles se lâchent. Dever et Feldstein fournissent d’excellentes interprétations et Olivia Wilde trouve dans son premier film un équilibre entre tempo, humour, exagération et sentiments sincères. Booksmart est la version de Superbad avec des filles. Et vice versa.

The Brussels-based sculptor and illustrator Thomas Lerooy found that he was increasingly painting over his work, so he decided to meddle with the codes of that divine discipline. Charming naughtiness. — KURT SNOEKX Thomas Lerooy has never really been one to obey the rules. Even while at school in Roeselare, he would doodle all over his atlas, and when he grew older and made his breakthrough in the arts world, he did so with alienating and deeply fascinating sculptures and drawings that presented a sensual fusion of life and death, birth and transience, multiplicity and unity, the iconic and the fragmentary. A playful universe in which ideas could collide and lovingly but also slightly disrespectfully tamper

with the historical codes of the fine arts.

It is this same charming naughtiness that comes to the fore in “Behind the Curtain”, his solo exhibition at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. Not only in his bronze sculptures enveloped in a silver patina, of birds that never fly but stand, lie, and break open into absurd constellations, but also in his oil paintings – a new direction in his ungraspable artistic practice.

“I have always had a soft spot for

the old masters. I still consider painting the most divine discipline,” Thomas Lerooy told BRUZZ a few weeks ago. Reason enough to make it just a little bit more human. Sometimes he does this through comedy: Two Is a Pair is a composition with two pears, while in Moonlight a candle has just been blown out – perhaps by the mooning bottom that we see above it? Sometimes he does so through a jet-black exploration of the macabre: all medical attention will come too late for the unfortunate assistant of a William Tell wannabe in An Apple a Day. Or by highlighting the material boundaries of this newly discovered discipline: in addition to a surrealist scene, both Broken and Viewpoint feature a (painted) curling corner, as though the paintings emphasize their own transience.

The art of Thomas Lerooy thus lustily gropes at life. Ambitious and yet doomed to fail. Deadly serious (in its formal appropriation) while also relativistic in what the form depicts. It is on this fence that Thomas Lerooy likes to sit: between pure idea and flawed attempt, between the iconic and the fragmentary, between the outside world and what goes on behind the curtain. All is in vain, let’s try again!

A

lors que l’électroencéphalogramme d’Edith Cavell est officiellement plat, la vie reprend de ce côté d’Uccle.

L’étincelle en question s’est produite sur le coin juste en face de l’ancien hôpital. Et c’est une petite bande déjà identifiée, notamment pour ses établissements Chez Franz et Chez Richard, qui s’est emparée du défibrillateur. Ces petits futés ont posé les électrodes avec beaucoup de justesse à la faveur d’un petit espace drapé de bois. On aime les grandes étagères qui alignent les bouteilles de vin jusqu’au vertige, le carrelage quatre couleurs (noir, jaune, blanc et rouge), les baies vitrées devant lesquelles on peut poser le coude, ainsi que le magnifique comptoir ouvragé.

Des petits détails poétisent l’ensemble, entre de jolies boîtes de sardines portugaises, des flocons de sel Maldon et un exemplaire rimbaldien de la mythique Saison en Enfer.

Enfer ? C’est plutôt de paradis dont il est question ici tant la séduction opère.

C’est d’abord l’impeccable assortiment de vins nature qui retient l’œil. Il y a là toutes les références prisées par les amateurs : le domaine espagnol Partida Creus (avec en plus quelques raretés), les chablis de Thomas Pico, les tueries jurassiennes d’Etienne Thiebaud (Domaine des Cavarodes) et bien d’autres encore. Les prix ? Ils débutent aux alentours de 20€ pour une bouteille à déguster sur place. Pour accompagner ces merveilles, le lieu sert une petite restauration sur le pouce aussi à l’aise le midi – ciabatta aux anchois et poivrons (6€), filets de sardine d’Andalousie (7€), ricotta de bufflonne au four avec des courgettes basilic citron (8€) – qu’au moment de l’apéritif – magret de canard ; mousserons et confiture d’orange (8€) ; planches de charcuteries artisanales, notamment celles de

Stefano Bettella (Crémone), ou de fromages (9€). À cela, il faut ajouter une réduite mais agréable terrasse urbaine, des spritz maison à base de vermouth Berto (7€), de l’excellent pain de chez Matinal ou une aussi énorme qu’appétissante motte de beurre coopératif Verneuil qui décore le comptoir.

Comble du bonheur, l’équipe en place est drôle, cool et détendue.

Forcément, il fallait un revers. On n’en a vu qu’un seul : les volumes réduits de Tortue n’accueillent qu’un petit cénacle de privilégiés. Mieux vaut donc arriver tôt pour en faire partie (sachant qu’une fois installé, personne n’a envie de s’en aller).

Tortue heeft een vlekkeloze selectie natuurlijke wijnen in huis en serveert kleine snacks tijdens de lunch: ciabatta met ansjovis en pepers (€6), Andalusische sardinefilets (€7), gebakken ricotta van buffel met basilicum, limoen en courgettes (€8). ‘s Avonds kan je er dan weer terecht voor eendenborstfilet, mousserons met gekonfijte sinaasappel (€8) en borden met artisanaal vlees of kaas (€9). Het personeel is tof, cool en ontspannen. Eén bemerking: de voorraad is beperkt, de kans is reëel dat je niet kan bestellen wat je maag verlangt.

Tijdig arriveren is dus de boodschap, want wie er zich neervlijt, wil er niet meer weg.

Passioneel met patisserie Een piepklein uithangbord, een onopvallende gevel bedekt met klimop, een sober interieur en een open atelier: veel heeft patisserie Maison Zack in de Hoogstraat niet om het lijf. Maar de creaties van meesterpatissier Jean-Charles Zaquine maken veel goed. Het is alsof je in een koelkast binnen wandelt. Met een beetje geluk staat Zaquine aan zijn bakkerstafel taartvormen te maken of gebakjes te versieren. Hij bakt met de glimlach, maar vergis je niet, hij werkt met uiterste precisie. “Middelmatigheid wordt niet getolereerd,” zegt hij. Dat leerde hij van zijn Japanse en Franse leermeesters, toen hij na een bankiersbestaan een patissieropleiding volgde. Hij werkte in sterrenrestaurants en voor een cateraar die de toetjes voor de Madonna’s en Justin Biebers van de wereld bakte.

Een heerlijk kleinood (€6,10) dat smaakt naar meer. “Een goed dessert moet evenwichtig zijn, en sprankelen als muziek,” zegt Zaquine lyrisch, zoals enkel Fransen kunnen spreken over patisserie. Zijn moeder, die af en toe een handje toesteekt, treedt hem bij. “Hier vind je geen dissonanten, enkel harmonie.” En dat smaakt.

De Britse drummer Charles Hayward zat samen met Bill Laswell en Fred Frith in de experimentele rockgroep Massacre en bracht net nog een liveplaat uit van een improset met het Japanse noisegenie Keiji Haino. Maar op zijn soloplaat die eerder dit jaar verscheen, liet hij zich van zijn zachtste kant zien – percussieve escapades waren plots vervangen door breekbaar ingezongen pianoliedjes. In Magasin 4 zal Hayward plukken uit zijn rijkgevulde solocarrière, die hij na passages bij de experimentele rockgroepen This Heat en Camberwell Now eind jaren 1980 al van start liet gaan met de hulp van het Brusselse platenlabel Sub Rosa. Après un premier album bien offensif produit par l’insatiable Ty Segall, Feels revient dans l’actualité avec un disque un brin désabusé et méchamment remonté. Sur l’excellent Post Earth, le quatuor californien prend le pouls de la planète. Le diagnostic est vite fait : pollution et réchauffement climatique palpitent dans les veines d’un monde usé. Feels part donc du principe que la fin est proche... Épaulées par leur batteur, les trois filles du groupe chantent à l’unisson, ranimant au passage le cynisme de la génération X et l’esprit du mouvement Riot grrrl. Dans la lignée de Sleater-Kinney, Hole ou Bikini Kill, la musique de Feels secoue les consciences sans ménagement.

Eind 1959 verscheen in Robbedoes de eerste Bollie en Billie, een gagstrip waarin een guitig jongetje (Bollie) en zijn al even deugnietende cockerspaniël (Billie) avonturen beleefden die uit het leven gegrepen waren. De zoete, kinderlijke kijk van Brusselaar Jean Roba maakte van de huis-tuin-en-keukenstrip een hartverwarmend succes, dat uitvloeide in een resem albums (vanaf 2003 voortgezet door Roba’s assistent Laurent Verron en sinds 2017 door Bastide en Cazenove), een tekenfilmreeks en twee bioscoopfilms. Zestig jaar na die eerste strip wijdt het Stripmuseum een zomers mijmerende expo aan het duo. (KS)

« Pour moi, c’est ce qu’il y a de plus fascinant dans le collage: pouvoir créer une nouvelle dimension en mélangeant images, influences artistiques et époques.

Dès qu’on sort une image de son contexte, tout est possible. » Ainsi s’exprime David Delruelle, brillant artiste bruxellois du collage, qui déploie sa propre galerie dans le paysage culturel cet été, mais qui participe cette fois à l’exposition avec laquelle Sterput tente de mettre au diapason les dieux du soleil de l’été et du feu de l’enfer.

One of the warmest and most colourful projects that we’ve seen so far this year was “Tell Me More about You”: an exquisite artistic total experience at Les Ateliers Mommen, basking in generosity, hospitality, and solidarity. The Polish-born, Brussels-based Tatiana Wolska, who along with Maëlle Delaplanche was the driving force behind the project, is now eschewing all colour at Irene Laub. In the exhibition “Achrome”, fourteen artists – including Roeland Tweelinckx, Athina Ioannou, Eirene Efstathiou, Lucile Bertrand, and Gudny Rosa Ingimarsdottir – present work that deals with the effects that the absence of colour might have on our perception and experience.
