The city through the lens of a Brussels photographer

“I have lived in Brussels all my life, but it keeps surprising me. You belong to the city, in one way or another. You can love it and despise it at the same time, but moving elsewhere is unthinkable. You are inexorably linked together! To me, this picture perfectly represents that feeling. I just walked around and let my gaze drift down streets and get lost. I have walked passed this window of a former bar very often without ever really paying attention to it. But for once I stopped and took this photo. To me, this is all of Brussels captured in one picture: a city that is very chaotic, with this broken window, but also with a palm tree that reminds us how good life is here.” EN

Chrystel Mukeba (Belgium, 1983) studied photography at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, and was assistant to Vincen Beeckman. In 2016 she got selected for the FotoFilmic’16 Summer Shortlist. This year she will have a solo show at 44 Gallery in Bruges.

Le renard est de retour « Dude ! Tu as vu les statues dehors ? », me disaient les gars de Fleet Foxes il y a neuf ans. Ils allaient donner leur premier concert en Belgique, l’enthousiasme des interviews était encore au rendez-vous. Sur la couverture de leur superbe premier album, sans titre, on pouvait observer Les Proverbes flamands de Pieter Brueghel l’Ancien, une peinture à l’huile datant de 1559. Cela a tout de suite donné un cachet intemporel et à la fois terre-à-terre au groupe de folk de Seattle. Il faut dire qu’ils étaient particulièrement bien informés pour des Américains : ils savaient que le peintre bruxellois était enterré dans l’Église de la Chapelle. FR

Une chose est sûre : la musique éthiopienne, aujourd’hui c’est de la balle Une petite décennie plus tard, leur musique freak folk saturée d’harmonies dorées et d’arrangements recherchés est un peu moins dans l’air du temps. L’album qu’ils portent sur les fonts baptismaux cette semaine arrive six ans après Helplessness Blues et porte un titre tout aussi peu édifiant: Crack-up. C’est leur troisième album. Ce n’est pas beaucoup. Mais pendant quelque temps, le leader du groupe Robin Pecknold a quitté le monde de la musique pour étudier à New York, mais n’y a pas trouvé de réponses. Avec Crack-up, il livre la suite de l’introspection de Helplessness Blues : la vie n’a pas toujours de sens, et on doit l’accepter. Mais Pour Peckhold, il ne faut pas trop faire

d’exégèse. Il l’a du moins fait savoir dans une longue réaction à Stereogum, un blog musical américain qui a prématurément analysé Crack-up et l’a étiqueté comme un album impénétrable. Il a aussi fait savoir que ce qui l’émeut le plus dans la musique, ce sont les accords, la mélodie, la structure, la texture, les arrangements, l’instrumentation, l’ambiance, le contraste, et ainsi de suite. Un clic de souris permet de découvrir de quel genre de musique il s’agit exactement: sur Spotify, le chanteur a créé une liste de chansons ayant inspiré le nouvel album. On apprend ainsi que Peckhold est fan du gourou de la musique minimaliste Steve Reich et de la muse de Dylan, Karen Dalton, de Stravinsky et de Charles Mingus. Et plus frappant encore, il est fan d’un trio de musiciens éthiopiens : Hailu Mergia, actuellement chauffeur de taxi à Washington DC, Mulatu Astake, un visage actuellement incontournable de l’ethno-jazz, et la magnifique Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, actuellement… tiens que fait-elle actuellement, à 95 ans ? Paraît-il qu’elle vit dans un cloître, mais personne n’en est certain. Une chose est sûre : la musique éthiopienne, aujourd’hui c’est de la balle. Une telle playlist est géniale. Comme ces mixtapes qu’avant, on recevait d’une copine ou d’un ami et qui nous enchantaient toujours un peu plus que nos propres trouvailles. Mais ce que je veux réellement dire : faites-vous plaisir et allez à l’AB en automne, car Fleet Foxes y présentera son nouvel album. Il est super. Et demandez-leur en passant s’ils sont déjà allés s’agenouiller à l’Église de la Chapelle. — TOM ZONDERMAN ILLUSTRATION: WIDE VERCNOCKE

A few days ago, Chris Martin wrote on Facebook that he constantly listens to four tracks now. Besides recent songs by London Grammar, Lana Del Rey, and Shakira, he also mentioned Stromae’s “Formidable”. Our perfidious minds immediately wondered whether the frontman of Coldplay said that to humour his Belgian fans, given that the band will soon be coming to play two sold-out concerts at the Koning Boudewijnstadion/Stade Roi Baudouin. But actually, we don’t think the teddy bear of pop would even be capable of it. He only speaks EN

conciliatory language, and his latest album A Head Full of Dreams is his most colourful yet. “Let’s keep it together in Europe,” he recently said during a concert in Munich, after he invited a German fan onto the stage to accompany him on the keyboard, after which a fragment from Muhammad Ali’s “God is watching me” speech resounded through the Stadium. Like it or lump it, bringing people together and spreading hope in a divided world has become Coldplay’s most important strength.

Dit weekend kan je gratis aan de jazz tijdens Jazz Jette June. Een van de namen die in het oog springt, is die van Bram Weijters. Weijters maakte jaren het mooie weer bij popgroep Dez Mona en speelt piano bij het cross-overgezelschap Hamster Axis of the One-Click Panther. Internationaal scoort hij vooral als echte jazzcat. Na zijn tournee met de Amerikaanse trompettist Chad McCullough om hun gezamenlijke album Feather te promoten, keert Weijters terug naar een kwartet met trompettist Carlo Nardozza, bassist Manolo Cabras en drummer Teun Verbruggen. Het viertal speelt eigen werk maar ook jazz-standards die deze vier improvisators een wel zeer aparte wending geven. NL

Comme le prouve celui situé rue de la Tulipe où œuvrent les illustratrices Fanny Dreyer et Émilie Seron, la designeuse textile Cécile Barraud de Lagerie, les artistes Bérangère Hénin et Anthony Peskine, la graphiste Géraldine Taymans, la designeuse de bijoux Anaïs Dulac et le vidéaste Stéphane Leclerc. Ce week-end, ils ouvrent les portes de leur lieu de travail pour faire découvrir au public, sous la forme d’un marché, leurs dernières productions ainsi que celles d’amis artistes, comme l’équipe haute en couleur derrière le fanzine pour enfants Cuistax, Anne Brugni et McCloud Zicmuse de l’Hôtel Rustique cinq étoiles et la créatrice de prêt-à-porter Leslie Ferré. As a founding member of the experimental metal band Sunn O))), guitarist Stephen O’Malley has explored all the possible gradations of loud. Synth player Peter Rehberg has been running the electronica/ avant-garde label Editions Mego for more than twenty years. KTL was founded ten years ago after they played music together in Kindertotenlieder by theatre director Gisèle Vienne. Intriguing, slowly moving sound patterns that are rooted in minimalist experiments and propelled by threatening drones remain the core of their palette, as we heard during the concert that the duo played earlier this year in the London church St John on Bethnal Green. You can listen to it on their Bandcamp page, and it is the perfect appetiser for their gig at the Bozar Electronic Series. EN

Les romans de Catherine Cusset aux intrigues savamment construites, balancent entre l’autofiction et l’exploration des thèmes du désir, de la famille et du corps. Installée depuis une vingtaine d’années aux États-Unis et aujourd’hui à New York, la Française y a sans doute puisé l’autodérision, le ton direct et l’absence de tabous qui irriguent la littérature nord-américaine. Dans son dernier roman, L’autre qu’on adorait, primé du premier « Choix Goncourt de la Belgique » décerné par les lycéens, elle s’inspire d’un de ses amis pour raconter la vie intérieure d’un génie inaccompli, foudroyé par le suicide à 39 ans. Alleskunner Elko Blijweert draait al jaren mee in de achterhoede van de belpopscene. Met zijn kleurrijke solodebuut I bambini di basilisco treedt hij eindelijk op het voorplan. — TOM ZONDERMAN

EKSTER “Victor Robyn van het label Ekster heeft me aangemoedigd om een soloplaat te maken. In de meeste groepen waarin ik speel, ben ik gitarist, maar hij wist dat ik thuis heel wat synths en drumcomputers had liggen. De meeste mensen kennen mij als gitarist door al de groepen waarin ik gitaar speel, maar ik ben altijd al gefascineerd geweest door elektronische muziek. In de loop der jaren heb ik mezelf uit pure verliefdheid een hele batterij elektronische instrumenten aangeschaft. Voor EXO2, een van de compilaties van Ekster, had ik één nummer gemaakt, en dat vond Victor heel erg goed. Dat heeft me gestimuleerd om aan I bambini di basilisco te beginnen. Die instrumenten stonden daar toch maar stof te vergaren, dus vond ik het prima om er eindelijk iets mee te doen.”

242 “Toen ik nog met Dead Man Ray optrad, deelden we ooit eens op een festival de affiche met Front 242. Ik was zware fan en heb toen gevraagd of ik als gastgitarist bij hen het podium op mocht, dat hadden ze ook al gedaan met Luc Van Acker en Tom Morello van Rage Against the Machine. Het klikte. Met Daniel Bressanutti en Patrick Codenys heb ik daarna de band Male or Female gevormd. We hebben een paar platen gemaakt waarmee we zelfs in de VS en Japan zijn gaan toeren. Van hen heb ik veel over elektronische muziek opgestoken. De naam van mijn soloproject, Elko B., is trouwens een verwijzing naar Daniel Bressanutti, die vaak Daniel B. werd genoemd. Dat het mijn soloproject wat anoniemer maakt, is mooi meegenomen.” (Lacht)

BAUHAUS “Toen ik twaalf was heb ik een picture disc gekocht van (de Britse gothic punkband) Bauhaus, Bela Lugosi’s dead. Er prijkten een paar zwart-witfoto’s op van Bela Lugosi, die blijkbaar vaak in vampierfilms speelde. En over die beelden stond de bandnaam in lichtgroen gedrukt. Ik had nog niet veel platen en stalde ze allemaal uit in mijn kast. Toen ik ging slapen en het licht uitknipte, bleken die letters op te lichten. Dat vond ik ge-wel-dig. Victor van Ekster is een grote muziekfreak, maar ook een grafisch ontwerper. Zijn label is een excuus om mooie platenhoezen te maken. (Lacht) Hij heeft de basilisk voor de hoes van I bambini geschilderd, en dan kwamen we op het idee om daar nog een zeefdruk met een glow in the dark aan toe te voegen die over de hoes schuift. Een natte droom die uitkwam.”

BAMBINI “De helft van de liedjes is geïnspireerd door dieren. Zo ben ik bij het beeld van de basilisk uitgekomen, een mythisch, slangachtig wezen dat opduikt in de Latijns-Amerikaanse cultuur en in de Griekse mythologie. Dat Italiaans verwijst naar de Italiaanse muziek waar ik vaak naar luister tegenwoordig. Instrumentale dingen, Morricone en aanverwanten, veelal uit de jaren 1960, impressionistische, melancholische, soms kitscherige muziek. En het verwijst ook naar Matia Bazar, een Italiaanse popgroep die in de jaren 1980 een hitje had met ‘I bambini di poi’ waar ik helemaal gek van was. Ik heb veel voor kindertheater gewerkt, kinderlijke fantasieën zijn een grote invloed. En als je de titel een beetje ontleedt, ben ik het monster en zijn de songs mijn kinderen.”

I BAMBINI DI BASILISCO I bambini di basilisco is nog maar de eerste echte soloplaat van Elko Blijweert, die al sinds midden jaren 1990 de belpopscene kleurt met zijn eigengereide gitaarspel. Destijds onder meer bij Dead Man Ray, Kiss My Jazz en Franco Saint De Bakker, vandaag toert hij met Gruppo Di Pawlowski en Eriksson Delcroix, en maakt hij muziek voor onder meer Wim Vandekeybus en Theater FroeFroe. “Ik ben niet iemand die thuis alleen muziek zit te maken, ik heb altijd in functie van bands gedacht,” duidt Elko Blijweert die karige output onder zijn eigen naam. “Ik had simpelweg niet de behoefte om een soloplaat te maken. Maar vorig jaar heb ik minder theater gedaan, en het voelde alsof ik mijn eigen ei kwijt moest. Ik mag in de groepen waarin ik speel wel mijn eigen partijen invullen, maar creatief gezien had ik meer nodig.” De instrumentale nummers op zijn album vallen op door hun speelsheid, met kinderlijke frivoliteiten en namen als ‘Krokodil’ en ‘Afrikakat’. “Ik heb soms last van door nostalgie getriggerde melancholie. Vroeger meer dan nu. Noem het nostalgie naar een leuke kindertijd die er niet echt geweest is... Nu, ik ben altijd gek geweest op naïeve muziek. Soms benader ik componeren nogal theoretisch, dan pak ik een prent van een dier en maak daar muziek bij, steunend op de kennis die ik heb opgedaan door de jaren heen. Maar de beste creatieve momenten die ik heb, zijn eigenlijk wanneer ik me kan laten gaan. Zoals bij een theater of dans meegaan in de sfeer van wat er allemaal gebeurt op scène.” Zingen doet hij voorlopig nog niet. “Ik heb nooit de drang gehad om teksten te schrijven. Als kind kon ik ook nooit echt goed liedjes meezingen. Met Joris Caluwaerts doe ik dit najaar wel een project waarin ik ga zingen. Een poging tot toch.”

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker herneemt straks met een nieuwe, jonge Rosas-cast de klassieker Rosas danst Rosas, Jolente De Keersmaeker met haar theatergezelschap STAN een Thomas Bernhard-trilogie in een marathonsessie. Brabantse boeren, langs moederskant eerder Vlaamse intellectuelen.” “We komen dus niet echt uit een kunstzinnig milieu, maar het gezin stond wel open voor de wereld,” zegt Jolente De Keersmaeker. Anne Teresa: “En zoals een groot deel van de Vlaamse kinderen hebben we ook kunnen profiteren van het goede Vlaamse muziekonderwijs. De jaren 1960 waren die van Béjart en het Ballet van Vlaanderen, waardoor ik aan mijn moeder vroeg om te mogen dansen. Van de zeer geïnspireerde Lieve Curias, die van de balletschool van Antwerpen kwam, kregen de meisjes zowel klassieke dans, jazz, hedendaagse dans als improvisatie, en werden we ook meegenomen naar allerlei voorstellingen. Het was ook de tijd van de culturele centra. De Zandloper in Wemmel, maar ook CC Westrand in Dilbeek en vooral CC Strombeek waren de plekken waar we veel films, dans- en toneelvoorstellingen hebben gezien. In Brussel had je in de jaren 1970 dan Mallemunt en wat er rond de Beursschouwburg gebeurde, en in de late jaren 1970, begin ’80 was er het Kaaitheater.

Het jaar dat Rosas danst Rosas in première is gegaan, speelde Jan Decorte King Lear in het Kaaitheater. Het jaar ervoor stond Steve Paxton voor het eerst op het Kaaitheaterfestival. In die periode maakte ook Jan Fabre zijn eerste theatervoorstellingen.” Jolente: “Toen ik in Maria-Boodschap zat, waren het de hoogdagen van de Kaaitheaterfestivals. Toen Fase in de Beursschouwburg in première ging, was ik veertien jaar. Ik heb toen nog de bloemen afgegeven aan Anne Teresa. Ik volgde ook wel les bij Lieve Curias, maar dat was niet helemaal mijn ding. In het tweede en het derde leerjaar wilde ik eigenlijk al toneel spelen, en volgde ik voordracht en toneel aan de muziekschool. Maar er was ook nog een grote liefde voor de boerderij en de dieren. Toen ik in het derde jaar humaniora een werkje moest maken over wat ik later wilde worden, ging het erover dat ik boerin wilde worden. Daarover heb ik lang getwijfeld. Maar na de humaniora ben ik dan toch naar het conservatorium van Antwerpen gegaan. Toen was Anne Teresa al lang vertrokken met Rosas.”

Maar hoewel Anne Teresa sinds begin jaren 1980 danst met Brussel als uitvalsbasis en Jolente sinds begin jaren 1990 theater maakt vanuit Antwerpen, hebben de zussen nog wel meer gemeen dan vestimentaire voorkeuren. De oudste en de jongste uit een gezin van vier meisjes en één jongen werkten rond de millenniumwissel samen aan hybride podiumproducties als Just before, Quartett, I said I, In real time en Kassandra, maar genoten als kind ook al samen van de winnende combinatie van boerenleven en cultuur. Ze groeiden op tussen boerderij en balletschool in Wemmel, om daarna beiden in Brussel te belandden door elkaar af te lossen als humaniorastudenten op het Maria-Boodschaplyceum. “Onze vader was een landbouwer, moeder was een lerares,” vertelt Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Zit er nog iets van de boerenstiel in jullie werk? ANNE TERESA DE KEERSMAEKER: Dat het down-to-

earth is misschien. In het denken over het werk speelt bij mij ook de natuur meer en meer een rol. Het veranderen van de seizoenen, het dagelijkse werk en de lange processen. Zorg dragen, maar ook verwonderd zijn over hoe iets groeit en verandert… Als er al eens een moment is dat ik me afvraag hoe lang ik nog zal doorgaan met waar ik mee bezig ben en wat ik dan in de plaats zou doen, dan denk ik onmiddellijk terug aan het erf. JOLENTE DE KEERSMAEKER: En verder zou je kunnen zeggen dat we werkers zijn. ANNE TERESA: Alfons Goris, die Studio Herman Teirlinck heeft geleid, zei altijd dat kinderen van militairen en van landbouwers goede acteurs werden. (Lacht)

wereld. Dat is bij mij pas vele jaren later gebeurd, toen we met STAN ook veel in Frankrijk begonnen te spelen. Ik mis Brussel nog altijd hoor (lacht), maar ik kwam in Antwerpen ook in een inspirerende omgeving terecht. Op het conservatorium kregen we les van Dora van der Groen, Lucas Vandervost, Luk Perceval, Ivo van Hove en Josse De Pauw. Die zei als eerste tegen ons: “Laten jullie mij maar eens iets zien. Maak zelf iets.” ANNE TERESA: Het is daarna vooral door PARTS dat we weer bij elkaar gekomen zijn. Omdat er in het curriculum voor de studenten ook

In jullie jeugdjaren hadden jullie dus dezelfde culturele referenties. Maar daarna scheidden de wegen.

natuurlijk al goed onthaald, maar Rosas danst Rosas betekende het begin van het gezelschap en was de voorstelling die na Fase de eigen taal en eigen stijl bevestigde. Rosas danst Rosas was de voortzetting van de schriftuur van Fase, maar affirmeerde meer haar identiteit: het uitgesproken vrouwelijke, het intens fysieke, en het structurele – dat aanleunt bij het Amerikaanse minimalisme, maar dan zonder de afstand en het koude mathematische dat men er altijd mee associeert. Door de intense vrouwelijke lichamelijkheid verwees het stuk eerder naar het Duitse expressionisme en Pina Bausch. Het was minimalisme én maximalisme. De muziek was ook gemaakt door Thierry De Mey en Peter Vermeersch van Maximalist! Het was zoals bij Jolente en STAN een werk van mensen die samen op school hadden gezeten. Eerst de dans. Straks herneem je Rosas danst Rosas uit 1983 met een nieuwe cast. Die voorstelling staat te boek als je definitieve doorbraak. ANNE TERESA: Het jaar daarvoor was Fase

Strekte het feit dat Anne Teresa je voorging in de podiumkunsten tot voorbeeld? JOLENTE: Van thuis uit werd ze heel erg gesteund in wat ze deed. Toen ze naar New York ging, was dat een nieuwe wind die door het huis waaide en deden onze ouders al het mogelijke om haar verder te helpen. Ook al was dat voor hen een onbekende wereld. Dus op het moment dat ik zei dat ik naar het conservatorium ging, was dat eigenlijk een logische voortzetting.

theater zat en Jolente kwam lesgeven. Zo ben ik mezelf ook vragen beginnen te stellen over de relatie tussen tekst en dans. Over hoe je een gedachte belichaamt met een beweging. Zo zijn voorstellingen als Just before, Quartett en I said I ontstaan. En cours de route ben ik dan met Rosas wel een traject ingeslagen waarin vooral muziek een cruciale plek heeft ingenomen. Terwijl in het werk van STAN toch vooral de tekst het ankerpunt is.

Wat Rosas en STAN gemeen hebben, is dat jullie ook de achterkant van het dansen en het acteren tonen. In Rosas danst Rosas mag je de impact van de fysieke inspanning zien, in de Bernhard-trilogie mag er zichtbaar ge­souf­fleerd worden. Was dat de Belgische factor die onze podiumkunsten in de late twintigste eeuw zo succesvol maakte? JOLENTE: Bij ons kwam die invloed eigenlijk via Maatschappij Discordia (het baanbrekende Nederlandse theatergezelschap rond Matthias de Koning en Jan Joris Lamers, mb). Zij stelden de toneelspeler opnieuw centraal en braken de vierde wand af. Wij hebben les van hen gekregen. Toen wij van Dora van der Groen iemand mochten kiezen om in ons laatste jaar ons afstudeerproject mee te begeleiden, is het trouwens Anne Teresa die mij gezegd heeft dat ik eens met Matthias moest praten. ANNE TERESA: Is dat zo? JOLENTE: Ik heb het papiertje nog liggen waarop je zijn naam hebt geschreven.

Ook Rosas danst Rosas wordt nu gedanst met nieuwe, jonge mensen. Geeft dat vandaag de emancipatorische inhoud van het nadrukkelijk vrouwelijke stuk een nieuwe lading? ANNE TERESA: Ik ben om te beginnen blij dat

Thomas Bernhard. Met hem heeft STAN een verhouding die inmiddels bijna 25 jaar duurt. JOLENTE: Hij is er inderdaad al lang bij. De eerste voorstelling, Gewoon ingewikkeld, was met Damiaan De Schrijver, Julien Schoenaerts en mij in 1993. Daarna kwam Alles is rustig. We hebben hem ook door Discordia leren kennen. Zij hebben de eerste Bernhards naar de Lage Landen gebracht. Hij is bekend als een ‘scheldschrijver’, maar alles wat hij schrijft is dubbel en draagt ook een poëzie in zich. Het is schelden op de wereld, maar met humor en vooral veel zelfreflectie. Zeker in Alles is rustig legt hij de hele intellectuele klasse op de rooster, inclusief zichzelf. Bernhard verdwijnt niet in de anekdote. Het gaat niet over ces gens-là. Hij keert alles om en houdt je een spiegel voor. “Redde wie zich redden kan” geen slechte titel is gepuurd uit de ‘dramoletten’, die bijwijlen heel heftig en zelfs racistisch zijn. In deze tijden waarin niemand nog een blad voor de mond neemt en waarin alles blijkbaar kan worden gezegd, vind ik deze voorstelling nog relevanter dan tien jaar geleden. Waar die eerste twee stukken meer over de wereld gaan, gaat Eind goed al goed over het intieme. Over de relatie tussen een moeder en haar dochter, en een schrijver die bij hen op bezoek komt. Het stuk gaat ook over kunst, maar is iets meer psychologisch. In de

herneming ervan worden de rollen die eerder door Damiaan De Schrijver en Sara De Roo werden gespeeld, overgenomen door Sara Haeck en Jonas De Vuyst van het RITCS en van het conservatorium. Omdat we Bernhard willen doorgeven aan die jongere generatie, en hen met die taal en dat universum laten kennismaken.

Een trilogie van de overdrijvingskunstenaar bij uitstek, gaan we dan niet in de overtreffende trap? JOLENTE: We spelen de drie stukken in één ruk om te zien wat er gebeurt. In welk universum kom je dan terecht en wat krijg je mee? Je begint om vier uur in de namiddag, om tien uur ’s avonds ben je klaar, en tussenin zie je de mens in al zijn kleinheid, in al zijn schoonheid en in heel veel verschillende contexten. Als je als speler onder de tekst schuift, denk ik niet

Fumiyo Ikeda deze nieuwe generatie mee begeleidt. Het stuk blijft een zeer grote uitdaging door de extreme aard van het materiaal: zeer gestructureerd, zeer repetitief, en zeer intensief. Daarom moet men er zich als groep voor engageren en het vervolgens individueel inkleuren. Die eerste 45 minuten in stilte zijn ook niet iets wat de mensen tegenwoordig nog gewoon zijn. Wat het vrouwelijke aspect betreft: de heftigheid is qua vocabularium heel erg op het vrouwelijke lichaam geënt. De bewegingen zaten heel dicht bij onszelf. Maar toen ik de voorstelling in 1982 maakte, heb ik altijd gezegd dat ik een afkeer had van elke feministische connotatie. De voorstelling refereert niet aan clichématige ideeën. Ze bejubelt de vrouwelijkheid zonder die per se te moeten vermannelijken, en zonder ze te exploiteren. JOLENTE: Maar indirect was het voor de toeschouwer wel een voorstelling met grote impact. Ik herinner me dat nog goed. Als je als jong meisje voorstellingen als Rosas danst Rosas of Elena’s aria ziet, krijg je heel wat mee. Je hebt ze misschien niet als statement gemaakt, maar ze hebben wel dat effect. In een maatschappij waarin mannen nog altijd de suprematie hebben, heeft Rosas danst Rosas dus zeker nog een andere dan zuiver artistieke waarde.

près Frantz, un drame de guerre plutôt classique et rangé, François Ozon a-t-il voulu prouver qu’il n’a pas perdu son côté méchant garçon ? Dans l'amusant et provoquant L’Amant double, le réalisateur français se lâche complètement d’un point de vue stylistique. Il compte sur deux vieilles connaissances pour qu'elles se déshabillent. L’ex-mannequin Marine Vacth, la belle et vilaine fille de Jeune et Jolie de Ozon, se révèle dans la peau d’une jeune femme qui entame une relation double avec son psychanalyste et son mystérieux frère jumeau. Ce fascinant double jeu est le genre de défi dont Jérémie Renier a besoin pour être vraiment bon. Le célèbre Bruxellois avait déjà comblé Ozon dans Les Amants criminels (1999) et Potiche (2010). Pendant le Festival de Cannes, sur la terrasse bouillante d’un hôtel de luxe donnant sur la

Comment se prépare-t-on pour un film érotique sur des psychanalystes qui s’envoient en l’air avec leur patiente ?

Marine, votre personnage raconte qu’elle fut autrefois top-modèle mais qu’elle a fini par s’en lasser. Est-ce une touche personnelle ?

MARINE VACTH : Je me prépare peu pour mes

VACTH : Non ! Tout ce que je dis dans le film vient de François (Ozon). Il ne s’agit pas d’une référence à mon passé. C’est écrit comme ça dans le livre de Joyce Carol Oates qui a servi de base au film. Je ne rêvais pas d’être mannequin. Je ne rêvais pas non plus d’être actrice. C’est arrivé. Puis, j’ai persévéré dans cette voie. J’ai rencontré des gens et j’ai vécu des expériences qui m’ont donné envie de continuer à jouer. Mais jouer n’était pas une aspiration profonde qui remonte à loin.

rôles. Je ne vois pas très bien non plus comment j’aurais pu me préparer. Chloé, mon personnage dans L’Amant double, ne sait rien et doit tout découvrir. Ça n’avait donc pas de sens pour moi de me plonger, comme Jérémie, dans les études sur la gémellité et la psychanalyse. JÉRÉMIE RENIER : Pour préparer le film, ça fait déjà vingt ans que je fais une psychanalyse (remarque que personne ne rit, NDLR). Je rigole ! J’ai commencé à plusieurs reprises mais ça n’a jamais duré longtemps. Avant le film, j’ai lu quelques travaux sur la psychanalyse de Freud

selon que vous étiez le gentil ou le méchant frère jumeau ? RENIER : Oui, j’insiste sur le rôle crucial du montage et de la mise en scène de François Ozon. Le jumeau est-il réel ou non ? L’un des deux existe-t-il seulement ? Manipulent-ils Chloé ? On doit ce mystère presque entièrement à François. Jouer deux personnages dans un même film représentait pour moi un beau défi. Ils ont beau être des frères jumeaux, leurs personnalités diffèrent tellement qu’ils exigeaient chacun un jeu distinct : une autre manière de bouger, une autre manière de regarder,…

Dans un des fantasmes de Chloé, les frères jumeaux s’embrassent pendant un plan à trois . Comment fait-on pour jouer ça ? RENIER : Les effets spéciaux. Comme toujours lorsqu’on apparaît deux fois à l’écran. On travaillait avec une doublure. Je jouais tantôt Paul, tantôt Louis. Ce genre de scène est très technique et tout sauf excitante. Le résultat est plutôt drôle, je me suis régalé en voyant L’Amant double, ici, à Cannes sur grand écran. C’était carrément tordu de me voir m’embrasser moi-même.

Comment chasser la honte pendant les prises des multiples scènes de nu ? VACTH : On s’est très vite fait confiance. Sans confiance ça ne vaut pas la peine de commencer. Aussi bizarre que cela puisse sembler, on a

beaucoup ri. Surtout pendant les scènes de sexe. RENIER : Ces situations sont parfois très comiques. VACTH : le résultat à l’écran ne l’est pas, j’espère, mais les prises elles-mêmes sont très techniques. Nous savons très précisément ce que chacun doit faire et quand. C’est presque une cascade. Tout sauf intime. Vous êtes entouré d’une équipe de tournage. Vous jouez un personnage.

Ozon peut-il tout vous demander ? VACTH : Oui. En ce qui me concerne, faire

demi-tour n’est pas une option une fois le rôle accepté. François travaille en toute confiance. Il ne cache rien. RENIER : Comme il avait déjà travaillé avec Marine et moi, il n’avait pas à gagner notre confiance, il l’avait déjà. Nous pouvions aller plus loin sur base de cette bonne relation.

Ozon dit partout de Marine Vacth qu’elle est devenue une femme et que Jérémie Renier a gagné en force et en virilité. A-t-il, lui aussi, changé depuis vos précédentes collaborations ? VACTH : Le sentiment de complicité fut encore plus fort que pendant le tournage de Jeune et Jolie. On se comprend très vite. RENIER : François est quelqu'un qui se donne à fond. Il est très rigoureux dans son travail et en attend de même de ses collaborateurs. Ce qui le rend parfois ferme envers ceux-ci. Il fait ça

parce qu'il pense au film, à comment atteindre le meilleur résultat possible. En même temps, je suis forcé de me contredire. François est presque toujours joyeux. Il traverse les épreuves propres à tout tournage avec une légèreté que j’admire. Il a quelque chose de jovial et de jeune en lui qui ne l'a jamais quitté. Ça m’a frappé du temps des Amants criminels et ça le caractérise toujours.

« On a beaucoup ri, surtout pendant les scènes de sexe » Jérémie, je m’attendais à voir à Cannes vos débuts en tant que réalisateur. Où en est votre projet ? RENIER : J’ai tourné un film avec mon frère Yannick, Carnivores, sur base d’un scénario qu’on a écrit ensemble. Les prises sont achevées, le montage est terminé. On met la dernière touche à la postproduction. C’est une grande aventure pour tous les deux. Ça reste du cinéma et pourtant ce fut une expérience très différente de ce à quoi nous sommes habitués. Ce fut terriblement intense.

he year is 2017 AD. In the era of Facebook and Instagram, the whole planet is subject to the diktats of beauty and perfection. The whole planet? No! One indomitable Dutchman still holds out against the invaders. His name is Erik Kessels. An artist and a collector of photographs, he is also the creative director of the KesselsKramer international communication agency, based in Amsterdam. For more than fifteen years now, this fascinating and influential individual has applied his talent and his inventiveness to the mission of finding beauty in the commonplace, the strange, and the imperfect. The compiler of some fifty works containing amateur photographs and the editor of a magazine devoted to alternative photography, he also regularly exhibits all over Europe: both his own work and that of others who break with the aesthetic of polished, retouched images – those ultimately identical images that invade our computer and smartphone screens. His new exhibition, “Fabulous Failures”, uses the walls and spaces of the Botanique to display the work of a dozen contemporary artists, including quite a few Belgians. Each in his or her own way, they embrace mistakes, serendipity and – often unexpected – oddities of everyday life in order to bring out their hidden beauty and raise them to the status of works of art. “Failure isn’t fatal – quite the contrary,” he tells us. “It’s downright fabulous.”

When did you start believing in failure?

a little bit of the character of the dog and his eyes. That is an example of something where an amateur has a blind goal and just keeps on going. It is something very nice to see. It’s humorous and at the same time, it shows the dedication of those people. I have always been fascinated by beauty when things fail.

Is that what “Fabulous Failures” is about? KESSELS: Yes. I first made a book intended for creatives, showing how to embrace failure. This exhibition is more about showing the work of artists I really like who also look for those imperfections. From all kinds of angles. Sometimes literally, sometimes as serendipity. Photographers like Matt Stuart and André Thijssen find those moments of serendipity on the streets. They document mistakes. Ruth van Beek or Annegien van Doorn just deliberately make mistakes. The Belgian artist Karel De Mulder made a mistake by fuelling his car in a petrol station and forgetting to take the nozzle out. He drove away with the thing still in, ruining the station. He was given a big fine, but he managed to get the camera footage showing what he did wrong, and made an artwork out of that. People can donate some money so he can earn – and not “learn” – from his mistakes. In that way the exhibition is quite playful.

The exhibition was first shown during the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles last summer. Are we going to see the exact same show at the Botanique? KESSELS: The setting is the same, but some of the artists have been swapped, in order to

ERIK KESSELS: Quite a while ago. It has also to do with my background. I am a graphic designer and art director. In my job, I work with a lot of images and technology allows us to approach perfection. We almost need an application to fuck up the photos we make on our phones and make them look more authentic. I have always fought against those clichéd, stereotypical, perfect images in design and advertising. Perfection is not a good starting point for developing new ideas or new work. It’s just a full stop at the end of the sentence. That triggered my interest in less perfect images. I started visiting flea markets, especially the one in Brussels, looking for amateur images in family albums. I became fascinated with those pictures, because amateurs are much more willing to make mistakes. They don’t care so much about technique; they have a different goal, in a way. Sometimes I find very special stories. For instance, I once found an album in which a family was trying to photograph their black dog as if they were trying to solve one of the biggest mysteries in photography. They tried it repeatedly. That shows their love for the dog but also their failure, because the black dog is a big black mop in the images. But then there’s one image where they really start to overexpose the film and then you see that everything is bleached out, but at least you see

“You see more images before lunch than somebody in the 18th century saw in their entire life” artist David Helbich are almost artistic sculptures. They are often beautiful. In Belgium there is also a kind of absurdity that is sometimes embraced. I remember the party that was organised to celebrate 500 days of Belgium having no government [in 2011 – SOS]. Self-irony in Belgium is something very good and I think very nice too. We have that in Holland too, but a lot of countries don’t have it.

You have been publishing and exhibiting pictures showing imperfections for quite a long time now. Have you seen changes in the way your work has been received over that time? ▲

highlight the work of Belgian artists. I have been following some of them for a long time: Dries Segers, Sarah Carlier, and David Helbich, for example. Also Leo Gabin, a trio of artists from Ghent. I think they are very good. In their videos, they play with the stupidity and the stereotypical behaviour of people on the Internet doing make-up tutorials. You have girls who are showing online how perfect they are. So here, in a way, we show the perfection

but after a while it becomes really sickening and in the end it has the opposite effect.

In Belgium we are quite specialised in failures, especially ones related to construction works. It has become a source of national pride. We like to laugh about it, but it inspires us a lot too. KESSELS: Sure, you could do the whole exhibi-

tion with artists from Belgium! I think those construction failures highlighted by the Belgian

KESSELS: I was quite surprised in the beginning that there was so much attention and it has increased over the years. But I think it also has to do with the fact that the imperfections you find in family albums and analogue photographs are very appealing to people. When you reach the point where everything is perfect, you start to look for something else. Wide Vercnocke FAILURE SUPERHEROES Technology, retouching software, and hi-tech filters are close to making us forget that to err is human and that without imperfection, there is no charm. Happily, the “Fabulous Failures” exhibition dreamt up by Erik Kessels is there to put us back on the right track. One of the dozen artists on show, Annegien van Doorn from the Netherlands, makes humorous videos bordering on the absurd that focus on everyday objects, such as a tube of toothpaste, that we rarely take the trouble to really look at. In a similar vein, the Swiss-Danish duo PUTPUT transforms household utensils such as a common or garden sponge into highly aesthetic objets d’art. In the domain of error, Barry van der Rijt from the Netherlands has come up with a DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) applied to anomalies in the field of digital film. Kurt Caviezel from Switzerland collects images from webcams on which we can see surprising situations such as the visits of birds and insects, which give them a surreal character. Kent Rogowski from New York manipulates mass-produced objects such as jigsaw puzzles and teddy bears to transform them into highly personal works of art. Matt Stuart from London has made a name for himself by photographing amusing and comical situations in the streets, while Brussels-based David Helbich has become a huge hit on Facebook with his hilarious “Belgian solutions”, a homage to the absurd stopgaps one comes across in our urban landscape.

That’s also the reason why people enjoy going to flea markets, like the one in the centre of Brussels. Do you often visit it? KESSELS: Now I go every few months maybe, but I used to go more often. I used to go there sometimes the night before and sleep in a hotel on the square, so I could be on there at 6.30–7.00 am, when it was still dark. I found a lot of things there. Berlin, Lisbon, and Madrid are cities that have quite good markets too, but in Brussels I was also really amazed by how many personal belongings you find. A lot of those fellows on the market empty the houses of people who have died and had no relatives any more. One day, all their belongings, including their letters, banknotes, medical records, X-rays, everything, end up on the market. Unbelievable. In Holland you wouldn’t find that so easily.

Those photographic prints you find have lived a long life before ending up on the flea market. Especially compared to today’s digital pictures that we post on the Internet. KESSELS: Yes. The life cycle of an image has totally changed. We live in the Renaissance of imagery, meaning that you see more images before lunch than somebody in the eighteenth century saw in their entire life. The pictures that we make today are not there to keep any more or to collect: they are just there to share very quickly in a few hours. But I am also very positive about those technologies, because they imply a democratisation of photography and design. Everybody can achieve a certain result in a simple way. The thing is that, metaphorically, people are only in the front garden of their houses. The front garden is where you show the end result. A lot of people never go to their back garden, where there’s a mess, where you can make mistakes and nobody sees them, and from them, you can find an idea and end up bringing it to the front garden.

“Fabulous Failures” is an incitement to embrace failure ourselves. What advice would you give our readers, to open their minds to those wonderful mistakes? KESSELS: To learn to see them, you first need to

make them a little bit. We have those navigation systems that bring us exactly where we want to be. But if we deliberately go the wrong way, it gets really crazy. If you go on, it suddenly gives up and then maybe you find something you haven’t seen before: you end up in a village, you have to ask somebody your way; maybe you get to meet somebody nice. Sometimes it’s good to think in the wrong direction.

adine Monfils nous avait donné rendez-vous au fond d’une impasse bruxelloise. Elle y était invitée avec quelques potes, des gratte-papiers qui, comme elle, sèment les macchabées au fil des pages. Il fallait annoncer un festival du Polar, dont elle est la marraine. Une quarantaine de romans à son actif, des polars pour la plupart, Nadine Monfils a le profil idéal pour le job. D’autant plus que ses bouquins qui collectionnent les personnages sérieusement « skettés » et les rebondissements à la chaîne suintent la belgitude par tous les bas de page, même quand ils se passent en dehors des frontières noir-jaune-rouge. Le plus étonnant, c’est que la raconteuse, elle crèche à Montmartre depuis plusieurs années. Sans doute pour mieux chérir et fantasmer Bruxelles, la ville de son cœur où elle revient souvent. « Quand on habite dans deux endroits séparés, on apprécie toujours mieux l’absent. Ma grand-mère était bruxelloise. J’ai connu Bruxelles toute petite, c’était le Bruxelles de Brel. Quand je reviens, je ne manque pas d’aller boire une bière chez Lynn et Willy, place du Jeu de Balle, là bat encore le cœur de Bruxelles. » On est chez Toone et il y a ses complices du jour, Lou Deprijck, José Géal et Freddy Bozzo du BIFFF et même Yvan Mayeur. Si elle est tout sourire, c’est parce qu’elle fête la sortie de son dernier bouquin Ice-cream et châtiments qui met en scène Elvis Cadillac, le sosie belge du King, qui doit se coltiner quelques cadavres et une belle bande de tapés du bocal. Autant se dire qu’on ne s’ennuie pas une seconde dans cet univers où le burlesque et le trash sont voisins de comptoir. « Tant qu’on ne s’emmerde pas, on ne pense pas à la mort. » glisse-t-elle avec son sourire malicieux. « Les gens sans surprise, ils m’emmerdent. Quand je tombe dessus dans la vie, je me casse. Et dans mes romans, je les tue. » C’est ce que doit penser aussi un client de l’estaminet qui après vérification que la dernière goutte de pils est bien passée dans son gosier, murmure, juste pour lui-même : « Oué, on rigole, sinon ça va barder ! »

qu’elle préfère, ce sont les Marolles. « J’ai toujours cru aux signes qui se répètent dans la vie. Mon fils a fait ses études à l’Athénée Robert Catteau et c’est Place du Jeu de Balle qu’un libraire m’a sauvé la vie quand j’étais au fond du trou. Il m’a payé un café et m’a permis de sortir la tête de l’eau. » Et c’est tout naturellement qu’elle a domicilié Elvis Cadillac à la rue du Chevreuil, celle des Bains de Bruxelles. « C’est une rue que j’aime bien parce qu’elle est ‘schieve’. Et puis, il y a un brocanteur qui avait un jour mis en vitrine des trucs bizarres dans des bocaux, comme au musée Spitzner. Tout ce que j’adore. Je n’aime pas ce qui est rectiligne. J’adore les défauts chez les gens. Ça les rend humains. Les maisons, c’est pareil. » Plus que les rues et les maisons, ce qui touche Nadine Monfils, ce sont les gens, parfois à côté de la plaque mais toujours vrais, à l’image des personnages qui habitent ses romans. Et les gens, il y en a partout. Comme cet homme avec un short et un chapeau qui promène son chien. Nadine, qui aime sa dégaine, va lui causer. Il a appelé son toutou Sarko, parce qu’il est petit et nerveux. « C’est le genre d’humour et de surprises que j’aime chez les gens. » Comme dans ses bouquins qu’elle truffe de notes de bas de page pour expliquer aux Non-Belges ce que sont les spéculoos, les cuberdons, les gosettes et les homes, elle peut à l’occasion jouer les guides quand une bizarrerie la fait sourire. En passant, à côté de l’église Saint-Nicolas, elle nous fait remarquer que, comme

elle est construite sur un angle, son chœur n’est pas dans l’axe de la nef et qu’elle abrite une châsse avec une poignée d’ossements des martyrs de Gorcum. À la Bourse, elle souligne l’intérêt qu’elle porte au Piétonnier. « C’est difficile au début, les gens doivent se l’approprier. Une fois que le cap sera passé, ils ne pourront plus s’en passer. » Devant une ambulance hésitante qui débouche de la rue Orts, elle lève les bras. « Écrasée par une ambulance, ce serait une belle fin et une belle photo, non ? » Devant notre peu d’enthousiasme, elle continue avec nous vers la rue Dansaert. De la porte ouverte de l’Archiduc diffuse déjà la lumière particulière aux lieux de nuit, chaude avec un discret effluve de vice. Elle y a passé quelques soirées et nuits pas piquées des vers avec son ami Arno. « Un soir, je lui avais écrit une chanson qu’il a glissée dans la fente d’un fauteuil et puis l’a oubliée. C’est là que tu penses à la fille devenue clocharde qui entend son hit passer à la radio » lance-t-elle dans un éclat de rire. Place du Jardin aux Fleurs, on lui montre l’Atelier Coppens où elle sera gardée à vue pour trois jours, le temps du festival. Les polars, elle s’y sent comme chez elle. Mais à sa sauce, c’est une préparation pleine de surprises qui ne ressemble à aucune autre. Ce n’est pas un hasard si dans son dernier livre, elle multiplie les allusions à l’art brut. « C’est un art où tout est permis et surtout la sincérité qui, pour moi, est la chose la plus importante avec la liberté. » On descend la rue Dansaert, les magasins branchés de stylisme ont fait place à ces snacks improbables et déserts où la lumière des néons entre en concurrence avec le vert du terrain de foot qu’on aperçoit sur un écran de télévision suspendu. On arrive au canal qui jouait un rôle important dans Les Bonbons de Bruxelles, une enquête du commissaire Léon, un autre bruxellois émigré à Montmartre. Revenu au pays, l’enquêteur tricoteur suivait la piste de vieilles lettres entassées dans une valise chinée au vieux marché. Et il courrait après les fantômes. Comme Nadine Monfils, mais les siens sont bien vivants.

Voor amusante films met een sociale inslag moet je bij Cédric Klapisch aankloppen. De Franse regisseur komt naar Brussel voor de start van een retrospectieve in Cinematek en de lancering van een nieuwe film: Ce qui nous lie. — NIELS RUËLL

et Paris (2008) herinnerde Cédric Klapisch Parijzenaars aan hun voorrecht om in een prachtige stad te wonen. Met L’auberge espagnole (2002) maakte hij Barcelona populair bij Erasmus-studenten. Vervolg Les poupées russes (2005) speelde zich in Parijs, Londen en Sint-Petersburg af, vervolg Casse-tête chinois (2013) in New York. Meneer houdt van wereldsteden. Maar verandering van spijs doet eten. Voor zijn nieuwe film zocht hij de wijngaarden van de Bourgogne op. Ce qui nous lie volgt drie jongvolwassenen die naar elkaar toe groeien terwijl ze proberen om even goed wijn te verbouwen als hun recent overleden vader. Klapisch filmde voor het eerst de natuur of het terroir in plaats van de stad en bezingt de Franse wijncultuur en het leven op het ritme van de seizoenen. De regisseur heeft zelf ook al enige jaren kunnen rijpen. Zijn eerste speelfilm dateert van 1992. Riens du tout ging over een ondernemer met een humanistische en sociale politiek. Twee jaar later lanceerde de nostalgische vriendschapskroniek Le péril jeune de carrière van zijn fetisjacteur Romain Duris. Onterecht onbemind is Un air de famille (1996), zijn verfilming van een toneelstuk van Agnès Jaoui en Jean-Pierre Bacri over de onderhuidse spanningen in een bourgeois familie die wekelijks samenkomt in een taverne. Over families is Klapisch nooit uitgeklapt geraakt. Het kantelpunt in zijn carrière komt er wanneer L’auberge espagnol verrassend veel toeschouwers naar de bioscoop lokt. Het

optimistisch-humoristische portret van zeven Erasmus-studenten uit zeven verschillende landen die samenhokken in een flat in Barcelona, raakt een gevoelige snaar en gaat vooraf aan de grote populariteit van het bekende Europese uitwisselingsproject. Latere schetsen Les poupées russes en Casse-tête chinois hoe het de generatie later in het leven vergaat. Met Ma part du gâteau (2011) wou Klapisch doen nadenken over de uitwassen van de financiële wereld en de nadelige gevolgen voor de gewone mens. Dat hij voor kaviaarsocialist wordt uitgescholden, houdt hem niet tegen.

Pendant la première partie de l’été, la Cinematek organise une rétrospective du réalisateur français qui s’est fait un nom avec L’Auberge espagnole, le portrait drôle et optimiste d'étudiants Erasmus partageant un appartement à Barcelone. Les Poupées russes et Casse-tête chinois, les deuxième et troisième volets de la saga, sont aussi au programme ainsi que la chronique nostalgique sur l’amitié Le Péril jeune qui a lancé la carrière de son acteur fétiche Romain Duris, sans oublier son nouveau film Ce qui nous lie dans lequel il chante les louanges de la campagne plutôt que de la ville. It is not particularly surprising that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a prominent theme in Palestinian films. But why should they always be about politics and violence or the situation in Gaza or the West Bank? The Palestinian Maysaloun Hamoud wants a change, so she tells a story about three young Palestinian women who share a flat in Jaffa, the old district on the edge of the metropolis Tel Aviv. Do not be shocked to discover as a (young) urbanite that their lives – dancing, drinking, smoking, working, studying, and going out again – seem very familiar. The only difference is that the progressive lawyer Leila, the rebellious lesbian DJ Salma, and the devout, veiled IT student Noor have to struggle more for their freedom and self-determination, and are forced to hide their lifestyles from their conservative families outside the city. It is easier when they conspire together despite their differences. Good performances from the cast make it easy to identify and sympathise with the characters. Hamoud makes sure that the film stays light and entertaining, but unfortunately she has not broken free from preconceived plans and the film thus lacks some sparkle and rock-’n-roll. But these are mere details. On the whole, Bar Bahar feels great. (NR)

L’Amant double s’inspire de Lives of the Twins de l’exceptionnelle écrivaine américaine Joyce Carol Oates, affirme son admiration pour Hitchcock et De Palma (Sisters !) et reconnaît sa parenté avec Dead Ringers de David Cronenberg. Reste que le dernier François Ozon ne pouvait pas être plus Ozon : stylé, osé et provocant tout en étant de bon goût. Espiègle et humoristique sont les mots magiques qui permettront de dépasser le grotesque avec lequel ce thriller flirte par moments. Une jeune femme fragile (une ravissante et délicieusement mystérieuse Marine Vacth) souffrant de crampes au ventre inexplicables entame une relation amoureuse avec son psychanalyste et ensuite avec son jumeau secret et potentiellement nuisible. Visiblement, Jérémie Renier s’amuse dans ce double rôle ainsi que dans les nombreuses scènes de nu. Attendez-vous à des histoires de jumeaux cannibales, de psychothérapies inquiétantes, de désirs profonds inexprimés ainsi qu’à un éventail de fantasmes sexuels et plus de jeux de miroirs qu’au palais des miroirs. Mais la vérité importe sans doute moins que le fait qu’Ozon se lâche complètement d’un point de vue stylistique et que le spectateur est forcé dans le rôle actif d’un voyeur. La première minute du film ne s'est pas écoulée que vous avez déjà vu un vagin se transformer en œil. (NR)

De Palestijnse Maysaloun Hamoud vindt terecht van niet en vertelt over de levens van drie jonge Palestijnse vrouwen die een flat delen in Jaffa. Heel herkenbare levens, alleen moeten de drie iets harder voor hun vrijheid strijden en hun levensstijl verbergen voor de conservatieve familie. De sympathieke film mist soms wat bruis of rock-’n-roll, maar dat is detailkritiek. Bar bahar doet deugd.

Le conflit avec Israël est une règle dans le cinéma palestinien. Mais doit-on pour autant toujours traiter de politique et de violence ? Maysaloun Hamoud trouve que non et livre le récit de trois jeunes Palestiniennes qui partagent un appartement à Jaffa. Des vies auxquelles il est facile de s’identifier, si ce n’est qu’elles doivent davantage se battre pour leur liberté et cacher leur style de vie devant leur famille conservatrice. Ce film sympathique manque parfois de rock’n’roll, mais c’est un détail. Bar Bahar fait du bien.

After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the young Soviet state needed a new language. The Russian avant-garde became one of the most creative and influential art movements. — HELEEN RODIERS

E

xactly one hundred years after the Russian Revolution, one of the most important events of the 20th century, ADAM is organising an exhibition devoted to Soviet Russian graphic design. Original posters, magazines, and book covers adorn the walls or are shown in minimalist display cases. Influenced by the many “isms” in Europe (Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism), Russian artists devised their very own “ism”. Constructivism or Russian avant-garde declared every other art form to be dead, and that the only worthwhile activity was the production of objects and buildings. Many of their designs remained dreams on paper; graphic design was the only thing to really take off. The daring typography, photo montages, and their bold use of colour were perfect tools to efficiently promote the new Soviet state. The most important Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko was noted for a book cover for There and Back Again by Vladimir Mayakovsky. The cover is a classic example of constructivist graphic design, including arrows as graphic elements, strongly contrasting colours, and the use of different font sizes. The 1924 poster that Rodchenko designed for the Leningrad State Publishing House to encourage people to visit libraries so they would learn to read and write, is an eye-catcher.

Almost literally: a woman screams the written word through a megaphone. The primary colours of red, blue, and green reinforce the message. Rodchenko was not only innovative as a graphic artist, his photography with unusual perspectives and refined graphic forms also broke with the past and with tradition. The book covers by Lazar Markovich Lissitzky, known as El Lissitzky, are also striking. He not only had a profound influence on Bauhaus, but his production techniques and style also dominated graphic design throughout the 20th century. Russian avant-garde was a style guide for numerous arts, including graphic design, abstraction, pop art, and much more. That alone makes a detour to ADAM absolutely worth it. The beautifully preserved magazines and posters are also a plus.

a cuisine péruvienne déferle sur le monde. Pas une grande capitale, de Londres à Madrid, qui ne lui réserve l’accueil qu’elle mérite. Bruxelles fait d’ailleurs office de parent pauvre : jusqu’ici, seule une cantine, King Kong, à Saint-Gilles, défendait avec talent l’explosion de saveurs qui caractérise les préparations de cette partie du monde. Désormais, une seconde adresse vient compléter l’offre. Son nom ? La Cevicheria. On la doit à deux sœurs qui ont lancé la formule avec succès à Paris. Le principe ? Comme son nom le laisse présager, il est essentiellement axé sur les ceviches et tiraditos, deux spécialités basées sur le poisson cru. Plutôt que de suivre aveuglément la cuisine péruvienne, l’enseigne s’amuse à réinventer le genre. On a pu en faire l’expérience le temps d’un repas du soir placé sous le signe de la chaleur. C’est en terrasse que l’on a donc testé l’adresse – un coup d’œil sur l’intérieur a révélé un décor qui vaut le détour, entre mobilier chiné, bar semi-circulaire et pan de mur d’un vert éclatant. Dès l’arrivée, on pointe un personnel bien décidé à débiter du ceviche. La consigne appliquée rappelle les États-Unis où les serveurs poussent les consommateurs… à consommer. C’est dommage, surtout lorsque l’on vous vend une assiette guacamole et tortillas (8 euros) beaucoup trop froide pour que l’on puisse goûter quoi que ce soit et que quelques minutes plus tard on vous la retire en raison d’une table exiguë n’ayant pas la place pour accueillir le reste des plats. Heureusement, ce mauvais départ est compensé par trois préparations qui prouvent du talent : un tiradito de thon gingembre (15 euros), un poulpe kalamata (16 euros) et

un autre tiradito, du bar au combawa (16 euros). Chacune des assiettes décoiffe les papilles en raison d’une avalanche d’ingrédients : grenade, citron vert, coriandre, piments, oignons rouges… C’est d’une fraîcheur absolue. On voyage en restant sur place. Hélas, à chaque fois, une erreur grossière empêche que l’on adhère totalement. Ainsi des cinq pauvres lamelles de courgettes que l’on vous vend chaudement sous l’intitulé de « ceviche de courgettes jaunes ». Pour 7 euros, c’est clairement de l’arnaque.

Na King Kong is er een tweede plek in Brussel die de Peruviaanse keuken een warm hart toedraagt. La Cevicheria, een succesformule die komt overgevlogen uit Parijs, draait in essentie rond de ceviche en tiradito, twee specialiteiten gebaseerd op rauwe vis, die het met veel plezier opnieuw probeert uit te vinden. Met wisselend succes: ons bord guacamole en tortilla’s (€8) bleek veel te koud, terwijl onze tiradito’s en inktvis met kalamata-olijven (€16) dan weer onze smaakpapillen van hun stuk brachten met een lawine aan frisse smaken. Maar de te opdringerige bediening en de te veelvuldige lompe fouten verhinderden dat we ons helemaal konden vinden in de plek. NL

King Kong is no longer the only place in town for Peruvian cuisine. La Cevicheria, which was launched successfully in Paris, focuses mainly on ceviche and tiradito, both made with raw fish. It has fun with the genre, reinventing it, but with mixed results. Following a plate of guacamole and tortillas (€8) served so cold we couldn’t taste it, three dishes showed talent: tuna and ginger tiradito (€15), octopus with Kalamata olives (€16), and another tiradito, with kaffir lime (€16). Each was perfectly fresh, wowing our taste buds. Sadly, at every turn, our enjoyment was limited by some glaring and overpriced blunder – and over-hurried service. EN

The theatre season is coming to an end, but the KVS is running ahead and kick-starting a project that will only be programmed at the beginning of next season. The try-out of MAPping Brussels promises to be a far-reaching exploration of the artistic circuits in and around Brussels. Along with the inter-municipal network Mestizo Arts Platform, the KVS is looking for artists from various disciplines who work in the city but may also be able to share something in the theatre. The lab, comprising fifteen researchers including Pitcho, Omar Semati, Benjamin Vandewalle, Junior Mthombeni, Nadia El Mahi, and Isabel Burr Raty, is welcoming its first visitors this weekend. EN

We willen een record aantal porties mosselen-friet opdienen aan de buurtbewoners met laag inkomen, tegen de symbolische prijs van 1€. U kunt actief deelnemen aan deze actie door een euro extra te betalen bij de afrekening in één van de deelnemende restaurants of een supplement te betalen wanneer u online een portie mosselen-friet bestelt. De giften zullen integraal worden besteed aan het uitdelen van de maaltijden. Aarzel niet om zelf ook te komen genieten van het feest op 21 juli, van 17 tot 22 uur.

Ils intéressent aussi les artistes Romain Marula et Ivan Murit, alias IVRO, qui ont placé au centre de leur installation Impersonate deux chatbots en grande conversation. Pour rendre ce dialogue plus imagé, les artistes ont configuré les bots pour qu’ils se donnent la réplique via de courts extraits de vidéos YouTube, sélectionnés sur base du sous-titre le plus adéquat. Et c’est évidemment quand ils ne trouvent pas exactement ce qu’ils cherchent que ça devient intéressant. FR
