Afterwork ‘qualité de l’air’ Où le cœur de la ville bat-il la chamade lorsque sonnent les douze coups de minuit ? Chaque semaine, BRUZZ explore la nightlife bruxelloise. Nous nous sommes posté rue de la Loi où un apéro engagé revendiquait de l’air respirable.

Le GRACQ, Critical Mass et Bruxsel’Air ont organisé un apéro rue de la Loi afin de soulever la question de la mauvaise qualité de l’air à Bruxelles.

Tout le monde était invité à venir boire un verre entre les blocs de béton protégeant les travaux. 700 personnes se sont présentées et l’endroit est rapidement devenu trop étroit, débordant sur le parc adjacent. La bière fut vite épuisée. Sur les bandes libres en bordure, les voitures empestaient. Le lendemain, j’ai eu le nez bouché et un léger mal de gorge. À 22 heures, tout était rangé et les derniers invités buvaient les bières qu’ils avaient apportées.

Comment êtes-vous arrivés ici ?

DANIELA : Je voyage à Bruxelles toute seule pour visiter

le plus de musées possible avec mon carnet de croquis en main. Je me promenais et je me suis retrouvée là.

SÉBASTIEN : Je fais du vélo ! Je suis actif dans le cadre de Critical Mass. Je parlais très fort alors elle a cru que je m’adressais à elle.

Avez-vous une voiture ?

SÉBASTIEN : J’ai une voiture de fonction. Je suis chef de

projet dans une boîte de finances. En fait, je préférerais avoir de l’argent à la place de cette voiture, mais notre système fiscal est merdique. La pression de la voiture sur la ville est trop forte. Il faut que les choses changent.

DANIELA : Ma mère m’a donné sa voiture il y a six ans.

Je l’ai toujours. Là où je vis en Allemagne, c’est difficile de faire du vélo. C’est dangereux. Ici, à Bruxelles, je n’oserais pas rouler à vélo.

Lonnie Holley MEDICINE SOUNDS

“The archive of your brain is within you.” Lonnie Holley repeats the sentence to make sure that we understood it properly. “If you hear my music, it is taking you back to my babyhood, to that little Tonky McElroy that was raised by foster parents and grew up at the state fairground and the drive-in theatre, to me being abused day after day, being imprisoned in the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children [which in previous interviews he has repeatedly described as a slave camp, tp]. But once I put all that (negative) energy out of my brain and into works of art, my life changed,” continues the 69-year-old African American artist who was kidnapped by a family acquaintance and traded for liquor 65 years ago. The traumas of his youth in the segregated city of Birmingham, Alabama can now be seen in the form of sandstone statues and assemblages of found materials in famous American museums, and you can hear about them on his three spoken word albums that are full of poetic reflections and improvised piano playing. “Every time we turn around, we receive another invitation from Europe, so we are doing something right,” Holley reflects modestly on his late musical breakthrough when we FaceTime him at his home in Atlanta. “I like the way you put it: meditative. But I prefer to call it ‘medicine sounds’.

Music allows us to heal our universal purpose more quickly than other art forms. It has the effect of throwing a stone in the ocean, creating waves.” Holley has been making music and singing since he was a little kid, he continues. “But before 2010 I never got into a studio space. Now, I see my music as another avenue of exhibiting. I always looked at myself as the artist that would be put on show and judged.” This assumption likewise goes back to his childhood: “At the state fairground, animals were kept in cages, and burlesque dancers performed in little galleries. I refer to it in a piece called African in a Cage Gasping for Air (1988).” It was made out of garbage. A more recent work, Blood On the Rock Pile (2003), refers to being beaten up when in reformatory school, only now the blood is replaced by red paint. In just the same vein, songs like “I Woke Up in a Fucked-Up America” and “I Snuck Off the Slave Ship”, both on his last album MITH (2018), bring to mind some of the darkest moments in his country’s history and try to offer an antidote for an uncertain future that might be shaped by another series of white supremacists. “Remember Dr. (Martin Luther) King said: ‘I’ve been to the mountain top’, but he never said how many mountain tops we would have to struggle over.” — TOM PEETERS

Le concert d’ouverture de la 16e édition du Marni Jazz Festival réunit le guitariste hongrois Gábor Gadó et la trompettiste française Airelle Besson. Avant que le Standards Trio de l’Américain Kurt Rosenwinkel (photo) ne clôture le festival dix jours plus tard, une série de concerts mettront à l’honneur la guitare, instrument célébré cette année. Lorenzo Di Maio injecte des cordes dans son trio, Alain Pierre agrémente de percussions ses improvisations à la guitare à 6 et 12 cordes et Guillaume Vierset, qui vient d’accoucher d’un disque d’Americana, présente son nouveau projet Edges to Edges. Magasin 4, de Brusselse concerttempel die zonder verpinken uw interne huishouding verbouwt met avant-noise, oi!-punk, sludge, industrial, grindcore, doom en andere zware metalen, viert het hele najaar lang zijn 25e verjaardag. De met drilboorgitaren, cirkelzaagsynths en sloopkogeldrums op smaak gebrachte verjaardagscake wordt opgediend onder de even simpele als duidelijke noemer 25 years of M4. Het Belgische powertrio Big Fat Lukum mag het vuur aan de lont steken. Onderweg komen onder meer Ritual Necromancy, Soror, Lydia Lunch, Acid Mothers Temple, Bob Log III, Cocaine Piss (photo), Sham 69 en de paardenfluisteraars van Frau Blücher & The Drünken Horses mee de kaarsjes uitblazen. Plazey! trapte jarenlang de zomer op gang, maar rondt vanaf nu de grote vakantie af, en dat in één weekend. Op vrijdag mag muziekcentrum VOLTA aanstekelijk talent als Phoenician Drive en Sylvie Kreusch uitnodigen.

Zaterdag is urban, met dans, hiphop en een openluchtvertoning van de film Étangs Noirs. Zondag ligt de nadruk op familie-entertainment met een uitgebreid kinderprogramma en optredens van onder meer Bert en de Bomma’s en het Malinese duo Amadou & Mariam voor de mama’s en de papa’s, die hun kroost ’s anderendaags weer aan de schoolpoort kunnen droppen. “Een geschikte remedie tegen de treurnis thuis is mosterd”

Daarom sla ik, wanneer ik uit het oosten huiswaarts keer, altijd een ruime voorraad in van een tube of negen. Een aantal daarvan is bestemd om bij wijze van souvenir cadeau te doen aan familie en vrienden. Lekker goedkoop en toch origineel. Het is uiteraard niet zeker dat iedereen dringend meer mosterd nodig heeft, maar wel dat nog niemand over mosterd in een tube beschikt. Dat die gekke Deutschsprachigen al eens ‘Dijon’ op hun Senf zetten, zoals de Britten ‘Gouda’ op hun plakjeskaas, kan de ontvanger van het streekproduct wel in verwarring brengen omtrent je reisbestemming. Maar dat is niets dat met een woordje uitleg niet kan worden verholpen. En bovenal is zo’n tube Senf een souvenir voor je teruggekeerde zelf. Vraag de bakker op de hoek om je brood eens niet te snijden. Zaag er zoals op vakantie zelf een dikke homp af. Duw een royale veeg okergele mosterd uit de tube, en schilder een palet vol scherpe reisherinneringen tot je weer met je thuiskomst bent verzoend.

Dan is er dat moment waarop je na je vakantie opnieuw je huis binnenstapt. Op welk uur van de dag dat ook is, altijd ligt melancholie op de loer. Een verklaring daarvoor is niet makkelijk te geven, al gebeurt er natuurlijk iets verschrikkelijks bij het overschrijden van je drempel: er komt een einde aan de weken die het hoogtepunt van het jaar hoorden te zijn. Tijdens je reis flitste nog herhaaldelijk door je hoofd hoe je leven er eigenlijk ook zou kunnen of moeten uitzien, maar bij thuiskomst word je met verrassend gemak terug in de oude routine geduwd. Je speurt het onverschillige huis af om vast te stellen dat het je niet heeft gemist, en laadt dan maar meteen de valiezen in de wastrommel om de pijn te verdoven. Het postpakket dat intussen is aangekomen, schenkt niet de verhoopte voldoening.

Sinds de digitale revolutie is zelfs de stapel kranten verdwenen waarin je vroeger kon lezen wat er tijdens je afwezigheid allemaal was gebeurd in het land. In de plaats daarvan staar je naar de stapel boeken die je op reis niet hebt kunnen uitlezen.

Een bezoek aan je ouders zou eventueel afleiding kunnen bieden, maar die wonen te ver. Vrienden zijn zelf nog op vakantie of al aan het werk. Je moet het dus allemaal alleen zien te verwerken. Dan volgt het dieptepunt wanneer je naar de afstandsbediening grijpt om de televisie aan te zetten waarvan je een paar dagen geleden nog het bestaan was vergeten, toen je je kinderen met de fiets de Mont Ventoux op sleurde, gegrilde slang at in Marrakesh, of van je rijke vrienden mocht waterskiën rond hun palazzo in Venetië.

Een geschikte remedie tegen die treurnis van de terugkeer thuis is mosterd. In het Duits heet mosterd Senf. Dat is een onhandig in elkaar gedraaid en dus geestig gehandicapt woord, dat minstens twee letters mist.

Bovendien wordt die Senf ten oosten van de Rijn verkocht in lange, dikke metalen tubes die erg lekker in de hand liggen. Dat is hilarisch, omdat wij nauwelijks iets uit tubes eten terwijl we dat heimelijk graag zouden willen, en praktisch, omdat tubes vaak veel handiger zijn dan potjes. Om al die redenen is Senf meer dan mosterd. Wie Senf gebruikt, smeert ook een laagje exotische gekkigheid tussen kaas en brood.

Quand Pierre Nisse retourne dans la ville de son enfance, c’est pour rendre visite à sa maman et supporter le Standard. L’occasion pour BRUZZ de percer le mystère qui plane sur l’acteur bruxellois au visage ténébreux. « Liège est une ville où les gens sont très excessifs ». — SOPHIE SOUKIAS ○ PHOTOS: HELEEN RODIERS

Q

uand j’arrive à Liège, la première personne à qui j’adresse la parole a souvent un putain d’accent. Quand j’entends ça, ça y est, je me sens à la maison », sourit Pierre Nisse, en respirant l’air de Liège à pleins poumons alors que nous dévalons les escaliers de l’imposante gare futuriste signée Calatrava. « Je serais vraiment dégoûté de ne pas pouvoir remettre les pieds ici », dit l’acteur de 36 ans, en lice pour un rôle dans la série Baraki, dont les concepteurs,

« Je lui ai toujours tout pardonné parce que c’est quelqu’un d’extrêmement sensible et généreux », dit la maman de Pierre Nisse lorsque nous l’interrogeons sur l’enfance de son fils.

Julien Vargas et Peter Ninane, ont reçu cet été le feu vert de la RTBF pour la scénarisation de vingt épisodes ayant pour décor Liège et Verviers. « Le terme de ‘baraki’ ça ne passe pas du tout à Liège. C’est vraiment insultant. Le défi de la série, c’est que la terminologie ne soit pas mal prise. Que le spectateur comprenne qu’on n’est pas dans la stigmatisation, au contraire », dit Nisse. « Être baraki, c’est avant tout un état d’esprit. Souvent, un baraki aime la mécanique, le Standard, la vie de quartier, rire et s’amuser. Il aime sa région et est fier de ses racines. À Liège, ce sont les barakis qui sont le fondement du bassin métallurgique. Avec le déclin économique, le terme baraki s’est teint d’une connotation négative. Je trouve ça con. Je vous promets que j’ai beaucoup plus appris sur les gens et la vie en me promenant à Sclessin ou à Liège qu’à Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Liège m’a donné le tempérament. »

ŒIL AU BEURRE NOIR « J’ai eu deux fois un flingue sur la tête ici à Liège », lâche l’acteur avec un troublant naturel, en croquant énergiquement dans un sandwich au poulet acheté à l’arrache sur notre chemin vers le centre-ville. « Je ne dis pas ça pour faire le malin mais ça ne m’a rien fait.

Rien du tout ». Peut-être pas si étonnant de la part du boxeur amateur qui s’est toujours frotté à la vie, quitte à se faire bousculer, quitte à se faire mal. « Des coups j’en ai pris », dit le poids plume en s’amusant de la cicatrice qui garnit le milieu de ses sourcils. Un détail qui ajoute au faciès ténébreux de l’acteur, une apparence qu’il travaille volontiers dans ses rôles. « J’ai un œil au beurre noir dans la moitié de mes films », plaisante-t-il. « J’aime l’idée de la blessure qu’on n’explique pas. Ça peut aussi passer par des dents noires. Dans Witz (film de Martin Doyen en salles cet été, NDLR), j’ai un énorme tatouage sur le front ».

Abonné aux personnages décalés aux tendances plus ou moins psychopathiques (Laissez Bronzer les Cadavres, La Trêve, Falco, The Incident,…), Pierre Nisse raffole de ces rôles qu’il estime « pudiques, intéressants et épais ». « Je ne sais pas pourquoi je me retrouve tellement là-dedans. C’est instinctif et c’est aussi inspiré d’observations que j’ai pu faire

étant gamin. Il y avait dans les énervements de mon père quelque chose d’un peu grandiloquent, j’y voyais un côté comique dans des situations dramatiques. Ma grand-mère, une petite femme toute séchée, moqueuse et un peu toquée, m’a inspiré des personnages enfermés dans leur monde et originellement blessés ».

Le naturel et la force narrative que dégage Pierre Nisse n’ont pas échappé au réalisateur franco-bruxellois Emmanuel Marre qui, en 2018, mettait l’acteur au cœur de son essai filmique D’un Château L’Autre. Dans ce moyen-métrage qui valut aux deux hommes d’être récompensés du Grand Prix au prestigieux festival international du film de Locarno, Pierre Nisse incarne un étudiant de Science-Po Paris pris dans le tourbillon des élections présidentielles françaises de 2017, alors qu’il loge chez une septuagénaire dont il s’occupe en guise de loyer. Dans ce docu-fiction saisissant qui met l’improvisation au centre, Pierre Nisse et Francine Atoch, la mère du réalisateur, jouent autant leur personnage qu’ils se jouent eux-mêmes. « Je savais ce que Manu voulait de moi, mais c’est tout ce que je n’aime pas jouer. Là où il

n’y a pas de décalage possible, je souffre, je me sens en impudeur. Voir ma gueule en gros plan dans ce genre de cinéma, c’est dur. Mais cela ne m’empêche pas d’apprécier la qualité intrinsèque du cinéma d’Emmanuel et de prendre un plaisir, peut-être un peu masochiste, à jouer dans ses films », dit Nisse dont la collaboration avec le réalisateur commençait en 2009 avec le court-métrage Michel. Une interprétation sans faute récompensée au Brussels Short Film Festival.

« J’ai beaucoup plus appris sur la vie en me promenant à Sclessin ou à Liège qu’à WoluweSaint-Lambert »

« Avec Manu, on peut expérimenter car il est lui-même en recherche. Je crois de plus en plus en la théorie comme quoi il faut jouer avec les gens avec lesquels on se sent bien. Quand je pense au nombre de fois où j’ai été malheureux en jouant dans des téléfilms vides de sens.

Aujourd’hui, je travaille avec des gens comme Emmanuel Marre, Martine Doyen, Cédric Bourgeois, Alan Deprez ou le performeur Fyl Sang D’or, qui ont des univers qui me parlent et que je trouve assez denses, tristes et forts, peut-être même joyeux. Ce sont des gens qui ont une âme profondément punk ».

MALADE DU STANDARD Arrivés sur l’artère commerçante de la rue Saint-Gilles, Pierre Nisse propose de prendre un verre au café La Pompe, un bar tenu par Marie Frankignoul, une amie de jeunesse. « Marie est une malade du Standard. C’est limite si elle n’attrape pas des boutons en arrivant à Bruxelles », plaisante Nisse en nous présentant l’intéressée. « Alors, vous suivez la star ? », demande-t-elle avant de faire part à Nisse de ses doutes quant au nouveau gardien du club de la ville de Liège. « Je vais toujours voir des matchs du Standard », dit l’acteur

• 2018: D’un Château L’Autre (E. Marre), où il tient le rôle principal, remporte le Grand Prix à Locarno. Prix d’interprétation au FIFF. • 2019: nommé aux Magritte pour son second rôle dans Laissez bronzer les cadavres.

lorsque nous le questionnons. « C’est de loin le club en Belgique où il y a le plus d’ambiance.

L’Union est mon deuxième club, parce qu’il m’en fallait un à Bruxelles et que c’était hors de question que ça soit Anderlecht. Quand je suis au milieu de la foule au Standard, je me sens parmi les miens ».

COUP DE NOSTALGIE Changement de bar. Changement de décor. À la sortie du fameux Carré festif et imbibé de Liège, Pierre Nisse fait remonter ses souvenirs d’adolescent – « C’est ici qu’on venait fumer nos joints » – au milieu des décors hallucinés du Pot au Lait, bar kitch du centre-ville aux allures de galerie d’art, de musée des horreurs et de labyrinthe psychédélique. « Vous voulez une photo de moi avec la truie », balance Nisse en prenant sauvagement la pause avec le buste empaillé de la mascotte du Pot Au Lait. « En parlant de vieille truie, toi, comment tu vas ? », blague Nisse dont la courte apparition dans Dikkenek (la scène du fritkot) en 2006

«Je ne sais pas si c’est bon pour le karma de rebondir sur ses blessures mais ça m’a donné une rage terrible »

signait le début de sa carrière cinématographique. « J’ai eu ma première réplique dans un film ! ». « Ça me met un gros coup de nostalgie à chaque fois que je vois des jeunes », dit Nisse en contemplant la faune adolescente et estudiantine peuplant la terrasse animée du bar. « Je trouve le monde de l’adolescence plus agréable que celui des adultes. Le monde des adultes est un monde qui juge, un monde qui écarte les comportements considérés comme asociaux ou trop spéciaux ».

Le temps file et pour ne pas être en retard au rendez-vous fixé avec la maman de l’acteur, on traverse la Place Saint-Lambert en un éclair.

Nisse nous indique au passage le « banc des héroïnomanes ». « Liège est une ville où les gens sont très excessifs. Il y a un rapport à la came et une misère qui sont typiques des villes de fleuve », dit-il, avant d’ajouter : « Je précise que je n’ai jamais pris d’héroïne, on ne sait jamais ! ».

Au pied des interminables et pittoresques

escaliers de la Montagne de Bueren rappelant Montmartre, une petite dame en robe fleurie et au rouge à lèvres assorti à sa veste de tailleur – « Je me suis un peu maquillée pour l’occasion » – nous attend pour replonger dans l’enfance de son fils cadet. « C’est ma mère qui m’a transmis le vis comica. Elle m’a toujours fort amusé », dit Nisse. « Elle m’a dit de vous dire qu’elle veut que la photo soit belle. Je ne fais que transmettre (rires) ». « Toute ma vie, j’ai monté 93 marches plusieurs fois par jour. Nous habitions sur des escaliers, alors vous savez, j’ai l’habitude ! », dit Marie-Claire Gadeyne alors que nous prenons de la hauteur en direction des coteaux. « Alors vous voulez que je vous parle de Pierre ? », sourit-elle. « Quand il était petit, j’ai tout de suite vu qu’il avait un grand appétit de la vie. Je lui disais que je n’avais pas peur pour lui. Enfant, il était assez espiègle. Il courrait les rues, faisait des blagues qui n’étaient pas toujours de très bon goût. J’étais régulièrement convoquée à l’athénée pour des raisons aussi spéciales les unes que les autres. Je lui ai toujours tout pardonné parce que c’est quelqu’un d’extrêmement sensible et généreux.

C’est mon rayon de soleil ». « Quoique fils de profs (de français, NDLR), ou peut-être à cause de ça, il a commencé à détester l’école. Il avait vraiment une phobie scolaire. Vous savez, le système scolaire tel qu’il est n’est pas adapté à toutes les formes d’intelligence. À quatorze ans, il m’a dit qu’il voulait faire du théâtre, je l’ai inscrit à un cours croyant d’abord à une fantaisie. Mais il s’y est accroché jusqu’à maintenant. »

« Quand je suis au milieu de la foule au Standard, je me sens parmi les miens », dit Nisse en savourant une 25cl au café La Pompe, repère des fans du club liégeois.

SI T’ES PAS DRÔLE, T’ES MORT « De ma première primaire à ma dernière secondaire, j’étais dans les trois derniers de classe », dit Nisse. « Je faisais le clown. Comme a dit un jour José Garcia : ‘Quand t’es dernier de classe, si t’es pas drôle, t’es mort’. C’est à l’école que j’ai commencé à devenir acteur.

Avec le temps, mon côté blagueur s’est transformé en côté punk. J’ai fait le Conservatoire en me disant que c’était peut-être la seule chose que je pouvais réussir ».

En 2007, l’intuition se confirme, le jeune acteur sort avec les honneurs du Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, récompensé du Prix Georges Duquesne pour l’ensemble de ses prestations artistiques. Un itinéraire loin de celui que lui présageait le Conservatoire de Liège lors d’un premier essai à la sortie des secondaires. « À la fin de la première année, les deux profs principaux m’ont dit que je n’étais pas fait pour ce métier. C’était extrêmement violent, je terminais encore une fois dernier de la classe.

Je ne sais pas si c’est bon pour le karma de rebondir sur ses blessures mais ça m’a donné une rage terrible. Je me suis dit intérieurement: un jour, je ferai du cinéma et je vivrai de mon métier et vos gamins, ils payeront huit euros

pour venir me voir ! ».

Après les études, la voie du septième art s’impose naturellement au comédien. « Je n’ai pas vraiment cherché à rentrer dans les circuits du théâtre. Je trouvais les castings de théâtre trop violents », dit Nisse. « Je n’ai jamais su dire moi-même ce que c’est d’être acteur. C’est un besoin. J’ai l’impression que le plateau de cinéma est le seul endroit où je suis heureux. Il m’arrive aussi d’être heureux avec des amis après trois quarts d’heure d’apéro, ce moment où on ne rentre pas encore dans l’ivresse mais

qu’on est juste dans la chaleur. Mais en dehors de ça, tout le reste devient vite flippant ».

Dans le train qui nous ramène à Bruxelles, l’acteur se propose généreusement de trouver un titre à notre article : « Rencontre avec Pierre Nisse. Un homme abîmé et mystérieux », « Pierre Nisse, un cœur tendre derrière un punk au cœur abîmé ». Mieux encore : « Pierre Nisse, un homme abîmé mais qui sait encore dire ‘Je t’aime’ ». Jusqu’au dérapage : « P. Nisse, un acteur exhibitionniste mais qui sait se tenir de temps en temps. »

The perfect start to the artistic season, the Brussels Gallery Weekend is a great chance to visit more than fifty galleries and centres of art spread all around the city. We have looked through the whole extensive programme and made some choices to suit three kinds of art-lovers – interchangeable and not mutually exclusive, of course. — GILLES BECHET

he holidays are over. That’s good news for art-lovers, at least, who have been champing at the bit in front of the locked doors of their favourite galleries. The new season opens, as has become tradition, with a big weekend in which forty galleries are participating, presenting their wellknown, lesser-known, and emerging artists. And that’s not including the OFF programme, which features a further fifteen venues, like for example the Vanderborght building, where the group show “Fried Patterns” is giving young artists who don’t yet have gallery representation a chance to show their work. To help you choose from the extensive programme, we have mapped out a route for three kinds of art lovers.

STAR-STRUCK There are those of us who like to start with the big names, whom they find reassuring and sometimes enlightening. For them, the group show PAINTING IN BELGIUM at La Patinoire Royale offers a great starting point. More than 200 paintings and more than 30

artists retrace the prolific adventures of abstract painters in Belgium during the post-war period. Many big names and some others who have been forgotten make up this portrait of a generation in search of innovation.

Invited by the Antwerp gallerist Emmy Tob and the Knokke-based collector Roger Nellens, KEITH HARING spent a lot of time in Belgium, far from the chaos of New York. The exhibition “Keith Haring and His Belgian Entourage” at Galerie de la Béraudière revisits his creations and those of the Belgian pop artists who went before him.

In his new series of works Delocazione, CLAUDIO PARMIGGIANI is interested in the traces that objects leave in ash and dust.

Playing with shadows, light, and different materials, the artist explores loss and death in unsettling vanitases at Meessen De Clercq.

Known for his paintings, sculptures, and installations, such as his “meat pieces”, the US artist PAUL THEK has also done a lot of drawing. His first in Belgium, the exhibition “I Am, Am I?” at Jan Mot focuses on his prints and

drawings on newspaper, in which he revisits his recurring themes, such as horns and the tower of Babel.

A gifted and compulsive draughtsman, PABLO PICASSO was also an artist who was perpetually in search of new forms and new ways of looking at things. “Unbounded Virtuoso” at Vedovi Gallery, which presents ten drawings completed between 1909 and 1972, illustrates that perfectly.

A BREATH OF AIR Other art-lovers hope to find, in the starkness and visual tranquillity of some artists, a moment’s pause, but always with a connection to reality. The Guinean artist NÙ BARRETO’s work, exhibited by Galerie Nathalie Obadia, might be just their cup of tea. Barreto has

been drawing since he was a child.

His drawings, which have been enriched by his painting, photography, and videos, are the mirror that he holds up to the reality of contemporary Africa. In it, he sees red and black silhouettes, suspended within reality.

Alter egos which are bound to be imperfect because they are human.

ATARU SATO, for his part, draws to express his inner self, something forbidden, a poison that eats away at him, and his sexual anxieties.

His imaginary world, on display at Office Baroque, overflows with obsessive and bizarre images drawn in minute detail with a ballpoint pen. In his drawings and paintings alike, he searches tirelessly for what he knows about the world and about himself.

BRUSSELS GALLERY WEEKEND

Summer’s gone, here’s the Brussels Gallery Weekend! Every year, the reopening of the galleries and art centres draws a varied crowd into the city’s streets

MATTHEW LUTZ-KINOY’s drawings and paintings appear to be caught in a fluid and organic movement, always seeming to relate back to the body, the measure of all things. The US artist is nomadic and refuses to stick to a single medium or technique, equally at home with painting, ceramics, and performance in a spirit of collaboration, as you are able to witness at Mendes Wood DM. Painter, sculptor, and ceramicist MIQUEL BARCELÓ, whose work is on show at Almine Rech, was deeply affected by a journey to West Africa and fascinated by the ceramics made by the Dogon women. Since then, he has not stopped exploring and experimenting with the transformation of elements, clay, water, pigments, and sediments, combining

tradition and modernity.

For her Materials series, the Brussels-based artist HANA MILETIC drew her inspiration from photographs she took in the street, transposing them onto hand-woven tapestries. What interests her are the places where materials are repaired and transformed by people. In turn, with her threads of wool, she transforms the reality and rendering of photographs. The new gallery space La Maison de

Rendez-Vous is showing her “Retour au travail”.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED A third category of art-lovers is drawn to the unexpected, the point at which styles and materials merge together and overlap. The US artist OSCAR TUAZON’s work inhabits such a space between land art, architecture, and minimalism. In his sculptural installations, on show at

Dépendance, he transforms mass-produced and natural materials to explore the metamorphoses of the public sphere and of our environment.

Winner of the 2013 Marcel Duchamp Prize, the Franco-Moroccan conceptual romantic artist LATIFA ECHAKHCH is very sensitive to the political vibrations and challenges of today’s world. A multifaceted artist, her work includes photography, video, sculpture, and installations with found objects, as you can see at Dvir Gallery.

THAN HUSSEIN CLARK, an actor and visual artist from the US, likes to peel back the veneer of society.

His exhibition at Damien & the Love Guru presents nine previously unseen paintings of the British actor Selma Vaz Dias. It is followed by a performance of the play that he wrote based on the unpublished autobiography of the actor, who played Genet and brought the writer Jean Rhys back into the light.

The Swiss artist CLAUDIA COMTE’s “The Cavern of Lost Dreams (Nine Characters)” transforms Gladstone Gallery into an imaginary domain that combines manufactured and natural objects, biomorphic sculptures, and murals to question the world that we have made for ourselves and the one that we have destroyed.

And “All the Things I’ve Lost” at B.R.C., nomadic gallery Ballon Rouge Collective’s Brussels hub, is showing work by LINDSEY MENDICK AND PALOMA PROUDFOOT. Two artists merge into one, presenting their own mischievous form of feminism, liberated from inhibitions. At the heart of their work are ceramic pieces which tread the line between minimalism and ornamentation, the baroque and the banal, exploring the tensions between competition and solidarity.

“Ik heb niets tegen de hippe nieuwe adressen die er ook in Schaarbeek bij komen, maar ik vind het belangrijk om de bestaande plekken met charme en couleur locale te leren kennen. Ik ben sowieso iemand die nieuwsgierig is en ik snap het niet goed wanneer mensen de buurt waar ze wonen niet goed kennen of zich niet afvragen wat er zich achter bepaalde gevels afspeelt. Al is WHITE CINEMA in die zin natuurlijk wel een verrassende eerste tip. Het heeft een tijd geduurd voor ik doorhad dat de grote kranen die ik van op ons dakterras zag shoppingcenter Docks aan het bouwen waren. En het heeft daarna ook weer een tijd geduurd voor ik daar voor het eerst kwam, want ik haat shoppingcenters. Alleen vind ik Docks nog wel ruim en aangenaam, waardoor het bijna jammer wordt dat er nu zoveel leegstand is. En zo’n cinema vlakbij is ook handig. Het programma is redelijk goed, je hebt de zaal bijna voor jou alleen, ze hebben de beste zetels van België, en ze zijn sympathiek want ze hebben de tombola van ons straatfeest gesponsord met cinematickets.” (Lacht) “Vlakbij, onder de Van Praetbrug, zit de BRUXELLES ROYAL YACHT CLUB verstopt. Een supermooi art-decogebouw dat exclusief en ontoegankelijk lijkt, terwijl de bar en het restaurant gewoon open zijn voor het publiek. Ik heb er nog niet gegeten, maar ze hebben alvast goede chocomelk. En het decor en het uitzicht zijn gewoon fantastisch. Ik zou het niet erg vinden dat mijn trouwfeest hier zou plaatsvinden, mocht ik ooit trouwen.”

Vlees, vis en vegetarisch “Meer in de richting van waar ik

woon, op de as tussen station en gemeentehuis, heb je midden in het kosmopolitische Schaarbeek een slagerij die je eerder in de jaren 1960 of ’70 in de Kempen zou situeren. In SLAGERIJ VERTONGEN word je door een koppel Vlamingen met liefde, passie en een glimlach bediend.

Als ik daar binnenkom, heb ik een beetje spijt dat ik vegetariër ben geworden. Ze zijn alleen ’s middags in de week een paar uur open en dan zondig ik wel eens met een broodje met verse bouletten.”

helemaal ongeloofwaardig te maken voor een vegetariër noem ik ook PALASI LATINO. Een vleeszaak waar ze ook een lekkere vegetarische burrito serveren. De kitsch druipt ervan af – op het plafond zijn papegaaien in een oerwoud geschilderd – maar je kan er geweldig eten en in de kelder onder het restaurant zit ook nog een wat louche latindiscotheek waar ik zeker nog eens wil gaan boîten.”

Krokant graag

“Ik heb ook andere dan eetadresjes hoor, maar eerst moet ik het nog even over brood en frieten hebben. Achter de VRT is er bakker LE BON PAIN, waar ze het beste brood van de wereld bakken.

Hun boekweitzuurdesembrood is zo krokant aan de buitenkant en zo mals aan de binnenkant dat ik het meteen kan opeten als het juist uit de oven komt. Ik heb de bakker leren kennen door hun samosa’s waar ik maar moeilijk van afgekickt raak, en net als bij

bakker Banette in Evere staat men er vaak in lange rijen aan te schuiven.”

“Ook wat frieten betreft ben ik kieskeurig, want zelfs in de hoofdstad van ons frietland is het niet altijd evident om echt krokante frieten te vinden. Fritland en Tabora heb je na een tijd ook wel gezien, dus ik kan iedereen MASTER FRITES op de Leuvensesteenweg aanraden. De uitbaters zijn heel sympa, je kan er binnen en buiten zitten, en de frieten komen nog in puntzakken.”

“Oké, wat natuur dan. De eerste keer dat ik een voet zette in ’T MOERASKE vond ik het vreselijk dat ik dat al niet veel eerder had gedaan. Normaal ga ik elke dag een toer van acht kilometer lopen, en in de fractie van een seconde dat je van de luidruchtige straat in het natuurgebied komt, wordt het opeens muisstil. Je komt er alleen mensen tegen die hun hond uitlaten en de begroeiing ziet er elke keer weer anders uit. Van boven op de trapjes lijkt het alsof

je in de jungle kijkt, met op de achtergrond het Atomium en de Basiliek.”

“Met mijn nieuwsgierigheid en de tips van de mensen die ik hier heb leren kennen, zou ik nog een tijdje kunnen doorgaan. Dynamo is de nieuwe creatieve publieke ruimte in De Kriekelaar, Train World is echt een aanrader voor jong en oud, en toen ik vorig jaar voor het ongelofelijk gezellige festival Alles es just voor het eerst in NOVANOIS kwam met zijn oude cinemazaal, was dat echt een openbaring. GRAFIK is een al wat bekender, klein, geëngageerd galerietje waar je vooral Belgische stripauteurs kan kopen en waar ook scènes ouvertes worden georganiseerd, en zodra zwembad Neptunium gerenoveerd is, ga ik er meteen weer zwemmen. En als ik na het zwemmen weer een hongertje heb, passeer ik bij de Turkse supermarkt CANDAN vlakbij, met al die standjes die samen een heuse food market vormen.”

he numbers obviously don’t tell the whole story of her uncontested talent, but they are impressive nonetheless.

Isabelle Huppert has been nominated for an award at Cannes 22 times. In 1978 (Violette) and 2001 (La pianiste), she won the award for best actress. She has worked with some of the best: Claude Chabrol (seven times),

but there is a general consensus about the brilliant performance from the leading lady of French cinema. Huppert plays a terminally ill actress who invites her adult children, husband, exes, and friends to an enchantingly beautiful spot in Portugal and is determined to enjoy the sun and not to cry.

Frankie seems to have reconciled herself with her impending death and surrounds herself with people that she cares about. What would you do if you were in her shoes?

ISABELLE HUPPERT: I don’t know. I never imagine

I do understand that many people ask me this question now, though. Even though the film is about a person who is dying, it is also about

In Frankie, you speak English, just like you did earlier this year in Greta, the horror fairy-tale by Neil Jordan. Is there a particular reason for that?

HUPPERT: No, it is purely coincidental. I enjoy acting in English but I readily admit that it is very different. I do not feel as though I am the same when I act in French and in English. For Greta, I dubbed my own voice into French.

Who would have done it better? (Laughs) But I realized that I couldn’t deliver quite the same performance. Speaking English makes you act slightly differently. Both your voice and your face are different. I am very sensitive to that.

This summer, the Dutch Eye Film Museum organized a retrospective of your films. Do you sometimes look back?

something vital. Moreover, you simply can’t avoid the fact that I play an actress and that I am myself an actress. That creates great intimacy between me and the character and of course it is no coincidence. Ira Sachs knows what he’s doing. He has made his film real and self-evident. But as far as I am concerned personally, I never worry about the things that my characters are struggling with.

HUPPERT: I rarely look back, but retrospectives are simply a fact of life if you are an actress, and then you have to think about the past. I am proud and happy that film museums organize such events. It is always reassuring when your work pops up somewhere. But don’t ask me to name a favourite film because I love them all equally. I sometimes coincidentally see an old film of mine and it might make me feel amused, bored, or indifferent. They don’t really affect me. It is not some major event. And as far as I am concerned, there has been no great evolution. My style has not changed drastically.

The roles have changed, of course, and each role demands something different. Most of it was already there at the beginning, though.

As a living and working actress, I don’t want to invest too much time in looking back. I don’t believe in my own mythology enough to spend too much time digging in the past. My present and my future interest me far more. (Little laugh) Incidentally, at the moment my present is not so much about film but about theatre. I am performing in Mary Said What She Said by the American director Robert Wilson. It’s a monologue by the Scottish queen Mary Stuart on the eve of her execution.

Are there any films that you are not proud of?

HUPPERT: No. I have been very lucky.

Is Frankie prouder of her work than her family?

And is that confronting?

HUPPERT: That is a subtle suggestion in the

film. Acting was clearly an extremely important part of her life. She wants to donate her money to a foundation for actors, for example. That is very generous, but also a little heartless towards her family who will inherit almost nothing. There is something selfish and selfless about it. Ira Sachs is brilliant at evoking contradictory feelings. I admire that about his work. The film is tragic but also very lively, sunny but also dark. Ira is a master of contrast

In addition to film, you have developed an impressive theatre career, but you seem to be

much less interested in television roles. Why is that?

HUPPERT: It is not that I avoid television completely; I play a very exaggerated version of myself in Dix pour cent, for example. But I accepted the role because director Marc Fitoussi is a friend of mine. I also acted in two of his films. In Copacabana, which was filmed in Ostend, I performed opposite my daughter Lolita Chammah. I’ll never forget it.

I was also in one episode of The Romanoffs by Matthew Weiner, the man who made the popular AMC show Mad Men. I don’t refuse to do TV shows, and I have certain ideas about characters that you watch over a longer period of time. To me, the major power of television is the possibility of developing something over a long time. But you will never get me to say that the aesthetics of a TV show can be equated to those of films. Films are films, TV shows are TV shows.

It would not be in your own interests to do so.

Don’t you own a cinema in Paris?

HUPPERT: We own two cinemas, but I am not very involved. My son runs them. Business is good and I am quite proud of that in this era of Netflix.

At your current rate, you will soon have clocked up one hundred and fifty films. Why do you keep working so hard?

HUPPERT: It might seem as though I work continuously, but it’s not really true. I work a lot, but not all the time. Not every day. I certainly don’t accept every role that is offered to me. In fact, I have noticed that I am getting pickier than I used to be.

Dat de personages in hun blootje rondlopen, is het minst vreemde aan De Patrick.

Met zijn geslaagde debuutfilm over de eigenaardigheid van de mens vindt Tim Mielants aansluiting bij de Belgische cinema met een surreële inslag. — NIELS RUËLL Een even originele besparing als huilen in bad is je tragikomedie situeren in een naturistencamping in de Ardennen. De eerste minuten is het wennen om gevierde acteurs als Pierre Bokma, Josse De Pauw, Frank Vercruyssen en Ariane van Vliet in hun niet perfect afgetrainde, niet meer jonge blootje te zien rondlopen en ruziemaken. Daarna zie je het bloot niet meer omdat er niets aan is, omdat het aseksueel naakt is en omdat het door de wol geverfde acteurs zijn, maar ook omdat de film continu intrigeert en voor geen gat te vangen is.

De Patrick is een debuutfilm maar voelt zo niet aan.

Wellicht omdat Tim Mielants al een pak ervaring heeft als regisseur van tv-series zoals Cordon, Peaky Blinders en Legion. Hij durft tegen de haren in te strijken en een sfeer te installeren waarin alles je nét ontsnapt. Zoals in een droom. Met Frank van den Eeden verzekerde hij zich van een director of photography die er mee voor zorgt dat de beelden uitdrukken wat er moet worden uitgedrukt.

Door penibele omstandigheden draait alles op een naturistencamping in de Ardennen rond de Patrick, een klusjesman die het net waardeert dat er niets om hem draait. De zwaar verdikte en verlelijkte Kevin Janssens (D’Ardennen) heeft amper dialoog en mag nauwelijks emoties tonen, maar kan de zware rol aan. Patricks gebrek aan ambitie werkt op de zenuwen van de kampeerders die wel veroordeeld zijn tot machtsspelletjes. “We worden ambetant door naar u te kijken. Doe iets met uw leven. De wereld gaat naar de kloten door mensen zoals gij.” In

plaats van ostentatief te rouwen na de plotse dood van zijn vader en het beheer van de camping in handen te nemen, zoekt Patrick obsessief naar zijn vermiste hamer. Het is grappig én tragisch. Uiteindelijk aanvaard je de sloef als held van het verhaal en dat is mooi. Het scenario houdt een hoge vlucht tegen, maar de bijblijvende eigenaardigheid verraadt dat Mielants gerust wel ambitie mag hebben.

Kevin Janssens (D’Ardennen) est Patrick, le fils sans ambition des propriétaires d’un camping naturiste. Au lieu de pleurer de façon ostentatoire la mort subite de son père et de prendre en charge la gestion du camping, il se met de façon obsessionnelle à chercher son marteau disparu. Le fait que les personnages se promènent tout nus est la chose la moins étrange dans ce premier long métrage de Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders). Le réalisateur ose aller à contre-courant et installe une atmosphère où tout vous échappe.

Un film à la fois drôle et tragique. Le scénario n’est pas de grande ampleur, mais sa singularité mémorable prouve que Mielants a de l’ambition.

Kevin Janssens (D’Ardennen) is “our” Patrick, the ambitionless son of the managers of a naturist camp. Instead of mourning ostentatiously when his father suddenly dies and taking over the reins at the campsite, he obsessively looks for his lost hammer. The fact that all the characters are naked is the least strange thing about the first feature-length film by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders). The director dares to rub you the wrong way and creates an atmosphere in which everything seems just beyond grasp. His film is both funny and tragic. The script prevents it from being truly great, but its peculiarity stays with you and that bodes well for Mielants’s future.

Des amis à vous auraient bien besoin d’être guéris de projets matrimoniaux voués à l’échec ? Emmenez-les voir Ready or Not, et leur envie de mariage en prendra un coup. Grace, qui a grandi dans la pauvreté, découvre au cours de sa nuit de noces que sa belle-famille richissime a un rituel très étrange. Cette sinistre famille doit sa fortune aux jeux de société et la mariée est obligée de jouer une partie avec eux. Grace a la malchance de tomber sur une version de cache-cache plutôt sanglante. La belle-famille a jusqu’à l’aube pour faire sortir la mariée de sa cachette à l’aide d’une arbalète, d’une hache ou d’autres armes de torture afin de l’offrir en sacrifice à Satan. C’est un petit peu moins intelligent que ne l’imaginent les créateurs, mais l’ambiance, l’équilibre entre horreur et humour, est bonne et malsaine. L’actrice principale Samara Weaving mérite une chance. Les réalisateurs ne sont pas très doués pour les effets de surprise, mais maintiennent un rythme soutenu et se soucient du visuel. Ils ne se formalisent pas du respect pour les riches, ni pour l’institution du mariage et c’est parfait pour s’amuser. Rien ne sert de courir… (NR)

That, at least, is what Morpheus claims in The Matrix. Twenty years ago, the directors and scriptwriters Lilly and Lana Wachowski cleverly capitalized on the fears around the millennium with this philosophical cyber thriller. Despite spectacular special effects like the famous and much copied bullet time, The Matrix feels like an old myth now. Step by step, hacker Neo – Keanu Reeves in the role of his life – discovers that his world is only a virtual creation made by all-powerful machines (the Matrix) that abuse people as batteries.

Kinepolis is screening the remastered 4DX version of the classic. 4DX involves moving cinema seats, wind, mist, rain, lightning, vibrations, and smells that are all supposed to immerse you more deeply into this film that warns against total immersion. (NR)

De in armoede opgegroeide Grace ontdekt tijdens haar huwelijksnacht dat haar steenrijke schoonfamilie er een wel heel erg vreemd ritueel op na houdt: ze dankt haar fortuin aan gezelschapsspelletjes waar de bruid in mag meespelen. Alleen heeft Grace de pech dat het een nogal bloederige versie van verstoppertje is. De schrikeffecten zijn niet altijd even geweldig, maar de sfeer en het evenwicht tussen horror en humor zitten goed.

Grace, who grew up in poverty, discovers during her wedding night that her immensely rich family-in-law practices a very strange ritual: they thank their fortune to party games in which the bride is invited to take part. The problem for Grace is that this is a particularly bloody version of hide and seek. The jump scares don’t all hit the spot, but the atmosphere and the balance between horror and comedy is very good. Neither the rich nor the institution of marriage are spared, and that serves the entertainment value very well.

After several popular terrasses, we thought it would be fun to try out one last summer lunch of the chic and extravagant variety. Sadly, La Jardinière du Wiltcher’s was a let-down.

Located at the bottom of Louizalaan/avenue Louise, the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s Hotel is an impressive fortress-like building. Since the start of May, the place has been creating quite a buzz with its pop-up project (which ends on 29 September), La Jardinière du Wiltcher’s.

The idea is to offer a fresh, vegetable-based lunch in the form of a large buffet. When we went there one Monday in mid-August, it was our first time making the pilgrimage to this citadel. Facing away from the city and perfectly protected from the sun, the terrasse is pleasant, the seats lined with thick cushions. Another thing the place has going for it, and certainly the most remarkable, is how thoughtful the staff are. They do everything they can to ensure you have the best time possible.

The formula is an all-you-can-eat buffet for €24 per person. If you want a dessert, you’ll have to spend €35 to choose from three sweet dishes. While we applaud the decision to provide a 100% plant-based selection, we have to admit we were disappointed by the dishes laid out on the counter. They had clearly hedged their bets by providing a wide variety…but

there was nothing that really blew us away. The green and white asparagus (which were not seasonal!), the cauliflower, the beans, the pretty mediocre olives, and the broccoli, they were all painfully uninspiring. It was a big disappointment for a foodie who had been dreaming of daring combinations and creations. The truth is that the buffet in question was everything we dislike about the format, in other words, one soulless dish after another, of the kind one might find in a holiday club.

It’s not that they were bad, exactly. Some were even delicious, such as the vine leaves, which were beautifully stuffed, or the grilled aubergines with plenty of flavour. That said, they were nothing to get excited about…or make you want to go back, knowing that it will cost you €24.

Fortunately, having opted for the €35 deal, we were able to try the desserts. The tart combining shortbread biscuit, a layer of caramel, and little milk chocolate dômes provided some consolation. It was a genuine, properly executed culinary delight but, sadly, it wasn’t enough to make up for an underwhelming experience.

Een lovenswaardig initiatief, waarvan helaas het terras en de bediening de belangrijkste troeven bleken. Het buffet zelf (€24/€35 met dessert) stelde teleur. Of het nu gaat om de asperges, de bloemkool, de boontjes, de armetierige olijven of de broccoli, de foodie die hoopte op gedurfde combinaties ziet enkel de gemiste kansen. Het is niet allemaal slecht, en bepaalde bereidingen smaken zelfs, maar het is niet genoeg om een terugkeer af te dwingen. Het dessert, een zanddeegtaartje met karamel en chocolade, bood troost, maar kon de vlakke ervaring niet uitwissen.

Jusqu’au 29 septembre, La Jardinière du Wiltcher’s propose un lunch frais et végétal, une terrasse agréable et un service prévenant. La formule ? Un buffet à volonté (€24/€35 avec dessert). Qu’il s’agisse du chou-fleur, des haricots, des olives ou des brocolis, cela manque cruellement d’âme et de gourmandise, soit l’image négative que l’on a du genre. C’est décevant pour le foodie qui rêvait d’associations audacieuses et de créations. Mauvais ? Non, certaines propositions sont mêmes savoureuses. Mais pas suffisant pour donner envie de revenir.

Heureusement, le dessert – une tarte associant biscuit sablé, caramel et dômes de chocolat – a fait office de consolation.
