GEEF HEM EEN NIEUWE RUIKER BLOEMEN. Op het drie jaar oude Wild flowers zat het

muzikale countryrockkorset rond Vanparys’ songs iets te strak. Vandaag klinkt hij alsof hij samen met Adam Granduciel van The War On Drugs een roadtrip door de Midwest heeft gemaakt: weids, met de wind in de haren.

WATCH OUT FOR THE NEW NEIL! On his good days, Houck sounds just as fragile as Neil Young on Tonight’s the Night – think plastic palm trees, painfully honest songs, and a lot of tequila. And yes, that’s a compliment.

BIXIGA : C’est le nom du quartier à São Paulo où le groupe est né et où leurs premiers albums ont été enregistrés. 70 est un clin d’œil au groupe pionnier de l’afrobeat, Africa 70 de Fela Kuti. Ensemble, ils créent un afrobeat progressif, une fusion de sonorités afro-brésiliennes avec du jazz, du funk, des pincées de dub, d’électro et de cumbia.

CASSE TÊTE ? Ça ne devrait pas l’être. Ce groupe groove comme un train, générant une transe rythmique menée pas une section de cuivres énergisante, n’ayant qu’un but : faire bouger la piste de danse. Leur quatrième album Quebra Cabeça sort en octobre sur le label world en vogue, Glitterbeat Records. Pour Bixiga 70, l’Afrique sera toujours la racine, et le Brésil, sa fleur vibrante.

EURO-VISION, WORLD HERITAGE? Ten years after his death, the world has not forgotten Marc Moulin (photo). His good friend, jazz guitarist Philip Catherine, is kicking off this tribute evening with a quintet and compositions from his first solo album Stream, to which Moulin contributed four tracks in 1971.

OLD DREAMS, NEW PLANETS! Now that fusion jazz, and especially Placebo’s repertoire, are enjoying a revival and it is still wonderful to hum along to Telex’s vintage electronica skills, the current jazz jugglers in STUFF. seem to be the ideal seconds to add an extra dash of 2018 to an already groundbreaking oeuvre.

Vergeet die naar gindse horizon turende gitaren, tussen weemoed en euforie kamperende tropenpop en in lome trap gelooide hiphop: dit najaar hoort u te stuiteren op de wereldbeats van wervelwind Ammar 808. — TOM ZONDERMAN Ammar 808 is de boreling van Sofyann Ben Youssef, een Tunesische producer en musicoloog die tien jaar geleden na wat omzwervingen in Brussel zijn anker uitwierp. In zijn reiskoffer zat een Roland TR-808, een iconische drummachine die begin jaren 1980 de (elektronische) popmuziek revolutionaliseerde.

Denk aan de futuristische, onheilspellende flipperkastbeats van Afrika Bambaataa’s ‘Planet Rock’, de hijgerige robotpop van The Egyptian Lovers ‘Egypt, Egypt’ of ‘Your love’ van wijlen Frankie Knuckles. Sofyann Ben Youssef laat zijn elektronische beatbraker een innige paringsdans dansen met het opzwepende klankenarsenaal van de Maghreb.

Daarvoor zorgen bezwerende blaasinstrumenten als de zukra, een doedelzak uit Libië, en de gasba, een Marokkaanse fluit, de typische

euforische gezangen, de repetitieve percussie en de diepe grommen van de gimbri, de driesnarige luit die de Noord-Afrikaanse muziek in een heksenketel verandert. Kortom, geen betere manier om de traditie met het nu te verbinden.

Terwijl anderen muren bouwen, doorbreekt Sofyann Ben Youssef grenzen en legt nieuwe verbindingen. Het debuut van Ammar 808 heet The Maghreb United, een titel die verwijst naar de muzikanten die hij rond zich heeft verzameld: zanger Cheb Hassen Tej uit Tunesië, Sofiane Saidi uit Algerije, die eerder al samenwerkte met de Brusselse zangeres met Egyptische roots Natacha Atlas, en Mehdi Nassouli uit Marokko, die al op de loonlijst stond van de Malinese revelatie Fatoumata Diawara en bij Ammar 808 onder meer de gimbri mag beroeren.

Een beetje muziekliefhebber luistert vandaag zonder oorkleppen. Ammar 808 mocht begin dit jaar de Ancienne Belgique op temperatuur brengen voor James Holden & The Animal Spirits. Net als de tot de gnawa bekeerde Brit, mikken Sofyann Ben Youssef en zijn handlangers op trance. Een intense, hypnotiserende trip waarbij je je ogen kan sluiten en wegdromen, maar meer nog een waarbij je samen met al dan niet gelijkgezinden de ziel uit je lijf kan dansen terwijl de wereld daarbuiten verder opbrandt. U zat met een duiveltje op de schouder en u wist nog niet hoe u hem de laan kon uitsturen? Laat je eens goed gaan bij Ammar 808.

FILS À PAPA? That’s right, Femi is Fela Kuti’s son – but Fela’s sons have far more talent than the sons of that other superstar of the 1970s, Bob Marley.

Femi is Fela’s oldest son, and by 1986 he had already left his father’s orchestra to go his own way with The Positive Force.

ONE LOVE? Almost. Femi’s new album is entitled One People One World, and its message of social engagement and world improvement is served on a bed of delicious Afrobeat swathed in his characteristically soft voice.

Hasselhorn kroonde zich dit jaar tot winnaar van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd voor zang. Voor zijn ererondje komt hij nu terug naar Bozar, waar het voor hem allemaal begon.

NO HASSLE FOR HASSEL: Niet minder dan 23 liederen heeft de Duitse bariton voor de boeg. Een stevig programma van twee uur muziek. Blijf weg als je een afkeer hebt van Teutoonse romantiek, want met zeven keer Schubert, vier keer Brahms, zeven keer Schumann en vijf keer Wolf is er geen ontkomen aan.

MISS AMERICANA : Voix iconique de l’Amérique underground, Chan Marshall met tout son cœur dans les chansons de Cat Power.

Folk, rock, blues ou soul, sa musique est toujours belle à pleurer.

MISS WORLD : Prévu pour l’automne, l’album Wanderer annonce un véritable retour aux sources : une œuvre délicate, poignante, imaginée à l’écart des productions mastoc. Bordé de beautés mélancoliques, le disque enferme une ballade en compagnie de la copine Lana Del Rey, quelques chansons fragiles et une grâce retrouvée. La classe internationale.

HOE GOED IS UW THAIS? Bassiste Laura Lee, gitarist Mark Speer en drummer Donald Ray Johnson komen uit Texas en waren de voorbije festivalzomer het onwaarschijnlijkste snoepje du jour. Ze zien eruit als Egyptenaren die wat koelte krijgen toegewuifd met een vers geplukt palmblad, klinken als de soundtrack van een film die Quentin Tarantino vergat te maken, houden zowel van ninetieshiphop als Perzische pop, en eren met hun naam de Thaise psychrockscene van de sixties – hij betekent zoveel als “motor vlieg”, en ja, voor ons is dat ook Chinees.

GOOD VIBES À GOGO: The universe smiles upon you heette het debuut van Khruangbin, begin dit jaar bezorgden ze de zomer een vroeggeboorte met opvolger Con todo el mundo. Niets dan zonnige vibes dus, die het trio voornamelijk met instrumentale liedjes over ons heen sprenkelt. Als de vallende bladeren je dit najaar weer flink bij de cojones hebben, weet je dus waar naartoe.

BONNE ANNÉE ! Depuis la sortie du disque For Emma, Forever Ago, Justin Vernon connaît un succès exponentiel sous le bonnet de Bon Iver. Dix ans après la sortie de son album culte, l’artiste américain annonce son passage à Forest National.

Mais le concert est annulé. Douze mois plus tard, Bruxelles a de nouveau rencard avec le musicien. Cette fois, c’est la bonne.

BONNE SANTÉ ! Parti des contrées boisées de la musique folk, Bon Iver s’est inventé un futur électro-pop, éthéré et passionnant. En forme olympique, l’artiste monte enfin sur scène pour défendre les chansons de son dernier album, l’excellent 22, A Million.

LE JAMES BLAKE FRANÇAIS : Bien que comparé à Rhye et The xx, c’est le nom du chanteur-compositeur-producteur anglais qui surgit à tous les coups lorsqu’il est question de ce Parisien prometteur.

Mais mis à part son style sobre contemporain, c’est surtout la puissance de sa voix soul et son phrasé qui subliment ses morceaux.

AUTOMNE ARDENT : La sortie de son premier EP Fading Away avec son single au refrain contagieux Cherry Lipstick et le sensuel The Love nous font espérer le meilleur pour The Love Album, un premier album à part entière qui sort le 21 septembre.

PUNKS NOT DEAD? Has Brexit made a new punk wave wash over England? After, amongst others, Sleaford Mods and Shame, IDLES are also kicking up a racket across the Channel: the five barking dogs from Bristol did that with a lot of bravura on last year’s Brutalism, and will soon repeat their tour de force on their second album Joy as an Act of Resistance. But singer Joe Talbot does not spit on the system gratuitously: he also knocks you down with brutally honest lyrics about his alcohol addiction, his sick mother, and the death of his new-born daughter.

BLACK STAR ? Biberonné à De La Soul, Talib Kweli a grandi à Brooklyn. C’est là qu’il forme le duo Black Star aux côtés de son pote Mos Def. Là aussi qu’il démarre sa carrière solo avec l’aide de Kanye West.

BLACK POWER ! Depuis, Talib Kweli empile les albums en malaxant les codes d’un hip-hop afro-centré et conscient. L’an dernier, l’activiste s’est encore distingué avec Radio Silence, album enregistré en compagnie de Bilal, Anderson .Paak, Kaytranada ou Robert Glasper. Du beau monde pour un mec bien.

No, Christine transcends national and linguistic borders. It’s the story of her life. — TOM PEETERS Her bilingualism is of course particularly interesting from the perspective of her career. Starting in 2014, it rose like a comet, when her album debut was not only well-received in France, but in the English-speaking world too. Héloïse “Christine” Letissier was actually raised with an interest in language. Her father taught English literature at the University of Nantes and her mother taught French and Latin at secondary school. Nevertheless, as a young girl, she did not think that she was entirely normal. She judged herself to be too ugly and too rude. She was told not to expect too much from life and she isolated herself. In 2010, a broken heart led her to exchange Paris for London, where she ran into three drag queens in a nightclub in Soho. “I was alone, and they came to ask me whether everything was okay,” Letissier told Channel 4. “No, I told them honestly, and so they decided to take care of this little insecure French girl.”

The Queens are thus not her back-up band, but a tribute to these three “mother figures” who got her life back on the right track. Héloïse became far more self-conscious. Christine became her androgynous and pansexual alter-ego. And yet it was a great surprise that after a few less successful EPs following the hit “Christine” (“Tilted” to English-speakers), Christine and the Queens became a phenomenon and that her album debut Chaleur humaine sold 1.3 million copies worldwide. That album is about her lonely teenaged years during which she had a very complicated relationship with herself and her body.

In Belgium too, both in Flanders and Wallonia, that album made it all the way to the top spot on the album charts.

Expectations for the next album were thus very high.

A dozen new tracks sketches the transformation from an insecure, shy girl to a self-confident young thirty-year-old woman. “I could have taken a fancy producer in LA and made pop shit on my second album, but no. I wanted to make my music even more personal,” she says in the press release for the occasionally very funky sounding Chris. “The album title captures an urge to shed something, as though I literally had to throw off a harness to become even more penetrating.”

KINDEREN IN DE SNOEPWINKEL? Dat ze zichzelf écht in een snoepwinkel dropten voor de clip van hun liedje ‘Suikerbeat’, gaf natuurlijk een voorzetje. Maar zo voelt het ook écht: verwante zielen toetsenist Fulco Ottervanger (De Beren Gieren, Stadt) en slagwerker Lander Gyselinck (STUFF., LABTrio) doen hun stinkende goesting met geflipte elektronica, uit de haak hangende breakbeats en kosmische jazz. Dit jaar ook vereeuwigd met hun eerste boreling Duizeldorp.

DOE DE 360 °! “Kunnen jullie dan heel traag rond het podium draaien?” vroeg Ottervanger aan zijn toehoorders op Pukkelpop. Het duo had zich centraal in de Castello opgesteld, maar anders dan bij U2 draaide hun opstelling niet rond. Dus vroegen ze aan het publiek om maar zelf in rondjes te cirkelen. De processie op breakbeats was net zo geflipt als hun muziek.

Het leek gekkenwerk, maar was in wezen maatschappijkritiek, die volgens de KVS en De Munt nog steeds relevant is.

IT’S FASCINATING: Every season, CITY:LAND will be based at a different specific location. The first edition, during the week before the local elections, will be set on and around the Muntplein/place de la Monnaie: once a turbulent location in Belgium’s political history, now a crossroads of diverse mercantile, social, and cultural interaction. L’année dernière, le public découvrait avec émerveillement le théâtre novateur d’Ossama Halal. L’artiste syrien est de retour avec The Other Side of the Garden.

Ou quand les contes pour enfants deviennent de sombres réalités. — SOPHIE SOUKIAS Sois. « Koon », en arabe. « Sois heureux, sois fort, sois loyal (…). Sois toi-même ». Fidèle à son injonction fondatrice, la compagnie Koon, créée en 2002 à Damas par Ossama Halal, n’a jamais cessé d’être, d’incarner un théâtre intensément vivant, un théâtre où l’art et la vie se fondent et se confondent dans les espoirs et dans la douleur.

Au début du nouveau millénaire, dans la Syrie du clan Assad où le théâtre indépendant est mis hors d’état de subvertir, le Koon Theater Group est le premier à se livrer à une performance urbaine, à se produire en dehors des espaces conventionnels (sur les toits des immeubles, dans les tunnels,…) « pour établir une relation plus vitale et plus spontanée avec le public ».

Lorsqu’en 2011, les rêves de liberté syriens tournent au cauchemar, le théâtre vivant de la troupe Koon se

met à traduire les réalités tragiques de ses membres et de leur entourage.

Créer et s’exprimer sont autant de moyens de fortune pour combattre une douleur lancinante que rien ne semble vouloir calmer.

Depuis sa nouvelle base à Beyrouth, la troupe d’Ossama Halal, composée d’artistes syriens, libanais et français, évoque les chagrins du Proche-Orient et de l’humanité entière à travers des performances hybrides où les disciplines (danse, théâtre, musique live,...) se répondent et résistent ensemble.

Le sombre et haletant Above Zero se basait sur un poème de Bertolt Brecht pour explorer les effets insoupçonnés de la guerre et de l’enfermement sur les comportements humains. « Le bourreau et la victime sont en chacun de nous », nous disait Ossama Halal.

Dans sa nouvelle création The Other

Side of the Garden, c’est le conte d’Andersen The Story of a Mother qui libère la parole, les sons et les mouvements des artistes. Le chagrin et l’insoutenable sentiment d’impuissance d’une mère, prête à tout pour sortir son fils du jardin des morts, font vivement écho aux pertes vécues par chacun des performeurs. À la confrontation directe, Halal oppose un langage de la violence symbolique fait de tableaux puissants et imagés aux références poétiques, philosophiques et politiques. Un théâtre d’autant plus novateur qu’il exclue rôles principaux et de genre. « Tous les acteurs jouent le rôle de la mère, les femmes et les hommes ». On ne peut faire plus universel.

“Een boegbeeld van de Vlaamse dans,” zo omschreef De Volkskrant choreografe en danseres Lisbeth Gruwez toen zij met haar voorstelling The sea within in première ging in Nederland. Daar is geen woord van gelogen. — MICHAËL BELLON Het is ondertussen alweer een hele tijd geleden sinds Lisbeth Gruwez werd gepresenteerd als danseres en muze van Jan Fabre. We rakelen dat stukje geschiedenis voor de laatste keer op: nadat ze wegens iets te eigenzinnig maar een jaartje aan P.A.R.T.S. had gestudeerd, begon haar professionele carrière bij Wim Vandekeybus’ gezelschap Ultima Vez. Vanaf 1999 werkt ze samen met Jan Fabre voor de voorstellingen As long as the world needs a warrior’s soul, Je suis sang en de befaamde solo Quando l’uomo principale è una donna. Zo werd ze een van Fabres befaamde ‘krijgers van de schoonheid’.

Een krijger is Gruwez nog steeds, maar al in 2007 creëerde ze samen met geluidskunstenaar Maarten Van Cauwenberghe haar eigen Voetvolk – een dansgezelschap met een wisselende “community van mensen

die hun lijf mee in de strijd willen gooien.” De artistieke symbiose met Van Cauwenberghe is nagenoeg totaal: “Wij zijn bijna broer en zus.

We maken alles ook echt samen.

Voor we aan iets nieuws beginnen, luisteren we samen naar muziek om de richting te bepalen. Daarna gaat hij met de computer aan de slag en zit hij als een dj in de repetitieruimte.” Het geluidsontwerp en de choreografie bepalen dus elkaar. Dat heeft intussen meer dan tien creaties opgeleverd, waaronder de veelgeprezen Triptiek van het extatische lichaam, bestaande uit It’s going to get worse and worse, my friend, AH/HA en We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay. Respectievelijk angst, de lach en de ademhaling waren in die triptiek uitgangspunten voor uitputtende, radicale choreografieën, die schrijver Peter Verhelst lieten optekenen dat Gruwez een atoom-

bom was.

Haar nieuwste stuk The sea within werd niet alleen in Nederland goed ontvangen, maar gooide ook bij ons op Theater Aan Zee hoge ogen. Toch lijkt Gruwez met deze zoveelste voltreffer een wat andere weg in te zijn geslagen. Voor het eerst staat ze niet zelf op het podium, maar creëerde ze een groepschoreografie voor elf danseressen. De bewegingstaal lijkt organischer, spiritueler en ronder dan het meer geprogrammeerde, bevreemdende en hoekige materiaal van de vorige stukken. Als een parelvisser duikt Gruwez beelden, sferen en associaties op uit zee en vervloeit het individu in de kolkende massa, zonder erin kopje-onder te gaan.

Does Donald Trump bring out the best in Spike Lee? The militant director’s new film BlacKkKlansman is a pointed and entertaining denunciation of the racism and the hate of the America First America. — NIELS RUËLL Spike Lee, the scourge of white Hollywood, has not had a moment’s rest over the past few years. He has directed music videos, documentaries, one-man shows, and a Netflix show based on She's Gotta Have It, his black and white film about an African American artist from Brooklyn who has three lovers. The original 1986 film brought him considerable notoriety. Film lovers, however, have had to wait. Films like Chi-Raq (2015) and Miracle at St. Anna (2008) were not released here.

Oldboy (2013) was an unnecessary remake of a violent Korean classic.

For his better films we have to go all the way back to Inside Man (2006) and 25th Hour (2002). And for his even better, socio-critical films (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X), we have to go much further back.

In short, it was high time for another cinematic foray. With BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee is again showing himself to be a film director who is impossible to ignore and who has a clear and resounding message. The Cannes Film Festival awarded it the Grand Prix, the most important prize after the Golden Palm.

The mocking, relevant, and rockhard BlacKkKlansman is the improbable but true story of Ron Stallworth. In the film version, he’s a cool African American police officer who casually infiltrates a division of the Ku Klux Klan in the racist 1970s and becomes good friends with the KKK leader David Duke over the telephone. Duke is an acquaintance of Donald Trump who was already championing America First inappropriately in the 1970s.

Lee’s film is very entertaining, but he also rubs salt into an open, festering wound. He not only indicts the racism, idiocy, and danger of the acolytes of white supremacy forty years ago. He lets fly at Hollywood classics that endorse dubious images of African Americans and shows the contemporary relevance of his subject matter with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer: with a president who refuses to take sides when far-right extremists commit deadly attacks against counter-protestors in Charlottesville. Spike Lee doesn’t pull any punches. But unfortunately, that’s absolutely necessary right now.

L’ÉQUIPAGE : Le réalisateur Damien Chazelle s’est fait un nom avec Whiplash et La La Land. Il doit aimer les grands écarts parce que First Man est une aventure spatiale. Et pas n’importe laquelle puisqu’il s'agit de l’aventure spatiale la plus célèbre de l’histoire de l’humanité : la mission Apollo 11 qui a fait de l’astronaute Neil Armstrong le premier homme à marcher sur la Lune et de Buzz Aldrin, le second. Ryan Gosling rafle les honneurs, assisté de Kyle Chandler et Claire Foy (The Crown).

LA RUÉE VERS LE CINÉMA : Un film excitant sur l’atterrissage sur la Lune ? Il faut remonter à 1902 et Le Voyage dans La Lune de Georges Méliès. Chazelle a choisi de ne pas souligner le triomphe mais plutôt l’angoisse, l’insécurité, les dangers et les catastrophes qui précèdent le « grand pas pour l’humanité ».

SOLDAT DU SEPTIÈME ART : Le Britannico-Polonais Pawel Pawlikowski est au mieux de sa forme. Ida, une ode au cinéma se déroulant dans la Pologne post-holocauste, lui a valu un Oscar. Le Festival de Cannes l’a couronné meilleur réalisateur pour Cold War. CHAUDEMENT RECOMMANDÉ : L’amour en temps de Guerre Froide, ça nous fait fondre.

Surtout quand il est aussi ardent et tragique que dans Cold War, avec une photographie sublime transcendée par des notes jazz et une folk polonaise magistrales.

SPOT ON Timothée Chalamet

Meer dan een mooie jongen NL

Sinds zijn zielroerende vertolking in Call me by your name staat Timothée Chalamet bekend als hét grote nieuwe talent. De bevestiging zou er met dank aan een Belg snel kunnen komen. — NIELS RUËLL “Hij is Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio: een hartenbreker en een groot acteertalent. Iedereen zal versteld staan van wat er van hem wordt – behalve ik. Ik heb altijd geweten dat hij een eenhoorn is.” Dat zegt geen verliefde puber op een fansite over Timothée Chalamet, maar actrice en regisseuse Greta Gerwig. Zij gaf hem de rol van de dromerige jongen bij wie het hoofdpersonage uit Lady Bird haar maagdelijkheid wil verliezen.

Chalamet kreeg begin dit jaar wel meer zaken te horen en te lezen waar hij alleen maar rood van kon aanlopen. Hij zou een wonderboy zijn, de nieuwe DiCaprio, een pinp-up voor millennials. De fantasie is niet vanzelf op hol geslagen. De drietalige, 22-jarige New Yorker die zijn zomers doorbracht bij zijn Franse grootouders heeft een

engelengezicht met ogen om in weg te dromen en kan een aardig stukje acteren. Zonder zijn hypersensitieve vertolking zou Call me by your name nooit zo’n fenomeen geworden zijn.

In die film van de Italiaan Luca Guadagnino speelt hij een jongeman die voor het eerst van de liefde proeft met alle intense, verwarrende, koortsige en pijnlijke gevoelens die daarbij horen. De complexe, emotionele storm die André Aciman in zijn gelijknamige boek beschrijft, weet Chalamet uit te drukken zonder dat er veel woorden aan te pas komen. Die bravoure leverde hem een nominatie voor de Oscar voor beste acteur op. Het was van Mickey Rooney in 1944 geleden dat zo’n jonge acteur die eer te beurt viel.

De uitdaging is nu om zijn talent te bevestigen. De eerste grote testcase wordt Beautiful boy, het Ameri-

kaanse regiedebuut van Felix Van Groeningen. De Belgische regisseur van gewaardeerde films als De helaasheid der dingen en The broken circle breakdown laat Chalamet een jongeman spelen die de strijd tegen een alsmaar lelijkere drugsverslaving verliest tot wanhoop van zijn vader, een rol voor Steve Carell (Foxcatcher).

De trailer was amper online of er werd al gepraat over een tweede opeenvolgende Oscar-nominatie.

David Michôd (The rover, Animal kingdom), Greta Gerwig en Denis Villeneuve (Blade runner 2049, Sicario) wachtten niet af en contracteerden de mooie jongen voor hun volgende films. Ook een vervolg op Call me by your name zit in de pijplijn.

Er is een reële kans op chalamania.

HAIL TO THE THIEF: This time, the dreamy horror fairy-tale is being directed by Luca Guadagnino, the Italian who showed us great work in Io sono l’amore and Call Me by Your Name. His muse, the always intriguing Tilda Swinton, is starring, and none other than Thom Yorke of Radiohead is providing the soundtrack.

MEET THE AUTHOR : S’il est devenu écrivain, c’est d’abord et surtout parce qu’il est un lecteur insatiable et un spectateur infatigable de films et séries. Il ne se fera pas prier pour parler de ses habitudes de lecture, de ses livres cultes et de la place des lecteurs dans son travail.

In Project deburkanisation liet Rachida Lamrabet een stem weerklinken van onder een nikab.

In haar nieuwe roman Vertel het iemand galmen opnieuw woorden van een stemloze. — KURT SNOEKX “U wil alles zien, alles doorgronden, mijn lichaam moet doorzichtig zijn,” spreekt een in nikab gehulde stem in Project deburkanisation. Haar “lichaam als een duister continent” weert zich tegen de ontsluiering, wil vrij zijn om niet gezien te worden.

Die kortfilm van vijf minuten was voor Rachida Lamrabet – zelf niet voor de boerka of het boerkaverbod – een manier om een debat aan te zwengelen over vrijheid en privacy, maar draaide uit op hysterische reacties in politiek en media, die uiteindelijk leidden tot haar ontslag als juriste bij Unia, het Interfederaal Gelijkekansencentrum. “Ik wilde kunst maken en werd plots een boerkahoer genoemd,” vertelde de schrijfster, die in 2007 de Nederlandse letteren binnenstormde met de roman Vrouwland (Vlaamse Debuutprijs) en een jaar later met Een kind van God de BNG Nieuwe Literatuurprijs won, daarover vorig jaar in Humo. In tien jaar had ze blijkbaar enkele woorden te veel geuit.

Het is die paradox die Project deburkanisation blootlegt. De film liet de stem horen van iemand die in onze ogen tot stille gehoorzaamheid is veroordeeld. Maar eenmaal ze haar stem verheft, kritisch, wordt haar het zwijgen weer opgelegd. ‘Spreek verdrukte’ wordt dan: Zwijg, allochtoon! – zoals het priemende essay heet dat Rachida Lamrabet na de Unia-hetze schreef.

Met Vertel het iemand haalt ze opnieuw een vergeten stem naar het heden: een Marokkaanse jongen wordt tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog naar het Franse front gestuurd en ziet daar zijn burgerplicht beloond met het recht om vooral te zwijgen.

Rachida Lamrabet blijft gelukkig haar stem verheffen. “Het is belangrijk om de verhalen te vertellen die mensen niet kennen.

Ze kunnen de basis vormen voor een gedeelde toekomst.”

En trois romans, Édouard Louis a imposé une écriture qui transforme les stigmates de sa vie en œuvre littéraire, dénonçant la logique d’une société où les minorités n’ont d’autre choix que de se laisser humilier et dominer. — GILLES BECHET Un premier roman lui a suffi pour créer l’événement. Quelques mois après la parution de Pour en finir avec Eddy Bellegueule, Édouard Louis avait déjà signé dix-huit contrats de traduction à l’étranger. Dès la première phrase de son récit qui évoque son enfance dans un petit village ouvrier du nord de la France, il prévient qu’il n’en a gardé aucun souvenir heureux.

Avec un froid détachement, il raconte un quotidien miné par la pauvreté, l’alcoolisme des uns et la violence des autres et par ses tentatives désespérées pour cacher, et même inverser, sa nature homosexuelle, à l’opposé de la culture de virilité machiste qui est la norme dans son milieu. Certains lui ont reproché d’en faire trop, de noircir le tableau. Édouard Louis s’en défend. Il dit qu’il raconte des vies que personne n’a envie d’entendre.

Les photos publiées sur son blog de sa maison d’enfance où des cartons remplacent des fenêtres brisées de sa chambre semblent conforter son récit.

Avec ses deux autres romans, Histoire de la violence et Qui a tué mon père, Édouard Louis poursuit son entreprise littéraire. Partir de son parcours de vie pour dénoncer une société qui se construit sur l’humiliation et la violence envers les minorités réprimées, que ce soient les pauvres, les homosexuels, les migrants, les Juifs ou les populations d’origine immigrée, une catégorie d’humains, dit-il, à qui, au contraire des dominants, la politique réserve non seulement l’humiliation mais aussi une mort précoce.

Face à cet état de fait, il refuse la résignation et cherche les voies d’un nouvel engagement à gauche. Avec Geoffroy de Lagasnerie, avec qui il

dialoguera à Bozar, Édouard Louis a publié une carte blanche dans le Monde du 27 septembre 2015.

Incapables de se reconnaître dans le monde dans lequel ils vivent, les deux signataires veulent croire à un engagement politique qui tourne le dos à ce sentiment d’impuissance qui lui est trop souvent associé : « La politique est constituée comme un risque, un stigmate - quand c’est le désengagement qui devrait plutôt être vu comme un problème ». L’action politique qu’ils prônent passe notamment par le refus de débats imposés autour de problématiques incompatibles et le renvoi de la honte aux discours des idéologues d’extrême droite dont on peut suivre les métastases dans le babil dominant. La nature, mode d’emploi FR

L’artiste français Michel Blazy expose à La Loge. C’est dans la nature, chez l’épicier ou dans nos cagibis, qu’il puise les matériaux pour donner forme à un paysage intérieur qui va se transformer, grandir et se détériorer avec le temps. — GILLES BECHET Fragiles et aléatoires, les installations de Michel Blazy sont composées de matériaux périssables ou quotidiens. On y trouve des éléments organiques comme de la purée de légumes, des oignons ou des champignons, mais aussi des chaussures de sport dans lesquelles il fait pousser des herbes folles. Ce qui intéresse l’artiste dans ses compositions conçues comme des paysages fabriqués, c’est de laisser la voie libre aux différents processus de transformation, de mutation et de prolifération du vivant. Au spectateur d’observer l’action de l’invisible, des micro-organismes, de la lumière, de la température sur la matière vivante. Qu’il enduise les murs de purée de carotte ou de sauce tomate ou réalise des sculptures en pâtes de soja et des tableaux en crème dessert, c’est pour montrer la

fragilité du vivant et ses capacités de régénération.

Il ne faudrait pas y voir une métaphore de notre cul-de-sac environnemental ou une odorante prophétie du cycle de la nature quand l’homme aura disparu de la Terre. « Mon travail a un rapport au vivant, pas à la nature. Chacune de mes sculptures est comme un être que je mets au point, et que j’observe dans différentes situations. Je vois davantage de liens de mes pièces avec la science-fiction qu’avec la nature », expliquait-il en 2000. Plus que la mort et la disparition, ce qui fascine Blazy, c’est la capacité de résistance et de résilience de la nature.

Michel Blazy n’est pas un doux rêveur mais plutôt un scientifique qui mène des expériences en laboratoire avec des matériaux qui

nous sont familiers. Et son ingrédient principal, c’est le temps. Un temps qui participe à notre fascination enfantine pour l’observation de l’évolution lente et inéluctable de ces matériaux vivants. S’il revendique l’artificialité de ses compositions, il en laisse la maîtrise plastique à la baguette du temps.

En matière de germination ou de décomposition, les formes ne semblent jamais pouvoir être déterminées par avance. Et comme toutes les expériences, ces installations sont reproductibles en suivant le mode d’emploi fourni par l’artiste.

Le scénario de la déliquescence du vivant pourra alors être rejoué perpétuellement. Jusqu’à épuisement des matériaux.

EYE ON THE PRIZE? Koenraad Dedobbeleer might have won the Belgian Art Prize in 2019, if it were still going to be awarded and if one of the other laureates, Sven Augustijnen, Gabriel Kuri, or Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys, hadn’t won it instead. Fortunately, long before that doomed prize selection came along, Wiels had realized that the Brussels-based artist’s work was more than deserving of its own solo exhibition.

LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD! In “Kunststoff – Gallery of Material Culture”, Wiels is bringing together more than forty works by Koenraad Dedobbeleer, including fifteen new works.

In his sculptures, photos, slide projections, books, and works on paper, he dissects the meaning of the label “material culture” and the way in which value is attached to certain materials. This sounds serious, but Koenraad Dedobbeleer’s tongue in cheek presentation is both playful and refreshing.

THEO WIE? Theodoor van Loon was een barokschilder uit het Brusselse die in de eerste helft van de zeventiende eeuw vooral werkte voor het hof van de aartshertogen Albrecht en Isabella en religieuze ordes, maar wiens werk zich, in tegenstelling tot dat van tijdgenoot Rubens, niet in het collectieve geheugen heeft weten te nestelen.

CARAVAGGIST TOT IN DE KIST! Op zijn reizen naar Italië deed Theodoor van Loon een fascinatie op voor het werk van de Italiaanse meester van het clair-obscur Caravaggio. En dat blijkt uit de goed vijftig doeken, gravures en tekeningen die Bozar bij elkaar wist te brengen.

Daarop tonen Van Loons voornamelijk religieuze figuren zich tegelijk imposant en gedetailleerd, vol gevoel en beweging, subtiel gehuld in licht en schaduw. De herontdekte meester gaat in Bozar ook nog eens de dialoog aan met de hedendaagse zwier van Joris Van de Moortel en Romeo Castellucci.

De periode tussen de twee Wereldoorlogen was voor de kosmopolitische broedhaard voor de kunsten een brandpunt van sociale verandering, welvaart en crisis, hoop en verval, utopie. Dat moet blijken uit straf werk van onder anderen Otto Dix, Kazimir Malevitsj en Aleksandr Rodtsjenko.

Though Birgit Jürgenssen was not widely known in her lifetime, today she is considered a major figure of the feminist avant-garde. With her ironic and striking images, she explores another kind of femininity. — GILLES BECHET Invited by Valie Export to take part in the exhibition “Feminismus: Kunst und Kreativität” in Vienna in 1975, Birgit Jürgenssen presented photographs in which she wore a cooking apron that gave her the appearance of a domestic robot. A striking image of a woman reduced to her function. A pioneer of feminist art, Jürgenssen was not as well known in her lifetime as her fellow Austrian, who received great media attention. When she died aged 54, she left behind a prolific body of work, cutting and ironic, which included photographs, drawings, watercolours, and sculptures in different materials.

She made many stylised self-portraits, in which she deconstructed the reductive cultural and social duties imposed on women in the kitchen, in the form of repetitive

household chores, and by fashion’s commodification of the female body.

Housewife, domestic woman, or domesticated woman, appearances are deceiving. In a series of drawings, we can see her ironing herself or becoming a decorative motif. In a series of photos, sculptures, and drawings, she offers a fetishistic view of the high-heeled shoe, the ultimate feminine accessory, which she transforms into extensions for her buttocks or a spiky growth on her forearms. In a series of sculptures, the shoe is also decked out in a wedding dress, becomes pregnant, and is turned raven-black.

Conceptual but not abstract, Birgit Jürgenssen’s work is inspired by the associative and disruptive mechanics of surrealism. She also employs the female body, her body, using it like a mask or a means of conveying

a change of identity, in a bitter masquerade. Poetic and elusive, her art is never dry, no doubt because of the constant irony that pervades it.

“For me, to be ironic about oneself is a sort of autobiographical strategy, which helps to reveal the potential for images to subvert and deconstruct,” Jürgenssen remarked. It’s also a strategy for viewing the world with detachment. Well before the development of gender theory, Birgit Jürgenssen put masculine stereotypes of femininity into images and forms. Before Cindy Sherman and Francesca Woodman, she explored iconoclastic femininity through the metamorphoses of her body.
