EN “The world needs symphonic music. And symphonic music needs the world.”
That is the firm belief of the Brussels Philharmonic. As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best we can is deeply rooted in our DNA.
“ONTDEK DE KRACHT VAN ONS MUZIKAAL COLLECTIEF.”
BRUSSELS PHILHARMONIC & KAZUSHI ONO
By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, we keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and inspiring — for ourselves and all of society.
We do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with our music director Kazushi Ono: he shares our open and adventurous spirit and our rock-solid belief in the need for crossfertilization between art, life and society.
“PERSONALLY, I BELIEVE THAT ART SHOULD ALWAYS STRIVE FOR THE “SUBLIME”—THAT WHICH IS SLIGHTLY BEYOND OUR GRASP.”
KAZUSHI ONO
A NEW TEAM
EN Gunther Broucke joined in 1998, when the orchestra and choir became independent from public broadcasting. He guided the ensembles through turbulent times toward today’s stability, international prestige, and local relevance. From the start, he set an ambitious course: Gunther recognized the potential of film music, securing prestigious Hollywood soundtracks; he returned the musicians to their home base at Flagey in 2005; he built an extensive international network and established the organization as a pioneer through innovative projects.
“I leave behind three healthy ensembles, brimming with ambition and ready for the next step. I am delighted that the board, led by Luc Delrue, chose to split the intendant role: appointing two strong, complementary profiles ensures the future’s continued growth. I have full confidence in Masa and Steven, and I look forward to following the ensembles’ progress under their leadership.”
Artistic Director Masa Spaan brings extensive experience in artistic programming, a proven track record in innovation, and a vast international network. In recent years, Masa was responsible for the artistic strategy at Concertgebouw de Doelen (Rotterdam). Previously, she was an independent programmer, developing interdisciplinary projects for various orchestras, choirs, and festivals.
“What the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaams Radiokoor do is unique; I’ve followed them from De Doelen for some time. When I was invited to become Artistic Director and went through the selection process, my enthusiasm only grew. It was clear: I had fallen in love with the job.”
General Director Steven Cosyns joins as a driven professional with extensive experience in business management and leading large creative organizations. Steven was CEO of BBDO Belgium, a leading communications group, and recently founded his own creative agency. He now brings his expertise and network to support the continued growth of our organization.
“I have known the orchestra and choir for a long time and have always been fascinated by their innovative, unconventional, and successful path. Being able to chart the future now, together with Masa, the team, and all the musicians and singers, is a dream. I am honored and humbled to work for such talent.”

Past spring, the Brussels Philharmonic asked photographer Maryan Sayd to capture a concert evening in Flagey - and to share the experience.
“I got into photography quite naturally, the day I was finally able to buy my own mirrorless camera. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to capture those moments I was convinced only I could see. Today, I don’t think about being the only one who sees things the way I do anymore, but I believe that, as photographers, we share this common experience: searching for the angle that isn’t immediately visible to the naked eye, finding light where we thought there was none.
I’ve been photographing events for a few years now, mostly within the electronic music scene. As a queer photographer, I’m also very mindful of my presence, never wanting to feel too intrusive or imposing. So experiencing a philharmonic concert wasn’t really the challenge. The real challenge was trying to capture the details without making things feel too formal, respecting tradition while still reinterpreting it in my own way.
I still had my own little moment where I simply let myself enjoy the beauty of the music, and I was completely mesmerized.”

“MY GOAL IS TO LIBERATE THE MUSICIANS AND ALLOW THEM TO TRULY CREATE. AFTER ALL, A CONDUCTOR DOESN’T PRODUCE A SINGLE SOUND ALONE.”
KAZUSHI ONO
Kazushi Ono is the definitive musical citizen of the world. He was born in Tokyo, studied in Munich and forged his early career in Zagreb, Karlsruhe and Tokyo. These influences shaped an inquiring and profound musical intellect and an ability to communicate meaning across languages and cultures. His passion and curiosity for repertoire take him to the standard classics but also to new music and he often commissions new orchestral works and operas. He is a vocal advocate for the role of culture in all our lives and works actively within the communities which his three orchestras serve.
Verdi’s Requiem is a testament to human resilience: it is the sound of humanity singing at the edge of the abyss.. In this score, I find a mirror of our own fragility and our relentless search for hope.
Why you can’t miss this: to witness the sheer power of human voices unified in a plea for peace is a physical experience. You don’t just hear the Requiem; you feel the floor shake and the air grow thin. It is a rare moment of total communal catharsis.
SHOSTAKOVICH & PROKOFIEV 6
This program navigates a complex psychological landscape: both Shostakovich and Prokofiev were masters of speaking truth under immense pressure, and these works represent their most profound ‘inner diaries.’ Today, it is deeply meaningful to uncover these ‘hidden voices’ of the 20th century.
Why you can’t miss this: for the breathtaking technical and emotional odyssey of the Shostakovich concerto.
RACHMANINOV/REGER/SCRIABIN
A program of interwoven textures and visions, set at the crossroads of fine art, philosophy, and sound. We journey from the melancholic modernism of late Rachmaninov to the lush, painterly world of Reger, reaching a zenith in Scriabin’s cosmic explosion of light and tone.
Why you can’t miss this: this concert will be an absolute feast for the senses.
L’ULTIMO CANTO DELL’UOMO

EN “The heart’s undying hope”
Throughout his life, Giuseppe Verdi remained an agnostic, neither mocking nor dismissing religion: “To have faith is good, but not to rely on faith is better.” Yet, it was this very man who created one of the most famous religious works in history—a tour de force sparked by the death of the great Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. Verdi deeply admired the writer, who, like himself, upheld the ideals of humanity and justice. Such a man deserved a tribute. That tribute became the Requiem.
The Requiem is the greatest opera Verdi never wrote; the most dramatic sacred music ever composed. From the ominous, thundering Dies Irae to the achingly beautiful Requiem Aeternam, its scale and scope are immense, its emotional expression breathtakingly wide. And despite its liturgical framework, Verdi succeeded in making the two core themes of every requiem—fear and hope—tangible and accessible to believers and nonbelievers alike.
“TO ME, VERDI’S DIES IRAE IS THE MOST HONEST REPRESENTATION OF HUMAN TERROR EVER WRITTEN. BUT IT IS THE LIBERA ME THAT HAUNTS ME; IT IS A PLEA FOR PEACE THAT FEELS MORE URGENT NOW THAN EVER.” KAZUSHI ONO

ALENA BAEVA
The brilliant Alena Baeva will take center stage with her signature work: Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, the piece that made her a laureate in the 2005 Queen Elisabeth Competition.
“This piece resonates deeply with our unsettled times. It was written under oppression, and reflects a reality where truth had to be masked, or whispered in musical language. The music of Shostakovich often expresses things that couldn’t be said aloud—it speaks about fear, solitude, defiance, often bitter irony, but also dreams and ideals.”
“Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev were forced to constantly navigate the strict dictates of the Soviet regime and their own artistic integrity. I once spoke with musicians who lived through this era: they told me that this music wasn’t ‘art’—it was oxygen.”
Kazushi Ono
A GLIMPSE OF FREEDOM
EN Dark, brooding, and painfully personal
In his First Violin Concerto, Shostakovich’s inner struggle under the repression of the Soviet regime is felt like a throbbing wound. Silenced since 1947, it only dared to emerge in 1955. With its haunting nocturne, a desperately virtuous cadenza, and a fiery finale, it is a formidable challenge for both orchestra and soloist.
Prokofiev’s Sixth Symphony bows under that same heavy shadow of the regime. Its 1947 premiere was initially wellreceived, but only a month later, the political climate shifted. Prokofiev was branded a ‘decadent formalist’ and never fully recovered from the blow. Pressed to explain the tragic nature of his work, he offered a cryptic reference to the Great Patriotic War: “Now we are rejoicing in our great victory, but each of us has wounds that cannot be healed… One has lost dear ones; another has lost his health. These must not be forgotten.”

F/W26: EXPLOSIVE CONTRASTS AND UNUSUAL CONNECTIONS
LAB I: MUSICAL PROMPTS
“Onze reeks LAB-concerten loopt verder.
ARS MUSICA: SIMON-STEEN ANDERSEN
FR LAB I: MUSICAL PROMPTS

LAB I: MUSICAL PROMPTS
“This program spotlights two composers I’ve often collaborated with at the Tectonics Festival: Annea Lockwood and George Lewis. Both are not only uniquely original voices but also deeply inspiring individuals whose insights leave a lasting impression.
As a young man, Lewis played with jazz legends before pioneering electronic music in the 70s and 80s. His work is explosive yet tender, rich in contrast and beauty. Annea Lockwood, a sound artist fascinated by the natural world, brings a rare vocal work to this program, which I am thrilled to perform with the Vlaams Radiokoor. Completing this ‘American’ journey are Tyshawn Sorey and Raven Chacon—two brilliant young composers whose music explores the inspiring complexity of genre and heritage.”
ARS MUSICA
“Steen-Andersen has truly carved his own path as a composer. His 2019 work TRIO is monumental, written for symphony orchestra, large choir, and big band. By adding historic archival footage, he brings legends like Sergiu Celibidache back to the stage. Watching these icons rehearse decades ago while experiencing a live orchestra creates striking contrasts and surprising new connections.”

“WEATHERING
MIRRORS THE STAMINA NEEDED TO ENDURE SYSTEMIC RACISM—THE CHRONIC STRESS OF A PERMANENT ‘FIGHT OR FLIGHT’ MODE. I HOPE MY MUSIC DOES NOY CAUSE STRESS, BUT SPARKS EMPATHY. AFTER ALL, THIS KIND OF WEATHERING AFFECTS US ALL.”
GEORGE LEWIS
THE POSSIBILITIES OF WHAT CAN BE POSSIBLE
EN Raven Chacon, the first Native American Pulitzer winner, usually tackles history and politics. With Inscription, however, he lets the music speak for itself. Inspired by 1,000-yearold New Mexican petroglyphs, he treats ancient rock art as musical prompts: “They looked like violin cues or bass clarinet vibratos to me.” Breaking from rigid tradition, Chacon uses graphic scores and microtones, treating every orchestral player as an ‘autonomous sound-maker’.
Then, the tempo drops to a nearstandstill. Tyshawn Sorey’s Adagio (For Wadada Leo Smith) is a monumental lesson in patience, moving with the majestic, imperceptible crawl of a glacier. Amidst the near-silence, a slowly rotating alto sax melody offers a steady hand to hold.
But silence is an illusion. Unless time stops, the world—nature, the city, our own bodies—is always loud. These are the raw materials of Annea Lockwood. In Saouah!, she blurs the lines between voice, breath, and instrument, inviting us to stop hunting for harmony and start feeling the physical resonance of sound itself.
Finally, George Lewis explores time as ‘wear and tear’: “Weathering mirrors the stamina needed to endure systemic racism—the chronic stress of a permanent ‘fight or flight’ mode. I hope my music does noy cause stress, but sparks empathy. After all, this kind of weathering affects us all.”
“ENERGY IS ETERNAL DELIGHT.”
WILLIAM BLAKE
EN In Don Juan, Richard Strauss portrays the ultimate seducer in all his glory and tragedy: restless, yearning, and ultimately—inevitably—confronted by his own limitations. A vibrant symphonic poem full of youthful energy and reckless seduction, ending in a pregnant silence. This stillness is broken by the massive soundworld of Iannis Xenakis: in Empreintes, he makes the orchestra sound like an overwhelming force of nature, creating a fascinating listening experience that pushes known musical boundaries.
Then, Ludwig van Beethoven dots the i’s, bringing the essence of the symphony back to the fore—albeit with a mischievous wink. His Eighth Symphony is an ode to vitality and is packed with musical wit. Defying personal struggles and setbacks, he produced a compact, upbeat symphony that strikes like a potent jolt of energy.

“TO SURRENDER DREAMS— THIS MAY BE MADNESS.”
EN Schumann wrote the first true cello concerto, though he never heard it performed during his lifetime. Its enduring popularity lies in its emotional depth, as Victor Julien-Laferrière notes: “I hope Schumann’s concerto offers the audience a deeply romantic moment, evoking someone alone with their thoughts, in an intimate dialogue with nature.”
Richard Strauss, a master of musical storytelling, reached new heights with Don Quixote. “Fantastic variations on a theme of knightly character”, he subtitled this symphonic poem, based on Cervantes’ book about the knighterrant. And fantastic it is: a masterfully composed tale that sweeps listeners along—at times delicately, at others with irony and flamboyance—into the battle against injustice.

A SONIC EXPLORATION
EN Conductor Oscar Jockel explores the potential of an orchestra scattered throughout the hall: distance shifts into proximity, sound turns fluid, and movement reshapes the listening experience. Musicians, instruments, audience—everyone breathes and sounds differently. An experience that grounds you in the here and now.
In the 16th century, the vast, echoing space of St Mark’s Basilica forced composers like Gabrieli into radical experimentation. Five centuries later, this inspired Jockel’s paths in the sky, in which he deconstructs the orchestra, letting music emerge from every corner of the hall.
Slowly, the musicians filter back toward the stage to unite for Miloslav Kabelác’s Mystery of Time: a profound symphonic translation of his fascination with space and the unyielding order that governs the cosmos.

STRAVINSKY: THE FIREBIRD

EN In TRIO, Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen weaves iconic fragments of music history into a sonic collision, confronting orchestra, choir, and big band with their own past. He curated the visual layer from over 400 hours of archival footage from the SWR vaults—with one legendary exception: a 1888 wax cylinder, the very first audio recording of a largescale orchestra and choir.
These rapid-fire clips—some lasting only a fraction of a second—create a kaleidoscopic collage of musical memory in a live dialogue with 150 musicians on stage. With this grotesque and visually charged composition, Steen-Andersen solidifies his reputation as one of contemporary music’s most visionary voices.
The evening opens with a new creation by Oren Boneh, commissioned by Ars Musica. The young composer reimagines the orchestra as a ‘human jukebox’—a versatile instrument capable of switching between and colliding musical styles in entirely unexpected ways.

ARS MUSICA 2026: ARCTIC FEVER
A fresh mix of Nordic contemporary music
ARS MUSICA 2026 sets out on an expedition through the fascinating musical landscapes of the Far North, where new music resonates with the vastness of ice, rocks, water, and forests. The theme ‘Arctic Fever’ refers to a North that is warming up, where glaciers disappear into the sea at an accelerating pace—but it also stands for the infectious, ‘viral’ joy of discovery. Because in a world that is burning, we must burn with curiosity ourselves.

A TRIUMPH OF ORGANIC INNOVATION
KRISTIAN SALLINEN
EN With the imposing Pacific Ocean as her co-pilot, Kaija Saariaho drove from Los Angeles to San Diego in January 2019. “I felt music literally streaming into my mind,” she recalled; ideas bubbled up for a new piece she simply called Vista.
Benjamin Britten portrays Peter Grimes as a raw outsider desperate to escape the suffocating grip of his village. His anxiety and inevitable downfall are mirrored in the turbulent North Sea—not a static backdrop, but a powerful, restless character in its own right.
A ‘symphonic fantasy’ rooted in his beloved Finnish nature: Sibelius defiantly cast his Seventh Symphony as a single, monumental arc. The music flows, falters, and swells—an unbroken stream reflecting the endless Finnish horizon that defined his world.

MUST-SEE FILMS Inspired by the musical programme of this concert, film journalist Robin Broos has put together a personal selection in which landscapes do more than set the scene—they shape the story.
BEYOND THE SCORE
For this Beyond the Score, the sea flows between the notes. Shifting like the tide, orchestral masterpieces merge with the sonic seascapes of Vera Cavallin and Christophe Albertijn to form a single, seamless wave.
Through her Terrasonica project, Vera Cavallin is building a haunting archive of endangered sounds that captures the fading echoes of our natural world—from animal species to environments at risk of disappearing. “For this concert, I will create a soundscape in which field recordings and an acoustic instrument reconnect with one another, creating a sonic universe linked to the sea— what it evokes and its frequencies—while also carrying a message about the need to protect the element from which everything originated.”
“IT’S GOOD! AWFULLY EMOTIONAL!
TOO EMOTIONAL, BUT I LOVE IT!” EDWARD ELGAR
Awfully emotional! Too emotional, but I love it.”
EN On the verge of emotional overkill, but that’s exactly why they’re so irresistible: Elgar and Brahms deliver intense Romanticism and overwhelming melancholy. A symphonic bath that’s perfect for diving into headfirst.
Virtuoso genius, total mastery of his instrument, and the gift of making well-known repertoire sound entirely new: that is the hallmark of top violinist Christian Tetzlaff. His recent recording of Elgar’s Violin Concerto once again showcases his mastery in distilling emotional narratives — perfectly in line with what Elgar himself wrote about the work: “It’s good! Awfully emotional! Too emotional, but I love it.”
Brahms’ Fourth Symphony strikes a similarly intimate chord. Born from a period of paralyzing doubt—though, fortunately, he persevered—this masterpiece finds Brahms at his zenith, fusing classical rigor with a restless Romantic soul. It is, as one critic described, “like a dark well: the deeper you gaze, the brighter the stars shine back.”
BRAHMS DECONSTRUCTED
Brahms’ Fourth is a symphonic pinnacle—intense, refined, and globally beloved since 1885. With its dark timbres and relentless tension, it remains a masterpiece of profound emotional drive. Pianist and storyteller Florestan Bataillie takes you for a closer look.

CHRISTIAN TETZLAFF
Christian Tetzlaff is one of the most sought-after violinists and most exciting musicians on the classical music scene. Born in Hamburg in 1966 and now living in Berlin with his family, there are three things that make this musician unique, aside from his astounding skill on the violin. He interprets the musical manuscript in a literal fashion, he perceives music as a language, and reads the great works as narratives that reflect existential insights. christian-tetzlaff.de
SYMPHONIC SYMBOLISM
EN America never felt like home to Rachmaninov: his Romanticism was deemed outdated, and the new musical sounds felt alien to him. The Fourth Piano Concerto represents a decades-long quest for a new identity—no other work demanded such intensive labor. The result is a concerto balancing tradition and modernism: grotesque, melancholic, and exuberant all at once.
As a bridge to Scriabin’s sonic world, Max Reger brings the paintings of Böcklin to life: a shifting journey that drifts between the silence of lonely isolation and the frenzy of a wild festival.
Far from modest, Alexander Scriabin saw himself as a messiah destined to change the world through music: “When you listen to Poème de l’extase, look straight into the eye of the sun!” This opulent orgy of sound, accompanied by Scriabin’s own three-hundred-line poem, evokes the timelessness he dreamed of, despite its shadowy mysticism.
Lukáš Vondrácek is a pianist of visceral power and rare emotional depth. Since his triumph at the 2016 Queen Elisabeth Competition, he has become one of the most compelling interpreters of the grand Russian repertoire. For Vondrácek, playing Rachmaninov is a deeply personal confession: he inhabits the music’s ‘shimmering melancholy’ with a technique that knows no limits, bridging the gap between raw passion and crystalline stillness.
“SCRIABIN’S POEM OF ECSTASY REPRESENTS THE ULTIMATE LIBERATION OF THE SPIRIT. IT IS A WORK THAT REFUSES TO BE CONTAINED.”
