“Mijn visie op de stad is eerder melancholisch dan nostalgisch. Ik zie Brussel als mysterieus en spookachtig: de stad is meer verlaten dan veel andere hoofdsteden. De plekken die ik fotografeer, zoals hier Thurn & Taxis, zijn niet altijd direct herkenbaar, omdat ze zich in een staat van transformatie bevinden, ingericht voor tijdelijke evenementen of ontsierd door wisselvallige weersomstandigheden. Mijn beelden zijn als foto’s ‘na het feest’, het Brussel met zijn natte straatstenen, net voor de zon opkomt en de mist optrekt.“ NL

Anne De Gelas woont en werkt in Brussel. Haar oeuvre is een combinatie van tekst, tekeningen en foto’s. Na de boeken Carnets (2003) en L’amoureuse (2013) verschijnt haar nieuwe reeks Mère et fils in december bij Éditions Loco.

Een wonder van techniek waar inmiddels geen vervangstukken meer voor te vinden zijn, zo zou je Eddy Vermeulen en zijn unieke talent kunnen omschrijven. Aangedreven door Hergés klare lijn, de speelse dynamiek van Franquin en het werk van Macherot en Masereel, doorbrak hij als illustrator decennialang de geluidsmuur voor bladen en tijdschriften als Humo, The New Yorker, Libération, Raw, OOR en Vrij Nederland. Met Ever Meulen & Friends eert Seed Factory de jongeman – van intussen 71 – die met zijn verwonderde blik, uitbundige fantasie, subtiele humor en elegante evenwicht popsterren, stadsscènes en vrouwen verbeeldde. Én die zijn furieuze passie voor vierwielers – van het soort dat onveilig, oncomfortabel en traag is – heeft weten te vertalen in waanzinnig onverkoopbare, retrofuturistische ontwerpen als de Nisiov.

Behalve werk van de meester van de op uitbreken staande stroomlijn, toont Seed Factory ook hommages van een 150-tal van zijn collega’s, zoals Gerda Dendooven, François Schuiten, Philippe Geluck, What’s in a name? (zie beeld) en Joost Swarte.

Brussels boasts an incredibly varied and dynamic scene of micro-editors, self-publishers, and artist collectives that find absolute creative freedom in their personal work. This is no different for the thirty-odd initiatives that are being brought together by Eat My Paper at Recyclart on 28 October: from photographers and bookbinders to comic strip creators and graphic artists. The salon for independent publishing that was founded by Marseille-born photographer Camille Carbonaro – who will herself be present with her independent publishing house Macaronibook – offers irresistible delicacies that combine a passion for paper with curiosity and inventiveness. Haute cuisine, in short, from which no connoisseur will leave unsated.

“The river that everything drags is known as violent, but nobody calls violent the margins that arrest her.” THOT frontman Grégoire Fray actually quoted Bertolt Brecht when he announced FLEUVE. Twelve years after their debut, the Brussels band is staying cool in apocalyptic waters.

Nine new tracks, each named after a European river or strait, alternate between the familiar industrial noise sound, mean postpunk/wave/goth exclamations, and darkly romantic reflections. At the same time, they defend the old continent by paying tribute to its mythology, its nature, and its women.

La ville industrielle allemande de Wuppertal a tout d’une « ville discrète ». De taille moyenne, quelconque, elle a inspiré peu de grandes productions littéraires et cinématographiques, ce qui lui vaut d’être quasi absente de nos imaginaires. C’est précisément pour cette raison que les programmateurs du nouveau festival BRIK y ont posé leurs valises. Ils sont désormais de retour avec un festival multidisciplinaire au Brass situé entre « carnet de voyage, réflexion sociologique, exposition et kermesse ».

L’événement s’ouvre le samedi 28 avec une journée folle comprenant visites guidées, balades organisées dans Forest, dégustation de bières locales et concerts. L’exposition est à voir gratuitement pendant une semaine. Longue vie aux villes discrètes !

Het kan aan ons liggen, maar wij hebben de indruk dat er een bijzonder interessante editie van het Bâtard Festival voor jonge internationale podiumkunstenaars in het verschiet ligt. Ogutu Muraya onderzoekt het lichaam van de loper, Oliver Zahn de gestrekte arm van de Hitlergroet, Wojtek Ziemilski de geheimen van gebarentaal en Dounia Mahammed elk individu als een mysterie. Andere kunstenaars verslepen dan weer een sculptuur van de trappen van de Beurs naar de Beursschouwburg, kapen amateurdansvideo’s van het internet, plannen een inbraak in de Nationale Bank via een tunnel vanuit een bloemen­winkel, of organiseren een work-out met sculpturen.

Intergalactic Lovers have taken a deep breath over the past few years and blown out Exhale, a vivacious record on which the guitars have been tightened up and Lara Chedraoui’s voice is as enchanting as ever. — TOM ZONDERMAN

ICELAND “Lessines is like Iceland on a shoestring,” singer Lara Chedraoui laughs. The group went to the Walloon village with its picturesque stone quarries to film the music video for “Between the Lines”, the first single from their recent, third album. The village also happens to be the birthplace of René Magritte. “Our music video director, Jeff Bronder, knew the location. The idea of filling the video with references to Magritte only came later. Of course we knew his work, it is so iconic, but we have now penetrated his playful questioning of reality more deeply. He would have been a great friend of the Lovers.” “We are not complete surrealists,” bassist Raf De Mey nods, “but we do see something of ourselves in the humour with which Magritte looked at the world.”

SAMURAI “Apart from (drummer) Brendan (Corbey), we are very bookish people,” Chedraoui says. “And we like to pass around the things that inspire us, like a virus spreading,” De Mey says. “The Life of Miyamoto Musashi was one of these little viruses. I bought it in Japan when we were performing there. Musashi was a legendary seventeenth-century samurai who renounced all earthly possessions and accepted every duel to the death. That is also how he painted: every brushstroke had to be exact. His life philosophy was a revelation.”

“Even before we had read the book, it was something we had practiced in making this record,” Chedraoui explains. “Taking a leap without overthinking things, but trusting that whatever we do is the right choice.

Nah!”

OH DARKNESS “Hello darkness, my old friend,” are the first words of the song “Fears”, exactly the same as the ones Paul Simon penned in 1963 when, standing in his bathroom with the lights switched off, “The Sound of Silence” came to him. “I honestly did not know that when I wrote the song,” Chedraoui says. “I have no idea what Simon meant by it, but I was thinking about the darkness that you can never completely let go.

Everyone has a shadow. Sometimes it hangs over your head and then it crushes you. Sometimes you manage to ignore it, and those are the moments when you think: I have everything under control. And then the beast gets back in your head. Fortunately, I am surrounded by angels like Raf, Brendan, and (guitarist) Maarten (Huygens), they teach me to negotiate the world.”

KICK BOX Last summer, we wondered whether Intergalactic Lovers are boxing fanatics during their great set at Pukkelpop, in which Lara Chedraoui sauntered onto the stage in something that looked very much like a shiny boxing jacket. “Ha ha, no. Actually that was an outfit that I pinched from Raf’s wardrobe,” the singer confesses. “A kimono from the 42|54 collection, Elodie Ouedraogo and Olivia Borlée’s clothing line. I used to kick box, between the ages of 19 and 23, but I think I am better at dealing with my rage and frustration in words. I’m not going to start hitting things! Actually, it was our first time at Pukkelpop, and we had been away for a while. I thought it was incredibly cool, and that’s why I wanted a special outfit: it’s my time to shine!”

EXHALE “It’s a yoga album,” Raf De Mey laughs about Intergalactic Lovers’ third album. OK, in the candid explanation she just gave us, it does sound quite ethereal, Lara Chedraoui nods, but she thinks the record is much too tempestuous for yoga. In the music – the band convinced Pixies producer Gil Norton to come to Aalst and pushed the Feist influence to the background to make room for rough guitars – but especially in the lyrics. “I can sometimes be very sad and angry about what’s going on in the world,” she says. “And then the two historians in the band tell me that it has never been good. [Laughs] The problem is that everything gets documented and communicated. People were sometimes thrown off towers in the Middle Ages, but the videos didn’t go viral on Facebook.”

That is the big difference: while Little Heavy Burdens, their last album, was about their own little troubles, now they are looking at the world around them in which “we see many people short-circuiting,” De Mey says. “It is crazy how fast you get steamrollered by everything these days,” Chedraoui says. “Everything is so fucking hard, and I’m only 32. Sometimes I hear myself talk and I sound as though I am 80. [Laughs] Just think about all the stimuli that get thrown at you when you walk down the street. It sometimes makes me sick. When I’m stuck on an overcrowded train with hundreds of people, I hide under my headphones.”

“Inhaling and exhaling seems really easy,” Chedraoui says when we ask about the album’s title. “But when you panic, you start to hyperventilate and it becomes difficult to find your breath. When I look around, I see a lot of people who have great difficulty with exactly that: breathing freely.”

es sœurs jumelles de 25 ans Doris et Nathalie Bokongo Nkumu qui ont grandi dans la danse, ont trouvé dans le hip-hop la culture et le langage pour enchanter leur monde. C’est dans les halls des gares qu’elles ont exploré et développé leur gestuelle, leur énergie et leur complicité. Avides d’apprendre, elles ont goûté à d’autres danses dans les cultures urbaines et en dehors. Avec leur premier spectacle créé avec l’appui de la chorégraphe Marion Motin, elles ont commencé à se produire en salle en Belgique et à l’étranger. Au KVS, elles ont participé au spectacle transculturel Malcolm X. Les voici de retour rue de Flandre pour le Festival Lezarts Danses Urbaines où elles présenteront, au KVS Box, la première ébauche de leur nouvelle création autour de la gémellité. Évidemment fusionnelle.

D’où vient votre passion pour la danse hip-hop, comment cela a-t-il commencé ?

DORIS BOKONGA NKUMU : Il y avait toujours

beaucoup de musique à la maison et on a toujours aimé danser et bouger. On faisait des petits spectacles pour la famille. En grandissant, on a découvert le hip-hop qu’on a commencé à danser entre amis. On savait qu’il y avait des crews qui se réunissaient à la gare du Luxembourg pour danser. On est allées voir par curiosité. Et tout de suite ça nous a plu, on a eu envie de rester. On est venues s’entraîner trois fois par semaine. On se regardait danser les uns les autres et on faisait des exercices. Il n’y avait pas vraiment de professeurs, c’était généralement les plus anciens qui montraient aux plus jeunes ce qu’ils savaient faire.

Comment un hobby est-il devenu une occupation à plein temps ?

NATHALIE BOKONGA NKUMU : Quand on était

jeunes, c’était en mode: on va s’entraîner et danser avec des amis. Et puis on a commencé à voir ça autrement que comme un simple amusement. On a eu envie de participer à des battles et on s’est mises à structurer nos

mouvements, établir un programme d’entraînements et réfléchir à ce qu’on voulait faire passer. Le déclic n’est pas venu directement.

On s’est dit qu’on pourrait peut-être vivre de ça et toucher plus de monde en travaillant des spectacles pour la scène.

Et vous avez commencé par développer votre propre style.

DORIS : Dans notre danse, il y a différents styles

qui se mélangent, on s’est beaucoup inspirées de tous les courants du hip-hop, de la danse africaine, du reggae ou de la danse contemporaine. On a toujours eu la curiosité de s’intéresser aux autres danses par des workshops et des masterclass.

Et vous avez même été jusqu’aux États-Unis pour apprendre ?

DORIS : On a eu envie d’aller aux sources du

hip-hop et de rencontrer les piliers du mouvement. On a passé un mois à New York où on a profité de l’énergie et de la vibe de la ville. On

Lezarts Danses Urbaines Depuis quinze ans, le Festival Lezarts Danses Urbaines prend le pouls de la danse hip-hop qui se réinvente sans cesse depuis la rue et les salles de quartier jusqu’aux scènes plus officielles où elles rencontrent un autre public. Explications avec Kristin Rogghe, dramaturge urbaine au KVS et Flora Chassang, responsable du chantier danse chez Lezarts Urbains.

avait bien préparé le séjour. Dès le premier jour, on s’est inscrites aux cours qui nous intéressaient. On a fait de la danse contemporaine, du jazz, de l’afro. On est parties pour la danse et on a fait que ça pendant un mois, ça nous a ressourcées.

Quand vous vous êtes produites en salle avec un premier spectacle, ça a dû vous changer des gares ?

DORIS : Oui, c’était très différent. Notre

Si tout ça c’est encore du chinois pour vous, ne paniquez pas, le Festival Lezarts Danses Urbaines, organisé par Lezarts Urbains en partenariat avec le KVS, devrait vous permettre d’y voir plus clair dans tous ces styles de danses urbaines. Pendant une journée, des crews d’amateurs, venus d’écoles de danse, des personnalités émergentes ou des danseurs pros de la scène hip-hop vont vous surprendre par leur créativité et leur technique.

LA MAISON DU HIP-HOP ?

Le KVS est une maison ouverte sur la ville qui a déjà accueilli des spectacles qui laissent parler la danse hip-hop, mais c’est la première fois qu’ils accueillent une journée de festival. « À Bruxelles, c’est une scène créative et dynamique à laquelle nous voulons donner de la place en nous associant avec ceux qui ont l’expertise et l’expérience de cette culture », explique Kristin Rogghe. « Nous avons fait quelques suggestions dans la programmation en invitant Sheyda Darab, une chorégraphe d’Amsterdam en collaboration avec Right About Now Inc. Ce qui nous permet aussi de proposer à un des artistes que nous soutenons, Yassin Mrabtifi, une résidence à Amsterdam pour son spectacle From Molenbeek with love qui sera présenté en avril 2018 au KVS. »

BRUXELLES, UNE VILLE HIP-HOP ?

Le festival, qui en est à sa quinzième édition, a suivi l’évolution de la scène hip-hop dans la capitale. « Il y a énormément de danseurs urbains à Bruxelles comme dans les autres grandes villes. Ce sont des jeunes très motivés qui ont envie de se professionnaliser, mais malheureusement, il y a encore très peu de formations et de scènes en dehors du tremplin hip-hop au centre culturel Jacques Franck. Aux Lezarts Urbains, nous soutenons et accompagnons à l’année quelques groupes », explique Flora Chassang.

DES DANSEURS QUI EN VEULENT PLUS ? « Il y a des danseurs urbains qui ont envie d’évoluer vers la danse contemporaine et d’autres qui veulent approfondir le style hip-hop.

Je crois qu’il est important de créer des conditions pour qu’ils puissent, les uns comme les autres, travailler dans de bonnes conditions techniques et partager leurs expériences », poursuit Flora Chassang. « C’est aussi la raison pour laquelle nous venons de commencer, avec des théâtres partenaires, le projet européen Mind Your Step qui offre à des danseurs urbains en résidence les moyens techniques et logistiques pour développer leurs propres créations dans le cadre qu’ils ont choisi. Nous leur proposons aussi des workshops et masterclass autour, par exemple, de la production et de la gestion financière d’un spectacle », conclut Kristin Rogghe.

On a pris plaisir à être sur scène pour partager nos mouvements, notre énergie et notre connexion.

Une fois que vous avez commencé à tourner dans des salles, avez-vous continué à vous entraîner à la gare ?

NATHALIE : On a besoin de garder ce contact avec

nos racines. Ça nous fait du bien de nous retrouver avec les danseurs. C’est de là qu’on vient et ce n’est pas parce qu’on présente un spectacle en salle qu’on va effacer nos origines.

Pour nous c’est revenir à la source, c’est comme un repère.

DORIS : Avant d’être des danseuses, on est d’abord des filles du mouvement hip-hop, c’est ça qui nous a donné notre manière de voir, de penser, de danser. On est dans cet esprit-là et on le restera. Quand on est sur scène, on a envie de faire parler notre âme hip-hop, c’est au cœur de tout ce qu’on fait et on ne veut certainement pas l’effacer.

NATHALIE BOKONGO NKUMU :

« On a commencé à la gare et ce n’est pas parce qu’on présente un spectacle en salle qu’on va effacer nos origines » D’où vient le nom Les Mybalés ?

NATHALIE : C’est en lien avec nos racines. On est

d’origine congolaise, mybalé veut dire « deux » en lingala. C’est en fait le danseur Zach Swagga qui nous a initiées à la house dance qui nous avait proposé ce nom. On s’est vite senties bien avec et maintenant presque plus personne ne nous a plus appelées Doris et Nathalie.

Vous avez participé à pas mal de battles, comment ça se passe ?

DORIS : On se rencontre deux contre deux ou

plus généralement un contre un et il y a toute une série d’éliminatoires jusqu’à la finale. À chaque étape, on a de 45 secondes à une minute pour se défendre. Une battle, il faut la

Votre nouveau spectacle aborde le thème de la gémellité, c’était une évidence ?

DORIS : C’est un nouveau challenge pour nous

puisqu’on va le chorégraphier et l’interpréter. Ça nous tenait à cœur. Le but n’est pas d’expliquer la vie de jumelles. On a fait beaucoup de recherches, on a regardé des documentaires, des fictions et des témoignages. Ma sœur et moi, nous sommes fusionnelles, mais entre jumeaux, ce n’est pas toujours l’amour fou ou la fusion. On a rencontré d’autres jumeaux. On a parlé avec notre entourage pour avoir un regard extérieur et entendre les questions que les gens peuvent se poser sur la gémellité.

Après ça, on a commencé à structurer notre travail par étapes au cours de différentes résidences. On a fait des exercices où on se donnait des contraintes comme, par exemple, se regarder et ne plus se quitter des yeux, quel que soit le mouvement. On essaie de travailler vraiment en symbiose pour avancer plus loin.

Ça fait quelle différence de travailler à deux quand on est jumelles ?

DORIS : On se connaît toutes les deux. On aime

travailler ensemble, c’est plus évident. Quand je m’entraîne avec une autre personne, c’est différent.

NATHALIE : Travailler avec Doris, c’est plus facile, on se comprend. Il y a une connexion, une énergie qui est là, elle est naturelle, pas calculée. préparer, revoir des mouvements, des enchaînements, c’est comme un athlète qui prépare les jeux olympiques. Il y a bien évidemment une bonne dose de stress parce qu’on veut bien faire.

C’est comme quand on dit : « je n’aime pas les chicons », il faut d’abord les goûter avant de se prononcer.

Qu’est-ce que ça vous apporte ?

Au KVS, vous avez aussi participé au spectacle Malcolm X de Fikry El Azzouzi et Junior Mthombeni.

DORIS : Il faut s’adapter parce qu’on ne connaît

pas à l’avance les breaks ou les mix que le DJ va balancer, mais ça s’apprend. Tu ne dois pas prendre ton temps, il faut être efficace.

Toujours dans l’énergie. On te juge sur ton groove, sur ta technique, sur ton originalité. Tu es là pour montrer ce que tu as, si tu as gagné quelque chose en plus, c’est top. Si tu vas en finale, tu as eu l’occasion de montrer l’éventail de ce que tu sais faire. On n’en fait plus pour le moment parce qu’on n’a plus le temps, mais on y reviendra certainement.

Vous avez fait une performance à Bozar dans le cadre de Yo!. Qu’est-ce que ce genre d’exposition représente, la récupération ou la consécration culturelle ?

DORIS : Tout le monde a le droit de s’intéresser

à la culture hip-hop. Parmi les gens qui viennent pour la première fois à l’un de nos spectacles, il y en a qui sont attirés par ça et d’autres qui ont entendu ou vu des choses

DORIS : Comme elle sent ce que je fais, on aime

bien se surprendre. On aime bien se challenger.

Elle va voir que j’ai une idée de feu. Dans la danse, c’est comme dans la vie, on aime se surprendre. Même si on se connaît, c’est toujours bien de se surpasser, sinon on stagne.

On veut évoluer, grandir, entre nous.

DORIS : C’était une expérience complètement

nouvelle pour nous. C’était magnifique. On a pu rencontrer beaucoup de gens. De là où on vient on n’aurait jamais imaginé participer à un spectacle comme ça avec une bande de ouf, des comédiens, des rappeurs, des danseurs.

NATHALIE : Pour le peu qu’on nous demandait de réciter, une seule phrase, on a reçu des conseils très utiles. Comme on n’a jamais suivi des cours de comédie, ça nous donne des

compagnie et voyager avec notre production.

DORIS : J’ai envie que notre spectacle soit un

succès pour qu’on puisse le présenter dans différents endroits. J’aimerais aussi travailler avec d’autres gens, danseurs, artistes ou musiciens. Comme on fait maintenant, en fait, mais encore plus.

Jazz tussen de regels Pianist Kris Defoort duikt in de poëzie

Genres en disciplines vermengen, dat deed Kris Defoort al lang voor het mainstream werd. Met zijn Diving Poet Society duikt de componist, pianist en improvisator opnieuw het ongewisse in, dit keer in het gezelschap van gedich­ten van Peter Verhelst. — TOM PEETERS

e opera The time of our singing, naar de klepper van de Amerikaanse schrijver Richard Powers, slorpt al geruime tijd haast al zijn aandacht op. Het boek van dik 600 pagina’s is intussen een libretto van dik 60 pagina’s geworden, maar dan nog blijft het voor de Brusselse componist Kris Defoort een huzarenstuk om de deadline te halen voor de opera, die in 2020 in première gaat in De Munt, in een regie van Ivo van Hove. Temeer daar Defoort in de tussentijd niet wil inboeten aan ‘lichter’ werk. Momenteel toert hij met De mensheid, het nieuwe muziek­theaterstuk van Josse De Pauw. En volgend jaar zal hij – na het succes van An old Monk – alweer een monoloog van De Pauw begeleiden met zijn jazztrio.

Het is alweer van 2010 geleden dat hij die band lanceerde met drummer Lander Gyselinck en bassist Nicolas Thys. Hun agenda’s ogen zowaar nog voller, als uithangborden van het nieuwe elan in de Belgische jazz. En toch vonden ook zij dat extra gaatje om te investeren in een bijzonder project, dat Defoort op poten zette rond de stem van de Hongaarse zangeres Veronika Harcsa, de altsax van Guillaume Orti en de gedichten van Peter Verhelst. Inspiratie voor de naam Diving Poet Society vond hij in een fotoboek van de gerenommeerde Brazili-

aanse fotograaf Sebastião Salgado. Vooral die ene panoramische foto waarop een rij pinguïns op een ijsblok aanschuift om in zee te duiken, was hem altijd bijgebleven. Defoort: “Ik kon dat beeld door de rechten niet gebruiken voor de hoes van de plaat. Maar die duik in het onbekende, en al de risico’s die eraan verbonden zijn, het bleef een mooi beeld. Letterlijk en figuurlijk.”

KRIS DEFOORT:

“De poëzie van Peter Verhelst moet je laten doorsijpelen in je onderbewustzijn”

Heb je altijd al van poëzie gehouden?

KRIS DEFOORT: Nee, ik heb er nooit echt de tijd

voor genomen. Ik lees vooral romans. Ze helpen me in een andere wereld te stappen.

Zeker nu ik een opera aan het schrijven ben, heb ik de neiging om alles wat ik lees, zie en ervaar terug te brengen tot de personages van die opera. Dat is vrij obsessief. Je verliezen in een roman om de opera te vergeten, is enorm dankbaar, ook al ben je onderbewust natuurlijk nog steeds met je werk bezig.

Hoe ben je bij de gedichten van Peter Verhelst terechtgekomen?

DEFOORT: Zijn roman Geschiedenis van een berg vond ik fantastisch. Hij gaat over het ontstaan van de mensheid. Eigenlijk weet je niet goed of zijn personages al mens of nog dier zijn, en dat

intrigeerde me. Peters werk, dat vrij hermetisch is, moet je tot op zekere hoogte laten doorsijpelen in je onderbewustzijn. Toen ik voor Diving Poet Society korte stukken tekst voor de zangeres nodig had, moest ik meteen aan de poëzie van Peter Verhelst denken. We zijn allebei van Brugge, verstaan elkaars dialect en konden al langer goed met elkaar overweg. Hij heeft me een twintigtal gedichten bezorgd, die al vertaald waren in het Engels. Ik heb er uiteindelijk twee gedichten uitgepikt: ‘The pine tree and the marching’, dat een ecologische inslag heeft, en het liefdesgedicht ‘The pine tree and the fire’.

Diving Poet Society: Lander Gyselinck, Nicolas Thys, Kris Defoort, Veronika Harcsa en Guillaume Orti

Verspreid over drie tracks zijn die gedichten de openingscyclus van je nieuwe plaat geworden, maar je hebt ook ingegrepen in de tekst.

DEFOORT: Hier en daar heb ik een woord veranderd of een zin herhaald. Peter begreep dat het geen klassieke lezing van zijn gedichten zou zijn, maar een vrije lezing gebaseerd op improvisatie. We werken allebei erg organisch, denk ik. Vanuit wat we schrijven en meemaken kristalliseert er zich iets. Tijdens het componeren van deze plaat, waarvoor ik ook enkele oude nummers van het trio gearrangeerd heb voor sax en zang, kwam zo telkens een klein motiefje terug uit een nummer van wijlen Pierre Van Dormael, eveneens een geconcentreerd en beredeneerd persoon, die zeer poëtisch uit de hoek kon komen. Dat motiefje houdt alles samen.

Zangeres Veronika Harcsa zat, net als Lander Gyselinck, in je improvisatieklas aan het Brusselse Conservatorium, waar je ondertussen 25 jaar lesgeeft. Het lijkt een onuitputtelijke vijver van talent te zijn.

DEFOORT: Het is met Veronika precies gegaan

zoals met Lander. Ik hoorde haar even bezig en dacht: wat een talent, wat een potentieel, zowel creatief als muzikaal. In Hongarije kende men

haar vooral als popzangeres, maar in mijn klas stond ze open voor alles. Ik heb trouwens zopas beslist om Hendrik Lasure (SCHNTZL, Thunderblender) als pianist te vragen voor de opera – nog iemand uit mijn improvisatieklas.

Voor zo’n jonge gast is dat een hele uitdaging, hij zal veel moeten studeren. Net als Lander, die als lid van mijn trio eveneens in de opera zit en veel klassieke percussie zal moeten spelen.

Voor de jonge generatie is de openheid tussen stijlen en disciplines ondertussen een must.

Heeft ze zich ook doorgezet in het onderwijs?

DEFOORT: De tijden zijn veranderd. Ik had nog een directe lijn met de beboppers in de jazz: ik speelde met Jacques Pelzer en Lionel Hampton.

Maar daarnaast speelde ik veel freejazz, en later opera, klassiek en muziektheater. Ik heb de

grenzen opgezocht toen niemand het deed.

Nu doet haast iedereen dat, ook in de klassieke wereld: overdag spelen ze viool, ’s avonds luisteren ze naar Kendrick Lamar.

In de jazz valt vooral het hogere technische niveau op, maar creativiteit kan je nog altijd niet leren. Zij die het hebben, behoren tot de vijf à tien procent studenten die het verder schoppen. Maar eigenlijk is een conservatorium niet aangepast aan de eigenheid van jazz. Het wil conserveren. Daar heb ik altijd weerstand tegen geboden door open te staan. Het is natuurlijk handig als er een syllabus bestaat die zegt wat mag en wat niet mag. Maar ik zeg altijd: je moet het horen. Dan zit het juist. Duke Ellington zondigde voortdurend tegen de regels van het conservatorium, maar hij wist ook waarom.

Undeclared feminist Dana Michel faces the future

The Beursschouwburg has previously staged Canadian performer Dana Michel’s very personal work Mercurial George. It is now presenting her previous solo Yellow Towel as part of its The Future Is Feminist programme.

We spoke to Dana Michel about blond hair and black humour.

s a child, Dana Michel wrapped a yellow towel around her head in an attempt to look like the blond girls at school. In her solo performance Yellow Towel, she digs further into the inner world of the person she was back then and who she is now, but she also refuses to be anything other than herself from now on. At the origins of the work, which The New York Times called one of the most remarkable productions of 2014, was a workshop with performance artist and former Kaaitheater resident Ivo Dimchev. “The first bit of Yellow Towel originated from a workshop with him in Vienna,” explains Dana Michel.

“Six months before, I had discovered his work online, through a friend of mine who showed me a video. When I saw it I thought: ‘Hey, that is my long lost brother!’ Ivo helped me to find the inner permission to go off onto the tangent that I needed to start working.”

How did he do that?

DANA MICHEL: The most important thing was that during his workshop he

told me to use my voice for the first time. The second thing was that I witnessed his direct use of humour. Those things changed my working process completely. They also loosened the way that I use my body, and the subject matter. I used to have a very dogmatic approach to choreography. But a big part of my personality has always been my jokiness, my talking, and my way of playing with language. So when I opened my mouth for the first time onstage, it felt as though the 70 percent of myself that I had always shut out, could also be incorporated in my work.

Maybe you refrained from literally using your own voice onstage because it is a very idiosyncratic one.

MICHEL: It feels like talking to myself, yes. There is of course text and

there are things I really want to say, but it is almost as if those things become a portal to go to different places very far from and very close to me. Sometimes the words also serve as a soundscape. So the language has many uses, and what keeps the work interesting for me is that it switches all the time. It looks rigid at times, but I don’t have complete mastery over it, which keeps the work very much alive.

I wanted to make something that would allow me to be myself on stage at all moments. So if I am feeling shy and awkward, I use that as subject matter, and I don’t have to deny the fact that I am nervous and shy. It feeds the physicality and the way that I speak. Actually I am just reflecting my mental and physical state.

A bit like performing in front of the bathroom mirror.

MICHEL: Kind of. I am a very sensitive and reactive person, so if I were to

trip over a big stone walking down the street, and there would be no one else on the planet, I would probably scream and shout very loud. But we are obviously socialized in a way that makes us minimize our reaction to tripping over the stone, to keep on walking, and to erase the whole thing.

In this work, I do not erase anything. I remove the social filter.

Is that why people connect to the work? Because they witness the freedom you allow yourself on stage?

MICHEL: I think so. That is a pretty simple way of putting it.

And what about the perception of the humour. I guess some people also take the work very seriously.

MICHEL: Exactly. There are audiences that laugh, audiences that are dead

silent, and audiences with people who laugh while others give them dirty looks for laughing. And it all makes sense because I am going through these stages as well. I think that what I have made is a black humour performance. There is always comedy going on, but of course comedy can be extremely sad.

Like in your “ridiculous poem” “Yellow Towel”, one of the piece’s sources.

MICHEL: I called it a ridiculous poem because I pour words like “ridicu-

lous” over everything that I do like ketchup. It is an attempt to remove the sacredness of it. I wrote the poem during Ivo’s workshop because he wanted us to reflect on our autobiographies. I did it in ten minutes and named it after the yellow towel that I used to put on my head when I was little, to pretend I had long blond hair.

Which makes race one of the themes of the work.

MICHEL: There are different centres of interest, but one definitely was to

give myself the permission to talk about my race. I decided that I was going to make black art, although I didn’t know what that would mean or what that was going to look like.

And does the work also fit in the programme of The Future Is Feminist?

MICHEL: I am an undeclared feminist like I am undeclared in everything in

order to retain my freedom. But me and my work absolutely resonate with the feminist theme, and it is a pleasure to have the work included in the programme and thus framed in a different register.

Le livre Moshé est né de la rencontre fortuite dans une rue de Bruxelles entre la photographe Sandrine Lopez et un vieux rabbin. Leur relation, singulière, se développe autour d’un rituel hebdomadaire : celui d’un bain que la première donne au second en échange de quelques images. — SOPHIE SOUKIAS

l faut se fier à son instinct et tenter », dit Sandrine Lopez, photographe française installée à Bruxelles (diplômée du 75), talent émergent à suivre de près dont le travail a transité l’année dernière par le Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi et le Musée Dr. Ghislain à Gand. Moshé, son premier livre, dont la sortie est accompagnée d'une exposition chez Peinture Fraîche, est parti, comme c’est souvent le cas dans son travail artistique, d’une image latente : une image qui lui trottait dans la tête depuis longtemps, formée par la littérature, le cinéma

et d’autres sources d’inspiration nourrissant ses obsessions et fascinations.

L’image ? Celle d’un homme âgé, maigre et nu, allongé sur un lit. « Un soir, je marchais rue de la Glacière près de chez moi et j’ai croisé un vieil homme dans la tenue typique du rabbin : long manteau noir, chapeau, barbe blanche, ... On s’est regardés. Au début, je n’ai pas osé, je m’inventais mille excuses pour ne pas l’aborder. J’ai marché quelques pas avant de faire demi-tour. Je lui ai simplement dit la vérité : que je le trouvais beau et que j’aurais aimé

faire son portrait », explique la photographe. Flatté, Moshé accepte de l'accueillir chez lui la semaine d’après. « J’ai fait quelques portraits dans son salon, dans sa cuisine. À la fin de la séance, il m’a demandé de l’aide pour prendre son bain, tout à fait naturellement. Et là, je me suis retrouvée face à ce corps maigre, osseux, cette peau épuisée, éprouvée, fragile. J’étais fascinée devant quelque chose de sublime et de parfaitement terrifiant à la fois ».

de 89 ans. La possibilité de prendre un bain pour l’un, la possibilité de photographier ce rituel pour l’autre. « En photographie, on a toujours l’impression de prendre beaucoup plus que l’on ne donne. Ici, j’avais la chance d’avoir quelque chose à offrir en échange.

Lui, était dans une dimension presque hédoniste. Le bain est quelque chose qu'on aime tous mais les personnes âgées y ont moins accès à cause du risque d’accident. Si c’est jouable, il y a du repos, de l’abandon, quelque chose de l’ordre de la régression aussi ».

PROFONDÉMENT VIVANT Ce rendez-vous qui se répétera, chaque semaine, pendant plus de deux ans, donnera naissance au livre Moshé. Une série intime, poétique, mystérieuse et confrontante, au champ d’interprétation inépuisable. Sur la peau ridée et tachée de Moshé, c’est un parchemin sans fin qui se donne à lire. La texture granuleuse des images tantôt en noir et blanc, tantôt colorées, presque monochromes, ne fait que multiplier les couches de cette histoire universelle, celle de la vie et, inexorablement, celle de la mort. Celui qui s’appelle Moshé et dont le corps a traversé la noirceur du vingtième siècle, appartient-il seulement aux vivants ou a-t-il depuis longtemps déjà rejoint les survivants ?

« J’étais fascinée devant quelque chose de sublime et de parfaitement terrifiant à la fois »

en papier japonais translucide, une série d'écrits du vieux rabbin. Des cours destinés à être dispensés à la synagogue, la préparation de la gravure de la pierre tombale de son épouse, des souvenirs aussi. Une écriture intense, énergique et continue, certes tremblante, envahit l’espace de chaque feuille. « Je voulais parler de ce que ce corps abritait de spiritualité », explique Sandrine Lopez. « Je pense que cette activité très vive autour de la foi et de la transmission du savoir rend Moshé profondément vivant. Son épouse, que j’allais voir avec lui à l’hôpital et que j'ai également photographiée, symbolise le corps vidé de la spiritualité qui maintient en vie ».

Plus qu’un corps ridé, plus qu'un vieux rabbin, Moshé incarne la complexité humaine dans ce qu’elle a de plus fascinant, de plus troublant. « Bien qu’il soit pratiquant, orthodoxe, il y a chez Moshé une force du rapport à soi qui se situe au-delà des restric-

tions. Il n’avait aucune raison ‘acceptable’ de se laisser photographier : je suis une femme, je ne suis pas juive, je pouvais être impure quand je lui donnais le bain. Tout ça est quelque peu ‘diabolique’. Il n’est pas dans le déni mais il refuse de sacrifier ce moment unique qu’est le bain, même au nom de ce à quoi on devrait tout sacrifier ».

Quand on observe, page après page, le corps fragile de Moshé s’enfoncer dans le liquide chaud de sa baignoire, on ne peut s'empêcher de se demander s’il va en ressortir ou s’il va disparaître, à jamais, sous le bain bulle, pour rejoindre quelque chose d’infini-

ment plus grand, ce quelque chose qui l’a vu naître. Son corps et son visage, apaisé, semblent nous indiquer qu’il est prêt. « Moshé est extrêmement tranquille avec la mort, il se dit que ce n’est pas lui qui décide. Sa foi, son rapport décomplexé à son corps, m’ont sans doute facilité la tâche, m’éloignant du pathétisme que je cherchais absolument à éviter. Je peux comprendre que mon travail puisse mettre mal à l’aise ou choquer mais je ne pense pas qu’il soit pour autant morbide. La morbidité est un rapport maladif à la mort. Moshé a plutôt été cathartique. J’aime le cru et le brut, pas le cruel et le brutal ».

elf verdwaalt hij zowat overal, maar dat weerhoudt Gertjan Van Hellemont er niet van om de wereld te verkennen. Het is de opzichtige oranje trolley – “van mijn vriendin!” – die hem bij onze ontmoeting in het Noord­ station verraadt als het muzikale uithangbord van een rusteloze generatie op zoek naar gemoedsrust in de grootstad. De trolley herbergt onder andere de Casio SK-1, die morgen mee moet naar Barcelona, waar hij zal spelen op Indies Keeping Secrets. Eerder reisde Van Hellemont met datzelfde elektrische pianootje al naar Montreal, waar hij vorige herfst een aantal weken doorbracht. “Ik heb er ‘Undercover Lovers’ op geschreven,” vertelt hij. Die melancholische single gaf als prelude van de nieuwe plaat meteen aan dat de zanger het pure singer-songwritergeluid achter zich heeft gelaten. “Na een concert in de Barfly, een van de lokale bars, werd ik wakker met dat liedje in mijn hoofd. Ik ben uit bed gerold en heb er de hele dag aan gewerkt. ’s Avonds was het klaar, zonder dat ik mijn gitaar aangeraakt had.”

Tegen de pendelaarsstroom in banen we ons een weg richting Noordwijk. “Toen ik vroeger met de bus naar Brussel kwam, was dit mijn eindhalte,” herinnert de zanger zich zijn trips vanuit Meise, waar hij zijn jeugd doorbracht, of Kapelle-opden-Bos, waar hij schoolliep. “Meestal kwam ik hier om cd’s te kopen in de Fnac,” klinkt het. “Maar omdat ik later in Gent ben gaan studeren, ken ik Brussel eigenlijk niet zo goed. Eén keer ben ik er met mijn vriendin op citytrip geweest, in plaats van naar Londen of Berlijn.” (Lacht) Anderzijds: de anonimiteit van de grootstad ligt Van Hellemont wel. In Montreal was hij ooit al enkele dagen geweest, maar vorig jaar wilde hij er een tijdje echt gaan wonen, in zijn eentje. “Dat had ik onderschat, want de eerste dagen kreeg ik last van heimwee.”

Uiteindelijk heeft Montreal hem wel de energie en de mentale afstand gegeven die nodig waren om aan een nieuw muzikaal hoofdstuk te beginnen. “Het fijne aan zulke steden is dat ze veel groener zijn dan Europese. Omdat ze maximaal

tweehonderd jaar geleden gebouwd zijn, is er genoeg plaats voorzien voor bomen.”

Wandelend door het Gaucheretpark snappen we wat hij bedoelt. De plek bewijst haar nut als sociale ruimte voor de omringende appartementsblokken, maar je ziet meer beton dan bomen. Voor een muzikant die een spar (die veel zuurstof nodig heeft om te groeien) als artiestennaam uitkoos en ook in Montreal dagelijks een park opzocht, mist het de weidsheid die hij graag in zijn muziek opzoekt. Van Hellemont vindt Brussel maar een lilliputterversie van New York. Hetzelfde gevoel bekruipt hem als we wat later in de tuinen van de Botanique staan. “In België slagen we er niet in om bomen echt volwassen te laten worden. In vergelijking met die in Noord-Amerikaanse steden zien ze er maar zielig uit – en de gebouwen eigenlijk ook. Een Douglas-spar kan 80 à 100 meter hoog worden. In Europa lukt dat niet. In Amerika wel, al helpt het dat er zich vlak naast de oceaan een gebergte bevindt en er dus veel water in de lucht hangt.”

LANGE AFSTANDEN Een van de herfstige foto’s die hij in het grootstedelijke Canadese groen genomen heeft, meer bepaald in Parc Jarry, prijkt nu op de hoes van Hinges of luck. Zo maakt hij de luisteraar getuige van zijn inspirerende ‘werkomgeving’. “Lezend in een boek op een bankje in zo’n park kreeg ik vaak een idee voor een nieuw nummer, waarna ik me naar mijn appartement haastte.” Omdat het voor gedurige twintigers moeilijk kiezen is, verbleef Van Hellemont op verschillende plekken in Montreal: “Eerst in de buurt van McGill University en de Saint Laurent Boulevard, waar ik concertjes speelde in lokale bars,

bagels at en parkjes opzocht. Later vlak bij de Mont Royal, waar ik graag elke ochtend naar boven wandelde om naar de stad te kijken. En ten slotte in Little Italy.” Daar zag hij de boom die naast zijn raam stond elke dag een beetje van kleur veranderen.

Je zou het als een metafoor kunnen beschouwen voor de melancholie waarin Van Hellemont zijn muziek onderdompelt, ondanks het elektronische palet dat hij uitdokterde met de hulp van Senne Guns. Hun boon voor de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne – en meer bepaald het album Ouroboros – bracht Douglas Firs in de studio van Kevin Ratterman in het Amerikaanse Louisville, waar ook My Morning Jacket opneemt. “Het basketbalpleintje dat we net passeerden, doet me eraan denken. Zo lag er ook eentje naast de studio. Het verschil is dat die Amerikanen de bal ook bijna elke keer ín de korf gooiden.” Van Hellemont deed in Montreal de eerste dagen alles te voet, maar al snel besloot hij zich een tweedehandsfiets aan te schaffen. “Ik zat er niet mee in om tien kilometer af te leggen om ergens te raken.

Het is jammer dat ik mijn fiets achteraf niet kon meenemen naar huis. Ze was niet eens zo duur. Ik had gewoon een hand te weinig.”

Wanneer we via de kleurrijke maar rumoerige Brabantstraat het grond­gebied van Schaarbeek verlaten hebben en vanuit de tuinen van de Botanique de avondspits op de Kleine Ring bespieden, lijkt zo’n rustgevende fietservaring hier veraf. De aanwezigheid van een concertzaal en een platenwinkel bieden gelukkig soelaas. Aan de deur van Balades Sonores hangt een poster van The War on Drugs, de Amerikaanse band waarvoor Van Hellemont – een fan – straks de aftershow mag verzorgen in Amsterdam. Binnen ligt vooral vinyl. De zanger blijft even staan bij de jongste van John Grant, een van zijn voorbeelden qua stijlvol synthgebruik. “Ik ben waarschijnlijk een van de laatsten die de cd nog niet heeft opgegeven. Nu veel mensen hun collectie haast gratis wegdoen, is dit een interessante periode voor een cd-fanaat. Als de cd zoals de vinylplaat dan toch niet verdwijnt, heb je ze toch maar mooi allemaal.” (Lacht)

ostalgisch naar de films die uw jeugd gekleurd hebben? Back to the future, Toto le héros of Hugo och Josefin (een poëtische ode aan de kindertijd zoals alleen de Zweden ze verzinnen)? Filem’On maakt op twee manieren korte metten met dat soms misplaatste gevoel.

Enerzijds kiest het internationale filmfestival voor jong publiek dit jaar als rode draad het reizen doorheen de tijd. Bovengenoemde klassiekers behoren tot het gevarieerde en rijke aanbod. Neem uw eigen kinderen of die van een ander mee, en u kunt nagaan of die films zo goed zijn als u zich herinnert, en de nieuwe generatie tegelijk meegeven dat een film van twintig of vijftig jaar geleden, net als een boek of muziekalbum van twintig of vijftig jaar geleden, heel wat te bieden heeft. Anderzijds geneest de elfde editie u ook van onnozele vroeger-­was-hetbetergedachten, door tientallen hedendaagse jeugdfilms voor te stellen. Op de affiche staan meer dan 130 films, in alle genres en formaten, voor een publiek van 2 tot 16 jaar.

Wij geven alvast drie potentiële smaakmakers mee. Roald Dahls heerlijk ondeugende sprookjesboek Gruwelijke rijmen is omgezet in animatie door Jakob Schuh, de regisseur die met De gruffalo veel jonge kinderen blij heeft gemaakt.

De hoog aan­geschreven Fatih Akin

(Gegen die Wand, Auf der anderen Seite) waagde zich met Tschick aan een volbloed jeugdfilm. Daarin trekken twee tienerjongens uit een heel verschillend milieu de wijde wereld in met een ‘geleende’ rammelwagen en beleven het avontuur van hun leven. De hartverwarmende documentaire Jeffrey portretteert dan weer een zelfverzekerde straatjongen die autoruiten wast voor de kost en graag een echte reggaetonzanger zou worden. Met een beetje geluk zien de volwassenen van morgen tijdens Filem’On de films waar ze overmorgen nostalgisch naar kunnen zijn.

Nostalgique des films de votre enfance ? Filem’On coupe court à ce sentiment occasionnel déplacé. D’abord, parce que le festival du film pour enfants a choisi cette année pour leitmotiv les voyages temporels.

L’occasion de vérifier si Back to the Future et Toto le héros sont aussi excellents que dans vos souvenirs. Ensuite, cette onzième édition propose des dizaines de films récents, comme la version animée de Revolting Rhymes de Roald Dahl et Tschick, un pur film pour enfants du réalisateur de Gegen die Wand, Fatih Akin. Avec un peu de chance, les adultes de demain verront à Filem’On les films qui les rendront un jour nostalgiques.

Vous connaissez Louis et Auguste Lumière comme les frères lyonnais qui ont inventé le cinéma en 1895 et vous avez sans doute déjà vu deux, trois de leurs films : La Sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon (le premier film, sujet à plusieurs remakes), L’Arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat (qui a valu aux premiers spectateurs de prendre leurs jambes à leur cou) et L'Arroseur arrosé (la première comédie). Mais saviez-vous qu’ils avaient tourné, ou produit, plusieurs centaines de films de cinquante secondes ? Et saviez-vous que l’on dénombre de nombreuses perles dans le lot qui détiennent une valeur historique mais aussi artistique ? Je n’étais pas au courant, contrairement à Thierry Frémaux. Le directeur du Festival de Cannes est aussi à la tête de l’Institut Lumière qui veille sur le patrimoine des pionniers du cinéma. Son long-métrage rassemble une bonne centaine de films magnifiques restaurés qui prouvent que les inventeurs furent aussi les premiers artistes de la discipline. Les films sont regroupés par thème (Lyon, les enfants, Paris, les comédies, le travail, les loisirs, …) et accompagnés d’un commentaire enthousiasmant et didactique. On y apprend que cet art nouveau a pris un envol merveilleux. La compilation aurait tout aussi bien pu s’appeler Lumière ! L’art commence ou Lumière ! La féerie commence. (NR)

La commémoration du centenaire de la Grande Guerre est en cours depuis un moment. Même si l’ambitieux et, par moments, impressionnant film français Au revoir là-haut plonge dans l’enfer de la Première Guerre mondiale, il sert surtout une histoire picaresque et entraînante racontant une amitié mouvementée entre deux vétérans démunis (un petit comptable et un dessinateur privé de sa mâchoire inférieure) qui tentent de trouver leur place dans la société au lendemain d’un conflit dévastateur. Maillard (Albert Dupontel) et son camarade Péricourt (Nahuel Perez Biscayart, révélé dans 120 battements par minute) montent une arnaque autour des monuments aux morts. Rien de surprenant puisque ce film tragicomique est une adaptation du best-seller cynique couronné du Prix Goncourt en 2013 de l’écrivain de polars Pierre Lemaitre.

Pas de place pour le patriotisme pompeux et l’héroïsme triomphant dans cette épopée de grande envergure qui s’attaque à l’hypocrisie et à l’opportunisme aveugle de la classe dirigeante. Ici, c’est la créativité artistique qui est vénérée. Qu’il nous emmène dans les tranchées ou dans les chics salons parisiens, l’ancien comédien et réalisateur Albert Dupontel fait montre de soin, de style et aussi, parfois, d’une désinvolture étonnante. En résumé: le savoir-faire à la française. (LJ)

De kans is groot dat u twee, drie films gezien hebt van cinemapioniers Louis en Auguste Lumière. Maar wist u dat ze honderden films van vijftig seconden gedraaid hebben, en dat daar historische en artistieke pareltjes tussen zitten? Thierry Frémaux, directeur van het Festival van Cannes en baas van het Institut Lumière, stelde een langspeelfilm samen met ruim honderd gerestaureerde films. Je wrijft meermaals de ogen uit en stelt vast dat de nieuwe kunst een vliegende start nam.

De herdenking van de Grote Oorlog is al een tijdje aan de gang. Ook de ambitieuze en soms imponerende Franse film Au revoir là-haut duikt in de hel van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, al serveert hij vooral een picaresk, energiek verteld verhaal over een bewogen vriendschap tussen twee straatarme oorlogsveteranen (een kleine boekhouder en een tekenaar met een weggeblazen kaak) die hun plaats proberen te vinden in de nasleep van dat gruwelijke conflict.

Commemorations of the Great War have been continuing throughout the year. The ambitious and occasionally impressive French film Au revoir là-haut also explores the hell of the First World War, but it primarily focuses on the picturesque, energetically told story of an eventful friendship between two dirt poor war veterans (an accountant and an illustrator whose face is half blown off) who try to find their place in the aftermath of the horrific conflict.

Inside Indonesia As part of Europalia Indonesia, the exhibition “Power & Other Things” is exploring the past two turbulent centuries of Indonesian history, in order to enhance our understanding of the diversity on the biggest island archipelago in the world. — SARA DE SLOOVER

ndonesia, which is the fourth largest country in the world by population, is almost completely unknown in Europe. At most we know that the archipelago is the country of Bali and batik, but that is about it. For this reason alone, the new exhibition “Power & Other Things” at Bozar is worth a visit.

According to Europalia, it offers a taster “of what Indonesia could be if it learned to exploit its potential”.

One example is the painter Jan Toorop, who is known exclusively as a Dutch painter in the artistic canon.

Here he is presented as a Dutch-Indonesian artist who was of mixed heritage and grew up on Java.

Self-portraits show the young Toorop in his studio dressed in Indonesian clothes. “Indonesia can never be separated from me,” the painter said, who spent the rest of his life incorporating batik patterns in his own version of art nouveau.

Through works by Toorop and twenty other Indonesian and Western artists, the exhibition attempts “to come to terms with the crimes of 450 years of colonialism.”

This political perspective is a central leitmotif throughout the exhibition, which jumps back and forth through time and space, and makes underlying connections.

Another example is Raden Saleh (1811-1880). He was the first Indonesian painter who was trained as an artist in the Netherlands. After

twenty-three years in Europe, Saleh returned home, where he painted The Arrest of Diponegoro. The painting depicts the surrender of the Javanese prince and freedom fighter Diponegoro to the Dutch. “Power & Other Things” has intentionally placed the work beside the painting The Submission by his Dutch contemporary Nicolaas Pieneman.

The theme of the canvasses is the same, but the titles betray the profoundly different perspectives on these events.

“Power & Other Things” consistently contrasts the perspectives of the powerful and the subjugated, and shows how these different views affected the course of history. For example, a contemporary collective of scientists and artists juxtaposes a replica of the symbol of power of the Indonesian Batak people, which was stolen by a Dutchman at the end of the nineteenth century, with the oral transmission of the contemporary Batak about their ancestors who fought for it. The emblem of power ended up in the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) in Antwerp, and the Batak abandoned their struggle against the colonists.

You see a dizzying cross-section of the enormous diversity on the archipelago, and how events from the present and past – in incredibly current themes like Islamization, racism, or the role of women – are intimately entwined.

Steak met gezond verstand

lees: wat een moeilijke kwestie.

Moeilijk voor wie ermee werkt, moeilijk voor wie het consumeert. We hebben er lang zonder zorgen op gekauwd, maar die tijd is al even voorbij.

Vervuiling, dierenleed, kwaliteits­problemen: we kunnen er niet langer de ogen voor sluiten. Voor vleesliefhebbers lijkt de redelijkste oplossing te schuilen in minder vlees eten en altijd voor kwaliteit kiezen – van slagers die zelf kweken, bijvoorbeeld. Maar uiteraard mag je portefeuille niet al te mager zijn om zulke stukjes te kunnen betalen, en dan hebben we het niet eens over de restaurants die surfen op de hype rond dry-aged of gerijpt vlees, en waar je makkelijk 50 tot 60 euro betaalt voor een côte à l’os.

In Elsene is zopas een nieuw adres open­ gegaan dat een interessant compromis tussen kwaliteit en prijs biedt. Opgepast: daarom willen we er nog niet meerdere keren per week naartoe. Het toegankelijke karakter van de plek mag ons niet weerhouden van een zeker ideaal van matiging. Het scenario van La Meute? Een stedelijk eetcafé, gedecoreerd met witte tegels en zwart geschilderde baksteen, waar je 20 euro betaalt voor de formule steak-saus van het huis-frieten-koolsla. We vinden het heerlijk dat het (niet-gerijpte) vlees kwaliteit en smaak toont – Wexford-rund, ingevoerd uit Ierland en gekweekt in België. Goed gezien, die dubbele oorsprong: een minimale (maar uiteraard niet onbestaande) ecologische impact en een erg

intense smaak, dankzij de Ierse oorsprong van het vlees, waarvan de kweek altijd al georiënteerd was op ‘roken’ eerder dan op ‘sudderen’, zoals in continentaal Europa.

Voeg daar nog heerlijk krokante frietjes, kraakverse koolsla en een homemade mayonaise aan toe. En omdat geluk nooit alleen komt: de ontvangst is erg spontaan, het dessert uitmuntend – een chocolade-speculaastaart (€5) – en de selectie wijnen is even bondig als efficiënt: Domaine Roche-Audran (€29,70), Les Creisses van Philippe Chesnelong (€36,50) of Unlitro van Ampeleia (€34).

Mâcher de la viande sans se soucier de rien, c’est bel et bien fini : pollution, souffrance animale, qualité du produit… À Ixelles, une nouvelle adresse vient d’ouvrir qui propose un intéressant compromis entre qualité et prix.

Le scénario de La Meute ? Une cantine urbaine où la formule steak-sauce maison-frites-coleslaw s’affiche à 20 €. La viande, non maturée, affiche qualité et goût – du Wexford venu d’Irlande et élevé en Belgique. Cette double origine est bien vue: l’impact écologique est moindre et la saveur garantie. L’accueil est d’une grande spontanéité, le dessert excellent – un gâteau chocolat-spéculoos (5 €) - et la sélection de vins aussi courte qu’efficace.

In Elsene/Ixelles, a new place has just opened that offers a tempting compromise between quality and price. Steak with homemade sauce, deliciously crunchy chips, and fresh coleslaw costs €20. The meat, good quality non-matured Irish Wexford beef, raised in Belgium to minimise the ecological impact, is full of flavour. The service is speedy, the desserts are excellent, and the wine list is short but sweet: Domaine Roche-Audran (€29.70), Les Creisses by Philippe Chesnelong (€36.50), and Unlitro from Ampeleia (€34).

What is the message of this opera by the only sixteen-year-old Mozart? Homo homini lupus, or, in translation: man is wolf to man? That could be, but it is typical of the dramaturgy of almost all of Mozart’s operas that their characters have multilayered personalities. In short: nobody is black or white. Lucio Silla is a Roman dictator who has eliminated all opposition. Now that his hands are untied, his attention has turned to the beautiful Giunia. Director Tobias Kratzer has transposed the story’s setting from ancient Rome to a super-secured, luxurious gated community today. The main characters are money, power, and lust.

Les cumbia-rockeurs bruxellois La Chiva Gantiva sont de retour avec leur troisième opus Despegue sur lequel ils poursuivent leur démarche cumbia/rock/ funk en s’ouvrant à l’électro et au hip-hop.

On note même un petit retour vers leurs racines afro-colombiennes sur le premier vidéoclip El Ritmo Lo Llevo Yo. La collaboration avec le rappeur américain Speech de Arrested Development sur le second clip Cuero est une autre belle surprise. La Chiva a le vent en poupe au niveau international avec des tournées dans l’Europe entière, au Canada, en Colombie voire même en Asie.

Ce nouvel album devrait consolider leur position de numéro 1 de la scène latino belge. La noche sera caliente au Bota !

De officiële opening van Werkplaats Walter (een initiatief van Teun Verbruggen) is pas voorzien in 2018, maar intussen zijn de meeste ruimtes ingenomen door kunstenaarsateliers en vinden er met de regelmaat van de klok al concertavonden en vernissages plaats op de charmante dakzolder. Zaterdag is het vooral uitkijken naar het geweldige Thunderblender, dat zijn debuut-ep Last minute panic voorstelt.

Aangevuurd door Hendrik Lasure op piano en Jens Bouttery op drums en synth orkestreert de Ierse saxofonist Sam Comerford de chaos. Driftig, soms ook lyrisch. Geen basgitaar, wel veel grenzeloze improvisaties.

In 1966, Bobby Fuller had a big hit with “I Fought the Law”. In the same year, the singer was found dead in his car in mysterious and still unexplained circumstances.

Half a century later, this event has inspired Chuck Prophet to write Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins. The opening and title track of his latest CD is typical of the Californian guitarist and songwriter, who after performing with the country rock institution Green on Red has always made it a point of honour to envelop his wit and social engagement in florid roots rock tunes. The same is true of “Jesus Was a Social Drinker” and “Alex Nieto”, a powerful tribute to a pacifist security guard who was shot by the police 59 times.

Vijftien jaar nadat de ‘magiër van Oostende’ Raoul Servais voor Harpya de Gouden Palm voor de beste kortfilm kreeg toegeschoven op het filmfestival van Cannes, ging in 1994 zijn eerste langspeler Taxandria in première op het filmfestival van Gent. De film, waar François Schuiten het geanimeerde grafische universum voor ontwikkelde waarbinnen acteurs van vlees en bloed ronddoolden, duikt in de postapocalyptische wereld Taxandria, waaruit alle techniek en tijd is verbannen. Servais’ poëtische, surrealistische ode aan de vrijheid hangt de komende weken aan de muren van Huberty & Breyne Gallery.

Jean-François d’Or a conçu la dernière grande exposition de la Maison des Arts avant travaux autour d’une matière et de son expression. Le designer a mis en scène les propositions des artistes et designers invités parmi lesquels Francis Alÿs et Roeland Tweelinckx. La matière, c’est l’argile qui peut se montrer malléable ou dur, fragile et cassant. Une terre qui peut se métamorphoser en brique, faïence ou carrelage. Dans cette exposition cohabitent plasticiens, designers, écrivains, photographes ou céramistes, comme se côtoient les objets, installations signées par des artistes et des objets en terre cuite amenés par les riverains.

We first encountered Ian Dykmans’s photos at the exhibition “Bonom, le singe boiteux” at ISELP. In addition to work by the legendary Brussels-based graffiti artist Bonom – or Vincent Glowinski as he’s known on his passport – the exhibition also featured a series of masterful photos that Ian Dykmans took of his friend’s daredevil exploits. At PointCulture ULB Ixelles, the photographer who swears by weathered paper and lith developer is presenting his new exhibition “Antropomorphisme”. In his own words: “The more the visibility of the image recedes, the more difficult it is to interpret and the more spirited it becomes.”
