The Countdown Begins As we embark on 2024 and begin the countdown to the much-anticipated World Brush Expo in May, I am excited to present the January-February issue of Brushware which is packed with an array of content spanning key topics for the brush industry.
Brushware – a bi-monthly publication edited for key personnel in the brush, roller, broom, mop and applicator industry. Published continuously through the years, the one publication that is the spokesman for the brush and allied industries: 1898-1923, called Brooms, Brushes & Handles; 1924-1947, called Brooms, Brushes & Mops, 1948-today, called Brushware.
Now in its fifth year, I am pleased to present our Digital 40 Brushware Power List and top articles from 2023 which you can find up front in our Industry News section. Each year as we comb through the stats, we see a story behind the data. Not surprisingly, our most viewed stories cover recruiting, an active acquisition year and brush product innovations.
PUBLICATION OFFICE Brushware Magazine Goodwin World Media LLC P.O. Box 7093 Overland Park, KS 66207 Tel: 913-636-7231

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS CELANESE FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 80 years, Celanese Filaments, formerly owned by Dupont, has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.
HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, Celanese Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of Celanese Tynex®(nylon 612) and Celanese Herox®(nylon 610). Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using Celanese filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, Celanese Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS Celanese Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from Celanese’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking forsquare feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster
than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extreme PH. The technical resources at Celanese Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range where these filaments can be used. Brushes made with our filaments deliver cleaning performance for a longer life, helping over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. Celanese Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as Celanese Tynex®, Celanese Chinex® and Celanese Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, Celanese Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer crosssection that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.
YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS
Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. 1-800-635-9695 | www.celanese.com

ZAHORANSKY’S Z.PARD MT for Fully Automated Brush Production Four-station twin machine ensures greater output and process reliability in the production of household and hygiene brushes High output combined with reliability and flexibility – the Z.PARD from ZAHORANSKY has proven itself for many years as a high-performance machine for the economical production of household and hygiene brushes. With the Z.PARD MT, ZAHORANSKY now offers the industry a further development for fully automated brush production. Compared to the manually operated model, the four-station machine includes an in-and-out feed handling as well as the trimming unit in addition to the drilling and tufting unit. This means that the operator only must place the brush bodies on the infeed belt for storage.
The Z.PARD MT takes care of all further steps, from removal and transfer to the drilling unit by an industrial robot to dispensing the finished “ready-for-sale” brushes into a storage container. A consistently high output thanks to maximum production speed, optimum capacity planning and a small footprint are just as much in favor of the MT variant as the reduction in the workload of the machine operators. In the particularly price-sensitive mass market for household and hygiene brushes, customers benefit from even lower unit costs with higher product quality and process reliability thanks to the high degree of automation of the Z.PARD MT. With the Z.PARD MT, ZAHORANSKY is further expanding its range of fully automated machines for brush production. This gives manufacturers of household and hygiene brushes even more flexibility to choose a solution that is precisely tailored to the individual requirements of their company. Like the manually operated Z.PARD model, the MT version is characterized by high performance, reliability and precision. The high degree of automation also increases efficiency and process reliability and enables the Z.PARD MT to produce at full speed. The “no-human-touch” operation also leads to even higher product quality due to the elimination of sources of error and at the same time increases work safety and comfort as all quality-relevant production steps run without interaction by an employee.
Increased automation to counter the shortage of skilled workers Another advantage: in times of a global shortage of skilled workers, operation is possible with less staff. After selecting the desired model on the touchscreen, the operator simply has to place the brush bodies on the infeed belt for storage instead of inserting them into the carousel’s clamping system as with the manually operated version. In the Z.PARD MT, an integrated industrial robot removes the brush body from the belt and inserts it into the clamping unit of the twin carousel. In the next step, the holes are drilled at a speed of up to 25,000 rpm. In the next step, the brush handles get tufted at a speed of up to 2x 600 tufts per minute, trimmed directly
14 | www.brushwaremag.com
in the machine and dispensed into a storage container as a ‘ready-for-sale’ product. This means that only one machine operator is required to operate and monitor the Z.PARD MT. While the machine is working, the operator can also carry out other tasks such as labeling, packaging, etc. To further relieve employees, the Z.PARD MT can also be supplemented with an automatic filament feeding system and a labeling device. Last but not least, the Z.PARD MT scores points for its smaller footprint, as no additional trimming machine is required.
Simple and quick adjustments The Z.PARD MT is ideal for the production of household products such as brooms, hand brushes, scrubbing brushes as well as dishwashing, toilet, bath and wire brushes. Accordingly, both wooden and plastic handles with a brush length of up to 400 mm (optionally up to 600 mm) can be processed. The machine is also flexible when it comes to filament types: in addition to natural fibers and natural hair, plastic and wire filaments can also be processed. Depending on the brush model, the machine is available for processing filament lengths of up to 260 mm or 320 mm (unfolded).
parts such as the quick-change plate or the tufting tool are compatible with other household machines, thus saving the investment budget. The desired models are programmed and visualized directly on the machine using the smart ZMI 4.0 machine control system. The models can be visualized at any time to get a direct impression of the final product.
Focus on ergonomics and work safety Like all ZAHORANSKY machines, the Z.PARD MT is particularly user-friendly thanks to its ergonomic design and also increases work safety. Recesses at the bottom of the machine for optimum accessibility and easy-to-open doors contribute to this, as does an additional emergency stop switch directly on the machine. Furthermore, an LED bar with traffic light function visualizes the operating status. Learn more about ZAHORANSKY’s Z.PARD MT at www.zahoransky.com/en/z-pard.
The Z.PARD MT is also impressive when it comes to converting to other brush models: The quick-change system enables sample-specific components, such as carriages or tufting tools, to be replaced in a very short time. In addition,

supply CHAIN
Integrate AI in Manufacturing to Raise the Bar By Lisa Anderson According to Polaris Market Research, the market size of artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing is predicted to grow more than 41 percent during the next decade. Although the latest Sikich Industry Pulse found that less than 20 percent of manufacturers have started to implement AI, those wanting to thrive in the next decade are pursuing AI strategies that make sense to support their business objectives. AI can help manufacturers target where to focus and automate mundane tasks. There are many uses for AI in manufacturing. A classic example is predictive maintenance. Instead of preventative maintenance, target where to maintain with predictive maintenance to maximize your efforts. Collaborative robots (cobots) work alongside people and often can perform tasks that require heavy lifting. Digital twins are virtual models of physical objects or layouts, and they can receive information about the object through sensors to get information about maintenance needs, etc. On the software side, manufacturers are using robotic process automation (RPA) to handle high-volume, repetitive tasks that can be automated. For example, in working with a water tank manufacturer, we wanted to upgrade the use of ERP and start using MRP (material requirements planning) recommendations for purchasing. Before turning MRP on, we had to perform a cleanup of data and add routing data steps in the system. The team was lean, and it was estimated to take a few months to prepare for go-live. The executive team did not want to wait to improve service and increase efficiencies, so a technical expert on the team used RPA to write a code to automate the setups. We completed the preparation in three days instead of three months and started gaining results. Another application for AI in manufacturing is a lights-out factory that runs with robots. Although full lights-out factories are rare, this application is gaining momentum across the globe especially as workforce participation rates remain low. Manufacturers realize they need to gain control of their success and are reshoring and margins remain tight with high material

and labor costs. Robots can operate around the clock without lunches, breaks and workers compensation claims. In one example, an industrial manufacturing client struggled to find the talent needed to run its manufacturing operations. They couldn’t keep up with demand, employees were frustrated and customers were unhappy. They purchased a robot to perform production in a key bottleneck area of the facility; however, the robot couldn’t produce around the clock because there was nowhere to store the finished product on the second and third shifts without material handlers. Thus, the engineering team developed an automated way for the product to be moved from the point of production. Past-due deliveries plummeted as the system came online. AI is also prevalent in supply chain applications that support manufacturing success. Sales forecasting and demand planning can now be supported with AI algorithms to better predict demand. Even in the most industrial of manufacturers, demand patterns have been difficult to predict, creating a need for AI to get in front of demand. AI is also used in inventory management to prevent bottlenecks and predict what’s needed. AI requires proactive design so that you can limit the expenses and minimize the high-skilled resources required to go live. Start with a rapid assessment of your business requirements, process and technical infrastructure and resources. Select a pilot to test your plans and results will follow. President and CEO Gonzalo Martinez Offers Insights on the Schaefer Brush Approach By Bob Lawrence
Talk about a legacy in the brush industry, this company undeniably has one for sure, including unique ownership. Founded in 1904 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Schaefer Brush was a family-owned and operated business until nine years ago when it was purchased by Milwaukee-based Blackthorne Partners, a private investment firm. At the time of the sale in 2015, then company President Harold Schaefer said, “Our family spent 110 years developing and nurturing Schaefer Brush Manufacturing, so when it came time to sell the business we wanted buyers who would respect that legacy and Blackthorne Partners offered us just that.” In 2019, Blackthorne also purchased E. Gornell & Sons, a now 132-year-old Chicago industrial brush manufacturer, and streamlined operations by bringing it under Schaefer’s management. “The purchase of Gornell,” President and Chief Executive Officer Gonzalo Martinez says, “has enabled Schaefer to provide customers with a more complete product line of industrial and maintenance brushes. Design capability, manufacturing technology and customer service have been improved through the synergy of bringing these two companies together.” As a result of the merger, Martinez is president and chief executive officer of both companies that then began sharing the same Waukesha-based administrative team inclusive of customer service, sales, marketing, accounting and engineering. “The team goes to Gornell in groups a few times a week or as needed to work more closely with the production team there,” he says. His leadership role with Schaefer began on December 1, 2021, after more than 20 years of experience in sales and marketing, strategic planning, operations and business development. Prior to taking over at Schaefer, he was vice president of Pferd, Inc.’s North American headquarters in Milwaukee. Asked why he took the position at Schaefer, he says, “Taking the reins as CEO and President at Schaefer and Gornell Brush was more than a career move for me — it was a deliberate choice fueled by the company’s exceptional commitment to

Interior Paintbrush Guide
Interior Painting:
Guide to Trim Brushes
When it comes to interior trim painting, the choice of paintbrush can significantly impact the final result, especially when dealing with trim. This following guide covers the types and sizes of paintbrushes for trim, when to opt for a roller instead of a brush and tips for achieving a flawless finish without brush marks. The best paintbrush for trim is one that allows for precision, control and versatility. Your main objectives are to keep your work clean, cover all edges and navigate smaller spaces effectively. As you prepare for the job, consider the following brush types for the most effective performance:
Angled Brushes:
• Allows better coverage of trim details. • Facilitates clean lines while painting.
Bent Handle:
• Essential for maintaining control in limited spaces. • Ensures thorough coverage of corners and edges.
Additional Considerations:
• Straight-cut brushes for large flat or low-relief trim. • Chisel brushes for corners and precise edges.
Understanding Brush Characteristics Before selecting a brush for your next interior trim project, it is key to consider the ideal size, shape and stiffness for best results. From brush width to bristle shapes, each detail matters. In general, the two-inch paintbrush for trim is a good first choice, striking a balance between size, precision and coverage efficiency. Its moderate width prevents common mistakes, ensures accurate navigation of details and facilitates a clean finish. Other sizes are also available, with each range offering a specific advantage: • 1 to 1.5-inch brushes for precise details as smaller handles enable better maneuverability in complicated spaces. • 2 to 2.5-inch brushes for moderate detail and somewhat wide trim. • 3-inch and larger brushes for very wide and flat trim.
Choosing the Right Bristle:
• Synthetic bristles are ideal for water-based latex or acrylic paints. • Natural fiber brushes for oil-based paints. • Nylon is recommended for indoor trim as polyester works better for outdoor trim.
26 | www.brushwaremag.com
Selecting Brush Stiffness:
• Flexible brushes for smooth painting. • Stiff brushes for accuracy and fine details. • Medium-stiff brushes for a balanced approach.
Brush or Roller: Making the Right Choice When to Choose a Brush:
• Trim has intricate detailing. • Working on a smaller-sized project. • Prioritizing a high-quality finish. • Time is not a constraint.
When to Choose a Roller:
• Predominantly flat trim or baseboard. • Large amount of trim to paint. • Seeking a quick and easy painting process. • Refreshing trim without major detailing.
Using Both:
• Apply the main coat with a roller for speed. • Switch to a brush to cover missed spots and achieve precision.
How to Avoid Brush Marks Achieving a flawless finish involves more than just choosing the right brush. Follow these tips to paint trim without brush marks: • CLEAN YOUR TRIM: Remove dust and debris for better paint adhesion. • USE LONG, CONTINUOUS STROKES: Minimize interruptions to keep the paint smooth. • USE SMALLER AMOUNTS OF PAINT: Dip bristles no more than halfway for a manageable level of paint to prevent mess. • SAND YOUR TRIM: A smooth surface is better for paint adhesion. • USE A PRIMER FIRST: Enhances paint adhesion and provides a smoother finish.

Manufacturing Technology
Will AI Revolutionize
Manufacturing? By John Davis CTO, Global Shop Solutions
Few technologies have changed the manufacturing industry as much as ERP software. From automated scheduling to precision inventory management, automated purchasing, real-time job costing and more, ERP simplifies production processes so manufacturers can work faster and more efficiently while delivering a quality product on time every time. The next transformative technology is artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) and both are already having a significant impact on our industry by changing the way manufacturers collect, process and analyze data.
AI Primer: Computer Self-Learning at Your Service
Over the past decade, one of the biggest advances in ERP has been the ability to communicate and integrate with machines and external software programs to lower costs and increase efficiency. For example, BOM Compare software can reduce engineering costs and get jobs into production much faster by expediting the design-to-production process. Integrating ERP with Nesting software can significantly lower material and labor costs and reduce scrap by automatically determining the most efficient way to cut parts on a piece of metal.
This doesn’t mean AI can accomplish tasks without human guidance. AI needs people to set up the system to recognize patterns and ask the right questions. When programmed correctly, AI can:
AI takes these capabilities to new levels with unprecedented predictive data tracking and analysis. AI can be programmed to learn from the data ERP software gathers to make deeper and more accurate predictions regarding customers, buying habits, inventory levels, markets, material purchasing and more.
28 | www.brushwaremag.com
The magic of AI is that it gives machines the ability to learn from experience so they can adapt to new inputs and perform tasks that have always been performed by humans. This requires computers to engage in deep learning and natural language processing so they can understand, interpret and manipulate human language. When computers integrate with these technologies, they can be trained to accomplish specific tasks by processing and recognizing patterns in vast amounts of data.
• Automate repetitive learning • Add intelligence to existing products • Achieve incredible accuracy through deep neural networks • Adapt itself through progressive learning algorithms so the data can do the programming ERP gives manufacturers an advantage by tracking data in every aspect of the business. AI takes one giant step further by analyzing more data at a deeper level. When AI algorithms become self-learning, the data becomes an extremely valuable asset.

10 Ways AI Can Make Your Manufacturing Better The goal of integrating AI and ERP is essentially the same as ERP when it was first developed — simplify manufacturing to improve operational efficiency and increase profitability while growing the company. The difference is that with AI manufacturers can track and analyze predictive data as well as current and historical. With its self-learning capabilities, AI can also assist manufacturers in their decision-making when the relevant data, parameters and variables exceed human understanding.
1. Inventory Management AI-integrated ERP software helps manufacturers optimize inventory management by predicting demand, identifying slow-moving products and automating order fulfillment. According to a study by McKinsey, companies that utilize AI to optimize inventory can reduce inventory levels by up to 50 percent.
Managing inventory is mostly a reactive process, measuring stock levels and ordering materials based on historical usage and seasonal trends combined with estimates of expected customer orders. AI-based inventory planning makes it more proactive with: • Increased visibility of inventory KPIs • Improved product, channel and location forecasting that includes seasonality and trend data • Automatic classifying of SKUs to identify what’s needed to meet demand • Replenishing SKUs faster with predictive ordering based on anticipated changes in supply and demand
2. Quality Control AI-based inspection systems can identify defects and anomalies in manufacturing processes in real-time, thereby reducing the risk of product recalls and improving overall quality. For example, image recognition algorithms are capable of analyzing images of products on the assembly line to identify defects that may not be visible to the human eye. AI is also changing the way quality gets inspected. Machine vision is an integral part of many quality applications. With its deep learning capabilities, AI-powered quality control software can self-learn which aspects are vital and create rules that determine the features needed to define quality products.

3. Pricing Optimization
6. Predictive Maintenance Scheduling
AI-powered ERP software can optimize pricing by analyzing market trends, competitor pricing and customer behavior. With this data, manufacturers can make better-informed decisions to optimize prices for their products, resulting in higher profits and better customer satisfaction.
Proper maintenance is essential to minimizing downtime, reducing repair costs and extending the life of your machines and equipment. AI helps achieve these goals by predicting equipment failure and scheduling preventative maintenance before a breakdown occurs.
AI’s deep data dives allow you to model how customers will respond to price changes based on historical sales data. It also lets you factor customer behavior into pricing strategies, predict how different prices will impact sales and combine experience and data to increase prices without damaging sales. AI predictions aren’t 100 percent accurate, but they inform gut feelings about effective pricing strategies.
AI collects and processes data from sensors, cameras, logs and other sources. Engineers then analyze the data to make predictions and recommend maintenance actions. In addition to protecting your machines and equipment, AI can:
4. Demand Forecasting AI can be used to predict demand for products based on historical data, market trends and customer behavior, helping to optimize production schedules, reduce lead times and avoid stockouts. With AI, you can predict consumer demand for every SKU by taking into account seasonality, pricing, AI can also combine supply, promotions and sales, finance and marketing product lifecycles.
• Improve safety by minimizing human errors and accidents • Reduce quality defects • Increase efficiency and productivity • Support innovation, sustainability and environmental compliance with data-driven decision making
7. Labor Management Labor costs are often the biggest line item in the manufacturing budget. AI-powered ERP software can help reduce labor costs and increase productivity by predicting employee productivity, identifying training needs and optimizing scheduling.
projections into a holistic
AI offers the unique view of demand across your ability to engage in entire enterprise. demand forecasting across different time horizons. This includes near-term demand sensing, a forecasting method that combines AI and real-time data to create a forecast based on current supply chain conditions. Other AI-enabled forecasting includes direct-to-consumer and e-commerce.
5. Supply Chain Management As we all experienced during and after COVID, disruptions to supply chains can create serious problems. AI-powered ERP software helps optimize supply chain management by predicting supplier lead times, identifying bottlenecks and optimizing logistics routes to reduce lead times, lower costs and increase customer satisfaction. AI algorithms analyze data to predict which products will be in demand and in what quantities, reducing strains on specific links of your supply chain. AI can also provide upgrades to important supply chain elements, including: • Improving warehouse supply and demand management • Improving the health and longevity of your transportation vehicles • Making your loading processes more efficient • Helping supply chain managers reduce costs and increase revenues www.brushwaremag.com | 31
Manufacturing Technology
AI can also alleviate another costly labor problem – workplace injuries. AI can help streamline or automating risky processes that can lead to serious injuries and limit shop floor personnel’s exposure to powerful, unwieldy machinery and dangerous tasks.
8. Real-time Analytics AI-powered ERP software provides real-time analytics on key performance indicators such as production rates, inventory levels and quality metrics to help you make data-driven decisions and identify areas for improvement. While conventional data analysis methods do a good job of organizing and distributing IoT data, AI does it faster and with greater precision by identifying patterns and inconsistencies in real-time. AI algorithms process data from different sources and present it in a consistent manner, making it easier to structure the data for analysis. AI speeds up real-time analytics by preparing, analyzing and assessing data as soon as it is available.
9. Labor Shortages AI can even help with labor shortages through robotic automation, additive manufacturing and machine vision. AI applications enable robot arms to safely handle objects on the production line regardless of their orientation, speed
or placement. With these abilities, robots can be trained to perform various types of assembly line work done by humans. Assembly line work is repetitive, labor intensive and prone to error. Even with years of experience, highly skilled designers and engineers often use a “best guess” approach when creating design solutions. AI empowers the development of complex, highly optimized designs that can be accurately produced with 3D printing. AI-driven autonomous machine vision can count and track items, identify defects and properly sort products using cameras and specific lighting conditions.
10. Autonomous Manufacturing AI can be used to automate manufacturing processes, reducing the need for human intervention and increasing efficiency. AI robots tap into machine learning algorithms to automate repetitive tasks and decision-making. Robotic process automation can perform repetitive tasks like data entry and order processing, but it can also handle more complex tasks, such as spotting anomalies on the production line. AI-powered robots can work side-by-side with humans. Autonomous mobile robots can transport packages within the warehouse, while collaborative robots (cobots) assemble products alongside humans on the production line. These factory robots combine the precision and efficiency of machines with the skills and intelligence of human operators, taking product quality to new levels.
Say Hello to Big Data As with many industries, manufacturing has begun to gravitate toward Big Data. ERP made it possible for manufacturers to make data-based decisions by tracking large amounts of information. Big Data enables predictive forecasts regarding sales, pricing, material availability and other key metrics. AI makes gathering and analyzing those mountains of data provided by ERP possible. The complexity of AI algorithms can be daunting. Yet, their ability to look into the future as well as today and the past is mind-boggling and exciting.
AI applications enable robot arms to safely handle objects on the production line regardless of their orientation, speed or placement. 32 | www.brushwaremag.com

US Manufacturing Recovery Stalls in October German and UK Manufacturers Register Strong Improvement in November ISM® reported a U.S. Manufacturing PMI® of 46.7 percent in November matching the same figure in October. The stagnant readings for both months halted a three-month uptrend from July through September that seemed to show U.S. manufacturing on track to move above the 50 percent mark before year-end.
registered 45.8 percent, down one percentage point from the 46.8 percent reported in October.
According to the report issued by Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, demand remains soft and production is slightly down compared to October as U.S. companies continue to manage outputs, material inputs and labor costs. The overall economy continued in contraction for a second month after one month of weak expansion preceded by nine months of contraction and a 30-month period of expansion before that. (A Manufacturing PMI® above 48.7 percent, over a period of time, generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy.) The New Orders Index remained in contraction territory at 48.3 percent, 2.8 percentage points higher than the figure of 45.5 percent recorded in October. The Production Index reading of 48.5 percent is a 1.9-percentage point decrease compared to October’s figure of 50.4 percent. The Prices Index registered 49.9 percent, up 4.8 percentage points compared to the reading of 45.1 percent in October. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 39.3 percent, 2.9 percentage points lower than the October reading of 42.2 percent. The Employment Index
“Suppliers continue to have capacity. Sixty-five percent of manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP) contracted in November, down from 75 percent in October,” says Fiore. “More importantly, the share of sector GDP registering a composite PMI® calculation at or below 45 percent — a good barometer of overall manufacturing weakness — was 54 percent in November, compared to 35 percent in October and six percent in September. Three of the top six industries by contribution to manufacturing GDP were at or below 45 percent, same as the previous month.”

economic DASHBOARD NOVEMBER ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers) “Customers back online after the UAW strike. Consuming inventory that was built as a strike bank. Still (having) issues with hiring quality candidates for both hourly and salaried positions. Current inventory levels are too high, but the order book remains strong.” Primary Metals “Elevated financing costs have dampened demand for residential investment. Our business has been negatively impacted through reduced new orders for our products and services. We are purchasing less for production and finished goods inventories.” Wood Products “Customer orders have pushed into the first quarter of 2024, resulting in inflated end-ofyear inventory.” Miscellaneous Manufacturing “Starting to feel softening in the economy, with labor still a challenge to backfill critical roles. The 2024 forecast looks challenging, especially from a cost perspective.” Chemical Products “Nearly all microchip supply issues have been resolved, finally bringing an end to the three-year chip shortage. Material prices are remaining relatively flat. Supply chain issues continue in several areas, resulting from difficulties during the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike.” Transportation Equipment “Our executives have requested that we bring down inventory levels considerably, and it has started causing customer shortages. Both finished goods and low inventories of raw and packing materials are creating issues in fulfilling customer demand, and in some cases causing serious (production) delays.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products “The end of the major construction season and an early pullback in customer capital expenditures purchases have resulted in a lower backlog in the fourth quarter.” Machinery “Automotive sales still impacted by UAW strike. Still waiting for orders to come in, and we also need to work down inventory levels that increased during the strike period. This will most likely happen in December.” Fabricated Metal Products

GLOBAL MANUFACTURING EUROPE: For November, the HCOB Eurozone Manufacturing PMI
showed signs of resilience, climbing to 44.2 percent, the highest since May. Up 1.2 percent from October's 43.1 percent reading. Despite the progress, Austria continued to lead the bloc's manufacturing sector recession, trailed closely by Germany and France. New orders, export sales and output declined but at a slower pace than in previous months. Backlogs continued to decline and job losses hit their fastest pace since August 2020. Supply delivery times continued to shorten to extend a 10-month streak. Business optimism reached a three-month high. CHINA: After a slip in October, the Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI rose to 50.7 percent for November surpassing expectations and pushing the country’s manufacturing sector back into growth territory. Beijing's efforts to stimulate the slowing economy paid off, leading to increased output and buying. Employment losses slowed and new orders experienced the most significant growth in four months. Supply delivery was somewhat improved for a second straight month. Despite minimal cost pressures, input costs rose slightly. Strong sales curbed any upward price movement to keep output charges stable. Business optimism soared to a four-month high. GERMANY: Although the HCOB Germany Manufacturing PMI for November of 42.6 percent was the highest reading in six months, the manufacturing sector is still deep in contraction territory. But the reading did represent a fourth straight month of steady improvement, and output and new order declines were the slowest in six months. Companies saw reduced purchasing levels to match decreasing output and stock needs. Prices fell due to reduced demand and increased competition and employment levels fell at a faster pace. INDIA: The S&P Global India Manufacturing PMI climbed to 56
percent in November to rebound from October's eight-month low of 55.5 percent. The country’s manufacturing sector has now been in growth territory since June 2021. Several factors contributed to the rebound with new orders improving with the help of a 20-month growth streak for international sales. The strong performance boosted employment and delivery times remained stable. However, business optimism slipped to a seven-month low due to inflation concerns. ITALY: The HCOB Italy Manufacturing PMI fell to 44.4 percent to extend the contraction territory streak to eight months. The poor reading was impacted by weak demand which caused output and new orders to decline at the fastest rate in three months. The tough conditions meant factory layoffs increased and employment fell at the fastest rate since July 2020. The business outlook was pessimistic. UNITED KINGDOM: The S&P Global/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI rose to 47.2 percent in November to notch the highest reading since April. The new figure represented a third straight month of improvement. Still, the country’s manufacturers remain in contraction territory — a streak that dates back to July 2022. The headwinds include sluggish domestic demand, reduced foreign business and destocking efforts. The country’s firms continued to lower employment and reduce input purchases. Input costs did decrease while selling prices surged as firms looked to improve margins. Business confidence edged higher, signaling resilience amidst challenging circumstances.
