Daymé Arocena A HEART FOR CUBA

“Who? The Buena Vista Social Club? There is so much more.” Daymé Arocena says that she doesn’t want to be rude, but that the small band of ageing salsa musicians who taught the Western world “a little bit” about Cuban musical heritage, was not around when she was growing up. “I only started hearing about them when I started travelling. It is a commercial phenomenon that presents nostalgic music that was popular here in the 1920s and which you can hear on every street corner nowadays. But young Cubans especially are no longer interested in this dime a dozen music.”

Next year it will be 2020 so it can’t hurt to have encountered Daymé Arocena. The 27-year-old jazz singer from Havana, who with the guidance and support of the British DJ and label boss Gilles Peterson has become something of a revelation, is the perfect antidote to musical arthritis. On her new album Sonocardiogram, she has sculpted her classical training, Santería chants, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into a refreshing jazz and neo-soul sound. What’s more, with its tribute to local greats like La Lupe, Arsenio Rodríguez, Emiliano Salvador, and Merceditas Valdés, the suite that closes “I WANTED TO TELL the record is a perfect beginner’s guide to the MY LIFE STORY AS Cuban artists who do really SINCERELY AS matter according to her.

POSSIBLE” The album consists of three parts. “The first is about Daymé as a religious person, the second is about Daymé as a human person, and the third is about Daymé as a Cuban woman. As the title suggests, I take a scan of my heart. I wanted to tell my life story as sincerely as possible. After having asked for the blessing of the sun in the intro, the album starts with a trilogy in which I sing three chants in the order of a ceremony of my Santería faith (which combines elements of Catholicism and the Yorùbá religion, tp). I was only 17 when I wrote them. They represent my spirituality and the moment at which I became conscious of my vocation to bring together folkloristic Cuban music and contemporary styles.”

The five-track suite “Cinco maneras de amar” then tells the stories of the loves of her life. “Now that I am married, I feel safe and stable, but that hasn’t always been the case. I also had to mature in love. I know what I want and what I don’t want.” Incidentally, it was her husband who made the artistic nude portrait on the album cover. “I was in the sea at Santa Cruz del Norte, a Cuban fishing village with an abandoned beach. I could tell everyone that I wanted to highlight my Santería name Yemeya (which means ‘saint of the sea’, tp), but actually I just wanted to be naked in a soulful and spiritual way, because figuratively that is exactly how I am on the album.” — TOM PEETERS

Het centrum van de bedrijvigheid wordt de pop-upreplica van café Aux Trois Rois in de oude buurtcinema Novanoïs. Op zaterdag kan je er onder meer terecht voor de Marollen-film Le chantier des gosses van Jean Harlez en de expo rond schilder Jef Bourgeois. ‘I was a little Greta when nobody cared’ EN

hen we contacted Michael Pinsky via WhatsApp, he was in the garden of the United Nations headquarters in New York. A climate summit would soon be starting there, and his Pollution Pods were being installed. It is thanks to an invitation from the World Health Organization that these five transparent geodesic domes made their way into the nerve centre of power, after touring around the world for the past two years. Pinsky sounds happy that the immersive installation that recreates the air quality in five different locations on the planet is getting more traction. Two days after our conversation, Greta Thunberg would breathe in the polluted air of New Delhi, Beijing, São Paulo, and London and compare it to the clean air of the Norwegian island Tautra, adding fuel to her angry speech that has since gone viral globally. “As a child, I was a little Greta,” Pinsky says amused. “I just didn’t get the same publicity. Long before Chernobyl, in the late 1970s, I was already resisting nuclear energy. My installations were also inextricably linked to ecological concerns.”

Your Pollution Pods are a textbook example of how you seek to change the opinions and ultimately also the behaviour of the visitors of your installations.

MICHAEL PINSKY: That’s right. For this project, I

consulted with Norwegian environmental psychologists. We wanted to design an installation that has a direct impact on how people think about the environment and climate change. But that is only possible by speaking to their everyday realities. We don’t need to explain how real climate change is to anybody on the Maldives. They’ll be living underwater soon anyway. They are already feeling what Greta calls “the panic”.

Nobody is panicking here yet, so you have to bring panic in by the back door by involving things that people feel strongly about, like air pollution for example. Though it is not a cause of climate change, it does have severe consequences for public health, which is sacred and a major reason to call policymakers to account about their moral responsibilities. I am primarily referring to lower-level politicians, like our mayors, because upper-level politicians, like the Trumps of the world, are just so out of it that they are absolutely useless in terms of the climate change debate.

In the end, the only thing that will stop climate change is a cultural change. Art can help because it is able to question and even to change cultural assumptions – such as whether it is a good thing to keep consuming more and more or driving polluting cars – because in this particular case it is backed up by science.

Is the installation that you are bringing to the Canal Zone in Brussels also intended to confront society with its behaviour?

PINSKY: Yes. I first presented the installation in

a residential neighbourhood near the docks in Somerset. There was no doubt that the objects we fished out of the water had been thrown in by locals. Some people were incensed. In a city like Brussels, that link is less explicit and my main point is to emphasize the general principle that is at the root of our throw-away society, namely that our system of refuse disposal is not adapted to our system of consumption, despite the fact that the two are inextricably linked. In the countryside, people stack their rubbish in cupboards or sheds, but if you live in a small apartment in the city, that’s impossible. The more you buy, the more you have to throw away. The old couches you see dumped on the street are a consequence of that. I don’t think we realize that enough.

Which objects are ideal for L’eau qui dort?

PINSKY: Bicycles, shopping trollies, bathtubs…

basically any big objects with a certain shape so that you can see their reflection on the water when there is a spotlight on them at night. It makes them look like ghostly museum pieces.

Objects made of metal or stainless steel are perfect for the soundtrack, which we made with the found objects. We didn’t only want to show people what they were throwing away, but also to make them hear it. The interplay of light and sound makes the objects come to life.

De speelse, gelaagde en fijnbesnaarde kostuumfilm Portrait de la jeune fille en feu is de liefdesfilm van het jaar. Mannen doen er niet in mee. “Chantal Akerman was een van de belangrijkste cineasten uit de filmgeschiedenis.

Maar wie praat er vandaag nog over? Vrouwen worden gewist,” zegt de Franse regisseuse Céline Sciamma. — NIELS RUËLL

Hoe groot was het budget voor Portrait de la jeune fille en feu?

CÉLINE SCIAMMA: Vier miljoen euro. Waarom wil

je dat weten?

Toen ik je interviewde voor Bande de filles zei u: “De vraag is hoe ze reageren wanneer ik om een budget van tien miljoen euro zal vragen. Gaan ze me nog altijd laten doen? Die dag zal ik achterhalen of ze me beschouwen als een filmregisseur of als een meisje.”

SCIAMMA: Ach zo. (Lacht) Ik heb geen tien

miljoen gevraagd. Ik heb gevraagd wat ik nodig had. Bande de filles kostte maar 2,6 miljoen. Ik ben dus wel gegroeid. Het stemt me vooral tevreden dat ik op een grotere schaal heb kunnen werken zonder aan vrijheid in te boeten. Ik ben erg gesteld op mijn autonomie en radicaliteit. Daar kunnen geen miljoenen tegenop.

Twijfel je er nog steeds aan of je wel wordt beschouwd als een belangrijke filmregisseur?

SCIAMMA: Ik twijfel niet aan mijn werk. Ik heb

oor het eerst naar een Gouden Palm mogen meedingen en meteen de scenarioprijs winnen: Céline Sciamma hoor je niet mopperen over de bijval voor haar vierde langspeelfilm. Veel volgers van het Festival Cannes mopperden in haar plaats en vonden dat Portrait de la jeune fille en feu een prijs met meer allure verdiende. Een Gouden Palm zelfs.

In een kasteel op een Bretoens eiland in 1770 weigert de jonge Héloïse (boegbeeld Adèle Haenel) te poseren voor een schilderij dat zou worden geschonken aan een rijke huwelijkskandidaat. Haar moeder probeert haar te slim af te zijn door een schilderes in te huren die zich voordoet als gezelschapsdame. Overdag observeert Marianne (revelatie Noémie Merlant) Héloïse tot in het kleinste detail, ’s nachts probeert ze haar stiekem na te schilderen. De intensiteit van Mariannes blik ontgaat Héloïse niet en de vonk slaat over. Liefde begint met kijken en het beantwoorden van een blik.

Met een buitengewone finesse beeldt Sciamma het ontvlammen van het verlangen uit, terwijl ze betekenislaag op betekenislaag stapelt.

een plekje verworven. Ik kan in alsmaar comfortabelere omstandigheden mijn beroep uitoefenen. Maar ik wil er vooral plezier aan beleven. Daarom was ik erg blij met de selectie voor de competitie van het Festival van Cannes.

Die impliceert een schaalvergroting: je werk wordt op een internationale schaal bekeken en besproken. Dat het ook in de grond kan worden geboord, stoort mij niet. Het is zeer boeiend en leerrijk om geconfronteerd te worden met een waaier aan uiteenlopende visies op mijn werk.

Mannen en vrouwen met verschillende gevoeligheden en culturele achtergronden spreken zich uit over mijn film. Dat is véél boeiender dan enkel bekeken te worden door de Franse filmpers, die erg georiënteerd en ferm verouderd is.

delijk, de link met cinema is duidelijk, het is uiteraard een persoonlijk portret én een manifest dat hopelijk aanzet tot een discussie die ik graag zou zien losbarsten.

Ik wou geen verticale film die een mening opdringt, maar een horizontale film met weinig hiërarchie en veel gelijkheid. De kijker wordt medeplichtig gemaakt en uitgenodigd om actief te zijn. Hij is zelf een van de onderwerpen van de film. Hij krijgt de tijd om aan zichzelf te denken. Zijn emoties en voorgeschiedenis bepalen mee zijn ervaring. Dat heb je bijna altijd met een liefdesverhaal.

Het overweldigende slotakkoord geeft mee dat een stopgezette liefdesgeschiedenis geen verloren tijd hoeft te zijn. Ze kan je tekenen voor het leven.

SCIAMMA: In feite sluit de film hier aan bij

Titanic. In die kaskraker herinnert een oude dame zich een verloren geliefde, maar het einde is lumineus: ook zonder hem heeft ze een rijk en vol leven geleid. Titanic breekt je hart, maar biedt tegelijkertijd troost door te wijzen op de energie die je uit een grote liefde kan putten.

Ik geloof heel hard in de emancipatorische dynamiek van de liefde, ook van de liefde die is stopgezet. Verkijk je niet op het tragische van een liefde die gestopt is, maar erken in de eerste plaats dat die liefde heeft bestaan en in

Veel kenners waren teleurgesteld dat je in Cannes maar de scenarioprijs won. Welk gevoel overheerste bij jou: trots of ontgoocheling?

SCIAMMA: Ik had weinig toegang tot mijn

gevoelens, maar zowel op het podium en tijdens de persconferentie als in de coulissen ervoer ik wel hoe teleurgesteld vele anderen waren. Bij mijn eerste deelname aan het belangrijkste festival ter wereld won ik een prijs. Dat is formidabel, maar iedereen vroeg of ik niet erg teleurgesteld was. Vandaag blik ik daar geamuseerd op terug, maar op het moment zelf was het maar een bizarre situatie.

In Portrait de la jeune fille en feu draait het de hele tijd om kijken, terugkijken en bekeken worden. Hield je er ook rekening mee dat de kijker meekijkt?

SCIAMMA: Uiteraard. De film is speels en laat

verschillende lagen vrolijk en genereus met elkaar in dialoog gaan. Ik wou geen film die zich verstopt. De spiegeleffecten zijn overdui-

het er nauwelijks beter toe. Ook in de film zijn de vrouwelijke cineasten uitgewist. Wie praat er vandaag nog over Chantal Akerman? Wie? Niemand en dat is een schandaal. Akerman was niet de beste vrouwelijke regisseur, ze was een van de belangrijkste cineasten uit de filmgeschiedenis tout court. Alice Guy is een ander voorbeeld. Er zijn zoveel voorbeelden.

Er zijn ook veel vrouwelijke kunstenaars met een corpus dat onterecht aan hun echtgenoot of minnaar is toegeschreven. Ook de notie van muze is meestal dubieus. Dora Maar staat bekend als de muze van Picasso, terwijl ze een grote surrealistische fotografe was, zoals de tentoonstelling in het Centre Pompidou bewees. Gabrièle Buffet-Picabia wordt de muze van de Franse kunstschilder Francis Picabia genoemd, terwijl ze het brein was achter de kunstscene rond Marcel Duchamp. Hun namen zijn bekend, maar ze hebben totaal niet de uitstraling die ze verdienen op basis van hun intellectuele en artistieke leven.

de tweede plaats dat ze in je voortleeft. Ze kan voor een grote levensdynamiek zorgen. Ze laat een blijvende indruk na. Je kan de leegte die een persoon heeft achtergelaten onder meer met schoonheid vullen. Elke afgelopen liefdesgeschiedenis is de matrix voor je toekomstige emoties.

De mens heeft een grote traditie van verhalen over ongelukkige liefdesgeschiedenissen. Denk maar aan Romeo en Julia. Die belangstelling is volgens mij geen masochisme. Uit wat voltooid is, kan je conclusies trekken. De meeste romantische komedies eindigen op een afbeelding van geluk: het koppel is gevormd.

Daar kan je geen enkele conclusie uit trekken.

Dat soort verhalen is dan ook snel vergeten.

Een lesbische relatie is geen optie in de achttiende eeuw, maar je maakt er geen verhaal over verboden liefde of verdrukking van. Is dat al te vaak verteld?

SCIAMMA: Ik had geen zin om tijd te verliezen

met het zoveelste verhaal over verdrukking.

Mijn interesse gaat volledig naar het potentieel van die relatie. Anderzijds wou ik het leven van de vrouwen uit die tijd wel respecteren.

Marianne heeft autonomie en kan haar leven al min of meer kiezen, Héloïse niet. Ik wou er zeker geen ‘sterke vrouwen’ van maken. Ik heb genoeg van alle sterke vrouwen die ons aangesmeerd worden. Ik heb helemaal geen zin om een sterke vrouw te moeten zijn. Ik wil helemaal geen pionierster zijn. Ik heb zin om mijn leven te leiden.

Portrait de la jeune fille en feu verhaalt de mogelijke rijkdom van een relatie, de beleefde rijkdom én de limiet. Een limiet die niet intiem maar collectief is. De omstandigheden in de film zijn zo dat er niets de intieme toenadering

in de weg staat. Het gaat niet om gevaar of obstakels. De enige zorg is: wil de andere mij en wat wil de andere van mij?

Jouw Marianne was geen uitzondering. In de achttiende eeuw schilderden veel vrouwen.

Alleen kennen we ze niet. Zonde?

SCIAMMA: Is dat niet ontzettend triest? Toen ik

doorhad dat al die schilderessen hebben bestaan, maar totaal onbekend zijn, werd ik woest. Die schilderessen zijn niet vergeten, ze zijn uitgewist. In mijn kunst of ambacht gaat

Mag ik daar nu al het voordeel van inzien? We hebben een hele inhaaloperatie voor de boeg, waarbij we fantastische werken en kunstenaressen kunnen ontdekken.

SCIAMMA: Absoluut. Toen ik doorhad hoeveel

vrouwelijke kunstenaars genegeerd worden, heb ik op enkele weken tijd een volledig nieuwe kunstgeschiedenis samengesteld voor mezelf.

Ik vond zelfportretten van vrouwen uit de vijftiende eeuw. Ik stelde vast dat ik de beelden van vrouwen héél hard heb gemist. Ze ontbraken in mijn leven. Ze ontbreken in ieders leven, maar nog meer in dat van vrouwen. Dat de vrouwelijke auteurs niet zijn doorgegeven aan de volgende generaties, is verschrikkelijk.

Dat snijdt ons af.

Maar ik ben hypercontent dat ik in deze tijd leef. Ik ben blij met de fabuleuze opportuniteit om nieuwe kunstenaars te ontdekken en ons collectief te herscholen.

Mogen we van vrouwelijke regisseurs films met een vrouwelijke blik verwachten en verhalen die nog niet verteld zijn?

SCIAMMA: Ik zie toch heel veel opportuniteiten

voor nieuwe fictie, voor nieuwe vormen, nieuwe emoties, nieuwe trajecten, nieuwe beelden, nieuwe overtuigingen en nieuwe verhalen over nieuwe relatievormen. Ik begrijp niet goed waarom niet iedereen zich op dat onontgonnen terrein begeeft.

Le quatrième film de Céline Sciamma fut le premier à concourir à Cannes où il a remporté le prix du meilleur scénario. Nombreux furent les critiques à estimer que Portrait de la jeune fille en feu méritait un prix plus prestigieux. C’est une Palme d’Or qui aurait dû récompenser le meilleur drame romantique de l’année.

Les Halles, avec toute leur expérience d’événements cocréatifs comme les Assemblées d’Avril, étaient le terreau idéal pour la première édition de cet événement patchwork. Une exposition de sculpture rencontre un dîner conceptualisé, des spectacles, du cinéma, un marché de créateurs, des soirées dédiées aux politiques du plaisir (et de la danse), des réflexions sur les diasporas africaines et des rencontres autour des milles nuances du tissu africain. Pour élaborer le programme Christophe Galent, Directeur, n’était pas seul.

Il a pu compter sur Bwanga Pilipili, comédienne, qui a fait le lien avec les différents collectifs

comme Nymphose, Café Congo ou Roots Events.

Quelle est l’origine de ce projet Africapitales ?

CHRISTOPHE GALENT : C’est dans la ligne du travail des Halles depuis plusieurs années. Bruxelles est une ville de diversité avec une présence marquée de diverses communautés africaines. Des « Afroxellois » pour qui se posent des questions autour de leurs multiples appartenances. Et puis il y a ce programme des Capitales Africaines de la Culture qui a aussi la volonté de s’adresser aux diasporas, ce qui n’est pas simple parce que ça ne veut pas dire la même chose ici et là-bas. C’est un festival qu’on porte ensemble. On inverse le rapport de force habituel entre les opérateurs et les artistes. On va ainsi découvrir tout un tas d’artistes qui créent et qui existent à Bruxelles et en Belgique. C’est un festival où j’aurais voulu venir quand j’étais enfant et auquel mes parents auraient pu assister. Ce sera un temps fort pour des découvertes artistiques, culinaires mais aussi pour partager des idées et des questions sur des thématiques actuelles importantes, comme la migration.

Son ADN, c’est la participation et la cocréation ?

PILIPILI : On est allé à la rencontre

des gens de Bruxelles dans toute sa mixité. Si je vais écouter des femmes et des hommes à Clémenceau, je n’entendrai pas la même chose que sur la place du Châtelain, la rue de la Loi ou la place du Jeu de Balle. Ce qui nous manquait, c’est la représentation dans la fiction de ces voix-là, de ces personnages. On récupère des graines individuelles de parole pour en faire quelque chose.

GALENT : Notre envie, c’est transformer le rapport à la création du côté des artistes et du côté du public. On attend que des propositions émergent de ces rencontres. Il n’y a pas de scène, pas de gradins. On crée les conditions d’une zone floue dans laquelle on peut bricoler quelque chose.

un moment de l’histoire, le ténébreux Bill Callahan se planquait sous le nom de Smog, faux groupe et véritable point de repère pour tous les amateurs de rock bancal et boisé. À l’orée de la country, le dandy à la voix de crooner charmait alors les foules et séduisait les filles – de Cat Power à Joanna Newsom – sans jamais trop en dire sur lui. Secret dans ses chansons, discret dans la vie, l’artiste reprenait finalement son identité.

Depuis 2007, Bill Callahan avance en effet à visage découvert. Désormais marié et jeune papa, il poursuit sa quête d’authenticité à travers les chansons du récent Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest. Imaginé entre les doutes et la peur, ce nouvel album touche à l’extraordinaire avec un sens affûté de la beauté.

Jusqu’en 2013, votre rythme de production était soutenu. Tous les deux ans, un nouveau disque voyait le jour. Cette fois, il a fallu six ans pour concevoir le nouveau Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest. Comment expliquez-vous ce long délai de livraison ?

Dans les premiers instants du nouvel album, il y a la chanson Writing. Avez-vous éprouvé des difficultés à écrire ces dernières années ?

CALLAHAN : Entre le bébé et le mariage, j’ai eu

l’impression de devenir une autre personne.

Musicalement, je ne parvenais plus à extérioriser mes émotions. Comment rassembler mes sentiments dans un ensemble cohérent ? Le matin, je me levais avec l’envie de faire de la musique. J’étais motivé, plein de bonnes résolutions. Puis, mon gosse se réveillait et là, tout me semblait compliqué. L’écriture me demande de la concentration. Or, ces dernières années, les fondations sur lesquelles reposaient mes convictions se sont fissurées. J’ai remis en question tout ce que je pensais savoir. J’ai dû me reconstruire. Faire table rase. Imaginer d’autres façons de me projeter à travers les chansons. Aujourd’hui, je me sens en mesure d’assumer mes différents rôles sociaux. Je m’assume enfin en tant que mari, père et chanteur.

BILL CALLAHAN : La vie m’a imposé un nouveau

rythme : je suis devenu papa et je me suis marié. Ces deux événements ont sérieusement chamboulé le cours de mon existence. Au lendemain de la naissance de mon fils, je suis devenu père à plein temps. Physiquement et mentalement, je n’étais pas dans les bonnes conditions pour travailler sur de nouvelles chansons. Et puis, surtout, je n’avais pas le temps de m’y consacrer pleinement. Pendant de longs mois, j’étais complètement déconnecté de la réalité…

« Être marié et devenir père, ça n’était pas dans mes plans »

Par le passé, les paroles de vos chansons étaient assez cryptiques. Désormais, à l’écoute d’un titre comme Watch Me Get Married, le parallèle avec votre vie personnelle semble évident. Est-ce plus facile pour vous, à 53 ans, de partager votre intimité ?

CALLAHAN : Bien sûr. Pourquoi ?

Parce qu’être marié et devenir père, ce n’était pas dans mes plans. Même si j’avais déjà envisagé cette probabilité, j’étais incapable de me projeter...

Aujourd’hui, mes perspectives ont changé. Ma vie est fondamentalement différente. Je ne peux pas l’ignorer dans mes chansons. Je me vois mal simuler une vie folle et sauvage... Faire transparaître ma réalité dans les chansons, c’est un gage d’honnêteté. Au début, je voulais faire comme si de rien n’était en écrivant sur d’autres choses. Mais je n’arrivais à rien.

Finalement, j’ai compris que Bill-Callahan-lechanteur devait également être marié et avoir un enfant. C’était la seule façon de faire quelque chose de valable.

Après une coupure de six ans, quel était votre état d’esprit à l’heure d’attaquer un nouveau disque ?

CALLAHAN : Rien qu’à l’idée de me retrouver en

studio, j’étais terriblement anxieux. Paradoxalement, j’avais vraiment envie d’enregistrer de nouveaux morceaux. Du coup, j’ai un peu précipité les choses. Habituellement, quand je commence à travailler sur un album, j’ai déjà

une idée bien précise de ce que je veux faire.

Cette fois, je suis arrivé sans vision préconçue.

J’étais un peu paumé. Ma maison de disques m’a alors conseillé de prendre mon temps...

Au point de départ, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest devait être un album en mode guitare-voix...

CALLAHAN : Effectivement. Je voulais enregistrer

un album paisible. Plus que d’habitude encore.

J’ai donc commencé à travailler tout seul avec ma guitare acoustique. Mais comme j’avais le temps, je l’ai pris. Dans l’intervalle, j’ai compris que certains titres méritaient des arrangements. Surtout, je n’avais plus envie d’être seul dans le studio. J’ai donc invité d’autres musiciens à me rejoindre. J’ai sensiblement modifié mes habitudes. Par le passé, si je décidais de me lancer en solitaire, j’y allais jusqu’au bout. Cette fois, j’ai fait un compromis. J’ai accepté de bifurquer en cours de route.

C’est tout nouveau pour moi.

CALLAHAN : Sur les précédents Apocalypse et

Dream River, j’étirais la narration. À chaque disque, je poussais le bouchon un peu plus loin. Mes morceaux devenaient de plus en plus longs. À un moment, j’avais même envisagé d’enregistrer un titre de 22 minutes. Mais récemment, j’ai revu ma copie. J’ai abordé la création sous un autre angle : j’ai réduit la voilure et proposé davantage de compositions.

Je vois ce nouvel album comme un film.

Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest parle de moi aujourd’hui, mais il est entrecoupé de flashback.

Un des nouveaux morceaux s’intitule 747. Ce

chiffre est généralement associé à la firme Boeing. Doit-on y voir un rapport à l’avion ?

CALLAHAN : Oui et non. Le truc, c’est que je fais

des rêves récurrents avec des Boeings 747 dedans… En réalité, cette chanson parle de la vie et de la mort. Avant de l’enregistrer, j’ai traversé des émotions extrêmes. Mon fils est né en mars 2015. Ma mère est décédée d’un cancer en mai 2018. Pour mettre mes sentiments en musique, j’ai utilisé une métaphore aéronautique. Car, quand je suis dans un avion, que le soleil passe par les hublots entre ciel et terre, je me sens à la fois tout proche de la vie et très près de la mort. C’est une impression étrange. Chez moi, ça marche à chaque fois...

Is it true that the most radical guitar album of the year was made by four youngsters from London who just graduated from the BRIT School? You can find it out this week at the Beursschouwburg. — TOM ZONDERMAN

RIT School alumni generally don’t shy away from the spotlight – Adele, Amy Winehouse, anybody? But that is precisely what the young guys in Black Midi did after graduating from the renowned music school in London. The nerdy guitar slingers built a reputation as an “it” band at the hip underground club The Windmill, but until recently they barely gave any interviews, would only occasionally put the odd song online, and never joined the Instagram story craze. All that only fed the hype even more, of course.

There was no conscious strategy, it was just a question of priorities,

Earlier this year, somebody on the Red Hand Files website asked Nick Cave to take the pulse of rock ‘n’ roll, and Dr. Cave’s alarming conclusion was that it is...dying.

MORGAN SIMPSON: Gosh, yes. Well,

Nick Cave undoubtedly has very intelligent things to say about that.

But rock is such a broad concept. It isn’t either black or white.

CAMERON PICTON: That’s funny.

There has always been this intense debate about who invented rock ‘n’ roll. Be we can be the ones to bury it! (Laughs)

Backbiters say that hip hop is much more radical than rock music nowadays.

SIMPSON: Hip hop has always been

singer Geordie Greep, guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, drummer Morgan Simpson, and bassist Cameron Picton explained. Their album debut Schlagenheim didn’t win the Mercury Prize, but proved that the Black Midi hype – unheard-of for a guitar band today – was not unfounded. Their music is impetuous, but also so new and radical that it makes rock ‘n’ roll sound fresh again. During their live shows, moreover, Black Midi play with the attitude of radical jazz cats, using plenty of improvisations to keep their creations lively – not to say unrecognisable. It makes them all the more exciting.

radical, rappers have always wanted to create new things. But you see ups and downs there too.

PICTON: What I like about hip hop is the way that it influences pop music.

The sound of the trap beats, the Auto-Tune. Auto-Tune has existed for a while, but it has only been taken seriously since rappers started using it frequently. It is only a matter of time before we start using Auto-Tune too. (Laughs)

The medieval font in your artwork has already that hip-hop feel.

PICTON: That was intentional.

Everyone is using gothic fonts like that now. The difference is that ours is a cheap free font: Lucida Blackletter. It looks awful, but it is so bad that it’s good.

“They sound like everything and nothing I have ever heard,” somebody commented on the infamous YouTube video of your performance at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves 2018.

PICTON: That’s a big compliment.

Thank you.

Does it feel like you are doing something new?

PICTON: I would say: no. Pretty much all the ground that can be covered in music, apart from electronic music, has generally been covered.

SIMPSON: I don’t think anything is ever really original. It is a combination of influences that we blend together in a certain way that no other artist has done before. From the church bands I joined at the age of five to Geordie’s love for Talking Heads and krautrock, and Cameron’s fling with Danny Brown.

Did you learn that nothing is really new at the BRIT School?

PICTON: I had drawn that conclusion

earlier on, but the BRIT School did certainly cemented that idea and provided historical explanations for it. One of the ways in which Morgan and I discovered music was by dissecting all the influences on a particular artist that we liked – thanks to the internet, of course, because we did everything via pirating. If you do that intensively, you soon start seeing connections and figuring out who rips off who.

Who did you rip off?

SIMPSON: Initially, noise pioneers

like Swans and Boredoms. That was before Cameron joined the band.

Geordie, Matt, and I made droney, twenty-minute tracks. Epic!

Cameron was the last piece of the puzzle. He added the groove.

One thing that keeps your music raw and fresh is the way you play your songs live: with a jazz attitude.

CAMERON PICTON:

“I spent all my cash by the time I got to Schlagenheim,” we hear in “Western”. Where is Schlagenheim?

PICTON: Geordie came up with that word. It’s an imaginary place. He loves Sergio Leone’s westerns. So now you know why he wears those wacky cowboy hats onstage.

SIMPSON: The songs provide a

structure, but we want as much freedom as possible within that framework. I think I have the most freedom.

HARTENKLOP De kunst die in Obsessions eindeloos herhaalt, uitdiept en zo op kernen stoot, is behalve heel direct en poppy (tatoeages, Lambik, de Batmobile, B.A. Baracus, Dragon Ball Z...) vooral diepmenselijk. Kijk naar de fichekaartjes van Benoît Monjoie, die voorzien zijn van nu eens grappige, dan weer hartverscheurende, bijna terloopse zinnetjes. Of naar het werk dat Dominique Théate op de huid zit. Zijn hilarische én bijtende verhaal, dat hij met Dominique Goblet in het boek L’amour dominical goot, neemt hier de vorm aan van

tekeningen en maskers – van onder meer Hulk Hogan, de figuur die zijn stiefvader vertegenwoordigt, de ‘held’ die hij zag toen hij ontwaakte uit de coma die hem aan een handicap ketende. Die maskers keren terug bij Sarah Albert, bij Marcel Schmitz, de ‘urbatect’ van stad-van-karton-en-tape FranDisco, en in de bezwerende textielkunst van Barbara Massart.

De maskerade is geen toeval. La “S” Grand Atelier ambieert niet minder dan een transformatie. Bij haar residenten en bij het brede publiek, dat zijn vooroordelen keihard

Obsessions is een versnelde hartenklop, een artistiek en menselijk avontuur gecounterd ziet. Obsessions doet dat op ontroerende, grappige, onthutsende en overrompelende wijze. En dat heeft alles te maken met de onnoemelijke energie die vrijkomt wanneer al de scheppende krachten achter deze expo elkaar ontmoeten. Zoals de crew van het MIMA, die doet wat hij altijd doet: de puntjes op de i zetten. Zoals Pakito Bolino, opperhoofd van Le Dernier Cri, die een magistrale doodsreutel slaakt met Pascal Leyder. Of zoals François De Jonge – van Brussels waanzinnigste zine Super-Structure – die met Sybille Deligne een verbluffende scenografie heeft bedacht, die zich soms gedeisd houdt en andere keren fors uithaalt. En zoals curator Bertrand Léonard, zelf al vier jaar begeleider in La “S”, die ons hier met een nieuwe obsessie opzadelt. Hij weet dat een mentale handicap voor de buitenwereld vaak slechts één gezicht draagt. Terwijl het er vele unieke zijn. Tegelijk delen we vrijheidsdrang, fragiliteit en de occasionele obsessie.

Obsessions is een versnelde hartenklop, een artistiek en menselijk avontuur dat je midscheeps raakt, een obsessie waar wij nooit vanaf willen.

et is niet de eerste keer dat de onbegrensde kracht van La “S” Grand Atelier aan ons wordt geopenbaard.

Het artistieke laboratorium in Vielsalm vormt al 25 jaar een veilige omgeving voor zijn residenten, allemaal kunstenaars met een mentale handicap. En een uitdagende, wanneer de buitenwereld wordt uitgenodigd om er artistiek grenzen te komen verleggen.

Zo zijn onder anderen de rebellen van Frémok, het eigenzinnige Brusselse uitgeefplatform dat zich van de conventies van het beeldverhaal geen sikkepit aantrekt, er kind aan huis. Met als resultaat een resem publicaties die “een kunstenaar met een mentale handicap” (zoals Dominique Théate en Marcel Schmitz) met “een kunstenaar met een normale handicap” (zoals Dominique Goblet en Thierry Van Hasselt) aan elkaar koppelen.

Behalve via die beeldverhalen – gepubliceerd onder de imprint Knock Outsider Komiks – verschijnen de artistieke avonturen van de La “S”-residenten ook aan een steeds groeiend publiek in de vorm van concerten (check Choolers Division), films (check Adolpho Avril en Barbara Massart) en tentoonstellingen, zoals de voorbije jaren in Le Brass en Art et Marges.

Maar waar het MIMA nu de schouders onder zet, dit zevende hoofdstuk van een bedwelmend lofdicht aan de onbegrensde kunsten, overtreft de stoutste dromen.

Dat heeft natuurlijk te maken met het waanzinnig goede werk van de kunstenaars die La “S” Grand Atelier met een stilaan ijzersterke reputatie opzadelen en dat intussen te vinden is in de belangrijkste art-brutcollecties van de wereld. In Obsessions krijgt dat werk alle ruimte om de vleugels uit te slaan. Alexandre Hecks Paint-illustraties bijvoorbeeld, die de iconografische drievuldigheid van huizen, auto’s en dood eren, worden opgeblazen tot een zinderende installatie. De houtsnedes die Adolpho Avril maakte met meestergraveur Olivier Deprez worden hier in een ‘kijkvolume’ tentoongesteld: niet de prints, maar de gegraveerde houten platen. Omdat het proces even belangrijk is als waar dat uiteindelijk toe leidt. Omdat de samenwerkingen die door La “S” Grand Atelier worden aangeknoopt een even menselijke als artistieke ervaring zijn.

Le chapitre 7 de l’ode que dédie le Mima aux arts sans limites s’intitule Obsessions. Le musée de Molenbeek et La « S » Grand Atelier s’enfoncent au plus profond de l’âme de l’artiste outsider, et en ressortent avec une aventure humaine qui réchauffe le cœur.

On imagine qu’à l’instar de votre protagoniste Marta, vous vous êtes plongée tête la première dans des centaines d’articles rapportant des féminicides sordides. Avez-vous, comme elle, eu le sentiment de perdre pied, de devenir cinglée ?

CÉLINE DELBECQ : Bien sûr. La pièce est d’abord partie d’une envie d’écrire sur la jalousie et la possessivité. En rédigeant, j’essayais de me nourrir non pas de matière intellectuelle mais surtout de sensations réelles, de descriptions de faits. C’est ainsi que je suis tombée sur tous ces massacres de femmes sur un blog belge qui s’appelle Stop Féminicides. De fil en aiguille, j’ai pris conscience d’un phénomène mondial qui pourtant est très difficilement entendable.

C’est toute la question de la spécificité de ce massacre. Certains mouvements militants bataillent pour que le mot féminicide entre dans la loi. Partagez-vous ce combat ?

DELBECQ : Je pense qu’il faut commencer par

éduquer nos fils, leur dire de garder leurs pulsions pour eux. Ensuite, je trouve important que le mot féminicide entre dans la langue quotidienne parce que c’est en disant le mot qu’on le fait exister. En ce qui concerne la loi, ça n’est pas mon domaine. Je pense personnellement que si un homme tue sa femme, c’est parce qu’elle est une femme. On se situe dans toute une tradition de possessivité de l’homme sur la femme : la femme porte le nom de son père avant d’appartenir à son mari. Les lois concernant les femmes ont pour beaucoup été

pensées par des hommes. Le féminicide n’est pas reconnu par la loi alors que le racisme, lui, est considéré comme un mobile de crime, par exemple.

Lorsqu’il y a féminicide, on évoque souvent le crime passionnel. Encore une fois, le vocabulaire d’usage participe à excuser l’acte ?

DELBECQ : J’ai moi-même déjà été prise au piège

de ces imaginaires romantiques. J’ai honte de le dire aujourd’hui, mais quand Bertrand Cantat a tué Marie Trintignant, j’ai pensé : non seulement il perd l’amour de sa vie, mais il se retrouve en taule. Cette vision romantique est si profondément ancrée dans nos mœurs que dès qu’on y touche, on passe pour des féministes dérangeantes. Je me souviens d’un ami à moi qui questionnait mon sentiment de révolte en arguant que depuis l’affaire Weinstein, ça n’est pas facile d’être un homme aujourd’hui. Ça m’a mis en rage parce que je me suis dit : mais qu’est-ce qu’il n’entend pas que moi j’entends si fort ?

« C’est en disant le mot qu’on le fait exister »

L’écriture et la mise en scène de votre spectacle ont-elles apporté des éléments de réponse à cette question lancinante ?

DELBECQ : Je n’ai même pas cherché la réponse.

J’ai choisi de mettre en scène ce silence. Vers la fin du spectacle Marta écrit en dernier recours au Roi Philippe qui ne répond pas. Elle a le réflexe d’écrire à Papa et l’absence de réponse du Roi représente le silence du patriarcat. Elle se retrouve donc emmurée dans un silence qui

la rend folle – du moins aux yeux des autres qui la considèrent comme cinglée.

Le texte Cinglée a été développé en plein pendant la vague #metoo. Comment avez-vous accueilli ce mouvement de libération de la parole et de prise de conscience ?

DELBECQ : La prise de conscience, je l’ai eu en

2013 au moment du marathon des autrices à Paris (manifeste artistique et politique destiné à répondre au manque de textes féminins portés à la scène, NDLR). D’abord, j’ai pensé que c’était un problème spécifiquement français, avant de comprendre qu’on était dans le même bateau et d’organiser un marathon des autrices à Bruxelles. Je pensais naïvement que le fait de dire le problème allait faire bouger les choses.

Je suis tombée de haut l’année d’après, quand j’ai ouvert les brochures des théâtres et que j’ai vu que rien n’avait changé. C’est pour cela que j’ai du mal à m’engager aujourd’hui (pour la visibilité des femmes dans le monde du théâtre, NDLR) parce que c’est comme si je m’étais déjà fatiguée. Et c’est pareil pour le personnage de Marta, elle a le sentiment que ça ne changera jamais, qu’il vaut mieux abandonner.

Cet été, les féminicides ont été projetés sur le devant de la scène suite aux rassemblements en France autour de l’actrice Eva Darlan et la médiatisation du centième féminicide de l’année. La sortie de votre pièce accompagne presque ce mouvement.

nutile d’entrer « féminicide » dans le moteur de recherche du Larousse en ligne, le mot ne s’y trouve pas. Si « les femmes tuées parce que femmes » n’existent pas plus dans le langage officiel qu’aux yeux de la loi, on dénombre pourtant en Belgique une victime de féminicide tous les huit jours. De quoi abreuver les sordides colonnes Faits Divers de nos journaux. Ces « incidents du jour », Marta Mendes, le nouveau personnage imaginé par Céline Delbecq, les découpe et les collectionne frénétiquement. Alors que les dossiers s’empilent et que l’horreur submerge son bureau, son entourage, démuni, crie au délire.

Mais qui est vraiment cinglée dans toute cette histoire ? Marta ou la société, par son silence insoutenable ? Après l’Enfant Sauvage et Le Vent souffle sur Erzebeth, la dramaturge et metteuse en scène Céline Delbecq, dont les textes sont édités chez Lansman, signe une huitième pièce de théâtre toujours aussi incarnée et à fleur de peau. Dans Cinglée, porté à la scène avec sa compagnie La Bête Noire, elle donne à nouveau voix à un personnage à la sensibilité extrême, se débattant de toutes ses forces avec l’injustice. Car la lucidité est souvent la source de bien des souffrances.

DELBECQ : Ce mouvement me fait halluciner parce que j’ai tellement écrit cette pièce dans le silence et qu’il y est tellement question d’un silence. Tant mieux. Plus on en parle, mieux c’est et on n’en parlera jamais assez.

Vos spectacles partent-ils toujours d’un sentiment d’injustice ? On vous imagine, la rage au ventre, en train de coucher votre texte sur papier. C’est comme ça que vous fonctionnez ?

DELBECQ : Je pense que je ne pourrais pas écrire quelque chose qui me fait rigoler. Souvent quand j’écris, je pleure. Il y a une espèce de colère et d’incompréhension. Je ne sais pas trop si le théâtre m’aide à surmonter cette colère ou s’il ne m’en donne pas davantage (rires). Mais pour me donner l’énergie de travailler si longtemps et si fort, j’ai besoin de me sentir concernée, que ça soit viscéral.

Un clown qui ne fait rire personne s’enfonce dans la folie et le radicalisme. Joker, Lion d’or à Venise, est plus proche de certains films de Scorsese que de la franchise Batman. — NIELS RUËLL

Certains parlent de Joker comme d’un chef-d’œuvre, d’autres crient au crime parce que le film justifierait le passage à l’acte d’hommes blancs frustrés. Ce film de super-méchant est certes polémique, mais aucun des deux arguments ne l’emporte.

Joaquin Phoenix est allé jusqu’à l’extrême, tant physiquement que mentalement, pour rendre l’ennemi juré de Batman aussi mémorable que Jack Nicholson et Heath Ledger. Sa performance est à glacer le sang mais reste difficile à comparer à celle de ses prédécesseurs, car ils incarnaient le terrible farceur amateur de chaos alors que Phoenix s’attache au pauvre type torturé et instable qui le précède. Arthur Fleck est un clown qui ne fait rire personne et qui rêve en vain d’une carrière de comique ou d’un passage dans le talk-show de Murray Franklin, la meilleure performance de Robert De Niro depuis longtemps. Pour ne pas perdre à nouveau les pédales, Fleck doit gober beaucoup de pilules. Sa mère malade ne cesse d’implorer l’aide de l’arrogant politicien milliardaire Thomas Wayne. Alors que, déguisé en clown, il tue trois riches ordures dans le métro, Fleck devient le symbole d’un soulèvement des pauvres contre les riches. Il n’a que faire de la rébellion.

De Batman, il n’est pas question. Le réalisateur Todd Phillips, le cerveau derrière la franchise Very Bad Trip, ne cherche pas du tout à faire le lien avec les productions de super-héros de Warner et DC Comics. Il préfère suivre deux classiques de Scorsese : Taxi Driver et The King of Comedy. Sa ville

de Gotham est une copie du New York sombre du tournant des années quatre-vingt. Grâce à Phoenix, Joker s’avère le portrait captivant d’un solitaire abandonné par la société qui s’approche toujours plus de l’abîme et qui finit par tomber dedans. Mais la mythologie Batman était-elle nécessaire pour raconter cette histoire ? Pour le côté dérivé de Taxi Driver avec Joaquin Phoenix dans le rôle principal, Joker n’a rien à envier à You Were Never Really Here de Lynne Ramsay. Bon film mais pas un chefd’œuvre.

Zowel de ijzingwekkende Joaquin Phoenix als regisseur Todd Phillips (The hangover) laat het superheldenuniversum voor wat het is, en gaat op zoek naar de zenuw die Scorsese met Taxi driver en The king of comedy blootlegde. Phoenix speelt de labiele zielenpoot Arthur Fleck, een mislukte clown die zwaar aan de pillen zit, en die na een moordpartij het symbool wordt van een opstand van de armen tegen de rijken. Joker boeit als portret van een loner die almaar dichter de afgrond nadert, maar heb je daar Batman voor nodig?

Goed, maar geen meesterwerk.

Is Joker a masterpiece or has the Golden Lion in Venice condoned carnage? Neither. Both a chilling Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips (the brains behind the Hangover franchise) have left the superhero universe to its own devices and gone in search of the nerve that Scorsese struck with Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Phoenix plays the unstable sad sack Arthur Fleck, a failed clown on heavy medication. After a murder, he becomes the symbol of a rebellion of the poor against the rich. Joker fascinates as a portrait of a loner who sinks ever further into the abyss, but do you need Batman for that? Good, but not a masterpiece.

Van deze politieke Franse praatfilm krijg je heimwee naar de hoogdagen van The West Wing, de schitterende tv-serie waarmee Aaron Sorkin in de coulissen van het Witte Huis dook. Dat is niet in het voordeel van de film. Los daarvan zal het tijdens de vertoning niet in je opkomen om Facebook te checken of te beginnen piekeren over lekkende kranen. Deze politieke fabel, die af en toe lijkt op een verfilmd theaterstuk, is best onderhoudend. Ze blijft bij gebrek aan urgentie alleen niet lang hangen. De hoofdrollen zijn voor twee acteurs die vaak, al dan niet terecht, worden bewierookt. De 67-jarige Fabrice Luchini speelt de burgemeester van Lyon, een man die het goed meent en het klappen van de zweep kent, maar na dertig jaar last heeft van een acuut gebrek aan nieuwe en goede ideeën. De 31-jarige Anaïs Demoustier speelt een niet overdreven ambitieuze, ravissante filosofe met de opdracht om de burgemeester weer op ideeën te brengen. Het botst tussen jong en oud, man en vrouw, doener en denker, theorie en praktijk, maar daar kunnen beiden hun voordeel mee doen. Hun discussies zijn amusant en leerrijk. Niet dom. (NR)

D’après la Cinematek, le cinéma d’observation militant et poétique de Michel Khleifi montre la réalité dans laquelle vit le peuple palestinien, entre exil, mémoire et occupation. Ce réalisateur palestinien opère depuis Bruxelles depuis les années septante. La Cinematek a restauré un grand nombre de ses films et les projettera dans les semaines à venir. Pendant plusieurs semaines, Flagey reprendra Hikayat al-jawaher al-thalatha ou Le Conte des trois diamants. Dans ce film, présenté à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs cannoise en 1995, Youssef, 12 ans, a recours à son imagination pour échapper à la violence et à la misère d’un camp de réfugiés dans la bande de Gaza. Son père est en prison, son frère vit caché. Pour gagner l’amour de la gitane Aïda, il lui faut retrouver trois diamants perdus. Ce conte de fées qui part d’une sombre réalité est un peu moralisateur et dépassé, mais cela n’altère en rien le respect qu’inspire Khleifi. (NR)

Alice et le Maire donne envie de revoir la magnifique série À la Maison-Blanche (The West Wing). Ce n’est pas très flatteur pour cette fable politique française, bien qu’elle soit très divertissante. Fabrice Luchini incarne le maire de Lyon, un homme bien intentionné qui, après 30 ans, est à court d’idées. Anaïs Demoustier interprète la philosophe qui doit lui en fournir. Il y a conflit entre jeunesse et vieillesse, homme et femme, faiseur et penseur, mais ils en bénéficient tous les deux. Plutôt amusant.

Cinematek restaureerde de militante, poëtische films van Michel Khleifi, een Palestijn die sinds de jaren 1970 in Brussel woont. In Flagey wordt nu Het verhaal van de drie diamanten vertoond, in 1995 nog deel van de Quinzaine des réalisateurs. In die film probeert de 12-jarige Youssef via zijn verbeelding te ontsnappen aan de ellende in een vluchtelingenkamp op de Gazastrook. Om de liefde van zigeunermeisje Aïda te winnen, moet hij drie diamanten terugvinden. Een tikje belerend, maar Khleifi verdient uw respect.

Alice et le maire makes you nostalgic for the brilliant White House series The West Wing. But that doesn’t work to the advantage of this French political fable, entertaining though it is. Fabrice Luchini plays the mayor of Lyon, a well-meaning man who is struggling to come up with new ideas after thirty years in office. Anaïs Demoustier plays a philosopher tasked with solving this problem. There is a clash between young and old, man and woman, doer and thinker, but they both benefit in their own way. Quite amusing.

Cinematek has restored the militant and poetic films by Michel Khleifi, a Palestinian director who has lived in Brussels since the 1970s. The Story of the Three Diamonds, which was screened in the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in 1995, is now being screened at Flagey. We see how the 12-year-old Youssef uses his imagination to escape from the misery of living in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. To win the love of the Roma girl Aïda, he must find three diamonds. Though it is somewhat didactic, Khleifi deserves respect.

Small moments of daily life The American photographer Henry Wessel spent almost half a century documenting life in the American West with his camera. A year after his death, Fondation A Stichting is devoting a retrospective to his oeuvre.

A car drives through the American suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area. At the wheel is Henry Wessel (born 1942). He has his Leica at the ready. When he spots two children playing, he doesn’t hesitate for a second and pushes the button. Framed by the car window and bathed in Californian sunlight, Wessel shoots a cinematic image. “Who are these boys and where are they going?”, you wonder. A story creeps into each of Wessel’s photos and makes you think about what happened before and after it was taken. This sets him apart from traditional documentary photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose images are clearly set and take place within the frame.

Fondation A Stichting has devoted

an entire wall to Wessel’s drive-by shootings: each of them is an illustration of the importance of mundane observations. His series Incidents, twenty-seven pictures without dates or place names, likewise underscores his talent to capture images of surprising moments that simply want to be told.

Wessel moved from New York to the San Francisco Bay Area after he visited the region in 1971 and was struck by the light, the variety of landscapes, and the urban centres. The area and its distinctive sunshine are a feature in many of his photographs.

Rather than using telephoto lenses or concealing himself from his subject, Wessel’s photographs are taken from up close, with a

wide-angle lens, and very much in the moment, when something strikes him. As Wessel describes it: “I wander around until something catches my eye, trusting my instinct and taking a photograph when there are no words to describe an experience.”

Wessel is perhaps not as famous as Stephen Shore, Robert Adams, or Bernd and Hilla Becher, but he also took part in the landmark exhibition “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape” at George Eastman House in Rochester in 1975.

But Wessel’s oeuvre is more than an unromanticised view of industrialized landscapes. He makes portraits and excels at street photography. His photos focus on composition, they play with light and shadow, and have a great sense of humour and drama.

His exceptional photographic technique, in which he manipulates his black and white film both in the camera and in the dark room, results in images with a varied range of greyscales, whereby he avoids hard black and white contrasts. Thanks to this technique, Wessel’s night-time walks yield cinematic tableaux bathed in soft light.

Henry Wessel passed away in September last year. “Summer Light” is Fondation A Stichting’s beautiful tribute to the “Photo Buddha” – a nickname Wessel was given by his friend Lee Friedlander, because he always smiled.

Meteen valt op dat hier de klant niet om de oren wordt geslagen met veel, meer en spectaculairder, maar wel een beperkt en zinvol aanbod krijgt voorgezet van gerechten die zich inspireren op het moment. Bij ons bezoek lagen er goed tien gesuikerde bereidingen in de koeltoog: glutenvrije sinaasappelcake, financiers, brownies met fleur de sel, muffins, abrikozentaartjes bedekt met een ganache van witte chocolade… Allemaal heel verleidelijk! Vanuit de zaal kijk je trouwens binnen in het bakkersatelier, een zeldzaamheid die bewijst dat men hier niets te verbergen heeft. Net zo wonderlijk is de wil van de oprichtster van de plek,

Lors de notre visite chez La Petite Parisienne, les préparations patientaient derrière la vitre : cake sans gluten à l’orange, financiers, brownies à la fleur de sel, muffins,… On aime l’approche 100% bio (la première pâtisserie du genre à Bruxelles !), low sugar et anti-gaspi (via l’appli Too Good to Go). Du mardi au vendredi, on y déguste d’excellents sandwichs – baguettes signées Hopla Geiss – mais le lundi, c’est le jour des quiches. Deux variations dont la version fenouil, carottes et emmental (7 €) s’avère délicieuse. Côté boisson, on opte pour la très bonne limonade maison (3,50 €). Enfin, le cake chocolat-vanille (4,40€) ne lésine pas sur le chocolat mais, là aussi, le sucre reste sage.

de Parisienne Katia die nog aan de prestigieuze Ferrandi-school studeerde, om een biologisch assortiment aan te bieden – als eerste onder de Brusselse patisserieën. We prijzen in één beweging ook de low sugar-benadering en de wil om de strijd aan te binden met verspilling, via het lidmaatschap van de app Too Good To Go, die onverkochte producten aan scherpe prijzen aanbiedt. Heerlijk is ook het feit dat je in een zaaltje, een soort hedendaags theesalon waar ruwe bakstenen muren meubels in blank hout omzomen, met goed twintig mensen ter plekke kan lunchen. Van dinsdag tot en met vrijdag kan je hier terecht voor uitstekende en rijkelijk belegde halve baguettes – van bij Hopla Geiss – maar op maandag, de dag van ons bezoek, staan er quiches op het menu. We konden kiezen tussen twee versies en gingen voor de groentetaart met venkel, wortel en emmentaler (€7) en een kleine, frisse salade met radijs, eetbare bloemen en een vinaigrette. Daarbij dronken we een uitstekende huisgemaakte limonade (€3,50) met een vleugje agavesiroop. Het dessert, een gulle marmercake (€4,40), voerde ons terug naar onze kindertijd.

Hooray, Brussels has its first 100% organic cake shop! We love its lowwaste, low-sugar approach. The counter contains a mouth-watering display of gluten-free orange cake, financiers, fleur de sel brownies, muffins, apricot tarts topped with white chocolate ganache, etc.

Tuesday to Friday, they do excellent sandwiches but Monday, the day we went, is quiche day. The one we tried with fennel, carrot, and Emmenthal (€7) was delicious, served with a beautifully fresh little salad, slices of radish, edible flowers, and vinaigrette. For dessert, we had a sumptuous chocolate and vanilla marble cake (€4.40) with plenty of chocolate but not too much sugar.

Met Snøw maakten een aantal K.A.K.K.E.R.S. een theatervoorstelling voor klimaatkløters. De Brusselse kunstenaar Yves Zurstrassen zet al een paar tientallen jaren die wijsheid van zijn grote muzikale held om in de praktijk. Sinds zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in Brussel in 1982 heeft de schilder zich laag na laag meer vrijheid verworven.
