La ville à travers l’objectif d’un photographe bruxellois

« Cette image a été prise dans le quartier Anneessens. J’ai tout de suite remarqué cet arbre perdu en plein milieu du chantier. C’était un spectacle assez triste et pour cause; on y trouvait, il n’y a pas si longtemps, un parc avec une plaine de jeu et un terrain de foot pour les jeunes du quartier. À la place: le vide, des barrières et un projet de logement. J’aime Bruxelles mais il y a parfois des endroits sacrifiés et des décisions incohérentes. Le parc sera-t-il reconstruit ? Au milieu de gros immeubles, cela me semble utopique. Il reste cet arbre, seul souvenir de ce que fut cet endroit. » FR

Chrystel Mukeba (Belgique, 1983) a étudié la photographie à l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles et fut l’assistante de Vincen Beeckman. En 2016, elle est sélectionnée pour la FotoFilmic’16 Summer Shortlist. Cet été, elle exposera en solo à la 44 Gallery à Bruges.

Are you happy?!

As far as I remember, in my whole life there has only been one person who asked me directly whether I was happy. I was working in a jazz café in Antwerp. She was one of my customers, an American woman on her honeymoon. First she asked me whether I was married. I had to ask in the negative; I didn’t even have a boyfriend. She didn’t only look surprised, but I could also tell from how high her voice was on the last word. “But...are you happy?!”

The question made me angry at the time, and it continues to make me angry when I think about it. As though happiness is something that you couldn’t possibly experience alone. At the same time, I must admit that waking up EN

j’adapte by Justine Lequette. The piece was based on a documentary that might be one of my favourites. Chronique d’un été is set in Paris in the 1960s. Anthropologist-filmmaker Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin look for answers to this simple question: are you happy? And what should you do to increase your quality of life? They speak to workers, students, and migrants. On the street and at home, while they drink red wine and smoke cigarettes and act as though the camera is not there.

Love can also be a hindrance to happiness, 20-year-old student Jean-Pierre says. He has to invest too much of himself, and the relationship demands too many compromises of what he really wants to do, namely engage actively in politics. Someone else says that they would be happier with more money and he would be able to organise his life the way he wanted. I think these sorts of stories are universal.

Perhaps our perception of happiness doesn’t change at all, however many years pass.

I go back to a list of things that made me happy ten years ago. I remember that it said “feeling beach sand between my toes”, “reading the Saturday paper leisurely”, “going on holiday with my friends.” If I really think about it, those things are still true. But I have added new things. Waking up to the radio alarm, watching the sun set from my balcony, and finding the right words to express myself at the right time.

I get up from my seat in the Théâtre National.

Happily. I am happy that I remembered that list, which I had forgotten for years. I walk to the metro home, alone. But before I even get home, I have told two people that I love about what I have seen.

Over the summer, The Fuse is expanding its action radius considerably. Brussels’s techno temple will be providing music at Brussel Bad/Bruxelles les Bains on Friday 28 July. On Sunday 9 July, they will celebrate the birth of their very own outdoor festival Crossroads or XRDS for short. This small-scale alternative to Tomorrowland will take place in the Vijverspark/parc des Étangs in Anderlecht, immediately below EN

the Ring, and you can dance from just after lunch until 10 pm, to a total of sixteen acts. The programme includes one of the pioneers of the minimal techno movement, Robert Hood. The Detroit-based producer and DJ broke through with Jeff Mills in the 1990s in the legendary collective/record label Underground Resistance, and will soon also be coming to the Boiler Room at Pukkelpop to play a live set.

Bent u ook zo’n zoetbloedige goedzak die tijdens de zomer alle insecten naar zich toe zuigt in de hoop anderen van die vervelende, jeukende beten te besparen? Geen dank. Maar weet dat dat niet altijd even handig is, zeker als je indruk moet gaan maken met je normaal gezien perfect volmaakte lijf in ginds paradijselijke oord. Dat hoeft zelfs niet aan de andere kant van de wereld te zijn. Zo mixt het exotische Brusselse avant-gardeplatform Sous les Tropiques je zomaar een lekker frisse C O C K T A I L in LaVallée (die neon op de affiche is inderdaad die van Cocktail, de revolutionaire prent met levende shaker Tom Cruise), twee weekends met tentoonstellingen, performances en concerten. Opletten, want een van de bands die er aantreedt, heet Insecte.

Het showbizzkoppel Nicole & Hugo was eigenlijk al een tijdje gestopt met optreden, maar speciaal voor de Viva Vlaanderen Band, een gelegenheidscollectief dat straks op de Grote Markt het voorprogramma speelt van The Clement Peerens Explosition, duiken ze nog eens in de voorraadkast met danspasjes, -plunjes en meezingers. Hoewel de band met onder anderen Will Tura, Stijn Meuris en Jo Lemaire er pas om acht uur ’s avonds aan begint, zullen ze iedereen een goeiemorgen toezingen en het minste deel weer sensationeel vinden. Andere hoogtepunten van de Vlaamse feestdag, die in Brussel gewoontegetrouw plaatsvindt onder de noemer Brussel Danst, zijn de urban dancebattles en de Block Party met dj TLP op het Muntplein en de laagdrempelige zangstondes op en rond de Beurs, waar ook het Brussels Philharmonic langskomt.

ZEE consacre une exposition au graveur et pionnier de la BD Frans Masereel (1889-1972) qu’il met en dialogue avec le travail d’artistes contemporains comme Anton Kannemeyer, Dan Perjovschi et William Kentridge. En guise de préparation, vous pouvez aller voir Les mains libres à Flagey, film dans lequel Jérôme Laffont met en images la résistance visuelle de Masereel sous la forme d’une correspondance imaginaire avec l’artiste. Avec l’aide d’Olivier Deprez, le maître de la gravure que l’on connaît via ses surprenantes BD chez Frémok, ses cinématogravures et son affiliation au collectif bruxellois WREK.

by Menahem Golan, the notorious boss of the Cannon Studios, Can't Stop the Music, a piece of shameless camp set to a soundtrack by The Village People, and Staying Alive, the flopped sequel to Saturday Night Fever that was directed by...Sylvester Stallone. Hot stuff!

Voor de laatste voorstellingen van Othello-bewerking met autobiografische elementen Ne swarte trekken Sigrid Vinks en Jan Decorte eind juli naar Theater Aan Zee in Oostende. Dichter in de buurt van een traditionele vakantie komen ze niet. Hun zomer is er een van een aantal vaste Brusselse rituelen. — MICHAËL BELLON • FOTO: IVAN PUT ✹ FREDERIC BLONDEEL Ja, u en ik eten tijdens de zomer ook wel eens een ijsje, maar Sigrid Vinks doet dat elke dag!

Het vaste adres voor deze unguilty pleasure is chocolatier Frederic Blondeel aan de Baksteenkaai. “Gezond? Waarom niet? Het gaat niet om monstercoupes, hè! Wij doen nooit aan overdaad, maar we zijn ook geen gezondheidsfreaks. Het is belangrijk om voor jezelf te zorgen, maar ook om jezelf af en toe een plezier te gunnen. En als dat kan met kleine, onnozele dingen als een ijsje, moet je dat niet laten. Jan is wel niet zo’n ijsjesman, en hij probeert na zijn knieoperatie wat aan zijn conditie te werken, maar als we in de winter overschakelen op onze dagelijkse koek bij Charli (de bakkerij in de Sint-Katelijnestraat, mb), dan eet hij wel mee.” Met ijssalon Gaston is er op de Baksteenkaai sinds kort een geduchte concurrent bij gekomen, maar daar moet Vinks niet van weten. “Te veel volk en te ingewikkelde smaken, groene peper en gember en zo. Ik heb bij Blondeel al alle smaken geprobeerd, maar ik grijp altijd terug naar vanille. ✹ FLAGEY Vinks en Decorte wonen in de bovenstad, niet ver van het Ter Kamerenbos, maar zijn in die buurt niet zo vaak te vinden. “Grote wandelaars zijn we niet. We hebben op ons appartement een prachtig terras en van daaruit kijken we ook wel eens naar de lucht en de bomen. De bovenstad, place du Châtelain... dat is toch een andere wereld. Daar zit ook veel volk van de Europese instellingen waar je niet mee omgaat.

De mensen die we kennen, zitten in de benedenstad. Maar mijn vaste zaterdaguitstap

gaat naar de markt op het Flageyplein in Elsene. Daar heb je de beste bloemenkraam van heel België, bij Nico. Het zijn de enige middenstanders die ik nog nooit heb horen klagen. Nico is getrouwd met een Finse die hij op het plein heeft leren kennen, en hij is zelfs al naar onze voorstellingen komen kijken. We doen elke keer een klapke, en ik koop altijd meerdere boeketten, die goedkoper en verser zijn dan elders. Op de heenweg loop ik elke keer langs de Jardin du Roi (de kleine Koningstuin aan Louiza) en de Vijvers van Elsene. Op de terugweg ga ik eerst een koffie drinken in Café Belga en dan wandel ik langs de Vleurgatsesteenweg om bij Tagawa sushi te kopen.”

✹ ZWEMBAD ASPRIA Twee keer per week trekken Vinks en Decorte hun beste zwemkostuum aan. “Toen we twee jaar geleden op de Ruhrtriennale speelden, zaten we in een hotel met zwembad en dat was heel plezant. Dus vroeg Jan om ook in Brussel op zoek te gaan naar een zwembad waar niet te veel klein mannen rondlopen. (Lacht) Hij heeft niets tegen kinderen, hoor. Maar met dat lawaai en al die chloor… Zo zijn we bij fitnessclub Aspria beland. Daar zit veel volk van de EU, maar die komen vooral tijdens de middag of na de werkuren fanatiek trainen. Als je tussen twee en vier in de namiddag gaat, is er geen kat. Dan kunnen we dwars door de banen zwemmen. Want wij zijn geen goede zwemmers, hè. Wij proberen gewoon allerlei onorthodoxe slagen uit en plonzen wat rond in het water. Het enige wat ik kan, is een combinatie van crawl met mijn armen en schoolslag met mijn benen. Sigrid Vinks: een bloem van een meisje op het Flageyplein

✹ DARINGMAN Martine, dat is de naam van de uitbaatster van café Au Daringman aan de Vlaamsesteenweg, dat voor Vinks en Decorte haast een tweede thuis is. ’s Avonds is het er ons te druk – in het centrum in het algemeen trouwens. Maar in de namiddag is het er zeer aangenaam. Wij hebben daar onze vaste tafel en dat is eigenlijk ook ons bureau. Als we afspraken maken, ook voor interviews, gebeurt dat altijd daar. En als mensen ons willen zien, weten ze waar ze moeten zijn.” Met de witte wijn is het sinds een tijdje wel gedaan. “Voor Jan is het een koffie, Coca-Cola Zero en af en toe een pintje. Voor mij een koffie, want als wij daar zitten is het voor ons eigenlijk nog ochtend. Wij gaan pas slapen tegen drie, vier uur ’s nachts en staan niet op voor de middag.” ➔ Vlaamsesteenweg 37 rue de Flandre, Brussel/Bruxelles

✹ KAAISTUDIO’S Ondertussen moet er ook nog gewerkt worden.

Op 13 oktober gaat Stand down in première: meer autobiografisch werk, ditmaal van een soundtrack voorzien door Jan Paternoster en Dries Van Dijck van Black Box Revelation.

Daarom spendeert het theaterkoppel de eerste weken van augustus in zijn vaste zomerverblijf: de repetitielokalen van de Kaaistudio’s. “Wij werken graag in de zomer, omdat het dan rustig is in Brussel. Ook de Kaaistudio’s zijn leeg en dat is heel aangenaam. We vragen er een ruimte die helemaal voor ons is. Dit jaar is dat wat problematisch, omdat er verbouwingswerken aan de gang zijn, maar speciaal voor ons vrijwaren ze de dansstudio’s. We kennen Dries en Jan van bij Martine en het klikte meteen. We hadden nooit gedacht dat ze met ons wilden samenwerken, maar ze waren direct heel enthousiast. Ze zijn naar de première van Ne swarte gekomen. Het was van zijn dertiende geleden dat Dries nog een toneelstuk had gezien, maar ze vonden het allebei fantastisch.

Daarna hebben we nog wat moeten discussiëren met het management, want die mannen zijn natuurlijk wel wat anders gewoon dan theater te maken met een groepje zonder subsidies – ze hebben ook een plaat te maken en festivals te spelen. De eerste drie weken zitten we daar om te werken. Zij gaan nieuwe muziek componeren, wij gaan ons ding doen en dat brengen we dan samen. Alleen nog een vervanger vinden voor de koffiemachine in de foyer.” ➔ www.kaaitheater.be

Agnès Varda & JR « On fait notre cirque et on repart »

Un des films les plus enthousiasmants et les plus acclamés cette année au Festival de Cannes fut Visages Villages. Dans ce documentaire l’artiste JR et la grande dame Agnès Varda voyagent à travers la France provinciale. Quand ils ne se chamaillent pas, ils transforment un villageois, un facteur ou une femme de docker en héros. « Il faut résister à la paresse et à l’imbécillité » — NIELS RUËLL

la route » léger mais tout sauf creux sur la France, sur eux-mêmes, sur le vieillissement et sur le respect de l'autre.

CAMION MAGIQUE Varda a 89 ans, JR, 34. Dans le film, ils en rigolent – « C’était pas dans une discothèque » - en parlant de la manière dont ils se sont rencontrés. La réalité est légèrement plus banale. Un jour, Rosalie Varda a proposé à JR de rencontrer sa mère. Accepter fut pour lui « une évidence ». « Ça peut paraître dingue mais ça a tout de suite matché. Je l’ai rencontrée le lundi à son atelier. Le mardi, elle est venue me voir dans mon atelier et le mercredi on a commencé à travailler ensemble. », dit JR en rigolant. Depuis les Plages d’Agnès en 2011, un autodocumentaire dans lequel elle revient sur les plages qui ont marqué sa vie, Agnès Varda n’avait plus tourné de film . « Je n’ai jamais fait un plan de carrière. J’attends qu’il y ait un sujet, quelque chose de suffisamment fort pour

lors que Bruxelles, sa ville natale, et Paris se remettaient des attentats terroristes et que le monde accumulait les mauvaises nouvelles, Agnès Varda est partie en balade avec JR. La grande dame du cinéma d’auteur français, pionnière de la Nouvelle Vague, et le célèbre street artist qui pourrait être son petit-fils, ont parcouru les hameaux reculés de France, ses usines et sa région agricole. Ils ont fait connaissance avec leurs habitants et les ont photographiés. JR a agrandi certains portraits pour en faire des affiches géantes qui furent collées sur des façades, des murs vierges et des lieux marquants, à l'instar de son travail réalisé dans les banlieues françaises, les favelas de Rio de Janeiro ou encore en Israël et en Palestine.

Entre deux rencontres, le duo au grand cœur, plein d’imagination et à la curiosité contagieuse, échangent leurs impressions. Ils se sont basés sur les moments les plus forts de leur voyage pour construire un documentaire « sur

JR Naît en région parisienne en 1983.

Tout comme Banksy, JR ne voit pas pourquoi son travail devrait être dissimulé dans une galerie lorsque l’espace public est à disposition.

Pour son projet Women are heroes, il a photographié de près le visage de femmes dans les quartiers chauds de Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi et Monrovia et a collé leurs portraits en très grand sur des toits et des trains.

2001 : commence à photographier ses escapades nocturnes et à placarder des affiches en noir et blanc gigantesques.

Tient à garder l’anonymat, cache ses yeux derrière des lunettes de soleil sombres et utilise le pseudo JR.

AGNÈS VARDA Naît à Ixelles en 1928.

Quitte la Belgique pour la France pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

1954 : sans aucune expérience ni budget, elle tourne un premier film. La Pointe courte précède la Nouvelle Vague.

1962 : elle se fait un nom avec Cléo de 5 à 7, un poème filmique sur une chanteuse populaire qui flâne dans Paris en attendant de savoir si ses jours sont comptés.

Parmi la cinquantaine de films qu’elle compte à son actif, il y a les succès Sans toit si loi (1985) et Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (1999).

En 2003, elle entame sa troisième vie artistique comme artiste plasticienne.

En 2016, elle est exposée au Musée d’Ixelles.

y aller. Je ne pensais pas que j’allais encore faire un film après Les Plages d’Agnès. Je voulais faire des expositions seulement. Mais j’ai rencontré JR et, hop, c’était reparti. Il m’a emmenée dans son camion magique. De l’extérieur, il ressemble à un appareil photo. De l’intérieur, c’est une sorte de photomaton sauf que ce ne sont pas des photos d’identité qui en sortent mais des impressions gigantesques. Les gens peuvent les ramener gratuitement chez eux. Certains acceptent d’être sur une affiche.

Les gens sont beaux et sur les grandes affiches de JR ils sont magiques, » dit Varda en affichant un sourire radieux.

LE HASARD COMME ASSISTANT Varda et JR se sont rendus avec le camion magique dans des endroits qui les intriguaient, qu’on leur avait conseillés ou là où ils connaissaient déjà quelqu’un. Ensuite, c’est l'improvisation qui a pris le relais. JR : « Comme le dit très bien Agnès : le hasard est notre meilleur assistant. Dans le vieux quartier des mineurs, on a frappé à trois portes. À la première, personne n’a ouvert. À la seconde, ils nous ont dit que leur mère dormait et que, de toute façon, elle avait déjà raconté son histoire. À la troisième, on est tombés sur Jeanine ». Varda poursuit : « Jeanine était tellement extraordinaire. La manière dont elle parle des mineurs est un vrai cadeau. Quand on fait un film, il faut pouvoir anticiper ce qui va se produire. Il faut ouvrir les yeux et tendre l’oreille ».

Varda et JR ont fait connaissance, entre autres, avec un facteur de village, un agriculteur qui travaille seul huit-cent hectares de terre, une gardeuse de chèvres qui ne comprend pas pourquoi ses collègues brûlent les cornes de leurs bêtes et un homme qui, à un jour de la pension, craint le trou noir. « C’est essentiellement un documentaire sur les gens qu’on a rencontrés, » dit Varda. « Ça se faisait en faisant. On met les gens dans une situation dans laquelle ils se sentent capables d’imaginer, d’inventer, de dire des mots raffinés. Notre but est de mettre en valeur des gens bien aimés. » Le respect mutuel est grand. Varda appelle JR « un artiste culotté ». « Il a commencé par du graffiti. Il se faisait gronder partout. Il a vite fait

des beaux projets. L’idée d’agrandir les gens, c’est quand même généreux. Je le trouve rigolo et généreux. À Bruxelles, près du Palais de Justice, on est tombé, par hasard, sur des gens qui utilisent son procédé. Son idée donne des idées aux autres ». JR est « beaucoup plus issu du monde Varda que du monde Godard. » « J’étais assez halluciné de voir que cette petite dame âgée avait autant la pêche. Elle ne peut plus monter les escaliers mais elle ne fait pas son âge. Tu peux lui parler de tout. Les six premières semaines, je me suis fait marcher dessus. Après, j’ai compris qu’elle aime discuter. J’adore sa curiosité. Elle est en alerte constante. » Varda en fait son combat. « Le premier défaut des personnes âgées est qu’elles parlent toujours de leur santé. Parce qu’elles s’embêtent, parce qu’elles n’ont pas de sujets.

Elles sont seules, elles n’ont que la télé. Moi, je me suis donné une loi : ne jamais parler de ma santé, quoi qu’il arrive, et continuer à être vivante. » Visages Villages ne parle pas seulement des petits villages mais aussi de ses réalisateurs. JR et Varda commentent ce qu’ils font et se taquinent. « On a accepté d’être les marionnettes dans un film sérieux, » dit Varda. Cela prend des allures très personnelles quand JR assiste à un traitement médical des yeux de Varda et qu’il placarde un énorme gros plan de ses yeux et de ses pieds sur un wagon de marchandises. « Agnès possède un livre de moi chez elle, The Wrinkles of The City. Elle pouvait donc se douter que j’allais m’intéresser à ses rides, ses yeux, ses mains. Lorsqu’elle m’a parlé de sa maladie aux yeux, un second projet m’est venu : essayer de voir ce qu’elle voit encore, c’est une artiste qui maîtrise tellement l’image et qui a un regard si captivant sur le monde », dit JR. Et Varda d’ajouter : « Au départ, je voulais un documentaire. Je n’ai jamais pensé que ça allait devenir aussi le regard de JR sur moi. Mais c’est vrai que c’est un film sur le regard. On voit partout des yeux.

C’est une des raisons pour lesquelles j’insiste pour qu’il enlève ses lunettes noires. J’aime bien l’idée qu’il fasse voyager mes yeux et mes pieds avec ces wagons. En quelque sorte, j’ai accepté qu’il s’occupe de la représentation de mon vieillissement. C’est fait gentiment. »

PEAU DE CHIEN Passez ce paragraphe si vous êtes allergique aux spoilers. À la fin du film, Varda et JR ont rendez-vous avec Jean-Luc Godard. La figure de proue, obstinée, de la Nouvelle Vague fut pendant des années un ami intime de Varda et de son partenaire, parti trop tôt, Jacques Demy, réalisateur de classiques comme Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. Au moment suprême, Godard n’est pas chez lui, ils sont accueillis par une lettre énigmatique. « Je suis tombée sur une porte de bois, » dit Varda. « Je lui ai envoyé le DVD de Visages Villages mais ça reste silence

radio. Après, j’ai pensé que c’était peut-être mieux comme ça. Qu’est-ce qu’on se serait dit après tout ce temps ? », murmure Varda. Dans le film, la réalisatrice est tout de même affectée par l’attitude rustre de Godard. « On était tous surpris par sa phrase sibylline. Il disait qu’il pensait à Jacques et à moi. C’est une peau de chien mais il s’est passé quelque chose entre Godard et moi, quelque chose de mystique et de déconcertant. Ce qu’on a filmé est de la matière cinématographique. On retombe dans quelque chose. L’idée que quand on va vers les autres, on se prend parfois des baffes. On ne comprend jamais complètement l’autre. Cela fait partie du jeu.»

SANS MARQUES Visages Villages commence par remercier les plus de six cent personnes qui, ensemble, ont réuni via la plateforme KissKissBankBank les 50.000 euros permettant à Varda et à JR de prendre la route une première fois et de sonder le potentiel artistique de leur film. Ensuite, le documentaire a bénéficié d’un financement classique pour un budget d’un peu plus d’un million d’euros. JR : « Je n’ai monté qu’un seul film dans ma vie et c’était compliqué. Je me disais: avec Agnès Varda ça sera plus simple.

Mais non. Elle a autant de mal à trouver de l’argent que moi. Le cinéma est en crise. On finance surtout des comédies. On s’est fait retoquer partout. Du coup, on a fait appel aux gens. C’était une première pour tous les deux. » JR préfère le crowdfunding au sponsoring par

« Au début, je me suis fait marcher dessus mais après j'ai compris qu’Agnès aime discuter »

des grandes marques . « Je refuse que mon travail vende autre chose. Je suis un peu un ayatollah là-dessus. Un documentaire sur l’océan financé par Total qui le pollue? Un film écologique financé par des marques qui gâchent tout? Ni moi ni Agnès ne voulons nous retrouver là-dedans. Je vis depuis six ans en Amérique et le crowdfunding y est normal. Il est temps de bouger les mentalités pour que ça soit pareil dans le cinéma. Si l’on n’accepte pas le crowdfunding, des films comme Visages Villages ne seront possibles qu’avec le soutien des marques. Pour moi, c’est important de montrer que Visages Villages s’est fait sans marques mais avec l’aide des gens. » Varda croit en un cinéma de résistance. « Je dis qu’il faut résister à la paresse et à l’imbécillité.

Si on lutte contre cela, on a tellement d’occasions d’être émerveillé. Même si le monde vit dans un chaos assez grand et qu’il y a des malheurs énormes. On ne peut pas sauver tous les gens qui se noient, on ne peut pas leur donner à tous du travail et un abri. Mais les artistes peuvent trouver des formes et des images qui disent qu’on n’est pas dans l’oubli ou dans l’inconscience. » JR ne parle pas d’art engagé mais d’« art engageant ». « Je n’ai jamais soutenu aucune politique. L’acte d’aller dans la rue est déjà politique. Je n’ai pas besoin de défendre des idées personnelles en plus et qui n’engagent pas les gens que je colle. » Ni Varda ni JR ne furent reconnus pendant leur tour de France. Varda : « La plupart du temps les gens ne savent pas qui je suis ou ce que je fais. Il y en a, mais c’est une proportion minime. Si JR n’a pas fait de projets dans les alentours, ils ne le reconnaissent pas non plus.

Les Plages d’Agnès a été vu en France par 250 000 personnes. Un film qui te fait connaître nécessite au moins 500 000 entrées.

Je me considère une célébrité dans la marge. Je me sens bien dans la marge. Mes films sont montrés dans le monde entier et aimés par des gens qui aiment le cinéma particulier. » Visages Villages a bénéficié d’un accueil extrêmement chaleureux au Festival de Cannes et va tourner dans le monde entier. Ces dernières semaines, JR et Varda ont présenté leur film dans les lieux où ils ont tourné. Ils en sont donc à leur second tour de France. « On est un peu comme les gens du cirque: on fait notre cirque et on repart, » dit Varda en souriant.

De Brabantse traditie weer hip maken, mét vier mandolines? Ga er maar aan staan. MANdolinMAN, het mandolinekwartet rond Andries Boone, toont dat het kan en treedt op de folkdag van Brosella zelfs aan in XL-formaat!

I

n de Verenigde Staten zijn mandolinekwartetten gemeengoed. Het was altijd mijn droom, sinds ik mandoline speelde, om ook zelf zo’n kwartet op te richten,” zegt Andries Boone. “Toen mijn vader 70 jaar werd, heb ik als verrassing wat mensen bij elkaar gezocht om een album op te nemen en in de tuin van mijn vader een concertje te geven. Uit dat eenmalige project is MANdolinMAN gegroeid.”

Dat eerste album, Old tunes, dusted down uit 2011, bestond uit nummers die waren opgetekend door Andries’ vader, Hubert Boone – de Vlaamse Alan Lomax, zoals Jan De Smet van De Nieuwe Snaar hem ooit noemde. “Die vergelijking is wel toepasselijk, al is het dan natuurlijk op veel kleinere schaal. Mijn vader is in de jaren 1960, ’70

en ’80 nummers gaan optekenen bij fanfares en in archieven in de regio Midden-Brabant, tussen Leuven, Mechelen en Vilvoorde. De muzikanten speelden ze voor en hij noteerde,” vertelt de zoon. “De Brabantse fanfaremuziek zat vooral in een orale traditie. Als hij die nummers niet had opgetekend, dan waren ze verloren gegaan, al heeft hij ook wel een aantal partituren gevonden.”

Jij hebt je vaders werk een eigen muzikale invulling gegeven?

ANDRIES BOONE: Fanfaremuziek is heel functioneel: de plaatselijke fanfares moesten er op volksfeesten, trouwfeesten en bals voor zorgen dat er gedanst werd.

Op zich zijn dat heel frisse melodieën, maar op blazers valt dat wat tegen. Het

heel vrouwelijks. Momenteel zijn er slechts twee mandolinekwartetten in Europa. Het is een instrument met beperkingen, maar dat geldt net zo goed voor strijkers. Dat is ook één klank met lagen in. Zij hebben het voordeel dat ze een noot lang kunnen spelen, wij kunnen akkoorden spelen. Ik vind de mandoline wel een cool instrument. Megacool. Dankzij de film The broken circle breakdown is er in België even een mandoline-opstoot geweest, maar hoe lang gaat dat duren?

Op Unfolding the roots zijn jullie nog drastischer te werk gegaan?

BOONE: Klopt, ja. Na een zijsprong naar de bossanova op onze tweede plaat, hebben we op dit nieuwe album iets meer afstand genomen van de originele melodieën. Er zijn meer versieringen, het is allemaal meer gearrangeerd. Dat komt doordat we al langer samen spelen. Nu komen sommige nummers uit archieven, het zijn dus niet enkel nummers die mijn vader heeft opgetekend.

Waren hier dan zoveel fanfares?

BOONE: Ja, elk dorp had zijn fanfare. Door de verzuiling had elk dorp er zelfs meerdere: een socialistische, een vrijzinnige en een katholieke fanfare. Zo ontstond vanaf het begin van de negentiende eeuw een rijk oeuvre. Dat was onze volksmuziek.

De traditie van doedelzak en draailieren kwam vooral uit Frankrijk. De swingende violen zoals in Ierland hadden we niet. Wij hadden blazersmuziek tot vlak na de oorlog. Rond 1920 hebben vinyl en jukebox de fanfares verdrongen. De oorspronkelijke functie van fanfares, mensen doen dansen, was weg. De rock-’n-roll kwam in de plaats.

Is uw kwartet een poging om de Brabantse traditie weer naar de voorgrond te brengen?

BOONE: Ik ben in Brabant geboren en getogen, en onze fanfaretraditie is iets om trots op te zijn, maar het is niet mijn doel om haar in ere te herstellen. Als die melodieën niet sterk zouden zijn, zouden we ze niet spelen. Het blijft me verbazen dat we er op de laatste cd nog een aantal hebben kunnen uitvissen die echt sterk zijn. Je kan niet echt plaatsen waar de muziek vandaan komt, misschien ook door de mandoline. De polka bijvoorbeeld: als je die speelt als bluegrass, met dezelfde energie en schwung, dan zou geen kat geloven dat het iets uit Brabant is.

Maar toch, vier mandolines, is dat niet monotoon qua klank?

BOONE: De mandoline is mijn lievelingsin-

BOONE: We hebben twee muzikanten

uitgenodigd: jazzfluitist Stefan Bracke en bandoneon- en accordeonspeler Gwen Cresens, bekend van onder meer Orquesta Tanguedia. De muziek wordt nog meer opengetrokken. We hebben druk gerepeteerd en deden al een try-out in Antwerpen. Die mannen zijn keien in improvisatie en komen terecht in muziek die ze niet kennen. Het wordt boeiend!

Op Brosella grijpt hij zijn carte blanche aan om de grenzen van het accordeonspel op te rekken in een dialoog met muzikanten uit Portugal, Argentinië, Frankrijk en Ghana.

In de East Gipsy Band van meesterpianist József Balázs staan improvisatie en jazzelementen centraal.

Het Hongaarse orkest toerde al door Noord-Amerika en Europa met werk van bekende Franse, Duitse, Italiaanse, Hongaarse en Roma-componisten. Hun debuut werd in 2011 uitgebracht met de beroemde Amerikaanse muzikant, componist en arrangeur Tim Ries, die op Brosella met hen het podium zal delen.

binaire ritme maakt er nogal snel hoempamuziek van. Er werd gedanst, maar veel swing zat er niet in. Met de mandoline verandert dat. Wij kunnen het sprankelend maken en er meer schwung in brengen.

Het strafste van die fanfaremuziek zit toch in de melodieën, die maken dat ze tijdloos klinken. Op ons eerste album hebben we de hoofdmelodie en de tweede stem van de partituur behouden, maar de swing anders gelegd.

In de Kids Village kan je leren recycleren, toegankelijke kunst bewonderen, circusacts, theatervoorstellingen en concerten bijwonen, of in knutseltenten verdwijnen. Een aanrader is het verhaal van de Australische aboriginals dat Magic Wood dansend, musicerend en vertellend uit de doeken doet.

BRAVO BIG BAND 9/7, 15.00, THEATRE STAGE

Drie jaar lang werkte een stel jonge muzikanten met een passie voor grote jazzensembles onder de vleugels van het Brussels Jazz Orchestra en Jeugd en Muziek Brussel samen met grote (inter)nationale componisten en dirigenten. Met als resultaat een bigband met een frisse, moderne sound die op Brosella zijn eerste album, Another story, voorstelt.

BILL LAURANCE 9/7, 22.45, THEATRE STAGE

Als Bill Laurance geen belletje doet rinkelen, doet Snarky Puppy dat misschien wel? Het is onder de vlag van die experimentele afrojazzband uit New York dat Laurance wereldwijd bekendheid verwierf, maar de toetsenist, componist, producer en arrangeur componeert daarnaast ook voor films en reclame, werkt aan zijn elektronische duoproject The Fix en maakt muziek voor dansgezelschappen. Hij zakt af naar Brosella met het recente Aftersun onder de arm, een dansbare combi van wereldgrooves.

If you need a break, you can Bay-watch with a view of Brussel Bad/Bruxelles les Bains and its free sunsets and sunrises.

We sprongen uit de trein in Schaarbeek en landden er in de zachte, euh, modder.

ie ergens twee uur liggen heeft en niet wat ermee aangevangen: snuif eens wat groen op. Het Moeraske, een perfect tweetalig broek op de grens tussen de Schaarbeekse spoorlijnen en het Everse Goede Herderpark, leent zich daar prima toe, al moet je er wel de geur van hondendrollen bij nemen. Die bezige beestjes en hun baasjes hebben er blijkbaar hun favoriete uitje van gemaakt.

Wat niet wil zeggen dat je er met neusknijpers moet rondlopen.

Om er te raken kan je het station van Schaarbeek als hub gebruiken, waar je behalve met de trein ook met de bus, tram en Villo raakt.

Vandaar loop je via de Georges Rodenbach- naar de Zénobe Grammelaan. Werp ook even een blik op de Leeuwoprit, een vreemdsoortige brug uit de jaren 1920 die binnenkort gesloopt zal worden, maar tot die tijd een van

de favoriete Brusselse plekjes van Marc Didden blijft. Omhoog en links de Chaumontelstraat in, dan links naar beneden in de doodlopende Walckiersstraat. Het verwilderde Walckierspark aan je linkerzijde was oorspronkelijk een kasteelgoed met Engelse tuin waar je nog rocailles en kunstwatervallen kan vinden en tegenwoordig vooral zeldzame insecten, maar het is alleen toegankelijk met een gids. Geen nood, met 14 hectare biedt het aanpalende Moeraske ruim voldoende groen. Enkele volkstuintjes tonen je de weg, over het spekgladde houten brugje en je staat meteen midden in het ‘moeras’. Zo zie je ook hoe Brussel – Broekzele, of ‘nederzetting bij het moeras’ – en zijn zompige Zennevallei er vroeger bij moeten hebben gelegen. Het natuurgebied is eerder een langgerekte strook groen, het rangeerstation van Schaarbeek en de Everse verkavel-

woede hebben het met de jaren flink ingesnoerd. De treinen denderen voortdurend voorbij en enkele hoogspanningsmasten bezoedelen het gezicht, maar met de planten in volle bloei is de waan van de wildernis vrij aardig.

Leuk is de afwisseling tussen braakland en struweel, stevig beboste hellingen, droge en drassige stroken, en plassen en vijvers gevoed door de Kerkebeek.

Iemand met groene vingers vindt

er de zeldzame wilde rupsklaver en de gele moeraslis. Eén stap ver in het groen en je ziet meteen konijntjes wegspringen en vogels kwetteren. Een paar monniksparkieten hebben hoog in een es – of was het een wilde kastanje? – hun indrukwekkende nest gebouwd.

“Normaal zijn de struiken hier wat ingeperkt,” zegt een grijzende jogger die zich strijdlustig een weg baant door een doodlopend paadje vol bramen. “Maar ja, de natuur

overwint alles, hè,” zegt hij terwijl hij het bloed van zijn verscheurde armen dept. Nee, piranha’s zijn hier vooralsnog niet gespot, wel kikkers, levendbarende hagedissen, vleermuizen, bunzings en de allerschattigste eikelmuis. Beesten die wij er turfden: de woerd en zijn wederhelft, en een paar waterhoenders die rustig dobberden door het gifgroene eendenkroos.

Rond de poelen is de begroeiing woest, de modder zwart en

zompig en liggen de steile hellingen vol omgevallen bomen.

Met een beetje fantasie waan je je in Swamp thing van Alan Moore.

Het bord met doodskop en opschrift “Danger de mort. Accès interdit” ziet er nog akeliger uit omdat iemand er zijn kalasjnikov op leeg heeft geknald. Een andere onverlaat – of ie uit Halle kwam hebben we niet gecheckt – heeft een woordenboek Frans blaadje per blaadje uitgestrooid over de

hooggelegen grasstrook die je bereikt via een steil trapje. De vlakte mondt uit in het Moervospad, dat je uit de groene oase leidt.

De moervos is overigens een vrouwtjesvos. Die hebben we niet gespot, noch haar compagnon, de rekel, maar burchten zien we ze hier wel vrolijk bouwen.

Ooit waren er plannen om de snelweg A1 te verlengen door het Moeraske. Blij toe dat die doodsteek er niet is gekomen.

Tudu tudum, tudum, tudududududum, tudu duduuuum… With the advent of summer, Cinematek has decided to dust off the films of Blake Edwards. His repertoire was much greater than the Pink Panther films might lead you to suspect. — NIELS RUËLL

lake Edwards shouldn’t complain that he is primarily associated with the Pink Panther films that made Chief Inspector Clouseau (“Do you have a reum?”) a world-famous buffoon. He directed no fewer than eight of the films. But however cool the opening credits with the Pink Panther may have been, however memorable the tudu tudum melody by Henry Mancini, and however hilarious the slapstick and the improvisations of the ingenious Peter Sellers, by the end, the franchise ran thin. Cinematek are limiting themselves to the screening of The Pink Panther, which started the series in 1963, and its brilliant sequel A Shot in the Dark from one year later. There were times when Edwards and Sellers hated one another, but they realised that they had to combine their talents to ensure that the incompetent French inspector would become one of the unforgettable cinematic clowns.

But Edwards was not only pretty in pink. He made his breakthrough in 1961 with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the romantic comedy that made the delicious Audrey Hepburn a style icon. A year later, he surprised audiences with a darker film that unflinchingly showed the terrible effects of alcohol addiction: Days of Wine and Roses. In The Tamarind Seed, he skilfully mixed romance with spy elements. It is one of the many films in which he

directed his wife Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins). He also made strange films, like Darling Lili, an exorbitant musical that was considered an ego project, but since has garnered increasing attention and praise for Edwards’s masterful mise en scène and the mix of genres. The fact that neither he nor Sellers needed a pink panther to excel in cinema was demonstrated by The Party, a hilarious comedy about a hopelessly clumsy Indian who causes havoc at an exclusive Hollywood party. This film is unmissable for anyone who misses the days when comedies still had style.

Dans un hôpital de Brest, une pneumologue dévouée découvre qu’un médicament de confiance détient, en réalité, de graves effets secondaires pouvant entraîner la mort. Vous pensez surement que quelques coups de fil ont suffi à faire sortir le dangereux produit de la circulation ou, au moins, qu’une enquête en bonne et due forme a été exigée. Que nenni ! La courageuse doctoresse, davantage contrariée que soutenue par ses collègues et par les organes de contrôle défaillants, mène un combat contre le tout puissant géant pharmaceutique français qui s’en met plein les poches avec ce produit. La variante française de Erin Brockovich est incarnée par Sidse Babatt Knudsen, connue pour son rôle dans la série télé danoise Borgen. Ce choix étrange ne nuit en rien à la reconstitution cinématographique du scandale du Mediator qui a révélé les pratiques inquiétantes et punissables par la loi des laboratoires Servier. La Fille de Brest n'est pas le genre de film qui nécessite à tout prix d'être vu au cinéma. Mais on n'accusera pas Emmanuelle Bercot de manquer de dévouement. La réalisatrice de La tête haute multiplie les efforts pour rendre les nombreux faits et intrigues compréhensibles sans perdre en intensité et en tension. Est-ce suffisant ? (NR)

“Pas maar op, de stad neemt je op… en spuugt je net zo snel weer uit,” waarschuwt Thana. De uitgebluste architect is uitgekeken op Bangkok en het bijbehorende jachtige leven. De nieuwe generatie heeft hem ingehaald. Zijn vrouw gebruikt een vibrator en denkt uitsluitend aan shoppen. Je zou voor minder ontmoedigd raken en heimwee krijgen naar het idyllische dorp van je jeugd. Thana probeert uit de impasse te raken door de boel de boel te laten en zichzelf op te zadelen met een kolossale missie: de olifant Pop Aye terugbrengen naar de plek waar ze beiden vandaan komen.

Yep, Pop Aye is een roadmovie met een olifant. Origineel? Zoals in elke roadmovie maken ze onderweg van alles mee en ontmoeten ze mensen die ze niet rap zullen vergeten. Zoals meestal is niet de bestemming maar de reis zelf louterend. Vergeef ons dat we niet enthousiaster zijn. Pop Aye doet niemand kwaad. De beelden zijn mooi, het sentiment is net te verdragen, de humor is mild en je geloof in het nut van onthaasting en de goedheid van de mens wordt gesterkt. Maar de zoete, behaagzieke wereldfilm weet nooit echt te beklijven. De diepgang ontgaat ons. Onschuldig, maar helaas ook vrijblijvend. (NR)

In een ziekenhuis in Brest ontdekt een gedreven longarts dat een vertrouwd geneesmiddel ernstige bijwerkingen heeft. Eerder tegengewerkt dan gesteund door collega’s en controleorganen gaat de dokteres het gevecht aan met de machtige farmareus die geld verdient met het product. Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen) is een meerwaarde in deze gedramatiseerde reconstructie van het Mediator-schandaal. Helaas is een cinematografische sprankel die je verplicht om naar de bioscoop te hollen, niet te bespeuren.

L’architecte Thana en a assez de Bangkok et de son agitation. La nouvelle génération a eu raison de lui, sa femme utilise un vibromasseur et ne pense qu’à faire du shopping. Il tente de sortir de l’impasse en ramenant l’éléphant Pop Aye au village dont ils sont tous deux originaires. Comme dans tout road movie, ça n’est pas la destination qui compte mais le trajet, qui est cathartique. Les images sont belles, l’humour, bienveillant, et le sentimentalisme, tolérable. Si le film est innocent, il manque de prises de risque.

Unfortunately, however, we were unable to detect any hint of a cinematographic reason why you should see this film in the cinema.

Architect Thana has had enough of Bangkok and his hectic life. The new generation has overtaken him and his wife uses a vibrator and only thinks about shopping. He tries to get out of the impasse by returning the elephant Pop Aye to the village from which they both originally came. Like in all road movies, it is not the destination but the journey that is cathartic. The cinematography is beautiful, the humour is mild, and the sentimentality is just the right side of cheesy, but this coquettish world film is never compelling.

La galerie Gladstone propose un dialogue aléatoire entre vingt-cinq œuvres d’artistes tout en retenue iconoclaste avec vingt-cinq poèmes de Tristan Tzara. On peut y voir des collisions, des collusions parfois, de sens, d’émotions et de formes. — GILLES BECHET

’unité (ou le désordre) d’une exposition de groupe tient souvent à peu de chose. Le fil rouge de ce Pélamide, arrivé à bon port chez Gladstone, n’est pas visible au premier abord. Il tient dans les mots et les poèmes de Tristan Tzara. La curatrice, Lilou Vidal, a décidé de faire correspondre aléatoirement les vingt-cinq œuvres présentées aux vingt-cinq poèmes publiés par le poète dada en 1908. Il ne faut pas y chercher d’illustration directe mais plutôt un réseau de significations aléatoires, d’associations d’idées, un jeu de cadavre exquis entre des mots, des images et des objets qui n’auraient jamais dû se rencontrer.

Les œuvres exposées largement puisées parmi les artistes de la galerie s’y prêtent bien. Elles ont en commun une étrangeté diffuse, un semblant de mélancolie et comme des pelotes de sens et d’émotions cachées qui ne demandent qu’à être

déroulées. On est accueilli par le lit de Marianne Berenhaut. Un matelas de paille grossière soutenant des sphères de verre fragiles et fatiguées. Dans le poème correspondant, on peut lire: « les flammes éponges de verre les paillasses blessures paillasses ». Presque en face, toise l’Hermaphrodite souverain de Pierre Klossowski, le regard mélancolique, les jambes écartées « que je sois dieu sans importance ou colibri - ou bien le fœtus de ma servante en souffrance », écrit Tzara.

On n’est évidemment pas obligé de se plonger dans le recueil de poèmes mis à la disposition du visiteur. On peut se laisser dériver avec les courants, passer devant le beau dessin de Jamie Cameron, un vague hibou dans un halo irisé, contourner les collants rembourrés de Sarah Lucas, lovés comme un animal craintif, se rapprocher de la chaise à hermine de Victor Man. À l’étage, encore bien des choses, un ironique h’m de Walter Swennen, une tache émouvante de Marisa Merz où quelques débris dessinent un visage. « Les os sont aussi des cuillères pour ton âme », susurre Tzara. Gabriel Kuri rassemble des coquillages et des mégots de cigarette hypertrophiés. Les oreilles et la bouche. En manque d’idées, on peut se tourner vers le seau d’Ana Jotta et c’est la lumière. Il ne faut surtout pas s’en aller sans demander de jeter un coup d'œil aux livres de collages de Marianne Berenhaut conservés dans le bureau. Dans un esprit très dada, elle associe sur la page blanche des bouts de crayons, des clous, des morceaux de bois, de tissus et des canettes écrasées. Des poèmes sans mots.

GASTON Turan and Lucy Ucar spent ten years making a name for themselves with Gou, their restaurant in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe/Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, which specialised in bistro food. That was until Turan, mad about food, came up with the idea of making artisanal ice cream, a passion of his since childhood. Disillusioned by an inscrutable market and industrial methods of production (the many texturisers and other processed additives) used by seven out of ten ice cream-makers, this chef decided to restore this wonderful product to its former glory. With that in mind, he took over the legendary Brussels outlet Comus & Gasterea and decided to put into practice there an approach in keeping with today’s world. As well as undergoing training in Italy and at Lenôtre in Paris, he pulled out all the stops and called in the self-taught interior designer Lionel Jadot – the man who designed the decor for Marc Veyrat’s restaurant in the French capital. The

result is a space that opens onto a lab in which you can watch the ice cream being churned every day. What makes it special is the range of top-quality ingredients – including organic milk from the Ardennes, which is used to create some of the flavours, as well as cane sugar and agave syrup in place of the usual refined powder. We love the vanilla mixed with caramel and dotted with pecans – not unlike a certain well-known “cookies & cream” – and the banana with freshly-roasted sesame seeds, the “yoghurt and honey”, and the Iranian pistachio made with an excellent homemade mix.

NANOUK ICE Christine Waignein’s well-thought-out project, Nanouk Ice, is now in its fourth summer. After starting out in the financial sector, this dynamic forty-something turned her life upside down to “do something cooperative.” She was absolutely determined to revive the frisko, that

ice cream on a stick that we all remember fondly from childhood…which she offers in two different formats. After originally deciding to name her concept “Friskot”, an unmistakably Belgian play on words, she was disappointed to discover that “frisko” was already a registered trademark. Turning the pages of a Walloon dictionary, this Dutch-speaking entrepreneur came across the word nanouk, defined as a “stick of ice-cream with chocolate.” She then set about developing a natural approach using unprocessed natural ingredients, many of which she sources from the organic morning market in Mechelen. Her frozen creations include sorbets and ice creams in classic flavours – try the unmissable coffee flavour developed with the help of Kaffabar, the gold standard of coffee places, located on place Rouppeplein – and in more original formulas such as pineapple-mojito with fresh mint and lucuma, a Peruvian fruit that is seldom seen in this part of the world.

Nanouk Ice

MELLOW KITCHEN Since 2013, foodies have been finding their way to the “pink ball”. The pink ball? A sort of foodtruck – or more accurately a “trailer” shaped like a sphere. This appetising UFO was the invention of Noémie, a 30-year-old foodie whose speciality is “froyo”, frozen yoghurt.

Having become popular in Brussels, Mellow – the actual name of the concept – has now taken up a more permanent residence on Londenplein/place de Londres in a space that was formerly a chemist’s shop. We are happy to report that the concept has lost none of its appeal. Achieved with the help of an upcycled decor that brings old furniture back to life, the overall effect is a great success. We love their take on frozen yoghurt, which involves flavours that are quite lively, partly due to being a little more tart than usual. The frozen yoghurt is served with toppings from which you can choose as many as you like – not to be missed are the neuzeke/cuberdon topping and the one made with large chunks of strawberry. On Sundays, the place offers a brunch consisting entirely of pancakes, both sweet and savoury.

BELICIA At first glance, nothing sets Belicia apart from any other ice cream place. But this establishment, whose terrasse opens onto place Colignonplein, is run by a genuine enthusiast.

The owner is an agricultural engineer converted into an evangelist for ice cream. The man works like a slave, every day, from dusk till dawn. He believes in an artisanal approach to ice cream. As well as the classics – the excellent vanilla, for example, a flavour which always reveals the quality of an ice cream-maker – you can find more original creations which vary according to the seasons and his mood. The dairy ice cream with fruits-of-the-forest yoghurt is an absolute must. Equally unmissable are the neuzeke/cuberdon version and one inspired by Ferrero Rocher.

IL MONELLO In Italian, a monello is a “kid” or an “urchin”, which is just what a titi or a poulbot is in Paris.

The name was not chosen at random, as there is something of the rebellious spirit of the street urchin about the place. The ice cream, served on a wafer, adheres to the rules of the gelateria, making you feel like you are in Italy.

The owners were trained by Francesco Suppa, a renowned master ice cream-maker. So typical flavours like stracciatella and gianduja are present, as are those deliciously creamy textures. We also enjoyed the warm reception from brother and sister Roberta and Alessandro, as well as the little regional nibbles on offer: arancini (risotto balls typical of southern Italy) and generous lemon- and chocolate-flavoured cakes of a kind you won’t find the equal of in this part of the world.
