Kunstenaar en schrijver Jan Vanriet (70) publiceerde zopas Radeloos geluk, een caleidoscopisch zelfportret waarin hij terugblikt op de afgelopen zeventig jaar: van zijn eerste levensjaren die ook oorlogsjaren waren, over de turbulente jaren 1960, ’70 en ’80, via zijn vele reizen tot zijn ontmoetingen en vriendschappen met allerlei kleurrijke figuren, en dan vooral zijn speciale band met Hugo Claus. Tijdens een literaire middag praat hij honderduit over leven en werk, en ook over die vriendschap met Claus. Met Muy complicado gaat een heterogeen theatergezelschap uit de stal van ARSENAAL/ LAZARUS aan de zwier met herkenbare elementen uit het oeuvre van cineast Pedro Almodóvar. Dan hebben we het over felle kleuren, contrasterende belichting, luide stemmen, grote vrouwen, kleine hartjes, felle emoties, extravagante kostuums, een gebrek aan gêne, een teveel aan hunkering, lak aan de goegemeente, behoefte aan erkenning en een soundtrack die van Oscar and the Wolf naar Whitney Houston schakelt. Op de scène staan Laurence Roothooft (Marsman), Els Olaerts (Witse), Steven Beersmans en Randi De Vlieghe (allebei ook Studio Orka). Samen met scenograaf Michiel Van Cauwelaert en costumière Maartje van Bourgogne wervelen ze door een associatieve filmische revue met transformaties, imitaties, drag-acts en playbacksessies. (MB)

De expo Star Wars identities haalt de galaxy far, far away even naar Brussel.

En dus ook de oorwarmers van Leia en de dotjes van Rey. BRUZZ ging op intergalactische expeditie met de handen in het haar. — HELEEN RODIERS

e Zweedse buns van badass Prinses Leia doen in de allereerste Star Wars-film uit 1977 de saaie coupes van haar mannelijke rebellenvrienden Han Solo en Luke Skywalker nog verbleken. Maar dat foutje wordt eind jaren 1990 met de reboot van de Star Wars-franchise meteen rechtgezet.

Jedi-master Qui-Gon Jinn krijgt een wuivende haardos aangemeten. Zijn leerling Obi-Wan Kenobi moet het stellen met een lachwekkende variant op het nektapijt. Kortgeknipt haar, een nekmatje vastgebonden in een miniscuul staartje en een lange vlecht sieren het hoofd van de Padawan.

Door die reboot weten we ook waar de uit de kluiten gewassen dotten van

Prinses Leia vandaan komen. Mama, Queen Amidala, loopt er ook graag mee rond. Als ze niet in ceremoniële klederdracht moet verschijnen tenminste. Bij die feestkledij hoort ook heel wat extra haar en tooi. De prequel­ trilogie (1999-2005) speelt zich af voor de oorspronkelijke trilogie (1977-1983) van twee decennia eerder. De reden? Iets met digitale effecten die George Lucas, het brein achter Star Wars, pas dan in staat stellen om de wereld te creëren die hij voor ogen heeft. Volgt u nog?

Star Wars identities, de tentoonstelling in Brussels Expo, gaat er prat op haar bezoekers alle achtergrondinformatie te bezorgen die nodig is. Ideaal om je kennis bij te spijke-

ren. Met props, schaalmodellen, kostuums en zelfs een app ontwart de expo het kluwen aan personages, generaties en zijverhalen. Centraal staat het dramatische epos van Luke en Anakin Skywalker, het meest bekende vader-zoonduo uit de filmgeschiedenis. In Star Wars: Episode I – The phantom menace heeft kleine Anakin nog een pothelmkapsel maar dat verruilt hij in Episode II – Attack of the clones voor de foute haarsnit van een leerling-Jedi of Padawan.

Queen Amidala is niet ongevoelig voor de mullet van Anakin. Er komt een tweeling van: Luke en Leia. Maar dat mag papa Anakin niet weten. Hij heeft zich immers bekeerd tot de dark side. Zijn lange, wilde manen zijn er dan ook naar. Helaas valt er niet lang te pronken

met die dikke haardos. In een episch gevecht met zijn leermeester Obi-Wan valt Anakin op de vulkanische planeet Mustafar in hete lava.

Weg haar en ook een paar ledematen. Hij overleeft, maar enkel in het iconische gepantserde zwarte pak met helm. Exit Anakin, enter Darth Vader.

Wie braaf de lichte zijde blijft frequenteren, is Yoda. De groene Jedi-opdonder met de grote oren moet het stellen met enkele sprieten vlassig wit haar. Het weerhoudt hem er niet van wijsheden in het rond te strooien: “[Hair]Do. Or [hair]do not. There is no try.” Als het op haar aankomt, is Chewbacca – de furry vriend van Han Solo – beter bedeeld. Het grote wandelende tapijt zou niet misstaan in een shampooreclame.

In de Star Wars-sequeltrilogie (2015-2019) krijgen meiden een prominentere rol. The Force awakens draait om Rey, een vrouwelijke Jedi die al vroeg haar eigen boontjes moet doppen op de zandplaneet Jakku. Haar kapsel hint naar de

oorverwarmers van prinses Leia. Maar de drie dotjes achteraan houden haar ogen en oren vrij. Handig als je met een lichtzwaard moet zwaaien. De slechterik van dienst is Kylo Ren. De zoon van prinses Leia en Han Solo maakt een uitschuiver naar de donkere zijde. Dat wordt onderstreept door zijn pikzwarte, wuivende haardos die wat doet denken aan de haarsnit van Anakin. De rebellen krijgen het zwaar te verduren in de nieuwe trilogie. Het mag allemaal wat soberder met dat haar.

Uitzondering: Vice Admiral Holdo. Zij gaat voluit voor de krultang en paars. Een kleur die ze groots en gracieus weet te dragen, maar pas op: onder dat haar schuilt een harde tante.

Zin om zelf mee te draaien in het Star Wars-universum? Dat kan.

Op de expo kan je je eigen Star Wars-alter ego creëren op basis van je favoriete karakter. Met of zonder nektapijt.

The British producer is bringing his Animal Spirits to BRDCST

O

n The Animal Spirits, which was released last autumn, James Holden explores the intersection of organic and electronic sounds, searching for the roots of the trance that has enraptured him his whole life. At first glance, it looks like not much is left of the DJ/producer, who made his breakthrough in 2004 with a remix of Nathan Fake’s “The Sky Was Pink”. “It is true that I am no longer a DJ,” the 38-year-old Brit says when we phone him at his studio in a suburb of London. But the transition from repetitive dance floor beats to the hypnotizing psychedelic ambient on The Animal Spirits came more naturally than the career switch might lead you to suspect. An intense encounter with a number of traditional Moroccan musicians led him to change direction.

“For me personally it was both a way to connect with the culture of my Greek grandmother, who was born in Turkey near the Syrian border, and to connect with the way the world is today. The fact that people from North Africa and the Middle East are being pressured to move is the root of the current unrest in Europe. I know it is not enough just to reassure everyone, but hand on heart: my Greek-Turkish grandmother is fundamentally no different from my English grandmother. I find it really heart-warming that a festival like BRDCST highlights all the similarities between the so-called differences in music and in the world.”

Is it a coincidence that almost all the themes championed by BRDCST are also on your new album, or did you simply aim to capture the zeitgeist on The Animal Spirits?

JAMES HOLDEN: Probably both. We live in an era

The things that drive British producer James Holden are all the things that the BRDCST festival holds dear, so it is giving him a prominent place on this year’s programme.

You swapped straightforward dance music for a more organic and instinctive approach. Was that a leap out of hedonistic culture into spiritual enlightenment?

HOLDEN: Of course there is spirituality in The

Animal Spirits, but my music is primarily intended for me to get closer to myself. Dance music is folk too. Especially now that the genre has a certain age. I never wanted to make anything that somebody else could easily pigeonhole. That’s not in my nature. As far as I’m concerned, you could remove the straight kick drum – which is one of the basic ingredients of house – from a house record and yet its house spirit would still be intact. At a certain point I became interested in removing the labels that we attach to genres. When you try

in which it is important to reach out to the rest of the world and to bring that world to Europe.

The starting point for the album was all the things we have in common as people. We all react the same way to basic stimuli. In essence, the electronic trance music I loved as a teenager is not so very different from mystical Moroccan or Asian religious music.

to play house with a live band, it quickly starts sounding like jazz. If you make repetitive jazz, you have the basic foundation of a techno album.

You know, during my childhood, there was only classical music in our house, until I discovered the counterculture thanks to my hip physics teacher, who was a fervent clubber and raver. The electronic music he gave me was incredibly exciting, but its basics were not so very different from the three chords that I would play for half an hour at a time, often in a loop, on the classical piano. I have always been fascinated by repetitive patterns. When I used to listen to my favourite Judas Priest album, I would focus on a good riff that was repeated time after time. The quest for whatever caused that hypnotic feeling was the most important motivation to try it myself as a DJ and producer.

In Morocco, you played music with the Gnawa masters. Why was that a turning point?

JAMES HOLDEN:

“In Morocco, I saw somebody going into a trance. That was my first confron­tation with the hypnotic power of music”

Moroccan woman who worked at the place where we were rehearsing happened to come in during a session of my colleague Vessel and a Gnawa master, but the repetitive, piercing tones of his percussion instrument made her lose consciousness almost immediately, and they had to carry her back out. This wasn’t just mumbo jumbo, sorcery, superstition, or some trick. The fact that her brain had become fixed on the frequency of the rhythm and that led her into a trance is completely consonant with the scientific literature.

HOLDEN: Because that was where I was first

confronted with the hypnotic power of music. I had read a lot about how our brain reacts to music and the way religions deal with that therapeutic effect. But that was the first time I actually saw somebody go into a trance. A

HOLDEN: Yes, but after a good morning

meditation, I still have the same kind of feeling as after listening to a Terry Riley record.

Is it true that your first session with the Moroccan musicians didn’t go as expected?

HOLDEN: Yes, to my great shame. Their

percussion instruments were so much more musical than my expensive box of high-tech tricks. Electronic instruments are designed to predominate musically. It had to succumb because as long as my sequencer did not listen to the musicians, we would be stuck on different wavelengths. Fortunately, I was able to repatch my modular synth to a machine on which I could really perform. After that we were fine. “Bania”, one of the tracks we recorded then, is still one of my favourites. Sitting on the floor, face to face with master Mahmoud Guinia and his band, we really felt one another through the music. He may have been of a different generation and from a different

FOURTH WORLD MUSIC

One might wonder what is innovative about Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, but the women’s choir that has been active since 1952 keeps getting rediscovered by each new generation. In the mid-1980s, Ivo Watts-Russell and his hip record label 4AD ensured their breakthrough in the West. More recently, their goosebump-inducing vocal brilliance was picked up by Lady Gaga and Gorillaz and was sampled by Drake and Leftfield. A new group of singers recently recorded with Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), who will be joining them in Brussels. The time is ripe for another revival.

The term “Fourth World Music” was invented

by Jon Hassell, who released Dream Theory in Malaya. Fourth World Volume 2 in 1981. Now, this record that crosses ethnic music with electronica is the soundtrack for an evening around the label that rereleased it. Tak:til, a fresh imprint of Glitterbeat, is not only digging up the American ambient musician (who studied under Stockhausen and played with La Monte Young and Brian Eno), it is also presenting the slow, tactile music of Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society and the Slovenian trio Širom.

The fact that musicians like Ed Sheeran get a lot of streams on Spotify can’t stop the counterculture anymore.

Where is the impressive tree from the album cover, and why is it covered in colourful ribbons?

You made the new album in the midst of the Brexit commotion. Many of your compatriots don’t seem to have embraced the same values that you champion.

HOLDEN: The tree is in a wood in Norwich. I

HOLDEN: I am mortified. It is terrifying. Their

love trees. They have deep roots and capture time. Their shape alone tells their whole life story. The ribbons were an idea from an acquaintance whose sister has Williams Syndrome. Patients with this congenital cognitive disorder enjoy listening to music and love repetitive patterns. When the girl in question doesn’t tie her hair back in a ponytail, she swishes it in front of her face all the time, mesmerized by the same movement that it makes repeatedly. She also loves ribbons.

There is that trance again…

choice might lead to the fact that only commercial deejays and the Ed Sheerans of the world get to enjoy freedom of movement, which is one of the most important achievements of post-war Europe. I am not looking forward to having to submit work permit applications for seven musicians to come and play in Europe.

Are we really going to reintroduce all those bureaucratic barriers? In our sector, underground culture will suffer especially. By that I mean the musicians who do not earn a lot of money and who don’t do it for the money.

Perhaps we had become too complacent, but nevertheless, I think protesting against Brexit is still worth fighting for.

Do you feel as though audiences are more receptive to your self-proclaimed “synth-led folk-trance standards”?

On the other hand, there are other places than the stage to voice my concerns. When I am out walking the dog, I can also enter into a respectful dialogue with an older man or woman on park bench and try to change their mind. That might even get me closer to the root than as an artist on a pedestal.

BRDCST is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the innovative Ghent-based Consouling Sounds with a label night (8/4, 18.00, AB Club) focused on drone master Dirk Serries; the fifteenth anniversary of Madlib’s instrumental hip hop classic Shades of Blue by letting the young British jazz hounds Vels Trio (4/4, 20.30, The Music Village) loose on it, and the fiftieth of White Light/White Heat by playing the Velvet Underground’s album “quasi-completely”. Only the unforgettable final track “Sister Ray” is being made over by the noise-orchestra BARST (5/4, 23.30, AB Club) in an epic guitar manifesto.

The Ancienne Belgique is injecting BRDCST with a heavy dose of jazz. With Josef Leimberg (5/4, 20.30, The Music Village), it is being amped up to cosmic proportions. The American trumpet player was a guest on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, and on his debut Astral Progressions, he has set the bar very high for the shape of spiritual jazz to come. Mattias De Craene is doing his very best to reach that bar with his project MDC III (8/4, 17.00, AB Box). Along with drummers Simon Segers and Lennert Jacobs, the Nordmann reed player gives a particularly compelling performance.

By giving a stage to adventurous sounds from the African diaspora, BRDCST is combining its musical mission with a political statement about the worst periods of Western history.

The festival has programmed the activist British band Young Fathers (6/4, 19.00, AB Box), but the message of the NON Worldwide collective is harder-hitting: be there when the fierce Chino Amobi (6/4, 19.00, AB Box) describes the American wasteland, and when the Belgian-Congolese Nkisi (6/4, 21.00, Bonnefooi) denounces the system with a resounding electronica offensive and Congolese rhythms.

e film The Shape of Water, qui a triomphé aux Oscars, relègue-t-il doucement à la préhistoire le dédain pour le cinéma de genre ? Ce qui est certain, c’est que le BIFFF défend les films de fantaisie, les thrillers, les films d’horreur, les contes et la science-fiction depuis 1983. Avec passion et succès: parmi les

festivals les plus populaires du pays, il jouit d’une renommée internationale.

Fabrice Du Welz est bien placé pour le savoir. Le réalisateur des incontournables Calvaire et Alleluia, travaille en ce moment sur le scénario de Adoration, un film sur l’amour pathologique et destructif entre deux enfants, avec

Benoît Poelvoorde, Peter Van den Begin, Emmanuelle Béart et Béatrice Dalle. Mais pour causer BIFFF, il prend le temps. « Le BIFFF, c’est chez moi. J’y ai grandi.

J’étais un visiteur assidu du temps de mes vingt ans. Je suis un grand cinéphile et, à l’époque, je dévorais compulsivement les films.

J’ai fait des découvertes in-

croyables au BIFFF. J’ai appris à connaître des réalisateurs comme David Cronenberg, Takashi Miike et Kim Ki-duk. Mais je suis aussi très attaché à l’ambiance festive et à l’esprit du festival. À l’époque, j’ai traqué Freddy Bozzo (une des forces motrices du BIFFF, ndlr) jusqu’à ce qu’il sélectionne mon film Quand on est amoureux, c’est

merveilleux. La projection du film au BIFFF fut pour moi une consécration. L’année passée, j’ai pu y donner une master class ».

Cette année, Du Welz est aussi impliqué dans une master class, même s’il ne s’agit pas de la sienne. Le réalisateur de films d’horreur Jonas Govaerts (Welp) et lui-même animeront la conférence de Guillermo del Toro. La carrière du cinéaste amoureux des monstres est au sommet. The Shape of Water lui a valu cette année d’être le grand gagnant des Oscars.

PASSAGE DE FLAMBEAU « L’ancienne génération de Freddy Bozzo et des frères Delmotte passe le flambeau à la nouvelle génération après 36 ans de service. Ils ont entrepris un parcours magnifique et je trouve ça super qu’ils puissent conclure sur un gros coup : la venue de Guillermo del Toro ». « Personnellement, mon cœur penche pour Le Labyrinthe de Pan et L’Échine du Diable mais je comprends bien l’immense consécration de The Shape of Water. Il s’agit de son film le plus populaire et le plus accessible. Ça parle d’amour et ça touche aussi bien les petites filles que les papys. Le résultat est très gracieux. Selon moi, il va entrer dans la postérité. » La nouvelle édition du BIFFF repose également sur la rétrospective de Kim Jee-woon. Le Coréen excelle en matière d’action explosive, de violence cinématographique et d’humour noir. « Kim Jee-woon est un cinéaste important mais il ne faut pas en avoir peur. Il ne fait pas des films

d’auteur compliqués mais des films forts et populaires. I saw the devil et A bittersweet life sont incroyablement bons. » L’offre du BIFFF a pour tradition d’être très large. Cette année, on pourra y voir aussi bien How to talk to girls at parties, un film à célébrités avec Nicole Kidman et Elle Fanning que Boar, un film d’exploitation australien sur un sanglier meurtrier. Du Welz a vite fait son choix. « Boar évidemment. Ça me semble être le film le plus chouette du festival. On peut le dire : le BIFFF ne programme pas que des films de grande qualité.

Mais la magie du festival c’est qu’on s’y amuse toujours, quoi qu’il arrive. »

Sous la douche, le ciel is Brussel ten voeten uit: surrealistisch

Algehele onthouding Met verbazing zie ik in Cinema Palace hoe een van de bollen van het Atomium loskomt. Langzaam zweeft hij als een zeppelin de lucht in. Een tweede bol komt los, dan een derde. Op het scherm verschijnt de titel van de film: Sous la douche, le ciel. Het is de tweede avond van het documentairefestival Millenium. De film volgt de onvermoeibare hoofdpersoon Laurent d’Ursel, een van de bezielers achter de vzw DoucheFLUX, een organisatie die eind vorig jaar een gebouw opende waar dagelijks honderd daklozen komen douchen. Dat was het resultaat van jaren lobbyen, verbouwen en wachten op vergunningen.

De documentaire volgt dat proces. Hoe D’Ursel op Crocs, zijn handelsmerk, weldoeners ontmoet in hotellobby’s en kantoren om geld in te zamelen om de dienstverlening van DoucheFLUX waar te maken. Een douche is immers zoveel meer dan een straal water. Wie gedoucht heeft, kan de wereld tegemoet treden zonder afkeer op het gezicht van de mensen te zien. Betekent waardigheid niet het beeld dat je van jezelf hebt, gereflecteerd zien in de blikken van anderen?

DoucheFLUX krijgt het voor elkaar. Het collectief vindt bijna anderhalf miljoen euro en een geschikt gebouw. Alleen de NL

gemeente moet nog meewerken en een vergunning afleveren. Als d’Ursel belt met de Anderlechtse administratie, blijkt er opnieuw vertraging te zijn opgelopen.

Er is nog geen beslissing genomen.

“Abstention générale,” klinkt het aan de andere kant van de lijn. Algehele onthouding. Niemand heeft zich willen uitspreken. Het is geen ja en geen nee.

D’Ursel vraagt of dat al eerder is voorgevallen. Nee, nog nooit, mijnheer.

Wie de cijfers erbij haalt, ziet dat een initiatief als DoucheFLUX broodnodig is.

Brussel telt ruim 3.000 daklozen en 20.000 mensen zonder vast adres. Een derde van de bevolking leeft onder de armoedegrens en een tiende van de Brusselse gezinnen heeft geen degelijke badkamer. Het geld voor DoucheFLUX komt van privé-investeerders, er zijn geen subsidies nodig. Het enige wat de vzw vraagt van de overheid is een vergunning goed te keuren. Plotseling begrijp ik waarom die bollen loskwamen.

Het is Brussel ten voeten uit: surrealistisch. Dat de vergunning er uiteindelijk kwam, verandert daar niets aan.

Halverwege de film rolt een van de bollen van het Atomium door de straten. Het zilveren staal flikkert in de zon.

anaf vandaag draaien er maar liefst twee films van Steven Spielberg in de bioscoop. The Post is een ode aan de persvrijheid en steekt kritische journalisten een hart onder de riem, terwijl Ready player one een pure popcornprent is.

Nieuw is die spreidstand niet voor de 71-jarige regisseur van zowel E.T. als Schindler’s list. De inspiratie voor Ready player one vond Spielberg in de gelijknamige scifiroman van Ernest Cline, die bol staat van de referenties aan de popcultuur, voornamelijk die van de jaren 1980.

In een nabije toekomst brengen de mensen zo weinig mogelijk tijd door in de miserabele echte wereld en zoveel mogelijk in Oasis, een virtuele realiteit waar ze kunnen zijn wie ze willen, en naar hartenlust kunnen gamen. De bedenker van die wereld is overleden, maar stipuleerde dat zijn imperium eigendom wordt van de eerste die drie sleutels vindt die ergens in de schier onmetelijke Oasis verborgen zijn.

De zoektocht naar die sleutels doet niet onder voor die naar de heilige graal. Wanneer weesjongen Wade (Tye Sheridan) de eerste sleutel bemachtigt, krijgt hij zwaar bonje met de baas (Ben Mendelsohn) van een groot bedrijf dat enorme middelen inzet om eigenaar te worden van Oasis.

De grote minpunten van de film zijn de eendimensionale personages die amper evolueren, de vanuit dramatisch oogpunt weinig originele schattenjacht en de ouderwetse klemtoon op de blanke jongen die tegelijk de wereld redt en een meisje versiert.

De grote pluspunten zijn de rotvaart, het design, de voor één keer vlotte combinatie van een

virtuele en een echte wereld én de aaneenrijging van opwindende spektakelstukken − zoals de autorace met een DeLorean, de rode motorfiets uit Akira, een tyrannosaurus rex en King Kong − of de lang uitgesponnen hommage aan The shining van Stanley Kubrick. De pletwals van overduidelijke en geniepige, verstopte verwijzingen naar de popcultuur is opmerkelijk maar ook ietwat nerdy, nostalgisch en oppervlakkig.

De korte versie: opa Spielberg trakteert nog eens op popcorn. Hij heeft er al betere gemaakt, maar hij smaakt wel.

Steven Spielberg fait suivre de très près son film réaliste The Post de Ready Player One, un pur film à pop-corn. Dans un futur proche, les gens passent le plus de temps possible dans un monde virtuel utopique appelé Oasis. En trouvant la clé du jeu, l’orphelin Wade s’attire des ennuis avec un chef d’entreprise prêt à tout pour détenir Oasis. Les personnages sont superficiels, la course au trésor est clichée et le héros, un mâle blanc, est passé de mode. Mais on a tout de même apprécié la folle course automobile, l’action non-stop et l’alliance savante des deux mondes.

In a near future, people spend as much time as possible in a utopian virtual world called Oasis. The inventor will give his empire to the first person who finds three keys that are hidden in Oasis. When the orphan Wade finds the first key, he gets in trouble with a CEO who will stop at nothing to become the owner of Oasis. The characters are superficial, the treasure hunt is clichéd, and the focus on a white hero is old-fashioned. But we did enjoy the rollercoaster pacing, the non-stop action, and the clever combination of two worlds.

Negeer het feit dat de jonge acteurs wat extra oefentijd konden gebruiken om de literaire dialogen gezegd te krijgen. Rosie & Moussa verdient vooral lof. Deze jeugdfilm laat jong en oud voelen hoe kinderen het Brussel van nu bekijken en ervaren. Tenzij mijn herinneringen me bedriegen, verschilt dat niet zo heel erg sterk van dertig jaar geleden. Diversiteit is een vanzelfsprekendheid, de stad is de stad. Een beetje fantasie is welkom en met een vriend of vriendin kan je de wereld aan. Rosie en Moussa, twee ketjes uit dezelfde woontoren, zijn door KVS-directeur Michael De Cock en tekenares Judith Vanistendael verzonnen voor Zazie, de vroegere kinderbijlage van BRUZZ, en vier veelgeprezen boeken. Maar regisseuse Dorothée Van Den Berghe (My queen Karo) heeft van de clash tussen Annie M.G. Schmidt en Molenbeek ook een echt poëtische stadsfilm gemaakt met goede muziek, grafische inventiviteit en veel stemming. Dit is de jeugdfilm die Brussel al langer verdiende. (NR)

À en croire Jean-Luc Godard et D.W. Griffith, une fille et un flingue suffisent à faire un film. Chloé Zhao prouve qu’un homme et un cheval font également l’affaire. La Chinoise échouée aux États-Unis est retournée dans la réserve indienne de Pine Ridge pour filmer le successeur de Songs my brothers taught me, son premier film comparé à Badlands de Terrence Malick. Elle tourne avec Brady Jandreau – un jeune cow-boy Lakota interdit de rodéo par les médecins suite à un grave accident de rodéo – un film sur un jeune cow-boy Lakota qui ne peut plus travailler avec les chevaux suite à un grave accident de rodéo. Que reste-t-il de son identité s’il ne peut plus dresser, entraîner, toucher et monter les chevaux ? Sans compter la vie en plein air chère à son peuple. D’un autre côté, ses idées sur la masculinité sont peut-être dépassées. Zhao accorde beaucoup d’attention à l’authenticité tout en s’efforçant de la rendre la plus belle, la plus impressionniste et la plus cinégénique possible. Dans les plaines immaculées, le champ des possibles est immense pour un homme et son cheval. (NR)

Oubliez le fait que les jeunes acteurs auraient pu répéter davantage pour s’imprégner des dialogues littéraires. Rosie & Moussa mérite surtout des éloges. Ce film permet aux jeunes et aux anciens de se mettre dans la peau des enfants de Bruxelles. La diversité va de soi, la ville est la ville. La fantaisie s’y prête et avec un ou une camarade, on peut conquérir le monde. Dorothée Van Den Berghe propose un vrai film urbain et poétique. Le film pour enfants que Bruxelles méritait depuis longtemps.

Ignore the fact that the young actors could have used some extra time to practice their delivery of the literary dialogues, Rosie & Moussa deserves nothing but praise.

This youth film lets both young and old feel how children experience Brussels today.

Diversity is self-evident, the city is the city. Fantasy and imagination are encouraged, and with a friend you can take on the world. Dorothée Van Den Berghe has made a genuinely poetic urban film. This is the youth film that Brussels has deserved for a long time.

The Chinese-American Chloé Zhao returned to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to make the follow-up to Songs My Brothers Taught Me. Galerie E2 has brought a Japanese master to Brussels: Daisuke Ichiba. With a gentle hand and a sharp knife, he connects the thin layer of human beauty with the visceral matter that lies beneath. — KURT SNOEKX

ince it first surfaced in Vitrine 5 of Recyclart in the spring of 2014, the nomadic Galerie E2 has made it its mission to delve deep in the underground to emerge with raw and uncut gems. A profound darkness of the most colourful kind has become the hallmark of the crew that for a while now has found a permanent hide-out aboveground at Sterput. And that is no different in their new exhibition featuring the work of Daisuke Ichiba.

Since the late 1980s, the Japanese master has been drawing a magic-realist world inspired by Japanese iconography, the golden age of manga, rock-hard underground and avant-garde, the deepest crevices of the psyche, and the dense smoke that they emit in the form of nightmares, obsessions, and hallucinations.

“Put simply, I paint humanity,” is how he himself describes this. “Humans simultaneously combine tenderness and violence.

Choosing to create work that is only beautiful feels artificial. Thus I paint both. You cannot sever the two.” The result is an oeuvre that immerses silent beauty in a turbulent and grotesque chaos, forging a harmony between brutal violence and fragile serenity.

SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVER This precarious, paradoxical balance that “violence bijin painter” Daisuke Ichiba – bijin meaning “beautiful woman” – thus creates

between the beautiful and the abject, has an exceptionally alienating and yet tantalizingly seductive effect. At Sterput you can see drawings that are colourful, naïve, bursting with child-like chaos. But the majority are drawn predominantly in black and white, with one penetrating colour and great attention to detail, and they tenderly but also uncompromisingly depict a world on the edge of the abyss. Against a background of volcanic eruptions, slaughter, apocalyptic scenes, and blood-red, swirling skies, mutilated characters appear, half-eaten, mutated creatures and fleshy, hovering eyes. Caricatured, manga-like dolls stand in a landscape littered with infected bodies, a knife in their hand. Figures pose for an end-time class photo, a last supper, a triumphal portrait, severed heads in their fists, skulls in the arms.

In the centre of this décor we see female figures – from schoolgirls in uniforms to beautiful young women – who are indomitable, who continue to attest to a delicate, mysterious impassivity, their eyes apathetically focused on their interior. Sometimes they are marked by stigmata or other wounds, other times they are naked on a bed, just before committing harakiri. Taboos are shattered, sex and death appear inextricably linked. But they all wear this impenetrable, imperturbable expression. Is it a way of bearing what is happening around them? To process what they have seen? What they, avenging angels, have done? Is it resignation? Heartlessness? What do they know that we don’t?

Daisuke Ichiba scrapes the thin layer of civilization off the world, the mask off the face, and at the same time shows the human paradox tenderly and frankly: there can only be light in the darkness.

Et mon coucou, c’est du poulet ?

J

e voudrais manger, je suis tout seul… ».

La réponse fuse: « C’est mieux d’être seul que mal accompagné ». Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que le personnel de Kipkot n’a pas sa langue en poche. C’est d’ailleurs ce que l’on retient d’un déjeuner que l’on a pris récemment sur place : la gentillesse et le sourire de l’équipe en salle.

Et pour le reste ? Du bon et du moins bon, un peu à l’image du décor. Vu rapidement, l’adresse plante un chouette décor de restaurant familial dans lequel domine le bois. De près, l’œil butte sur quelques détails boiteux comme les chaises et les tables qui ne s’harmonisent pas avec le caractère brut du comptoir dont les contours dominent la salle.

Le comptoir en question est une belle réussite. Faisant place à des poulets tournant sur une broche, il met en appétit. La carte détaille le concept de cette rôtisserie « monoproduit ». On apprend qu’il s’agit de « coucou de Malines » provenant d’un élevage artisanal fonctionnant sur des principes de nourriture végétale – blé, orge, millet - et de croissance lente. L’information est intéressante mais un peu générale, on aimerait en savoir plus. Quel est l’élevage en question ? D’où provient la nourriture ? Quelle est la durée de vie des poulets ? Toutes ces interrogations n’empêchent pas de commander, on se décide pour un quart de poulet proposé avec deux accompagnements (14,50 euros). Moins de dix minutes plus tard, l’assiette arrive à table.

Il s’agit d’une cuisse et d’une aile joliment caramélisées à l’aide d’une marinade sauce teriyaki et miel. Légèrement relevée, celle-ci

On s’interroge : comment un poulet qui passe des heures sur une broche peut-il arriver aussi refroidi sur l’assiette ? Bizarre.

Heureusement, les frites servies en side dish sont, quant à elles, chaudes et bien croquantes. Mention aussi pour la salade de type mesclun (jeunes pousses d’épinards, de betteraves, roquette…) qui fait place à une vinaigrette tranchée et des graines d’orge.

De naam Kipkot verraadt het al: kip is het enige waarvoor je hier komt. Of juister: Mechelse koekoek, traag grootgebracht op tarwe, gerst en gierst. Interessant, al blijft de verstrekte informatie ietwat algemeen. We bestellen een kwart kip met twee bijgerechten (€14,50), die na tien minuten op tafel verschijnt. Het gaat om een bil en een vleugel die aangenaam gekaramelliseerd zijn met teriyaki en honing. Het vlees is niet droog (de hoofdzonde bij gevogelte) maar ook niet erg warm − raar voor een kip die uren heeft staan braden.

De frietjes erbij zijn gelukkig wel op temperatuur en heerlijk krokant. Een speciale vermelding ook voor de hartelijke ontvangst!

La fromagerie-charcuterie a ouvert ses portes en 2016 dans un minuscule magasin de la rue Haute.

L’enseigne compte désormais un grand frère à Saint-Gilles. Installé dans l’ancienne moutonnerie Crabbe, l’endroit a conservé son charmant décor d’origine: petites tuiles orange vif, comptoirs de marbre et fresque mythologique. Le magasin propose une sélection fournie mais bien ordonnée de fromages artisanaux (essayez le Gorgonzola !) et de charcuterie.

Malgré le look nostalgique, l’affaire est étonnamment contemporaine.

The staff are friendly and warm but the food, like the decor, is hit and miss. As the menu explains, the concept is based on a single product: “coucou de Malines”, slow-growing chickens, hand-reared on a diet of vegetables. We would like to know more about how they’re raised. We chose a quarter chicken with two sides (€14.50), consisting of a thigh and a wing, nicely caramelised with a teriyaki and honey marinade. The meat wasn’t dry, which would have been unforgivable, but it did arrive lukewarm. The fries, luckily, were hot and crunchy. On ne pouvait pas rêver mieux : la cave offre de grands espaces où les fromages peuvent prendre le temps de s’affiner. Saint Octave est l’exemple brillant d’une petite affaire grandement authentique. Laloux regorge de projets. « Dans l’avenir, nous allons nous-mêmes fumer du fromage et de la charcuterie », lance-t-il en montrant un vieux fumoir où le boucher Crabbe fumait sa viande.

Als de radio Absynthe Minded speelt, dan voelt dat inmiddels even ver­ trouwd aan als die ene coltrui waar je elke winter naar teruggrijpt. Het is dan wel van 2013 geleden dat je nog iets nieuws hoorde van Bert Ostyn en co., en ook de bezetting is met drie verse muzikanten flink door elkaar geschud, maar comebackplaat Jungle eyes kwam vorige herfst precies op tijd om een koude winter door te komen.

Aangedreven door de melancholische zang wisten fraaie popsongs zoals ‘The execu­ tion’, ‘Beam’ en ‘Kingpin’ − waarvan de meeneuriebaarheidsfactor hoger ligt dan de experimenteerzucht − zich oorwurm­ gewijs in je hersenpan te nestelen. (TP)

De Japanse, intussen in Brussel wonende Koyuki Kazahaya heeft zich sinds haar studies in Tokio en Antwerpen toegelegd op de verkenning van ruimtes die even tastbaar als mentaal zijn. In verschillende grafische en druktechnieken – van gravure en mezzotint tot houtskooltekeningen en olieverf op doek – maakt ze zich plaatsen eigen die intussen vernietigd, verlaten of vergeten zijn, maar waar de verhalen van de mensen die er woonden nog voelbaar zijn. De concrete impuls voor haar Silent city-reeks vormde de kernramp van Fukushima. De leegte die ze daar aantrof, verbindt ze met desolate, stille landschappen elders in de wereld. (KS) NL

Les toiles que Michel Mouffe expose dans une des salles des Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts ont été réalisées spécialement en fonction du lieu. Elles transcendent aussi l’aboutissement d’une recherche picturale menée depuis les années quatre-vingt. Le sujet de ces peintures, c’est la matière peinte elle-même qui vibre comme si elle était vivante. Le léger renflement qu’elles dissimulent ajoute un voile de trouble jouant du caractère organique de la couleur. Pour en apprécier la profondeur, il faut jouer avec le regard, effleurer la surface qu’on dirait irisée et plonger dessous. Comme une grande respiration. (GB) FR

Rodolphe Janssen is now hosting her third solo show at the gallery. She is further expanding the universe of her poetic research into the many forms, textures, weight, timespan, and the mutual dialogue between materials. In addition to her paintings, in which she creates a surprising field of tension (and balance) between the painted canvas and weathered, found and repurposed pieces of stone or marble, she is also exhibiting a number of intriguing pieces of fused glass.
