voorwoord avant-propos preface

H

et is niet zonder trots dat ik u dit boek mag presenteren over de renovatie van de oorspronkelijke, iconische transithal van Brussels Airport: de Skyhall. Er zijn nu eenmaal weinig gebouwen in België die zo tot de verbeelding spreken als deze indrukwekkende hal.

Zowat iedereen die ouder is dan veertig, heeft wel mooie, emotionele herinneringen aan dit fantastische bouwwerk: leunend over de reling van de passerelle om familie en vrienden uit te wuiven of vliegtuigen nakijkend door die gigantische glasgevel die deed dromen van verre horizonten. Ik herinner me mijn eigen verwondering nog toen ik mee mocht met mijn vader en probeer me voor te stellen hoe de bezoekers zich bij de opening van de luchthaven in 1958 de ogen moeten hebben uitgekeken.

Si vous avez plus de quarante ans, il y a de fortes chances que cet ouvrage fantastique vous ait laissé d’émouvants souvenirs : penché au-dessus de la balustrade de la passerelle pour saluer votre famille et vos amis ou observer les avions à travers cette gigantesque façade de verre, rêvant d’horizons lointains.

’est avec une certaine fierté que je vous présente ce livre consacré à la rénovation du plus emblématique hall de transit de Brussels Airport : le Skyhall. Rares sont les bâtiments qui, en Belgique, nourrissent tant l’imaginaire que cette impressionnante salle.

Je me rappelle mon propre émerveillement quand j’accompagnais mon père prendre l’avion. Et je tente de me figurer l’impression des visiteurs de l’aéroport, lors de son inauguration, en 1958.

Brussel was in dat jaar gaststad van de eerste naoorlogse wereldtentoonstelling. Expo 58 zou het hoogtepunt worden van het vooruitgangsoptimisme van de jaren vijftig, een ode aan het menselijk genie. En ook de nieuwe luchthaven die in juni 1958 in gebruik werd genomen, moest in niets onderdoen voor de revolutionaire paviljoenen op de wereldtentoonstelling.

Cette année-là, Bruxelles accueillait la première Exposition universelle d’après-guerre. L’Expo 58 incarnerait au plus haut point le progrès des années 1950, une ode au génie humain.

Et l’aéroport inauguré en 1958 se devait d’être aussi avant-gardiste que les pavillons de l’Exposition universelle.

imposante transithal. Alles wat ons land aan de wereld wilde tonen, kwam samen in deze hal: architectonische durf, artistiek lef, technisch vernuft en een doordacht gebruik van destijds moderne materialen als beton en aluminium.

et moderniste, logiquement articulé autour de son imposante salle de transit. Cet espace exhiberait tout ce que notre nation entendait présenter au monde : son audace architecturale, son courage artistique, son ingéniosité technique et l’usage intelligent de matériaux, novateurs à l’époque, tels le béton et l’aluminium.

Een hal met een totale vloeroppervlakte van meer dan 5.500m2 waarvan een gevel van maar liefst 1.800 m2 volledig in glas is opgetrokken. Een plafond van 18 meter hoog dat wel lijkt te zweven omdat het lichtjes steunt op slanke kolommen, alles in evenwicht gehouden door trekkers achteraan. En daglicht dat van overal overvloedig binnenstroomt.

Un espace au sol de plus de 5 500 m2 doté d’une façade entièrement vitrée de non moins de 1 800 m2. Un plafond — à 18 m de hauteur — qui semble léviter au-dessus de colonnes élancées, le tout maintenu en équilibre grâce aux tirants placés à l’arrière. Une salle inondée de toutes parts de lumière naturelle.

Lorsque l’aile administrative de 1958 a fait place à un immeuble de bureaux flambant neuf, le Gateway, il est vite apparu que la façade vitrée de l’ancienne salle de transit n’était plus dans le ton.

We hadden er natuurlijk voor kunnen kiezen om enkel de gevel te renoveren. Maar we vonden het onze plicht om deze parel van de naoorlogse bouwkunst voor toekomstige generaties te bewaren.

Ook dat maakt deel uit van de maatschappelijke rol die wij wensen op te nemen.

Bien sûr, nous aurions pu choisir de ne rénover que la façade.

Mais nous avons estimé qu’il était de notre devoir de préserver cette perle de l’architecture d’après-guerre pour les générations futures. Cela aussi fait partie du rôle sociétal que nous souhaitons assumer.

Veel opties voor de herbestemming van het gebouw waren er niet. Want het veelvuldige gebruik van aluminium dat de lichte structuur van de hal mogelijk had gemaakt, was meteen ook haar zwakke punt. De structuur was niet sterk genoeg om moderne brandbeveiligingssystemen of dubbele beglazing te dragen. Was het wel mogelijk om het gebouw aan te passen aan de normen van vandaag zonder het oorspronkelijke concept geweld aan te doen?

Cependant, les options pour la réaffectation du bâtiment étaient peu nombreuses. L’emploi massif d’aluminium, qui avait permis de mettre en place une structure particulièrement légère, constituait précisément son point faible. La structure en aluminium se révélait incapable de supporter le poids des systèmes de protection incendie et du double vitrage des bâtiments contemporains.

Design d’autrefois et normes actuelles étaient-ils inconciliables ?

Tot bij onze ingenieurs een even eenvoudig als geniaal idee de kop opstak: het dak van bovenaf verstevigen met een nieuwe stalen draagstructuur, zodat de bestaande dakstructuur alleen haar eigen gewicht nog moest dragen. En zo geschiedde …

C’est alors que nos ingénieurs ont eu une idée de génie : renforcer le toit par le haut au moyen d’une nouvelle structure porteuse en acier afin que la charpente existante n’ait plus à supporter que son propre poids. C’est ainsi que tout a commencé ...

Nu het ook technisch haalbaar bleek, stond er niks meer in de weg om de transithal in haar oorspronkelijke glorie te herstellen.

Une fois la faisabilité technique avérée, plus rien ne s’opposait à ce que le hall de transit retrouve son éclat d’antan. Nous étions libres de mettre en place un projet qui rende justice à l’histoire des lieux, tout en respectant les normes d’aujourd’hui : la réaffectation durable d’un élément précieux du patrimoine de l’aviation belge.

Dat deze unieke hal een begeerde locatie wordt voor nationale en internationale high-end events, daarover bestaat geen twijfel. En misschien nog leuker is dat iedereen de Skyhall in haar volle glorie kan bewonderen vanuit de vertrekhal en de vernieuwde inkomhal.

Je tiens à remercier toutes les équipes qui ont soutenu cet incroyable projet. Le résultat est tout simplement impressionnant !

Ik wil graag alle teams bedanken die hun schouders onder dit ongelooflijke project hebben gezet. Het resultaat mag er zijn.

I

t is with a genuine sense of pride that I present this book about the renovation of the original, iconic transit hall at Brussels Airport: the Skyhall. There are few buildings in Belgium that so spark the imagination as this impressive hall.

technical ingenuity and a well-considered use of then modern materials such as concrete and aluminium.

A hall with a total floor area of more than 5,500m2 and a 1,800 square meter façade entirely made of glass. An 18-meter high ceiling that seems to float as it rests lightly on slender columns, held in balance by tie beams at the rear. And daylight that floods in from everywhere.

Just about everyone above the age of forty has beautiful, emotional memories about this fantastic structure: leaning over the railing of the walkway to wave off family and friends or to stare at aircraft through the gigantic glass façade which evoked dreams of far-off horizons. I still remember my own amazement when my father took me with him and try to imagine how those attending the opening of the airport in 1958 must have taken it all in.

After we had converted the administrative block dating from 1958 into the Gateway office building, the dull glass façade of the old transit hall seemed oddly out of place. Of course, we could have chosen to only renovate the façade. But we felt it was our duty to preserve this gem of post-war architecture for future generations.

That too is part of the social responsibility role we wish to take up.

In that year, Brussels hosted the first post-war world exhibition.

Expo 58 would be the highlight of the future optimism of the fifties, an ode to human genius. The new airport, which was inaugurated in June 1958, in every way rivalled the revolutionary pavilions at the world exhibition.

We were going to restore the splendour and beauty of this architectural masterpiece and fit it with the latest technology.

The Belgian architects Maxime Brunfaut, Geo Bontinck and Joseph Moutschen designed a functional, modernist airport complex that was logically constructed around the imposing transit hall. Everything our country wanted to present to the world came together in this hall: architectural daring, artistic courage,

However, the options for the adaptive reuse of the building were limited. The extensive use of aluminium that had enabled the light structure of the hall was at the same time its weak point. The structure was not strong enough to bear the weight of modern fire protection systems or double glazing. It seemed

As before, the enormous glass façade immediately draws the gaze outwards: to the ongoing ballet of aircraft on the ground and in the air.

impossible to adapt the building to the standards of today without compromising the original concept.

Until our engineers came up with a revolutionary idea: reinforce the roof from above using a new steel supporting structure so that the existing roof structure would only have to bear its own weight.

And so it came to pass ...

There can be no doubt that this unique hall will become the coveted location for national and international high-end events.

Moreover, the glorious Skyhall can now be admired by all from the departure hall and the renovated entrance hall.

Now that it was technically feasible, there was nothing to prevent us from restoring the transit hall to its original glory.

With a renovation that does justice to the history of the building and at the same time meets all contemporary standards.

A sustainable redevelopment of a valuable piece of Belgian aviation heritage — that is what it would be.

I would like to thank all the teams who have worked so hard on this incredible project. It has all been more than worthwhile. I invite the reader on a journey through the history and the renovation of this illustrious building!

Henceforth, the renovated transit hall will go through life as the Skyhall events hall. Brussels Airport now has an attraction of stature. Both literally and figuratively. The iconic hall once again exudes the grandeur of the past. Anyone entering the Skyhall today experiences that same overwhelming feeling of lightness and space as did those first visitors back in 1958.

De snelle ontwikkelingen in de burgerluchtvaart na de Tweede Wereldoorlog brachten nieuwe inzichten met zich mee over de eisen waaraan een luchthaven moest voldoen. De toenmalige luchthaven in Melsbroek werd vanaf begin jaren vijftig te klein en beantwoordde niet langer aan de noden van het moderne vliegverkeer.

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’évolution rapide de l’aviation civile a permis de mieux appréhender les exigences auxquelles un aéroport devait répondre. Dès le début des années cinquante, l’aéroport de Melsbroek s’est avéré trop petit pour répondre aux besoins d’un trafic aérien moderne.

Hoewel al sinds 1946 werd gediscussieerd over de bouw van een nieuw luchthaven­ gebouw, zou het nog tot midden jaren vijftig duren voor er ook echt schot in de zaak kwam.

Bien que la construction d’un nouvel aéroport soit à l’étude depuis 1946, il faudra attendre le milieu des années 1950 pour que les choses bougent vraiment.

Met de komst van grotere en snellere vliegtuigen zouden er meer passagiers tegelijk vervoerd kunnen worden, waardoor de prijs naar omlaag zou gaan en vliegen binnen het bereik van steeds meer mensen zou komen.

L’avènement d’avions plus grands et plus rapides permettra de transporter simultanément un plus grand nombre de passagers. Résultat : une baisse des prix et un moyen de transport plus largement accessible.

The rapid developments in civil aviation after the Second World War brought new insights into the demands an airport must satisfy. The then airport in Melsbroek became, from the early fifties, too small and no longer met the needs of modern air transport.

Although there had been discussions about building a new airport terminal since 1946, it would take until the mid-fifties before any real progress was made.

Larger and faster aircraft would allow for more passengers to be carried at a time, resulting in a reduction in the price, so that flying would become accessible to more and more people.

Brussel zou in 1958 als eerste stad na de Tweede Wereldoorlog de wereldtentoonstelling organiseren.

Er werden dus grote aantallen buitenlandse bezoekers verwacht, voornamelijk uit de Verenigde Staten.

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Bruxelles sera la première ville à organiser l’Exposition universelle, en 1958.

Un afflux massif de visiteurs étrangers était attendu, principalement en provenance des États-Unis.

In 1958, Brussels would be the first city after the Second World War to organise the world exhibition. A large number of foreign visitors was expected, mainly from the United States.

Hij werd bijgestaan door de Gentenaar Geo Bontinck en de Luikenaar Joseph Moutschen. Zo representeerde het architectenteam alvast een weloverwogen Belgisch compromis.

If all these challenges were to be met, there was only one solution: a new airport building would have to be ready by the opening of Expo 58.

De keuze viel op het voormalige herto­ gelijk jachtdomein Saventerlo. In maart 1956 werd gestart met de grondwerken van wat moest uitgroeien tot de luchthaven Brussel-Nationaal. De funderingswerken waren afgerond in 1957.

The capacity of the future airport was calculated on the basis of the maximum capacity of the airspace at the time and came out at 3 million passengers per year, a figure that was then thought extremely ambitious. Particularly since most Belgians at the time were happy if they could spend a week at the Belgian seaside. By way of comparison: in 1954 the number of air passengers in Belgium was just 400,643; in 2019, more than 26.4 million passengers passed through Brussels Airport.

L’afflux prévu de visiteurs à l’Exposition universelle de 1958 forcera le gouvernement à réfléchir à un nouvel emplacement pour accueillir un bâtiment aéroportuaire de plus grande capacité. Le choix se portera sur Saventerlo, le domaine de chasse des Ducs de Brabant à Zaventem. En mars 1956 débuteront les travaux de terrassement de ce qui allait devenir l’aéroport de Bruxelles-National. Les travaux de fondation s’achèveront en 1957.

The expected rush of visitors for the Expo 58 world exhibition forced the government to think about a new location for a larger airport building. The choice fell on the former ducal hunting domain Saventerlo in Zaventem. In March 1956, the start was made on what would grow into the Brussels-National Airport. The foundations were completed in 1957.

Het project zelf steunde op een doordacht bouwplan waarbij de architectuur in de eerste plaats functioneel en transparant moest zijn. Internationale voorbeelden zoals de luchthavens van LondenHeathrow en Zürich-Kloten dienden als inspiratie. De resulterende infrastructuur organiseerde zich rond drie belangrijke pijlers: passagiers, vracht en administratie.

Die drie pijlers weerspiegelden zich op hun beurt in drie onderscheiden bouwblokken, waarbij de transithal het hart vormde van de luchthaven en als dusdanig in verbinding stond met alle overige gebouwen.

Le projet lui-même repose sur un plan de construction mûrement réfléchi dont l’architecture doit avant tout briller par sa fonctionnalité et sa transparence. En guise d’inspiration, les architectes se tourneront vers des aéroports internationaux tels que ceux de Londres-Heathrow et de Zurich-Kloten. L’infrastructure qui en résulte s’organisera autour de trois piliers principaux : les passagers, le fret et l’administration. Ces trois piliers se refléteront à leur tour dans trois blocs de construction distincts, le hall de transit formant le cœur de l’aéroport et étant, à ce titre, relié aux autres bâtiments.

In amper dertien maanden tijd slaagden de ingenieurs erin om de bouwwerken zo goed als te voltooien. Op 29 juni 1958 ging de luchthaven open voor het publiek.

Les ingénieurs réussiront un véritable tour de force. Car, en à peine treize mois, les travaux de construction proprement dits seront quasiment terminés. Les portes de l’aéroport s’ouvriront au public le 29 juin 1958.

The project itself was based on a carefully thought-out plan, whereby the architecture had to be first and foremost functional and transparent.

International examples such as the airports of London Heathrow and Zurich Kloten acted as inspiration. The resulting infrastructure was organised around three important pillars: passengers, cargo and administration. These three pillars were reflected in turn in three distinctive building blocks, whereby the transit hall formed the heart of the airport and thus connected with all the other buildings.

IN RECORD TIME The engineers managed to complete the actual construction work in less than thirteen months. The airport opened to the public on 29 June 1958.

The final fitting out of the new airport was not completed until 1961, partly due to a serious fire in November 1958.

Kenmerkend voor de luchthaven­ gebouwen van de eerste naoorlogse generatie zijn de rationele organisatie en de functionele architectuur, waarbij transparantie primeert op massiviteit.

Beton, staal, aluminium en vooral glas kregen daarom een hoofdrol.

Les bâtiments aéroportuaires de la première génération de l’après-guerre se caractérisent par une organisation rationnelle et une architecture fonctionnelle dans laquelle la transparence prime sur la massivité. Le béton, l’acier, l’aluminium et surtout le verre se verront donc investis d’un rôle de premier plan.

Characteristic elements of airport buildings of the first post-war generation include the rational organisation and the functional architecture in which transparency takes precedence over solidity. Concrete, steel, aluminium and especially glass were thus given a leading role.

L’architecture reflète les besoins et les désirs du passager. Hier comme aujourd’hui, une expérience de voyage confortable sera le point central dans l’élaboration de tous les projets de construction.

The architecture was designed to meet passenger needs. Then, as now, a comfortable travel experience was central in developing all the construction plans.

Snelle spoor- en wegverbindingen leiden rechtstreeks van de hoofdstad naar het luchthavengebouw. Ook hierin was Brussel-Nationaal een voorloper.

In Zaventem, the choice was made to build a terminal complex centrally located amid the runways. This functionality was also reflected in the accessibility of the airport. Rapid rail and road connections led straight from the capital to the airport terminal. Here too, Brussels-National airport played a pioneering role.

The three-part terminal complex consisted of a cargo block, a U-shaped administrative block with an integrated control tower, and naturally a passenger block made up of a departure hall, arrival hall and transit hall.

Het nieuwe luchthavengebouw gaf een gevoel van ruimtelijkheid en baadde in het licht. Vanuit de relatieve beslotenheid van de vertrekhal bereikte de passagier via roltrappen de volstrekt transparante transithal.

The new airport building provided a sense of spaciousness and was bathed in light. Using the escalators, the passenger reached the absolute transparency of the transit hall from the relatively enclosed departure hall.

De transithal was verbluffend: deze ruimte van 100 meter lang, 55 meter breed en 18 meter hoog werd overspannen door een gebogen dak uit aluminium. Het dak bestond uit vier delen die elk gedragen werden door twee steunpunten op ongeveer een derde van de breedte.

De individuele delen werden achteraan met trekkers in evenwicht gehouden, waardoor het dak bijna leek te zweven.

The transit hall was astonishing: this space was 100 metres long, 55 metres wide and 18 metres high and an arched roof of aluminium soared over it all. The roof consisted of four sections, each of which rested on two slender supports approximately a third of the way across the width. The individual sections were kept in balance at the rear by tie beams, and this made it seem as if the ceiling was floating.

The self-supporting, angled glass façade spanning 1,800 square metres opened a window to the sky, in which a continuous carefree spectacle was played out by aircraft both in the air and on the ground.

De jaren zestig, met hun grote democratiseringsbewegingen in de maatschappij, kwamen eraan. Binnenkort zou vliegen binnen het bereik van iedereen liggen. De transithal zou zo uitgroeien tot een plek van grote emoties, van spanning en avontuur, van afscheid nemen en blij weerzien.

Les grands mouvements de démocratisation de la société des années soixante sont imminents. Dans peu de temps, l’avion sera à la portée de tout un chacun. De cette façon, la salle de transit devient un lieu empreint de vives émotions et d’aventure, d’au revoir et de joyeuses retrouvailles.

The sixties, with great democratisation movements in society, were approaching.

Shortly, flying would be within everybody’s reach. The transit hall would develop into a place of great emotions, of excitement and adventure, of farewells and happy reunions.

2.2. NIEUW LEVEN INBLAZEN INSUFFLER UNE VIE NOUVELLE REVITALISATION

Na de ingebruikneming van Pier A in 2002 werd de eens zo glorieuze transithal van Brunfaut, Bontinck en Moutschen nog slechts sporadisch gebruikt.

Even vond de ruimte een tweede leven als evenementenhal, maar door de steeds strenger wordende brandveiligheids­ normen duurde dat niet lang.

Het vroegere administratieve blok werd omgevormd tot het moderne kantoor­ gebouw Gateway. Naast de fonkelnieuwe gevel van Gateway viel de dof geworden gevel van de transithal uit de toon. Een grondige renovatie drong zich op.

Het renovatieteam van Brussels Airport Company stond voor een immense uitdaging: de emoties van een historisch gebouw met een glorieus verleden opnieuw tot leven wekken zonder toe te geven op veiligheid en comfort voor de bezoekers van de nieuwe Skyhall. Iedereen die meewerkte aan de renovatie, van architect tot werfleider, moest het beste van zichzelf geven en alle stappen in de verbouwing voortdurend vanuit alle mogelijke standpunten bekijken.

Après l’inauguration et la mise en service de la Jetée A en 2002, la salle de transit de Brunfaut, Bontinck et Moutschen, jadis si glorieuse, ne sera plus utilisée que sporadiquement. Pendant un temps, l’espace aura une seconde vie en tant que site événementiel, mais en raison des normes de sécurité incendie de plus en plus strictes, cela ne durera pas.

Après la rénovation de l’ancien bloc administratif en immeuble de bureaux flambant neuf baptisé Gateway, la façade terne du hall de transit détonne subitement. Une rénovation approfondie s’impose.

L’équipe de rénovation de Brussels Airport Company relèvera un immense défi : faire resurgir les émotions suscitées par un bâtiment historique au passé glorieux, sans compromettre la sécurité et le confort des visiteurs du nouveau Skyhall. Chaque personne collaborant à cette rénovation, de l’architecte au chef de chantier, donnera le meilleur de lui-même et considérant sans relâche toutes les étapes de la rénovation sous tous les angles.

After the inauguration of Pier A in 2002, the once so glorious transit hall of Brunfaut, Bontinck and Moutschen was used only sporadically. It briefly enjoyed a second life as events hall, but, as fire and security standards became ever stricter, this did not last long.

After the conversion of the former administrative block into the modern Gateway office building, the façade of the transit hall now seemed dull and out of place. A thorough renovation became pressing.

The renovation team of Brussels Airport Company were faced with an immense challenge. Reviving the emotions generated by a historic building with a glorious past without compromising the safety and comfort of those visiting the new Skyhall. Everyone collaborating on the renovation, from architect to site manager, had to give it their best and constantly view every step in the rebuild from all possible angles.

De renovatie van de Skyhall bleek op diverse vlakken een zeer atypisch project.

Het gaat dan ook om een zeer uitzonderlijk gebouw, met heel veel specifieke en innovatieve concepten. Een opmerkelijk voorbeeld daarvan is de uitkragende aluminium dakstructuur, die tot op vandaag nog altijd uniek is in haar soort.

Ook de opbouw van de noordgevel, die oorspronkelijk los stond van het dak, bleek origineel in zijn uitvoering.

Le projet de rénovation du Skyhall s’est avéré très atypique à plusieurs égards.

Il s’agit d’un bâtiment exceptionnel, avec de nombreux concepts spécifiques et innovants. Un exemple remarquable en est la structure de toit en porte à faux en aluminium, qui est aujourd’hui encore, unique en son genre. La structure de la façade nord, qui était à l’origine séparée du toit, s’est également révélée originale dans son exécution.

The renovation of the Skyhall turned out to be a highly atypical project in several respects. The subject is an exceptional building, with many specific and innovative concepts. A striking example of this is the cantilevered aluminium roof structure, which is still today unique in its kind. The construction of the north facade, which used to be separate from the roof, also proved to be pretty original.

Naarmate de voorbereidingen van de renovatie vorderden en de plannen almaar meer in detail werden bestudeerd, groeide de verwondering over en het ontzag voor de durf en innovatie van het concept in 1958.

À mesure que les préparatifs de la rénovation progressaient et que les plans étaient étudiés plus en détail, l’admiration devant l’audace et l’innovation du concept de 1958 grandissait.

As the preparations for the renovation progressed and the plans were studied in greater detail, the admiration of and awe for the daring and innovation of the concept of 1958 grew.

PATRIMOINE

Erfgoedarchitect en professor emeritus Jos Vandenbreeden spreekt daarom over een onovertroffen staaltje van bouwkunst: ‘De transithal was oorspronkelijk — en is nog steeds — het kroonstuk van de luchthaven, zowel op het vlak van de constructie als van de vormgeving. In de huidige configuratie van het luchthavencomplex bevindt de hal zich op een interessante plaats met bijzonder veel potentieel. Een nieuwe invulling als evenementenhal leek dan ook de meest logische herbestemming voor zover de eigenheid en de oorspronkelijke belevingswaarde van het gebouw werden gerespecteerd.’

Selon Jos Vandenbreeden, architecte patrimonial et professeur émérite, il s’agit d’un concentré d’architecture inégalé : « la salle de transit était à l’origine — et est toujours — le joyau de l’aéroport, tant en matière de construction que de design. Dans la configuration actuelle du complexe aéroportuaire, elle se situe dans un endroit intéressant avec beaucoup de potentiel. Une réaffectation de la salle en espace événementiel semblait dès lors une destination logique, à condition toutefois de respecter l’unicité et l’agrément initial du bâtiment ».

Bij dit project was het net omgekeerd: bij elke studie werd er individueel gekeken naar wat haalbaar was in de renovatie.

Het bestaande gebouw bepaalde dus wat mogelijk was.

HERITAGE

Dans un projet de construction classique, les architectes et les entrepreneurs partent d’un cahier des charges clair, sur lequel se basent toutes les études ultérieures. Dans le cadre de ce projet, cela a été l’inverse : chaque étude a été examinée individuellement pour voir ce qui était faisable dans la rénovation. Le bâtiment existant a donc déterminé le champ des possibles.

Heritage architect and emeritus professor Jos Vandenbreeden talks about an unsurpassed piece of architectural art: “The transit hall was originally — and still is — the crown jewel of the airport, both in terms of construction and design. In the current configuration of the airport complex, the hall is located at an interesting place with enormous potential.

A new use as events hall therefore seems the most logical redevelopment as long as the uniqueness and the original experiential value of the building is respected.’

In a classic building project, architects and contractors start from a clear schedule of requirements on which all further studies are based. In this project, things were turned on their head: each study reviewed individually what could prove feasible in the renovation. The existing building thus determined what was possible.

DARING SOLUTIONS

De versteviging van het dak is een mooi voorbeeld van hoe je soms buiten de gebaande paden moet denken om een oplossing te vinden. Jarenlang heeft Brussels Airport Company zich gebogen over de problematiek van de aluminium dakstructuur die qua belasting op zijn maximum zat en daarom niet voorzien kon worden van extra isolatie en technieken.

Le renforcement de la toiture est un bon exemple de la façon dont il faut parfois sortir des sentiers battus pour trouver une solution. Pendant des années, Brussels Airport Company s’est penchée sur le problème de la structure de la toiture en aluminium qui, concernant la charge, était à son maximum et ne pouvait donc pas être dotée d’une isolation et de techniques supplémentaires.

The reinforcement of the roof is a good example of how you sometimes have to think outside the box if you want to come up with a solution. For years, Brussels Airport Company had been mulling over the problem of the aluminium roof structure which, in terms of load, was at its maximum and therefore could not be fitted with additional insulation and technical installations.

Au lieu de se concentrer sur le renfor­ cement du toit en aluminium existant, une idée s’est petit à petit imposée : l’ajout d’un élément supplémentaire. Le raisonnement est ingénieux de simplicité : si la structure existante n’a pas une capacité portante suffisante et que des colonnes ne peuvent être ajoutées, il convient alors de renforcer simplement la structure par le haut.

Une idée que Brussels Airport Company a fait développer en détail. Il est rapidement apparu que ce projet apparemment inhabituel tenait la route.

Instead of concentrating on reinforcing the existing aluminium roof, the idea was broached of adding something extra to it.

The train of thought behind this was genius in its simplicity: if the existing structure had insufficient load-bearing capacity and we are not allowed to construct additional columns, then we will simply have to strengthen the construction from above.

An idea Brussels Airport Company had worked out in detail. It soon transpired that this seemingly uncommon idea could actually have some traction.

In plaats van zich toe te spitsen op het verstevigen van het bestaande aluminium dak, ontstond de denkpiste om iets extra’s toe te voegen. De gedachtegang daarbij is geniaal in zijn eenvoud: als de bestaande structuur onvoldoende draagvermogen heeft en we geen kolommen mogen bijzetten, dan verstevigen we de structuur toch gewoon van bovenaf. Een idee dat Brussels Airport Company in detail liet uitwerken. Al snel bleek dat er effectief muziek zat in dit ogenschijnlijk nietalledaagse plan.

Nog voor je eind jaren vijftig het vliegtuig opstapte, kreeg je als reiziger in de transithal een adembenemend uitzicht op het vliegveld. De grote glazen gevel zoog de kijklustigen van overal aan om het schouwspel van licht, lucht en beweging te bewonderen. De transithal vormde zo het venster op de wereld die iedereen wilde ontdekken. Een glazen wand als uitkijkpost op de vliegtuigen. Zo fascinerend dat je er stil van werd en de drukte om je heen leek te verstommen.

Niet alleen het uitzicht was verbluffend, ook het ontwerp van de gevel op zich was heel bijzonder. De hele partij glas leunde als het ware tegen het dak. Het leek alsof alles gewoon zweefde. Natuurlijk was dit alleen schijn: de onderste helft van

Before you boarded your flight at the end of the fifties, you were treated, as passenger in the transit hall, to a breathtaking view of the airport.

The enormous glass façade attracted spectators from everywhere to admire the intricate choreography of light, sky and movement. The transit hall was a window to the world that everybody wanted to discover. A glass wall as a vantage point for viewing the aircraft. The view was so captivating that the hustle and bustle was muffled, and one fell silent.

And it was not just the view that was amazing: the design of the façade was in itself remarkable. The whole glass wall seemed, as it were, to lean against the roof. Everything seemed to be floating. Of

Door openingen tussen het plafond en de gevel vonden vogels gemakkelijk hun weg naar een hal vol planten waar ze graag in vertoefden. Luchtvaarthistoricus Frans Van Humbeek tekende op hoe Amerikaanse toeristen zich verwonderden over de vele mussen die vrij door de transithal scheerden. Het gaf de ruimte een vriendelijke, haast zuiderse uitstraling.

Ook in de gerenoveerde Skyhall zal de bezoeker aangenaam verrast worden. De transithal krijgt een nieuwe functie als de uitgelezen locatie voor bedrijfspresentaties, recepties, concerten, shows en productvoorstellingen. Kortom, Brussels Airport Company opent de deuren van een historisch stuk erfgoed voor unieke evenementen.

Frans Van Humbeek, historien de l’aviation, a évoqué comment les touristes américains s’émerveillaient du spectacle des nombreux moineaux qui voletaient librement dans la salle de transit.

Ils conféraient à l’espace un caractère convivial, presque méridional.

Le Skyhall surprendra agréablement le visiteur. La salle de transit rénovée se dote d’une nouvelle fonction en tant que lieu de choix pour les présentations d’entreprises, réceptions, concerts, spectacles et lancements de produits.

The renovated Skyhall will also pleasantly surprise the visitor. The transit hall is being given a new function as the ideal location for corporate presentations, receptions, concerts, shows, product presentations.

In short, Brussels Airport Company is opening the doors of an historic piece of heritage to unique events.

Het prachtige uitzicht op het tarmac, met het vliegverkeer als levend decor, verveelt nooit. De oorspronkelijke bedoeling van de architecten in 1958 is in ere hersteld. Het immense panorama op een buitenwereld die nooit stilstaat, zal elke gast in de Skyhall verbluffen.

Tijdens de verbouwingen zijn de oude ramen in de transithal vervangen door hoogrendementsglas.

Temperatuurschommelingen behoren hiermee tot het verleden. Het glas uit de jaren vijftig vervangen door een duurzaam en ecologisch verantwoord alternatief, was een uitdaging op zich. De structuur van de glazen gevel kon het gewicht van dat hoogrendementsglas maar gedeeltelijk dragen. Het grootste glasraam weegt ongeveer duizend kilogram. Een extra dwarsbalk, discreet aangebracht tussen de grote en kleine glaspanelen, was uiteindelijk de oplossing.

En un mot, Brussels Airport Company ouvre les portes d’un patrimoine historique à des événements à caractère unique.

La façade vitrée attire toujours tous les regards dans le nouveau Skyhall. On ne se lasse pas de cette vue imprenable sur le tarmac, avec le trafic aérien en toile de fond. L’intention originale des architectes en 1958 a été reconstituée dans toute sa splendeur. L’immense panorama sur un monde extérieur toujours en mouvement éblouira chaque hôte.

Lors des rénovations, les anciennes fenêtres de la salle de transit ont été remplacées par du verre à haut rendement énergétique. Les fluctuations de température appartiennent ainsi au passé.

Remplacer le verre des années 1950 par un substitut durable et écologique constituait un défi en soi. La structure de la façade vitrée ne pouvait supporter que partiellement le poids de ce verre à haut rendement. La plus grande vitre pèse environ 1 tonne. Une traverse supplémentaire, placée discrètement entre les grands et les petits panneaux de verre, a permis de résoudre l’équation.

The glass façade will remain the eyecatcher in the new Skyhall. The amazing view across the tarmac with the air traffic as a living background never gets boring.

The original intention of the architects back in 1958 has been restored. The immense panorama onto a world outside that never stands still will amaze every guest in the Skyhall.

During the renovation, the old windows in the transit hall were replaced with high-performance glass. Fluctuations in temperature are now a thing of the past. Replacing the glass from the fifties with a sustainable and environmentally responsible alternative was a challenge in itself. The structure of the glass façade could only partially bear the weight of the high-efficiency glass. The largest windowpane weights around 1,000 kilograms. The solution was ultimately to discretely place an additional cross beam between the larger and smaller glass panels.

De glazen gevel en het dak moesten los van elkaar kunnen bewegen. Bij harde wind of hevige sneeuwval konden ze zo allebei gemakkelijk die weersomstandigheden weerstaan. Brussels Airport Company liet daarom een modern ontwerp van tochtborstels plaatsen, zodat er een luchtdichte aansluiting is tussen de gevel en het dak.

Het hoogrendementsglas verbetert ook aanzienlijk de akoestiek binnen in het gebouw. De nieuwe glazen gevel zorgt zo voor een aangename beleving bij de bezoeker.

Het warmteverlies in de nieuwe Skyhall is tot een minimum herleid. Voor de verwarming van het onderste niveau is er ook na de renovatie gebruikgemaakt van het originele verwarmingssysteem met convectoren in de plinten. Recyclage die je niet koud laat dus.

In this way, the glass façade or the roof could easily withstand adverse weather conditions, such as hard winds or heavy snowfall. Brussels Airport Company therefore had a modern design of draughtproofing brushes installed to ensure an airtight joint between the façade and the roof.

3.2. ZWEVEND TUSSEN DRIE GEBOUWEN EN LÉVITATION ENTRE TROIS BÂTIMENTS FLOATING BETWEEN THREE BUILDINGS

Passagiers die de transithal in 1958 binnen­kwamen, waren meteen overweldigd door het immense dak dat de blik onmiddellijk naar boven trok.

Het gevoel een onbeperkte ruimte binnen te treden, gaf meteen zin om nog verder te reizen. Het was alsof de architecten wisten dat het hoge plafond bij alle mensen, van jong tot oud, het verlangen zou aanwakkeren om te vliegen.

Ook vandaag nodigt de vorm van het dak en de hoogte van het plafond iedereen uit om weg te dromen. De gerenoveerde Skyhall is het visitekaartje voor wie evenementen wil organiseren die verder gaan dan het alledaagse. De ruimte onder het dak is de plaats waar miljoenen passagiers zich ooit klaarmaakten voor hun vlucht. En onder dit dak hebben ontelbaar veel Belgen ongetwijfeld zitten mijmeren over hun eerste vliegtuigreis. Dit dak en de grootse ruimte eronder laten niemand onberoerd.

Les passagers qui entraient dans la salle de transit en 1958 étaient d’emblée impressionnés par l’immense toit qui attirait spontanément les regards vers le haut. Le sentiment d’entrer dans un espace infini suscitait immédiatement l’envie de pousser le voyage encore plus loin.

C’était comme si les architectes savaient que la hauteur du plafond aiguillonnerait l’envie des jeunes et des moins jeunes, de s’envoler.

Ce constat reste d’actualité, puisque la forme du toit et la hauteur de plafond invitent toujours les visiteurs à rêver d’horizons lointains. Le Skyhall rénové est la carte de visite de ceux qui veulent organiser des événements hors du commun. Un lieu chargé d’histoire où des millions de passagers se sont préparés pour leur vol. Où d’innombrables Belges ont sans doute envisagé leur premier voyage en avion. Ce toit et le grand espace qu’il abrite ne laissent personne indifférent.

Passengers entering the transit hall in 1958 were immediately overwhelmed by the immense roof that drew the gaze upwards. The feeling that you were entering an endless space made you want to travel even farther. It was as if the architects knew that the high ceiling would induce in everyone, old and young, the desire to take to the skies.

Even today, the shape of the roof and the height of the ceiling make visitors daydream about future travels.

The renovated Skyhall is the ideal venue for events that are out of the ordinary.

The space under the roof is where millions of passengers have prepared for their flight. And under this roof, countless Belgians have undoubtedly sat musing about their first flight. This roof and the area under it never fail to cast their magic.

Het dak van de Skyhall is dan ook een van de meest hoogstaande en innoverende voorbeelden van de bouwkunst uit de naoorlogse periode in België.

De funderingen waren gelegd en het aangrenzende kantoorgebouw stond al recht, toen in april 1957 werd gekozen voor een eerder futuristische dakconstructie in aluminium, gebaseerd op de vorm van een vliegtuigvleugel.

De uitvoering van de constructie op de werf was ingenieus en spectaculair. De nauwgezette planning was minstens even indrukwekkend. Het volledige vakwerk tussen de spanten werd op de grond gemonteerd: een gebinte van maar liefst 25 meter breed en 50 meter lang lag zo klaar. Met takels aan vier verticale torens trok men deze constructie omhoog.

De A-kolommen die vasthingen aan de spanten werden in één beweging mee omhoog gehesen.

Le toit du Skyhall est un des exemples les plus prestigieux et les plus innovants de l’architecture d’après-guerre en Belgique.

The roof of the Skyhall is one of the most advanced and innovative examples of postwar architecture in Belgium.

Les fondations étaient posées et l’immeuble de bureaux attenant déjà érigé, lorsqu’en avril 1957, une construction de toit en aluminium plutôt futuriste, basée sur la forme d’une aile d’avion, a été choisie.

The foundations had already been laid and the adjacent office building was standing when, in April 1957, a decision was made to use a rather futuristic roof construction in aluminium, based on the shape of an aircraft wing.

L’exécution de la construction sur le site a été ingénieuse et spectaculaire. La planification minutieuse était au moins tout aussi impressionnante. L’ensemble des poutres à treillis entre les fermes a été monté au sol : une charpente d’au moins 25 mètres de large et 50 mètres de long. Cette construction a été hissée d’une pièce à l’aide de treuils placés sur quatre tours verticales. Les colonnes en A, qui étaient attachées aux fermes, ont été hissées du même coup.

The construction on site was ingenious and spectacular. The meticulous planning was almost as impressive. The entire framework between the trusses was put together on the ground to constitute a roof segment of no less than 25 metres wide and 50 metres long. This construction was then lifted with hoists on four vertical towers. The A-shaped columns that were attached to the trusses were lifted in one go.

Om de originele aanblik van de transithal na de renovatie te behouden, kwam Brussels Airport Company met het idee om het dak van bovenaf te versterken met stalen spanten. Het is een innovatieve manier om het originele concept van het dak te behouden en tegelijk te voldoen aan de strengste brand- en veiligheidsvoorschriften.

Afin de préserver l’aspect d’origine de la salle de transit après la rénovation, Brussels Airport Company a eu l’idée de renforcer le toit par le haut, avec des fermes d’acier. Une façon innovante de préserver le concept original de la toiture, tout en respectant les réglementations les plus strictes en matière de protection antiincendie et de sécurité.

In order to preserve the original appearance of the transit hall, Brussels Airport Company came up with the idea of reinforcing the roof from above, using steel trusses. It is an innovative way of preserving the original concept of the roof while simultaneously meeting the strictest fire and safety regulations.

Op basis van heel nauwkeurige opmetingen monteerden arbeiders de spanten al vooraf op maat. De onderdelen van de spanten waren al in het atelier gelast, zodat de constructie ter plaatse vlug in elkaar kon worden gezet.

Het was de bedoeling om het spant van 53,5 ton in één keer op te hijsen. Maar dat was gemakkelijker gezegd dan gedaan.

Hoogtewerken op een luchthaven blijven een heikele zaak omdat de bouwkranen op geen enkele manier de opstijgende en landende vliegtuigen mogen hinderen.

Om de planning niet in het gedrang te brengen, werd al in een vroege fase van het project overleg gepleegd met luchtruimbeheerder skeyes voor de plaatsing van een hijskraan die tot 700 ton kon heffen. Na bijkomende berekeningen bleek dat zelfs die kraan het spant niet in één keer kon ophijsen.

Sur la base de mesures très précises, les ouvriers ont soudé les parties de fermes à l’atelier. Ce pré-assemblage a permis un montage rapide sur le chantier.

Il était prévu de hisser la ferme de 53,5 tonnes en une seule fois. Plus facile à dire qu’à faire. Les travaux en hauteur dans un aéroport constituent toujours une activité délicate, car les grues de chantier ne doivent en aucun cas gêner le décollage et l’atterrissage des avions.

Afin de ne pas compromettre la planification des travaux, skeyes — le gestionnaire de l’espace aérien — a été consulté à un stade précoce du projet concernant l’installation d’une grue pouvant soulever jusqu’à 700 tonnes. Workers assembled the trusses in advance, based on highly accurate measurements.

The sections of the trusses were welded in the workshop, so that the construction could be quickly assembled on site.

The idea was to hoist the truss, weighing 53.4 tonnes, in one go. But that was easier said than done. Working at heights at an airport remains a tricky business, because cranes must never in any way obstruct aircraft landing or taking off.

In order to ensure that the planning was not compromised, consultation was undertaken with air traffic controller skeyes early in the project for the installation of a crane that could hoist loads up to 700 tonnes. Additional calculations, however, showed that even that crane would be unable to hoist the truss into place in one go.

Eind jaren vijftig stapte de passagier het luchthavengebouw binnen via een kleine inkomhal. Die was gebouwd tegen de gevel van de transithal.

Oorspronkelijk waren beide gebouwen dus op een natuurlijke en functionele manier met elkaar verbonden.

À la fin des années 1950, les passagers entraient dans le bâtiment de l’aéroport par un petit hall d’entrée.

Om de bezoekers te verrassen was de inkomhal opgevat als een voorportaal van de transithal. De inkomhal was doelbewust minder hoog ontworpen, zodat de grandeur van de transithal je meteen zou overweldigen als je binnenkwam.

Een grote glazen pui boven de inkomhal zorgde er mee voor dat het daglicht altijd rijkelijk de transithal binnenstroomde.

Via de inkomhal konden de reizigers niet alleen de transithal bereiken, maar ook het toenmalige treinstation.

Afin de surprendre les visiteurs, il a été conçu comme un vestibule de la salle de transit. The entrance hall was conceived as an antechamber to the transit hall in order to surprise visitors. The entrance hall was intentionally less high, so that the grandeur of the transit hall would immediately overwhelm you when you entered.

The façade above the entrance hall was made of glass to ensure that daylight could flood into the transit hall. The entrance hall not only gave passengers access to the transit hall, but also to the train station.

Samen met de herbestemming van de transithal koos Brussels Airport Company er ook voor om in de nieuwe Skyhall de inkomhal weer in al haar glorie te herstellen. De volledige gevel boven de inkomhal krijgt opnieuw glas, zodat het dak weer zijn zwevende karakter kan tonen.

De lage ruimte van de inkomhal vormt nog altijd een logische overgang van binnen naar buiten. Op die manier wordt de oorspronkelijke gedachtegang van Brunfaut en zijn collega’s gerespecteerd: de Skyhall als orgelpunt van de architecturale wandeling die de bezoeker door de gebouwen brengt.

Parallèlement à la réaffectation de la salle de transit, Brussels Airport Company a choisi de redonner son lustre d’antan au hall d’entrée dans le nouveau Skyhall.

L’ensemble de la façade surplombant le hall d’entrée sera à nouveau recouvert de verre afin que le toit puisse produire le même effet qu’à l’origine. La partie basse du hall d’entrée constitue toujours une transition logique de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur. De cette façon, la philosophie initiale du trio d’architectes est respectée : le Skyhall est devenu le point d’orgue de l’itinéraire architectural emprunté par le visiteur dans les bâtiments.

When redeveloping the transit hall, Brussels Airport Company opted to restore the entrance hall to the new Skyhall to its former glory. The entire façade above the entrance hall will be re-glazed so that the roof can again reveal its floating character. The low space of the entrance hall still forms a logical transition from inside to outside. In this way, the original thinking of Brunfaut and his colleagues has been respected: the Skyhall as climax to the architectural stroll the passenger undertakes through the buildings.

Thanks to the renovation of the entrance hall, the original passageway to the railway station could be reopened. New escalators were installed and the area was designed in such a way that the spatial experience of the past was restored.

3.4. UIT HET GOEDE HOUT GESNEDEN UNE PARURE DE BOIS THE WARM GLOW OF WOOD

Passagiers konden bij de opening van de transithal nog niet vermoeden hoe mooi en elegant een van de binnengevels zou worden. Pas later, in 1961, toen de volledige gevel was afgewerkt in hout, sprong hij door deze gewaagde materiaalkeuze onmiddellijk in het oog.

Het hout contrasteerde prachtig met de overige gebruikte materialen zoals aluminium, natuursteen en glas.

Au moment où la salle de transit a été inaugurée, les passagers ne pouvaient soupçonner la beauté et l’élégance d’un de ses murs intérieurs, encore inachevé.

Ce n’est qu’en 1961, lorsqu’il fut recouvert de bois, que le choix de ce matériau audacieux a attiré l’attention. Il contrastait magnifiquement avec les autres matériaux utilisés, tels que l’aluminium, la pierre naturelle et le verre.

Typisch voor de jaren vijftig maakte men voor de gevelaankleding gebruik van multiplex: vele dunne laagjes fineerhout die met elkaar verkleefd werden tot een dikkere plaat.

Très en vogue dans les années 1950, le contreplaqué a été utilisé pour habiller la surface : de nombreuses couches minces de placage étaient collées ensemble pour former une plaque plus épaisse.

Onder de houten gevelconstructie vond je winkeltjes. En in de houten bekleding zelf waren ramen voorzien waardoor de medewerkers vanaf het administratief gebouw konden binnenkijken in de transithal.

When the transit hall was first opened, passengers could not have suspected how beautiful and elegant one of the interior façades would be.

Only later, in 1961, when the façade had been entirely clad in wood, did it immediately attract attention with its daring choice of material. The wood formed a beautiful contrast to the other materials used, such as aluminium, natural stone and glass.

The façade is covered with plywood, a material typically used in the fifties.

The material is built up of thin layers of veneer, glued together to form a thicker sheet of wood.

Shops were located below the wooden façade construction. And windows were provided in the wood cladding itself so that the employees could look into the transit hall from the administrative building.

De wand in hout gaf de transithal een gezellige sfeer. Reizigers voelden zich snel thuis in een warme omgeving waar ze nog even konden winkelen of verpozen voor ze het vliegtuig opstapten.

Voor de binnenwand werd naast het hout ook Belgische mergelsteen uit Oost-Limburg gebruikt, een zachte kalksteen die vaak in vierkanthoeves te zien is. Die mergelsteen bracht een specifieke Belgische toets aan in het gebouw en onderstreepte het belang dat de architecten toen hechtten aan binnenlandse materialen.

La parure de bois conférait une atmosphère chaleureuse à la salle de transit. Les voyageurs se sont rapidement sentis chez eux — dans un environnement convivial — où ils pouvaient effectuer quelques achats ou se détendre avant de prendre l’avion.

Outre le bois, une pierre marneuse de l’est du Limbourg a été utilisée pour la façade intérieure, une pierre calcaire tendre souvent présente dans les fermes en carré.

Cette pierre ajoutait une touche belge spécifique au bâtiment et soulignait l’importance que les architectes attachaient à l’époque aux matériaux régionaux.

The wood-clad wall helped to create a convivial atmosphere in the transit hall.

Passengers quickly felt at home in the warm surroundings where they could rest for a moment or shop before boarding their flight.

The interior wall made use not only of wood but also Belgian marlstone, quarried in East Limburg; it is a soft limestone that is often featured in courtyard farmhouses.

That marlstone added a specific Belgian touch to the building and underlined the importance that the architects attached at the time to local materials.

Tijdens de renovatie wilde Brussels Airport Company de oorspronkelijke mooie houten wandbekleding behouden. De wand was goed bewaard en het hout in goede staat. Jammer genoeg was de unieke dakconstructie hier het struikelblok.

De oplossing bestond er uiteindelijk in om een voorzetwand in sapelli-hout te bouwen die identiek oogt aan de originele wand. Dat bood tegelijk de kans om de akoestiek in de Skyhall te verbeteren.

Au cours de la rénovation, Brussels Airport Company a voulu conserver le beau revêtement mural d’origine. Le mur était bien conservé et le bois était en bon état. Malheureusement, la construction inédite du toit a constitué une pierre d’achoppement.

La solution a finalement été de construire une paroi en sapelli, une essence dont l’aspect est identique au mur d’origine.

Dans le même temps, cette solution a permis d’améliorer l’acoustique du Skyhall.

During the renovation, Brussels Airport Company wanted to retain the original, beautiful wall-cladding. The wall had been well preserved and the wood was in good condition. Unfortunately, the unique roof construction proved a stumbling block.

The solution was to construct a false wall of sapele wood which was identical to the original wall. That also provided the opportunity of improving the acoustics in the Skyhall.

Het zal weinig bezoekers aan de luchthaven ooit zijn opgevallen, maar in de transithal van 1958 zat aan elke kant wel een glaspartij, zodat de hele hal baadde in het licht. Om de ruimtelijkheid van vroeger op te roepen, werd de gevel tijdens de renovatie waar mogelijk opnieuw opengewerkt.

Peu de visiteurs de l’aéroport l’auront sans doute remarqué, mais le hall de transit de 1958 présentait une baie vitrée de chaque côté, de sorte que la salle entière était baignée de lumière. Afin d’évoquer la spatialité de jadis, la façade a été rouverte, là où c’était possible.

De grootsheid van de transithal voelde je het best vanop de passerelle.

Het was de ideale plek om de hal en het daarnaast gelegen tarmac volledig te bewonderen.

C’est de la passerelle que l’on ressentait le mieux la majestuosité de la salle de transit. L’endroit idéal pour admirer toute l’étendue du hall et du tarmac tout proche.

De beelden van enthousiast wuivende mensen en van de mijmerende passanten op de passerelle zijn ondertussen historisch. Zeer kenmerkend voor het uitzicht waren de borstweringen in aluminium, met V-vormige spijlen en een opvallende staalblauwe handgreep.

Gelijkaardige V-vormige spijlen zijn trouwens ook terug te vinden in de trapbekleding van het Atomium.

Les photos de gens enthousiastes faisant signe de la main et de passants déambulant, songeurs, sur la passerelle, font aujourd’hui partie du passé. Les inimitables parapets en aluminium, leurs barreaux en V et leur étonnante main courante bleu acier ont marqué cet espace de leur empreinte. On retrouve des barreaux en V similaires dans l’habillage des escaliers de l’Atomium.

You could best feel the enormity of the transit hall from the suspended walkway. It was the ideal place from which to admire the hall and the adjacent tarmac.

The pictures of enthusiastically waving people and of musing passers-by on the walkway have become historical. The balustrade in aluminium, with V-shaped spindles and a striking steel-blue hand rail was characteristic of the time. Similar V-shaped spindles can also be found in the stairways of the Atomium.

Gelukkig waren er bij de start van het renovatieproject nog voldoende oorspronkelijke borstweringen om de passerelle ermee te voorzien.

De duurzaamste oplossing om de borstweringen te hergebruiken, was meteen ook de mooiste manier om alles te renoveren.

Brussels Airport Company wilde ook de passerelle volgens het oorspronkelijke concept herstellen en koos voor de illusie van een zwevende passerelle.

Heureusement, au début du projet de rénovation, il y avait encore suffisamment de parapets d’origine pour en équiper la passerelle. La solution la plus durable et la plus élégante pour la réutilisation des parapets était de tout rénover.

Fortunately, at the start of the renovation project there were sufficient original balustrades left for the walkway. The most sustainable solution for reusing the balustrades was also the finest way of renovating everything.

Brussels Airport Company entendait également restaurer la passerelle selon son concept d’origine et a opté pour l’illusion d’une passerelle flottante.

Ter hoogte van de vroegere trapverbinding werd aan de passerelle een extra stuk vloerplaat afgebroken, om plaats te maken voor een nieuwe monumentale trap. Door deze ingreep is de ruimtelijke ervaring van de passerelle op die plaats nu volledig in haar oorspronkelijke staat hersteld.

Omdat de passerelle niet langer opgehangen kon worden aan het dak, werd een nieuwe structuur gebouwd waarop de passerelle rust.

3.6. OPVALLEN IN STIJL MARQUER L’IMAGINATION AVEC ÉLÉGANCE STRIKING IN STYLE

Wel was er al in het openingsjaar van de nieuwe luchthaven een taxfreeshop aanwezig in de transithal: de Sky Shop.

Belastingvrije winkels waren in die tijd nog revolutionair, die in Zaventem was bij de eerste ter wereld!

Door de sobere inrichting van de transithal kon je de ruimte in al haar grootsheid ervaren.

Dès l’année de son inauguration, le nouvel aéroport comptait déjà une boutique hors taxes dans la salle de transit : le Sky Shop. Les boutiques hors taxes étaient encore révolutionnaires à l’époque. Celle de Zaventem était parmi les premières au monde !

L’aménagement épuré de la salle de transit permettait aux visiteurs de ressentir l’espace dans toute sa grandeur.

From the year that the new airport opened, a tax-free shop was present in the transit hall: the Sky Shop.

Tax-free shops were still a revolutionary concept at the time. The shop in Zaventem was among the very first in the world!

The sober design of the transit hall allowed you to experience the space in all its vastness.

Ook opvallend aanwezig waren de tv-schermen met vluchtinformatie die op elegante houten pootjes in kruisvorm de lucht in staken. Met deze vluchtinformatieschermen was de luchthaven Brussel-Nationaal de eerste in Europa.

Extra informatie kreeg je aan de infobalie, die de hal mee haar typische aanblik bood.

Les écrans de télévision avec des infor­ mations sur les vols, étaient placés sur d’élégants pieds en bois cruciformes, qui les hissaient en hauteur, devenant ainsi autant d’accroches visuelles. L’aéroport de Bruxelles-National a été le premier, en Europe, à proposer ces écrans présentant des informations de vol.

Pour obtenir plus d’informations, les voyageurs devaient se rendre au guichet d’information, qui conférait au hall son caractère typique.

The TV screens with flight information, which rose into the air on elegantly crossed wooden legs were another striking novelty. Brussels-National airport was the first in Europe to feature these flight information screens.

Additional information could be obtained from the info desk, which contributed to typical appearance of the hall.

Pas in de eerste helft van de jaren zestig werd er een groot podium gebouwd om de ruimte wat kleiner te doen lijken.

Het podium, bestaande uit asymmetrische rechthoeken, was te betreden via enkele lage treden en bekleed met een tapijt van zwart-witte vierkanten. Naast terugspringende stukken waren er ook zones met keien en planten.

In de hal verschenen de kenmerkende S3-loungezetels van de Belgische ontwerper Alfred Hendrickx.

Ce n’est que dans la première moitié des années 1960 qu’un grand podium a été construit pour réduire un peu cette sensation d’espace infini. Composé de rectangles asymétriques, ce podium était accessible par plusieurs marches basses et recouvert d’un tapis en damier noir et blanc. En plus des parties reculées, il y avait aussi des zones avec des galets et des plantes.

Les sièges lounge S3, caractéristiques du créateur belge Alfred Hendrickx, ont alors fait leur apparition dans cette salle.

It was only in the first half of the sixties that a large stage was built to make the space seem smaller. The stage, consisting of asymmetrical rectangles, could be reached via several low steps and was fitted with a carpet of black and white squares. There were receding areas and also places with rocks and plants.

The characteristic S3 lounge chairs by the Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx also appeared in the hall.

Het cassetteplafond zag eruit als een soort baldakijn, met vierkante vlakken die afgebakend werden door bekleding in opvallende kleuren. Afhankelijk van de richting waarin je naar het plafond keek, was het geel of rood.

Le plafond à caissons ressemblait à une sorte de baldaquin, avec des surfaces carrées soulignées par un habillage arborant des couleurs vives. Selon l’angle d’observation, le plafond apparaissait jaune ou rouge.

The coffered ceiling looked like some sort of canopy, with square recesses delineated by aluminium coverings in striking colours. The ceiling appeared to be either red or yellow, depending on the direction in which you looked at it.

Voor de inrichting van de nieuwe hal werd teruggegrepen naar het originele concept van de ‘lege’ hal uit 1958. Op zich hoeft die keuze niet te verwonderen, gezien de herbestemming tot evenementenhal: elke gebruiker heeft nu de keuze en mogelijkheid om eigen interieurelementen toe te voegen al naargelang het event.

L’aménagement du nouveau hall s’est inspiré du hall «vide» de 1958. En soi, ce choix n’a rien de surprenant, compte tenu de la destination événementielle des lieux : chaque utilisateur a désormais le choix et la possibilité d’ajouter ses propres éléments intérieurs, en fonction de l’événement.

The design of the new hall returns to the original concept of the ‘empty’ hall of 1958.

This choice should not, in itself, cause surprise, given its reuse as an events hall: every user can have the hall decorated to their own liking depending on the event.

De oorspronkelijke verlichtingsarmaturen werden opnieuw gespoten.

Les luminaires d’origine sont repeints.

The original light fixtures were resprayed.

Het basisidee van de hele renovatie was om zo duurzaam mogelijk te werken. Wat bewaard kon worden, werd bewaard. Wat vervangen moest worden, gebeurde zo getrouw mogelijk naar het origineel.

Het beste voorbeeld daarvan is het verlaagde plafond, waarvan de gele en rode vinnen stuk voor stuk bewaard bleven. De witte plafondtegels werden vervangen door nieuwe tegels van eenzelfde formaat en met een identiek patroon. De verlichtingstoestellen kregen een stevige schoonmaakbeurt, een nieuw likje verf en ledverlichtingselementen. Het totaalbeeld van het nieuwe plafond is zo dus perfect te vergelijken met het uitzicht van het oorspronkelijke plafond.

L’idée de base de l’ensemble de la rénovation était de s’inscrire dans la perspective la plus durable possible. Ce qui pouvait être préservé l’a été. Ce qui devait être remplacé l’a été aussi, tout en restant aussi fidèle que possible à l’original.

The basic idea throughout the renovation was to work in as sustainable a way as possible. Anything that could be preserved was preserved. Whatever had to be replaced was done as faithfully as possible to the original.

Le meilleur exemple en est le plafond suspendu, dont les lames jaunes et rouges ont été conservées une à une. Les dalles blanches du plafond ont été remplacées par de nouvelles dalles de même taille et avec un motif identique. Les luminaires ont bénéficié d’un nettoyage en profondeur, d’une nouvelle couche de peinture et ont été équipés d’éléments d’éclairage à LED. L’aspect général du nouveau plafond est ainsi parfaitement comparable à l’aspect du plafond d’origine.

The best example of this is the suspended ceiling, where the yellow and red fins have all been preserved. The white ceiling tiles have been replaced with new tiles with the same dimensions and with an identical pattern. The lighting fixtures were subjected to a thorough cleaning and were given a new coat of paint and LED lighting elements. The overall look of the new ceiling is therefore perfectly consistent with that of the original ceiling.

Renoveren is soms monnikenwerk.

Bij de vloer werden zoveel mogelijk originele stenen bewaard. Alleen de beschadigde of versleten stenen werden vervangen. Na een grondige schuurbeurt is het verschil tussen originele en nieuwe stenen haast niet meer te zien.

Vanuit dezelfde intentie om zo trouw mogelijk te blijven aan de geest van het ontwerp van 1958, werden de centrale A-vormige kolommen opnieuw wijnrood geschilderd, zoals de originele inkleuring.

Na een complexe maar zeer geslaagde renovatie begint voor de Skyhall een nieuw hoofdstuk. Niet langer als een transithal voor vliegtuigpassagiers, maar als een originele ruimte voor allerhande evenementen. Dankzij haar centrale ligging in het hart van Europa, is de Skyhall vlot bereikbaar via de lucht, de weg en het spoor. Zo heeft de Skyhall alle troeven om de toekomst ambitieus tegemoet te zien.

La rénovation s’apparente parfois à un travail de fourmi. Au niveau du sol, nous nous sommes attachés autant que possible à conserver les pierres d’origine. Seules les pièces endommagées ou usées ont été remplacées. Après un ponçage minutieux, la différence entre les pierres d’origine et les neuves n’est quasiment plus visible.

Brussels Airport Company a voulu rester aussi fidèle que possible à l’esprit du design original de 1958. C’est pourquoi les colonnes centrales en A ont été repeintes en bordeaux, la couleur d’origine.

Au terme d’une rénovation complexe, mais très réussie, le Skyhall est prêt à écrire un nouveau chapitre de l’histoire de notre aéroport. L’espace n’est plus pensé comme hall de transit pour les passagers, mais comme un espace original pour toutes sortes d’événements. Grâce à sa situation centrale au cœur de l’Europe, le Skyhall est facilement accessible par voie aérienne, routière et ferroviaire. Le Skyhall dispose ainsi de tous les atouts pour aborder l’avenir avec ambition.

Renovation is painstaking at times. For the floor, as many stones as possible were preserved. Only the damaged or worn stones were replaced. A thorough sanding has ensured that there is hardly a detectable difference between the original stones and the new ones.

Brussels Airport Company wanted to remain as faithful as possible to the spirit of the original design of 1958 and so the central A-shaped columns were once again painted burgundy red, as they were originally.

After a complex but highly successful renovation, the Skyhall is now embarking on a new chapter. No longer as a transit hall for passengers, but as an original space for all kinds of events. Thanks to its central location at the heart of Europe, the Skyhall can be easily reached by air, road and rail. The Skyhall has everything to secure a truly ambitious future.
