future of R&B and rap sounds like, you should pitch your tent at the Beursschouwburg. Over the past few months, we saw Abra and Princess Nokia emerge from the underground there. This week, it is the Canadian visual artist and rapper of Indian and Scandinavian heritage Tommy Genesis’s turn. These independent “tomboys” all have in common that they juggle raw, intoxicating electronica with numbed beats. And they don’t mince words. De Portugese woonde een tijd in Brussel en is zelf een even grote mix van stijlen: fado en flamenco mengt ze met blues en zijn Griekse variant, de rebetika, in warme weemoed gegoten door haar in de Portugese zon getaande stem en percussieve gitaarspel. Op haar derde album Archivo pittoresco diept ze liedjes op uit Chili, Brazilië, Griekenland, de middeleeuwen én The twilight zone.

Is it OK to laugh at the left?

W

here are the punks when you need them? Sex Pistols? The Clash? Bad Brains? Yes yes, Green Day is coming to the concrete highlands of Vorst/Forest this week, but you can hardly call that circus act punk anymore. It’s true that on their last album, Revolution Radio, these blow-dried, sun-tanned Californians hold their not-so-great-anymore homeland up to the light with the ardour of their early years, but having a few too many millions on your bank account makes you just a touch less credible. Poor Billie Joe Armstrong.

Who else is going to save the world? Arcade Fire? Gorillaz?

Father John Misty? It’s the Great Sage Brian Eno. You can hardly call him a punk, but still: “There was a revolution brewing and we didn’t spot it because we didn’t make it. We expected we were going to be the revolution,” the venerable musical genius said about the election of President Trump and other Brexits. It is a good point, to see the Ass Mouth as the culmination of a downward spiral that has been going on too long and which must be reversed right now. The only problem is that Eno’s elevator and airport muzak makes us want to meditate rather than protest.

In these days when every whisper that is even remotely left-wing is dismissed as the kind of hippie naivety that helped to screw up the world, we’ll take Future of the Left, a Welsh rabble that presents its punk white-hot and seething. Indignation personified Andy “Falco” Falkous does it with just the right amount of rage, absurdity and barbed irony.

“How many farmers’ markets does it take to change a lightbulb?

(And will it reflect us?)” he wonders with a straight face on the recent The Peace & Truce of Future of the Left. Guitars in Shellac mode, the voice between the deadpan venom of Mark E. Smith from the Fall and the bone-dry humour of his hero Bill Hicks. It’s OK to laugh at the left, sometimes.

Brutus The shape of punk to come

Bassist Peter Mulders leerde drumster Stefanie Mannaerts kennen in 2011, toen hij voor zijn tributegroep van de Zweedse hardcoreband Refused iemand zocht die ook de meer complexe stukken aankon. “Ze kwam het repetitiehok binnen, legde haar papieren op de grond, tikte af en speelde een voor een en zonder fout al de nummers uit hun album The shape of punk to come. Dat vond ik redelijk indrukwekkend voor een 21-jarig meisje. De meeste drummers zouden dat album niet eens durven coveren.”

Maar Stefanie sloopte het heilige huisje en legde zo ook het fundament voor de intense sound van wat later Brutus zou worden.

Mannaerts heeft een streepje voor op veel collega’s uit de luidere scene, omdat ze een uitgebreide theoretische basis heeft en al haar partijen kan uitschrijven, het gevolg van vele uren oldskool pianolessen aan de muziekschool en muziektheorie aan de Brusselse kunsthumaniora. “Ik ben echt gedrild,” zegt ze, en dat kwam van pas toen ze op haar veertiende begon te drummen. Tegenwoordig is Chopin de enige klassieke pianist waar ze naar luistert en die ze soms nog speelt.

“Maar ik denk daarom nog niet aan zijn progressies als we muziek aan het maken zijn.

In een eerste fase zal ik een nummer van Brutus nooit theoretisch benaderen. Het moet emotie blijven.”

110 concerten zal Brutus op de teller hebben staan bij de release van zijn eerste album. “Als je speelt voor een publiek, komt er een energie vrij die je niet kan simuleren tijdens repetities of soundchecks,” zegt Peter Mulders.

“Dan mag de emotie het overnemen van je technische bagage. Als Stefanie live een keer door haar stem schiet of te snel gaat drummen, dan vinden we dat net interessant. Er zijn al te veel bands die live hetzelfde klinken als op plaat. Neem Oscar and The Wolf. Die spelen zo op de click, met exact dezelfde geluidjes als in de studio.

Dat haalt alle leven er toch uit? Zo mag Brutus niet worden.”

Voor de opnames van zijn debuut trok Brutus naar de studio van Jesse Gander, een indieproducer uit Vancouver. “Hij reageerde snel en ludiek op onze mail, vroeg geen zotte prijzen en zijn productie voor White Lung, ook een trio met een vrouwelijke vocaliste, vonden we erg goed, omdat hij perfect wist te capteren hoe die band echt is,” legt Mulders uit. “Een bijkomend voordeel was dat we drie weken op een andere klok konden leven. Zo konden we ons met z’n drieën focussen op de zoektocht naar de ideale Brutus-klank, terwijl onze lieven en kameraden aan het slapen waren.”

Afgezonderd opgenomen

Burst In lijn met de filosofie van het trio uit Leuven werd de basis van Burst live ingespeeld. “We klinken veel natuurlijker als we onze drumster kunnen volgen,” legt Mulders uit. “De grootste aanpassing in de studio was dat Stefanie haar drumpartijen en zanglijnen niet langer combineerde.” Zo kon ze zichzelf niet alleen beter horen. “Ik klink ook beheerster,” zegt ze, “en ik besefte ik dat ik niet altijd hard hoef te roepen of te duwen op mijn stem.” De teksten, waarvoor ze de credits deelt met gitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden, ontstaan vrijwel altijd na de melodie.

Haar klassieke opleiding én voorliefde voor black metal zijn daar wellicht niet vreemd aan. “Postrock met blast beats onder,” noemt ze het genre. “Perfect op piano te spelen.” Opvallend is dat haar muziekvoorkeur voor black metal en trash contrasteert met die van de andere bandleden, die ook vallen voor r&b, math rock en Springsteen. Hun meeslepende, atmosferische groepsgeluid – check de vinnige single ‘All along’ en het geweldige ‘Justice de Julia II’ – kleurt dan ook buiten de lijntjes en dat slaat aan, want na enkele releaseconcerten volgen een Europese en Belgische clubtournee.

“Na onze show op Eurosonic liepen er meteen vier festivalaanbiedingen binnen,” geeft Mulders aan dat deze luide trip nog even blijft voortduren.

believe that art is capable of constructing a shared identity for the future,” asserts Mohamed Ikoubaân, director of the Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre, which recently set up shop in Brussels after fifteen years of loyal service to Antwerp. Established early in the new millennium to promote Moroccan culture and art, Moussem (a term that refers to major festivities connected with harvest time and with religious celebrations in the Maghreb) has gradually expanded its mission to take in the whole Arab world.

“We could have put a lot of effort into establishing an Arab cultural centre or an institute of the Arab world, but for us it was important to see this art flourish within existing cultural and artistic institutions,” Ikoubaân says. The nomadic centre’s move to Brussels is good news, as it means that the Moussem Cities festival, celebrating the contemporary artistic scene of a city of the Arab world, will take place in the capital in future. Following Tunis in 2016, the spotlight is now turned on Beirut, offering a unique opportunity to see work by a number of committed artists over two weeks – we met up with four of them, see pages 10 and 11 – whose installations, performances, plays, dance, novels, and new music tell us about today’s Beirut, without any taboos and with no punches pulled.

Did Brussels need a festival like this one?

Mohamed Ikoubaân: Even though there are lots of things going on already in Brussels in terms of cultural diversity, I think that our nomadic approach, over and above the actual programming, can succeed in making cultural institutions reflect on what stories, which canons, and what kind of artistic scene they want to focus on in a city where 60% of the inhabitants come from elsewhere. We cannot continue to present only the great classics of the European repertoire and pretend that there is a homogeneous Western culture without taking into account the additional communities that have arrived here. We need to create a shared identity and art can help us do that.

Moussem Cities is, above all, an ode to the city?

Ikoubaân: In choosing the theme of the city, we wanted to take on orientalism and

a number of exotic prejudices that give an outdated picture of the Arab world.

The Arab cities, too, are contemporary and modern. The city has always been a laboratory, a cradle of creativity. So our approach has been to make the cultures of the Arab world known through its cities and to make a city known through its artists.

Beirut is well known for its flourishing contemporary arts scene. Was it an obvious choice?

Ikoubaân: Beirut has become a major centre for experimentation in contemporary arts. Despite the complete lack of support from the government, the Lebanese arts scene is in a ferment that transcends the country’s boundaries. Of necessity, artists are going to draw their inspiration from the sad past and complex reality of the history of Lebanon and the region around it.

The artists you have programmed, for the most part, have a message to convey.

Ikoubaân: Yes, and that’s not unique to Beirut. In our programming, we will tend to focus on artists who have something to say about the city and about society in general. Lucien Bourjeily, Hanane Hajj Ali, and Hatem el-Imam are progressive, committed artists who have had to struggle with censorship.

What about funding?

Ikoubaân: Contemporary artists are independent, because there is no political support at all. Financial assistance mainly comes from private sources, especially from foreign institutions such as the Alliance Française or the Ford Foundation, which have a strong presence all over the Arab world. That colonial heritage raises other issues.

Lebanon is known for its political and religious divisions. We sense that there is a will on the part of artists to transcend that fragmentation.

Ikoubaân: Yes, that’s true. I believe that it’s the role of the artist to look beyond the sectarian divisions of the Lebanese system. To take a position while throwing light on the problem, rather than standing up for a community. The victims of a war are all victims, whatever their religion, and that humanism finds expression in art, thankfully.

Hanane Hajj Ali is an actress, a stage director, and a writer, well known for her work for cultural and artistic development in Lebanon.

Rayess Bek became a key figure of urban music in the Arab world. When the Arab revolutions took place, he abandoned hip hop and turned to electro. Randa Mirza is a visual artist whose work has won a number of international prizes.

Hanane Hajj Ali, an actress whose career began over 30 years ago, has decided she is never going to give in to censorship again. Her latest work, Jogging, was given a preview performance in a Beirut auditorium last October, illegally, at a gathering held in support of freedom of expression. “As artists, we are much less free than before. When the civil war [1975– 1990 – SOS] was at its height, a censorship law was enacted to prevent the stirring up of sectarian conflict. Today, that law is illegal.” Hanane Hajj Ali believes she has the right to talk about anything and especially about subjects that annoy people. Sex, religion, politics: nothing is immune. As an actress, she deliberately sets out to break the taboos of Lebanese society. Hanane Hajj Ali has no qualms, either, about talking about herself, even in relation to the most intimate matters.

“In Jogging, it’s the artist, the mother, and the citizen who speaks. When I go for my daily jog, I rediscover my city in constant mutation, always being destroyed and rebuilt, while at the same time I rediscover myself, my dreams of playing Medea, for example.” Pursuing those thoughts, Hanane Hajj Ali wonders about today’s Medeas, women who have deliberately killed their children. Apart from artistic dreams, there are also erotic dreams. It is impossible to pigeonhole Hanane Hajj Ali when you see her onstage, wearing the veil and turning somersaults as she talks about her sexual fantasies. “I hope that the Brussels audience will see an aspect of the eastern woman, the woman actress, and the veiled woman, that it has never known. I hope to give it food for thought. I choose to wear the veil because I think it is beautiful. To me, it has nothing to do with a religious obligation.”

Love and Revenge was to be the last film featuring Asmahan, an iconic figure of Arab popular song and the star of Egyptian musical comedy in the 1940s, admired and envied for her sublime beauty and her melancholy eyes (see the cover of this magazine). On 14 July 1944, the car she was in sank to the bottom of the Nile. Her highly suspicious death remains a mystery to this day. Taking the emblematic figure of Asmahan as their starting point, the singer and composer Rayess Bek and the visual artist Randa Mira have adapted the Arab musical comedies of the last century to modern tastes as they pay tribute to the men and women who made Middle Eastern music famous all over the world: Fairouz, Oum Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Sabah, and others. “It was truly great music: from an artistic point of view, it was wonderful,” explains Rayess Bek. “Sure, there is some nostalgia behind Love and Revenge, but that wasn’t our primary motivation. Over and beyond the idea of a lost golden age, we wanted to look into what has happened since then. We wanted the audience to discover or rediscover those artists.” While Bek remixes old hits from the 1950s to the 1980s, adding electro beats, Randa Mirza remixes extracts from musical comedies. The duo is accompanied by two live musicians playing traditional instruments. “The result is very pop and also makes you want to get up and dance.” Love and Revenge is also a tribute to a certain image of the women of the Arab world. “Many of those singers and actresses expressed themselves very freely. There is something about them that is really magnificent and very glamorous. They symbolise an Arab world that we don’t know any more and that, sadly, is disappearing as every day goes by.”

Tania El Khoury divides her time between Beirut and London. Her installations and interactive performances have been seen all over the world. She is also the cofounder of the Lebanese arts group known as Dictaphone Groupe.

Hoda Barakat is a Lebanese writer living in Paris since 1989. Considered to be one of the most important Arabic-language writers of her time, her novels have been translated into many languages including French, English, and Dutch.

Moved, in the early days of the revolution by images of Syrian women digging the graves of their sons in their own gardens, Tania El Khoury decided to investigate. “It started as a political interest. I wanted to know why this was happening. So I started asking journalists first and activists who were living there.

And then, from what I was discovering, I became more and more involved in the stories and started doing interviews with Syrian refugees in Lebanon.” In her sound installation Gardens Speak, El Khoury invites ten participants to listen to the stories of ten civilians killed during the revolution. Refusing to pledge allegiance to the regime of Bashar al-Assad, many families turn down official burials for their dead and decide to bury them in their own gardens. “I wanted to talk about ordinary people who were killed by the regime: it’s not only about the activists, some of these people were just passing by and were killed.” Painstakingly, Tania El Khoury has reconstructed the true story of each of the individuals in her installation through interviews with their families and friends. Gardens Speak also tells us about the bonds between the dead and the living.

Those who remain take on the responsibility of keeping alive the memory of those who are gone. The dead protect the living from the horrors of the regime. Gardens Speak has been translated into several languages and has been presented throughout Europe and the Arab world. “I have noticed that its reception does not vary much from one country to another, because mourning, death, and justice are international themes that affect all of us. Each person can identify with it in a particular way. It was very emotional when it was shown in Beirut and in Cairo because a lot of Syrians came to see us.”

More Lebanese live outside their country than in it. The civil war, obviously, is one reason for that. The writer Hoda Barakat, who writes novels, stories, and plays, is one of those exiles. Although France is her adopted home, the fact that all her novels are set in Lebanon shows that her heart has never left her homeland. “Right now, I’m writing a book that is set elsewhere, but I can’t help it: in some way or another it is as if the characters know Lebanon and have walked the city streets.” In her novels, Barakat presents characters, often male, who live on the margins of society. In the background, history takes place – the violent, brutal history of the civil war. As in The Stone of Laughter (1996), her first book, in which she tells the story of Khalil, a young gay man who refuses to take part in the fighting and locks himself away in his room until the conflict catches up with him. In The Tiller of Waters (2001), Nicolas, who has lost his parents and his mistress in the war, takes refuge in the basement of the family shop and broods on his memories. “It is as if I had an insistent, worrying voice in my head that wants me to tell his story,” she says. Her use of the Arabic language is also central to her creative process as a writer. “Arabic is the language of the world I write about, and the language of my characters. I physically need the sounds of the language, especially its guttural sounds.” Barakat, whose novels have been translated into several languages, has a special relationship with the art of translation: “I work as far as possible with translators who share my literary sensibility.”

Her last novel The Kingdom of This Earth (2012) has recently been translated into Dutch. During her eight-week residency at Passa Porta, she will be talking with Arabic-Dutch translators.

n pied fortement enraciné dans la tradition congolaise et l’autre qui aime voyager et goûter à ce qui se fait dans le monde, pas de doute, Fredy Massamba est un Afropolitain. « La première fois que j’ai entendu parler du terme ‘Afropolitain’, c’était de la part du chercheur et écrivain camerounais Achille Mbembe, » raconte Massamba. « Le point central de sa vision est le rejet catégorique des frontières coloniales qui furent créées sans aucun respect pour les peuples africains, dans l’optique de diviser pour mieux régner. Il faut briser ces frontières et promouvoir l’échange culturel entre les peuples pour aller vers une Afrique jeune, urbaine et dynamique. » « Le festival entre dans cette dynamique et montre une Afrique qui s’affirme avec des jeunes de la diaspora qui sont nés ici,

comprennent la culture d’ici, ont eu une bonne éducation. Ils travaillent et payent leurs impôts comme tout le monde, » explique-t-il. « Ils vont montrer l’Afrique à leur manière, vue par leurs yeux. De son côté, l’Europe a des choses à apprendre car elle est loin de tout connaître sur l’Afrique. » Sur trois jours, le festival présentera plus de septante artistes et acteurs culturels de la diaspora africaine. À l’occasion de concerts, expositions, pièces de théâtre, films et débats, ils nous feront découvrir leur manière de vivre leur africanité en Europe. Avec comme attraction principale le grand spectacle que Fredy Massamba a concocté. « J’invite plein d’amis musiciens avec qui j’ai retravaillé mon répertoire pour ajouter encore plus d’influences afro. J’aurais pu inviter Ray Lema, Les Tambours de Brazza et d’autres grands

tradition. Je constate un refus de culture, une sorte de rejet de la tradition ancestrale. Tout ce qui est européen est beau, tout ce que nous avons ne vaut rien. Je veux leur faire voir la richesse de nos cultures africaines. » Cette richesse culturelle africaine, Massamba la connaît bien. Ayant grandi dans un quartier populaire de Pointe-Noire en République démocratique du Congo et ayant tourné en Afrique occidentale avec Les Tambours de Brazza, ayant visité les Pygmées en République centrafricaine pour apprendre leurs techniques vocales et polyphonies. Vingt ans après son arrivée à Bruxelles, Massamba est une valeur sûre de la musique africaine et du mouvement hip-hop en Belgique et au-delà, ayant tourné avec Zap Mama, Manou Gallo ou encore le rappeur sénégalais Didier Awadi. Ayant aussi fait le pas de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique pour collaborer avec de grands noms du hiphop américain comme Bilal, Mos Def et The Roots.

Un gros bagage musical et culturel, africain et occidental. Deux mondes qui le fascinent et qu’il a voulu combiner depuis sa jeunesse au Congo. Pari réussi sur ses deux premiers albums solo Ethnophony (2010) et Makasi (2013). Un beau mariage entre, d’une part, rap, soul, R&B et funk, et, d’autre part, percussions africaines, flûtes des Pygmées, polyphonies et chants africains en kikongo et lingala.

Focus donc sur les artistes afro-belges, en particulier ceux de Bruxelles, pour montrer la richesse de la scène locale. » On notera la participation de Karavan, un groupe formé par Nicole Letuppe, MarieAnge Teuwen et Massamba qui reprend le répertoire d’Arno a capella, ainsi que du slammeur Badi, dont le prochain album sera produit par Massamba, ou encore du violoniste Sébastien Paz du groupe Askanyi avec qui Massamba est parti en tournée au Mexique récemment.

Parlons-en !

Pour briser les tabous et les silences autour de certains sujets, le festival Afropolitan organise trois débats autour de l’afrophobie, des pratiques du black face ou encore des relations entre les communautés d’origines nord-africaines

et sub-sahariennes à Bruxelles. « On vit au 21e siècle en pleine mondialisation, les peuples sont en train de se réunir.

En même temps, l’Europe se replie sur elle-même, sans se rendre compte que le jour où l’Afrique ferme ses frontières, ça va faire mal, » explique Massamba. « Toutes ces richesses que nous avons en Belgique, les diamants, le café, le cacao, les matières premières, ça vient de quelque part, et il y a des êtres humains qui vivent dans ces pays. Il faut commencer par bien informer les gens. Si les Africains viennent ici, ce n’est pas pour remplir les villes, mais parce que l’Europe nous enfonce là-bas. Les Africains ne peuvent même pas décider eux-mêmes du prix des matières premières ! » Ceux qui connaissent Massamba savent qu’il aime rire et qu’il a un grand sens de l’humour. Mais lorsqu’on en vient aux pratiques « folkloriques » comme celle du Père Fouettard, Massamba ne rit pas. « Ce n’est pas de la comédie, ce sont des gens qui sont là pour se moquer d’une certaine race. Dommage que cela existe encore dans les pays européens qui s’auto-déclarent si développés. C’est inacceptable, c’est une forme de racisme, il n’y a pas d’autre mot. » La relation entre jeunes des communautés nord-africaines et sub-sahariennes est un autre point délicat. « Il y a des frustrations entre Arabes et Africains, c’est un phénomène qui date. Une sorte de racisme qui n’a pas de sens car on est tous Africains. Est-ce religieux ? Peut-être, vu que la plupart des Africains ici sont catholiques, » raconte Massamba. « On ne doit pas se faire la guerre, ça tire l’Afrique vers le bas. Il faut créer plus d’espaces de dialogue, comme l’Espace MAGH qui organise des spectacles et des activités du Maghreb et d’Afrique noire. Il faut éduquer les enfants. Être Marocain, Égyptien ou Algérien, c’est aussi être Africain ! Ce n’est pas pour rien que ces pays jouent dans la coupe d’Afrique. »

indeloos naar het oppervlak opkringelende dieptes. Organische escheriaanse stelsels. Op de mogelijkheden van beweging tobbende stilstand. Bezielde rafelranden. Orde in versplintering. Chaos in een doosje. Met Boris Tellegen haalt het MIMA voor zijn tweede tijdelijke tentoonstelling een kunstenaar in huis die uit de spanning tussen het overzichtelijke en het fragmentarische, het controleerbare en het toevallige, het aanwezige en het mogelijke een praktijk heeft weten te puren die elk hokjesdenken op een zinderende ontsnappingsroute onthaalt. Die in de muur een te overschrijden grens ziet, in het museum een mogelijkheid om de dingen op zijn kop te zetten. “Ik heb er flink wakker van gelegen,

hoor,” lacht Boris Tellegen wanneer we hem enkele weken voor de opening van zijn expo ontmoeten. “Een solotentoonstelling op deze schaal, dat is voor mij wel voor het eerst. Ruim een jaar geleden heb ik de toen nog leegstaande bierbrouwerij bezocht en dan heb ik het zachtjes laten sudderen. Het grote denkwerk is intussen achter de rug en nu begint alles op z’n plek te vallen, maar absoluut ja, ik heb me er druk over gemaakt.”

In het MIMA palmt Boris Tellegen drie verdiepingen in met een niet-chronologische overzichtstentoonstelling – dat mag als je 30 jaar onderweg bent – die van elke verdieping een vernuftige installatiedrager maakt voor bestaand, soms nooit eerder vertoond werk. Een nauwelijks in te dijken output in de vorm van collages,

sculpturen, schetsen, albumhoezen (voor DJ Vadim, Alex Cortez, CiM en... Linkin Park), sneakers, flipperkasten, installaties en zelfs een samenwerking met zijn vader, dichter Toon Tellegen, krijgt hier, samen met inspiratiebronnen en speeltjes, een plek, en dat zonder ook maar één muur aan te raken. “Precies. (Lacht) Ondanks het feit dat ik niet veel graffiti toon, draait het daar toch heel erg om. Het is het fundament waarop mijn hele werk rust. Maar graffiti in een museum blijft moeilijk, vind ik. Daarom raken we ook niks aan. We maken zelf onze wanden, bouwen vitrinekasten, tot een bunker toe.”

De Amsterdamse graffitiscene stilde bij de jonge DELTA midden jaren 1980 vooral twee behoeftes. “Ik was heel ambitieus in die tijd, maar tegelijk merkte ik ook dat

ik eigenlijk best wel verlegen was. Graffiti reikte een spel aan, waarbij je tegelijk heel erg kon opvallen en naam maken, en dan niet als persoon, maar met je alter ego. Heel erg Clark Kent. En daarnaast voelde het elke keer opnieuw tekenen en ontwerpen van je letters op een of andere manier als een soort verlengde van het spelen met lego: vaste elementen, steeds dezelfde bouwsteentjes, die je in ontelbare variaties in elkaar kon steken.

Dat spelen met lego is nooit verdwenen, en die ambitie natuurlijk ook niet. (Lacht) In die zin is graffiti hier tegelijk aanwezig en afwezig. Ik toon ook foto’s, en enkele daarvan maakte ik in de jaren 1980 op het Leidseplein in Amsterdam van jongetjes die naar een tram rennen om hem vol te schrijven. Los van die specifieke vormentaal, die hier minder aanwezig is, gaat het precies daarom: het gevoel niet te willen opgroeien, te willen blijven spelen.”

“Het is als spelen met lego: steeds dezelfde bouwsteentjes, die je in ontelbare variaties in elkaar kan steken” Op de benedenverdieping krijgt die vrijheidsdrang, die polsslag van het eigen ritme, paradoxaal vorm in een bunker, gevuld met een flipperkast, tekeningen en schetsen, een verzameling Transformers en pantserrobots, en enkele sculpturen, waaronder een beeld uit Papoea-NieuwGuinea en eentje dat Boris Tellegens dochter vervaardigde van een cd-rekje dat ze vond op straat. “Beschouw het als een bunker tegen de buitenwereld. Af en toe voel ik die behoefte om me af te schermen, om de wereld weg te blokken. Zo hoopvol is die niet.”

Op de tweede verdieping rust een net iets te grote vriendelijke reus – compleet met gedachtetreintje – met de benen door het raam. “Daar komt het spirituele in terug.

Veel mensen zien er robots in, maar ik zie ze meer als een soort afgodsbeelden.

Ze zweven wat tussen Japanse robots, manga, Transformers, lego, speelgoed en Minecraft, en architectuur, bunkers en hoogbouw. Een totem, of een mascotte... misschien is het dat. Iets met een ziel.”

Een ziel, ergens tussen orde en chaos, minutieuze aandacht en intuïtie, en innerlijke zoektocht en uitwendige sporen. Met de drie dimensies als medium. “Ik heb heel lang de illusie van 3D geschilderd en op een bepaald moment hebben die ontwerpen een tastbare vorm gekregen. Dat was een opeenvolging van kleine stapjes, die daarna grote stappen werden. Een heel evolutionair traject voor mijn gevoel.

Het is elke keer proberen iets heel simpels te vinden en dan kijken of je dat weer een beetje kan oprekken en voortduwen.

Proberen je gezichtsveld zo klein mogelijk te maken en dan zien of je je daartussen kan wrikken.”

Op zoek naar toevalligheden. “Het is zo belangrijk om als je aan het werk bent, goed op te letten of er iets gebeurt wat je niet verwacht, zodat je het kan oppikken.

Ik vind het veel belangrijker om op zoek te gaan naar, of attent te blijven voor die toevalligheden dan met een vastomlijnd plan te werk te gaan. Het is het benutten van mogelijkheden. In mijn schetsboekjes staat elke bladzijde voor een bepaalde richting. De kunst is het gevoel, de belofte van zo een schets vast te houden, de openheid van dat onaffe in een veel gerichtere vorm op te roepen. Of dat nu via de mascottes of totems is, waar het echt gaat over een zekere ruimtelijkheid die je een bepaalde spanning, een associatie met iets verhevens kan meegeven, dan wel via papier, textuur of collages, waar je voortdurend laveert tussen het grillige en het rechte: het is altijd dieper graven, doen en dan kijken wat er gebeurt.”

a pièce de théâtre Discours à la nation marquait la rencontre de David Murgia et d’Ascanio Celestini. Entre le comédien belge et l’homme de théâtre italien, l’osmose était parfaite. Une écriture baroque fougueuse, drôle et engagée, dans la bouche et le corps d’un comédien magnétique et habité. Pourquoi s’arrêter en si bon chemin ? Laïka, leur deuxième collaboration, nous raconte le retour de Jésus dans une banlieue quelconque. Une fable ironique où un pauvre Christ impuissant réenchante le monde de son regard bienveillant.

Après Discours à la nation, vous voici de retour avec un nouveau texte d’Ascanio Celestini. S’inscrit-il dans une certaine continuité ou les deux projets sont-ils plutôt différents ?

David Murgia : Je dirais qu’ils observent la même chose mais avec un point de vue différent. Dans Discours à la Nation, on suivait des personnages qui jonglaient avec l’arme du pouvoir, le langage. Ils

étaient patrons financiers, hommes politiques alors qu’ici au contraire on part du point de vue d’en bas. On accompagne plusieurs personnages, une prostituée, un clochard, une vieille dame souffrant d’Alzheimer, des gens en marge, qui vivent en périphérie urbaine, humaine. Et c’est à travers eux qu’on observe le poids du capitalisme.

L’écriture de Celestini est très belle. Êtesvous parti d’un texte fini ou la pièce s’est-elle construite sur le plateau ?

Murgia : Ascanio est quelqu’un qui travaille l’écriture orale, il écrit en parlant, en racontant des histoires. Moi j’ai travaillé à partir de plusieurs enregistrements mp3 de ses spectacles en Italie. L’écriture est construite pour donner beaucoup de place à l’improvisation, ce qui laisse de la marge pour l’adaptation. Ce qui est important pour moi, c’est la musicalité de la langue, comment garde-t-on des consonances italiennes ou des rythmiques qui dans la langue de Celestini fusent à certains endroits du texte alors que le français

« Je pense qu’il est difficile aujourd’hui de ne pas faire un spectacle engagé » l’alourdirait. Des choix sont aussi à faire pour le sens des mots puisqu’il n’y a pas de version écrite définitive. Je dois m’approprier le texte. Il y a une mise en bouche de l’histoire.

Votre Jésus qui revient n’est pas un homme providentiel ?

Murgia : En effet, ce Jésus-là est quelqu’un qui observe et qui se raconte dans un bar.

Au cours de sa journée, il a vu une série de petits miracles qui ont eu lieu autour de lui. On lui offre un verre et du coup, il commence à raconter. On lui offre un autre verre et il continue à raconter tous les autres personnages qui l’entourent.

Ce n’est pas un Jésus qui semble bienveillant. Il ne faut pas compter sur lui pour changer le monde là, tout de suite, en tout cas dans le spectacle. Mais, par contre, il est là pour s’en émerveiller, pour l’observer, pour s’en étonner et pour mettre des mots.

Des mots qui font du bien par l’humour et la poésie.

Murgia : Il y a dans l’écriture d’Ascanio quelque chose de ludique, une poésie qui sous-tend l’humanité même des personnages. Le regard qu’il pose sur ces banlieues, sur le monde est tendre et lucide et il a aussi la capacité de rendre effrayant et absurde le poids que le capitalisme peut faire peser sur certaines personnes plus que sur d’autres. Il ne parle pas de ces gens de manière accusatrice, mais il

essaye de les comprendre en se rapprochant d’eux. Il prend aussi le temps d’observer sous différents angles. C’est plus intéressant et plus amusant que le regard frontal accusateur qui cherche à défaire.

L’humour, est une arme d’intelligence qui permet de réfléchir plus loin que par la violence et la confrontation. Ce qui ne veut pas dire que la confrontation n’est pas nécessaire. Les deux sont importants.

Mais grâce à cette dose d’humour, on peut prendre de la distance et mieux réfléchir aux problèmes qui sont lancés.

Un guitariste dans Discours à la Nation, ici un accordéoniste, quel est le rôle de la musique ?

Murgia : Avec la langue, je joue déjà de la musique. Dans le verbe, il y a une rythmique, une musique. Mon corps et ma

voix sont déjà un instrument. En tout cas, j’aime y réfléchir comme ça. Et du coup travailler avec un musicien, c’est gai. Ce n’est pas comme si j’étais accompagné, c’est plutôt comme si on était en duo. On forme un groupe, une voix et une guitare ou une voix et un accordéon et avec deux instruments, on peut faire déjà pas mal de choses. Ça permet de ponctuer, de souligner. La musique, c’est important. Avec ce type de récit, c’est un outil qui permet d’amener des couches supplémentaires.

Vous vous êtes engagé avec le mouvement Tout autre chose, Laïka, c’est aussi une manière de faire de la politique autrement ?

Murgia : Je ne fais pas de politique, c’est un spectacle qui porte une vision sur un monde qui ne tourne pas rond. Il accuse certains mécanismes. Dans la mesure où il montre des choses, c’est déjà une forme d’engagement. Je crois qu’il est difficile aujourd’hui de ne pas faire un spectacle engagé, et cela dans une multitude de sens. Ignorer un certain nombre de choses, c’est aussi politique. Moi je suis d’abord un acteur et un raconteur d’histoires. Je suis beaucoup en tournée et ce n’est que quand j’ai des périodes où je sens que je vais pouvoir consacrer de l’énergie pour affronter une aberration, une loi ou autre chose, que je peux aussi m’éloigner des scènes de théâtre et participer à un mouvement ou à une action, ce qui est important dans ma vie de citoyen.

En revanche au théâtre, c’est vraiment des histoires que je raconte et je crois que tous les spectacles auxquels je participe sont, un tant soit peu, politiques puisque mon geste et mon énergie théâtrale sont largement imprégnés de ma vision du monde en tant que citoyen. On vit dans un monde bourré d’inégalités et tout ça transparaît dans les histoires que je partage.

nstallé à Bruxelles depuis deux ans, le duo artistique nomade franco-chinois Benoit + Bo développe un travail sur la ville, ses habitants et sur l’identité du territoire. Leur première exposition baptisée Toujours heureux s’ouvrait deux jours après les attentats de mars. Invités par Carine Fol à exposer dans la CENTRALE.box, ils ne cèdent pas et reviennent avec un projet qu’ils intitulent Toujours Bruxellois.

Dans cette exposition vous vous invitez chez des Bruxellois, comment est né ce projet ?

Benoit : Quand on était en Australie, on a commencé à filmer et à prendre en photo des gens avec des masques. Mais c’est à Bruxelles qu’on a vraiment commencé ce travail. L’idée est toute simple, on propose aux gens de les photographier la tête dissimulée par un masque chez eux ou au travail.

Qu’est-ce qui vous intéresse dans le masque ?

Benoit : C’est un travail sur l’anonymat et le stéréotype. Les gens sont invités à choisir parmi une vingtaine de masques qui reflètent des physiques et des caractères humains, mais il y a aussi deux

animaux importants dans la mythologie chinoise : le singe et le cochon.

Bo : Le masque révèle beaucoup les gens. Quand le visage est caché, le corps parle, on est plus libre, il y a chez la plupart un certain laisser-aller.

D’où proviennent ces masques ?

Bo : Ce sont des masques en papier mâché qu’on achète en Chine et qu’on retravaille. Ils sont liés aux fêtes agricoles et lunaires qui se tiennent dans les campagnes. C’est une tradition qui tend à disparaître mais on observe chez certains le besoin d’un retour aux sources.

Benoit : Ce sont des personnages, des archétypes de la vie villageoise ou de la comédie humaine, un peu comme dans la comedia del arte, mais ils sont toujours souriants.

Ils sont là pour faire rire, faire des pitreries et des remarques grivoises. Mais ce n’est pas comme le carnaval parce qu’il n’y a pas ce côté transgressif avec la remise en cause du pouvoir.

Vous présentez également des images où vous vous mettez en scène dans la ville.

Benoit : On utilise la ville comme une scène de théâtre où l’on se met en scène également avec des masques. Quand on prend des gens en photo, ils ne jouent pas, ils restent eux-mêmes. Nos personnages sont virtuels, ils n’ont pas d’histoire ou de caractère. Ils existent uniquement pour l’image.

On intervient ensuite sur la photo en ajoutant des éléments extérieurs comme des démons chinois qui rappellent les diableries d’Ensor.

izzie is currently in the final stages of post-production. This thriller about Lizzie Borden, a young American who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1892 stars Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. But that is not the Lizzie Borden that Cinematek will soon be celebrating, though according to Wikipedia there is a connection. Cinematek’s Lizzie Borden was born Linda Elizabeth Borden, but when she was eleven she decided to name herself after the Borden who had taken an axe to her parents 125 years ago. There are no age restrictions on being a rebel.

After her studies, Lizzie Borden moved to New York. A retrospective of the work of Nouvelle Vague icon Jean-Luc Godard convinced her to become a filmmaker rather than a painter. She debuted in 1976 with Regrouping, an experimental documentary about a group of young women from New York who meet regularly and agree that men are the enemy.

Her fame is mostly due, however, to her next film: Born in Flames (1983). Borden made this sci-fi film with the blistering passion and determination of a guerrilla warrior in the grim streets of New York in the early 1980s. A whole decade after a socialist revolution, women viscerally experience that they are no better off in the new America as they were in the old. Discrimination, assault, and sexism are still an everyday reality. Numerous women, including radical lesbians, protest in various ways

against this oppression and subjugation. Honey and Isabel take to the airwaves to indict the patriarchy in their radio programmes on pirate radio stations. You can say a lot with words and music.

But is it enough? The black activist Adelaide moves to the Sahara to be trained as a guerrilla. When she comes back, the police arrest her and shortly afterwards, she’s found dead in her prison cell. #BlackLivesMatter avant-le-hashtag. Does the World Trade Center need to be bombed before anyone will listen to women?

Borden portrays diverse, by turns radical positions and perspectives in a very chaotic but incisive and unyielding political film. By 2017, it should have been a mere remnant of a patriarchal past, but it is actually still profoundly relevant. That and the recent restoration have cast Lizzie Borden back into the spotlight. Born in Flames was followed by Working Girls (1986), which was screened in Cannes and sketched the lives of a number of prostitutes who work in a luxury brothel. But Borden made no more films of any note. After the “horrendous” Hollywood thriller Love Crimes (1992), she landed in what she calls “movie jail”. She isn’t coming to Brussels to talk about the episodes of Red Shoe Diaries or Silk Stalkings that she directed. But the fire of Born in Flames is still burning.

n déjeuner délicieux et équilibré pour 9 euros. Ce scénario que l’on croirait sorti d’un livre d’écolo-fiction, existe pour de vrai. Cela se passe de l’autre côté du canal.

Bel Mundo est logé au rez-de-chaussée d’un imposant bâtiment de pierre. À l’intérieur, la salle se présente sous la forme d’un grand L, clair et dépouillé. Le décor ? Une esthétique qui ne cache rien – gaines techniques, tuyaux… ponctuée d’un mobilier de bois clair construit dans des palettes de transport. Alors que la cantine est bondée, il ne reste quasi plus une place à 13h30, l’accueil n’en est pas moins prévenant. On va droit au but en commandant une soupe et un plat du jour. La première respire la fraîcheur : de bons chicons de saison relevés avec une pointe curry. Délicieux. Le détail qui tue ? Le potage est servi à même la soupière, comme à la maison. Son prix ? Surréaliste : 1,50 euro. Le plat arrive ensuite. Il s’agit d’une purée épaisse présentée avec une généreuse portion de crevettes grises. Pour 7,50 euros, la préparation - un poil pas assez chaude, c’est le seul reproche – est

agrémentée de fromage frais et d’herbes aromatiques – oseille, roquette, mâche et même un peu de chou frisé. Verdict ? À tomber ! On laisse fondre sur la langue chaque bouchée qui mélange la vivacité des crevettes, l’acidité du fromage, l’amertume des herbes et la rondeur de la pomme de terre. On quitte l’endroit en reprenant une bonne dose de chaleur humaine par le biais du serveur qui nous tend une main franche.

Après coup, on apprendra que Bel Mundo fait pousser ses légumes à l’arrière du bâtiment dans un potager de 1500m2, que l’adresse pratique le zero waste, la réinsertion sociale et l’économie durable. Durer, c’est bien tout le mal qu’on souhaite à cette adresse qui montre l’horizon de toute gastronomie à venir : le collectif.

kan bij Bel Mundo, gelegen op de benedenverdieping van een imposant stenen gebouw. Binnen neemt de zaal een grote L-vorm aan, die helder is ingericht. Technische kokers en buizen zijn gewoon zichtbaar en het meubilair in blank hout is afkomstig van oude palletten. Ondanks het feit dat de kantine propvol zit – om 13.30 uur is er nauwelijks nog een plek vrij – doet dat niets af aan de attente ontvangst.

Wij bestelden een soep en een dagschotel. Die eerste bleek een uiterst verse witloofsoep, pal in het seizoen, opgewerkt met een currytoets. Verrukkelijk. Het puntje op de i: de soep werd, zoals thuis, opgediend in een soepterrine, en dat voor de surrealistische prijs van 1,50 euro. Het hoofdgerecht was een dikke puree met een genereuze portie grijze garnalen.

Voor 7,50 euro werd het gerecht – net niet warm genoeg, zowat het enige verwijt dat we kunnen maken – opgeluisterd met verse kaas en aromatische groenten – zuring, raketsla, veldsla en zelfs wat boerenkool. Ons verdict? Om van achterover te vallen! Elke hap smolt weg op de tong en vermengde wondermooi de levendigheid van garnalen, de scherpte van de kaas, de bitterheid van de kruiding en de afgeronde smaak van de aardappelen. We verlieten de plek met een portie menselijke warmte: een hand van de ober. Achteraf vernamen we nog dat Bel Mundo zijn eigen groenten kweekt in een moestuin van 1.500 m2 achter het gebouw, en dat het zich inzet voor een totale afbouw van de afvalstapel, sociale tewerkstelling en een duurzame economie. Die duurzaamheid is wat we ook dit adres toewensen, dat toont dat de toekomst van de gastronomie aan het collectieve is.

EN | A delicious and well-balanced lunch for €9? It really exists at Bel Mundo, situated on the ground floor of an imposing stone building. Inside, the space is shaped like a big “L”, light and stripped back. The decor has an aesthetic which leaves nothing to the imagination; utility ducts, pipes, etc. Punctuated by pale wooden furniture built using old transport pallets. The place was packed, but the service was no less considerate. Getting straight to the point, we ordered soup and the special of the day. The soup was remarkably fresh: good seasonal Belgian endive, spiced up with a hint of curry. Delicious. Best of all, the soup was even served in a tureen, just like at home. The price was absurd: €1.50.

Then came the main course. It consisted of a thick puree served with a generous portion of shrimps. For €7.50, the dish – of which our only criticism is that it could have been slightly warmer – was garnished with fromage frais and aromatic herbs: sorrel, rocket, lamb’s lettuce, and even a bit of curly kale. Our verdict: to die for! Every mouthful melted on our tongues, combining the liveliness of the shrimp, the sharpness of the cheese, the bitterness of the herbs, and the full-bodied flavour of the potato. We left the place feeling replenished, warmed by a hearty handshake from the waiter.

Later, we discovered that Bel Mundo grow their own produce behind the building in a vegetable patch comprising 1,500 m², and that the establishment practices a “zero-waste” policy, social reintegration, and sustainable economics. That is exactly what we hope this place will be: sustainable. It provides us with a vision of how all cooking will be done in the future: collectively.

NL | Vorig jaar in maart stierf onverwacht de Brits-

Iraakse sterarchitecte Zaha Hadid, die op verschillende plekken in de wereld opmerkelijke gebouwen neerzette. Ze overleed net voordat in Antwerpen haar spectaculaire uitbreiding van het Havenhuis werd geopend. In die periode plande de Belgische theatermaker met Iraakse roots Haider Al Timimi een jeugdtheaterstuk over een Belgisch-Iraakse architect die door een Iraakse emir uitgenodigd wordt om op het oorlogspuin van Bagdad een operagebouw te doen verrijzen. Hadid werd prompt de inspiratiebron voor de fictieve architect die Al Timimi in het stuk opvoert.

Die laat zich in zijn geboorteland vergezellen van een operazangeres, die het werk van Puccini moet laten weerklinken in het nieuwe gebouw. Tot het misloopt met dat nieuwe operagebouw, waardoor duidelijk wordt dat de utopie van een voorspoedige wederopbouw niet een-twee-drie te verwezenlijken is.

EN | The Beursschouwburg is starting the new year with a themed programme on solitude and loneliness. Until April, the performing arts, films, concerts, debates, and exhibitions will all be about people who go it alone. The programme’s general title is O Solitude, which was borrowed from an ode to independent individuals who have the freedom to determine their own destiny written by the English baroque composer Henry Purcell.

O Solitude is starting with an opening weekend on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 February. Among other things, the programme features the opening of the exhibition The Understanding of Nonsense by Dutch artist Feiko Beckers. He has filled the exhibition space with three pile dwellings in which visitors can behold his little puzzles in relative isolation. Another highlight is the Belgian première of the solo Mercurial George by Canadian choreographer Dana Michel – who explores her own particularity as a Canadian-Caribbean dance curiosity.

n a énormément écrit à son sujet et pourtant nous ne savons rien d’elle. Jackie est une exception en la matière », prétend Pablo Larraín. Le réalisateur chilien doit sa renommée à des films forts sur l’histoire du Chili qui accordent une place de choix au rôle de la mythologie (No, Neruda). Jackie est taillé dans la même étoffe sauf que cette fois, c’est dans l’Amérique de l’après-guerre que Larraín a trouvé sa figure mythique : Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy alias Jackie Kennedy, Jackie O ou Jackie.

Vous aurez toujours le loisir de lire sa biographie sur Wikipédia puisque Larraín se limite à la journée qui précède ainsi qu’aux heures et jours qui suivent la mort du président John F. Kennedy, le 22 novembre 1963 à Dallas. Ce qui lui permet de montrer différentes facettes du personnage : la première dame et son glamour au service du président, l’épouse qui assiste à la mort de son mari, la mère, la veuve éplorée dans la sphère privée, la veuve en deuil en public. Sa

facette la plus intéressante est sans doute celle de la Jackie qui n’a que trop conscience que l’image que JFK laissera derrière lui est entre ses mains : mieux vaut celle du noble roi Arthur que celle du coureur de jupons invétéré qui n’a pas tellement brillé comme président. Un peu sec, dites-vous ? Le film ne l’est pas le moins du monde. Natalie Portman joue encore mieux que dans Black Swan et ne s’abaisse pas à une simple imitation à la Meryl Streep. Larraín, quant à lui, mobilise toutes les ressources du cinéma pour vous assurer une plongée dans le monde de Jackie (selon lui) : entre rêve et réalité. Afin de garder le mystère intact, nous n’en dirons pas plus. Sachez seulement qu’à l’issue de ce très beau film, Jackie sera pour vous bien plus que cette femme de président portant de grandes lunettes et des tailleurs français.

icoon als Jackie Kennedy? Pablo Larraín volgt haar in de dagen rond de moord op president John F. Kennedy. Dat staat hem toe een waaier aan facetten te tonen, maar écht interessant wordt het wanneer de Jackie in beeld komt die beseft dat ze de kans heeft om het beeld te bepalen dat de getraumatiseerde natie aan JFK overhoudt.

Natalie Portman is fenomenaal, Larraín put de cinematografische middelen uit en toont Jackies wereld zoals hij ze zich voorstelt: half echt, half droom. Sterk!

je meevoelen, -lachen en -huilen, en doet je snakken naar een omhelzing met een mens. Bijna hadden we zwarte homoseksueel geschreven. Huidskleur en geaardheid zijn geen onbelangrijke details in Chirons leven, maar Moonlight maakt niet de fout hem daartoe te reduceren en laat in drie hoofdstukken het ontluiken zien van een jongen in een man in al zijn goedheid en complexiteit. In het eerste vindt het zwijgzame kind van een drugsverslaafde moeder in een achtergestelde buurt van Miami aansluiting bij een zorgzame crackdealer. In het tweede probeert een tiener zich staande te houden in een brutale omgeving. In het derde zien we de man die hij geworden is. Nooit merk je dat Barry Jenkins zijn scenario baseerde op een toneelstuk. De beelden vertellen meer dan woorden kunnen doen. De acteurs weten dat ze goud in handen hebben. Hartverscheurend in zijn gelaagdheid en breekbaarheid.

opvallend hoeveel films er onder zijn ambtstermijn in Hollywood zijn gemaakt met een hoopvolle kijk op de walgelijke traditie van rassenscheiding. Het feelgooddrama Hidden figures is er daar één van. De film volgt een trio Afro-Amerikaanse vrouwen, alle drie wiskundebollebozen, die in het NASA-ruimtecentrum in Virginia anno 1961 aan de elite van blanke mannen bewijzen dat ze nodig zijn om de Russen te kloppen in de wedloop naar de maan. De heldere retrokleuren, een sympathieke rol van Kevin Costner, een running gag over coloured only-toiletten en de funky soundtrack: regisseur Theodore Melfi tempert de woede om het onrecht, om subtiel te focussen op de moedige, nooit onderdanige manier waarmee deze vrouwen – onder wie de Oscar-genomineerde Octavia Spencer – voor meer gelijkheid strijden. Donald ‘Grab them by the pussy’ Trump kan maar beter op zijn woorden letten.

La force des images dépasse celle des mots. Les acteurs ont conscience de manipuler un diamant cinématographique. Bouleversant par sa fragilité et sa complexité.

EN | There are few Belgian directors who have made as many films as the Brussels-based Boris Lehman. According to the man himself, he has made more than five hundred. Following his decision to retire, Cinéma Nova is paying tribute to one of the most distinctive figures in the Belgian film landscape.

And that is not because of his long grey hair, about which he once even made a film. Lehman is more of a maverick and unconventional director than a big crowd-pleaser. An artist-philosopher with a camera. He is also a city poet, though of the uncompromising type. In case things aren’t completely clear: directors don’t get any more personal than Lehman. It’s no coincidence that people say of him that “if he could, he would spool himself through the projector.” Auto-fiction on film reel, videotape, and recently also available in digital format.

The programme Cinéma Nova is dedicating to Lehman features eleven films that could not be less eclectic, but which do provide an excellent overview of the kind of cinema he stands for. Among others, they’re screening Before the Beginning, an encounter between Lehman and his American kindred spirit Stephen Dwoskin. And his three-part Mes entretiens filmés, cinephile interviews with major figures in the film industry like Henri Storck, Robert Kramer, Jonas Mekas, Jean Rouch, and Dominique Païni. You could call these poetic lessons in film centred around Lehman, who was always on a journey, searching, and questioning – and it is this process that also forms part of his (diary) films.

NL | “Ik word tegenwoordig zelfs aangekondigd als ‘de Vlaamse saxofonist’,” zegt Nicolas Kummert lachend als we hem complimenteren met zijn uitstekende Nederlands. De Brusselse jazzmuzikant, die een tijdje in Parijs woonde maar opgroeide in Saint-Marc, een dorpje in de buurt van Namen, doet momenteel de tour van de Vlaamse culturele centra met Drifter.

Het kwartet met ook de Finse pianist Alexi Tuomarila en drummer Teun Verbruggen in de rangen gooide onlangs hoge ogen in Flagey.

Maar we ontmoeten hem in Espace Senghor, waar hij af en toe komt repeteren en straks samen met Lionel Loueke zijn nieuwe album La diversité voorstelt. “Het klikte meteen,” zegt Kummert over de New Yorkse gitarist met wortels in Benin. “Hij straalt helemaal niet uit dat hij net nog met pakweg Chick Corea of Herbie Hancock heeft gespeeld.” Kummert heeft een lange voorgeschiedenis met Afrika. “Op mijn zestiende ontmoette ik een Senegalese saxofonist die ik daarna tijdens de zomervakantie in Dakar heb opgezocht, een ware openbaring voor een jongen uit Saint-Marc.” Sindsdien keerde hij meerdere keren terug en trok hij met verschillende muziekprojecten ook naar Benin en Mali.

“Afrika heeft me de ogen geopend. Muzikanten hebben er een duidelijkere rol in de gemeenschap. Hier steunt de overheid ons wel, maar we blijven toch een beetje apart staan.” Dat is 46 b ruzz

meteen ook de reden waarom een globetrotter als Kummert zich zo goed voelt in Espace Senghor. Het Etterbeekse cc probeert de link te leggen tussen de lokale gemeenschap en de rest van de wereld, en is bovendien genoemd naar Léopold Sédar Senghor. “Dat was niet alleen de eerste president van Senegal, maar ook een dichter en filosoof die altijd een sterke band tussen Europa en Afrika heeft nagestreefd.

Zijn boodschap is hier op de muur gekalkt: ‘J’ai rêvé d’un monde de soleil dans la fraternité de mes frères aux yeux bleus.’ Een soort die puur wil blijven, is evolutionair gezien trouwens gedoemd om te verdwijnen.”

Daarnaast houdt Kummert gewoon van het idee dat een president ook een dichter kan zijn, zeker in onzekere tijden. Het sluit aan bij zijn persoonlijkheid én zijn tenorsaxofoonspel, allebei zachtaardig en dromerig. Brad Mehldau omschreef dat een dikke tien jaar geleden al als “wonderful gentleness”. “Ik kan mij niet altijd uitdrukken met veel noten of opborrelende energie, wil me nooit opdringen, dingen of gevoelens forceren. Ook niet als ik zing.

Nochtans is het geen concept om een easylisteningplaat te maken. Zowel bij Drifter als bij Lionel wil ik niet te veel op voorhand afspreken.

“Mijn kinderen helpen me afstand te nemen van wat ik als muzikant wil betekenen. Ze doen me inzien dat de wereld niet rond mij draait. Deze balafon bracht ik mee van een residentie in Mali. Ze waren er meteen dol op. Ik zie het als mijn verantwoordelijkheid om ook hun ogen te openen.”
