Vivre sans script Le 23 janvier dernier, un géant s’est éteint à New York. Il avait 96 ans, sa carrière artistique et son parcours personnel étaient exemplaires. Né en Lituanie en 1922, Jonas Mekas a connu les camps de travail en Allemagne, le communisme brutal et l’exil avant d’être installé aux États-Unis sans vraiment en avoir eu le choix.

D’une modestie totale, cet homme, véritable figure de proue de la scène underground, a révolutionné les codes du cinéma. Tout au long de sa vie, il n’a eu de cesse de minimiser son rôle, affirmant qu’il était davantage un « filmeur » qu’un véritable « cinéaste », dans la mesure où il ne décidait de rien.

Michel Verlinden est à la fois critique d’art et critique culinaire.

« Je me promène avec ma caméra dans ma poche et je la sors quand je sens que c’est le moment », expliquait-il avec une humilité jamais feinte.

Andy Warhol, la bande du Velvet Underground, Salvador Dalí, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg, Merce Cunningham, Jean Genet… son itinéraire a croisé plusieurs grands noms du 20e siècle. Le cinéma a été salutaire pour Mekas. À lui tout seul, il a inventé un genre : le journal filmé, créneau qui l’a tenu à l’écart de l’industrie et de l’académisme. Le tout pour une pratique artistique alternative refusant la narration et les compromissions pour raisons économiques. Sa caméra

Bolex, dont il ne se séparait jamais, lui a permis de s’opposer à la violence de l’oubli, se forgeant ainsi un ailleurs capable de transcender la douleur de l’exil. Nous devons retenir l’exemple de Jonas Mekas comme celui d’un éternel déplacé, quelqu’un n’ayant pas tout à fait oublié d’où il vient mais ne se considérant pas pour autant chez lui. Cette manière d’être au monde très personnelle, sans script, et cette façon de ne pas se sentir plus légitime que qui que ce soit, où que ce soit, devrait être une référence absolue.

Mettons sans plus attendre nos pas dans ceux de Jonas Mekas.

Maja Westerveld VERS BLOED IN HET ABATTOIR

Drek van schrijfster, regisseur en actrice Maja Westerveld was vorig jaar een hit op Theater aan Zee. Het debuut dat de Nederlandse ex-studente van de regie-opleiding aan het RITCS zelf schreef en regisseerde, kwam tot stand onder het dak van het Mechelse theatergezelschap Abattoir Fermé.

“Tijdens de schrijfopleiding heb ik hun Chaostrilogie gezien.

Daardoor realiseerde ik me dat er ook een heel ander soort theater bestond, met veel energie die niet alleen uit het hoofd maar ook uit de buik komt. Pas aan het RITCS kwam ik erachter dat Stef (Lernous, het Abattoir-opperhoofd dat ook lesgeeft aan het RITCS, mb) de Chaostrilogie heeft geregisseerd. Toen er in de masteropleiding ruimte kwam voor stages, mocht ik meewerken aan het stuk Colossus. Zo ben ik uiteindelijk bij Abattoir en in België gebleven.”

Bij Abattoir Fermé is Westerveld in opleiding tot regisseur. In een traject van vijf jaar maakt ze haar eigen stukken. Ze neemt de projecten aan die niet in de agenda van het gezelschap passen. Onlangs maakte ze een massavoorstelling met 400 inwoners van een dorp, en ze is klankbord van Stef Lernous.

“Abattoir is zo’n dynamisch gezelschap dat ik er techniek kan leren, soms onverwacht moet invallen in een stuk, en natuurlijk ook gewoon heel onromantisch de rommel mee opruim na een repetitie. Momenteel ben ik samen met Stef Salome aan het maken in Duitsland. Straks gaan we figuranten zoeken en timmeren aan de set voor de film die we ter gelegenheid van 20 jaar Abattoir gaan draaien.”

Het belangrijkste doel van dit traject is op zoek gaan naar een eigen signatuur “IK BEN GEFASCINEERD als theatermaker. “NatuurDOOR SUKKELS IN DE lijk zijn er inhoudelijk MAATSCHAPPIJ” raakvlakken met wat de mensen kennen van Abattoir. Het doel van Drek was niet zozeer om op te vallen, of mij in de markt te zetten als nieuwe jonge maker van Abattoir, wel om te zoeken welk theater ik wil maken. Ik heb een jaar aan de voorstelling geschreven, ze getoond aan een publiek, verder geschreven en gerepeteerd, met als focus die zoektocht. Tot twee weken voor de voorstelling was het niet duidelijk of ze op tijd af zou raken, maar uiteindelijk bleek er een publiek voor te zijn.”

Om niet te zeggen dat het stuk veel bijval kreeg – in ieder geval meer dan het hoofdpersonage. Westerveld: “Ik heb nu een fascinatie en een liefde voor sukkels in de maatschappij. Drek gaat over een dame die op een ochtend door de wekker slaapt en zo haar grip op de werkelijkheid en de maatschappij verliest. Alles vliegt aan haar voorbij, maar toch wil ze halsstarrig aanklampen. Al doende schrijft ze een document om weer grip te krijgen op het bestaan.” — MICHAËL BELLON

‘Dit is allemáál Martha’

De muzikale ontgroening van Martha Da’ro Op het festival voor muzikale spruiten Propulse steekt Martha Da’ro haar neus aan het venster. Een gesprek met de hoofdrolspeelster van Black over Monopoly, tatoeages en goedkope wijn. — TOM ZONDERMAN • FOTO’S: SASKIA VANDERSTICHELE

n Black leerden we haar kennen als Martha Canga Antonio (23), maar voluit heet ze Martha da Rosa Canga Antonio, een Portugees klinkende naam die haar Angolese roots verraden en die ze nu inkortte om er muziek mee te maken.

“Thuis zeggen ze Rosi tegen mij,” lacht ze in Chicago – het café, niet de stad. Thuis, dat was eerst even Bergen, dan Luik en vervolgens Mechelen, waar ze met haar ouders rond haar zevende terechtkwam.

“Nederlands leren vond ik als kind afschuwelijk. Nu spreek ik het beter dan Frans en Portugees.”

Na Mechelen trok Martha Da’ro voor twee jaar naar Gent. En nu, sinds november, heeft ze een stek in de rustige wijk achter BarBeton. “Iedereen denkt dat ik hier al mijn hele leven woon,” grijnst ze. Ze behoort tot een opvallende nieuwe lichting jonge artiesten die van Brussel hun uitvalsbasis maken, zoals Salomé “Blu Samu” Dos Santos, Brihang en Dvtch Norris. “Met Salomé speel ik op zondag Monopoly,” grinnikt Da’ro. “Ik ben héél saai, ik kom niet veel buiten. Maar ik hou van de energie van Brussel.”

In Mechelen zat ze in een creatieve scene.

“Op school deed niemand wat hij of zij echt wilde. Daarbuiten moedigden we elkaar aan om creatief te zijn.” Het jeugdhuis ROJM fungeerde als katalysator.

“Ze hadden een studio. Daar begonnen we te experimenteren.” En zo belandde Martha Da’ro ook bij Soul’Art, een collectief van hiphoppers uit Mechelen en Vilvoorde dat vorig jaar nog deel uitmaakte van Niveau 4 op Couleur Café.

DE WERELD GERED De filmwereld betrad Martha Da’ro vanuit het niets, nadat ze samen met haar tegenspeler Aboubakr Bensaihi zonder filmervaring gecast werd voor de hoofdrol in Black. Dat was de next-level move van de regisserende spitsbroeders Adil El Arbi en Bilall Fallah, die met hun castingbureau Hakuna meer mensen met een allochtone achtergrond op het scherm willen krijgen.

“Ik besef nu dat ik superjong was in mijn hoofd. De opnames waren in 2014. Ik was

19, bij de audities 18. De aandacht die ik nadien kreeg, de interviews, de festivals, de prijzen, dat was overwhelmend. Ik probeerde vooral heel hard met mijn voeten op de grond te blijven, waardoor ik wat te serieus was en niet altijd kon genieten.”

Martha Da’ro noemt zichzelf ook “een newbie” als het over muziek gaat, maar uit het niets komt ze dus niet helemaal.

Soul’Art bracht haar al naar het podium, al was de aandacht daarbij bescheiden. Maar nu ze het solo probeert, mogen de spots wel vol op haar, zoals bij haar eerste

“Er is niemand die je zegt: ‘Zo zit onze cultuur in elkaar’” soloshow in het voorprogramma van Mahalia in de Botanique vorig najaar. Haar eerste single, ‘Summer blues’, verscheen in november, in april volgt haar debuut-ep, Cheap wine & Paris. “Na een casting in Parijs zat ik op een bankje in de zon te filosoferen, met wat madeleintjes en goedkope wijn. (Lacht) Ik zat zo diep in mijn gedachten dat ik mezelf bijna van op een afstand zat te observeren, alsof ik een foto van mezelf nam. Ik vond het sterk van mezelf dat ik had doorgezet om daar te staan. Zonder arrogant te willen zijn: ik weet dat ik goed ben in wat ik doe, en ga daar helemaal voor.”

De artistieke drive van Martha Da’ro is groot. Ze acteert in film en theater (samen met Johannes en Pieter Genard ging ze vorig jaar De wereld redden voor Arsenaal/ Lazarus), ze schrijft en maakt clips. Die drive heeft ze niet van thuis meegekregen.

“In het middelbaar wilde ik drama doen, maar mijn ouders zagen daar geen toekomst in. Ik ben de tweede oudste van

zes. Voor mijn broers en zussen wil ik gerust het zwarte schaap zijn, als ik maar deuren kan openen.” (Lacht) Martha Da’ro’s ouders ontvluchtten in de jaren 1990 Angola, dat als voormalige kolonie van Portugal door een aanhoudende burgeroorlog werd verscheurd. “Voor hen was naar hier komen een kwestie van overleven. Ik begrijp hun bezorgdheid over mijn toekomst, ze vinden het belangrijk om een goed en zeker leven op te bouwen.

En daar past een kunstenaarsbestaan niet in. Nu, mijn moeder is mijn grootste fan hoor. Tegelijk zegt ze: ga je nu morgen weer beginnen te studeren? (Lacht) Mijn vader is wel blij met wat ik doe, maar de muziek is zijn stijl niet. Hij luistert naar semba en Cesária Évora.”

In ‘Summer blues’ is die muziek slechts een verre echo. Rond Martha Da’ro’s wat kinderlijke, maar unieke stem horen we experimentele soul en r&b met een jazzy, dromerige sfeer. Geprikt op een verwrongen sambabeat die ze in elkaar knutselde met de Brusselse producers Sabali en Jay Psar. “Ik heb zitten graven in de geschiedenis en de muziekcultuur van Angola.

Heel veel slaven zijn destijds van Angola naar Brazilië gebracht. Hun muziek, de semba, heeft daar de basis gelegd voor de samba. Dat heeft me dan weer bij bossanova gebracht, en bij João Gilberto.

Zijn teksten en zijn stem hebben mij betoverd. Van hem heb ik ‘Chega de saudade’ al eens gecoverd.”

BELGISCH ÉN ANGOLEES “Ik ben nog nooit in Angola geweest,” vertelt Martha Da’ro. “Maar ik heb er nog veel familie. Ik communiceer vaak met hen per telefoon of via sociale media. Ik denk dat het belangrijk is om te begrijpen vanwaar je komt. Dat maakt alles wat je doet, en waar je naartoe gaat, logischer.

Authentieker ook dan dat je probeert ergens bij te horen.” Evident is dat niet.

“Nee. Je ouders komen uit een totaal andere wereld, en jij komt buiten en dan moet je het zelf uitzoeken. Er is niemand die je zegt, zo zit deze cultuur in elkaar. Je krijgt als kind in plaats daarvan de

boodschap: dit is niet jouw cultuur.” Op de vraag of ze zich Belg voelt, reageert ze fel. “Daar denk je toch pas over na als die vraag je gesteld wordt? Dat is hetzelfde als vragen of ik me vrouw voel. Euh, ja? Ik moet niet Angolees óf Belgisch zijn, ik ben de twee. Dat maakt me ook sterker, want mijn perspectief is breder.”

“I didn’t want to be the victim of the story,” klinkt het dus strijdvaardig in ‘Summer blues’. Toch? “Oei, moet ik dat verhaal vertellen? Dat liedje gaat over een ex-vriendje, een schilder. In een vlaag van woede had ik een paar schilderijen stukgemaakt en in een vuilniszak aan de deur gezet. Keidramatisch! (Lacht) Het is oké hoor, het is ondertussen bijgelegd. Hij heeft van de verscheurde canvassen nu een kleedje gemaakt aan de modeschool. ‘Summer blues’ klonk eerst veel venijniger, maar ik heb dat met Jay Psar afgezwakt. Ik hou van liedjes die niet sad klinken, maar wanneer je naar de tekst luistert, ontwaar je toch een donkere kant.”

Op haar Facebook-pagina is Martha Da’ro te zien met een tattoo op haar zij. Lauryn Hill, gok ik. “Nee, mijn moeder,” giechelt ze. “Toen ik haar dat vertelde, was ze minder kwaad. (Lacht) Oké, zei ze, maar laat er geen tweede zetten. En dat heb ik wel gedaan. Hier (wijst naar haar nek). Fatima en Amiga, de namen van mijn moeder en mijn oma, de twee belangrijkste vrouwen in mijn leven. Mijn moeder kon wéér niet boos zijn.”

Lauryn Hill is natuurlijk ook een belangrijke

Girlhood heeft gemaakt en met wier nichten ik in de klas zat. Visual Poetry is een platform zonder regels. Iemand heeft een idee en dan werken we dat uit. Zonder do’s-and-don’ts, heel experimenteel. Die clip is bijvoorbeeld goeddeels met een iPhone gefilmd tijdens trips naar Parijs, LA en Berlijn, en in mijn appartement in Gent.”

“Hollywood is aan het flashen op Martha,” vertelde Adil El Arbi na de release van Black over zijn hoofdrolspeelster. Wil ze dat met haar muziek ook bereiken? “Dat flashen viel wel mee, ik heb een paar audities gedaan, maar mijn Amerikaanse accent was niet sterk genoeg. (Lacht) Ik heb nog tijd.” Het voorbije jaar was ze vooral met acteren zoet. Momenteel is ze galerie-assistente van Natali Broods in Over water, straks is ze te zien in Cleo, een film van Eva Cools, Baptiste, een reeks die op BBC 1 komt, en A girl from Mogadishu, een Belgisch-Ierse productie. “Mensen zien mij in de eerste plaats als actrice, terwijl ik ook zing en schrijf. Dat zijn allemáál gelijkwaardige delen van Martha. Je gaat mij nog op het scherm zien, maar dit jaar wil ik vooral de stage ownen.” vrouw, net als Missy Elliott, M.I.A. en Erykah Badu. En Nina Simone? “Ja, zeker. Zij was zo iemand die al van heel jong begreep wie ze was.

Op haar twaalfde moest ze een keer optreden in een kerk. Haar ouders mochten niet vooraan zitten omdat ze zwart waren. Ze weigerde op te treden tot ze daar wél mochten plaatsnemen. Ik vind het knap als de artiest achter het werk ook heel sterk is.”

Martha Da’ro baant ook vastberaden haar eigen weg. De videoclip van ‘Summer blues’ heeft ze bijvoorbeeld zelf geregisseerd, samen met Yaqine Hamzaoui, met wie ze het collectief Visual Poetry vormt. “Ik heb Yaqine leren kennen via Heleen Declerq, een fantastische regisseur en cameravrouw die de kortfilm

The Brums is een avontuurlijk viertal uit Luik dat jazzy koper en grillig wriemelende elektronica in hetzelfde bad gooit, waarna beide beestjes elkaar lustig kunnen besnuffelen. En dat met de energie van een klezmerband. Nee, dit is geen muziek om bij te blijven stilstaan.

Zijn naam zegt het al: Mr Clasik – het alias van de jonge Belgische rapper met Griekse roots Dimitris Lemonias – houdt van klassieke, naar de nineties verwijzende hiphop. Denk aan Wu-Tang Clan, Nas en A Tribe Called Quest, denk aan samples van seventiessoul, denk aan stevig spitten.

Ozferti is de one-man band van de Franse beatmaker en tekenaar Florian Doucet. De mengelmoes die hij onder zijn alias fabriceert, noemt hij zelf afrogrime, ethiohop of Nubian bass.

Call it what you want, maar het is verdomd verslavend exotisch, aan de kosmos likkend spul.

Frankrijk en elektronica hebben altijd vruchtbare huwelijken opgeleverd.

Il y a du Dr Jekyll et Mr Hyde chez le collectif Gogolplex, trois jeunes Français établis à Bruxelles qui réalisent des vidéos déjantées pour Stikstof ou Juicy et qui livrent des films ripolinés à des entreprises et administrations, a priori sérieuses. Et avec tout ça, ils ont trouvé le temps de créer une installation pour Dream Box, la nouvelle exposition du MIMA. — GILLES BECHET • PHOTOS: IVAN PUT

L

e gogolplex est un nombre qui compte tellement de zéros qu’il est impossible à écrire et qui est plus grand que le nombre estimé d’atomes dans l’univers. Les membres du collectif Gogolplex ont eu le bon sens de se limiter à trois. Pour l’infini, il faut le chercher dans l’esthétique de montage de leurs vidéos où les images se télescopent dans le plus grand désordre apparent. C’est dans un bâtiment industriel à proximité de la place communale de Molenbeek qu’Antoine, Aurélien et Philémon ont établi leur quartier général. En ce début 2019, leur priorité c’est de boucler l’installation qu’ils présentent au MIMA tout proche dans le cadre de l’exposition Dream Box. « Ce sera un parcours interactif qui joue sur l’angoisse des administrations et de tout ce genre d’endroits où l’on sent la moquette et on ne sait pas pourquoi il faut attendre, » explique Antoine. Ils n’en diront pas beaucoup plus pour préserver la surprise. Au milieu du désordre qui résulte de la cohabitation dans un même espace avec plusieurs créateurs, une illustratrice et un créateur de bijoux, émergent quelques bornes interactives défraîchies. « On les a récupérées chez Actiris et on les a trafiquées pour les intégrer à notre installation. Le visiteur y répondra à quelques questions et à l’issue de son parcours il recevra en échange une œuvre d’art personnalisée en réalité augmentée. » Les Gogolplex sont arrivés à Bruxelles, il y a dix ans, avec deux envies, quitter la France et faire du cinéma documentaire. Ils s’étaient rencontrés au lycée de Fessenheim en option cinéma et ils y avaient surtout fait de la théorie. Dès leur arrivée dans la capitale belge, ils ont sorti leurs caméras

et réalisé un film sur les services gériatriques de la Clinique Saint-Jean. « On aurait voulu se concentrer sur le documentaire, mais ça n’intéressait pas grand monde, alors on s’est éparpillé dans des expériences visuelles qui font mal aux yeux. »

EN MODE DIY Émergeant là où on ne les attendait pas, c’est en clippant la scène rap flamande de Bruxelles que les Français de Gogolplex se sont fait un nom.

Comme toutes les belles rencontres, c’est le fruit du hasard. « On avait réalisé un montage de vidéos psychédéliques pour l’Expérience Claude Silver au cinéma Nova. Un des rappeurs de Stikstof est venu nous voir après la projection pour nous demander de leur faire un clip. » Le courant est plutôt bien passé puisqu’ils ont illustré cinq chansons pour la bande à Omar-G et, dans la foulée, pour le collectif Le 77 ou pour le duo féminin Juicy.

Comme de parfaits caméléons, les gogols s’adaptent au sujet et s’amusent à changer d’univers et de style à chaque livraison. Pour chacun des clips réalisés pour Stikstof, ils ont changé de style. « On écoute toujours très attentivement ce que racontent les artistes, mais on ne fait jamais rien de ce qu’ils ont demandé, » s’amuse Aurélien. Entre les effets graphiques DIY sur Dobberman, les images de caméra de surveillance baveuses sur Gele Blokken et les images à 360 degrés dans le vertigineux clip de Frontal, on ne voit pas trop le lien. « Notre but, c’est de ne pas nous arrêter à une seule technique et de montrer qu’on peut

« C’est ce qui nous insupporte qui nous inspire le plus » faire beaucoup de choses avec peu de moyens et un matériel basique. Pour Ja Dan, par exemple, on s’est amusé à faire de la 3D mais en lo-fi. Il y a dans beaucoup de clips une tendance au 3D léché. Nous, on trouve ça drôle de montrer qu’on peut le faire avec trois fois rien. » Ce serait une erreur de réduire Gogolplex à leur esthétique bricolée, car depuis leurs débuts, ils se sont efforcés d’autofinancer leurs productions.

Du coup, à côté de leurs petits films foutraques, ils travaillent aussi sur commande pour des cabinets d’avocats, des entreprises ou des institutions pour qui ils font semblant d’être sages et de ne pas trop faire trembler l’image. « C’est ce qui nous insupporte qui nous inspire le plus. On se nourrit de tout ce qu’on fait. Et l’ironie, c’est notre ADN. » On ne peut pas s’appeler Gogolplex sans glisser peu à peu dans une dimension parallèle. Les trois faiseurs d’images ont beau ne pas savoir quelle planète ils squattent, ce

n’est apparemment pas celle de l’art. « On a été un peu surpris, et en même temps ravis et honorés, que le MIMA fasse appel à nous. On ne s’est jamais positionnés comme artistes. On veut faire des films documentaires et de fiction et on se retrouve un peu malgré nous dans le monde de l’art contemporain. » Après Dream Box, les gogols vont prendre le temps d’écrire le scénario de leur premier film de fiction. « On a des idées qui traînent, mais c’est encore très vague », glisse Philémon. « On sait ce qu’on a envie et ce qu’on n’a pas envie de faire. Il y aura de la science-fiction et ça ne rentrera pas dans les schémas trop balisés. » Si on peut se fier aux affiches de films épinglées aux murs de leur repère, on les découvrira peut-être un jour avec d’autres ovnis du festival Offscreen.

Damascus shines at the Moussem Cities festival EN

The whole of February, the Moussem Cities festival will shine a light on Damascus, the epicentre of the contemporary Syrian art scene before the devastating conflict. Before that, a miniature version of the festivities took place mid-January at the Station, a cutting-edge cultural space in Beirut. eirut, mid-January. At the Station, the Moussem Cities festival is staging a two-day preview of the festivities that will bring Brussels to life for the whole of February.

We are here to meet Syrian artists who have tried their luck in the Arab metropolis as well as independent artists who continue, despite the constraints, to create and perform in Damascus. Located in a converted timber factory, away from the wide busy avenues of Beirut, the Station is shrouded in darkness once the sun sets and the moon comes out. In the black of night, illuminated by a few distant skyscrapers, a young and tuned-in audience finds its way to this vibrant and cosmopolitan spot, a key part of the city’s independent cultural scene.

“This place is called the Station but, in my opinion, the whole of Lebanon is a station. It is so intense and so small. People just come and go,” says Tarek Khuluki, virtuoso guitarist of Tanjaret Daghet (“pressure cooker” in Arabic), who were invited to heat things up at the Moussem mini-festival along with musician friends from Damascus whom the band used to play with back before Syria became a battlefield. Since then, they have each gone their own way. “The keyboard player decided to stay in Damascus, because he wanted to play for big bands and be a member of the Syrian National Orchestra,” explains Khaled Omran, the band’s lyricist and bass player. “We chose to move to Beirut because we needed to capture that sound and continue our journey. People are more open here, they accept your experience, and respect what you are doing.”

A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE Tarek Khuluki and Khaled Omran’s four-piece moved to the Lebanese capital in 2011, hoping to make a career there. It didn’t take long for them to find a producer and make a name for themselves within the Lebanese music scene and beyond. “We were trying to survive, and Beirut was the nearest option,” says Khuluki.

“The scene here is exposed to people from all

around the world, like you guys. And our families still get to visit us.”

“We don’t want to stay here as much as we want to be heard,” answers Khuluki when we ask him if the group intend to settle in Beirut for good. Despite the draconian conditions for gaining entry to Europe, the band have not lost hope that one day they will be able to tour beyond the borders of the Arab world, to share their music and their message. “Some people throw these ideas at us: why are you playing music while serious things are happening, while people are dying? But what they don’t understand is that we are trying to make a statement to the people who are still alive,”

Théâtre National (in Belgium) and whom we had met the previous day in his studio space in a southern suburb of Beirut. “The arrival of Syrian artists in Lebanon has enriched the Lebanese art scene. The artists began to mix and so did the audiences,” says the director of Koon Theater Group (whose shows Above Zero and The Other Side of the Garden were performed in Brussels in 2017 and 2018).

Disillusioned with the censored traditional theatre in Syria, Ossama Halal went to Beirut in 2013 seeking greater freedom of expression, in terms of both content and form – in 2012, following the creation of Cellophane, the ministry of culture let him know that his shows were no longer welcome in Syria.

The war is not an excuse” says Khuluki. “Don’t give up! The war is not an excuse.” Omran adds, “We came into this world to do what we do with or without the war: playing music and sharing feelings. We cannot stop the war, but we can make songs about it and share experiences through our music.” The group transmits that lust for creating directly to its audience. Hearing Tanjaret Daghet and friends play is like a rollercoaster ride. It’s a journey through an infinite spectrum of emotions, shaped by rich and eclectic musical influences which remind you that we are all inhabitants of the same planet: Arab vocals and tones, pop, rock, hard rock, metal, etc.

In the audience, which includes Lebanese, Syrians, and expats, we spot the Syrian director Ossama Halal, who has worked with the

Unlike many of his compatriots, Osama Halal has been able to perform in Europe, thanks to the reputation he has built with his outstandingly visually powerful, multidisciplinary theatrical creations, and with TV soaps that were hugely popular in the Arab world when he still worked for Syrian television. “When I first arrived in Europe, I could tell that there was something sexy about being a Syrian director.

People liked to see me as a victim making art, but that’s an image I completely reject,” says Halal, who also refuses to be considered an artist “in exile”. “In my shows, I don’t explore the Syrian revolution or violence in itself, I invite each person to ask themselves how they would have perceived the events if they had been there.”

It was in Lebanon that Halal was able to open his first creative studio and workshops and founded his troupe Koon (“Be!” in Arabic), which includes Syrian, Lebanese, and French artists. “This place is a dream for me!”, says Halal, who has no intention of trading in the Arab world for Europe despite the precarious conditions in which the Lebanese art scene operates, deprived of any state funding and gripped by censorship (to a lesser degree than in Syria). “My work makes a lot more sense in

Beirut and the region. Theatre is a political act and the Arab regimes are afraid of it.” Without the support of the ministry of culture, Ossama Halal explains that he depends on his own means and on occasional help from Ettijahat (an organisation that promotes independent artists from Syria and is a partner of the Moussem Cities festival), the Arab Fund for Arts & Culture, and institutions resulting from foreign involvement in the Middle East such as the Institut Français and the Goethe-Institut.

While waiting for the right moment to make his return to the scene in Damascus, where he is convinced he “has a role to play”, Halal has begun the application process for Lebanese residence. The artist has high hopes of being among those fortunate enough to be selected, despite growing pressure and propaganda from the Lebanese government aimed at encouraging Syrian refugees to return home.

Although separated from Damascus, Ossama Halal’s company recently started organising open days for students from the Syrian capital.

“But in practice, they are rarely able to come.”

“We have difficulties coming to Beirut. We need a purpose that we could justify, and it’s very expensive,” says Angela Al-Debs, a young dancer from Damascus, whose performance of Joufoun (“Eyelids”) with the Syrian artist and choreographer Rana Karam was one of the

highlights of the Moussem Cities mini-festival in Beirut. “The fact that we had the opportunity to put this show on outside of Syria gives me hope in my moments of despair.”

INDEPENDENT IN SYRIA “We only see the outside world on YouTube,” says the 23-year-old dancer, who recently graduated from the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts in Damascus, the only one of its kind in Syria. “Every artist in the world travels from one country to another, you know. We need people to come to us and share, we need to do workshops abroad.” Though she hopes to go to Europe to do a master’s, the young woman has no intention of leaving the country for good.

“We had to face a lot of problems at our institute because of the lack of teachers and money. Sometimes the school was closed, but we didn’t want to just stay at home and watch TV. Because we are the ones who can create a new generation for the Syrian people. I don’t want to leave Damascus, I just want the world to know that there are a lot of artists and a lot of art in Syria, that we are working and that we exist in the world. People think there’s no culture in Damascus, but that’s not true.”

The war defaced the Syrian landscape, but it also transformed its serene sky into a maelstrom of smoke and fire.

The collective exhibition “Kashash” (“keeper or breeder of pigeons” in Arabic), curated by Alma Salem, invites artists, researchers, and pigeon-keepers to reclaim the roofs and high places of Damascus, which were brutally confiscated by the conflict. Considered the “queen of the qanun”, a stringed instrument that is plucked, which is very widespread in the Arab world and with which she fell in love at the age of nine during a taxi ride, Maya Youssef enchanted the whole world with her first album Syrian Dreams, released in 2017. It compelled them to finally express themselves the way they wanted, despite the threats and intimidation. To prevent all this productivity from simply evaporating, a project entitled “The Creative Memory of the Syrian Revolution” set about preserving this wealth of Syrian cultural heritage on a website. I had felt like I was a tool of the director. I wanted to start working on my own project, a project with no words, because words no longer have any meaning,” Karam explains. “It’s true, I have thought about leaving the country, but I felt that that wasn’t me, that I had to do what I could here. In times of war, people either want to see something funny or something about the war. I didn’t want to do anything like that.”

(Laughter) Made outside of the Bashar al-Assad government-stamped circuit, Joufoun belongs to the independent scene in Damascus, which operates in an environment of precariousness, solidarity, and resourcefulness. It’s a scene that has lost many artists who took the route of exile (and some for whom returning is not an option) but which, due to geography, has been spared from the worst of the destruction. “It was important for me not to be influenced either by the government or by politicians, or anyone else,” insists Karam.

At a time when Damascus is being rebuilt, when the media are announcing the imminent end of the war, and embassies are timidly reopening their doors, what will become of the vibrant independent Syrian art scene? The war scattered it, but did not succeed in tearing it apart. The war damaged it, but did not succeed in extinguishing it. Quite the opposite. Here’s the proof.

human fear, the fear that immobilises us and prevents us from moving forward along the path of our existence. “I know that some audience members relate our show to the war in Syria,” says Angela Al-Debs. “But it isn’t necessarily about the war. All over the world, people have to face their most profound fears.”

“As artists, it’s true that the war took away some of our fear,” adds Rana Karam, aged 34.

Met de klok mee lopen negen grote gewestwegen vanuit Brussel de wijde wereld in. Koen Boesman maakte een theaterstuk over de negende, richting Gent. Wij wandelden met hem en enkele partners in crime van de kleine ring over laag- naar hoog-Molenbeek.

n de voorstelling zit een discussie of dit hier nu de bron dan wel de monding is,” lacht Koen Boesman. Hij is altijd al gefascineerd geweest door de steenweg, die voorbij de grote ring genadeloos door het Vlaamse platteland klieft. Al pendelend tussen woonplaats Melle en Brussel sakkerde hij vaak op wat na de komst van de E40 een tweederangsbaan is geworden. “Een betonnen darmkanaal van Vlaanderen,” noemt hij ze.

“Maar in haar lelijkheid kan ze ook ontroeren, én verbinden.”

Vlak voor ons vertrek stelt hij in De Walvis twee compatriotten voor: actrice Ellen Valkenborgs van het Brusselse amateurtheatergezelschap D°eFFeKt en zanger Mohamed “Moumy” Chahou, die als vertegenwoordiger van het Molenbeekse culturele veld voor Boesman de brug vormt naar de lokale gemeenschap. Een dik halfjaar geleden begon hier aan de Vlaamsepoort ook hun eerste verkenningstocht, die hen naast heel wat vreemde blikken na drie dagen stappen, fietsen en liften toch vooral een schat aan anekdotes en verhalen opleverde. Een synthese daarvan zit in N9

maakt N9, dat binnenkort te zien is in de gemeenchapscentra De Vaartkapoen en De Platoo. “Ik wilde dat het hele project met de baan verbonden was,” zegt Boesman. “De spelers zijn Gentenaren, Aalstenaren, Ledenaren, Brusselaars… De technicus is van Wetteren, de decorbouwer van Aalst. Maar ook alle repetitie- en speelplekken liggen min of meer langs het traject.”

Eigenlijk hebben we het verkeerde moment uitgekozen voor onze Walk, want waar het anders krioelt van het volk is het nu relatief rustig in de talloze klerenwinkels, kappers- en meubelzaken. “Dat komt omdat sommige winkeleigenaars sluiten tijdens de middag of het vrijdaggebed,” legt Chahou uit. “Maar vergis je niet: zoals wij uit heel het land afzakken naar de Meir of de Nieuwstraat, zo komt de Marokkaanse en Turkse gemeenschap van overal naar hier of naar de Brabantstraat in Schaarbeek,” vervolgt Boesman. “Ik kom zelf ook graag. Als je op zoek bent naar specifieke theaterrekwisieten, zoals bijvoorbeeld schoenen die niet te duur zijn, dan kan je hier je gading vinden.”

LEVENDIGE UITEINDEN We houden even halt bij Tax Free Forum. Alleen het laatste deel van de naam van de meubelwinkel en de beschermde voorgevel herinneren hierbuiten nog aan de hoogdagen van de allereerste cinema van de quartier. Met zijn bijna 1.500 zitplaatsen was het een van de grootste van de hoofdstad. “Je kan dat vergane glorie noemen, maar anders dan op het ellenlange middenstuk van de N9 – met veel teloorgegane industrie en verrassend groene stukken – is het hier wel blijven leven,” schetst Boesman het veranderde straatbeeld. “Tof is ook dat de uiteinden van de steenweg op elkaar lijken: in Ledeberg, tegen Gent, is het ook erg levendig en volop in beweging.”

De eerste migratiegolf bestond trouwens vooral uit West-Vlamingen, die hier ook als vervelende vreemdelingen werden beschouwd.” Als we later de Jules Delhaizestraat passeren, wordt de reden van die eerste migratiegolf duidelijk.

“Links ligt nog steeds de historische hoofdzetel van Delhaize,” zegt Boesman. “Het distributiecentrum van de warenhuisketen, die zich langs de steenweg ontwikkelde, ligt inmiddels elders op de N9, maar de charmante arbeidershuisjes in rode steen – en de chiquere herenhuizen voor het hogere kader – zijn er nog steeds.” Ze werden destijds speciaal aangelegd voor de werknemers van Delhaize en zorgen voor wat architecturale consistentie op een steenweg die meer en meer gedomineerd zal worden door een typisch Vlaamse mikmak van stijlen en smaken. Al moet je dat laatste volgens Boesman ook relativeren.

vormen hierbij het beste illustratiemateriaal. “Ze bieden de fietsers intussen terecht meer bescherming tegen het verkeer in de drukke chaussée, maar toen de aannemer ze destijds kwam plaatsen zonder voorafgaand overleg met de buurt, brak er een kleine volksopstand uit.

Winkeliers pikten het niet dat hun parking werd afgepakt. De aannemer heeft zijn paaltjes opnieuw mee moeten nemen. Een buitenstaander die zich komt moeien, roept weerstand op, en eigenlijk is het ook wel mooi dat mensen zich verenigen voor een gemeenschappelijk doel.”

Dat de buurt echter vooral in het nieuws komt als samenscholingen uitmonden in vernielzuchtige roofpartijen zit ook Chahou dwars. De kleurrijke vlaggetjes die schoolkinderen ophingen aan metrohalte Zwarte Vijvers als protest tegen de oudejaarsrellen zijn volgens hem een welgekomen demarche. “Onze buurt heeft zulke positieve signalen nodig.

De toekomst is niet verloren. Laag-Molenbeek is door het bestuur lang genegeerd geweest. Pas recent is er meer ruimte voor stadsvernieuwing.”

LOSGESCHROEFDE LAMPEN De drijfveren van sommige politici zijn trouwens niet zo verschillend van die van winkeliers. Tijdens hun tocht langs de N9 kwamen de steenwegverkenners te weten dat de gemeenteraad niet vergadert in het gemeentehuis (in laag-Molenbeek), zoals dat wettelijk is voorgeschreven, maar in een kasteeltje in hoog-Molenbeek. “Daar is parkeerruimte voor hun Mercedessen en BMW’s,” zegt Boesman. “Om naar een chiquere locatie te kunnen uitwijken, hebben ze destijds met opzet enkele lampen losgeschroefd in de raadzaal en die hangen veertig jaar later nog steeds los.”

“De voorstelling zit vol met zulke faits divers,” zegt Valkenborgs. “Voor mij was het cruciaal dat het geen losse flodders waren, maar dat de

nadruk lag op het verbindende karakter van de steenweg.” Chahou denkt dat N9 maakt N9 gemeenschappen dichter bij elkaar kan brengen. “Er was altijd veel culturele beweging in Molenbeek, maar dit stuk gaat over iets wat ons echt verbindt, een steenweg die taal en cultuur overstijgt.”

Als we onze wandeling willen afsluiten in Le Vieux Karreveld krijgen we finaal nog een schoolvoorbeeld van de veranderingscultuur. “De naam van dat volkscafé vond ik een mooie synthese van het Brusselse luik van onze trip, en zit daarom ook in de voorstelling,” zegt Boesman. Maar nu kan hij het café niet terugvinden. Blijkt dat we er zijn voorbijgelopen. Le Vieux Karreveld is Epicérie Karreveld geworden. Geen pintjes of koffies hier, maar etenswaren uit Oost-Europa. Of hoe deze buurt zich steevast aanpast aan haar bewoners, en niet omgekeerd, en ook Boesman zijn tekst opnieuw kan aanpassen.

Genre-bending pianists add colour to Flagey’s Piano Days

The instrument inspires. We spoke to three young pianists, each approaching the piano in their own way, in their own genre. “Honestly, I don’t think much about genre.

Op de Piano Days kan Flagey dankzij het toetseninstrument bruggen slaan tussen muzikale genres. BRUZZ vroeg drie jonge pianisten hoe zij zich profileren in een muziekwereld waarin de grenzen tussen stijlen steeds vager worden.

“I mean, you just have to do what’s natural to you. I don’t compare myself to other artists.” That’s the answer you get when you ask the British Poppy Ackroyd how she makes her way as a young pianist.

Which she has. Both as a musician with Joe Acheson’s Hidden Orchestra and as a solo artist, releasing two very diverse albums on Björk’s label One Little Indian.

Ackroyd herself is classically trained on the violin and the piano. That classical sound came to the forefront on the minimal Sketches. However, on her latest album Resolve she infuses that classical sound with dreamy synths. Because of that, she easily gets compared to neoclassical composers like Nils Frahm. “It’s such a stupid label, don’t you think?

It’s just way too broad. They tend to use ‘neoclassical’ for everyone who grew up listening to classical and electronic music. I mean, Shostakovich used to be called a neoclassical composer and nowadays the label applies to both me and Max Richter. But I wouldn’t say my music sounds similar to either one of those.”

“Neoclassical, that’s such a stupid label, don’t you think?”

In case you were still wondering. Poppy Ackroyd is not a big fan of people trying to define her music. “I like the idea of everything being fluid. Twenty years ago, a musician and his audience were in a box. You listened to punk, or jazz, or hip hop, or classical... Nowadays you can listen to anything at the click of a button. That’s great for a listener but also for a musician, because you can get inspired by all these different people.”

So it’s not all bad news, this Spotify generation. “Obviously it has its flaws, like the fact that you need an insane amount of plays to actually make money. But yeah, I like the fact that it’s so much easier now to access all the music in the world. It gives you a broader palette of styles you could work with. It doesn’t immediately make me go: ‘Oh I heard this or that and now I want to make an album like that.’ To me it’s just another step in the process of developing my music into a sound that I like.” Very fluid indeed. 7/2, 22.15

Reviewers cannot find enough superlatives to describe the qualities of the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. After the release of his first album for Deutsche Grammophon, people hailed him as the best interpreter of Philip Glass. Now, with his new Bach album, he’s being called the best Bach performer of his generation. “At first people wanted me to keep playing minimalist music, now they scream that I must keep playing Bach. But for me it’s important to stick to what I love. That’s where I feel I can make the difference as an artist: by convincing your audience that you’re honest about the music you play.” Ólafsson agrees that the existence of a musical canon can sometimes be limiting. “There’s an older generation of listeners who are embedded with this canon. But for me it feels like there’s a newer generation standing up. People who want to breathe new life into the classical music scene. Of course, it’s all about balance. You can’t stop playing iconic works all of a sudden.”

From his bedroom to worldwide recognition: that’s about the easiest way to describe the career path of Jacob Collier. The young British multi-instrumentalist started off arranging popular songs and theme tunes in his YouTube videos. These raked in millions of views and won him two Grammy awards in 2017.

His sophomore album Djesse (Vol. 1) is the first of a self-proclaimed “four-album journey through every different musical genre under the sun.” So what should you make of his music? “I don’t think much about genre. The concept doesn’t really exist anymore. In 2019, particularly for us millennials, musicians are free to explore whatever styles they wish, learn about these styles, and connect with musicians all over the world. It’s a great time to be creative.”

“I don’t agree with strict categorization, you can’t pinpoint art” Though he has recorded music from very diverse time periods, up till now Ólafsson has always stuck to the classical repertoire. “But if I had a choice, I’d prefer to be called a musical instead of a classical pianist. I just don’t agree with strict categorization, you can’t pinpoint art. Even in the classical repertoire there are composers like Gershwin who lean more towards jazz. That fluidity between genres is only becoming more and more obvious now that there’s immediate access to so much music and the sheer volume of music continues to grow as well.”

But that growing fluidity between genres doesn’t immediately inspire him to actually break out of his own genre. “Immensely interesting things have happened on the crossroads between folk, jazz, and classical. The Swedish composer Jan Johansson for example. I don’t want to say right now that I’m never going to do an album with music like that. Because who knows, maybe one day I’ll feel really passionate about it. And like I said, you need that passion to play to the fullest of your possibilities.” 9/2, 14.00

Keeping it classical

“From Stevie Wonder to Bach and Herbie Hancock to Keith Jarrett, it’s all the same language to me” Even though he is billed nearly everywhere as a jazz musician, and he’s being mentored by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier wants to be a lot more than that. “I certainly don’t think of myself as a jazz musician or a jazz pianist. The musical tradition of the piano is rich, but I’ve always listened to many kinds of music inside that tradition. From Stevie Wonder to Bach to Bartók to Keith Jarrett to Herbie Hancock. It’s all the same language to me. My job as a creative person is to describe a universe that sounds authentic to me. I’ll leave it up to other people to define where I fit in that tradition.”

That doesn’t sound like he’s too bothered by this lack of a label for his music. As long as his voice gets heard. “I think it’s a great privilege to make a living by creating things and sharing them with people, especially if these people come to admire you for being yourself. If you have something to say, opportunities to reach people are always of value.” 11/2, 20.15

If films were to be judged on their political merits, Green Book would fail.

But excellent actors and adept directing make this inversed Driving Miss Daisy an entertaining experience. — NIELS RUËLL

t is completely ridiculous that Green Book has been nominated for an Oscar for best film, but the breath-taking If Beale Street Could Talk by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins has not. But of course that is not Green Book’s fault. This light-hearted crowd-pleaser was directed by Peter Farrelly, who is best known for his vulgar but usually very funny comedies that he makes with his brother Bobby, like There's Something About Mary.

Here he has romanticized the true story of the friendship between piano virtuoso Don Shirley and the bouncer Tony Lip. In the early 1960s, the black musician Shirley made it a point of honour to tour around the Deep South, which was dominated by toxic racism and still governed by an Apartheid regime. The title refers to The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide listing the few places to eat and sleep that would welcome black customers. To ensure that the perilous enterprise does not end in disaster, Shirley hires a white Eyetie from the Bronx as a driver and fixer: Tony Lip. The two are opposites: Shirley is elitist, rich, literary, lonely, and very thin.

Tony Lip is a common, poor family man whose belly betrays his love of food. It is not a spoiler to reveal that he starts out as a racist but ends up a changed man. You know from the get-go that black and white will grow closer together and learn a lot from one another. This inversed Driving Miss Daisy is not interested in dramatic surprises, but focuses on simple humour and the almost old-fashioned

purpose of making you feel good. But the politically astute opinion makers who reproach Green Book for its simplistic message and irrelevance are not completely wrong. On the other hand, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, who have both been nominated for Oscars, make it very difficult not to empathize with their imperfect characters. Warming oneself on a friendship that is growing increasingly ardent is almost never wrong.

Voor een tournee door de racistische zuiderse staten huurt de zwarte pianovirtuoos Don Shirley begin jaren 1960 de blanke buitenwipper Tony Lip in als chauffeur en fikser. De twee zijn tegengestelden, maar groeien naar elkaar toe. De omgekeerde Driving Miss Daisy moet het niet hebben van dramatische verrassingen, maar van de betrachting je een goed gevoel te bezorgen.

De boodschap is simplistisch, maar Mortensen en Ali, allebei genomineerd voor een Oscar, maken het erg moeilijk om niet mee te leven met hun imperfecte personages.

Tout les oppose mais les circonstances les rapprochent. Cette version inversée de Miss Daisy et son chauffeur n’offre pas de ressorts dramatiques, mais son intention est de vous faire vous sentir bien. Le message est simpliste, mais Mortensen et Ali, tous deux nominés pour un Oscar, font en sorte qu’il est très difficile de ne pas compatir avec leurs personnages imparfaits.

Nue Propriété ! Élève libre ! À Perdre la raison ! Le Bruxellois Joachim Lafosse a offert à plusieurs reprises des expériences intenses au spectateur. Il mérite qu’on ne lui reproche pas trop lourdement la seule fois où il n’arrive pas à faire en sorte que le spectateur croit ce qu’il voit ni à le défier intellectuellement. Est-ce dû au piètre scénario, aux conditions de tournage, à la malchance ?

Au profane de deviner. Dans une ultime tentative de se réconcilier avec un fils renfrogné (Kacey Mottet Klein) dont elle ne s’est pas occupée, une Française parlant le russe (Virginie Efira) traverse le Kirghizistan à cheval. Autant le paysage est époustouflant, autant les rapports entre la mère et son fils sont froids. Les aventures et le temps qu’ils doivent passer ensemble finissent par entamer l’idée qu’ils n’ont absolument rien à se dire. Malheureusement, nous sommes dans la tête du réalisateur, du scénariste et de l’auteur du roman adapté mais jamais dans celle des personnages. La magnifique scène qui se termine avec un fils qui danse au sommet d’une montagne nous fait attendre avec impatience le film qui succédera à Continuer. (NR)

Hoe beschrijf je de hel van een hybride oorlogssituatie die de mens hopeloos corrumpeert? Sergei Loznitsa, de regisseur van baanbrekende documentaires als Maidan, probeert het met een voortzetting van de bizarre mix die een succes maakte van de speelfilm A gentle creature, een wanstaltige afspiegeling van het ontmenselijkte Rusland van president Poetin. Donbass is nog grimmiger, militanter en grotesker. Gecontroleerd grotesk, niet ik-doe-zomaar-wat grotesk. Geïnspireerd door filmpjes die Loznitsa online terugvond, toont hij in dertien vignetten hoe het eraan toegaat in het Donetsbekken. In die regio in Oost-Oekraïne smeult nog altijd een oorlog die niet kan opflakkeren zonder geopolitiek dramatische gevolgen. Door Rusland gesteunde pro-Russische separatisten strijden er met het door vrijwilligers en dubieuze paramilitaire groeperingen gesteunde Oekraïense leger. Niet het conflict wordt getoond maar de ineenstorting van een samenleving: corruptie woekert, fatsoen verdwijnt, de middeleeuwse schandpaal is terug en nieuwsitems worden zonder blikken of blozen geënsceneerd.

Loznitsa suggereert dat de realiteit in Donbass ongecontroleerd grotesk is. (NR)

Zo overweldigend is het landschap, zo kil is de relatie tussen de twee. Maar het avontuur brengt hen dichter bij elkaar. Helaas raken we nooit in de hoofden van de personages.

Donbass est encore plus sombre, militant et grotesque que les films précédents du réalisateur russe Sergei Loznitsa (Maïdan, Une Femme douce). Il dépeint, en treize saynètes, la situation dans le bassin du Donets. Dans cette région de l’est de l'Ukraine, une guerre couve encore, qui ne peut éclater sans conséquences géopolitiques dramatiques.

Ce n’est pas le conflit qui est montré, mais la déliquescence d’une société : la corruption sévit, la bienséance disparaît et les infos sont mises en scène de façon crue.

The Brussels-based Joachim Lafosse (Elève libre, À perdre la raison) has given his audiences intense experiences before, but his new film falls short. To finally reconcile with her recalcitrant son (Kacey Mottet Klein), a Russian-speaking Frenchwoman (Virginie Efira) travels across Kyrgyzstan on horseback. The landscape is as overwhelming as the relationship between the two is frosty. But their adventure brings them closer together. Unfortunately, we never really get inside the characters’ minds.

Donbass is darker, more militant, and more grotesque than Russian director Sergey Loznitsa’s earlier work (Maidan, A Gentle Creature). In thirteen vignettes, he shows us what life is like in the Donets Basin. In this region of eastern Ukraine, there is a simmering war that cannot flare up without dramatic geopolitical consequences. We do not see the conflict itself. Rather, Loznitsa focuses on the total societal collapse: corruption is rife, there is not a scrap of decency, and news items are shamelessly staged.

Aux portes de la perception Avec les outils de l’artiste, Léa Belooussovitch aiguise notre regard et explore la distance entre le sujet et sa représentation. En dessins et en photos, entre la présence et l’absence, elle dévoile le réel et ce qu’en disent les images qui nous inondent. — GILLES BECHET voyeurisme en gommant de ces images tout ce qui les rattache au réel, pour rendre aux sujets leur anonymat. L’artiste ne reproduit pas ces photos, elle restitue ce qui l’a imprégnée après les avoir beaucoup regardées.

Le pouvoir de séduction de ces dessins est renforcé par la technique et le matériau choisi. En dessinant aux crayons de couleurs sur des morceaux de feutre industriel, Léa Belooussovitch fait décoller la fibre et crée comme une fine couche de couleur vibrante en suspension entre le

Les grands dessins sur feutre de Léa Belooussovitch ont pour titre une ville, un pays et une date. À première vue, les compositions n’évoquent rien de très précis. Des couleurs acidulées et pastels et des formes comme en suspension.

Dans cette série, la jeune artiste française établie à Bruxelles, s’est inspirée d’événements violents qui inondent la presse, démultipliés par des photos souvent volées de victimes et de témoins qui ne comprennent pas trop ce qu’ils faisaient là. Léa Belooussovitch a voulu prendre le contre-pied de ce

regard du spectateur et le support du dessin. L’effacement qui part d’une réflexion sur la violence des images se poursuit dans l’intime et l’introspectif.

Dans sa série Blue wall of silence, l’artiste efface jusqu’à l’absence pour mieux révéler une présence.

L’œuvre se présente comme une succession de fardes en plastique bleu comme on en trouve dans toutes les administrations.

Chaque farde contient une feuille blanche avec une photo imprimée en haut à gauche. Des photos extraites de vidéos amateurs documentant des bavures policières.

Tout semble normal sauf que la victime a disparu, elle a été effacée avec un logiciel de retouche. Il ne reste plus que des policiers engagés dans une étrange chorégraphie, matraque au bout du bras ou mains agrippant le vide. En effaçant, ce que certains tentent de minimiser ou de nier, elle révèle des événements. Le silence au centre de l’image fait résonner l’indifférence collective.

Plus qu’une dénonciation, ces photos retouchées interrogent notre regard sur le monde. Et tout ce que l’on perçoit sans le voir.

’asbl FOR.E.T. (Formation Emploi Tremplin) existe depuis vingt ans. Son objectif ? « Créer et gérer des actions visant à former et qualifier des chercheurs d’emploi sans qualification et avec peu ou pas d’expérience professionnelle probante. » Voilà une tâche essentielle, notamment dans le contexte des personnes dites « article 60 », soit celles qui sont bénéficiaires du revenu d’intégration sociale (RIS). Pour mettre ces formations en pratique, l’association a eu la bonne idée d’imaginer, il y a quelques années, un restaurant qui met les apprentis en situation concrète. Plus récemment, une table d’hôtes a enrichi le projet. On s’y est rendu le temps d’un déjeuner chaud, malgré le froid ambiant, et lumineux. Cette chaleur est due au personnel en salle - adorable ! - mais également au public varié qui fréquente l’endroit.

On le sait, les tables d’hôtes et leurs contours conviviaux sont à la mode mais elles ne produisent que rarement l’étincelle - en plusieurs décennies de Pain Quotidien, on n’a pas adressé la parole à son voisin pour une autre raison que lui demander le sel. C’est tout le contraire qui s’est produit à Foresto : un déjeuner entier à parler avec une personne que l’on ne verra peut-être plus jamais mais dont on se souviendra longtemps. C’est que tout ici incite à la confidence. D’abord, le décor, ouvert sur les environs grâce à de grandes baies vitrées scandées de poutres de bois clair. « Cela ressemble un peu à Berlin » nous a confié avec beaucoup de perspicacité notre voisine de table. Deux grandes armoires remplies de vaisselle et de produits locaux

achèvent d’humaniser l’endroit. Et la cuisine ?

Elle fait plus que se défendre, comme en témoigne un très onctueux potage aux choux de Bruxelles et au bacon croquant (3,20 euros). Mention pour le goût légèrement torréfié de la préparation. Le plat ? Il est incroyablement généreux, soit un feuilleté aux épinards (8,90 euros) qui n’est pas sans rappeler le spanakopita grec. Farci de féta et de pignons de pin, la préparation est enrobée d’une feuille de brick tendre. Elle est accompagnée d’une crème blanche un peu épaisse à la ciboulette. Que faut-il de plus ?

Rien. Le bonheur a ici son couvert.

Lange tafels om maaltijden te delen, zijn erg hip, maar weinigen zijn erin geslaagd om een vibe te creëren zoals die van Foresto. Er hangt een warme, joviale sfeer, met dank aan het personeel en aan de bonte bende eetlustigen. Het eten, zoals de dikke soep met spruitjes en knapperig spek (€3,20), of het ongelofelijk genereuze hoofdgerecht, een bladerdeegje met spinazie, feta en pijnboompitten, geserveerd met een romige bieslooksaus (€8,90), laat niets aan de verbeelding over.

Sympathieke filmboetiek Aan curiositeitenwinkels in de Marollen geen gebrek. De kleine straatjes van de authentiekste quartier van Brussel puilen uit van de winkels met prullaria en tweedehandsspullen. De laatste nieuwkomer heet Cinéfétiche, al onderscheidt de winkel zich wel van de doorsneetoeristenval. Op het eerste gezicht is de shop niet zo speciaal. De ruimte is vrij leeg, de decoratie nagenoeg afwezig en de verkoper zit wat verstopt achter een groot scherm.

Maar als je wat dichter kijkt, dan zie je veel passie en toewijding.

Het Franse koppel Diane Dussaud en Othman El Maanouni verhuisde van Parijs naar Brussel om er te wonen, te werken en een winkel te openen voor filmfanaten. Ze werken beiden in de film- en televisie-industrie en delen een enorme passie voor alles wat het witte doek te bieden heeft.

A few years ago, the non-profit organisation FOR.E.T opened a restaurant in which their trainees could gain practical experience. It now features a table d’hôtes. These long tables intended for shared dining are a fashionable concept, but few have succeeded in creating a vibe like the one at Foresto. It is warm and convivial, thanks to both the staff and the variety of people who go there. The food, such as a thick soup made with Brussels sprouts and crispy bacon (€3.20) or an incredibly generous main course of spinach, feta, and pine nuts, wrapped in light pastry and served with a creamy chive sauce (€8.90), leaves nothing to be desired.

Maar, zo vonden ze, de authenticiteit verdwijnt stilaan. Zeker uit het design van filmposters. Die worden doordeweeks en oninteressant. Al helemaal in vergelijking met de filmaffiches van de jaren 1930 of ’50.

Othman en Diane verkopen niet alleen iconische filmposters van Singing in the rain (vanaf 20 euro) maar ook fan art, een genre op zich.

Grafici en illustratoren uit binnen- en buitenland herinterpreteren daarbij klassieke filmposters. Pronkstuk van de te kopen collectie is een poster van de Steven Spielberg-klassieker E.T. van de hand van Laurent Durieux. Er bestaan er maar 150 van, en eentje hangt in Brussel. Kostprijs: 305 euro.

Filmnerds komen hier aan hun trekken, al is het aanbod jammer genoeg beperkt. Sympathiek is de winkel zeker, maar of hij leefbaar is, is iets anders. — TIM DEVRIESE

La nouvelle boutique Cinéfétiche est un lieu convivial où deux cinéphiles donnent libre cours à leur amour des vieilles affiches de cinéma et des objets de collection. L’espace lui-même n’a rien de particulier, mais les gérants respirent la passion et le dévouement.

Une bombe à combustion interne en pleine période punk. Profondément marqué par Bowie, Renaud Cojo revisite ce diptyque berlinois dans un spectacle en trois volets. On y verra un film, le Journal de Nathan Adler lu par Bertrand Belin et accompagné par Stef Kamil Carlens, le film d’une pièce chorégraphique de Louise Lecavalier et la musique que Low et Heroes ont inspiré à Philip Glass interprétée par le Belgian National Orchestra. Aterballetto, one of the big names of contemporary dance in Italy, takes on the music of Bach for the second time. In Sarabande, six dancers perform the Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián’s stripped-back choreography to the Partita No. 2 in D minor. In Domus Aurea, the ballet troupe is accompanied by the French Suites in an imagining of the villa built by Nero after the Great Fire of Rome. In this ideal house, which is created through light projections and minimalist sets by the visual artist from Italy Massimo Uberti, the dancers devise strategies for learning to know themselves and resolving their inner conflicts. Eind 2017 werden ze opgepikt door LeFtO, die het aanstekelijke ‘Steak in the neck’ op zijn Jazz cats-compilatie zwierde, en nu ook door Recyclart, dat op de nieuwe Avant What?-avonden de lokale urban jazz- en elektronicascene nog wat oppookt. Last year, the New York-based pianist, composer, and all-rounder Uri Caine came to the Brussels Jazz Festival to present Agent Orange, an acrobatic balancing act between classical orchestra, saxophone solos and DJ. But he also played a (jazz-tinted) version of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. He is now coming to Bozar to play Bach’s much more famous Goldberg Variations. He has previously made a recording of them, on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the German master’s death, in 1999. The classical purists did everything they could to avoid the hybrid re-enactment. We wonder whether that will be the case again at the Bach Heritage Festival, where Caine will repeat his ambitious project. (TP) EN

De Belgische art-nouveaupionier Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) was een van de invloedrijkste architecten en vormgevers van de twintigste eeuw. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat hij zijn naam leent aan wat nu de grootste designprijzen van België zijn. Dit jaar krijgt toepasselijk Antwerpenaar Vincent Van Duysen de Lifetime Achievement Award. Hij beschouwt architectuur, interieur- en meubelvormgeving als één geheel, en treedt daarmee in de voetsporen van Van de Velde. Though they are found in our squares and in front of our chip shops, they much prefer to picnic in the forest. Catherine Le Goff’s engravings on lino are very different.
