From Germany to Cleveland

C

ertainly one of my favorite aspects of being in the media business is living in a world where the action never stops. In one sense, it seems like a long time between issues with the eight-week cycle. But it always goes by in a blink.

Even at that pace, we continue to drive forward with background projects for Brushware and I’m always glad to see another step forward.

We were pleased to kick off 2020 with the official launch of the German-language Brushware digital edition for the January/February issue. In preparation for a big Interbrush year and based on the sheer number of brush manufacturers and industry-related companies in Germany, the time was right to launch a German edition, and we will expand on that concept with having print copies of the German edition available at Interbrush and select European shows going forward.

The brush, broom, mop and paint products industry is a global force and as we move to be a better industry resource across the world, there is no question that we wanted to firmly plant the Brushware flag in Germany with its well-known legacy in the brush industry and huge presence of brush-related companies. The credit for the initiative goes to Katharina Goldbeck-Hörz and her team for the editing and Julie Jantzer-Ward for the layout. They both jumped into the project with a lot of enthusiasm and delivered a great product.

Keeping the global perspective in mind, but coming back across the Atlantic, I am pleased to report that I had the chance to visit another traditional brush mecca in January as I made it to the 57th Annual Mill-Rose Manufacturers and Suppliers Luncheon held in Cleveland, Ohio. As a newcomer, I wasn’t quite sure why Cleveland in January was such a popular destination for the industry. I thought it was all about a Friday luncheon, but I got a quick lesson on the legacy of Cleveland as the center for a vast number of brushmakers that pre-date the modern era of distribution. In truth, the luncheon is a punctuation point on a full week, where suppliers travel around meeting with existing and potential clients on site in the region. As a little sidenote, I caught a break this year as the weather was unseasonably warm and I found downtown Cleveland to be an entertaining area. I look forward to returning in 2021.

Speaking of warm weather and making key supplier-manufacturer connections … get ready for the 103rd ABMA Convention set for St. Petersburg, Fla., in early March. Bob Lawrence sets the scene for this year’s event with a wonderful preview that covers all the convention opportunities as well as some fun offsite destinations. 57 Annual Mill-Rose Luncheon Features NFL Hall-of-Famer th

On Friday, January 24, 2020, brush manufacturers from around the world gathered for the 57th Annual Mill-Rose Brush Manufacturers and Suppliers Luncheon, held at Pickwick and Frolic restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio. At the luncheon’s opening, Mill-Rose President Greg Miller welcomed representatives from around the world. “Networking plays an important role in our business and there is no better way of communicating with contributors to our industry, whether manufacturers or suppliers, than at this annual meeting,” says Greg Miller. Miller continued with a brief explanation of the history behind the annual luncheon event and the importance of relationships within the brush manufacturing industry.

For more than a half-century, brush manufacturers and their suppliers have attended this networking luncheon, hosted by The Mill-Rose Company. This year’s event featured guest speaker Dave Robinson, former Green Bay Packers linebacker, NFL Hall-of-Famer and recipient of two Super Bowl rings. Robinson provided the group with interesting stories about his path to the NFL and his time with the Packers and legendary coach Vince Lombardi, while relating how those experiences tie in to everyday business decisions.

Leading up to the event, manufacturers and suppliers gathered during the week to discuss business trends, opportunities and other topics related to the brush industry.

Brushes manufactured by representative companies are used in virtually every type of industry around the world. Applications include makeup/mascara brushes, hair brushes, floor sweeping and polishing brushes, gun cleaning brushes, car wash brushes, copier toner brushes, brooms, paint brushes and special brushes used in the medical field. Local and regional brush manufacturing companies attending the event included Precision Brush, Malish Brush, Phillips Brush, Spiral Brush, Brushes Corp., Michigan Brush and The MillRose Company.

ABMA Foundation Provides Grant For Chiappelli The ABMA Foundation has announced a $5,000 General Endowment award to Andrea Chiappelli to aid with his medical treatments and care. ABMA Foundation President D. Scott Enchelmaier says, “We are pleased to have a foundation that can serve to help industry people in need. Andrea Chiappelli has worked in at least five ABMA member companies over the past couple of decades and has a longstanding relationship within the industry. We are most happy and honored to be in a position to help Andrea and his family.”

UNIMAC Strengthens Engineering Office UNIMAC s.r.l. is pleased to announce the hiring of two new professionals who have joined UNIMAC’s mechanical design department.

Andrea has an aggressive form of lymphoma that we’ve been battling for one year now.

We’re running out of options here in the US. Even though we were able to beat the aggressive cancer in his throat with radiation treatment, the colon cancer is now spreading.

We are trying to get Andrea into a clinic in Milan or other options abroad where they have more expertise with his kind of cancer and prognosis. The Milan option would allow Andrea to be close to his family during an extremely difficult time. For this reason, this is our first choice.

Todtnau’s 250-Year Black Forest Legacy In the Black Forest of Germany 250 years ago, Todtnau was the cradle of brushes and brooms, which were made with beech wood and pig bristles. Brushes were already known in antiquity as findings in Egypt and Greece proved that brushes were used for cleaning, clothes and hair care. North of the Alps, discoveries from Roman military camps also show that brushes were used to care for soldiers and horses. Already around the year 1400, brush making was known to exist in Germany in Nuremberg.

How did this industry come to the deep Black Forest and Todtnau?

In the second half of the 18th century, Josef Thoma in Todtnau ran a grain mill that worked with water power. While the carrying, emptying and filling of the sacks were handled by the stronger sons, the smallest of the boys, Leodegar, was responsible for the cleanliness of the mill, the clothes and the shoes. He found this activity particularly difficult, since there were no brushes or brooms. He pondered the concept of making an appropriate tool that could ease his work. Finally, he came up with the idea to use the bristles of the pigs. But somehow these had to be held together to be effective. To solve that issue, he sawed a piece of wood into an oblong shape, drilled holes in it and filled them with bundles of bristles, which he attached with wooden wedges. This represented the first Todtnauer brush in 1770.

With the known pre-history from Egypt and Greece, Leodegar Thoma would not be viewed as the inventor of the brush. However, in the course of manufacturing process, material procurement and sales, he implemented the division of labor in this industry and was thus superior to other imitators.

From the earliest beginnings, a trade and prosperous industry developed that still competes with its products on the world market after 250 years. The inauguration of a brush museum in Todtnau, in the year of Interbrush 2020, is to be acknowledged at the beginning of the event.

India Brush Expo: April 2021 The India Brush Expo 2021 (IBE 2021) is set to be India’s first B2B exhibition for brush-making machinery and finished brushes and will be held April 14-16, 2021, at the CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre, Mumbai, India.

The brush industry in India is booming and the dental care, beauty and grooming, decorative paints (including brushes and rollers), industrial brush and cleaning brush sectors are all growing at an average of above 10 percent per year. Key factors for the growth trend include increased exposure to global trends, high disposable incomes, more women in the workforce and rising health, hygiene and grooming awareness. In addition, outreach to semi-urban and rural areas along with abundant investments in all industrial and commercial sectors also support the trend.

Hillbrush Invests in Injection Moulding Machine Hillbrush has made significant investment in a new state-of-the-art 1000 tonne press injection moulding machine at its manufacturing site in Wiltshire, England. The injection moulding machine, which has a pick and place robot mounted to it, is capable of producing Hillbrush parts efficiently and will significantly increase Hillbrush’s in-house manufacturing capabilities and output. Previously outsourced, the new large-scale machine will now enable Hillbrush to manufacture larger products such as snow shovels, warning A frame signs, multi-impression dust pans and buckets.

As well as brushware and its own large parts, Hillbrush, the UK’s largest manufacturer of brushes and specialist hygienic cleaning tools, will now also be able to manufacture medium to large parts for other companies who require plastic products that are injection moulded.

New Sales and Marketing Specialist at Nexstep Cayleigh Gibbons joined Nexstep Commercial Products on December 2, 2019, as Sales and Marketing Specialist. Gibbons now works in the corporate office in Springfield, Ohio. Gibbons recently graduated from Edinboro University in Edinboro, Penn., with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Business Administration with a Concentration in Marketing.

Gibbons was a member of the university’s women’s soccer team and a member of the marketing club.

Gibbons was born and raised in Fairview Park, Ohio. She recently moved to Dayton, Ohio, with her fiancé Dylan, who is an Airman stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. She is looking forward to using her education to help expand Nexstep’s marketing presence. Cableware Division, located in Naples, Fla., has announced the purchase of Sheaves, Inc., a leading manufacturer and distributor of pulleys and sheaves to the wire and wire rope industry The acquisition of Sheaves, Inc. took place at the end of December and unifies three brands known in the wire and wire rope industry under the Loos & Co., Inc. product umbrella. All products from QSheaves, long known for quick delivery on customizable lifting sheaves, process sheaves, industry source for pulleys used in wire and cable manufacturing, and ESheaves, the source for both stock and custom metal/plastic sheaves, are now available through the Loos & Co., Inc. Cableware Division.

ZAHORANSKY Completes India Plant Expansion After a year of construction, ZAHORANSKY has completed the expansion of the plant in Coimbatore, India, and is now on course for the sustainable expansion in developing state-of-the-art solutions for toothbrush production in price-sensitive markets. By doubling the production capacities and adding office and meeting spaces, ZAHORANSKY can now leverage the Coimbatore location to meet the increasing demand from customers from India, Asia and Latin America for molds and machines to manufacture toothbrushes.

“With the completion of the new construction project, we are starting a new chapter for ZAHORANSKY Coimbatore. We will ensure clear optimizations in our future production and logistics processes, and with that shorter delivery times, with an additional 3,200 square meters.

Moreover, this opens up additional room for our models produced in India, the Z.ORCA, Z.SWORD, and Z.SHARK,” says Robert Dous, Head of Sales/Marketing of ZAHORANSKY AG. Prior to the groundbreaking for this current expansion in October 2018, the Indian subsidiary had already relocated from Mumbai to Coimbatore roughly 10 years prior. ZAHORANSKY started by using rented premises for production. However, the development of Asian business allowed for the opening of the company’s own plant in 2013.

And now, the Indian branch has developed into the second-largest location of the ZAHORANSKY Group overall, employing around 160 professionals.

020 is not only a new year for the American Brush Manufacturers Association, but also a new decade that begins with members deciding the way forward on March 4-7 at Florida’s Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club. ABMA President Scott Enchelmaier says the convention theme, “2020 Vision for the Future,” was chosen “because the association is beginning its 103rd year and it’s an appropriate time to continue to find ways to bring value to our existing membership and also evolve in ways that make our association relevant and attractive to new members.” As a member-driven association, he says the board of directors “reached out in advance to the membership with surveys and webinars to help ABMA develop and prioritize marching orders for crafting our future. Lots of brainstorming has taken place in webinars as kind of a shotgun process to get a list of ways that we can make our association better.”

ABMA Executive Director David Parr adds that the purpose of the survey was to perform an analysis of ABMA’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). “In the webinars, we gathered ideas to enhance industry knowledge, improve association networking and improve industry and member profitability in accordance with the stated goals of the ABMA,” Parr says. With that being the ground work, Enchelmaier believes it’s “essential that members attend the convention where we will be refining the process further and determining what ABMA will look like in the next 10 years. Finding ways to expand the networking and educational benefits that go on during the convention throughout the rest of the year is one of the topics suggested. Engaging younger members with relevant topics in a format that they are more comfortable with is another.”

The process in which members will participate in planning the association’s future will occur during an all-attendee ABMA Educational Institute session on Thursday, March 5, at 9:00 a.m. There will be two phases beginning with a discussion to determine the association’s needs going forward and then focus on developing action plans. The session will be facilitated by Steve Fredlund who holds an MBA and is certified in strategic workforce planning. He’s spent the past few months working on the planning process with Parr who calls Fredlund “a skilled and adept facilitator. Steve will keep us on task and aligned with our objective for each step along the way. He has proven himself during the webinar portion of the process and I have every confidence that at the convention we will get to the finish line with a series of actionable items for the board to consider and prioritize.”

Fredlund says that during the session the findings from the webinars and the SWOT analysis will be shared with the members who will then “discuss a list of potential ABMA focus areas that have been built throughout this strategic planning process. Each attendee will also have an opportunity to choose those areas they would like to see prioritized. This will help inform the priorities and goals of the AMBA for the next few years.” Asked if he would characterize the undertaking as a reboot or relaunch of the association, Parr says it’s “more like a course correction or course maintenance task because the board believes the time is ripe for an assessment to make sure we are reflecting the needs and wishes of the membership. We are in a great position to take on this task, as we are financially healthy, stable, and in a position to look toward the future, especially in this climate of generational change.”

It’s been 20 years since the association held a strategic planning session, according to Parr. “It occurred when there was a real climate for significant organizational change, and it fostered a lot of ideas and recommendations. I expect the 2020 version to be more like fine tuning, at least from the feedback we have received so far.”

OTHER CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS Following a round of committee meetings on Wednesday, March 4, the convention formally kicks off with the All Divisions Meeting— Broom & Mop, Industrial & Maintenance, Paint Applicator and Suppliers. A half hour later, the ABMA All-Attendee Educational Institute will welcome Lisa Ryan who will speak on the topic “How to Attract and Keep Your Top Talent from Becoming Theirs.” Ryan, an expert in the field of employee engagement and retention, is a bestselling author of such books as “To Have and To Hold: 101 Smart Ways to Engage Employees.” She’ll be talking about how employers can “keep their top talent from becoming someone else’s by properly recognizing performance and commitment.” Ryan will ask, “Do your employees feel valued, accepted and respected?” If not, she’ll offer some tips to make it happen with simple, straightforward engagement tools. She says that in a “full-employment market, companies no longer have the luxury of employee turnover. Organizations spend a lot of time, money and effort to hire the right people to come on board; now they have to figure out how to keep them.”

Wednesday evening festivities include the New Members and FirstTime Attendees Welcome Reception at 6:00 p.m., followed an hour later by the Paul M. Miller Welcome Reception named in honor of the late president of The Mill-Rose Company and a well-known industry leader.

Tee time is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, for ABMA’s annual Golf Scramble Tournament at the 18-hole, par-71 Vinoy Golf Club, and that evening beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Mid Convention Reception will be held. An hour later, ABMA will host its firstever Networking Dinner at the Beach Seafood and Taphouse located about a block from the Vinoy. Enchelmaier says the board decided to hold the networking dinner “because Thursday night traditionally has been when suppliers have the opportunity to invite their customers and guests to dinner. However, not all convention attendees receive an invitation, and we thought it important to have a convention sponsored dinner that allows them to continue to network with others.” While participation is limited to 36 at $125 per person, if it goes well, Parr says, “we can expand the capacity for future years.” He adds that any profit from the dinner will be donated to the ABMA Foundation, “so we hope this new event gains traction and is well received.”

FACE 2 FACE AGAIN On Friday, March 6, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., there will be a Continental Breakfast followed by the four-hour annual Suppliers Display. As was the case at last year’s convention in the Bahamas, the format will again be pre-scheduled 13-minute meetings between individual suppliers and manufacturers. It’s designed to “simplify the process and reduce expenses incurred by suppliers in shipping their traditional displays to the event,” says Enchelmaier. He says last year’s feedback in the convention evaluations from both suppliers and manufacturers was “overwhelmingly positive” regarding the new format. “Typical comments supported the notion that the face-to-face format improved the quality of discussions,” Enchelmaier says, adding that “rather than wandering around the room looking for an opening to meet with their suppliers, manufacturers are given the opportunity to pre-arrange private meetings. Having a time limit also forces people to stay focused.” The meetings must be scheduled in advance using scheduling software available at ABMA.org.

Each supplier is allowed to have only the following on their tables: tablecloth, literature, price sheets, tabletop racks, counter cards, sample products and a laptop to stream video. As to whether this format will return at the 2021 convention, Enchelmaier says a decision has not yet been made. A determining factor will likely be based on member evaluations at the convention’s closure, he says, because the board of directors, “relies heavily on membership feedback. Also, we don’t want to let things get stale by doing things the same way over and over.”

A noon buffet lunch follows the Suppliers Display and then gives way to an afternoon of attendees doing as they please.

The annual Suppliers Reception is always a convention highlight and begins at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening with the usual excellent food, music, dancing, fun, and as usual, a few surprises during the event.

On Saturday, March 7, there will be no closing business session, allowing attendees to have networking activities on their own and to enjoy the resort’s many amenities as well as St. Pete, or depart as they please.

Although normal overall convention attendance averages around 300, Parr says, “Historically we see a 10-15 percent reduction in attendance in an Interbrush year, primarily because of a dramatic reduction in European attendance, as many of our supplier friends in Europe stay home to get ready for Interbrush. We know this in advance and plan accordingly.”

In a final comment, Enchelmaier urges members to fill out the convention evaluation forms. “They are critical in assessing how members feel about convention activities.”

RETURNING TO THE VINOY RENAISSANCE The ABMA convention is back this year at the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club, one of the members’ most popular venues. Overlooking Tampa Bay, the luxurious salmon-colored Mediterranean Revival building with 361 guestrooms opened in 1925.

Although you’d never know it given the elegance and amenities available there today, the resort was in relative disrepair in the late 1970s, according to St. Pete historians.

Then came a $93-million restoration and a 1992 expansion that added a guest tower, an 18-hole golf course, a private 74-slip marina, a 12-court tennis complex, five restaurants, a full-service day spa and salon and a 5,000-square-foot fitness center. ABMA Executive Director David Parr says the Vinoy has been “at or near the top of our highest-rated convention venues each time we go. It’s kind of like sitting in a comfortable chair. The place works very well for our group and they do a great job. And for 2020, you will see a very much re-energized neighborhood shopping, nightlife and restaurant scene, all within walking distance from the Vinoy.”

COMPANION PROGRAM: THE MURAL TOUR This year’s Companion Program on Friday, March 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., is a trolley ride tour of downtown St Petersburg’s incredible large scale murals painted on buildings throughout the city. Of the more than 85 murals, many were painted by local art legend Derek Donnelly who will lead the tour. He also holds the title of having co-created the largest and most stunning “Time to Think” mural on the rear of the Florida CraftArt Building. According to Cara Tomlinson of Cheers Events, this will be a “rare opportunity because not many people get to learn about St Petersburg’s flourishing arts scene from one of the city’s most celebrated artists.” The tour is free to participants and is limited to the first 30 who sign up.

TAMPA BAY SCAVENGER HUNT Friday afternoon, 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., offers the Electric Boat Scavenger Hunt, allowing team participants to cruise around Tampa Bay in search of clues that, when found, they will capture on camera. Along the way, they’ll also see local landmarks, waterfront homes and wildlife indigenous to the area. Cara Tomlinson of Cheers Events explains that at the marina, “participants will be divided into teams and board eco-friendly and easy to operate electric powered boats that cruise quietly on the bay at sailboat speed.” She says a host will provide boating instructions, details of the hunt, maps and colored bandanas. The price is $170 per person and is available to the first 30 who sign up.

Whether you’re trying to retain existing customers or grab the attention of new ones, your online reputation speaks volumes for your company in today’s digital business landscape. Just like your website is your online storefront, the way you handle feedback from existing customers is a great way for any potential customer to find out more about your company. Reviews and feedback (whether written or in video format) are some of the most powerful ways that customers can find out more about your business.

The main concept behind brands has changed with time, just like the way we market. Previously, brands were considered concepts that you had a relationship with.

However, in the digital age brands are now considered to be the relationship. When you define your brand in this way, by personalizing your customer experience, you can expect better engagement, stronger loyalty and brand differentiation. If every photo you post on Instagram, every advertisement you have on Google AdWords, every video you post to YouTube speaks to your customer clearly, then your brand identity will start to resonate from these pieces of content with clarity. When you have branded yourself correctly, each piece of content or media you put out into the digital world should be easily recognizable and direct your customer’s attention to your unique voice and image.”

When your brand has a strong voice and story, it is easier to create relationships with your customers. Even better, it helps you maintain a good relationship with your customers.

Nurture Your Online Presence When you nurture your online presence, you have the ability to be in control of your online reputation behind the scenes. You control who sees what on your website, you control what gets published online from your social channels, you manage press releases and you are responsible for sending out any brand information. Here are two ways to make sure you are nurturing your online presence:

Do A Brand Audit: To make sure you’ve got your bases covered, you’ll want to make sure your brand is consistent everywhere. This means checking anywhere your logo, your brand and your trademark is represented online (for instance at trade shows, partner websites, social media, press releases, etc.). Does it match your website and the rest of the branding you use (color schemes, language, font, etc.)? Unsure? Then try performing a bi-annual audit on your company to see where your brand is being represented and how. Do you need to tweak any language on your website to reflect new business goals? Do you need to resend your logo to that trade show website? When someone goes to a partner website, finds your logo or business information, does it redirect them to the appropriate website? All of these factors add up to make a positive customer experience and reflect back on a solid online reputation.

Regularly Post Content: Another way to nurture your online presence is to make sure you’re posting quality and relevant content regularly to your social media channels. Francesco Carullo, of Boucherie Borghi Group, says the content that works the best for his company is “visually attractive content like videos and photos. We try to combine data with images or videos to explain and show what our products and technology can do for our customers.”

If you are active on your social media, you get a first-hand view of what your customer experiences when they’re engaging with you online. This is another way to personify your brand and make sure that you remain accessible to your customers. By posting regularly and engaging with other brands and customers, you’re going to help your search engine optimization by increasing your content. Increasing your content production increases the chances that your brand will be consistently represented across the internet. When you actively engage your brand online, you’re opening the doors to enriching your customers’ experience.

Nurture Your Customers Nurturing your customers is a way to maintain a relationship with those who seek you out online. You can do this two ways: posting great content specifically for your customers and addressing reviews (both positive and negative).

Posting Content for Your Customers: There is no better way for you to manage your brand so thoroughly and consistently then publishing quality content that resonates with your customers. From the “Branding in the Digital Age” article, “Creating content that represents your brand is great. Creating content that speaks to your consumer is even better. But creating content that is personalized and unique to your consumer is where marketing is going beyond 2018. Storytelling is a great way to reach your audience on a human-to-human level. You’re not selling products to robots, after all. What you are selling is the human experience, which can be something as simple as the ease of use your products provide or your solution to their very specific problem …”

When creating content, Gordon Brush’s VP of Marketing, Alan Schechter, says the company tries “to have solid content depending on what the product line is about so we can dovetail the content to the user.” Personalizing your content to the consumer cuts through the noise of everything being published online. It’s like holding up a neon arrow that points to your business when everyone else has cardboard cutouts. Content is made to nurture your customer’s buying process

and experience. They want to know that you’re speaking to them directly, addressing their specific needs and goals. As Schechter says, “customer engagement depends on the content that you produce.”

Namely, if you want to have customers who engage with you online, interact with your brand and reach out when they have either a positive or even a negative experience, make sure you’re producing content for them.

Responding to Feedback: Another way to nurture your customers is to address any feedback you receive online. Responding to feedback applies to both negative and positive experiences alike, but let’s focus on the negative, for now. Jay Baer’s aptly named book, “Hug Your Haters,” writes that “in today’s world, meaningful differences between businesses are rarely rooted in price or product, but instead in customer experience.”

He writes that hugging your haters turns the customer experience around so much that you can have customers for life depending on how you handle your negative feedback. “Satisfaction among people who complain about business hasn’t improved at all since the 1970s.

Haters are not your problem – ignoring them is. Not responding is a response. A response that says ‘I don’t care about you.’ Answering complaints increases customer advocacy. Not answering complaints decreases customer advocacy.” Maintaining this relationship with your customers is one of the best ways to make sure your online brand remains in good standing with current and potential customers.

reviews: respond to them promptly with calmness and truth, offer a public apology (not canned or fake but empathetic to the customer experience) and take the conversation offline.

When you address a negative review from a customer, you’re opening the door to them becoming a satisfied repeat business investment.

PMI Index: Numbers Trend Up in January Reports European Manufacturing PMI Back on Upward Trend The January ISM Report on business showed a strong bump in the US PMI based on reporting from supply chain executives. The January number jumped 3.1 percentage points from December to register 50.9 percent, which is the first time since July 2019 that the index climbed past the 50-percent level.

ISM Chair Timothy R. Fiore’s comments on the report noted a 4.4 percent increase for the new orders index and said that comments from the panel of executives were positive, with sentiment improving compared to December.

“Global trade remains a cross-industry issue, but many respondents were positive for the first time in several months,” says Fiore.

“Among the six big industry sectors, Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products remains the strongest, followed closely by Computer and Electronic Products. Petroleum and Coal Products is the weakest.

Overall, sentiment this month is moderately positive regarding nearterm growth.”

ISM Chair Timothy R. Fiore’s comments on the report noted that demand expanded, with the New Orders Index growing at a moderate rate supported by new export order expansion. The Customers’ Inventories Index is still at ‘too low’ status, while the Backlog of Orders Index contracted for the ninth month, but at a slower rate. Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment Indexes) expanded to respond to new order intake, contributing positively to the January PMI calculation with a combined 10.9-percentage point increase.

CONTRACTION SECTORS (8): Printing and Related Support Activities; Apparel, Leather and Allied Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components; Petroleum and Coal Products; Textile Mills; Transportation Equipment; Primary Metals; and Machinery.

EUROPE: After a dip in December, the IHS Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI followed improving numbers for October and November and registered 47.9 percent in January. The chart shows September 2019 as a clear three-year low and the January number supports an upward trend. It was the 12th straight month of contraction, but the supporting figures show that it was the slowest rate of contraction in nine months. Confidence about future business prospects jumped to its highest level in 16 months (August 2018).

ISM REPORT COMMENTS “Business has picked up considerably. Many of our suppliers are working at or above full capacity. Tariffs are still a concern and are believed to be a factor in short supply and higher prices of electronic parts. Our profit margin has been somewhat negatively affected by high tariffs, particularly on electronic parts from China.”

(Computer and Electronic Products) “Small signs of increased global demand in the chemical segment.” (Chemical Products) “Continued signs of slowdown in manufacturing.”

(Transportation Equipment) “Demand for prepared frozen food continues to be strong, but margins compressing as inputs rise with price elasticity preventing accompanying increases.”

(Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products) “Our customer slowdown has not reached the bottom.”

(Petroleum and Coal Products) “Our business is starting 2020 stronger than we finished 2019, as we saw a dramatic downturn in orders over the last four months of 2019. Orders are up to start the year, but slightly behind where they were one year ago.”

(Fabricated Metal Products) “Business is good — above last year, though a little below plan.” (Furniture and Related Products) “The annual holiday slowdown was slightly more significant compared to the previous three years, heightening concerns over the 2020 first-quarter forecast.”

(Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components) “The lack of faith in the economy seems to be why we cannot sell capital projects.” (Machinery) “Tariffs on injection molds will impact selection of mold builder for future jobs. We are more likely to choose domestic rather than offshore.”
