Bruxelles dans l’œil d’un photographe bruxellois

« ‘Tu dois photographier l’âme de Bruxelles’, m’a-t-on écrit. J’aime le mot ‘âme’, et lorsque j’y pense, je vois rouge, je vois sang, je pense vivant et j’imagine ce qui est contenu et qui anime. Un jeu entre le dehors et le dedans, l’invisible et la chair. Dans un train qui me ramène à Bruxelles, je tire les rideaux. La lumière filtrée traverse le tissu rouge. Arrêt à la gare du Nord, je suis désormais seule dans le wagon, je photographie la percée de lumière et je devine alors quel sera mon fil pour cette commande. Rouge. Si l’âme des villes a une couleur, c’est celle-ci. Je pourrais certainement hésiter avec le noir, mais concernant Bruxelles, ce sera rouge, définitivement rouge. » FR

Sandrine Lopez (1982, France) approche par la photographie et la vidéo ses obsessions, ses peurs et ses fascinations les plus profondes. Après un premier livre Moshé, elle expose sa nouvelle série hallucinée Arkhê au Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi, à partir du 28 septembre.

A PIANIST IN A CLOUD

Alex Koo Derudder says that his apartment in the European Quarter of Brussels is the third place where he has put together the same wooden construction. “It was a crazy idea to sacrifice our living room for it, but at least we can now make music continuously night and day without disturbing anybody,” the 29-year-old pianist with roots in Waregem and Japan says enthusiastically about his piano hut. He found the idea for the “mobile” practice cabin, which with a few cleverly placed microphones doubles as a studio, on a Dutch website for classified ads. It was very handy, given that over the past decade his career has taken him from the conservatories of The Hague and Amsterdam to Copenhagen, New York, and ultimately Brussels.

This somewhat unconventional trajectory is also one of the reasons why he is not better known here, despite his talent and the four-star review for his latest album Appleblueseagreen in the leading American jazz magazine DownBeat. An autumn tour during which he will present that album and other new work with his Belgian trio – including bassist Lennart Heyndels and “AFTER TWO SONGS, drummer Dré Pallemaerts – is WE HAVE TO OPEN intended to change all that.

THE DOOR FOR With an extra guest musician SOME AIR” on winds at each show (at Flagey, it will be trumpet player Jean-Paul Estiévenart), they will breathe new life into the album that the pianist recorded with saxophonist Mark Turner and trumpet player Ralph Alessi as the apotheosis of his Master’s programme in New York. “I first took private classes with them. We quickly became friends and rather than giving me instructions, we would play duos together. After my last class, I asked them why we didn’t try it as a trio.” The album’s title, Appleblueseagreen, is the literal translation of a Flemish term. “The fact that the colour is not really defined – some people think it is closer to turquoise, while others say it is more cyan – fits well with the record, about which listeners also have different opinions. Some people think it is quite sad, but other people hear a range of moods.”

The upcoming performances will be a challenge because each one will be played with a different accompaniment.

“With Mark and Ralph I had a supporting role, and I was responsible for the rhythm, basses, and harmony. Now, with bass and drums, I have more freedom.” That freedom has always been very important to Koo, who was seventeen when he made the definitive switch from promising classical orchestra pianist to jazz musician. “In the past, it was all about being the best and the Queen Elisabeth Competition was the biggest goal. I couldn’t care less about those things anymore. Music shouldn’t be forced. To me, composition is impulsive. It happens in a cloud.” A day after our visit, the four of them are going to rehearse in the wooden cube, the cloud that he has created at home.

Nee, 21 september 1979 is niet het eerste evenement dat in dat doolhof tussen de Anspachlaan en de Steenstraat plaatsvindt. In de belle époque laven bezoekers zich in wat eerst VIEUX DÜSSELDORF en dan Bruxelles-Kermesse heet al aan variété-avonden, wat later passeren er acrobaten en goochelaars. En Josephine Baker, de Beyoncé van haar tijd.

In 1931 koopt de jonge Luikse man-met-een-plan GEORGES MATHONET het pand op.

Hij maakt er de Ancienne Belgique van, opent onder de noemer Oud België soortgelijke etablissementen in Gent en Antwerpen en laat er de musichall bloeien, een soort bonte avonden met komische sketches, circusnummers, jonge leeuwen – jazeker, die katachtige dieren – en een halve en een hele muzikale vedette.

Er wordt ruimte gemaakt voor extra stoelen en tafels, op de bühne passeren de monstres sacrés van het Franse chanson genre Georges Brassens, Édith Piaf en Jacques Brel. Ook Vlaamse cowboy BOBBEJAAN SCHOEPEN toont er meermaals zijn magische gefluit.

Johnny Hallyday en Claude François brengen de yéyé naar Brussel. Terwijl hij geniet van zijn dure cola, ziet de vijftienjarige Marc Didden er begin jaren 1960 een hond zijn naam schrijven, maar vooral ook The Shadows hun gitaarchoreografieën opvoeren.

“Voor het eerst in mijn leven besefte ik hoe wonderlijk het is om een bewonderde artiest live mee te maken,” zegt hij daar vijftig jaar later over.

Sinatra krijgt overhandigd: ‘My way’, een cover van zijn nummer ‘Comme d’habitude’.

Na de gruwelijke ramp in de Innovation in 1967 zijn de regels voor brandveiligheid strenger geworden. Mathonet moet renoveren, maar de kosten lopen op. Bovendien vindt hij geen aansluiting bij het opkomende Engelstalige rockgeweld. In 1971 moet hij de boeken toedoen. Het gebouw raakt onderkomen, maar concertorganisator PAUL ‘BOOGIE BOY’ AMBACH ziet er een kleiner alternatief in voor het grote Vorst Nationaal. Hij krijgt er onder meer Leonard Cohen, Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed, Kraftwerk en The Clash op het podium.

De zaal is nu helemaal een zootje, het dak lekt, door het plafond kan je de hemel zien. Er moet iets gebeuren. Het gebouw wordt beheerd door de Nationale Maatschappij voor Krediet aan de Nijverheid, en wordt samen met de Botanique aan zowel de Franse als Nederlandse cultuurgemeenschappen aangeboden. “VIC ANCIAUX , die toen staatssecretaris van Brusselse zaken en Vlaamse Cultuur was, heeft dat slim gespeeld,” vertelt huidig artistiek directeur Kurt Overbergh. “Hij zei dat ze op de Botanique mikten, waarna de Franstalige gemeenschap in een kramp schoot en dáár achteraan ging. De Vlaamse gemeenschap heeft zo in 1979 een huis gekocht dat rot was en een Franstalige naam had, maar wél in het hart van de stad.”

Op 16 juni 1978 mag SUICIDE de fans van Elvis Costello opwarmen. Die vinden de rauwe, minimale synthpunk van het New Yorkse duo maar niks. Bierglazen vliegen richting podium, de micro van zanger Alan Vega wordt gepikt. Onthutst over de ontvangst van zijn voorprogramma speelt angry young man Costello een ultrakorte set. Het publiek is nu nog bozer, alles moet kapot, het balkon gaat in de fik, de politie

Iconische namen houden halt in Brussel, zoals de fluwelen ijsprinses Nico, folkchanteuse Joni Mitchell, spirituele jazzer DON CHERRY en jazzfolkie John Martyn. Met The Cure en U2 mag ook jong talent zijn sprong in het diepe wagen. Arbeid Adelt en TC Matic vertalen Belgisch surrealisme naar de bühne.

De centrale ligging brengt een nieuw probleem met

zich mee: de buren luisteren (met tegenzin) mee. De boel moet dringend soundproof gemaakt worden. In 1982 gaat de AB een jaar dicht. Op 23 december 1983 mag URBAN SAX de vernieuwde zaal leven inblazen, naar beneden bungelend van de gevels.

De renovatiewerken zijn een maat voor niets, de geluidsoverlast blijft. Dure advocaten hangen als bloedhonden boven de hoofden van de organisatie. Er wordt gemikt op rustiger vertier: dansproducties van WIM VANDEKEYBUS , theaterstukken van Needcompany en de dan opkomende wereldmuziek, met name van Cheb Mami, Khaled en Salif Keita. Qawwali-zanger Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan treedt zelfs onversterkt op.

Op 17 februari van dat jaar zakt een pikant zootje ongeregeld af naar Brussel met enkel een kous rond zijn snikkel: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS heten ze, en de funk is hun religie. Bassist Flea krijgt het heet en steekt een microfoon in zijn reet. ‘The Flea’ wordt, nu ja, proper opgeborgen en telkens bovengehaald wanneer een artiest de diva uithangt.

Op een frisse oktoberdag in 1989 neemt een jonge New Yorker met dreadlocks de tram naar de AB. Hij heeft enkele songs in de binnenzak van zijn hippiejasje en een akoestische gitaar rond zijn bast, en mag een inderhaast beklonken voorprogramma van Joe Strummer verzorgen. Zijn naam is LENNY KRAVITZ .

In 1990 lanceert Jari Demeulemeester BOTERHAMMEN IN HET PARK , een festival dat tot vandaag rond de kiosk van het Warandepark bokes belegt met het kruim van het Nederlandstalige artiestengilde, van Jan De Wilde over wijlen Ramses Shaffy tot Bart Peeters.

Een van die Nederlandstalige zangers die de AB in vervoering brengt, is WILLEM VERMANDERE . In maart 1990 laat hij er drie avonden na elkaar zijn baard ontvlammen. Jari Demeulemeester vraagt hem een lied over Brussel te schrijven. De West-Vlaming laat ‘Bange blankeman’ uit zijn pen rollen. Wanneer hij na de Zwarte Zondag van 1991 opnieuw naar Brussel afzakt, drukt de AB de tekst af op de achtergebleven verkiezingsaffiches. Bij de volgende 11 juli-viering op de Brusselse Grote Markt bekogelen bange Vlaams Blok-militanten Vermandere met rotzooi.

31 oktober 1991: fans van DAVID BOWIE liggen van zes uur ’s ochtends aan de deur van de AB. Het Britse popwonder brengt zijn godin Iman mee en het iets minder goddelijke Tin Machine.

Na het concert van Youssou N’Dour op 28 juli 1992 sluit de AB de deuren voor een grondige renovatie. Kleine concerten vinden plaats boven café Falstaff, onder meer Townes Van Zandt vindt er zijn weg naartoe.

Vier jaar later is SINTERKLAAS gul: op 6 december gooit de nieuwe AB zijn deuren open. De aanpalende panden zijn opgekocht, de hoofdingang is verplaatst van de Steenstraat naar de Anspachlaan. De Club is erbij gekomen. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat mensen sneller lachen in rode ruimten, en dus kleurt de hele AB rood. Het gebouw beschikt nu ook over een eigen opnamestudio. Via deze studio kan de muziek uit de concertzaal rechtstreeks de wereld rond via radio, tv of internet. De AB is eindelijk de topconcertzaal die Jari Demeulemeester voor ogen had: ze kan concurreren met de beste clubs ter wereld.

Will Tura werkt af en toe samen met de Franse componist Daniel Bangalter.

Bangalter is de vader van Thomas Bangalter, één helft van French house-pioniers DAFT PUNK . Will Tura is erbij wanneer het duo soundcheckt voor zijn set op 4 oktober 1997 in de AB. Het tweetal vergeet zijn helmen op te zetten. Da funk!

De 27-jarige KURT OVERBERGH wordt in 1997

de nieuwe programmator. Na succesvolle concerten van Einstürzende Neubauten en Rubén González voelt hij zich “een programmator van wereldformaat.

Om dan meteen daarna op mijn bek te gaan met Smoke City, dat groepje van ‘Underwater love’. Zo

“Uw dwarse muzikale hoogmis die de vinger aan de pols houdt van wat er beweegt in de marge van de popmuziek,” luidt de slagzin van het DOMINO -festival dat Kurt Overbergh op poten zet in het voorjaar van 1999. “Dat verwees naar de dominoblokjes waar ik als kind mee speelde. Het ene blokje zet het andere in gang. We wilden een beetje de toekomst voorspellen. Dat kan natuurlijk niet, maar we hebben wel onder meer Sigur Rós, Emilíana Torrini en LCD Soundsystem een podium gegeven voor ze doorbraken.”

Eind jaren 1980 had de AB Brussel al laten kennismaken met de hiphop, onder meer dankzij Public Enemy, Beastie Boys en De La Soul. Op 10 juni 1997 zetten de grootvorsten van de rap WU-TANG CLAN voet aan wal in de AB. De oesterzwammen die kokkin Lut De Clercq heeft klaargemaakt, lusten ze niet, ze vermoeden dat er afluisterapparatuur in de lepels zit verstopt en gebruiken de bestelde pizza’s als frisbees. In de zaal raken de fans oververhit. “Method Man klom het balkon op om een fan die een fles had gegooid een pak rammel te verkopen,” herinnert LeFtO zich.

“Ondertussen zaten die gasten met samoeraizwaarden te zwaaien op het podium. Intens concert.”

De AB zet de millenniumgekte een hak en begint al af te tellen op 18 december 1999

met een totaalspektakel in de Grote Zaal, Club, Foyer én Agora.

Stephen en David Dewaele tellen mee, eerst als Soulwax en daarna als THE FLYING DEWAELE BROTHERS . Everybody wants to be the dj.

3 december 2001: Meg en Jack White doen met hun naar oude juke joints geurende bluesrockduo THE WHITE STRIPES de AB Club dampen. Het concert wordt het nieuwe Nirvana-inde-Democrazy-moment: achteraf was iederéén er die avond bij.

Ook THE STROKES geven de gitaarrock – en gelukkig ook de nu-metal – een flinke schop in de cojones. De New Yorkse jonkies komen op 26 februari 2002 hun debuut Is this it voorstellen in Brussel. Meisjes vliegen Julian Casablancas om de hals, de zanger behoudt zijn cool.

Er hangt elektriciteit in de lucht, gitaren zijn de shit.

Een gure avond in november 2003. ‘The Southern Strokes’, drie piepjonge broers en één neef, showen in de ABBox hun olifantenpijpen en seventiesgitaren. Het is rauw, wild en gevaarlijk. Zanger Caleb Followill daagt een fan uit om een robbertje te vechten. Een jaar later komt KINGS OF LEON terug naar de AB om er zijn live-ep Day old Belgian blues op te nemen. Een paar hits en een transformatie in posterboys van de rock later moeten ze vechten tegen duivenstront, maar headlinen ze de grootste festivals ter wereld.

De Turkse protestzangeres SELDA lokt niet alleen hipsters, maar vooral ook de Turkse gemeenschap naar de AB. “Dat was een magisch moment,” zegt Kurt Overbergh. “Omdat we dat publiek doorgaans niet bereiken. Een halfuur ver in de set stopte Selda met zingen, waarna het publiek de zang overnam. Een van de grote kippenvelmomenten uit mijn carrière.”

“Ooit word ik hier directeur,” toetert Gorik van Oudheusden in interviews. Tot dan mag hij blijven rappen in de AB. Met zijn Brusselse hiphopcrew Stikstof. Maar vooral als ZWANGERE GUY . Zijn verhaal is een van de mooiste uit de AB-geschiedenis: een Brussels straatjoch met een moeilijke jeugd belandt als afwasser in de catacomben van de AB. Hij knokt zich een weg naar boven en op 27 en 28 maart van dit jaar verkoopt hij de grote zaal twee keer uit. “Ik was er niet bij omdat ik net papa was geworden,” vertelt Kurt Overbergh. “Maar toen ik Gorik via de livestream door die grote poort achteraan op het podium, waar hij jarenlang

We moeten aansluiting bij deze stad blijven zoeken, die constant in verandering is. We mogen nooit in slaap vallen, want sleep is a cousin of death, zoals Nas dat zo mooi weet te rappen.”

Pascal Dusapin s’enfonce dans les profondeurs de MacBeth

Non, il n’est pas du tout pessimiste. « C’est trop passif pour moi », rit Pascal Dusapin. « Cependant, mes aspirations à changer le monde avec mon art sont plutôt modestes. Mais elles sont là. » 27 ans après avoir accueilli la création du premier opéra du compositeur français, la Monnaie inaugure la saison avec sa version noire de MacBeth. ruxelles et Pascal Dusapin (°1955) entretiennent une relation intense et particulière. Sous la direction de Gérard Mortier, le Français a eu l’occasion de créer son premier opéra Medeamaterial à la Monnaie en 1992. En 2010, il a été repris dans une production chorégraphiée par Sasha Waltz. Trois ans plus tard, suit O Mensch ! un cycle de lieder basé sur des textes de Friedrich Nietzsche.

En 2015, il crée Penthesilea, entre-temps son septième opéra, qui raconte l’histoire tragique de l’éponyme reine des Amazones pendant la guerre de Troie. Quiconque a vu cette production se souviendra de la noirceur oppressante de l’histoire et de la scénographie. Dans la partition, Dusapin reprend une citation de l’écrivaine allemande Christa Wolf : « Ce n’est pas un beau spectacle, l’ère moderne commence ». Et l’histoire de MacBeth, de Shakespeare à l’origine, n’est pas exactement matière à faire rire. Pour esquisser rapidement l’intrigue : le loyal général MacBeth se voit prédire par trois sorcières qu’il sera le prochain roi d’Écosse.

Seul problème : le roi Duncan est assis sur le trône et en parfaite santé. MacBeth, aveuglé par la soif de pouvoir, tue le roi et déclenche une série d’événements qui se termineront par un bain de sang. L’histoire originale est

une critique acerbe des mécanismes du pouvoir, et combien l’homme vaniteux est sensible à un soupir d’attention et de gloire.

Il semble donc qu’il n’y ait en substance qu’un petit pas entre Penthesilea et MacBeth.

Dusapin est d’accord : « Il y a bien un lien.

Lorsque j’ai composé Penthesilea en 2012-2014, je savais que mon prochain opéra serait une métaphore du monde actuel. Il suffit d’ouvrir le journal pour se rendre compte dans quel monde complexe et explosif nous vivons. Il y a la folie de ceux au pouvoir qui pensent qu’ils peuvent tout se permettre, les manipulations, les magouilles, les fake news, le non-droit et toute la misère que tout cela cause. D’une certaine manière, dans l’histoire de Shakespeare, j’ai trouvé un exemple intemporel et pertinent de ce que je voulais apporter. MacBeth et sa femme passent en revue les cadavres, ils manipulent et ont recours à toutes les méthodes possibles pour atteindre leur but. »

exprime aussi clairement que ce n’est pas l’histoire « classique » que le public verra, comme dans les versions de Richard Strauss et Giuseppe Verdi. J’ai demandé à Frédéric Boyer d’écrire un nouveau livret, également en anglais. Nous avons travaillé dur ensemble et nous nous sommes concentrés sur les femmes de la pièce – les épouses des protagonistes, en d’autres termes. En plus d’être traducteur et écrivain, Frédéric est aussi un expert de l’œuvre de Shakespeare.

C’est ce qui m’intéresse aussi: adapter des textes à ma guise et déformer des histoires.

Mais pas au point de ne plus se reconnaître en elles ni de ne plus pouvoir s’y reconnaître.

J’aime l’idée d’utiliser l’orchestre symphonique comme personnage à part entière. Ça aussi, c’est différent (Sourire).

D’où le sous-titre, Underworld ?

DUSAPIN : Je comprends ce raisonnement,

L’opéra peut-il offrir une conscience au public ?

DUSAPIN : L’opéra a quelque chose de

spécial. Ce n’est pas du tout la forme d’art décrépite et élitiste que certains voudraient nous faire croire. Au contraire : l’opéra est en effet capable de se renouveler, et de s’adresser à un public contemporain, sur des thèmes pertinents et critiques. Il s’agit d’un art visuel vivant et en constante évolution grâce au travail de compositeurs, de metteurs en scène, de librettistes, de scénographes et de musiciens novateurs.

Lorsque j’ai fait mes débuts dans les années quatre-vingt, il me semblait que l’opéra était condamné à mort, ou du moins voué à devenir une pratique digne de figurer dans un musée. On se moquait de moi quand je disais que je travaillais sur un opéra.

Aujourd’hui, le vent a complètement tourné.

un compositeur à histoires gaies ou gratuites. Dans un monde idéal, mon travail inspire la réflexion du public et puise aussi dans les émotions. C’est une question de respect pour le public, je crois. Et certainement ici à Bruxelles : c’est grâce au public de la Monnaie que je peux faire ce que j’aime faire. Les gens font l’effort de venir à l’opéra et d’écouter attentivement, ils s’y préparent, et ainsi de suite. Je dois faire quelque chose en retour. Et c’est une tâche difficile, parce que je veux utiliser mon travail pour inviter les gens à être conscients dans la vie et à se poser des questions sur certaines choses.

Parce que l’état du monde m’inquiète vraiment. Cela peut paraître pompeux, mais je considère que mon rôle – malgré le dur labeur – est plutôt modeste. L’art peut-il sauver le monde (rires) ? Je pense que oui, en faisant des opéras qui ont un sens. Je ne suis donc pas un clown qui joue un numéro, même si j’ai le plus grand respect pour les clowns ! (Sourire) »

L’enregistrement de Penthesilea avec le chœur et l’orchestre de la Monnaie vient de sortir sur le label Cyprès.

David Denil’s waking dreams

‘Fiction can elevate your work’ When the Brussels-based photographer David Denil sleepwalks through the streets of Kiev in Ukraine, it’s not so much to examine the war as its psychological effects. Rather than to document the daily lives of the inhabitants, he produces magical and powerful stories with them about the past and about the future that lies ahead. — SOPHIE SOUKIAS

’m not so interested in photography myself,” says David Denil. “I am more interested in the ideas that are explored before taking the picture.” In 2017, having just graduated from KASK (Ghent), he took a trip through eastern Europe, stopping off in Kiev, a capital city in transition and the site, in 2013 and 2014, of violent protests and clashes triggered

by President Viktor Yanukovych’s refusal to sign the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. “I understood there were a lot of psychological issues; people were not only talking about the war, they were mainly talking about the situation of the country itself, about the past and the future,” says Denil. “Ukraine became independent in 1991, which is quite recent. People are still concerned with issues about how to move on.” In the course of discussions and

encounters, the artist’s first project and book of photography began to take shape: Let Us Not Fall Asleep While Walking. The dreamlike title is borrowed from the Romantic poet, painter, and humanist from Kiev, Taras Shevchenko (“His spirit is still very strongly alive in the country.”)

Determined not to create work about the Ukrainian people but rather with them, Denil rejected the traditional documentary approach from the start, aiming for something between fiction and storytelling. “To me, if it exists, straightforward reality tells less. Fiction can elevate your work to something more understandable.”

IMPALPABLE REALITIES Profoundly inspired by painting and film (“my main interests”), he spent fifty days wandering

the streets of Kiev meeting the individuals who would become the characters in his allegorical and otherworldly pictures. “I never introduced myself as a photographer – otherwise, photography becomes the subject. It was only later that I talked about my intentions and made suggestions.” When a group of children were playing hide-and-seek, the photographer approached them and asked them to pretend to hide, not from a friend, but from a stranger whom they didn’t know. The mystery and fear conveyed by the scene are suggestive of the vast and often impalpable concept of impending war, “something we fear because we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen to us.”

When Denil came across a dog that was torn between the commands of his young master and those of his trainer, the photographer immediately saw a political metaphor in the scene. “I was thinking that the dog represented the people having to choose between the candies waved by the two men who represented different political choices.”

“Most of the time, the idea comes very quickly,” says Denil. “I start by finding an interesting frame, and then people tell things and, as a playwright, I see stories happening within a scene. I then try to trigger the emotion that could come from the image. The suggestions I make are not so much physical. I want the people themselves to understand how they have to behave.” All these “freeze-frames” suggest a complete story, with a before and an after, like in a film.

In these tableaux vivants with a slightly surrealist atmosphere – which subtly subvert the socialist realist aesthetic, “Lenin or Stalin are no longer the central figures; the people are” – the deceptively calm daily lives of the inhabitants of Kiev appear strange and unsettling. Could the city, criss-crossed by walls and fences, be under surveillance? An intense white light sears the images, threatening to make them disappear at any moment, like a nightmare created by Stanley Kubrick or Diane Arbus, which vanishes when you wake up. Let us not fall asleep while walking. What if that intense light was instead a signal of love and hope? The symbol of a shining future embodied by a couple with a bouquet of flowers or some

And what if Ukraine was not this complex territory in transition made up of parallel realities in which the past coexists with the future, the relics of communism with the expansion of capitalism, trauma with hope, and in which contradicting truths exist side-by-side without colliding?

“I focus on what comes from the people themselves”

BLENDING TIME In a post-truth era in which the notion of authenticity has lost all meaning (see Margins of Excess, the recent work by the Brussels photographer Max Pinckers), David Denil chooses to “focus on what comes from the people themselves.” In the book accompanying his project, Denil includes screenshots of amateur videos on YouTube spreading fake news about the war in the Ukraine, press cuttings containing valuable accounts, and collages of family photographs of victims who died in combat. “I was exploring how I could bring together the atmosphere of the Euromaidan protests and the stories of the people living in Kiev today, to blend time.” The book also features allegorical paintings and hard-hit-

ting articles, including one by the journalist Sébastien Gobert about the difficult de-communisation of Ukraine and a paper on the issue of post-traumatic stress in Ukrainian veterans, written by the English reporter Jack Losh.

The result is a dense, hybrid collection with a strong narrative, where everyone is encouraged to find their own truth and mythologies in it and to project their own emotions onto it. “This work is also about my inner conflicts. I chose to study photography because I wanted to explore something that comes more from myself,” says the forty-year-old artist who worked as an engineer for Proximus and Siemens before making the move to film and photography. “My grandmother was the only one with an artistic sensibility in my family. When she died, I decided to quit my job and go study in Ghent,” says Denil. “I think that if she was still alive, she would be proud of me now.”

Linsmaux et Aurelio Mergola, adeptes d’un théâtre sans paroles, mettent en scène les fragilités humaines dans un univers décalé traversé d’images fulgurantes. Un spectacle qui flirte avec l’étrangeté et sème le trouble.

Qu’est-ce qui vous séduit dans le théâtre visuel ?

AURELIO MERGOLA: J’ai l’impression que c’est la force des images qu’on

peut construire sur le plateau.

Notre écriture repose sur des actions et des images. Ça ne s’est pas décidé du jour au lendemain.

Dans nos premiers spectacles, nos personnages parlaient un peu, mais de façon détournée. On a réalisé alors la puissance et la force de l’absence de parole. Le spectateur est amené à aiguiser son regard pour décadrer les mécanismes et les mouvements.

SOPHIE LINSMAUX : Travailler les images nous amène à enchaîner les situations. On a envie de placer nos spectateurs dans la position d’un voyeur qui suit l’action sans y participer.

Regarder n’est donc pas innocent ?

LINSMAUX : La position du spectateur rejoint la thématique du spectacle sur le bouc émissaire et les comportements de foule.

Quand on est témoin d’une action, on est responsable de ce qu’on voit, au théâtre comme dans la vie.

Il y a dans vos spectacles une dimension fantastique, est-ce directement lié à l’absence de parole ?

MERGOLA : Je crois que c’est surtout lié à notre regard décalé sur le réel. Nous sommes de fins observateurs du quotidien. On se l’approprie et on le fantasme en y injectant nos images intuitives.

LINSMAUX : Quand on quitte le réalisme, c’est là qu’on fait du théâtre et que des images plus fantastiques peuvent émerger. On ne s’adresse plus au spectateur au même endroit.

Sans la parole, il faut s’exprimer autrement, c’est pour ça que vous attachez beaucoup d’importance au travail des mouvements ?

LINSMAUX : Ce qu’on fait n’est ni du mime, ni de la danse. Les acteurs ont une partition chorégraphique très précise. On travaille avec (la danseuse et comédienne, NDLR) Sophie Leso qui donne du sens à leurs mouvements et assure aussi une intense préparation physique pour que leur outil corps soit disponible. On est attentif à l’enjeu de chaque scène et à l’enjeu global. C’est un théâtre de rebondissements. Chaque action a une influence sur la suivante.

Quel a été l’élément déclencheur ?

LINSMAUX : On avait chacun des

histoires personnelles, et il y avait aussi la performance de Jérémie Pujau De la poule ou de l’œuf. Il arrive sur une place publique avec une table, sur laquelle il a déposé des œufs en boîte. Certains passants se servent et s’en vont.

Comme il est muet et impassible, il y a toujours quelqu’un qui va lui lancer un œuf. Et puis, il y a un effet de groupe et d’autres se

mettent à l’imiter. À l’issue de la performance, il prend le temps de parler de ce qui s’est passé avec les gens. Sa position n’est pas de dénoncer les lyncheurs mais de décortiquer le phénomène.

MERGOLA : C’est un fonctionnement qu’on perçoit quotidiennement au boulot, dans la presse, dans la politique. Ce qu’on a voulu mettre en scène, c’est le moment où l’on bascule de la tentation à l’acte. Chacun peut se reconnaître dans le bouc émissaire, pas dans le lyncheur. Il faut en sacrifier un

pour que le groupe aille mieux.

LINSMAUX : Par cette thématique, on a donné à voir ce qui met l’humanité en péril. À quoi répond ce mécanisme et qu’est-ce qui nous empêche de voir et de nous poser les bonnes questions ?

Quels genres de sensations ou d’émotions voulez-vous laisser aux spectateurs qui quittent la salle ?

LINSMAUX : Je voudrais qu’ils aient oublié le reste du monde pour y revenir différemment.

MERGOLA: Une sensation de silence interne qui les aidera à digérer ce qu’ils ont vu. J’espère que ça les touchera dans les yeux et dans les tripes. C’est un théâtre très physique. Le spectateur doit respirer avec le spectacle.

ijn vak is snijden,” getuigt Penelope vroeg in het beeldverhaal dat haar naam draagt. Het zou zomaar over haar schepper Judith Vanistendael kunnen gaan. Al ruim een decennium maakt de Brusselse werk dat diep snijdt en liefdevol littekens legt op de huid van de lezer. Haar beeldverhalen peilen naar verlangens, gemis, liefde, lijden, verlossing, gruwel, vervulling en leegte. En doen dat heel tastbaar, warm en diepmenselijk. Zo ook Penelope. De nieuwste Judith Vanistendael trekt groefjes in de ziel met een verhaal over een vrouw die strijdt met de vele rollen die ze in haar leven vervult: als echtgenote van dichter Otto, als moeder van de volwassen wordende Helena en als chirurg in een veldhospitaal in Aleppo. Daar redt ze levens, thuis wacht niemand haar nog op. Ze verdwijnt, ze verschijnt. En als ze dan toch weer bij haar gezin is, blijkt er een verstekeling uit de Syrische stad als een spookje te zijn meegereisd in haar rugzak. “‘Oorlogschirurg blablabla, heeft moeite blablabla, heel moeilijk blablabla… Jeetjemina, wat een serieus onderwerp! Maar ja, dat zijn we gewoon van Judith Vanistendael.’ Tsjakka, volgende!” Judith Vanistendael giert het uit wanneer ze vertelt over een filmpje van een Nederlandse vlogger, die de najaarscatalogus van Scratch – de Nederlandse uitgeverij die samen met Oogachtend Penelope uitgaf – doorbladert en on the spot op de synopsis van Penelope reageert. “Ik dacht: ‘Oh nee, nu denkt iedereen: Judith Vanistendael, dat is kanker, terreur in Baskenland, oorlog in Syrië…’ Terwijl ik het altijd vreselijk vind als iets te zwaar is.

Iets wat alleen maar onverteerbaar is, krijg je niet verteld. Voor mij zijn de beste boeken een combinatie van totale tragiek en totale lichtheid. Zoals het werk van Gabriel García Márquez, drama’s die tegelijk grappig en fantasievol en kleurrijk zijn. Of van Michel Houellebecq, een auteur die mensen tot leven brengt, in al hun schoonheid, met al hun gebreken. Hoe bitter hij ook overkomt, ik kan niet anders dan hem verdenken van een diepe

liefde voor de mens. Ik hou van die menselijke verhalen.”

HET WEEFSEL Penelope is net zo een boek. Een beeldverhaal van trillend vlees en jachtig bloed, van verscheurende ambitie en breekbare keuzes.

Judith Vanistendael verbeeldt in Penelope niet alleen adembenemend mooi het lijden en de onuitwisbare gruwel, de hartenpijn en de leegte die in een mens kan groeien. Haar boek ontsteekt in die duisternis ook dwaallichtjes die samen een fonkelende vertelling maken.

Penelope haakt prachtig in elkaar, als een weefsel waar zwaarte en lichtheid, humor en ontroering kleine in elkaar grijpende visioenen als een gebroken Mariabeeldje, Mariah Careys monsterkersthit, het werk van de Canadese kunstenaar David Altmejd en de Odyssee aan elkaar knopen.

uitgevonden – olé olé – maar het kwam zelfs niet in hun hoofd op om een vrouw daaraan te laten deelnemen. Dan heb ik me de vraag gesteld: welke relevantie heeft de Odyssee nu?

Vier jaar geleden dan, voor de #MeToo-beweging.

Daar ga je wel op aangesproken worden.

VANISTENDAEL: Ik heb in Frankrijk al verschil-

lende interviews gedaan, en die gaan allemaal over #MeToo! Ik heb een vrouw als hoofdpersonage genomen, omdat dat de zaken op scherp stelt. In essentie gaat Penelope over de spanning tussen je zelfontplooiing en je gezin.

Die zelfontplooiing is bij Penelope heel gewichtig, want ze redt mensenlevens. Dat is een prachtig alibi. Wie kan daartegen zijn? En de Odyssee was natuurlijk supergeschikt, omdat die het omgekeerde verhaal vertelt. Daar is het de man die vertrekt en de vrouw die achterblijft.

Odysseus wil zogezegd heel graag naar huis, ondertussen is hij wel twintig jaar weg. En heeft hij seks met andere vrouwen, beleeft hij spannende avonturen en krijgt hij weergaloze banketten voorgezet. En zijn vrouw Penelope wacht en wacht en wijst alle aanbidders af…

Jouw Penelope wacht niet. Op tien jaar tijd onderneemt ze 32 buitenlandse missies.

Gelukkig is er nog haar onnoemelijk liefdevolle man Otto.

VANISTENDAEL: Otto is perfect! Zoals Penelope

in de Odyssee ook redelijk in de buurt van fantastisch komt. Otto moest wel de meest liefdevolle vader en man zijn die je je kon voorstellen. Als hij vervelend zou zijn, goed, bon débarras. Maar nu heeft Penelope geen enkele reden om wat ze thuis heeft kapot te

JUDITH VANISTENDAEL: (Lacht) Ik zag dat heel wat

auteurs op een gegeven moment een klassiek verhaal onder handen nemen. Die klassiekers zijn referentiepunten, maar hebben we eigenlijk wel een flauw idee waar ze precies voor staan?

Dan heb ik beslist om zo een verhaal maar eens echt te gaan lezen. Hard labeur, hoor, die Odyssee. Een beetje moeilijk, soms repetitief en langdradig, en dan ineens waanzinnig hedendaags. Ik was vooral verbijsterd over de positie van de vrouw. Hoe misogyn die samenleving was. De Grieken hebben de democratie

maken. Otto is echt iemand waarvan je denkt: ‘Daar zou ik onmiddellijk mee willen trouwen.

Als Penelope weg is, kom maar af. En die dochter is eigenlijk ook supergeestig, geef die ook maar.’ (Lacht) Alleen de mama, die een tikje gemeen is maar vooral eenzaam en aandoenlijk, en Penelope’s tweelingzus zijn een beetje vervelend. Zij is Penelope zoals ze zou moeten zijn. Al heb ik Penelope liever dan haar zus. Ik word altijd wat ongemakkelijk van mensen die het allemaal voor elkaar hebben. Natuurlijk is dat ook maar een masker, iedereen strompelt door het leven. Maar toch. Misschien is dat

omdat ik zelf het gevoel heb voortdurend op mijn bakkes te gaan.

DE AUTOBIOGRAFIE VAN DE EMOTIE

• Volgt de opleiding beeldverhaal aan Sint-Lukas Brussel, waar ze intussen zelf lesgeeft

Dat doet ze met Penelope allerminst. Het is wonderlijk hoe ze het bloed in Aleppo weerspiegelt in dochter Helena’s eerste maandstonden. Hoe ze in de holte van een “abstracte Maria, zo een beeldje dat je kan kopen op de kerstmarkt” een mal voor alle moeders vindt.

Hoe ze die holte in de “enge sculpturen” van David Altmejd, “als holle kristallen uit de kitschwinkel, waar hij viezig haar op kleeft” laat echoën. En in het gelaat van Penelope zelf, door het altijd nakende afscheid als een leegte uitgevreten. “Penelope was heel moeilijk juist te krijgen,” vertelt ze. “Haar zus was er onmiddellijk als personage. Net als de moeder en Otto. En de dochter was ook gemakkelijk, want ik had, toen ik vier jaar geleden met het boek begon, thuis een dertienjarige rondlopen die zich gedroeg als een leuke, onuitstaanbare puber. Maar Penelope niet, omdat ze eigenlijk iets verschrikkelijks doet. En ik wou dat dat niet zo overkwam. Dat je begrip kon opbrengen voor haar beslissing.”

Dat personage is gegroeid?

VANISTENDAEL: Ja, Penelope was een verhaal

aan het schrijven dat ik niet geloofde. In het begin was ze een pure bitch, met een streng kapsel, een haakneus en strakke kleren, maar dat was niet geloofwaardig. Dan heb ik gezegd: “Ja, sorry, maar dat spelletje gaat niet door. Ik geef je een andere neus en ik laat je andere dingen zeggen.” Ik ben wel de baas. Als een personage een verhaal dreigt voort te brengen dat ik niet wil, dan grijp ik in. Het zijn mijn poppen, ik kneed ze.

Ben je een controlefreak?

VANISTENDAEL: Naar het schijnt. (Lacht)

Anderen zeggen dat, dat ik obsessief met die boeken bezig ben. Voor mij voelt dat niet zo, ik heb vaak het gevoel alsof ik niks onder controle heb. Anderzijds weet ik wel dat ik bepaal wat er gebeurt. Dat idee van het personage dat het verhaal schrijft, nee, het zijn nog altijd jouw hand en jouw brein die het maken.

voor je schreef, heb je wel geen zeggenschap gehad?

VANISTENDAEL: Nee, maar dat was wel Bernard

Dewulf, hè! Ik was zo vereerd dat hij dit wou doen. En natuurlijk schrijft hij de perfecte gedichten. Otto is ook gebaseerd op hem, of toch op zijn teksten voor De Standaard. Ik ken hem niet, maar in mijn hoofd is Bernard Dewulf perfect. Als schrijvende papa en echtgenoot getuigen zijn stukjes van zo’n ongelofelijke liefdevolheid, schoonheid en warmte.

Ik vind de taal in het algemeen trouwens heel juist in Penelope. Ik schrik er altijd van hoe goed je erin slaagt om je dialogen natuurlijk te houden.

VANISTENDAEL: Daar is hard aan gewerkt, hoor.

De losse dialogen uit mijn vorige boeken zijn helemaal weg. Ik ben daar nochtans niet spontaan goed in. De voice-over, de innerlijke stem van Penelope, heb ik door mijn vader (schrijver Geert van Istendael, ks) laten nalezen.

Hij lag op de grond van het lachen. Zo totaal melodramatisch-pathetisch-filosofisch was die tekst. Ik heb hem helemaal moeten uitpuren. Ik wou geen vulling. Alles, elke dialoog, elke tekstballon, moest betekenis hebben.

Een essentie die je probeert te vatten in – voor jouw doen – een luttele 150 pagina’s.

VANISTENDAEL: Ja, aanvankelijk was dat een

oplossing voor mijn schouder (die Judith Vanistendael tijdens haar kleurpotlodenextravaganza voor Mikel in de vernieling had getekend, ks). Ik ben al snel drie jaar bezig aan een boek, anderhalf jaar doe ik over het

tekenen. Knettergek werd ik daarvan. Dat is echt een gevecht tegen mezelf. Dit boek was klaar voor ik er erg in had.

Moeten wij je niet eens wat vaker bedanken voor die cadeaus? In onze seizoenspreview schreef ik dat het tijd wordt voor een resem prijzen…

De vloeibaarheid van aquarel past ook mooi bij het verhaal.

VANISTENDAEL: … en ik dacht: “Wat schrijft die

nu?!” (Lacht)

VANISTENDAEL: Vond ik ook, ja! Nu, dat leggen

van die lagen over het beeld, dat had ik vijf jaar geleden niet gekund. Het zou één grote smurrie zijn geworden. Nu kan ik een vlek zetten en dat is de perfecte vlek. Dat is training, een soort flow, waarbij je hersenen bijna automatisch de keuzes maken die je moet maken. Dat creëert ruimte in mijn kop, waardoor ik aandacht kan hebben voor complexere dingen. Voor hoe ik de sequenties organiseer, voor de tekst, voor wat ik echt wil met het medium.

Het viel me gewoon op dat elk nieuw boek van jou zo warm wordt onthaald, terwijl jury’s je werk zo vaak over het hoofd zien. Heeft dat te maken met het feit dat de kracht van je werk net in het onspectaculaire zit?

VANISTENDAEL: Mijn papa krijgt ook bijna geen

prijzen. “Dat is genetisch,” zeggen we dan.

(Lacht) Maar het is niet aan mij om te zeggen

dat ik prijzen verdien. Ik ben misschien te weinig aanwezig in de scene. En ik zit ook wat tussen het klassiek commerciële werk en het experimentele Frémok-werk. Met Toen David zijn stem verloor ben ik genomineerd voor drie Eisner Awards. Dat zijn waanzinnige nominaties, zowat de Oscars van het beeldverhaal.

Alleen, mijn boek heeft daarna niet méér verkocht. Het had geen enkele betekenis. Alsof ik gewoon de afwas had gedaan. Ik zou graag meer verkopen, hoor. Dat lijkt me heel fijn, geen subsidies meer hoeven aan te vragen, zelfstandigheid hebben. Zo een hit en dan superveel verkopen en een zwembad kunnen zetten? Bring it on!

Wat wil je echt?

VANISTENDAEL: Moeilijke vraag. Ik wil mijn

verhaal gewoon zo goed mogelijk vertellen. Ik vertrek dan niet van wat er moet gebeuren, maar van hoe ik mijn personages zo ver krijg dat ze geloofwaardig handelen. Dat is niet alleen technisch, maar grondt ook in een broeierig instinct. Het heeft, mooi gezegd, te maken met de autobiografie van de emotie: zijn de feiten het verhaal of zijn de subtekst en de emoties die daaruit voortkomen het verhaal? Ik vind zelf dat mensen te vaak in feiten vertellen, voor mij zijn ze een vehikel om de echte inhoud verder te dragen.

HET GESCHENK Die emotionele ondergrond geeft de onnoemelijke warmte die de beeldverhalen van Judith Vanistendael uitstralen. Het zijn verhalen op mensenmaat, opgehangen aan de eigen ribbenkast en geplukt uit dag en nacht. “Wat ik altijd probeer te doen, is een universeel verhaal te brengen waarin de rijkdom van de menselijke emotie en ervaring aanwezig is. En daarvoor ga ik gigantisch pikken uit mijn directe omgeving. Alles gebruik ik. Er staat een stukje dialoog in Penelope dat ik rechtstreeks van mijn man heb gejat. Komt daar die warmte vandaan?

Dat weet ik niet. (Krijgt een ingeving) Weet je wat het misschien is? Mijn eerste uitgever, De Harmonie, heeft me ooit een boek cadeau gedaan: The Gift van Lewis Hyde, echt een revelatie. Hydes uitgangspunt is dat kunst alleen maar kan bestaan bij gratie van het publiek. Als kunstenaar kan je je in een hoekje van de kamer staan uiten tot je erbij neervalt, maar als niemand het ziet, sterft die uiting.

Nee, kunst is bij uitstek een sociaal gegeven, je maakt iets voor een publiek. Dat is ‘the gift’, wat in het Engels zowel ‘talent’ als ‘geschenk’ betekent. Kunst bestaat met andere woorden pas als je het weggeeft. Dat idee sprak me erg aan. Mijn strips zijn mijn cadeautjes voor de mensen. En ik maak ze zo verleidelijk mogelijk, ik maak ze zo dat ze je raken. Misschien dat je daardoor een zekere warmte ervaart?”

Do sons inherit the sins of their fathers? Ad Astra is an extremely weighty existential space quest, but fans of director James Gray and star Brad Pitt can rest assured: both are in top form. — NIELS RUËLL

As predicted, Ad Astra is a mix of 2001: A Space Odyssey (and its Russian counterpart Solaris) and Apocalypse Now (or its source material, Joseph Conrad’s brilliant novel Heart of Darkness). But the best news is that this film bears marked similarities to James Gray’s earlier work (We Own the Night, The Lost City of Z). Gray loves dark, tragic stories that he narrates in powerfully neoclassical forms, though for some ridiculous reason this deters both large audiences and the people who hand out the major film awards. In terms of recognition, he must for the time being content himself with the great devotion of his fans and the appreciation of colleagues like Damien Chazelle and Francis Ford Coppola.

We hope very much that we’re mistaken, but we don’t think Ad Astra will change this. Even though it is a sci-fi film starring Brad Pitt who is in no worse form than he was when he outclassed Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The megastar resists the temptation to act grandiosely or to seduce the viewer. His character is an exceptional astronaut but no great hero. The loner who is proud of being utterly unflappable flies to Neptune to find out whether his father knows anything about the cosmic rays that are threatening earth. His father (a superlative Tommy Lee Jones) was once a brilliant astronaut who couldn’t have cared less about his son and who may have become the Colonel Kurtz of our solar system. There is no lack of adventure, but

ultimately this film is about existential crises and father-son complexes. Do sons inherit the sins of their fathers? Are they doomed to make the same mistakes? The breath-taking cinematography by the masterful Hoyte van Hoytema immerses you in the heart of darkness. That of the universe and that of man. It would be a lie to deny it: James Gray gets a bit lost in his ambitious space opera, but you best believe that he does so very memorably.

Brad Pitt schittert als een ruimtevarende eenzaat die naar Neptunus vliegt om te achterhalen of zijn verdwenen vader (Tommy Lee Jones) meer weet van de kosmische straling die de aarde bedreigt. Aan avontuur geen gebrek, maar uiteindelijk gaat het om existentiële huiver en aloude vader-zooncomplexen. De fotografie van Hoyte van Hoytema dompelt je onder in het hart van de duisternis. Die van het heelal en die van de man. Gray loopt een beetje verloren in zijn space opera, maar wij lopen graag mee.

Brad Pitt brille en navigateur solitaire de l’espace qui se rend sur Neptune pour savoir si son père disparu (Tommy Lee Jones) en sait plus sur le rayonnement cosmique qui menace la Terre. L’aventure ne manque pas, mais il est question finalement de doutes existentiels et de l’éternel rapport père-fils. La photographie de Hoyte van Hoytema vous plonge au cœur des ténèbres. Celles de l’univers et celles de l’homme. Gray est un peu perdu dans son space opera, mais on a envie de le suivre.

Amerika moet op dit moment niet van Woody Allen weten. De scenarist en regisseur van een vijftigtal films waaronder klassiekers als Annie Hall, Hannah and her sisters en Midnight in Paris is door pleegdochter Dylan Farrow beschuldigd van misbruik.

De hoofdrolspeler uit A rainy day in New York, rijzende ster Timothée Chalamet, schonk zijn loon weg aan Time’s Up en het Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. In tegenstelling tot Amerika deinzen de Europese bioscopen er niet voor terug om Allens nieuwe film te vertonen. Het is een romantische komedie in de mooiste decors die New York te bieden heeft. Het amoureuze weekendje Manhattan van een jong koppel studenten loopt helemaal in het honderd. Zij (Elle Fanning) wordt verleid door een veel oudere regisseur en een bekende acteur, hij (een wat saaie Chalamet) komt op een filmset de zus van een ex (Selena Gomez) tegen. Na een trage start krijgt de fraai gefotografeerde film vaart.

Woody Allen brengt exact wat zijn trouwe fans wereldwijd verwachten: humoristische verstrooiing met een jazzy soundtrack. (NR)

Après avoir fait le tour de prestigieux festivals et raflé le prix du jury à Visions du Réel (Suisse), le second long-métrage de la réalisatrice bruxelloise Alexe Poukine déferle à Flagey avec la force du tsunami #metoo. Pas une mode, comme se fourvoient certains, mais une prise de conscience historique ayant permis à la parole de se libérer, enfin. Cette délivrance des mots est au cœur du docu-fiction Sans Frapper. Alors que la caméra d’Alexe Poukine s’invite dans l’intimité (une chambre à coucher, un salon, …) d’actrices et acteurs ayant accepté de se mettre dans la peau d’Ada, jeune femme sexuellement violentée par un ami à l’âge de 19 ans, les fantômes de chacun ne tardent pas à refaire surface. #Metoo. Qu’elles aient subi les abus ou qu’elles les aient infligés, rares sont les personnes s’exprimant devant la caméra (et c’est pareil pour les spectateurs) à ne pas s’identifier au traumatisme vécu par le personnage invisible (mais présent en chacun de nous) d’Ada. Dans cet essai cathartique qui donne toute sa pertinence au reenactment, l’histoire de la jeune femme se mêle aux témoignages bouleversants des intervenants pour oser aborder la question du viol, l’ambiguïté sociale qui entoure la terminologie, les zones grises, les sentiments de honte et de culpabilité, le poids du trauma, le statut de victime, la notion de responsabilité,... Bref, parlons-en. (SOS)

Contrairement à l’Amérique, l’Europe n’hésite pas à montrer le nouveau film de Woody Allen, accusé d’abus sexuels. La comédie romantique zoome sur le week-end amoureux à Manhattan d’un jeune couple d’étudiants. Qui tourne en eau de boudin. Elle (Elle Fanning) est séduite par un réalisateur beaucoup plus âgé et un acteur connu, lui (Timothée Chalamet) rencontre la sœur d’une ex sur un tournage. Allen livre ici ce que ses fans attendent de lui : un divertissement humoristique avec une bande-son jazzy.

Fenêtres intranquilles Arpaïs Du Bois expose ses dessins et peintures, fruits d’une pratique quotidienne, où la rencontre du texte et de l’image déjoue les tensions entre figuration et abstraction, visible et invisible. — GILLES BECHET Pourfendre Le Vide. Les mots s’alignent en lettres capitales sur la composition toute simple d’Arpaïs Du Bois. Et ça change tout. Les formes abstraites prennent un autre sens. Pas figé pour autant. On serait incapable de dire si le texte vient supporter l’image ou l’inverse. Ils tracent deux lignes parallèles et convergentes à la fois.

Les mots semblent être un levier pour dompter l’inconscient d’où jaillissent des dessins qui ont peine à se reposer. C’est sans doute lié à la matière même de la peinture, une acrylique largement diluée qui la rend vibrante, instable, comme un souvenir qui a de la peine à se stabiliser. Elle ajoute aussi du bistre à son mélange, ce qui atténue l’éclat des couleurs en leur gommant aussi

une part de réel pour les teinter d’une sorte de mélancolie sourde.

Parfois la proximité entre texte et image est évidente, à d’autres moments, le texte énigmatique, vient ouvrir mille possibles. On ne va pas se hasarder à enfermer le sens de Décorer le naufrage. Les océans sont vastes et la météo incertaine. Ces textes comprennent bien souvent un verbe à l’infinitif comme s’il s’agissait d’instructions qu’Arpaïs Du Bois se donne à elle-même pour penser non pas son dessin mais le monde qui l’entoure.

In her first solo show at Rossicontemporary, Arpaïs Du Bois is presenting drawings EN and paintings. These are the fruit of a daily practice, which in the encounter between text and image attempts to diffuse the tensions between figuration and abstraction, between the visible and what eludes the eye.

aucune systématique picturale sinon que ses compositions occupent parfaitement l’espace et le blanc de la page comme un chat qui prend ses aises dans son panier. Elle passe également à des peintures grand format où elle conserve l’équilibre de ses compositions et la maîtrise de son cadre. Les larges coups de pinceau ressemblent alors à des chemins pour le regard. Elle prolonge aussi son travail dans l’espace avec des découpes de tapis plain, qui dans une pièce suggèrent un épanchement venu d’on ne sait où, et dans une autre, des formes qui font écho à la composition qui lui fait face. On aurait tort de les prendre trop au sérieux. Un des livres d’artiste qu’elle présente reprend les typos et la mise en page d’un magazine de design des années septante. Petit détail, dans les intérieurs cossus qui s’y dévoilent, on y reconnaît des œuvres d’Arpaïs Du Bois encadrées au mur. À Torchonner deux fois comme elle nous a prévenu dans un de ses dessins. L’univers de cette artiste insaisissable est moins tranquille et rectiligne qu’il n’y paraît.

Cocktails off the beaten track EN

Opening a speakeasy-style cocktail bar in a neighbourhood out of the city centre, now that’s daring! In Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek, Ethylo is bravely taking a chance on the endeavour.

You don’t find many cocktail bars outside of the usual boroughs of Brussels and Elsene/Ixelles. So, we were favourably disposed when we paid a visit, one Thursday evening in September, to Ethylo, which opened in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek at the beginning of the year. Located on a corner, the place has a limited capacity, with twenty or so seats. The pleasant space is divided into two adjoining rooms, furnished with low velvety seats. A gramophone helps to set the tone of the decor. The dark wallpaper decorated with a golden fan pattern gives it an art deco feel. Behind the attractive counter, which is tiled in the style of the Paris metro, only in black, works a patron who earned his stripes at Green Lab, among other establishments. He has been making his way in the world of mixology for about ten years.

It shows: the man has confidence and skill. What’s all the more impressive is that he puts his heart into his work. His work surface is lined with homemade bitters and cordials, concoctions used to add bitter or sharp notes to beverages. This display is topped off with numerous citrus fruit, which are dried on the premises. We also noticed that the menu

featured plenty of spirits and, we were delighted to see, a selection of craft beers that are worth checking out: Brasserie de la Senne, De Struise Brouwers, Cantillon, and Mermaid, a beer made by people from Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek. A Seventies soundtrack creates the atmosphere. Naturally, it was an original creation that we ordered, the intriguing “White Negroni” (€11), a fresh and bitter blend of Blanche de Drouin, Gentiane des Pères Chartreux, and Del Professore white vermouth. Although simple, it was an agreeable and striking combination, beautifully presented with a slice of dried apple and some star anise.

To complete the experience, once we had emptied our glasses, we tried the mixed platter (€16). It was disappointing. Given the care that had been taken over the cocktails, we were expecting freshly sliced cold meats and meticulously selected cheeses.

Between the pre-cut ham, gherkins, chutney, foie gras, fillet of duck breast, and other offerings that are hardly worth describing in detail, sadly, the snacks were not on a par with the rest. That is, nonetheless, easy to remedy.

De patron (gevormd bij Green Lab) staat in zijn sas en competent achter zijn werkblad waarop huisgemaakte bitters en borrels, ter plaatse gedroogde citrusvruchten en een artisanale bierkaart (waaronder de Schaarbeekse Mermaid) figureren. Wij probeerden de White Negroni (€11), die frisheid en bitterheid puurde uit een Blanche van Drouin, een Gentiane des Pères Chartreux en de witte vermout van Del Professore. Minder trefzeker was de portie gemengd (ham, augurken, chutney, foie gras en eendenborst, €16). Een teleurstelling, die gelukkig makkelijk is bij te sturen.

Ouvrir un bar à cocktails façon speakeasy à Schaerbeek, voilà qui est téméraire. Le patron (forgé au Green Lab) est à l’aise et compétent derrière son plan de travail qui aligne bitters et cordials faits maison, agrumes séchés sur place et une carte de bières artisanales (dont la schaerbeekoise Mermaid). On tente le White Negroni (11€) qui panache fraîcheur et amertume par le biais de Blanche de Drouin, Gentiane des Pères Chartreux et du vermouth blanc Del Professore. La formule, joliment présentée, est percutante.

On agrémente l’expérience d’une planche mixte (jambon prédécoupé, cornichons, chutney, foie gras, magret, pour 16 €). Elle déçoit, mais ce point est facile à améliorer.

Lui, il jongle comme il respire. Ensemble, ils sautent à la corde, se poussent, se rattrapent dans le labyrinthe de l’espièglerie et de l’amour. La lunaire finlandaise et l’agile australo-suisse se sont rencontrés à l’école des arts du cirque Esac. Avec tendresse et complicité, ils ont construit un spectacle poétique aux acrobaties innovantes et à la simplicité désarmante.

En robe et hauts talons, entouré d’un décorum ultra kitsch et méga trash, l’artiste lustre son image de marque depuis la fin des années soixante, arpentant, sans montrer le moindre signe de fatigue, des scènes jonchées de (faux) sang et de (véritables) guillotines. Die laatste scoorde goud, maar dankzij hun in Strokes-gitaren gemarineerde hitjes ‘Where do we go now’ en ‘Every morning breaks out’ kampeerde Freaky Age ook zelf lang in De afrekening van StuBru. This past spring, on the solo album Finding Gabriel, the American piano virtuoso Brad Mehldau highlighted once again how much he loves to colour outside the lines. The record with a biblical message, wordless singing parts, and many guests is miles away from the piano trio with Larry Grenadier on double bass and Jorge Rossy and, later, Jeff Ballard on drums, with which he wrote jazz history. Their last CD Seymour Reads the Constitution! is actually only one year old. Fortunately, the productivity of the master improvisor, who interprets standards, pop tunes, and his own work with complete ease, seemingly has no effect whatsoever on his genuine musical class. Cette lumière est celle de la Californie où le photographe américain, établi depuis 1969, a réalisé la plupart de ses clichés. When we first saw the collages by the Brussels-based artist David Delruelle, they catapulted us into undiscovered universes – situated somewhere between the visible and the imaginary – where we could sail to the moon, climb a stairway to heaven, or hop on a tram for the morning commute to our lunar office. His Fragments series, by contrast, immersed us in a poetic way in the remnants of a recognizable yet irrevocably lost past. At Le Brass, the brilliant collagist is presenting a selection from the series that he cut and pasted together between 2013 and 2019.
