La ville dans l’œil d’un photographe bruxellois

Lara Gasparotto nous invite à descendre dans l’aube, là où les premières lueurs chassent timidement les ombres, dérobent de lascifs instants et révèlent les restes crus de la nuit. Adoptant des formats réduits, l’artiste nous propose d’embrasser, sur la pointe des pieds, un monde de murmures et de confidences. Son écriture photographique, en couleurs ou en noir et blanc, est rythmée, comme décochée par pulsations, mais elle est aussi particulièrement tactile et peut se faire tour à tour âpre ou veloutée. FR

Lara Gasparotto (Liège, 1989) a exposé en solo en Belgique et à l’étranger. Ses photographies ont fait l’objet d’ouvrages tels que Sleepwalk (Yellow Now), Rivages (Lannoo) et Ask the Dusk (Ludion). Elle est représentée par la Galerie Stieglitz19 à Anvers.

Toen de renovatiewerken van zijn werkplaats voor experimentele en avant-gardemuziek en kunst nog moesten beginnen, maar drummer Teun Verbruggen het niet kon laten om alvast enkele concerten te programmeren, konden we op een luie zondagmiddag zowel de Afrikaanse misviering bij de Kuregemse buren volgen als de improvisatieset, twee hoog achteraan in de Van Lintstraat 43 in Anderlecht. Na braak-, isolatie- en bouwwerken zou dat euvel verholpen moeten zijn. De bevlogen jazzman speelt Werkplaats Walter zelf in met een concert van The Bureau of Atomic Tourism, terwijl onder anderen inspiratiebron Walter Swennen tentoonstelt. Vincent Glowinski schildert live, Mauro komt plaatjes draaien en tijdens solosets van Benjamin Sauzereau en Julien Desprez en optredens van Supersilent en Pablo Held Trio waait de wind achtereenvolgens uit Frankrijk, Noorwegen en Duitsland, al kan die behoorlijk draaien op een plek waar kruisbestuivingen schering en inslag zullen zijn. Art and artists’ books have become hot stuff over the past few years, as is evident from the fact that Wiels is hosting its Art Book Fair for the fourth time. One of the highlights of this edition will undoubtedly be the launch of the catalogue of the exhibition “Le pays où tout est permis” (8/9, 2 pm). In that show, Wiels brought Sophie Podolski back into the limelight: a Brussels artist who wrote and drew a radical, unsettling, and dizzying oeuvre at the Montfaucon Research Center in Elsene/Ixelles between 1967 and 1974, before taking her own life at only 21 years old. A tragic figure, who struggled with schizophrenia, society, and the times, but also a poet-artist of mythic proportions who is well worth remembering. (KS) EN

Brusselaar Pieter De Buysser bedenkt al jaren eigenzinnige filosofische theaterparabels in een bezwerende taal. Bij momenten oogt en klinkt zijn unieke universum behoorlijk spaced out en dus hoeft het niet te verbazen dat De Buysser ooit zou belanden where no theatre maker has gone before: in het Planetarium in Ukkel. Voor The tip of the tongue bestijgt hij daar een seizoen lang telkens op de elfde van de maand om 20.11u het podium om in elf fabels kond te doen van zijn verwondering over de sterrenhemel en de kosmische nederigheid die die hem ontlokt. Death Grips is hot. And they have been since they were founded in 2010. Björk invited the inimitable American hip-hop noise trio to remix some tracks. David Bowie’s last album was inspired by their confrontational sound experiment. Which is all just to say that you don’t have to be absolutely crazy to appreciate the aggressive raids of MC Ride and the uninhibited beat and sample jungle of drummer Zach Hill and keyboardist Andy Morin. Year of the Snitch is another album that defies categorization, featuring guests from a variety of backgrounds that even include Shrek director Andrew Adamson. But you absolutely need to experience their energy boost live. Just take some deep breaths as you go in. (TP) EN

Après avoir fait le tour du monde et des magazines en papier glacé les plus prestigieux, les portraits made in Africa de la photographe Namsa Leuba débarquent chez nous, au Hangar, avec son nouveau travail Wéké. Une série de photos et d’installations hallucinées sous influence vaudoue. — SOPHIE SOUKIAS

’est lorsque pointe l’heure bleue, celle qui précède de peu la nuit noire, que Namsa Leuba déclenche. Des flashs lumineux éclairent alors un petit point de brousse ou de village reculé du Bénin, traversé de long en large quelques heures plus tôt par la photographe, en quête de modèles. Vous l’aurez compris, les portraits à la plastique saisissante de l’Helvéto-Guinéenne Namsa Leuba (36 ans) n’ont pas été faits dans le confort d’un studio. Il y avait, certes, de quoi s’y méprendre: ces hommes, femmes et enfants à la peau soyeuse et au regard profond presque sensuel - qui vous met au défi, semblent être des vétérans de la pose. Le temps d’une soirée, ils sont devenus les héros des tableaux fantasmés de Namsa Leuba, « de belles saynètes imaginaires », comme elle aime à les appeler. Ses modèles, l’artiste les pare d’accessoires sacrés de la culture vaudoue mais aussi d’objets triviaux (volaille, filets en plastique, paquets de cigarettes dorés,… tout y passe) qu’elle dépouille de leur symbolique et usage premiers pour leur donner une nouvelle

vie spirituelle, dans un autre univers. Le sien. Dans Wéké, il arrive aussi que la figuration s’efface devant la puissance de l’abstraction. Les images se font alors intensément psychédéliques, rappelant l’état psychique qu’accompagnent certaines pratiques vaudoues.

Parlez-nous de la genèse de Wéké. NAMSA LEUBA: Dans la langue locale du bénin,

Wéké signifie : « l'univers visible et invisible, toutes choses créées, vivant, respirant ou non ». Du côté de ma mère, on est Guinéens musulmans, on ne pratique pas le vaudou. Or c’est une pratique qui m’a beaucoup intéressée. Je me suis donc rendue au Bénin pour suivre différents rituels et rencontrer des prêtres vaudous. Dans le Nord, les artefacts sont moins figuratifs, une divinité peut être symbolisée par un tas de paille ou de cailloux. Dans le Sud, les divinités sont peintes. À travers mes expériences et mes rencontres, j’ai créé des images qui ne sont pas réelles. Je sors les artefacts de leur cosmogonie et j’emmène le spectateur dans un voyage à travers mon

imagination et la manière dont la culture vaudoue a vibré en moi.

Comment ces rituels vaudous se sont-ils emparés de vos images? LEUBA: J’essaie de retranscrire ce que j’ai perçu

lors de ces cérémonies. Chacun ressent le rituel d’une manière différente. Comme dans l’animisme, le vaudou mobilise à la fois le visible et l’invisible. Il y a, d’une part, les choses que j’imagine parce que je ne les vois pas, et, de l’autre, les choses qui m’apparaissent sous la forme de flashs, en fonction de l’état dans lequel je suis plongée.

De la même manière, un spectateur verra des détails dans une de vos images auxquels un autre n’aura pas prêté attention. LEUBA: Exactement. Il se peut qu’il y ait une

part d’exotisme dans le regard occidental parce qu’il n’a pas la connaissance des objets. De la même manière que l’interprétation d’un Béninois sera différente de celle d’un Guinéen, parce que ce dernier ne pratique pas le vaudou

mais partage tout de même une forme commune d’animisme.

Cet exotisme du regard occidental, en jouezvous pour mieux le percer à jour? LEUBA: Je peux me permettre l’exotisme parce

que j’ai une double identité. D’une part, je porte en moi cette culture africaine et, de l’autre, je suis née en Suisse, j’ai étudié en Suisse essentiellement et mon éducation artistique s’est faite en fonction de codes occidentaux. Je joue avec ces codes pour donner vie à des images qui sont très personnelles. En somme, je fais ce qui me plaît.

Wéké mêle photographie, performance, mode et design. Accepteriez-vous de retracer pour nous le processus de création d’une image signée Namsa Leuba? LEUBA: En effet, c’est tout un processus (rires).

Je me rends sur le terrain avec un grand dossier de recherches sous le bras. Une fois sur place, j’essaie d’identifier les matériaux à ma disposition, je m’adapte aux ressources du

pays. À partir de là, je me mets à construire mon image. Je fais parfois appel à des artisans pour m’aider à fabriquer des objets de décor et les costumes. L’environnement, les couleurs et les odeurs m’influencent. Ensuite, je traverse le pays pour trouver l’endroit idéal pour faire la photo. Commence alors un casting sauvage dans la brousse et les villages. J’approche les gens, parfois ils viennent vers moi.

Quels sont les plus grands défis auxquels vous avez dû faire face? LEUBA: Je ne peux pas faire plus d’une ou deux

images par jour parce qu’il y a tout un matériel encombrant à transporter. Il faut préparer les

lumières, les modèles. Comme ce sont des modèles non-professionnels, je cours le risque qu’ils se fatiguent vite. Il peut faire très chaud, sans compter les bestioles et les serpents qui rôdent. J’aime travailler là où il n’y a pas trop de monde parce qu’il arrive que mon travail soit perçu comme un sacrilège, parce que j’ai sorti des outils de leur contexte, parce qu’ils ne correspondent pas à leur représentation d’origine. On me fait parfois des remarques, même si mon projet au Bénin a été plutôt bien accueilli. En Guinée, par contre, mon projet précédent a été nettement moins bien reçu, j’ai même été arrêtée par la police. Quand on touche aux croyances, c’est toujours délicat.

Brussels’s rich and dynamic contemporary art scene is opening the new season with a bang. We seized on the Brussels Gallery Weekend to discover the driving force behind the screens of SUPERDEALS, Harlan Levey Projects, and Galerie Greta Meert. An ode to the gallerist in three conversations. — KURT SNOEKX • PHOTOS: IVAN PUT

ver the past few years, Brussels has developed into an international go-to place for contemporary art, not only for artists but also for curators and gallerists. Thanks to its central location and easy connections to other cities, the reasonable living costs, collectors with guts, and a broad and captivated audience. And, not to forget: a diverse scene in which galleries, museums, non-profits, and artist-run spaces open our eyes to beauty with tons of passion, critical perspectives, love of art, the urge to experiment, and the occasional glass of wine. This weekend, that scene is kick-starting the new season with the Brussels Gallery Weekend. The perfect occasion to dive into the colourful crowd and search for the very heart of buzzing Brussels: the gallerist.

THE WILD WEST “There is something both very aesthetic and very brutal about Brussels. And that is mirrored in the arts. This combination produces a very specific atmosphere, a dynamic perspective,” Frédéric Mariën tells us. For the past fifteen years, he has been running Galerie Greta Meert

with his mother. It is these little cracks in the fabric, the irregularities in the landscape, that prove to open up exceptional possibilities. It may be unintended, but they are there for the taking. “Historically, I think Brussels is a place where if you wanted to do it, you could just do it,” says Harlan Levey, who founded his gallery on Lepagestraat/rue Lepage in 2011 and is now based in Elsene/Ixelles. “I remember a performance day with Abner Preis at the gallery, when we were still downtown. We had a fire inside, a cocktail bar outside, and a barbecue on the street. I didn’t even think about asking a permit back then. We ended up blocking the street, and when the police came I thought I was in for it, but after a few minutes the officer was drinking vodka and enjoying the day with us. That Wild West side of Brussels is part of why things happen. There are a lot of margins and a lot of space to widen, close, or just live in them.” In 1988, when Galerie Greta Meert was founded under the name Galerie Meert Rihoux, “just doing it” simply meant picking up the telephone and making a call. Frédéric Mariën: “Those were different times. [Laughs]

Everything was much easier than it is now. When my mother was in New York and saw a good artist in an exhibition, she would look in the Art Diary, which listed all the artists with their telephone numbers, and she would simply call them from a public telephone. Very spontaneously, very naturally. My mother and I used to travel a lot. We would visit Agnes Martin at home, Richard Tuttle, and Donald Judd in Marfa, Texas – that was a life-changing meeting for me. He was so progressive, so pure, I thought of him as a man who understood everything. In terms of architecture, furniture, art, and urbanization. I remember sitting there in the heat, drinking tequila with him.” [Laughs] As a youngster I used to spend quite some time just listening to and observing all of those artists having long conversations. That gives you profound insight into life.” “At openings there would be about 20 or 30 people – usually all the same – and you would sell one or two works, and that was a success. Now, if there are fewer than 100 people at an opening, it is perceived as a failure. The pressure and the expectations have grown much bigger. The art world has become more

Founded? In 2011. What? A contemporary art gallery working with some of Brussels’s biggest talents and key international figures. Say that again? Driven by an unrelenting need to inject beauty into the world, this team pursues society, as flawed and painful a setting as it may be, to its very limits and presents it as a set of possibilities, connecting contemporary art to life, and people to each other. During the Brussels Gallery Weekend? TR Ericsson will be showing his “Industrial Poems” (6/9 > 3/11 – 6/9, 17.00: opening).

THE SQUATTY STUFF “You see people coming in and going out,” Harlan Levey continues. “They’re coming for the myth and they’re leaving because of the reality. And that reality remains what it has always been in Brussels: slow to change.” Though things can go like a rocket as well. In only a few years, Harlan Levey raised a gallery to maturity by investing his soul, body, and time in his artists and getting a lot back for it. “When we started out in 2011, we didn’t

represent artists. We did something with Modo Brussels, exhibitions for the UN and the European Commission, and we showed friends that I had worked with when I was the editor of Modart Magazine. We weren’t really presenting a programme, I was just trying to figure out how to transition to life after the magazine. We still had no idea what a gallery did or how to make a living from it, so we were getting by from writing jobs, teaching jobs, and sponsor exhibitions. It was only in 2013, with Marcin Dudek’s exhibition, that we really started to understand what a gallery is. He had been working in galleries and knew much more about them than we did. When he came to the gallery, he was like: ‘Okay, the spotlights you have in the gallery, they’re no good’, and then he rewired the lights and put in the neon tubes. We felt so professional… [Laughs] That building had no water half the time, it had no heating. To get warm in the winter, I would go outside and come back in. We would have no working toilet most of the time, and then every three or four months the place would flood. Really squatty stuff. What we have done in the last five years has been tremendous, and I feel the growth every year. Not just in my own practice, but also in the artists. This was a romantic idea, a reckless life decision, and now it is what seems to be – knock on wood – a very sustainable and long-term life project.”

THE BUBBLE This realization is of vital importance. Frédéric Mariën: “I think it is very important for young gallerists and artists to know what they are doing. Young gallerists show good artists, create impressive exhibitions, and are surrounded by hungry collectors, but that also implies a danger. Once they’ve seen the first bit of money, they want to go to all the big fairs, out of an urge to generate more visibility. But that takes a lot of effort and it can be very difficult, even for experienced gallerists.” “Things often also go too quickly for artists. There used to be many artists who taught or who worked in the construction industry. Nowadays, you decide to become an artist and you only want to concentrate on art, and that is dangerous. You easily become isolated in your own bubble.” SUPERDEALS, the project room and artist residency that Dominic Wood, Matthias Dornfeld, Filip Van Dingenen, and Tim Wouters founded in the summer of 2014, tries to burst that bubble. Dominic Wood: “When you first arrive here and you don’t know anybody in the city, you can very quickly find yourself at a dinner with a curator from Wiels or a dancer from one of the many dance companies. People are very accessible here. In other cities, things are far more hierarchical, and you don’t just have easy access. It is the informal nature of the scene, that is a central

aspect of Brussels’s growing reputation.” The short, one-month residences, aimed at today’s mobile artists, seek to accommodate this unique urban character. “We think of SUPERDEALS more as a network space, a way to meet people in Brussels, and less as a place where you lock yourself away and then open the doors on the last day of your residence to present the baby that you have birthed. But that’s tough, artists have a great need to produce.” SUPERDEALS is intended to provide space to breathe, a different perspective. “We organize one public presentation, which might be in a whole range of forms. It is not necessarily a classic exhibition. In fact, we prefer it not to be. We often say: ‘Do something out of the box. Do something else, a performance or something. Try to do something really experimental.’ A gallery can sometimes be very serious, and slow, and by contrast SUPERDEALS can be snappier. It is more fun.”

competitive, there is a bit too much of everyone at the moment: too many artists, too many gallerists, too many curators. Though the scene in Brussels continues to be very kind-hearted.” At the end of 2015, The New York Times published an article about Brussels: “Why Brussels is the new Berlin.” The furore around Brussels doesn’t seem to have stopped since, and the city is constantly battling to live up to the image that has been ascribed to it. Harlan Levey: “Recently someone wrote: ‘Brussels is the new Brussels’, and I thought: ‘Finally!’ I really don’t know if Brussels has evolved. I really struggle to answer that. In the first part of my life in Brussels, art for me was Recyclart, Cinéma Nova, the Vk*, Magasin 4, the Bunker, the tattoo shop at Saint-Géry…that was my Brussels art scene.” “That changed when I opened the project space. I’ve seen galleries and institutional projects come and go here. I’ve seen a lot of artists and curators come here, and many of them stay. I guess Kanal is a big step towards a bigger weight, Wiels has just continued to evolve and is an outstanding institution, and Art Brussels (and its attraction) has surely grown. But in terms of a scene, I don’t know if there has been an evolution. The numbers have become bigger, there is more. Internationally, talk is increasing. But if that’s evolution, I don’t know. Brussels reminds me of Cleveland in this respect. It’s always going to be great. ‘Next year, we’re going to be champs!’ I still am the underdog optimist Clevelander, it’s in my blood. And I think Brussels is a bit like that. Because of all this fraction and division, the evolution doesn’t quite happen like it could.”

THE BACK STORY All that energy converges at the Brussels Gallery Weekend. Frédéric Mariën: “It is a great way to start the season. People are in a good mood, and you see more traffic than you do in the rest of the year. In that sense it is really important.” “As a gallerist, what I want is for people to come here. We work hard to produce shows. On average about 500 people visit an exhibition, and that’s not a lot for the effort that goes in. We’d like more people to see what the artists are doing. And in September you get them to the gallery. At the end of the day, I believe that in terms of business, I could never be open to the public and grow my business and my artists just as well. But that’s not what we want. We want a public dialogue, we want to contribute to education and culture on a

Founded? In 1988. What? An established gallery celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Say that again? Greta Meert and her son Frédéric Mariën manage this gallery with great care, feeling, and passion. It is based in an impressive art nouveau building designed by the architect Louis Bral. Their preference for minimal and conceptual art results in exhibitions by absolute masters like Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and Sol Lewitt, but also by the Belgian hyper talent Pieter Vermeersch and Thomas Struth, who held his first international show here. broader scale. We want to touch a bigger people.” It is that story that also needs telling. Harlan Levey: “People often have the wrong ideas about galleries. If you’re working with young artists like we do, growing together, profit is a long way off. So you’re trying to survive. You could speculate and jump on what’s rising. But I don’t want to speculate, I want to deal with things that touch me deeply, because I have to be ready to fight for them every day. And I can’t do that because maybe it is going to bring back some money. If I wanted to play that game, I would have done something else with my life.” “I think this kind of misperception of how a lot of galleries today act and the role they play should be corrected. Our gallery is open to the general public five days a week, for free. And we get a lot of people who would never buy an artwork. We give beautiful free catalogues to contextualise, add more input, and educate. And then we take risks to support artists that we believe are saying things that are valuable and that need to be heard and to help them grow. From an idea to the production of something to the legacy of that thing.”

THE TRIGGER “That’s what I love about the Brussels Gallery Weekend too: it’s a leadership role,” Harlan Levey continues. “Why do we spend that

money to make this big event? Is it to make more money in our business? Well, I wish that I saw that correlation. What I can say is that we spend the money, and it’s a great energy and there are people that visit the gallery more than in the rest of the year. That’s what we do it for and we hope that translates into deeper relationships that support the artist and the business. But it’s not the first thing. The first thing is the buzz in the city. If you check international news: what has Brussels made headlines for over the last five years? Terrorism, political incompetence and corruption, and contemporary art. The galleries in Brussels do their job and I think we should be credited for that, and that the event should receive more support from the state, which doesn’t support us because they think of us as commercial entities rather than cultural producers. That is a missed opportunity.” Frédéric Mariën agrees completely: “There are

some artists that you know would completely change your financing if you could get them in. But that is not our goal. You have to stay yourself, that is very important. Even if it means organizing exhibitions with work that is near unsellable. That is the game. You build a relationship with an artist, based on their work, their past, but also based on their personality. In that sense the job of a gallerist is also very exciting. In conversations, you can make suggestions, stimulate something, a new direction or a different perspective. Then you have to respect that trust and follow the artists on their journeys, even when it is difficult. It is a friendship, it has to click. The gallerist actually has to become fascinated by an artist. By their art and by their being. It is that passion that you share and that you promote. Like with Donald Judd. An artwork has to continue to trigger you, even in its simplest and purest form.”

Bill Withers doet er al zo lang het zwijgen toe dat mensen hem bellen om te vragen of hij nog leeft. Gelukkig is er jazzkameleon José James, die na hommages aan John Coltrane en Billie Holiday in de stembanden van het zwijgende soulwonder kruipt. — TOM ZONDERMAN

keer: zo vaak herhaalt Bill Withers “I know” in ‘Ain’t no sunshine’. Dat weten we natuurlijk omdat we die woorden al vaker hebben meegekweeld dan de “nanana’s” van ‘Hey Jude’, maar we hebben toch even gespiekt op het internet. Zodat u zeker weet wat u moet antwoorden bij die volgende quiz. ‘Ain’t no sunshine’ is een absolute popklassieker, maar wel geen evidente. Het was de B-kant van ‘Harlem’, de single die Withers in 1971 op de kaart moest zetten – hij had het in 1967 wel al eens vruchteloos geprobeerd met ‘Three nights and a morning’. ‘Ain’t no sunshine’ is 2 minuten en 3 seconden puur goud, maar doet het zonder refrein. Eenvoud is de crux van Withers’ liedjes. Een simpele melodie, directe lyrics en die tegelijk zachte en rauwe stem geven zijn mix van soul, blues en folk wijsheid én emotionele diepgang. Dat kon Withers omdat hij als jonge dertiger op dat moment al veel had geleefd. ‘Ain’t no sunshine’ schreef hij nadat hij ontroerd raakte door Days of wine and roses, een donker drama van Blake Edwards waarin alcohol het huwelijk tussen Jack Lemon en Lee Remick kapotmaakt. Natuurlijk kent u ‘Ain’t no sunshine’ ook van de jonge Michael Jackson, die er in 1971 als veertienjarige knul zijn solocarrière mee lanceerde. Rahsaan Roland Kirk maakte er een kosmische ‘gefluitzongen’ versie van en ook Scott Walker liet het liedje door zijn stembanden waaien, net als 226 andere artiesten. Vergeet wel dat het nummer in 2013 nog een keer door de metalband Black Label Society werd verkracht. Vergaap u liever aan de versie van José James, die er deze week in de AB zijn leven en ziel in zal leggen. De Amerikaanse jazzzanger stopte het nummer al eerder in zijn livesets, en heeft nu een hele plaat met werk van Bill Withers opgenomen. Lean on me: José James celebrates Bill Withers verschijnt eind deze maand bij Blue Note. Het is bijzonder sympathiek van James dat hij Withers’ donkerbruine stemtimbre nieuw leven in wil blazen. Withers weigert namelijk halsstarrig om dat zelf nog te doen. Al sinds 1985. Voor dat vervroegde pensioen koos hij

zelf, teleurgesteld door de muziekindustrie. Zijn eerste label, het kleine Sussex, ging onverwacht op de fles, daarna werd hij speelbal van major Columbia. “Blaxperts” noemde hij zijn platenbazen, bleekscheten die dachten dat ze beter dan hem wisten welke liedjes hij moest zingen en schrijven. In de jaren 1970 scoorde Withers grote hits met ‘Lean on me’, ‘Use me’, ‘Lovely day’ en ‘Just the two of us’, verzamelde Grammy’s en gouden platen, maar die adelbrieven volstonden blijkbaar niet. Moe van het eindeloze gebakkelei met platenbonzen probeerde Withers medio jaren 1980 dan toch de popster te zijn die ze in hem zagen met het album Watching you watching me. Maar toen de bazen liedjes vertolkt door

Sindsdien weigert Withers elke schreeuw om een comeback, hoe luid er ook wordt geroepen. Hij schonk wel nieuwe nummers aan Jimmy Buffett en George Benson, en Blackstreet recycleerde ‘Grandma’s hands’ voor hun wereldhit ‘No diggity’. In 2015 kreeg Stevie Wonder de eer om Withers in te leiden in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Wonder en John Legend zongen enkele van Withers’ hits, hij kwam erbij staan, maar zong amper een woord. Koppige kerel. Bill Withers werd deze zomer 80. Dat is oud voor iemand die in de jaren 1970 doorbrak. Toen hij in 1971 debuteerde met het album

Just as I am, was hij al 32. Op de hoes van die plaat zie je hem tegen een bakstenen muur leunen, in zijn rechterhand houdt hij zo’n typisch Amerikaanse lunchbox: dat is de Weber Aircraft-fabriek in Burbank, Californië, waar hij toiletpotten voor Boeing 747’s in elkaar schroefde. De foto werd ook écht tijdens zijn lunchpauze genomen. Withers had er dan al negen jaar bij het Amerikaanse leger op zitten én een korte baan als melkboer. Tussen zijn shifts bij Weber door, schreef Withers songs op een akoestische gitaar die hij had gekocht nadat hij soulzanger Lou Rawls er vrouwen had mee zien verleiden. Een van zijn demo’s kwam bij Clarence Avant van het Sussex-label terecht, dat net daarvoor nog Sixto ‘Sugar Man’ Rodríguez had getekend. Avant liet Withers songs opnemen met Stax-huisband Booker T. & the MG’s, Stephen Stills nam de plaats van Steve Cropper in.

BLACK BOSS Zelfs nadat hij zichzelf naar de top van de charts had gekatapulteerd met ‘Ain’t no sunshine’, wilde Withers zijn job niet opgeven. Het bedrijf nam de beslissing dan maar voor hem: een paar maanden na de release van zijn

debuut, werd hij de laan uitgestuurd. Geen probleem, want Withers mocht al snel op de koffie bij tv-icoon Johnny Carson, vulde Carnegie Hall en schoof aan bij Muhammad Ali en Don King voor Rumble in the Jungle. Het stotterende jongetje dat opgroeide in het onbeduidende mijnwerkersstadje Slab Fork in West Virginia was plots een superster geworden. Op het podium en tijdens interviews sprak Withers wijs en gevat, citeerde schrijvers-denkers als Thoreau, maar bleef een man van het volk, die met eenvoudige penseelstreken universele gevoelens kon verklanken. “He’s the last African-American Everyman,” zei The Roots-drummer en grote fan Questlove over hem in het muziekblad Rolling Stone bij zijn toetreden tot de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Bill Withers is the closest thing black people have to a Bruce Springsteen.” Luister naar het sociaalbewuste, hoopvolle ‘Lean on me’ en je weet wat Questlove bedoelt. Withers was woke lang voor dat een hashtag werd. “What better way to bring positivity to the world

while challenging the racist, fascist and sexist status quo?” zegt José James dan ook over de reden waarom hij Withers een bloemlezing geeft. Withers gaf hem vorig jaar persoonlijk zijn zegen tijdens een etentje in LA. “Bill is een genie,” zei James over die ontmoeting. “Ik heb in dat uur meer van hem geleerd dan van tien jaar op de planken te staan.” Dat waren nochtans geen tien onfortuinlijke jaren. José James debuteerde in 2008 bijzonder knap met The dreamer, waarop hij romantische jazzballads in de stijl van Johnny Hartman en John Coltrane een urban cool gaf. Daarna vertimmerde hij met Flying Lotus r&b en zocht futuristische elektronica op. Op zijn recentste albums verloor hij dan weer wat persoonlijkheid door zich te willen meten met eigentijdse pop.

VIAGRA Liever hoorden we hem zingen begeleid door Jef Neve, of in Facing East, zijn eerbetoon aan zijn “muzikale vader” John Coltrane, en Yesterday I had the blues, zijn hommage aan zijn “muzikale moeder” Billie Holiday. “Als ik nog een tribute doe, ga ik voor Marvin Gaye,” vertelde James ons zes jaar geleden. Maar het werd dus Withers, met wiens songs James live al extatische reacties had losgeweekt. James’ donkere stem is een perfecte match met het werk van Withers. Anders dan wat James Blake, Bon Iver of alt-J recent deden met diens songs, houdt James zijn interpretatie sober. Zal José James Bill Withers uit zijn winterslaap halen? “Ze zullen een viagra-achtige pil op de markt moeten brengen die mensen van mijn leeftijd weer de zin geeft om de aandacht te trekken,” liet Withers zich ontvallen bij de zoveelste vraag wanneer hij zou terugkeren naar de spotlights. “Vanwaar ik kom, zitten mensen zoals ik de hele dag op hun porch.” Tot die tijd blijft James, die zich een afro en een seventieslook aanmat, het perfecte surrogaat. Rest nog de vraag welke versie hij van ‘Ain't no sunshine’ zal zingen. De originele, of die remix van 1989 waarin Withers de woorden “I know” 113 keer herhaalt. Ons telraampje ligt klaar.

Waarom roze het nieuwe zwart is Sinds Janelle Monáe YouTube in vuur en vlam zette met haar vaginabroek, kijken we met andere ogen naar roze bloemblaadjes. — TOM ZONDERMAN “Pynk, like the inside of your... baby / Pynk behind all of the doors... crazy / Pynk, like the tongue that goes down... maybe / Pynk, like the paradise found”: Janelle Monáe wond er geen doekjes om toen ze begin dit jaar haar derde album Dirty computer uitbracht. ‘Pynk’, haar lofzang op de vagina, behoort samen met ‘This is America’ van Childish Gambino en ‘Ape shit’ van Jay-Z en Beyoncé tot de drukst besproken songs van 2018. Met dank ook aan de bijbehorende videoclips die viraal gingen. Terwijl die van de Gambino en het koningskoppel van de rap #woke schreeuwden, zette Monáe vrouwen en hun anatomie vrolijk én smaakvol in de bloemetjes. Grootste aandachtstrekker: de vaginabroek die de Nederlandse designer Duran Lantink voor haar ontwierp, met labia die eruitzien als bloemblaadjes. En slipjes die “I grab back” kirden. Hadden we al gezegd dat #metoo en #blacklivesmatter de popmuziek hebben hertekend?

FREE YOUR ASS De 32-jarige Amerikaanse r&b-zangeres had tot nu vooral de aandacht opgeëist met haar eigenzinnige, futuristische mix van r&b, funk en jazz waarin ze zichzelf projecteerde als androïde en de Afro-Amerikaanse cultuur bezong. Vandaag heeft ze de moeilijke laagjes van haar hybride afgepeld, waardoor ze de spotlights vol op haar boodschap kan laten schijnen: girlpower. “See, if everything is sex / Except sex, which is power

/ You know power is just sex / You screw me and I’ll screw you too,” schepte ze op in ‘Screwed’. Die seks speelt Monáe slim uit. Of ze nu hetero, lesbisch of bi is, laat ze in het midden. Heel eigentijds ziet ze zichzelf als panseksueel of genderfluïde: een “free-ass motherfucker”, zoals ze zich eerder dit jaar omschreef in het Amerikaanse muziekblad Rolling Stone. En ze staat niet alleen: kijk naar de Amerikaanse actrice Ruby Rose, bekend van de Amerikaanse Netflix-serie Orange is the new black. Monáe was er pas nog als de kippen bij om haar/hem te feliciteren voor haar/zijn rol als Batwoman. “It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender / An emotional sexual bender,” verwoordt de zangeres het zelf in het Princeheerlijke ‘Make me feel’. Dat is de crux: Monáe vereenzelvigt zich met ‘de andere’, of je nu afwijkt van de seksuele ‘norm’, een immigrant bent of een andere huidskleur hebt. Lantinks kledingstuk werd intussen zo gekoesterd dat Monáe beloofde een exemplaar op de markt te brengen. Gehuld in roze zien we ons in Brussel de lyrics van ‘Django Jane’ meelippen: “Nigga, move back, take a seat, you were not involved / And hit the mute button, let the vagina have a monologue.” Staatssecretarissen spitsen maar beter de oren.

« Quand on peint, on a toujours vingt ans », dixit le magicien des couleurs Bernard Villers qui arpente son atelier d’un bout à l’autre avec une fougue contagieuse.

errière l’épais sourcil blanc et broussailleux, l’œil pétille. On peut y déceler une pointe d’immaturité rieuse, celle-là même qui garantit d’échapper à l’esprit de sérieux. Sur le mur blanc de l’atelier de Bernard Villers, une affiche annonce la couleur: « Quand on peint, on a toujours vingt ans ». « C’est un titre que j’ai trouvé il y a quelques années pour une exposition aux Pays-Bas », se rappelle cet artiste de 78 ans au verbe doux. Dans son antre de Saint-Josse, à quelques encâblures du Botanique, l’homme a du mal à rester en place. Prompt à se lever, il fait des allers et retours incessants dans la vaste pièce blanche et lumineuse, ouverte sur le jardin, où il s’installe chaque jour pour relancer son œuvre. Cherchant mais ne trouvant pas toujours, remuant des paquets de boîtes ou fouillant dans son stock, il fait penser à ces enfants pressés de déballer leurs jouets devant l’inconnu qui a franchi le seuil de leur chambre. Pour eux, montrer ce qu’ils possèdent s’apparente à dire qui ils sont. Il en va de même pour ce plasticien majeur « parmi les plus appréciés et connus en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles », si l’on s’en tient à la description officielle de l’ouvrage Voyons Voir que publieront sous peu les

éditions de La Lettre Volée: chaque pièce qu’il exhume révèle un pan, une strate d’une carrière de près de soixante ans. Cet itinéraire n’est pas linéaire, Bernard Villers le fait comprendre très rapidement. « J’ai commencé dans l’esprit de Willem de Kooning, je faisais des toiles très travaillées, soignées… c’était ma période ‘peinture-peinture’, proche de l’artisanat », commente l’intéressé.

LE SUJET PEINTURE Dans les années septante, il opère un tournant majeur, se libère du « bien peint » et se met à réfléchir à la matérialité de sa pratique, « la peinture elle-même devait devenir le sujet de ma peinture ». Dans la foulée, il tourne le dos aux châssis, soucieux de montrer le verso autant que le recto. Autre orientation, autre figure tutélaire, désormais il se place sous la houlette de Piet Mondriaan. « Je suis aussi un enfant de Dada », renchérit celui qui a eu Jo Delahaut comme professeur, avant qu’il ne devienne un « client » intéressé par sa production de sérigraphies. Une autre ombre plane sur le travail de Bernard Villers, celle de Kurt Schwitters. Tout comme le natif d’Hanovre, le Bruxellois s’est forgé une grammaire propre, fondée sur la récupération d’objets disparates

– des cagettes, des dossiers de chaise, des palettes de transport… - qu’il se plaît à agencer de façon harmonieuse. Il pointe également sa fascination pour le monde ouvrier. « N’ayant jamais pu vivre de ma peinture, j’ai fait pas mal de chantiers. Les matériaux sont une grande source d’inspiration pour moi. Le travail manuel me passionne. » Le plasticien n’aurait pas fait cette confession, qu’on l’aurait déduite sans peine. Dans son atelier, foreuses, limes et autres scies jouxtent les papiers et pigments de couleurs. Il y a aussi l’importance du pli que l’on détecte au fil de son travail, un geste que le peintre rapproche « du coup de cutter dans un bloc de gyproc ». L’œuvre de Bernard Villers réussit un grand écart aussi intéressant que personnel. Si d’un côté, il évolue sur le terrain de la ligne froide, du monochrome et de la géométrie rigoureuse, il arpente tout aussi bien des univers plus

flous, plus accidentels et hasardeux. En résultant des télescopages inédits, des « déterritorialisations », comme aurait écrit Deleuze, aux accents audacieux.

LE PEINTRE ÉDITEUR De cela témoigne son intense activité d’éditeur qu’il a initiée dès 1976 en créant les Éditions du Remorqueur. « Dans la foulée de mai 68, j’ai voulu ne plus m’adresser à un petit cénacle mais, très vite, j’en ai fait quelque chose de personnel, une manière de mettre la peinture en mouvement, de la confronter avec ce qui ne lui appartient pas. » Bernard Villers va alors puiser son inspiration dans la littérature, cet autre de la peinture. Il s’inspire de Raymond Queneau ou des auteurs de polars comme David Goodis, l’auteur du roman qui servira de scénario à Tirez sur le pianiste de François Truffaut. « Je vais vous montrer un petit Perec que j’ai

fait », lance Villers comme pour joindre le geste à la parole. D’une boîte, il sort un petit ouvrage précieux. Le thème en est La Disparition, l’ouvrage de Georges Perec qui tout au long des 300 pages qui le constituent fait l’économie de la lettre « e ». D’une main ferme, « l’éditeur qui n’édite que lui-même » tourne les pages une à une. La magie opère, le « e » du début fond progressivement dans les calques et la couleur pour faire place à un « a ». « Je n’illustre jamais un ouvrage, ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de travailler

sur la matière du texte, de reproduire plastiquement ce que la lecture déclenche en moi. » Si la personnalité de Bernard Villers évoque un geyser créatif intarissable, on y chercherait en vain une quelconque forme d’arrogance. Pour preuve, au moment de partir, il exhibe fièrement une dernière œuvre. Il s’agit d’une feuille verte dont un pan a été grignoté. « Je l’ai soumise au travail des escargots de mon jardin », livre-t-il en guise d’explication à ce ready-made aussi trivial que résolument poétique.

In Amsterdam naar de Basic-Fit gaan is ongeveer even bijzonder als een hamburger bestellen bij de McDonalds in Duitsland, of kleren kopen bij de H&M in Italië dat klinkt goed. Op een groot scherm staat een man op een dakterras: mijn virtuele leerkracht. Ik ben alleen in de zaal, de man spreekt me vriendelijk toe in zijn Frans met Spaanse tongval. Neerwaartse hond, opwaartse hond, een paar keer planken. Dit is zo slecht nog niet. Ik voel al hoe ik leniger en sterker word. Het mooie aan mijn abonnement op de

Basic-Fit is dat ik het ook in Nederland kan gebruiken. Als ik in Amsterdam ben, hoef ik mijn wekelijkse ritueel dus niet te onderbreken. Ook daar zoek ik een lesje urban yoga op. Het dakterras met de kantoorgebouwen op de achtergrond, dat ik in gedachten in de Brusselse Noordwijk had geplaatst, blijkt bij de noorderburen ook te bestaan. Mijn virtuele leerkracht is een Vlaming die veel Engelse woorden gebruikt. We “flowen” samen van de ene naar de volgende houding, en ik begin de volgorde van de oefeningen al te herkennen. Plotseling weet ik niet meer of het wel zo geweldig is om zowel in Nederland als in België toegang te hebben tot dezelfde diensten. Although the Berlin Film Festival has lost some of its charisma over the past few years, it is still one of the leading European festivals. The Goethe-Institut is presenting seven films from the Forum of the Berlinale at Bozar. — NIELS RUËLL

he Forum is a section of the Berlinale that is famous for showcasing new trends and supporting films by directors who dare to be innovative. Seven films from this year’s selection are now being screened at Bozar, and there is very little chance that any of these films will be picked up for distribution in regular cinemas afterwards. In other words, be there if you don’t want to miss them. Five of the seven directors are honouring Brussels with their presence. In the film Casting, Nicolas Wackerbarth has a filmmaker go in search of the perfect cast for a remake of Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant, one of the many classic films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. In the documentary Aggregat, Marie Wilke explores how political opinions are formed in Germany in the recent past. But Waldheims Walzer by Ruth Beckermann, which won the award for best documentary in Berlin, looks even more interesting. The director stood in the crowd that chanted “Waldheim nein! Waldheim nein!” in 1986, to prevent Kurt Waldheim from becoming president of Austria. The former Secretary-General of the UN had become internationally contested due to lies he had told about his past in the German Wehrmacht. The Austrians had ignored the outrage and voted for Waldheim anyway. Beckermann analyses the furious debates of the time and uses both footage from television archives and material that she herself recorded at the time but later lost sight of. She hopes that

her documentary will shed light on the methods of masters of “alternative facts” like Donald Trump and Sebastian Kurz, the current chancellor of Austria. The most famous name coming to Bozar must be Claire Simon. The French director likes to blend fiction and documentary and was widely applauded ten years ago for her Les bureaux de Dieu. In Premières solitudes, she follows adolescents at a school in one of the suburbs of Paris and captures their eloquent conversations about their families, their relationships with their parents, their first loves, and their ideas about the future.

Au Brésil, une famille de quatre enfants et deux autres membres de la famille fuyant la violence domestique peinent à garder la tête hors de l’eau. Le père a deux mains gauches et une librairie qui ne rapporte pas. Le fils aîné est sur le point de quitter le cocon familial pour rejoindre une équipe de handball en Allemagne. Leur nouvelle maison se fait péniblement attendre. Dans l’ancienne, une échelle et une vitre remplacent la porte d’entrée défectueuse. La nature des problèmes et les changements à venir n’ont pas tellement d’importance. Le réalisateur Gustavo Pizzi cherche avant tout à souligner le courage et la sagesse de vie dont fait preuve la mère de famille dans une bataille de tous les jours parfois chaotique. Pizzi se démène pour toucher le cœur du spectateur et se montre assez paternaliste dans sa manière de lui indiquer ce qu’il est censé penser et ressentir. Mais Karine Teles sauve les meubles avec une interprétation extraordinaire. Elle exprime des émotions contradictoires et complexes qui ne vous laissent pas indifférent. (NR)

“And IIII will always love youuuu.” Zelfs Saddam Hoessein kweelde de wereldhit mee die Whitney Houston overhield aan de film The bodyguard. Wie ze met “youuuu” bedoelde, is enigszins onduidelijk. Tegenspeler Kevin Costner? Haar toekomstige dochter? Haar ontrouwe en stoute wederhelft Bobby Brown? De kans dat ze zichzelf bedoelde, is verwaarloosbaar klein. Toch als we deze documentaire kunnen vertrouwen en zo ziet het er wel naar uit. Regisseur Kevin Macdonald verdiende zijn sporen met One day in September en Touching the void en kreeg alle betrokkenen voor de camera, met uitzondering van één kroongetuige. Hij legt het accent niet op haar muziek en de opeenstapeling van hits die Whitney Houston een kleine dertig jaar geleden scoorde, maar op haar levensverhaal. Dat was erg tragisch, met dank aan een familie die haar uitzoog en misbruikte en een echtgenoot die haar drank- en drugsverslaving nog verergerde. Amper 48 was Whitney Houston toen ze in 2012 stierf aan een overdosis. Mogelijk duwt de documentaire haar iets te onbezonnen in de slachtofferrol, maar ze is vakkundig, onderbouwd en boeiend, en duidt de demonen en de context die het fenomeen van de aardbol verjoegen. Le documentaire, qui verse peut-être un peu trop dans la victimisation facile, n’en est pas moins solide et intéressant.

A lower-middle class family in Brazil struggles to keep its head above water. The nature of their problems doesn’t really matter. Director Gustavo Pizzi primarily aims to highlight the courage and life wisdom with which the mother engages in the sometimes chaotic daily struggle. Pizzi is rather paternalistic in the way he instructs his viewers what to think and feel. But Karine Teles saves the day with her extraordinary performance. She expresses conflicting and complex emotions that do not leave you indifferent.

artin Scorsese noemt Kenji Mizoguchi een van de grootste meesters ooit en schat hem even hoog in als Jean Renoir, John Ford en Friedrich Murnau. Hij is geboren in de negentiende eeuw, maar wie zijn films kent, gelooft dat nooit. Zijn werk is zowel wat de vorm als wat de inhoud betreft van een moderniteit die je niet mag verwachten van iemand die leefde van 1898 tot 1956. We hebben het dan vooral over zijn latere werk. Van de 83 films die hij heeft geregisseerd, zijn er slechts 31 min of meer intact bewaard gebleven. Van de ruim veertig stomme films is er

slechts één overgeleverd: Song of home uit 1925. Mizoguchi was van vele markten thuis. Het historische epos Tales of the Taira clan (1955) beeldt een machtsstrijd uit tussen monniken en samoerai. Zonder kennis van het Japan van de twaalfde eeuw (en dat van de jaren 1950) loop je enigszins

verloren in het verhaal, maar dat is geen ramp want het esthetische genot ligt hoog. The story of the last chrysanthemums (1939) is volgens Cinematek een aangrijpend melodrama. Het magistrale Ugetsu monogatari (1953), de favoriete Mizoguchi van Scorsese, is een spookverhaal met de ene adembenemen-

de scène na de andere. Zoals alle grote regisseurs ontwikkelde Kenji Mizoguchi een eigen, herkenbare stijl. Kenmerkend zijn het beperkte aantal cuts, de sequentieopnamen, oogstrelend camerawerk en uitmuntende vertolkingen. Filmregisseurs als Jacques Rivette en Jean-Luc Godard wezen op de wonderen die hij verrichtte met een uitgelezen mise-en-scène. Over zijn perfectionisme doen enkele mooie verhalen de ronde. Dit stilistische meesterschap, een modernisme avant Antonioni, maakt hem heel toegankelijk voor de cinefielen van vandaag. Maar ook inhoudelijk verbazen zijn films nog steeds. Kenji Mizoguchi heeft het zijn brute vader nooit vergeven dat hij zijn zus als geisha verkocht en maakte van de ondergeschikte positie van de vrouw en de noblesse waarmee ze afziet in een vrouwonvriendelijke wereld het speerpunt van zijn oeuvre. Straat der schande is het onsentimentele portret van alleenstaande vrouwen die doen wat moet om te overleven in een gore buurt van Tokio. In De zusters van Gion reageren twee zussen heel verschillend op hun bestaan in de geishawijk van Kyoto en op de haat en het misprijzen van de mannen.

vec son ambition nourricière et ses contours démocratiques, le bistro est à nos yeux le genre le plus crucial de la restauration. Hélas, il faut avouer qu’il s’est un peu perdu en cours de route. L’époque en a étouffé la spontanéité sous cette formule hybride qui a fait florès: la bistronomie. Attention, pas question de renier cette dernière, elle nous a offert de bons moments. Seul hic, sa tendance à en faire des tonnes, son oubli d’une nourriture simple et directe. Bonne nouvelle, un bistro digne de ce nom a ouvert ses portes avant les vacances. Le nom de l’établissement évoque à lui seul ces cantines, telles qu’on les trouve du côté de Lyon, où si vous dites que vous êtes au régime… on vous indique la porte de sortie. Avec Sylvie en salle et Tom en cuisine, un couple originaire de Mouscron qui s’est aussi fait remarquer en Bretagne, Les Petits Bouchons se découvre comme une adresse de caractère. Le décor? Garanti pur jus: miroirs biseautés, carrelage d’époque, luminaires Art Nouveau, chaises bistro et joli comptoir où poser le coude. La forme épouse donc parfaitement le fond. Côté carte, c’est un véritable régal pour l’amateur, d’autant plus que les entrées s’affichent sous 15€ et la grande majorité des plats sous 20€. Hareng super gourmand de la maison David (13,50€) servis avec des pommes à l’huile, os à moelle rôti au thym (12,50€) mais surtout remarquable, à nos yeux la seule du genre dans la capitale, andouillette beaujolaise de fraise de veau (18,50€). Un rêve bistrotier.

Impossible de s’en tenir là, on veut explorer la carte au maximum. Ainsi du Saint-Nectaire affiné par Julien Hazard servi avec ses petits compagnons odorants (8€ la sélection) ou, pour le même prix, le trop bon riz au lait maison. On pointe aussi un choix exemplaire de bières d’artisans - saison Cazeau au sureau (5€) en direct de la pompe, XX Bitter (4€), Brasserie de la Senne (de 4,50 à 5,50€)…- et vins d’auteurs au verre façon Clos du Tue Bœuf (5,50€) ou Fleurie de Marcel Joubert (6,50€) et à la bouteille (Chardonnay 16 de Thomas Pico à 39€).

Het interieur bestaat uit spiegels met geslepen randen, een antieke tegelvloer, art-nouveauverlichting, bistrostoelen en een mooie toog en is perfect afgestemd op wat de kaart te bieden heeft. Keurig geprijsd – voorgerechten blijven onder de 15 euro en de meeste hoofdgerechten onder de 20 euro – krijg je bijvoorbeeld een uniek worstje van fraise de veau (darmscheil) voorgezet (€18,50). Het Frans-Duitse paar begon de cocktailbar Life Is Beautiful in de lente van 2016 in de Dansaertstraat. De gezellige, dichtbegroeide bar heeft er nu een broertje bij, verderop in dezelfde straat. De Life Is Beautiful Boutique is een winkel voor cocktailliefhebbers die voeling hebben met vetplanten en andere tropische bladerdekken. Je vindt er kwaliteitsrum (vanaf €30), whiskeys en tig soorten gin, mescal en bourbon. The menu is a real treat for food lovers, especially with starters for under €15 and main courses for under €20. Sumptuous herring (€13.50) served with potato salad, roast marrowbone with thyme (€12.50), and most remarkably, veal ruffle andouillette beaujolaise (€18.50), to our knowledge the only one of its kind in the capital. To follow, mature Saint-Nectaire served with little aromatic accompaniments (€8) or the excellent house rice pudding (€8). Vind je niet meteen wat je zoekt? “We staan open voor suggesties en gaan graag op zoek naar wat de klant wil,” verzekert Karoline. “In de twee jaar dat we open zijn, is de nieuwsgierigheid van onze klanten enkel gegroeid,” zegt ze met een glimlach terwijl ze hen begroet alsof het vrienden waren. Tister Ikomo est un danseur et percussionniste kinois reconnu pour sa connaissance de la tradition, sans peur de s’aventurer dans le contemporain, comme lors du spectacle Coup Fatal d’Alain Platel et Fabrizio Cassol (Ballet C de la B). Mais la danse ne va jamais sans musique, et la percussion jamais sans danse dans son Congo natal, où Tister a appris la tradition en famille. Ces deux aspects de l’artiste seront mis en valeur au festival Maïsha, où il se présentera avec Tano (« la grâce » en kikongo), un groupe formé début 2018. Leur musique festive à grande influence congolaise part à la recherche d’autres influences musicales du monde. (BT) FR

Vorig jaar zong de Belgisch-Zuid-Afrikaanse jazzzangeres Tutu Puoane zichzelf in de picture met The Joni Mitchell Project, haar hommage aan het Canadese folk- en jazzicoon. Eerder had ze al hulde gebracht aan Billie Holiday, David Bowie en Miriam Makeba, begin dit jaar balde ze de vuist vijftig jaar na de moord op Martin Luther King samen met het Brussels Jazz Orchestra en werk van Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway en Stevie Wonder. Veel stijlen en invloeden, die de Belgische Nina Simone nu bij elkaar gooit in haar Tutu Puoane Quartet, daarin bijgestaan door onder meer klasbakken als Ewout Pierreux op piano en Dré Pallemaerts op drums. Singer Shannon Shaw attracts all the attention, a powerhouse with a lung capacity that could challenge Etta James. Retro lover Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys fell for their sound recently and infused their album Onion with his contemporary vintage sound. He went on to record Shaw’s solo debut, In Nashville, an album that exudes the spirits of Dusty Springfield and Roy Orbison. Big shoes to fill, but that’s no feat for Shaw. (TZ) EN

Toen Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar en Stéphane Aubier in 2012 de magische kinderboekenreeks Ernest & Célestine in een fijnzinnige animatiefilm goten, kreeg het werk van de Brusselse Gabrielle Vincent (1929-2000) – bij de burgerlijke stand bekend als Monique Martin – ook wat van de warme gloed over zich heen. Het Kunstcentrum van het Rood-Klooster plaatst dat originele werk nu centraal in een tentoonstelling. Die put behalve uit de tekeningen van de onwaarschijnlijke vriendschap tussen de beer en de muis, ook uit haar schetsen van de door haar bewonderde Jacques Brel. (KS) NL

Marthe Wéry s’est immergée dans la couleur comme dans une ascèse. Mais c’est aussi une aventure pleine de surprises pour qui s’y laisse plonger. Aspirée par le plein plutôt que par le vide, elle a joué avec les textures et la matière avec sensualité, son cerveau au bout des doigts, comme elle disait. Par son travail subtil de superposition de couches, elle structure son œuvre et tend un miroir à la lumière et à l’espace environnant. With Valentina and his other heroines, the Italian comic book artist Guido Crepax combined the sexual revolution of the Sixties with a revolution in the graphic novel. Trained as an architect, he constructed his panels like labyrinths, skilfully composing them with elegant black lines. The sophisticated eroticism of his fantasy world is conveyed through stunning cut-outs depicting the dreamlike indiscretions of his pseudo-ingénue character. In addition to the Italian master’s panels, the gallery presents ten images created by contemporaries like Éric Lambé, Jacques de Loustal, and Antonio Lapone in homage to the young woman with the fringe.
