WHEREAS, in 2011 The Reverend Christopher Larry Epperson accepted God’s call to become the thirty-ninth Rector of Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia; and WHEREAS, throughout his nearly fifteen-year tenure as Bruton’s Rector, his ministry has been shaped by his compelling vision of worship, community involvement and theological inquiry; and WHEREAS, he has faithfully and diligently exercised his pastoral ministry among us with compassion, good humor and grace; and WHEREAS, his wisdom and insight provided the impetus which spawned the creation of The Friends of Bruton, an endeavor which has made it possible for thousands of people in this country and throughout the world to stay connected and participate in the preservation of Bruton’s unique history and spiritual legacy; and WHEREAS, in an era marked by declining church attendance — through the good times, including the joyous celebration of Bruton’s 350th Anniversary, and the bad times, including the most devastating pandemic of an infectious disease in over a century — his steady calm guidance has enabled our congregation to grow and to exercise our ministry of faithful service, shining this little light of ours brightly in our community in our diocese and, indeed, around the globe; and WHEREAS, his supportive and encouraging leadership paved the way for the acquisition and installation of both our new Dobson 96 Pipe Organ, which is not merely a musical instrument but a true work of art; and our new closed loop geothermal HVAC system, which is not simply a temperature control unit, but an engineering and ecological marvel; and WHEREAS, more recently his deep appreciation of the importance of reconciliation and racial healing inspired him to shepherd our congregation through the process of owning an accurate understanding of the role of African Americans in the history of Bruton Parish Church; and WHEREAS, it has now pleased Almighty God to call him away from Bruton Parish Church to undertake a new ministry as the Dean of All Saints’ Chapel and University Chaplain of Sewanee: The University of the South; now therefore be it RESOLVED, that on behalf of our entire congregation, the Vestry of Bruton Parish Church expresses its heartfelt appreciation and love to the Reverend Chris Epperson for his long and dedicated service to our church family, and we wish Chris, Laura, Zaven, Nell and Esme’ Godspeed as they embark on a new and exciting journey in God’s service; and be it further RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be entered into the minute books of the Vestry of Bruton Parish Church, and that a copy be presented to the Reverend Christopher Epperson on a suitable occasion prior to his departure.

In the 351 years since Bruton Parish first opened its doors in 1674, thirty-five ministers have served. Though the average tenure was seven years and eight months, the five longest-serving rectors together account for 40% of the church’s history. These five—two groups separated by a century—each shaped Bruton’s legacy in distinct and enduring ways: James Blair, 33 years, 1710–1743: Founder of the College of William & Mary; led construction of the brick church building still in use today.

John Bracken, 45 years, 1773–1818: A controversial figure but guided the parish from colonial Anglicanism through the Revolutionary era into the newly formed Episcopal Church.

William Archer Rutherford Goodwin, 18 years in split terms, 1903–1906 and 1926–1938: Directed the Rockefeller restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and Bruton Parish Church.

Francis Hopkinson Craighill, 18 years, 1938–1956: Oversaw a rise in Bruton’s popularity as Colonial Williamsburg developed into a major tourist destination.

Cotesworth Pinckney Lewis, 29 years, 1956–1985: Remembered for a bold sermon directed at President Lyndon Johnson—who was seated in the front pew— questioning his conduct of the Vietnam War.

Bruton Parish’s Search for a New Rector From Colonial Virginia to the Modern Church: The Evolving Call Process

S

ince its founding, Bruton Parish Church has navigated nearly three dozen transitions in spiritual leadership. Each vacancy in the pulpit has marked the beginning of a new chapter in the parish’s life. While the process of calling a rector once followed the steady course of Anglican tradition, today it unfolds through a more deliberate, inclusive, and reflective approach.

Bruton Parish’s Search for a New Rector

In the colonial era, the process of selecting a rector at Bruton, as in other Anglican parishes in Virginia, was marked by ongoing tension among the vestry, the royal governor, and the Bishop of London. Though the Bishop held official authority, he never visited Virginia, and in practice, real power existed with the local vestry. Despite royal instructions to present clergy to the governor for formal induction, vestries frequently hired ministers independently, typically on annual contracts.

The governor retained the authority to induct a minister, but that jurisdiction was often tempered by local political realities. Many Bruton vestrymen had influence on those in the Governor’s Council and in the House of Burgesses, which met just down Duke of Gloucester Street from the church. As a result, the selection of clergy at Bruton was shaped less by distant ecclesiastical oversight and more by local influence and negotiation.

Following the American Revolution, Anglican churches like Bruton reorganized under the newly formed Episcopal Church, adopting a revised governance structure with formal procedures for selecting and appointing clergy. Bishops began to play a more active role in the calling of rectors—a notable shift from colonial practice. Over the following decades and into the 20th century, this process continued to evolve, eventually becoming the collaborative and participatory model in use today.

As Bruton embarks on the search for its next rector, the anticipated 18 to 24 month process will include several key phases: the appointment of an interim priest, the formation of a search committee, a period of self-study to create a comprehensive Parish Profile, and discernment of potential candidates. While the vestry holds canonical authority to pick the new rector, the bishop and diocesan staff offer essential guidance to ensure that the process aligns with the standards and best practices of the wider Episcopal Church.

Though the methods of choosing clergy have changed over the centuries, one constant remains: a shared commitment to prayer. As in generations past, Bruton Parish turns to God for wisdom and guidance, trusting that the Holy Spirit will lead the church faithfully into its next chapter.

THE ADVENT VISION of Priest-Poet George Herbert

W

hen first thy sweet and gracious eye Vouchsafed ev’n in the midst of youth and night To look upon me, who before did lie Welt’ring in sin; I felt a sug’red strange delight, Passing all cordials made by any art, Bedew, embalm, and overrun my heart, And take it in.

George Herbert, 17th-century English priest and poet, nearly passed into obscurity. In 1633, just weeks before his early death at age 39, Herbert sent a collection of poems to a friend with a simple instruction: if the poems are worthy to be read, publish them; if not, burn them.

Thankfully, they were preserved in The Temple, a collection that continues to speak deeply of faith, love, and gratitude to God. Even if his name is unfamiliar, many have encountered Herbert’s voice in hymnody. “The Call” (“Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life...”) and “Praise II” (“King of glory, King of peace...”) remain beloved in Episcopal worship and beyond.

Some years ago, I led a group of college students on a pilgrimage through England. One of our first stops was Herbert’s parish church in Bemerton, just outside Salisbury. In Herbert’s day, Bemerton was a quiet village; now, it sits amid tidy rows of houses. From that small church, he led worship, counseled his flock, and wrote poetry that would echo for centuries.

Though his time there was brief—only three years—his reflections on the relationship between God and humanity endure. Within those walls, centuries later, our small gathering sang and prayed, sharing “The Call” as we sought the way, truth, and life in Jesus Christ.

Among those shaped by Herbert’s work is Richard Harries, former Bishop of Oxford, who recently released Wounded I Sing: From Advent to Christmas with George Herbert. Though few of Herbert’s poems address Advent directly, few speak more poignantly to the inner wrestling that characterizes the season—a time of preparation and anticipation, but also of waiting and wondering. One poem Harries highlights is “The Glance,” a meditation in three stanzas tracing the arc of a soul’s journey with God: Since that time many a bitter storm My soul hath felt, ev’n able to destroy, Had the malicious and ill-meaning harm His swing and sway: But still thy sweet original joy Sprung from thine eye, did work within my soul, And surging griefs, when they grew bold, control, And got the day.

Advent is peculiar in the life of the church. We prepare for Christmas and Christ’s return—but within that preparation lies an invitation to reflect on our life with God now. Whether we find ourselves weighted by sin, warmed by grace, facing storms, or longing for peace, we pause to consider the God who sees us where we are.

That is the gift of Advent. From the quiet honesty of the present, we glimpse the miracle of the Incarnation and await the promise of Christ’s return. Herbert’s poem reminds us that sometimes all it takes is a glance—a look from God that steadies the soul and stirs it to joy.

If thy first glance so powerful be, A mirth but opened and sealed up again; What wonders shall we feel, when we shall see Thy full-eyed love!

When thou shalt look us out of pain, And one aspect of thine spend in delight More than a thousand suns disburse in light, In heav’n above.

This Advent, as we wait and prepare, may we be held by that glance—thy sweet and gracious eye.

FIRST FRIDAYS­­— A Service of Healing and Hope W hen I first started working at SpiritWorks Foundation, a local recovery community organization founded by the Rev. Jan Brown, I dreamed of creating a regular recovery Eucharist. I envisioned a service that would minister to people healing from addiction, mental illness, codependence, and trauma. It would include recovery readings alongside the Gospel, offer quiet prayer and candle lighting, and incorporate prayers of the people with petitions specific to recovery. Most of all, I wanted it to be a space where those devastated by addiction—whether their own or a loved one’s—could hear of God’s love and be embraced by a caring community.

Choosing a Space As we discussed where to hold the service, Deacon Jan insisted it needed to be at Bruton Parish. At the time, neither of us worked there. I hesitated. I had imagined something intimate—chairs in a circle, people facing each other. Bruton felt too formal, too rigid, with its colonial architecture and high pulpit. Still, against my instincts, we approached the rector, Chris Epperson, and asked if we could hold a monthly recovery service there. He responded with an encouraging yes.

The First Service On February 1, 2013, after about a year of planning, we held our first service. I adapted a liturgy from Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. We used grape juice for Communion so the service would be completely safe for those in recovery. I told myself I’d be content if just ten people came.

Before the service, I was filled with anxiety and hope— mostly anxiety. We had no organist, no music. I worried that no one would show up, or that the service would not resonate with people who weren’t Episcopalians. I wondered if I had struck the right balance between recovery and religion.

Unexpected Grace We started late. A group of women from the Southeastern Family Program (SEFP)—pregnant women in recovery who would otherwise be having their babies in jail—got stuck in traffic on their way from Newport News. When they arrived, their first request was for a bathroom. So, one by one, during the service, they walked past the altar, through the sacristy, and down the steep stairs—moving through Bruton as though it were their home.

First Fridays—A Service of Healing and Hope

As I looked out into the congregation, I counted nearly 40 people. Some were parishioners, some were the SEFP women, others were mentors, family members of people struggling with addiction, people grieving a loved one lost to drugs, and members of the SpiritWorks community. We had babies only days old and elders in their 80s. I had the honor of blessing a baby named Luke. One woman sang “His Eye is On the Sparrow” a cappella during the offertory. Some were overwhelmed with gratitude just to be inside the church. One even asked if it was a cathedral.

All my fears dissolved. It was a glimpse of the kingdom of God. The Community Grows First Fridays has continued the first Friday of each month ever since. We have a steady congregation of about 20, sometimes swelling to 40 or 50, or with as few as 12. The SEFP women only made it to the first few services. Since then, we have baptized adults and infants, celebrated weddings and funerals, renewed vows, blessed babies, anointed the sick, and marked milestones from birthdays to release from jail or Eastern State Hospital.

We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and we’ve shown up for each other—this unlikely band of human beings who might not have met otherwise.

Faithfulness First Fridays continues not because of some great faith on my part, but because of God’s faithfulness. We show up. We plant the seeds. But it is God who sustains us and gives the growth.

Bruton’s Treasure, St. Mary the Virgin Church

“W

hy is this church named ‘Bruton’?”—This is one of the most frequently asked questions by visitors touring Bruton Parish Church. The name Bruton is unusual and often unfamiliar, particularly to American guests. This question offers a valuable opportunity to share not only the heritage of Bruton Parish Church but also the deeper historical connection to its English namesake—St. Mary the Virgin Church in Bruton, Somerset, England.

Sir William Berkeley and Thomas Ludwell, the Governor and Secretary of the Colony of Virginia, respectively, were originally from Bruton, Somerset, England. The name of their home village was given to the newly established church in Williamsburg. Thus, in 1674, Bruton Parish Church was founded.

The name Briuuetone appears in the 1086 Domesday Book and is believed to be derived from a combination of the Old English word tūn, meaning settlement or enclosure, and a Celtic element briw, thought to mean vigor or force—possibly referencing the swift-moving River Brue. This river, known for its tendency to flood, has brought both life and hardship to the village over the centuries. Bruton itself exemplifies what might be considered a typical English village—peaceful, and by today’s standards, quaint—with the River Brue winding through its center. Towering above the riverbanks stands the striking and historic St. Mary the Virgin Church, an architectural presence that cannot be overlooked.

structures were constructed from wattle—interwoven twigs—and timber, typical of early Saxon church architecture.

Situated in an area prone to frequent flooding, these early structures had a short lifespan, gradually deteriorating due to repeated floods and persistent damp conditions. Some historians speculate that two small stone buildings may have once stood on the site; however, no definitive evidence has been found to suggest that the Saxons used stone in their construction here.

While many questions about Bruton Parish remain The precise origins of the early church in Bruton remain unanswered, much of the history of St. Mary’s in Bruton is equally mysterious. Did two stone structures once uncertain. One tradition holds that the first church exist separately and later merge, as some historians was built on the site of the present structure in the 7th century, possibly authorized by King Ine of Wessex. The have suggested? Reports also mention a pre-Benedictine monastery on the site, dating back to 1007. In his 12th-century historian and monk William of Malmesbook St. Mary the Virgin, Bruton: A Brief History, bury mentioned two small churches in the area, though author John Bishton refers to a church he describes as he provided no specific details about their locations. Priory. However, verifying the accuracy of early historical accounts is challenging, particularly for records predating the Reformation.

of a larger west tower (which now houses the bells), a new south aisle, and a central nave. During this period, the north aisle was also modified, and new window tracery was added. Renovations continued into the 16th century, culminating in the completion of the roof and the addition of the clerestory.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries, started by Henry VIII and executed between 1536 and 1541, led to the closure of religious houses across England. In 1538, Bruton Abbey was dissolved and later sold to Sir Maurice Berkeley, an ancestor of Virginia Governor Sir William Berkeley. The abbey’s valuable lead roof was stripped and melted down—a common and economically motivated practice that often led to the destruction of such buildings. It is widely believed that this was the case at Bruton. The Berkeley family later constructed a new residence on the site, which served as their ancestral home for approximately 200 years. However, this house was demolished in the late 18th century, leaving only a single wall as a surviving remnant.

The arrival of the Augustinians in the 12th century led to the establishment of an Augustinian priory known as Bruton Abbey, with St. Mary’s serving as a chapel within the abbey complex. Around 1135, twelve canons arrived in Bruton from Normandy, supported by their patron, William de Mohun, who granted them the priory on his manor. Stone construction began around 1142. The Normans, renowned for their engineering and architectural skill, were well supported by de Mohun in undertaking such a costly endeavor. Added funding came from local markets—most notably through the wool trade—as well as from tithes, enabling the construction of a large and enduring priory.

The earliest surviving parts of St. Mary’s Church date to around 1350 and include the north aisle, the north tower, and the crypt beneath the chancel. A major expansion took place in the 15th century with the addition

Some architectural questions are still unanswered, due to damage caused by past burial excavations within the church — a practice banned in the early 1800s. Further loss of historical evidence occurred with the later installation of a boiler. Despite this, several stone fragments were discovered scattered around the church grounds.

Based on their stylistic features, these remnants are dated to around 1350. One particularly notable Norman fragment, thought to have been part of a cloister, is currently on loan to the Bruton Museum. It is described as featuring a carving of a leopard—a symbol of evil—along with other intricate motifs incorporated into the stone.

Parishioners throughout different historical periods have left their mark on this ancient building. Whether out of necessity or a desire to update the church, pews have been replaced, removed, or repositioned, aisles widened, and the pulpit moved, at one point even being painted and gilded. Numerous other changes have taken place over the church’s long history, some purely decorative or unnecessary, while others were essential for its continued use and upkeep.

Restorations in the late nineteenth century focused on repairing the roof, the north aisle wall, the tower, and the crypt—all of which were in urgent need of attention.

However, the late 1800s was not solely a time for prac-

tical repairs; it was also an era of artistic enhancement.

Stained glass windows were created during this period, and these still adorn the church today, both beautifying the space and serving as memorials and tributes.

St. Mary the Virgin holds a central place in the history of Bruton Parish Church. Its significance is reflected in the naming of the chapel in the Parish House as St. Mary’s Chapel, where photographs of St. Mary the Virgin are prominently displayed as an integral part of the chapel’s furnishings.

The Bruton Parish Guide Ministry F

or over 50 years—apart from a brief pause during the recent pandemic—Bruton Parish Church has welcomed visitors daily to experience the rich colonial history preserved in the living museum town of Colonial Williamsburg.

Although we are not directly affiliated with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, visitors naturally expect that one of the most prominent and historically significant sites in the district would be part of their journey. Indeed, the story of Colonial Williamsburg would be incomplete without understanding the central role Bruton Parish Church has played in the history of both colonial Virginia and the nation.

Our prime location in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, combined with strong public interest in our church building, provides us with a remarkable opportunity to share our story—both past and present. The dedicated individuals who make up our Guide Ministry are essential to seizing that opportunity.

The mission of the Guide Ministry is to welcome all visitors and share the rich history of Bruton Parish Church: its role in colonial America, its distinctive architecture, and its enduring contributions to the spiritual life of our parish and community over the past 351 years. In doing so, the Guide Ministry serves as an expression of God’s love through genuine hospitality.

Currently, the church is open to visitors daily from 12:00pm– 4:00pm, and on Sundays from 12:30pm–4:00pm. Guides serve two-hour shifts, from 12:00–2:00pm and 2:00–4:00pm. Ideally, three guides staff each shift. This means we have 14 shifts per week, requiring 42 volunteer slots to be filled. Most guides work the same shift each week and graciously volunteer for additional shifts when needed.

Guides and greeters are responsible for interpreting the church’s history, managing visitor flow and behavior, and ensuring the stewardship of our historic building and churchyard during visiting hours. All guides must complete a training course established by the Guide Ministry leadership, be mentored by an experienced guide during on-site hours, and participate in ongoing education. Greeters, a subset of the guide team, must attend an orientation session and observe two shifts before beginning their service.

Each year, the Guide Ministry interacts with tens of thousands of visitors—sharing not just our history but also the essence of our faith.

We invite all parishioners to consider joining this meaningful ministry. If you are interested or would like more information on becoming a guide, please do not hesitate to reach out. l a r ry z e nsi nge r

C

an I tell you what I like most about our Bruton Parish Church Vestry meetings?

At the beginning of each meeting, one member offers a prayer for God’s guidance and shares their own insights. Twelve uniquely skilled people from diverse backgrounds gather on the third Monday of every month to work together toward shared goals—budgeting and fundraising, property maintenance, and supporting our clergy and ministry programs.

The 2025 Vestry includes members from diverse occupations: current and retired educators, an aviator, business administrators, fundraisers, investors, lawyers, and a doctor.

Each year, four members retire, and four new members are elected. There are four executive officers: Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Register, and Treasurer. Also attending the meetings are ex officio members, staff, and clergy.

Each vestry member acts as a liaison to one or more of Bruton Parish’s many ministries. In that role, Sue Saunders recently delivered a report on the Altar Guild ministry, which Libby Flowers and Kathy Mullins co-chair. A summary of Sue’s report follows: Altar Guild­—Behind Every Eucharist at Bruton The Altar Guild service is often called the “silent ministry.” Its greeters, readers, chalicers, and guides serve in full view of the congregation, yet they might go unnoticed. The Episcopal Church defines an Altar Guild as a volunteer group whose ministry is to care for the altar, vestments, vessels, and linens used during worship. They prepare the sanctuary before services and clean up afterward. Historically, Altar Guilds were either all-male—often composed of postulants for the priesthood—or mostly female, in times before women were permitted to serve in other church roles. Today, both men and women serve on Altar Guilds.

Members of the Altar Guild value the spiritual and meditative nature of their work. They love the church’s rituals and understand the symbolism behind them. They pay close attention to details that often go unnoticed but add beauty and meaning of our worship. Our Altar Guild arranges the altar with care and elegance, honoring the traditions of the Episcopal Church and Bruton’s own customs in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Currently our Altar Guild has fifteen active members. A regular Eucharist service requires eleven pieces of brocade, seven pieces of linen, eight silver items, three brass items, four pieces of glassware, and two tall white candles—all of which must be cleaned and stored afterward. In 2024, our members served at 270 Eucharist services, not including weddings and funerals.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel: The Meaning Behind the Music P erhaps the most universally beloved Advent hymn is O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Its text was recorded as part of the Roman liturgy by the 8th century and may have originated as early as the 6th. Though the tune came later, the Latin text was assigned to the Vespers services on the seven days before Christmas Eve, typically preceding the Magnificat. This set of seven is known as the “O Antiphons,” as each begins with the exclamation, “O.”

The second Latin word of each antiphon forms an acrostic: ERO CRAS, meaning in Latin, “I shall be present tomorrow”—a message revealed only on the eve of Christmas. Though the author is unknown, each antiphon is drawn from prophetic verses in Isaiah, expressing the longing for the Messiah and ending with a heartfelt petition.

The tune now associated with these antiphons—Veni, veni Emmanuel—is preserved as a 15th-century processional, though originally paired with unrelated text, in a manuscript from French Franciscan nuns. The version we know today is based on a 19th-century metrical English translation, which first paired the antiphons with that melody. Our current hymnal begins and ends with the final antiphon—O Emmanuel—resulting in eight verses rather than the original seven.

While many other traditions fill the Advent season with Christmas carols, we remain rooted in the liturgical practice of waiting.

In our Sunday liturgies, we delay the joyful strains of familiar carols until Christmas Eve, encouraging us all to center at least part of our holiday joy on the true meaning of the season. r e b e c c a e . d av y

Faith in Action: A Joyful Season for Children and Youth we’ve helped hundreds of students in need. This year, we’ve expanded our support to DJ Montague Elementary. Whether through the PAW program at Christmas, the Lenten Drive, or our new Amazon Wish List, parishioners have found many ways to share Christ’s love with children in our community.

It is a joy to see how deeply our parish family invests in the lives of children and youth, both within Bruton and beyond. These ministries do more than fill calendars— they build faith, nurture friendships, and extend God’s care into the wider community.

A

fter fourteen years at Bruton Parish Church, one of my favorite times is still the start of a new program year. While children’s and youth ministries continue year-round, the fall brings a special energy as students return more regularly. From September through December, the ministry is especially lively: new acolyte teams, children’s church, Sunday school, choir, and youth group all return to their regular rhythm. We are also busy with fundraisers to support next summer’s mission trip and already making plans for Vacation Bible School.

As you can see, there are many ways to be involved throughout the year. If you feel called to help—whether by teaching Sunday school, hosting youth group, chaperoning a mission trip, or shepherding a group during Vacation Bible School—please reach out to me anytime.

Our fellowship opportunities add to the excitement.

October brings the Fall Fellowship Festival with live music, face painting, a balloonist, delicious food, and a wonderful sense of togetherness. In November, youth and Canterbury students host the beloved Thanksgiving Feast. December is full of tradition—our Visit from St. Nicholas toy and book drive, the Advent Wreath making party with dinner, and of course the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve, featuring all our children, youth, and even our resident donkey!

This fall also marks our fifth year of supporting local schools. Since the beginning, Bruton has partnered with Berkeley Middle and Lafayette High, where the Care Closet program has thrived thanks to parishioner generosity. Through donations, drives, and shopping trips,

I

n the chancel stands the Jamestown Baptismal Font, brought to Bruton Parish at the dawn of the 18th century when the capital shifted from Jamestown to Williamsburg. Worn by time yet rich with memory, it bears witness to generations of baptisms— including fourteen where George Washington stood as godfather. The simple act of pouring water from an ewer to fill the basin continues a centuries-old ritual, reminding us how faith and history flow together.
