The Black Madonna RAVE REBEL WITH BUTTERFLY GLASSES During her time at high school in Kentucky, she looked about the same as she does now: short dyed hair, androgynous clothes, just younger. At 41, Marea Stamper alias The Black Madonna may have become a charismatic role model in the international rave and house scene, but her wonder years were terrible. “I wasn’t just bullied, I was tortured,” she said earlier this year in a candid interview with de Volkskrant. She retreated into alternative music played by the local university radio station: Pixies, Ministry, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. While her classmates swooned over The Little Mermaid, she and her parents would watch horror films and Das Boot. “I felt alone, was an outsider from everything, but I actually wanted to be different and was probably a know-it-all who felt smarter than everybody else, with her damn films and stupid books.” Thank goodness there was a rave scene that embraced her colourful and rebellious character. It started with a part-time job that involved spending the weekend EN

traveling across America to sell cassette tapes of DJ sets at rave parties. That is how she was a front-row witness to a number of ground-breaking moments in American dance music. She helped to pay for her studies in Chicago doing odd jobs for music labels and clubs. She ran into the late house pioneer Frankie Knuckles at the Smartbar, and he encouraged her to play records herself. Since 2012, she has been doing that as

“DANCE MUSIC NEEDS SOME DISCOMFORT WITH ITS EUPHORIA” The Black Madonna. “As a teenager, I had read an intriguing book about the theme,” she told the online DJ platform Resident Advisor. “I must already have sensed that there was a vacuum of femininity in dance music. Not that there are absolutely no female DJs and producers, but there just aren’t enough

of them.” In a strange way, with her connective DJ sets that blend euphoric disco tunes, Detroit techno, and Chicago house into a layered experience, she is grateful to the bullies of her youth. It is in part thanks to them that The Black Madonna has developed into who she is now: not only the first woman to be proclaimed DJ of the year by Mixmag (in 2016), but also the feminist who with an anti-establishment message and butterfly glasses champions the rights of other outsiders. “Dance music needs riot grrrls,” has been her inspiring motto from the beginning. “Dance music needs some discomfort with its euphoria. Dance music needs salt in its wounds. Dance music needs women over the age of 40. Dance music needs breastfeeding DJs trying to get their kids to sleep before they have to play. Dance music needs cranky queers and teenagers who are really tired of this shit.” Her abhorrence of intolerance is contrasted with a playful DJ style that is anything but rigid. “As long as you play well, you don’t need to take your set too seriously. De tiende verjaardag van het Magritte Museum wordt gevierd met een tentoonstelling… in de KMSKB. Over de artistieke relatie tussen de Belgische grootmeester van het surrealisme René Magritte en zijn Spaanse collega Salvador Dalí. De snor en de bolhoed ontmoetten elkaar in 1929 zowel in Parijs, als bij Dalí thuis in Cadaqués. Aan de hand van meer dan tachtig schilderijen, sculpturen, foto’s, tekeningen, films en archiefstukken toont deze expo hoe beslissend de ontmoeting is geweest voor hun beider ontwikkeling en die van het surrealisme. Ondertussen onthult ook het Magritte Museum een vernieuwde selectie. (MB) NL

Een nieuwe pijler Op de restanten van het legendarische KultuurKaffee is Pilar verrezen, de nieuwe cultuurantenne van de VUB. Aansluitend op de aanstaande openingsavond zet het eerste themafestival Pilar ASAP - The For X’s Sake Edition de toon voor een goedgevuld seizoen. — MICHAËL BELLON

ultuurKaffee, de cultuurwerking van de universiteit, leidde de voorbije jaren noodgedwongen een nomadisch bestaan. Na de verbouwingswerken van ene paar jaar opent nu Pilar. “We zijn voortaan aanwezig op twee sites,” zegt coördinator van de zeskoppige Pilar-ploeg Lieselotte Vaneeckhaute over de infrastructuur. “Er is de opstart van onze deelwerking Barak Lili M binnen See U (in de voormalige rijkswachtkazerne in Elsene, mb), dat een creatieve broedplaats is, en waar we momenteel drie jonge Brusselse residenten hebben, een project rond cultureel ondernemerschap ontwikkelen, en een repetitieruimte openstellen voor jonge Brusselse artiesten. En nu beschikken we met Pilar ook over onze nieuwe presentatieruimte op de campus aan de Pleinlaan. De Pilar Box voor concerten en podiumkunsten heeft een capaciteit van 90 zitplaatsen of 300 staanplaatsen. Bar Pilar wordt zes dagen op zeven uitgebaat als een op zichzelf staande horecazaak, met ook nog een toog in de Pilar Box. Op de verdiepingen in Pilar is er plaats voor de bureaus, een doka voor analoge fotografie, een repetitieruimte met een vleugelpiano en Pilar Expo, waar we vier tentoonstellingen per jaar presenteren.”

Hoe past Pilar in het Brusselse culturele veld? LIESELOTTE VANEECKHAUTE: Onze doelgroep zijn studenten en alle avontuurlijke kunsten cultuurliefhebbers van 18 tot 35 jaar, maar natuurlijk is iedereen welkom. En we staan erop om heel erg bottom-up te werken, zodat de jongeren mee kunnen bepalen wat er in Pilar allemaal gebeurt.

Welk ritme hebben jullie voor ogen tijdens het cultuurseizoen? VANEECKHAUTE: Twee keer per seizoen – van

half oktober tot half november, en van begin maart tot begin april – houden we het multidisciplinaire festival Pilar ASAP. In vier

weken programmeren we dan telkens twaalf evenementen. Buiten die twee festivals zijn er nog ongeveer 35 andere events, waarvan sommige ingekapseld zitten in een groter geheel, zoals Mindblowers van we.KONEKT. brussels in samenwerking met de KVS, of debatten en lezingen in samenwerking met deBuren. De festivals zijn thematisch, en met het eerste – For X’s Sake – willen we bewust het debat over levensbeschouwing en zingeving voeren.

Waar kijken jullie zelf naar uit deze eerste weken? VANEECKHAUTE: In dit festival is er veel plaats

voor podiumkunsten, met bijvoorbeeld Ontroerend Goed, Dounia Mahammed en het Brusselse Loop-s Cie & Unbewitch Finance Lab. Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert belichamen mooi de link tussen kunst en wetenschap. Zij zullen zelf een performance geven op 24 oktober, wanneer we 24 uur lang programmeren van acht uur ’s ochtends tot ’s anderendaags, maar zij verzorgen voordien ook de scenografie van het hele festival. Tijdens de 24 uur gaan we met een intieme performance van Community of Listeners en een ligconcert van Inne Eysermans de nacht in in de Pilar Box. De tentoonstellingen gaan we zelf cureren, maar JRSLM, met werk van onder anderen Thierry De Cordier, Michaël Borremans, Joëlle Tuerlinckx en Ria Pacquée, is uitzonderlijk nog samengesteld door professor Hans De Wolf in het kader van het feestjaar van 50 jaar VUB.

SESAM OPEN U! “Ook voor de muziek kijken we naar de leefwereld van de jongeren zelf,” zegt muziekprogrammator Jade Corbey over de openingsavond op 17 oktober. “Het is een urban programma geworden met links naar het festivalthema. In de jeugd van Dvtch Norris speelde geloof een belangrijke rol – hij maakte ook nummers als ‘Blessed’, en ‘Preacher’ met The Subs. Voor Ikraaan is het een heilige noodzaak om muziek te maken. Rare Akuma, de Brusselse dj Yooth en Black Mamba zullen het tempo stelselmatig opdrijven. Maar ook later in het festival presenteren we interessante avonden zoals die van het nieuwe Brusselse platform Stadskanker in samenwerking met Stoemp!, en het concert van het elektronische duo Visible Cloaks uit Portland met de Japanse geluidspioniers Yoshio Ojima en Satsuki Shibano.”

Cris et chuchotements Gabriela Carrizo et Franck Chartier engendrent un monstre

Après Vader et Moeder, la compagnie internationale basée à Bruxelles Peeping Tom continue d’explorer les tréfonds de la filiation avec Kind, le dernier volet de leur trilogie familiale. Une plongée hallucinée et hystérique dans le monde de l’enfance, pas si innocente que ça. Noir, fascinant et savoureusement dérangeant. — TEXTE ET PHOTO: SOPHIE SOUKIAS

ans un décor nocturne digne de Twin Peaks, cinq performeurs et performeuses se débattent avec l’imagination d’une petite fille (une interprétation grandiose de l’actrice et mezzo-soprano de 55 ans Eurudike De Beul) aux émotions en dents de scie. Rapidement, le conte de fées quasi-muet prend des allures de film d’horreur suffocant. La musique se déchaîne, les cris de terreur percent le ciel lunaire surplombant des falaises menaçantes, trop réelles pour être vraies. Au fur et à mesure que se raconte la comptine cauchemardesque, l’enfance montre son vrai visage. Dans le dernier chapitre de leur seconde trilogie commencée en 2014, l’Argentine Gabriela Carrizo, qui avait dirigé Moeder, et le Français Franck Chartier, en charge de Vader, signent des retrouvailles monumentales et profondément hantées avec leur dernier rejeton Kind. Poursuivant leur style inclassable (entre danse, théâtre et acrobatie), le couple de chorégraphes ayant transité par les Ballets C de la B et la Needcompany avant de fonder en 2000 leur compagnie mondialement acclamée Peeping Tom et de devenir parents, s’enfonce

toujours plus loin dans l’ambiguïté des rapports familiaux et de la nature humaine. Autant inspirée par les études psychologiques (pulsions, refoulements et transmission transgénérationnelle) que par les imaginaires amplifiés de ses propres performeurs (acteurs et danseurs, hommes et femmes, de divers âges et nationalités), la compagnie à l’identité visuelle toute-puissante emprunte au langage cinématographique (références à Ingmar Bergman et autres, décors hyperréalistes, mouvements en slow motion, etc.) pour emmener le spectateur dans un monde équivoque et perturbant, quand il n’est pas grotesque. Un monde surréaliste où l’enfant se révèle à la fois un redoutable prédateur et une proie ô combien vulnérable. Un univers intensément désenchanté qui fait sombrement écho à la marche inéluctable du monde. « On s’est demandé quel effet la banalisation de la violence pouvait avoir sur la brutalité innée des enfants, et où tout cela allait nous mener », nous confiaient début juillet Franck Chartier et Gabriela Carrizo, rencontrés à Amsterdam alors que Kind ouvrait le festival international de danse contemporaine Julidans.

Ce soir, le public a beaucoup ri, notamment lors de scènes plutôt sombres voire dérangeantes, et le spectacle s’est clôturé par une standing-ovation. Aviez-vous anticipé ces réactions ? GABRIELA CARRIZO : On ne peut jamais prévoir

les rires ou les réactions du public. Ici on se retrouve dans le cas spécifique d’un spectacle sur le thème de l’enfance qui porte beaucoup de violence et de controverse. Quand on est confronté à des situations fortes ou brutales, on ne sait pas comment on va réagir. Rire peut être la manifestation d’un inconfort. Je pense qu’à la fin du spectacle, on a réussi à transmettre quelque chose au spectateur et qu’il a été touché.

Vous vous étiez séparés artistiquement pour les créations de Moeder et Vader, étiez-vous contents de vous retrouver pour Kind ? FRANCK CHARTIER : On aime bien se déséquili-

brer et se mettre en situation difficile, c’est comme ça qu’on a décidé de se séparer pour Vader et Moeder. Ce ne fut pas une décision facile à prendre, on était très habitués à travailler à deux et tout à coup on se retrouvait seuls. Au début ça a été une peur terrible: on se

retrouvait isolés avec tous les choix et les responsabilités. Quand tu es à deux, tu partages, tu discutes. Petit à petit, on a commencé à se manquer et à la fin, on n’avait qu’une envie, c’était de se remettre à travailler ensemble.

Kind est le point final d’une trilogie familiale qui a vu le jour en 2014. Le résultat est-il proche de ce que vous aviez commencé à entrevoir il y a cinq ans ? CHARTIER : Au début, Kind s’inscrivait dans un travail autour de l’héritage. Que lègue-t-on, plus ou moins consciemment, à nos enfants en tant que parents ? On aimait bien le concept du fantôme en psychologie. L’idée qu’un tabou, comme une agression sexuelle par exemple, soit véhiculé sur plusieurs générations. Un tabou naît dans une famille et le fantôme se glisse sous la forme de gestes ou de mots traduisant une angoisse. Le tabou peut ressortir jusqu’à six ou sept générations plus tard. C’est à partir de là qu’on a basculé vers l’idée de la violence inconsciente pour ensuite explorer la banalité de la violence et les névroses qu’on lègue de manière tout à fait aveugle, sans s’en rendre compte. On était surpris de voir à quel point le monde de l’enfance renvoyait non seulement à l’innocence, la joie et les rêves, mais aussi à des mondes noirs et cauchemardesques. On s’est enfermés dans cette violence en cours de création.

Est-ce que vous vous attendiez à faire une pièce aussi sombre ? CHARTIER : On commence toujours en se disant qu’on va faire une pièce drôle et gaie et puis, je ne sais pas pourquoi, on finit par être attirés par le drame (rires). CARRIZO : Les choses cachées, ces choses qui ne se disent pas, sont finalement très humaines. Au départ, on imaginait comme protagoniste un enfant seul qui allait se construire dans la vie sans protection et recevoir la violence de front. On a nourri le personnage de tout ce qui nous habitait mais on a aussi organisé des ateliers avec des enfants entre 8 et 12 ans, que nous avons vus régulièrement. On était très inspirés par un enfant en particulier qui était incroyable. Il y

avait en lui une telle violence, une telle envie de jouer avec les armes et les fusils. C’était au moment de la vague de heurts qui accompagnait les élections au Brésil et pendant la campagne de Matteo Salvini en Italie sur les armes à feu. On s’est demandé dans quel contexte socio-politique nos enfants se construisent et quel effet la banalisation de la violence peut avoir sur eux.

Vous étiez hypnotisés par un petit garçon, dites-vous. Mais c’est pourtant Eurudike De Beul, mezzo-soprano et performeuse de 55 ans, qui a été choisie pour incarner ce rôle d’enfant. CHARTIER : Il y a une fragilité dans la vision d’une petite fille avec des armes, on avait envie de développer cette contradiction. La proposition est d’ailleurs venue d’Eurudike elle-même et ça a été une révélation. Quand elle se met dans le rôle de la petite fille, je pense qu’elle devient réellement une petite fille dans sa tête. Et en tant que public, on y croit et c’est perturbant. C’est ça la magie du théâtre. On a fait des essais avec de vraies petites filles et garçons mais avec Eurudike, qui est une adulte, on pouvait aller beaucoup plus loin et se permettre d’aborder des thèmes dérangeants.

GABRIELA CARRIZO :

On aimait aussi qu’Eurudike soit ménopausée et qu’elle ne puisse plus avoir d’enfants. CARRIZO : On aime travailler avec des performeurs de tous les âges. On aime confronter des générations et des corps différents.

En tant que parents, on imagine que vous avez été particulièrement inspirés pour Kind. CHARTIER : Oui bien sûr, les crises, la violence, tout ça, ... On est passé par là. On s’est beaucoup intéressés à cette violence innée qu’on ne veut pas voir et reconnaître en tant que parents. CARRIZO : On a remarqué que jusqu’à un certain âge, l’enfant n’a pas encore conscience de ce qui est bien ou mal. Il se lance dans la vie avec une certaine violence, une impulsivité mêlée à une envie de découverte.

Vous montrez aussi la face vulnérable de l’enfant qui est manipulable et sans défense. Vous allez jusqu’à suggérer une scène d’attouchement. Comment cette scène est-elle intervenue dans le processus créatif ? CHARTIER : La première fois que la scène a été proposée, ça nous a choqués. C’était surprenant, on ne s’attendait pas à ça. Cette surprise dans l’innocence nous a intéressés, ce jeu qui tout à coup se transforme en attouchement sexuel. On commence à en parler maintenant, avec la vague #meetoo et tout ce qui tourne autour, mais ce sont des choses qui arrivent régulièrement. Pour nous, c’était important que ça puisse être abordé. CARRIZO : On a placé la scène dans un contexte où les gens sont en train de soigner la petite fille, de s’occuper d’elle jusqu’à ce que ça dérape et devienne perturbant. La dernière scène suggère également la perte de l’innocence, le son n’est plus un sifflement d’oiseau

nouveau casting à Barcelone et à Bruxelles. Au KVS, pas moins de 2400 personnes se sont présentées pour l’audition. Quels furent vos critères de sélection ? CHARTIER : On aime la technicité et la virtuosité. Pour nous c’est essentiel que le mouvement puisse déformer visuellement l’être humain. On aime perturber l’anatomie humaine. CARRIZO : Le performeur doit pouvoir dégager un certain mystère, quelque chose qu’on n’explique pas. On aime les danseurs qui ont su développer leur propre personnalité à travers le mouvement. On voit tout de suite quand un danseur a été formaté par telle ou telle école.

mais un sifflement avec une autre connotation, une connotation sexiste avec un effet violent et confrontant.

De nombreuses propositions émanent de vos performeurs. On peut vraiment parler d’une création de groupe ? CHARTIER : On en demande beaucoup aux danseurs parce qu’on cherche une certaine vérité du moment sur scène. Au début du processus créatif, on leur donne un thème, ils partent dans le monde extérieur et reviennent avec une idée. Au bout d’un mois, ils ont épuisé toutes leurs idées et se mettent à douter. C’est à ce moment-là qu’ils vont puiser au fond d’eux-mêmes et revenir avec des choses personnelles et familiales. On essaye ensuite d’amplifier ces éléments qui les caractérisent. Par exemple, une des danseuses nous a confié qu’elle ne voulait pas avoir d’enfants dans un monde comme celui-ci. Ça nous a touchés et on a intégré ce questionnement dans le spectacle.

Comment faire pour que les performeurs puissent garder suffisamment de distance avec le spectacle ? Qu’ils puissent se protéger d’eux-mêmes ? CHARTIER : Nous sommes en quelque sorte leurs gardiens et nous sommes là pour les

guider. Mais c’est sûr que ça n’est pas évident, d’autant plus que la pièce est particulièrement violente. La danse et le théâtre, ça n’est pas comme au cinéma où on shoote une scène et on la met dans la boîte une fois pour toutes. Les performeurs doivent jouer des scènes violentes jour après jour sachant qu’ils incarnent des caractères qu’ils ont eux-mêmes créés. Quelle influence ces personnages ont-ils sur leur vie de tous les jours ? C’est quelque chose qu’on a beaucoup vécu en tant que couple sur scène. On amplifiait nos traits de caractère en répétition et c’était difficile de revenir avec ce passif à la maison, parce qu’on avait encore les souvenirs de ce que nos personnages s’étaient faits l’un à l’autre pendant la journée.

CARRIZO : On a une façon très horizontale et familiale de travailler. Les performeurs, comme nous, doivent gérer à la fois leur vie personnelle et professionnelle. On passe beaucoup de temps en tournée et ils sont souvent loin de chez eux. C’est sûr que ça rapproche et que ça crée des liens. CHARTIER : Comme le travail fait que les danseurs se donnent constamment à nous, ils montrent parfois une part d’eux-mêmes que leur entourage ne connaît pas et cela peut créer des surprises en les voyant sur scène. Bien sûr qu’on ne dit pas tout et qu’on se protège, mais chez Peeping Tom, il y a quand même une ouverture de parole qui est très grande. On recherche le doute et la déstabilisation constamment. Le doute est source de créativité, mais pour cela il faut pouvoir se protéger, afin de ne pas tomber dans le précipice. Être dans le déséquilibre mais se retenir. Tout ça crée une ambiance familiale.

Vous êtes un couple, des parents et des collaborateurs. Comment envisagez-vous votre place au sein de la dynamique Peeping Tom ?

Peeping Tom aime se mettre en danger. Quel est le nouveau challenge à venir ? CHARTIER : On a un nouveau projet d’opéra. C’est un vrai défi pour nous de travailler avec un orchestre live et à partir d’un livret qui est déjà écrit. On a toujours rêvé de partir d’une histoire pour voir ce qu’il est possible d’inventer autour et de gratter dessous. On a conscience de prendre un grand risque, que le public d’opéra n’appréciera peut-être pas la sauce Peeping Tom et vice versa, mais on avait très envie d’accepter le challenge, de se laisser guider par nos désirs.

Phlegm does Bruegel 450 years after his death, the KBR, the former Royal Library of Belgium, is honouring Pieter Bruegel the Elder with an exhibition of his prints and an homage by one of the greatest and most original muralists in the world: Phlegm. “To walk in Bruegel’s footsteps was a real task.” — KURT SNOEKX

miss getting to travel somewhere warm!” Phlegm writes via email when I ask him if, after spending three months making his engraving based on Bruegel’s Luxuria, he misses the physicality of painting the large murals he is most famous for? “But yes, I do feel I miss it. Engraving is very solitary. Long periods of isolation like that aren’t good for you, mentally and physically. It’s good to be aware of that and try to juggle projects so you don’t drive yourself insane.” Well...let’s allow for a little insanity, the touch of madness that borders on genius. It is at that intersection that Phlegm’s highly unique universe expands. A universe that stretches across walls all over the globe and is characterized by an insane eye for detail, a rigorous use of black and white, and a love of images that start telling stories that stretch far beyond the physical boundaries of the wall. And which refer to each other through his recurring characters: somewhat strange looking, melancholy, almost numbed creatures that wander with covered mouths, a horn ready to attack, or peering through a telescope around an equally imaginative world, warring, surviving, or being pulverized. A world brimming with incredible structures and machines, mythical creatures, and ancient but eternal beings that carry the mythical world on their shoulders, pull the strings, or suffer whatever fate they must suffer. The earth, in other words. That place where we all attempt to assert our impotent power, conceal our nature, and thunder towards our inevitable end, not least through the things we ourselves create. Like a final fanfare that resounds inaudibly. In this sense, there are many similarities between Phlegm’s world and Bruegel’s universe, where people are cast onto the earth, vacillating between vice and virtue. And just like Bruegel,

Phlegm combines his sharp eye with compassion, painful dissection with empathy – we’re all in this together.

MEDIEVAL SURREALISM This did not escape the attention of the KBR, when they visited the street art festival The Crystal Ship in Ostend in 2017. The former Royal Library of Belgium promptly asked Phlegm whether he would make a mural to honour Bruegel – that will be inaugurated on 14 October with a rooftop concert – and whether the Welshman would also help to shed light on the lesser-known sides of the creator of iconic paintings like The Fall of Icarus, The Peasant Wedding, The Fall of the Rebel Angels, and Dutch Proverbs who died 450 years ago. “We talked about Bruegel’s engraving in general and Luxuria in particular, of which they own several states of the engraving as well as Bruegel’s preliminary drawing. I spent a long time seeing if my work could adapt enough to feel authentic. Eventually I came up with a composition that I felt worked.”

And three months later you produced an astonishing result. What is most difficult about the process of engraving? PHLEGM: Engraving is like a meditation. I can spend two or three solid days just doing lines that make up the texture of the floor or the gradient of the sky. You have to just try and work confidently and put the hours in without thinking of the whole plate. When you have three months of solid work, to let in thoughts of the result can be crushing. So I guess the hardest part is actually when the end is unavoidably in sight and you know that if you don’t stay calm or you rush, then you could cause a slip that almost destroys the whole thing.

final piece in “The World of Bruegel in Black and White”, the impressive exhibition that focuses on Bruegel’s print oeuvre. Do you remember when you first encountered his work? PHLEGM: I have had a long interest in this particular period of art history, and I have always appreciated Bruegel as a wonderful natural painter, someone who was able to have multiple layers of narrative overlapping in his compositions. Certainly some of his more famous paintings of village life packed with dense narrative appealed to me a great deal as a student years ago. I started as a cartoonist, and I still have graphic novels I’m working away at. So I love narrative. I think I found something fluid and interesting in Bruegel’s sort of medieval surrealism.

Do you feel a connection with Bruegel? PHLEGM: I feel very connected to this era in history. The explosion of interest in copper engraving and the effects it had on artists of that time feels very similar to my life now and my relationship with the internet. The explosion of printed media and copper engraving suddenly made artists more visible. Prints flowed along trade routes and artists’ work became widespread. I’m a very private person and I feel like the internet fuelled the interest in my work in a similar way.

work through engraving, actually, since my work these days is very much related to 16th century copper engraving. I have always had a strong interest in fine pen and ink work. As I pushed myself to draw with more and more detail, it led me back around to engravers like Albrecht Dürer, Lucas van Leyden, the Wierix brothers, and Bruegel to name just a few favourites. visual language evolved, the story writing hid in my sketchbooks. I also have a wordless graphic novel I have been working on for over eight years now. It’s still not really more than two thirds finished, even though it’s hundreds of pages long. Comics have always been a part of my practice, they just weren’t visible to anybody.”

Going from comic books to illustration, to a single image must have compelled you to think differently about images? PHLEGM: It has always taken an effort to maintain my relationship with storytelling. In fact, most of my sketchbooks and ideas for murals tend to start as a mixture of frames and written words, short stories or scenes rather than just an image. These stories are kept private in my sketchbooks but then I use a moment from them to create a mural. So hopefully the images seem like snapshots from an untold story. At the very least I think it makes for a more authentic painting.

It does make your work very lively in any case. Something hard to pinpoint too, at the same time familiar and elusive. PHLEGM: I think I intentionally try to blur as many boundaries as possible: messing with history and the present, creating characters that seem slightly surreal or creepy, and hinting at complex stories that could have multiple meanings. If you get the mystery right, it’s a sort of catalyst for the observer’s imagination.

Does reducing the scale of an engraving elicit a different imaginary quality for you? PHLEGM: The two scales are actually really similar. Mural work is obviously far more physical, but

in both instances, you’re absorbed in the small area you can see. Under a magnifying glass an engraving is reduced to the fairly abstract area you see and it’s the same with a wall. Up close on a huge wall you get no real idea of the thing as a whole. I think I get my buzz from the reveal, working in autopilot and then occasionally stepping back to see it. Most of the work for my murals is done with no reference, except for the idea that I have in my head and my sketchbook. I rarely take up a sketch in the lift when I work. Since my miniatures project (a book project consisting of 7 by 5-centimetre engraving prints, ks), I often do a very simple line drawing no bigger than a box of matches. That’s enough to remind me of the composition.

It all seems very interconnected. In addition to murals, engravings, and comics, you also make sculptures, like for your recent show “Mausoleum of the Giants” in your hometown Sheffield. Do you think of engraving as a kind of sculpting? PHLEGM: It’s interesting that you say that. I think engraving feels very sculptural. If you look closely at the plates, I’m really carving out the form. I love sculpture because you dominate space. Large-scale murals are the same. It’s architectural and powerful. I think I’ve always approached drawing and engraving in the same way. I’m desperately trying to express the form. The extreme detail is a way of really trying to pull something 2D into a 3D world.

De retour dans l’actualité avec l’album Beneath The Eyrie, les Pixies lustrent leur légende sans trop frotter. Fidèle à l’esprit du groupe, le disque met ainsi de l’électricité au cœur de l’action avec humour et dérision. Chef des opérations, Black Francis s’apprête aujourd’hui à secouer Forest National. Cela valait bien quelques mots d’explication. — NICOLAS ALSTEEN

e statut des Pixies n’est pas simple à gérer. Comment répondre aux attentes quand on a été le meilleur groupe du monde ? De 1986 à 1991, le gang de Black Francis a, en effet, tutoyé les sommets du rock alternatif avant d’imploser en plein vol. Reformé après dix ans d’absence, le groupe est parvenu à surmonter les tensions le temps d’une tournée. Puis, Kim Deal est retournée à ses Breeders, laissant la basse à Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Queens of The Stone Age). Depuis ce changement de personnel, le groupe a célébré l’anniversaire de l’album Surfer Rosa (1988) et revisité son passé à travers de nouveaux disques. Troisième essai post-reformation, Beneath The Eyrie souffre encore des comparaisons. Reste que si les nouvelles compos rappellent des mélodies d’autrefois, les bonnes chansons sont là (On Graveyard Hill, St. Nazaire). De quoi planter le décor : en 2019, le groupe américain écrit son histoire sans jamais brader sa légende.

Suite au départ de Kim Deal, en 2013, vous avez confié la basse à Paz Lenchantin. Son intégration au sein des Pixies a-t-elle été facile ? BLACK FRANCIS : Facile, c’est un grand mot.

Avec le batteur David Lovering et le guitariste Joey Santiago, nous sommes comme de vieux frères. Notre petite famille a dû s’adapter à l’arrivée de Paz. Mais aujourd’hui, nous la considérons vraiment comme notre petite sœur.

Paz Lenchantin a donc dû trouver sa place. Aujourd’hui, elle participe pleinement aux enregistrements des Pixies. Peut-on parler d’un processus démocratique ? FRANCIS : Les journalistes utilisent souvent le

mot « démocratie » pour symboliser notre dynamique. Les médias utilisent-ils aussi cette métaphore pour évoquer l’organisation des autres groupes ? J’ai parfois l’impression d’être à l’origine de cette comparaison. Alors que, dans les faits, ça ne colle pas réellement à notre mode de fonctionnement. À un moment, j’arrive avec des idées de morceaux et je les soumets aux autres. Si tout le monde est d’accord, c’est validé. Mais il y a des choses que je valide moi-même. Quand je suis persuadé du bien-fondé d’une décision, je passe à l’action. Car, depuis toujours, c’est moi qui donne l’impulsion. J’écris les chansons. J’indique la direction à suivre. Ce n’est pas spécialement démocratique.

Avez-vous changé votre façon de travailler à l’heure d’aborder le nouveau Beneath The Eyrie? FRANCIS : Pas vraiment. Même si l’écriture

diffère un peu d’un album à l’autre. Quand j’écris de nouveaux morceaux, je soupèse mon sac à dos. Je sais ce qu’il y a à l’intérieur. J’ai conscience du passé des Pixies. Cela influence sensiblement ma méthode de travail. Ce n’est jamais un changement radical. Mais il y a toujours un léger virage. Beneath The Eyrie ne fait pas exception à la règle.

Avez-vous pris du plaisir durant les sessions d’enregistrement de ce nouveau disque ? FRANCIS : Bien plus que sur le précédent Head

Carrier. Celui-là n’était pas une sinécure. La situation était vraiment inédite. Kim (Deal) n’était plus là. Suite à son départ, nous sommes partis à la recherche d’une nouvelle bassiste. Dans le même temps, nous avions lancé les bases du disque avec un nouveau producteur. Il fallait donc mettre en place une nouvelle dynamique entre cinq personnes. À présent, nous avons trouvé nos marques et tout est bien plus cool.

Comme sur le précédent essai, le producteur Tom Dalgety (Ghost, Royal Blood, Rammstein) opère à la technique. C’était important de repartir avec la même équipe ? FRANCIS : Oui. Parce que j’aime la stabilité.

Quand je rencontre une personne que j’apprécie, je n’ai pas envie de la remplacer du jour au lendemain. Avec les Pixies, nous avons toujours été honnêtes. Nous n’avons jamais fait semblant ou cherché à être autre chose que

ce que nous étions. Si nous sommes encore là, c’est parce que nous sommes droits dans nos bottes. Nous faisons confiance aux gens. Ceux qui bénéficient de cette confiance s’en rendent compte assez vite...

Sur l’album, vous affirmez votre penchant pour les mélodies nerveuses et bien secouées. On touche d’ailleurs au meilleur des Pixies sur le morceau St.Nazaire. Que vous évoque cette ville ? FRANCIS : Déjà, elle me fait penser à Tom Waits.

En découvrant la ville, son port et ses bateaux, j’ai tout de suite songé à lui. Il devrait écrire un album là-bas. Moi, j’y suis resté une journée avec mes enfants. Nous avons observé l’océan et visité la base sous-marine construite par les nazis. J’ai enregistré beaucoup d’informations ce jour-là. Je me suis posé énormément de questions aussi. J’aime l’atmosphère de Saint-Nazaire, son aspect à la fois maritime et industriel. Je ne pourrais jamais vivre là-bas. Mais si je devais noyer ma solitude dans l’alcool pendant une année sabbatique, ce serait l’endroit idéal.

Les Pixies sont souvent cités en référence par d’autres artistes. Pour votre part, quel est le groupe qui vous a donné envie de jouer de la guitare ? FRANCIS : La première chanson que j’ai réussi à

jouer, c’était As Tears Go By des Rolling Stones. J’adorais ce morceau. Je le connaissais sur le bout des doigts. Paradoxalement, je serais incapable de le rejouer aujourd’hui.

Votre groupe est apparu en 1986 dans les bars de Boston. Trois décennies plus tard, quel rapport entretenez-vous avec l’industrie musicale ?

plus obligés de vendre des disques pour vivre. En revanche, ils doivent absolument jouer des concerts. À la fin des années quatre-vingt, les disques se vendaient bien. Mais de nombreux intermédiaires se servaient dans la manne. Si bien qu’il ne restait pas grand-chose dans la poche des musiciens. En ce sens, je préfère la situation actuelle. Elle est bien plus transparente. Avant, les maisons de disques tenaient les artistes en otage. À présent, les labels vendent moins d’albums. Dès lors, ils se montrent beaucoup plus coopératifs. Du coup, le pouvoir de décision des groupes est plus important.

Waar de natuur wild door je hoofd waait en spookachtige nevelslierten zich over de werkelijkheid leggen. Hoe zweverig wordt het als een van de hogepriesters van de transcendentale cinema vertelt over een Russische monnik die uitblonk in iconen? Amper. Andrej Roeblev van Andrej Tarkovski is net heel aards. De eigenzinnige en spirituele Russische filmregisseur werd bewonderd door Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa en Terrence Malick, verafgood door Lars von Trier en schaamteloos gekopieerd door Alejandro González Iñárritu. Tarkovski zag film als beeldhouwen met tijd en hield van lang aangehouden opnames en het associatief vermengen van droom, herinnering, visioen en werkelijkheid. Wie geen ervaring heeft met zijn unieke filmtaal, oefent best met Stalker of Solaris. Als die films uw ziel beroerd hebben, kan Andrej Roeblev een verpletterende ervaring zijn. Andrej Roeblev schilderde in de vijftiende eeuw iconen die vandaag nog steeds aanbeden worden door gelovigen en kunstliefhebbers, maar verwacht geen kunstenaarsbiografie. Verwacht zelfs niet te veel kunst. Pas helemaal op het einde van drie uur cinema zien we zijn religieuze schilderwerk. Door ineens over te schakelen van dramatische zwart-witbeelden naar zaligmakende kleuren benadert die climax de goddelijke extase. Wat daar voor Roeblev aan voorafgaat, is allesbehalve goddelijk. God is heel moeilijk te vinden in een modderig, middeleeuws Rusland met Tataarse indringers, veel wreedheden en ploeterende mensen met bizarre heidense rituelen. Is het in zo’n destructieve tijd wel zinvol en gepast om je via de kunst aan God te wijden?

Van het verhaal moet je je niet te veel aantrekken, op je zintuigen vertrouwen volstaat. Tarkovski vindt het verhevene in het aardse en wij via hem. Net als Roeblev werd het hem niet gemakkelijk gemaakt. Het is onzeker of hij aanstuurde op een parallel tussen Roeblevs gruwelijke tijd en het sovjettijdperk, maar zijn relatie met het communistische regime was problematisch en de filmrelease werd drie jaar lang tegengehouden. Gelukkig zijn Flagey en Cinematek niet tegen te houden.

Andreï Tarkovski est un cinéaste singulier et spirituel russe, admiré par Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa et Terrence Malick, adoré par Lars von Trier, et copié sans vergogne par Alejandro González Iñárritu. Tarkovski considérait le cinéma comme du temps sculpté, il aimait les longs plans et l’association du rêve, du souvenir, de la vision et de la réalité. Son film Andreï Roublev, sur un moine qui peint des icônes au Moyen Âge russe, est une expérience extraordinaire. Ne vous attendez pas à la biographie d’un artiste, mais faites confiance à vos sens. Tarkovski trouve le sublime dans le terrestre et nous, à travers lui. FR

« Voilà cent ans, de père en fils, que va la ferme », écrivait le poète Émile Verhaeren en 1895. Qu’en est-il aujourd’hui ? Le réalisateur Édouard Bergeon tire la sonnette d’alarme. Sa saga paysanne très dure décrit la chute cruelle d’un homme qui a repris la ferme de son père, fondé une famille et travaille avec un dévouement impressionnant. Face aux inévitables imprévus de la nature et aux catastrophes financières évitables liées à la culture intensive ou causées par les banquiers sans cœur, il se démène encore plus et accumule les dettes. Jusqu’à ce que la cruche se brise. Bergeon n’invente rien. Il a vu son père tomber dans des circonstances similaires. Le bilan des excès de l’agriculture industrielle est accessoire à l’histoire vraie et poignante d’une famille qui méritait mieux. Le fait d’avoir un grand nom à l’affiche ne semble pas correspondre au style franc et réaliste, mais Guillaume Canet, chauve et moustachu, fait un excellent travail, tout comme l’actrice flamande Veerle Baetens. Le cinéma français aurait besoin de plus de films comme ça. (NR)

Does it make sense to bewail someone’s passion for new technologies? The Ang Lee case makes it difficult simply to answer “of course not” to this question. With films like Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Sense and Sensibility, the American-Taiwanese director guaranteed himself a prominent place in the cinema history books and stacks of prizes, but since he made Life of Pi, he has expressed more interest in trying out new technologies than in good storytelling. In the action thriller Gemini Man, he tests 3D+ and ultra-high frame rate (60 frames per second) and shows off two different Will Smiths. The one that looks more like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the computer creation. The flesh and blood Smith plays a 51-year-old sniper in the American secret service who wants to retire after one last execution in Liège. Unfortunately, his former mentor has cloned him. The first big fight between the old and the young Smith is exciting enough to maintain belief in the future of the new technology. But the script, dialogues, and character development are so weak that you wonder if there wasn’t a clone of Ang Lee in the director’s chair. (NR)

Op de natuurlijke tegenslagen en financiële catastrofes reageert hij door nog harder te werken en nog meer schulden te maken. Tot de veer breekt. De stijl is franjeloos, het verhaal aangrijpend. Guillaume Canet doet het uitstekend, net als Veerle Baetens. De Franse cinema kan meer van dit soort films goed gebruiken.

Édouard Bergeon’s tough-as-nails farming saga describes the cruel decline of a man who takes over his father’s farm, starts a family, and farms with great dedication. He reacts to the natural setbacks and financial catastrophes by working even harder and getting even deeper in debt. Until he can no longer take it. The style is unadorned, and the story is moving. Guillaume Canet does an excellent job, just like the Flemish actress Veerle Baetens. French cinema could use more films like this.

Avec des films comme Brokeback Mountain et Sense and sensibility, Ang Lee s’est assuré une place dans l’histoire du cinéma. Mais depuis L’Odyssée de Pi, il s’intéresse davantage aux nouvelles technologies qu’à une histoire forte. Dans le thriller d’action Gemini Man, il teste la 3D+ et la fréquence d’images ultra-élevée pendant que Will Smith se clone. Le scénario, les dialogues et la psychologie des personnages sont médiocres, au point de se demander si ce n’était pas un clone d’Ang Lee à la place du réalisateur.

Art consommable Pour sa première monographie à Bruxelles, le Mexicain Gabriel Kuri crée une œuvre avec les rebuts de notre société de consommation. Des assemblages minimalistes pour questionner notre rapport au banal et au jetable. — GILLES BECHET L’artiste mexicain Gabriel Kuri habite et travaille à Bruxelles depuis 16 ans. L’idée d’une exposition monographique au Wiels a connu une longue gestation. La voici, aujourd’hui, parfaitement en phase avec l’air du temps. Le recyclage, le tri sélectif et l’économie circulaire refaçonnent désormais peu à peu notre quotidien. Pourquoi l’art devrait-il en être exempt ? Avec un détachement amusé, Kuri l’applique à son propre travail qui repose essentiellement sur

l’assemblage hétérogène de matériaux et d’objets banals du quotidien. L’exposition, bien ordonnée, s’organise en quatre types de matériaux : papier, plastique, métal et matériaux de construction. On a parfois l’impression que le processus et l’organisation importent plus que l’œuvre elle-même. À voir ces morceaux de métal, ces mâchoires de grues et ces blocs de béton comme figés dans un cadrage inattendu, souligne que l’œuvre est d’abord

dans le regard et qu’une promenade dans les coulisses de la ville peut être un acte artistique et poétique. Certaines associations fonctionnent mieux que d’autres.

TABLEAU D’HONNEUR Des fragments de pierre noire avec un petit rouleau coincé sous l’arrondi se la jouent minimal. Des billets à gratter suggèrent d’absurdes décorations épinglées sur un tableau d’honneur. Coupés dans leur course ascensionnelle par un plafond, des sacs en plastique gonflés comme des ballons et tagués d’un « Thank you » auraient bien joué la fille de l’air. Kuri ne se contente pas d’assembler, il crée aussi de surprenants décalages avec ses tickets de caisse démesurément agrandis en tapisseries de la consommation éphémère. L’œuvre la plus impressionnante mobilise plusieurs tonnes de sable qui façonnent un paysage dunaire parsemé de piécettes en cuivre, de chewing-gums et planté de milliers de mégots, tels des végétaux atrophiés. L’image est impressionnante, l’artiste devient paysagiste de ces excès de consommation qui n’attendent que notre indifférence pour coloniser la planète.

he truth about genuinely good restaurant ideas is that they are few and far between. That’s why we were thrilled to hear about Joran at a time when Crowdfunder was being used to bring the concept to light. We had to salute an establishment that described itself as a “cidrothèque”, a place where you can discover the whole range of flavours that the fermented beverage has to offer, combined with somewhere to eat galettes (savoury pancakes). A few months later, Joran opened its doors a stone’s throw from place Dailly. It was not without trepidation that we paid it a visit one evening at the end of September: would the place live up to expectations? And would the galettes be as good as the ones we’re used to eating in Brittany on our trips there several times a year? We’ll give you the good news first. A lot of work has gone into the menu. Clearly, the manager has searched far and wide to bring back gems. The fruit of his efforts is a large selection, which features bottles made by producers such as the excellent Belgian Cidrerie du Condroz and Eric Bordelet, the cider master. Better still, it’s also possible to sample the ciders by the glass. There are several barrels from which cider is available on tap and is thus vibrant-tasting and served at the ideal temperature. Ramborn Farmhouse from Luxembourg (€5 for 30cl), Oak Cask Blend from England (€3.50 for 30cl), Thistly Cross Whisky Cask from Scotland (€6.80 for 50cl), etc., you can appreciate all the nuances of cider. As for the food, we were unimpressed. Listed on a large green board, the options are somewhat limited, consisting of five snacks and three galettes. To start with, we chose the black olive tapenade (€7), which was served with some slices of excellent bread. The dish

was delicious, due especially to the kalamata olives, which proved the owner’s talent for unearthing good quality products. It was, however, let down by the crockery, which smelled less than fresh (the manager apologised and deducted it from the bill). As for the galettes, the “Chèvre” (goat’s cheese) version for €7 seriously lacked appeal. The ingredients – cheese, honey, walnuts, and raisins – were underwhelming. They seemed juxtaposed rather than matched. You would be better off with the “Complète” (€7), a combination of egg, cheese, and excellent ham that worked better but that was still nothing to get excited about.

De la cidrerie du Condroz jusqu’aux nectars d’Eric Bordelet, en passant par les breuvages au fût Ramborn Farmhouse du Luxembourg (5€/30cl), Oak Cask Blend du Royaume-Uni (3,5€/30cl) ou encore Thistly Cross Whisky Cask (6,8€/50cl), … Côté restauration ? Bof. À peine cinq grignotages et trois galettes. On choisit une délicieuse tapenade aux olives noires (7€) gâchée par une vaisselle qui ne sent pas la rose. Les galettes ? La version Chèvre à 7€ manque de gourmandise, mieux vaut prendre la Complète (7€) dont le très bon jambon fonctionne un peu mieux. FR

Bára Sigfúsdóttir has an average name for someone from Iceland, but as a dancer and choreographer, she is a cut above the rest. This year, she won prizes in Iceland for The Lover, which premièred at the Beursschouwburg. De IJslandse componist en producer verscheen aan het firmament als medeoprichter van het Bedroom Community-label en werkte al samen met Björk, Jóhann Jóhannsson en Robert Wilson. Exhibitions of young emerging artists tend to resemble one another and can even be quite intimidating. Not this one. A group of artists from Goldsmiths College, University of London designed their show to be a performative experience. More of a party than an exhibition. A living organism even. For three weekends, visitors are invited to come and speak to the artists and to leave objects, which will accumulate and be added to the pieces to form a single joyous mess in which resistance is expressed through collective and radical joy.
