La ville dans l’œil d’un photographe bruxellois

« Pour moi, la ville n’est pas uniquement cet espace que l’on traverse pour aller d’un point à un autre ; elle est un magnifique et inépuisable terrain de jeu. J’aime, par exemple, y déambuler au hasard des dés ou d’une fléchette jetée sur un plan. Mon projet Palm Club évoquait la profusion de déchets clandestins dans mon quartier, mais surtout la possibilité de se reconnaître acteur dans la construction d’un espace public tel que nous le rêvons. Cette série donne à voir quatre lieux emblématiques de la capitale. Certaines images ont été réalisées en complicité avec (le chanteur-compositeur) Renato Baccarat. » FR

Church of Sound JAZZ IN THE HOUSE OF GOD

Hallelujah! Inspired by Kanye West’s Sunday Service, the Ancienne Belgique is going to church to celebrate its 40th birthday. The Brussels concert venue is no stranger to the Beguinage Church, but it is now also coming to the Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula and the Chapel of the Brigittines. At the latter, Church of Sound, the London-based organization that regularly fills the Church of St James the Great in East London with jazz music, will celebrate next week’s Mass. Jazz in the house of the Lord? It’s not new. In the early twentieth century, black musicians in the United States were forbidden from playing in the clubs and concert halls of white people. So they would go to church to play gospel, spirituals, but also jazz. Duke Ellington composed three Sacred Concerts especially to be played in church, even John Coltrane would regularly perform at churches. “There’s something special about these places,” says Lexus Blondin, who founded Church of Sound with musician Spencer Martin three years ago. Blondin is a French DJ who has been living in London for a while and is also the driving force behind Total Refreshment Centre, a London platform and label for EN

young musicians based in an old warehouse. Martin is a musician who used to play the organ in churches in exchange for a corner where he could set up his recording equipment. “These are tough times for grassroots venues in London, due to licensing laws and high rents. And then there are all these churches that are actually perfect for concerts, with their thick walls and no immediate neighbours. And of course,

their core business is bringing people together.” Community building is a key ingredient of the Church of Sound evenings. “We serve drinks and food beforehand, we play records, and at the end there are no bouncers kicking everyone out.” Church of Sound is deeply indebted to the people of the parish, Blondin says. “Every time, we move all the benches, and we’re even allowed to install a bar. That gives us the freedom to pro-

gramme widely and to pay our artists. With the rent we pay the church, they can afford to repair their organ, for example. It works for everyone, really.” During the concerts, the musicians play in the centre of the space, surrounded by the audience. “It brings an intimacy to the show that is quite rare to see. The musicians also love that energy, they start playing in a different way.” The live music project has already brought some of the innovators of the flourishing London jazz scene to church, like Yussef Kamaal and Maisha. Normally they play a songbook by jazz greats like Alice Coltrane or Idris Muhammad and then showcase some of their own stuff. In Brussels, the American multi-instrumentalist Kahil El’Zabar and his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble will perform their interpretation of the work of the spiritual jazz giants John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders before they offer a taste of their own work. “Kahil plays drums, cajón, thumb piano, he chants and shouts. 113. C’est le nombre de documentaires belges (dont quelques inédits) qui seront présentés sur tout le territoire à l’occasion de la seconde édition du Mois du Doc. Les festivités prendront place dans des espaces convenus, comme les salles de cinéma, mais aussi dans des lieux insolites, comme des bibliothèques et des prisons. Le tout assorti de rencontres avec les réalisateurs et de débats. À Bruxelles, on notera, entre autres, l’avant-première de L’École du Changement. What started in the Lower East Side in New York in 2000 has now grown into a yearly global competition in which MCs battle it out to see who is really the very best. Announced as the biggest rap challenge in the world, eight countries are competing for the title in the End of the Weak final. The best word-spitter will be selected by a professional jury who will judge all the contestants based on five specific tests that meticulously measure the MCs’ technical skills. Belgium has been in the flow since 2014, is organizing the final this year, and is sending the Brussels-based rapper Crapulax to compete on its behalf. (TP)

Onbekende bands scouten is in de informatiesamenleving vaak een karwei. “Maar als we à la Spotify en Netflix onze affiche nu eens laten samenstellen door curatoren van festivals, die wel al tot de verbeelding spreken,” dachten ze bij een Brussels artiestenbureau, en het eerste hoofdstedelijke showcasefestival was een feit. — TOM PEETERS

urosonic in Groningen, Reeperbahn in Hamburg en South by Southwest in Austin, Texas zijn de bekendste, maar intussen heeft zowat elk land zijn showcasefestival dat muzikale speurneuzen de next big thing wil doen ontdekken uit een brede waaier aan genres. Maar nadat Glimps in Gent drie jaar geleden de handdoek in de ring moest gooien na het mislopen van Vlaamse

subsidies, was er in België al een tijdje geen vooraanstaand showcasefestival meer. Het Brusselse Fifty PR springt nu, samen met KuratedBy, dat onder meer de Dour-affiche samenstelt, in dat gat. “In vijf concertzalen – de Ancienne Belgique, L’Archiduc, Bonnefooi, La Madeleine en FFORMATT, de nieuwe venue in de ondergrondse parking van het vroegere Actiris-gebouw in de Anspachlaan – zullen we

twee avonden op rij dertig concerten programmeren, die twintig à veertig minuten duren,” zegt een enthousiaste Marianne Cattoir (aka dj Catwar), pr- en eventmanager bij Fifty PR. “Op de afterparty in C12 komen daar nog eens vier extra acts bij.” Fifty PR verzorgt de promotie en marketing van Angèle, BRNS en nog een heleboel andere artiesten, maar is bij de Brusselse concertganger

Net als Rosalía pendelt deze Andalusische tussen traditie en moderniteit. vooral bekend van zijn FiftyFifty Sessions. “Met dat maandelijkse schowcase-event, meestal in C12, zijn we nu aan ons vierde jaar begonnen. We koppelen telkens één Belgische aan één internationale artiest. Dat opkomende talent afficheren we op basis van onze eigen coup de cœurs.” Onder anderen Angèle, Coely en Témé Tan, maar ook Loyle Carner, Eddy de Pretto en Mahalia kon je er aan het werk zien nog voor ze doorbraken. “Zeker in de Belgische scene is de zone tussen beginnende artiest en gevestigde naam erg grijs. Middelen en podia om de volgende stap te zetten, ontbreken vaak. Bekijk onze FiftyFifty Session, en nu dus ook FiftyFifty Lab, als een trampoline die daarbij kan helpen.”

PRIMAVERA SOUND Het festival komt volgens Cattoir op het juiste moment, omdat Brussel en zijn exploderende urban scene de voorbije jaren ook internationaal meer in het vizier kwamen. “We willen muziekliefhebbers in deze tijden van informatiestress bovendien helpen om keuzes te maken. Tijdens een brainstorm bedachten

we dat het handig zou zijn om artiesten te suggereren die op een of andere manier al in het verlengde liggen van je smaak, zoals bij Spotify of Netflix. Dat hebben we naar een festivalline-up vertaald door in totaal negentien binnen- en vooral buitenlandse festivals uit te nodigen die sowieso constant op zoek zijn naar de next big thing.” Fifty PR is zelf de twintigste curator. “Die curatoren zijn in feite onze headliners. Ben je fan van het Spaanse Primavera Sound? Of van de innovatieve elektronica op het Amsterdamse Dekmantel Festival? Of misschien trek je elk jaar naar BRDCST? Dan ga je naar de artiest die zij programmeren.” Elke curator mocht twee artiesten voorstellen, waarvan er uiteindelijk één behouden bleef om de line-up divers genoeg te houden qua genre,

nationaliteit, gender… “Het was een hele puzzel, want het is niet de bedoeling dat bezoekers de hele avond op dezelfde plek blijven hangen om drie hiphopacts na elkaar te zien. We willen het publiek in beweging krijgen. Een app met naast de line-up ook uittips, van toffe restaurants tot vinylshops, moet de festivalgangers goesting geven om de stad te ontdekken. Voor de professionals zijn er overdag conferenties en netwerkmomenten.” Het is niet de bedoeling dat het bij één editie blijft. “Misschien kunnen we binnen x-aantal jaar wel veertig curatoren uitnodigen op tien plekken. Groeien is niet ons eerste doel, wel toegankelijk en kwalitatief blijven, maar grenzen zijn er niet. Curatoren, locaties en het concept kunnen mee verschuiven.”

Al sinds Ricky Cherim over een MacBook met GarageBand beschikt, produceert hij muziek. Eerst tech house en rapbeats, maar als Meetsysteem zwengelt hij zijn wiegende, naar Roosbeef en Doe Maar neigende nederpop voorzichtig én gedurfd aan met synth hooks en eightiesbassen.

Geïnspireerd door Stromae, stak debuut Parfum vol knappe metaforen, gepuurd uit zijn onafscheidelijke blocnote. 8/11, 20.00, FFORMATT PONGO Curator: Paléo (Nyon, Zwitserland) Vroeger liet de Angolese zangeres, die meezong met Buraka Som Sistema op ‘Kalemba’, zich Pongo Love noemen. Maar ook zonder de “Love” is de liefde er niet op verminderd, getuige haar erg fysieke neokuduro volgestouwd met frenetieke ritmes, passionele vocalen en dubby afrobeats. 8/11, 22.20, La Madeleine

Le festival Pink Screens est de retour dans la capitale avec ses films coups de poing et novateurs qui abordent les questions de genre et de sexualité sans chichis et sans tabous, pour notre plus grand bien. Comme dans Mon Nom est Clitoris, le documentaire bruxellois de Daphné Leblond et Lisa Billuart Monet où le clitoris parle enfin pour lui-même. — SOPHIE SOUKIAS • PHOTOS: IVAN PUT

ongtemps invisibilisé, sujet à des interprétations psychanalytiques douteuses et objet de fantasmes et de haine pour sa fonction unique de plaisir, le clitoris s’en est pris plein le gland à travers les âges. Porté par la vague #metoo et acteur de poids dans ce phénomène historique de libération de la parole, le clitoris réclame aujourd’hui sa place dans la sexualité féminine et dans l’espace public, plus largement. Aux côtés du clitoris: les réalisatrices Daphné Leblond et Lisa Billuart Monet. Dans leur premier long-métrage Mon Nom est Clitoris, les deux diplômées de l’INSAS signent un documentaire libérateur et générationnel où des filles de leur tranche d’âge (la vingtaine entamée) s’expriment face caméra sur leur sexualité, sur le plaisir et sur leur corps. Mais aussi sur leurs questionnements, sur l’absence de connaissances et les tabous paralysants qui entourent l’anatomie et la sexualité féminines au point de nuire gravement au plaisir et à l’épanouissement. « On voulait réaliser un documentaire qui fait du bien », expliquent

Leblond et Billuart Monet, assises sur le lit de cette dernière. Une brève plongée dans les conditions de tournage intimistes de leur film, où chaque fille (douze au total) est interviewée entre les murs de sa chambre à coucher.

Parlez-nous un peu du choix du décor dans Mon Nom est Clitoris. LISA BILLUART MONET: On voulait un environne-

ment où les filles puissent se sentir bien et libres de parler. Parce que c’est un exercice qui nous paraissait très difficile. On leur demandait non pas de parler de sexualité de manière globale mais de leurs expériences personnelles. Comme nous n’étions que deux – Daphné au son et moi à l’image – l’ambiance était très intime, en mode soirée pyjama. On filmait en lumière naturelle et on ne changeait pas la disposition de leur chambre. Je pense que tout ça a favorisé une parole libre. DAPHNÉ LEBLOND: Notre cinéma documentaire pose pas mal de questions éthiques et nous ne voulions en rien manipuler nos sujets pour obtenir quelque chose d’elles. On a choisi des

filles qui avaient le même âge que nous, on voulait être au même niveau. On partageait avec elles les mêmes soucis et les mêmes questionnements. Ça ne se voit pas au montage, mais on s’est confiées autant qu’elles se sont confiées. BILLUART MONET: Ce qui a aidé, c’est qu’avec notre film, on répondait à un besoin. Les filles qui ont accepté de répondre à nos questions, ne l’ont pas fait pour nous faire plaisir. Elles l’ont fait parce qu’il y avait un besoin de le faire, parce que c’était important pour elles. En partageant leurs expériences, elles espèrent faire changer les mentalités, pour que des jeunes femmes et hommes ne se retrouvent pas face aux mêmes problèmes qu’elles.

Comment passe-t-on de la prise de conscience du manque de connaissances sur le clitoris et le plaisir féminin à la réalisation d’un long-métrage documentaire ? LEBLOND: Pour moi, c’est parti de questions que

je me posais notamment autour de la masturbation et dans mes rapports amoureux.

Lorsqu’on était étudiantes à l’INSAS avec Lisa, on a eu une longue discussion sur ces questions et la décision de faire un film a été quelque chose de l’ordre de l’impulsion, une sorte d’élan spontané qui nous a portées. BILLUART MONET: Daphné avait 24 ans et moi 21, c’était il y a quatre ans. On a parlé de masturbation et de pénétration obligatoire dans les rapports hétérosexuels et je me suis sentie beaucoup moins seule. C’était une des premières fois que j’abordais concrètement le sujet. On s’est dit que se mettre à en parler avec d’autres jeunes femmes de notre âge, allait nous faire du bien à nous et à elles aussi. On était dans des sections techniques à l’INSAS et c’est le sujet qui nous a donné envie de passer du côté de la réalisation.

Comme le montre votre documentaire, ce sont des sujets qui sont finalement peu traités entre filles. LEBLOND: On n’en parle pas trop mais je pense

qu’il y a tout de même un espace de parole chez les filles lors de ces fameuses soirées pyjama et

tout ce qui est lié à ce qu’on dévalorise comme étant du gossip et du commérage. Alors qu’il s’agit en fait d’un espace où les filles s’expriment sur l’amour et sur leurs émotions. BILLUART MONET: Dans le film, une des filles dit qu’on parle souvent de sexe à deux et beaucoup

à travers les hommes, mais qu’on parle peu de son propre plaisir comme un sujet en soi. C’est ce qu’on essaie de faire dans le film.

Pour beaucoup de filles qui s’expriment devant la caméra, c’était la première fois qu’on leur posait ce genre de questions sur leur sexualité. Vous attendiez-vous à une parole aussi abondante et libérée ? BILLUART MONET: Je me mets à leur place et si

on me posait la question aussi frontalement de savoir si j’ai déjà simulé ou si je me suis déjà masturbée, je ne sais pas si j’aurais eu le courage de répondre. LEBLOND: On ne s’attendait pas à une telle liberté de parole et pas si rapidement. BILLUART MONET: Même si c’est vrai qu’elles ne sont pas si gênées que ça de parler, je trouve que c’est important que l’on sente la gêne pour avoir conscience du pas énorme qui est en train d’être franchi. Il ne faut pas qu’on s’imagine que c’est facile. LEBLOND: Aujourd’hui, il y a autre chose qui demande du courage. Ces filles ont évolué

depuis le tournage et doivent accepter que ce soit une image d’elles d’il y a trois ou quatre ans qui va exister dans le film. Certaines se trouvent naïves après coup, d’autres ont beaucoup changé. BILLUART MONET: On a en tête un deuxième projet « quatre ans plus tard », pour leur donner l’espace pour ajouter des choses.

En quatre ans, beaucoup d’eau a coulé sous les ponts. Le tsunami #metoo a fait son effet et les documentaires visant à libérer la parole sont de plus en plus nombreux à voir le jour (voir Sans Frapper de la Bruxelloise Alexe Poukine). LEBLOND: Ce qui me frappe dans cette explo-

sion, c’est que chacun travaille dans son coin, qu’on a le sentiment d’être un peu seul et puis, d’un coup, tout sort en même temps et on comprend qu’on fait partie d’un ensemble. À l’époque, on a décidé de se lancer dans ce documentaire précisément parce qu’il n’existait pas encore. Pour reprendre une citation de l’essayiste américaine Toni Morrison : « S’il y a un livre que vous souhaitez lire mais qu’il n’a pas encore été écrit, alors il faut l’écrire vous-même ».

détourner le matériel didactique existant parce que c’était aussi une manière de raconter le tabou. Quand on pense que l’émission de vulgarisation scientifique C’est Pas Sorcier n’a jamais parlé de plaisir féminin, c’est affolant. LEBLOND: Cette volonté pédagogique n’a pas toujours été facile à défendre auprès des productions parce qu’elles se positionnent du côté du cinéma. On a voulu démontrer que les deux n’étaient pas incompatibles.

le documentaire, on l’aurait fait. BILLUART MONET: Derrière chaque nana, il y a un

vécu différent. On a eu envie de faire un film qui fait du bien pour ne plus se sentir seules et ne plus se sentir bizarres. La norme est finalement très étroite et personne ne se sent vraiment correspondre à cet idéal féminin.

BILLUART MONET: On est en contact avec un

planning familial qui a écrit un dossier pédagogique qui pourra s’appuyer sur des extraits du film. On est également en train d’organiser des projections scolaires. LEBLOND: Pour nous, l’école reste le meilleur endroit pour essayer de donner la chance à toutes et à tous d’avoir une éducation correcte.

Dans Mon Nom est Clitoris, vous choisissez de « rester entre filles ». Les hommes ne sont pas sollicités pour parler du plaisir féminin. Un choix évident dès le départ ?

qui n’arrivent pas à ressentir de plaisir et c’est grave. Pas seulement dans leurs rapports amoureux mais dans leur vie tout court, dans leur rapport à leur corps et au bonheur. LEBLOND: Dans les manuels scolaires et les cours d’éducation sexuelle, on parle des risques de maladie et de grossesse mais il y a deux autres types de risques, qui sont celui du non-consentement et celui des discriminations (racisme, grossophobie, LGBT-phobies), dont on ne parle pas du tout et qui sont complètement minimisés. BILLUART MONET: Lorsqu’on demandait aux filles si elles voulaient ajouter quelque chose à la fin de l’interview, trois filles sur quatre désiraient parler du consentement.

Votre documentaire montre également à quel point il peut être douloureux voire dangereux de ne pas comprendre son propre corps et ne pas pouvoir identifier ses désirs.

They don’t have a single female member, they have banned pronouns from their lyrics, and they love Twin Peaks, Buddha, and Marvin Gaye: Girl Band are the most radical and most fun group in the latest cohort of rock bands from across the Channel. — TOM ZONDERMAN

n case you have spent the past few months living under a rock: there is a new wave of guitar bands from Dublin that has been washing over the music scene. Fontaines DC, The Murder Capital, Silverbacks, Pillow Queens, Just Mustard: the list just keeps getting longer. The earthquake that triggered the tsunami is a four-piece called Girl Band. They debuted in 2015 with the brazen, unsettling Holding Hands with Jamie, which combined the raw power of The Birthday Party after a bad trip with the crushing noise of early Liars. After singer Dara Kiely suffered from an overdose of white noise in the head – he suffered from psychoses after his relationship ended, started thinking he was God and that he could control the weather, and secluded himself in a tent in his garden – the clouds seem to have now cleared. Well, cleared…The Talkies, their new album, feels like being banished to a haunted house somewhere deep in the darkest forests of

Ireland. The opener alone, entitled “Prolix”, packs a powerful punch of disquieting gasps over an ominous drone. One minute and forty-nine seconds of discomfort on tape. “It seemed like a good idea to start the record,” Dara Kiely and guitarist Alan Duggan tell us as they sit in front of immense pints of beer at Café Le Coq. “I’m into mindfulness meditation, where you have to focus on your breath and stuff like that. But I was going through a bit of a rough patch that day, and the breathing ended in a panic attack. We decided to keep the recording, because it’s such a powerful opening of the album. So... claustrophobic.”

Is it difficult to listen back to those recordings? DARA KIELY: For a while it was, but now I’m

just kind of immune to it. Because I’ve heard it so often. We recorded that in 2015, when things were difficult for me. I see it as a good documentation of that time.

It reminded me of...The Blair Witch Project. ALAN DUGGAN: Or Darth Vader having sex? KIELY: Quite an artistic experience! (Laughs)

Artistic, but also very weird and disquieting. Song titles like “Akineton” and “Amygdala” are a good evocation of the atmosphere. And you have also decided not to use any pronouns in the lyrics, which only adds to the confusion. KIELY: Meditation led me to explore Buddhism. There is a famous quotation from the Buddha: “Nothing is to be clung to as I, me,

consist entirely of palindromes. Smart, but it must have taken a long time to write. KIELY: Not really. I just surfed to the website palindromes.com, and I picked the best ones that didn’t have pronouns in them. (Laughs) DUGGAN: When I told my wife that Dara had written a lyric with only palindromes in it, she went, “Oh, my God, Dara’s a fucking genius!” When I told her two seconds later that he got them from the internet, she said, “Yeah, obviously he fucking did.” KIELY: For two seconds I was a fucking genius! DUGGAN: The original idea for that song came from watching Twin Peaks. There’s this scene in the Red Room when agent Dale Cooper meets The Man from Another Place. The way he speaks, sounds very strange. David Lynch used phonetic reversal for those scenes: he recorded the words and played them in reverse, after which the actor learned the words backwards. That was re-recorded and then reversed in the normal word direction. So we tried and recorded the guitars backwards, and played them in reverse. The Beastie Boys did a similar thing with “Paul Revere”, when they recorded a beat on an 808 backwards.

I read that Marvin Gaye was another inspiration for The Talkies. I must admit that he didn’t immediately come to mind when I listened to the record.

playing with it, though, because in the previous sentence I say: “That’s just mental.” Those two sentences seem to contradict each other, but then they’re kind of the same.

You don’t specify the anxieties exactly, but the subversive, uncompromising music does express it. KIELY: Usually we write the music first, and then I write the lyrics. DUGGAN: I like the idea of making polarizing music. Particularly now because everyone is trying to be so polite.

Between the screeching scrap metal sounds, you also descry twisted techno beats, like in “Prefab Castle”. Where did you pick those up? DUGGAN: When we first started, in 2011, we

decided that we didn’t want to be the next band that was trying to sound like Radiohead. There are tons of bands doing that and doing it terribly. So we started exploring noise and pedals, but at the same time I got immersed in the techno scene. I lived in Prague for a while, and there was a flourishing dance scene back then. Along the way, we incorporated elements from that into our sound. There was a reason that we covered DJ Blawan’s “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?” For us, techno music has been just as informative as The Beatles.

DUGGAN: I spent a long time listening very

intensely to his album What’s Going On. That record is brilliant. And ours is a piece of shit. (Laughs) Anyway, musically, that album hooks together perfectly, with little bridges between each song. We tried to reproduce that song cycle, be it a noisy post-punk version.

What’s Going On was a concept album about the war in Vietnam and ecological awareness. Does The Talkies also have a leitmotif?

or mine.” That kind of clicked with me. Pronouns have a lot of weight to them; they make things very personal. I thought if I trimmed them out then it would give me a completely different platform to write. First of all, it took away a lot of potential pitfalls and clichés. But it was also a lot of fun. I love making up phrases and messing around with sentence structures.

One of the songs is called “Aibohphobia”, the term for a fear of palindromes. But the lyrics

KIELY: My father is a big John Lennon fan. I have always loved his weirdest lyric moments, like “I Am the Walrus”. And I am currently really into comedy, Monthy Python and things like that. I like to include absurdities in my lyrics too because it clashes really well with the screaming. But to answer your question: I usually only figure out the meaning of something I have written months after writing it.

Marvin Gaye asks what is going on, but in “Going Norway” you ask “What is normal?” KIELY: Is that not something you ask yourself ? I do it all the time. (Laughs) I have my issues, but everyone has issues. I just thought it was interesting to put it in there and get naked. I was in a bit of a jam when I wrote those words. I thought I just wanted to be normal. But what is normal? It’s really impossible to come up with a blanket term for that. I’m

The guitar scene in Dublin is getting a lot of attention. You are dragging Fontaines DC up onstage with you at the Botanique. What is your relationship with all the other bands? DUGGAN: Fontaines are good friends of ours.

We practice next door to them. The post-punk thing is mainly perpetuated by the media. There have always been good bands with guitars in Dublin. My Bloody Valentine, Rollerskate Skinny... If you go on and on about how amazing the scene is now, it’s an insult to all the great bands that came before us. KIELY: There’s an amazing lineage of Irish guitar music. Of course we love being a part of it, but there’s no more to it than that.

You were previously in Harrows, a band that you called “a shit version of the Strokes”. How would you describe Girl Band? KIELY: A shit version of Harrows. (Laughs)

Aanstormend talent en gevestigde namen uit de jazz en de klassieke wereld – zoals De Beren Gieren, luitist Jan Van Outryve en sopraan Lieselot De Wilde – creëren betrokkenheid en plezier bij uw kroost, zonder de zweem van paternalisme die vaak over jeugdvoorstellingen hangt. Die verdienste mag Wouter Van Looy mee opstrijken. “Mijn intuïtie klopte,” zegt de artistiek leider van Zonzo Compagnie die in 1995 zijn festivalconcept onder de naam Oorsmeer op gang trok. “Veel genres werden toen niet gedeeld met een jong publiek. De educatieve afdelingen van de theaters en de commerciële kanalen, die met Studio 100 begonnen te boomen, bepaalden wat kinderen te zien kregen. Ik vond dat er ook in de hedendaagse en geïmproviseerde muziek van pakweg John Cage, en zelfs in de abstracte klanken van Ligeti, een enorme rijkdom lag. Ik miste muzikale kwaliteit in het theateraanbod, maar vooral artistieke kwaliteit in het muziekaanbod voor kinderen.”

Als gastspreker op de jaarlijkse YAMawards voor innovatief jeugdtheater, waar Van Looy eerder deze maand met de multimediale voorstelling Thelonious in de prijzen viel, somde hij de valkuilen van het beroep op. “We mogen niet te snel tevreden zijn,” hekelde hij de goedbedoelde huisvlijt van muzikanten die het niet redden in het volwassenencircuit. “De lat moet hoger. Laat ons de zalen heroveren op de pedagogen. We hoeven kinderen niet eerst uit te leggen hoeveel snaren een instrument heeft. Volwassenen worden halverwege een voorstelling ook niet lastiggevallen met wat Shakespeare precies bedoelde. Leuk het artistieke niet op, want een jong publiek staat heel open voor wat volwassenen ‘moeilijk’ noemen. Jazz voor kinderen lijkt alleen maar een vreemd huwelijk, want het genre zet de deur open naar improvisatie en het moment zelf.”

SHAKESPEARE Langzaamaan zou het ook de buitenwereld beginnen te dagen dat het niet de lichtste klassieke muziek hoeft te zijn die kinderen het meest aanspreekt. “We engageerden van bij het begin ook internationale toppers zoals Iva Bittová, avant-garde-icoon Meredith Monk en klankkunstenaar Hans van Koolwijk, en dat werd

Great Britain wants to leave the European Union, Donald Trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States, and within the walls of Fortress Europe, a horrifying representation of a crisis at the border is being propagated. The situation requires decisive action, but never fear, our leaders will “clean up” the mess. In that same month, Dina Nayeri responded to those who govern by tweet with slightly more than 280 characters. Her viral essay “The ungrateful refugee: ‘We have no debt to repay’”, published in The Guardian, was the first time she rubbed salt in the pulsating wound of a society that is increasingly being torn apart. “It is the obligation of every person born in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks,” she wrote. “It is your duty to answer us, even if we don’t give you sugary success stories. Even if the country gets overcrowded and you have to give up your luxuries, and we set up ugly little lives around the corner, marring your view.” “There was this kernel of anger, this thing that I had bottled up for so long, that came out in that essay,” Dina Nayeri explains when we call her in Paris, where she is spending a year as a Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas & Imagination. “I received a lot of hate mail after the essay, messages from trolls and people who had clearly only seen the title. But there were also some very kind emails, from people who said: ‘I didn’t realize that this was something that refugees struggled with. And I’m heartbroken that I might have contributed to this. Is there anything else that I don’t know?’ And I thought: ‘Oh my God, there is so

much else!’ There’s so much shame that we have, and because of that a lot goes unsaid: during the escape, in waiting, when stuck in the camps, in the asylum-seeking process, and in assimilation… That’s why I wrote this book.” That book has just been published under the cursed title The Ungrateful Refugee. “Of course it was hard to take that terrible phrase and hold it up as a kind of flag. But anyone who has read my book, knows that I am profoundly grateful and that I carry this burden with me all the time. But I’m tired of having to posture that for the benefit of people who were lucky enough not to have spent their formative years in a refugee camp.”

A LIFE IN 230 QUESTIONS “These are stories of uprooting and transformation without guarantees, of remaking the face and the body, those first murderous refugee steps,” as one razor-sharp line in The Ungrateful Refugee reads. Refugees are expected to be humble and grateful, and to wear that gratitude like a second skin. Even if it eradicates their own identity. It is a feeling that Dina Nayeri herself knows all too well. As the daughter of a doctor and a dentist from Isfahan in Iran, she grew up in the 1980s, which were marked by a war with Iraq and a repressive Islamic regime. When her mother, who was born as a Muslim but converted to Christianity during a stay in England, was threatened by the regime, the mother, daughter, and son fled the country. Over a period of sixteen months, they travelled to the United States via Dubai and Rome. Ending up in Oklahoma, she made sure to

study hard, she got into Princeton and Harvard, and steadily shook off her refugee identity. But she grew suspicious of what she had been doing all this time. “Going to college, falling in love, getting married and divorced, every single thing that I did in my life somehow instinctively I would relate back to that experience of leaving Iran and being a refugee,” Dina Nayeri says. “It was almost like this was a black hole, swallow-

A FEARFUL CLOUD “I understand that it’s hard to hold complexity in our hearts and minds,” Dina Nayeri adds, “and to understand that there are things that are hard to solve, that will take a lot of hands, and that will take a lot of thinking. It is difficult to know that we’ll be wrong many times, that we’ll be embarrassed in our efforts, and that

we’ll be thwarted, but we’ll have to just accept that, because otherwise our human nature will simplify all of these beautiful stories and make them into this one fearful cloud. That way, we rob people of their dignity and their humanity.” “People need to realize that we live in a world with borders, where resources are unfairly allocated, and where some people are dying. People need to think back to how they ended up in this position of extreme privilege. It is not right or just that you have the stability and the home that you have. So how can you possibly expect anything from this other person? You can’t force love, gratitude, or assimilation. It is a natural, reciprocal process, we assimilate to each other. What you can expect from any human being is kindness, friendship, and cooperation in making a community.” Dina Nayeri puts her finger on the wound while at the same time applying the plaster that it needs to heal: through complexity, doubt, and wonderfully fluctuating stories. Through Dina Nayeri’s own history and the vicissitudes of other refugees whom she visited in camps in Greece or whom she spoke to while they were going through the Dutch asylum procedure. These are stories about the right kind of truth, the one little mistake, about self-doubt, entitlement, giant losses, little dramas in unlikely places… It is that fluidity that characterizes The Ungrateful Refugee. eks(e)(n) is van ver gebaseerd op Johann Wolfgang Goethes Die Wahlverwandtschaften – Natuurlijke verwantschap of Affiniteiten in het Nederlands –, door de schrijver in 1809 opgezet als een Temptation Island-achtig amoureus experiment met een vierhoeksverhouding onderhevig aan de tegengestelde krachten van natuurlijke drift en ratio.

Lag dat boek al lang op de plank bij de KOE? NATALI BROODS: Het boek gaat over een koppel

dat een vriend van de man en de nicht van de vrouw uitnodigt. Die vier ‘kruisen’ dan, er ontstaan twee nieuwe koppels. Maar de tekst is redelijk oud. De manier waarop we over thema’s als relaties en gender denken, verandert voortdurend en is heel actueel, dus het boek zal alleen nog in de fundamenten van het stuk terug te vinden zijn. We gaan het niet spelen. PETER VAN DEN EEDE: We hebben zelf een compleet nieuwe tekst geschreven met een aantal soortgelijke basisgegevens. Behalve twee quotes hebben we geen fragmenten uit het boek gerecupereerd.

Ook de titel is anders. Wat drukt seks(e)(n) allemaal uit? BROODS: We hebben het over seks, over sekse,

en ook over seksen als synoniem voor ‘kruisen’, zoals je ook met bloemen en planten doet. Op die manier gaat het ook over identiteit. Als je seksuele oriëntatie anders is dan wat voorheen als ‘normaal’ werd beschouwd, dan bepaalt dat in belangrijke mate je identiteit, en dreigt je omgeving je er zelfs mee te laten samenvallen. Terwijl identiteit nooit eenduidig is. Daar liggen ook links naar de verhouding tussen natuur en cultuur, en zo komen we op een bepaald moment bij het klimaat terecht. Fascinerend in het boek van Goethe vind ik dat de personages altijd maar bezig zijn met het aanleggen van hun tuin. Ze willen met die tuin de natuur controleren. Vandaag kan je in tegenstelling tot de tijd van Goethe nog maar moeilijk een stukje wilde natuur vinden. Toch kan je niet bepaald zeggen dat we de natuur nog kunnen controleren. VAN DEN EEDE: Het gaat om de oude existentiële vraag: “Wie zijn wij eigenlijk?” Die duikt ook in ons werk telkens weer in vernieuwde contexten op, geconfronteerd met telkens nieuwe paradoxen. Wat is het effect als we de natuur-

lijke aard van een persoon, of van de natuur in het algemeen, onderdrukken? Welke gevolgen heeft die repressie op ons zijn? Daar liggen parallellen tussen de omgang van de mensheid met de natuur en het klimaat, en de omgang van een mens met zijn natuurlijke geaardheid. Als de natuur altijd sterker is, dan is er een spanningsveld tussen natuurlijke geaardheid en culturele identiteit. Een identiteit op basis van natuurlijke geaardheid kan ook ontaarden in een cultureel imago. Ze kan je in hokjes laten belanden eerder dan je dichter bij jezelf brengen. Als je altijd wordt aangesproken op of

“Seks(e)(n) gaat om die oude existentiële vraag: ‘Wie zijn wij eigenlijk?’” gereduceerd tot die deelidentiteit, wil je ook weer ontsnappen uit dat hokje, of riskeer je nieuwe negatieve connotaties. Dat is een van de redenen waarom woorden en termen voortdurend veranderen. Wie vroeger gehandicapt was, was daarna mindervalide, dan andersvalide en momenteel een persoon met een beperking. Nog een vraag die vandaag meer en meer gesteld wordt, is wie wij als toneelspelers allemaal nog mogen spelen. Kan je als niet-queer een queer spelen, of als niet-zwarte een zwarte? Dat zijn vragen die naar de kern van de toneeelspeelkunst gaan.

In juli moest Studio Orka op het Manchester International Festival nog van een “personage met een beperking” een “personage met een

blessure” maken, omdat men in Groot-Brittanië vindt dat personages met een beperking ook moeten worden gespeeld door acteurs met een beperking. Zolang die acteurs niet volop in aanmerking komen voor alle mogelijke rollen, krijgen ze voor andersvalide rollen voorrang. VAN DEN EEDE: Dat wordt problematisch op het moment dat men toneelspelers gaat verbieden bepaalde rollen te laten spelen. Het kan niet zo zijn dat Hamlet voortaan alleen nog maar gespeeld kan worden door prinsen uit Denemarken, zei Willem (de Wolf) daarover. Een artistiek project kan geen invuloefening worden die ons wordt opgedrongen van bovenaf. BROODS: Bij ons spelen vrouwen al langer mannen en omgekeerd, en die vrijheid willen we behouden. Wel moeten alle minderheden eindelijk juist vertegenwoordigd worden in de theaterscholen en de theaters, zodat zij ook alle rollen kunnen spelen. Anders komen zij toch weer in die hokjes terecht. Wat je merkt in dit soort discussies, of het nu gaat over identiteit, discriminatie of klimaat, is dat het onderwerpen zijn die polariseren. Je hebt mensen die zich erover uiten en mensen die er niets over willen horen. Wij willen zeker niet moraliseren. We zetten voortdurend zelf kanttekeningen en vraagtekens.

Behouden jullie het gegeven van de twee koppels uit Goethes boek? BROODS: We houden niet vast aan personages. Nog meer dan in andere voorstellingen zijn we vrij om in één en dezelfde persoon op de scène verschillende meningen naar voor te laten komen. Onder meer in die zin heeft Goethes metafoor van het ‘kruisen’ ons geïnspireerd. VAN DEN EEDE: We zoeken met de KOE meer en meer naar inconsequentie. Alles loopt door elkaar, zoals in de werkelijkheid: hoe beter je iemand kent, hoe complexer hij wordt.

Het feit dat Goethe in zijn roman over cultuur en natuur ook met opzet liet doorschemeren dat die roman een constructie is, een cultureel product bij uitstek, moet jullie ook liggen. VAN DEN EEDE: We zijn voor een stuk onszelf en spreken elkaar ook aan met onze eigen namen, en toch spelen we. De teksten zijn waargebeurde verhalen verstrengeld met zoveel fictie dat we het graag misbruikte biografieën noemen. BROODS: En als we het hebben over een “misbruikte biografie” is dat niet om te verdoezelen wie wat zegt of vindt, maar om de tekst poëtischer, slimmer, verbeeldingrijker te maken.

Sorry We Missed You is vintage Ken Loach: a credible story about an average family that sees its chance at a bit of happiness destroyed by an inhuman system. — NIELS RUËLL

Knowing Ken Loach, his indignation about terrible working conditions is a bigger motivation than winning another Golden Palm. Even at 83 years old, he will jump to the defence of employees who get screwed over by exploitative companies while the government stands by and does nothing. In Sorry We Missed You the standard bearer of social-realist cinema casts a spotlight on the everyday misery of a family of four. The vast majority of their problems are caused by a lack of time for one another. That lack of time is a consequence of the working conditions of the mother and father. She is an overworked home nurse who is forced to deal with her patients at breakneck speed, while he grossly underestimated his new job as a delivery man. As a freelancer with his own van, he hopes to earn a good living (and pay off debts). But the contract with the courier company turns out to be a killer contract. The working hours are impossible, the risks are enormous, and the lack of rights is a slap in the face of anyone who ever made sacrifices in the struggle for workers’ rights. The last thing he needs on top of all this is an adolescent son who constantly skives off school and expresses his anger at dysfunctional society through graffiti. This is not the first time that the clever and meticulously researched script by Paul Laverty, who has been Loach’s right-hand-man for decades, is somewhat schematic, simplistic, and didactic. But

you hardly notice that because Loach’s realistic style is so efficient, the actors are so natural, and the scenes are so true to life. You don’t have to share Loach’s political ideas to believe what you see and to have respect for his directness. Sorry We Missed You doesn’t mince words, so we shouldn’t either. The day on which the socially committed born storyteller swaps his camera for his slippers and a good book will be a sad day for us all.

Ook op zijn 83e springt Ken Loach nog op de bres voor werknemers die genaaid worden terwijl de overheid erop kijkt. In Sorry we missed you belicht het boegbeeld van de sociaal-realistische cinema de alledaagse ellende van een gezin van vier. De problemen vloeien vooral voort uit een gebrek aan tijd voor elkaar, een gevolg van de arbeidsomstandigheden van moeder en vader. Zij is een overbevraagde thuisverpleegster, hij een pakjesbezorger die vasthangt aan een wurgcontract. Het voorbeeldig geresearchte scenario is wat simplistisch en didactisch, maar dat valt nauwelijks op, want Loach’ stijl is erg efficiënt, de acteurs ogen naturel en de scènes levensecht. NL

Dans Sorry we missed you, la figure de proue du réalisme social raconte la misère quotidienne d’une famille de quatre personnes. Les problèmes découlent principalement d’un manque de temps les uns pour les autres, conséquence des conditions de travail des parents. Elle est infirmière à domicile surexploitée, et lui, livreur de colis soumis à un contrat aliénant. Le scénario bien documenté est un peu simpliste et didactique mais le style de Loach n’en est pas moins efficace, le jeu des acteurs, des plus naturels, et les scènes, d’un réalisme percutant. FR

Geen idee of Georgiërs zich herkennen in dit onrechtstreekse portret van hun land. Flatterend is het niet, ook al weigert de in Zweden geboren regisseur Levan Akin om te somberen. Aan de hand van een coming-of-ageverhaal, verre familie van Girl, schetst hij een land dat nog wordt afgeremd door homofobie, patriarchaal conservatisme en de macht en invloed van de orthodoxe kerk. De jongere generaties lijken zich daar niet door te willen laten verlammen en drinken en feesten hun geld- en toekomstzorgen weg. Maar nu gaan we misschien iets te ver in het interpreteren. In de eerste plaats gaat de Zweedse Oscar-inzending over een jongeman die zich op de dansacademie al jaren te pletter werkt. Hij blijft maar oefenen op de imposante traditionele volksdansen in de hoop een plaats te verwerven in het Nationaal Ballet. Een charismatische nieuwkomer is zijn grootste concurrent, maar ook het voorwerp van zijn begeerte. Het verhaal verrast amper, maar dat geeft niet, want de afwisseling van wilde en tedere scènes werkt en de charismatische hoofdrolspeler speelt en danst met een passie die je meesleurt. (NR)

Rien ne va plus pour Henri. Surtout l’écriture. Ça craint parce que ce monsieur est écrivain. Depuis un livre à succès il y a 25 ans, il n’a publié que des niaiseries et des scénarios de films dont il a honte. La raison en est le fossé profond entre la vie dont il rêvait (basée à Rome) et la vie qu’il mène dans la pratique : avec quatre enfants adultes qui vivent encore sous son toit et qui mettent la pagaille et une femme qui a besoin de vin et d’antidépresseurs pour tenir le coup. Le réalisateur et rôle principal Yvan Attal a convaincu sa compagne Charlotte Gainsbourg d’interpréter sa femme. Il ose aller étonnamment loin dans la construction du personnage du vieil homme blanc cynique (pas le genre le plus populaire en ce moment) et frustré, mais aussi dans le désenchantement de la vie de famille. Il y a plus de mélancolie que d’humour dans son adaptation enjouée d’un roman américain de John Fante. Malheureusement, il se repose trop sur les répliques qui s’enchaînent et ne met pas à profit les possibilités cinématographiques. Le choix d’esquinter des chansons de Radiohead en les transformant en mélodies pour piano est malheureux. Passez-moi le vin et le Prozac ! (NR)

En Géorgie, pays entravé par l’homophobie, le conservatisme et l’Église orthodoxe, un jeune homme s’entraîne à fond à l’académie en danses folkloriques, dans l’espoir d’une place au Ballet National. Un nouveau venu charismatique devient son plus grand concurrent, mais aussi l’objet de son désir. Cette histoire de passage à l’âge adulte, en lice pour représenter la Suède aux Oscars, ne surprend guère, mais l’alternance de scènes tendres et sauvages fonctionne et l’acteur principal dégage une merveilleuse passion.

Schrijver Henri heeft sinds zijn 25 jaar oude succesboek alleen nog maar rommel gepubliceerd. De oorzaak legt hij bij de kloof tussen het leven waar hij van droomde en het leven dat hij leidt, met vier inwonende volwassen kinderen en een echtgenote die wijn en antidepressiva slikt om het uit te houden. Yvan Attal durft ver te gaan in het neerzetten van een cynische ouwe blanke man en het onttoveren van het gezinsleven. Maar zijn adaptatie van John Fante’s roman benut de cinematografische mogelijkheden amper.

In Georgia, a country that is being held back by homophobia, conservatism, and the Orthodox Church, a young man works incredibly hard to perfect traditional folk dancing in the hope of winning a place in the National Ballet. A charismatic newcomer is not only his biggest competition, but also the object of his desire. This coming-of-age story, the Swedish entry for the Oscars, is hardly surprising, but the alternation between wild and tender scenes really works and the lead actor exudes incredible passion.

Since he wrote a bestseller 25 years ago, author Henri has only published garbage. As far as he’s concerned, the problem is the gulf between the life that he dreamt of and the life that he leads, with four adult children who live at home and a wife who drinks and takes antidepressants to make it through the day. Attal has the guts to go quite far in his portrayal of a cynical white man and the disenchantment of family life. But his adaptation of John Fante’s novel capitalizes on almost none of its cinematographic potential.

Surrealisme in het kwadraat In 1929 reisde René Magritte naar het Spaanse Cadaqués om er zijn collega-surrealist Salvador Dalí te bezoeken. Negentig jaar later brengt die laatste een tegenbezoek aan Brussel voor een tentoonstelling in de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten. — MICHAËL BELLON Dalí & Magritte is niet alleen een gelegenheid om topwerk van Dalí te zien, maar betekent ook een ferme ‘tijdelijke uitbreiding’ van het Magritte Museum drie gangen verderop. Het honderdtal tentoongestelde werken zijn bijna allemaal schilderijen, met hier en daar een sculptuur en een schets. Op enkele uitzonderingen na dateren ze uit de surrealistische jaren van het interbellum tot iets na de Tweede Wereldoorlog – wanneer Magrittes période vache aanbreekt en voor de uitgeweken Dalí de Amerikaanse invloeden een grotere rol beginnen te spelen. Dat Dalí en Magritte naast en door

elkaar geplaatst worden, behoeft echt geen rechtvaardiging: in de decennia nadat ze eind jaren 1920 in Parijs definitief tot het surrealisme waren bekeerd, is hun werk voortdurend samen tentoongesteld. Hier worden vormelijk of inhoudelijk verwante werken naast elkaar geplaatst onder brede thema’s en motieven die het gemeenschappelijke universum en de onderlinge kruisbestuiving ten overvloede illustreren.

ONGERIJMD FEESTJE Een evident motief voor kunstenaars die de weergave van de werkelijkheid bevragen, is het oog.

Dat thema wordt niet alleen in de getoonde kortfilm Un chien andalou van Luis Buñuel en Dalí aangesneden, maar ook in werken van Magritte. Ook muzes Georgette en Gala, en het onafscheidelijke duo fallus en Venus keren herhaaldelijk terug. Voorts kan je zien wat beide heren aanvangen met vrouwenschoenen, vuurvattende voorwerpen, valse perspectieven, visuele trucjes, portretten die eruitzien als landschappen en landschappen die eruitzien als portretten. In de uitstekende bezoekersgids wordt dieper ingegaan op de combinatie van woorden en beelden, ontdek je verwijzingen naar Bosch of Millet, zoek je mee naar de onstaansgeschiedenis van Dalí’s gesmolten klokken, en verneem je meer over de vaderfiguur bij Dalí of de moederfiguur bij Magritte. Ondertussen zie je met eigen ogen dat Dalí de virtuozere, flamboyantere, detaillistischere schilder is van de twee, en dat Magritte toch iets ingetogener te werk gaat. Maar deze kwadratuur van het surrealisme zorg er vooral voor dat je wereldbeeld aan het glijden gaat. Het festival van geestverruimende ongerijmdheden bezweert angsten, twijfels en verlangens, maar roept ze ook op.

Installé au rez-de-chaussée du mythique bâtiment CBR à Boitsfort, Midori propose le lunch le plus moderniste de la capitale. En la matière, Fosbury & Sons, qui s’est d’abord fait connaître à Anvers, a frappé un grand coup en aimantant créatifs et autres entrepreneurs par le biais du légendaire immeuble de la chaussée de La Hulpe, tout le monde connaît ses distinctives vitres cuivrées, qui fut imaginé pour les cimenteries CBR. Située à Boitsfort, l’adresse est un véritable repère patrimonial de la ville. Portant la marque des architectes Constantin Brodzki et Marcel Lambrichs, ce géant de béton est culte.Pour preuve, il figure, depuis 2018, sur la liste de sauvegarde de la Région… mais surtout, il permit à Brodzki d’être le seul Belge à être au casting de l’exposition Transformations in Modern Architecture 1960-1980 du MoMA (1980). Pouvoir pousser la porte de cet édifice est un véritable privilège. La bonne nouvelle est que cela est désormais accessible à toutes et à tous à la faveur du Midori, un endroit à la fois bar et cantine, qui occupe une partie du rez-de-chaussée. C’est avec une vive émotion que l’on laisse flâner son regard à travers les très sculpturales fenêtres ovales qui sont la signature du lieu. Côté déco, la

salle fait place à un mobilier en bois qui épouse parfaitement l’environnement bétonné – mention pour le monumental comptoir qui segmente la pièce, ainsi que pour les deux tables d’hôtes éclairées à la façon d’une salle de lecture de bibliothèque. Bien vu, une grande sculpture blanche ponctue l’espace, sa présence est le fruit d’un partenariat avec la galerie Guy Pieters. Le menu est ici tout simple : une soupe, deux toasts différents (pastrami ou ricotta) et autant de « bowls » du jour. Va pour la version végétarienne (15,90 euros) des bols en question qui, à dire vrai, ont davantage l’allure d’assiettes. Verdict ? La préparation est très correcte qui panache légumes grillés (aubergine, poivron, courgette), quinoa, nuggets de légumes, patate douce, épinards avec des amandes effilées et crudités (radis noirs, roquette, germes de poireaux). L’ensemble tient la route, même s’il y a un petit côté « fourre-tout » qui déconcerte. Par exemple, on ne comprend pas la présence d’une sauce à l’ail qui se partage l’assiette avec un coulis tomaté, ce qui nuit à l’harmonie de l’ensemble. Toujours est-il que la force de l’endroit est telle que l’on reviendra ici. C’est sûr.

Het legendarische CBR-gebouw in Watermaal-Bosvoorde is nu toegankelijk voor iedereen dankzij Midori, een bar-restaurant dat een spectaculair uitzicht biedt door de karakteristieke ovaalvormige ramen. De inrichting zet helemaal de puntjes op de i. Het menu is eenvoudig: ja kan hier soep krijgen, toast met pastrami of ricotta, en verschillende bowls van de dag, die eerlijk gezegd meer weg hebben van borden. De vegetarische versie (€15,90) combineert gegrilde groenten (als aubergine, paprika en courgette), quinoa, zoete aardappel, spinazie met amandelschilfers en een rauwkostsalade. Lekker, zij het ook een beetje een allegaartje. Maar ze zien ons hier zeker terug. NL

The decor complements the space perfectly. The menu is simple: a soup, toast with either pastrami or ricotta, and several “bowls” of the day which, to be honest, are more like plates. Het klassieke oorlogsdrama vertelt de lotgevallen van Elisabeth (Katrien De Ruysscher) die moet kiezen tussen een gecultiveerde Duitser (Tom Van Bauwel) en een Brusselse dokter (Bert Verbeke). Requiems of dodenmissen zijn een specifiek muziekgenre. Ze roepen de luisteraar met vaak grote, krachtige en intense gebaren op tot rouw en herinnering. Verdriet, woede, angst en berusting zijn de emoties waarop componisten van deze liturgische werken, vaak met koor en orkest, expliciet mikken. Dirigent Hervé Niquet, een perfectionistische klankkleurenmenger met veel gevoel voor drama, serveert op dit concert twee werken uit de Franse romantiek: een dodenmis uit 1816 voor Louis XVI en Marie-Antoinette, van Jean-Paul-Égide Martini én de zeer gevoelsrijke Messe solennelle van Hector Berlioz. On the album Ancestral Recall, the American jazz trumpet player and band leader Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah reconciled the past and the future. Rhythms from West Africa, the Caribbean, and his hometown of New Orleans are treated with equal respect. “It’s inherently jazz, but it’s not exclusively that,” as he recently described his stretch music. As the grandson of an important Mardi Gras Big Chief, the heritage of The Big Easy and painful Native American history naturally course through his veins. De doeken van Gutheil tonen vaak vreemde creaturen in weelderige, droomachtige decors. Samen met de totemachtige houten sculpturen en maskers van Doucet, waarin dromen, tradities en natuurkrachten vervat zitten, leggen ze zich als een alternatieve dimensie over de werkelijkheid die ons omringt.
